About the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower Paris

The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris and France, and the climb up to the Eiffel Tower is one of the most iconic things to do in Paris .

Designed by  Gustave Eiffe l for the World Fair held in Paris in 1889, the Eiffel Tower is a feat of 19th-century engineering: huge, spectacular, unique, and (for some) incredibly romantic.

Today, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in Paris . Stroll around the Eiffel Tower’s gardens with interesting perspectives of the Iron Lady. The Tower is climbed through its legs, by lift or stairs.

On the first floor , learn about the Eiffel Tower’s history through an interesting exhibition with screens, displays, and models. The second floor offers great views of Paris from above. It is also home to shops, a macaron bar, and dining options.

Get to the Eiffel Tower’s summit , at 276 meters, for the most spectacular views of Paris. Celebrate this magical moment at the champagne bar – Click here to buy your tickets to the Eiffel Tower

Paris Disneyland to Eiffel Tower Transportation Overview

This table is also valid if you want to travel from the Eiffel Tower to Disneyland Paris.

The Disneyland Paris Express bus can only be purchased with Disneyland Paris tickets. It leaves from different main sites in Paris (the Eiffel Tower included) early in the morning and travels back to Paris late in the evening. Therefore, this is not an option to travel from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower on a day trip from Disneyland.

How to Get to Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris

Here are all the ways, public and private, to travel from Disneyland Paris to the Eiffel Tower.

1. Disneyland Paris to the Eiffel Tower by Car

Even if you traveled to Disneyland Paris by car, we don’t recommend this option for visiting the Eiffel Tower. Paris’ traffic is crazy, plus it isn’t easy to find a parking spot near the Eiffel Tower.

If you decide to go from Disneyland to Eiffel Tower by car, it is a 43 km drive, and it takes 40 minutes or more, depending on the traffic. Check out this link with the car parks near the Eiffel Tower .

2. Private Car Transfer or Taxi from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower

Car Driver France

If you are looking for a comfortable door-to-door service for you and your family, Welcome Pickups can help. Welcome proposes comfortable transfer services with good cars and the best English-speaking drivers in Paris.

Private transportation is ideal when traveling with seniors or kids, and Welcome offers the best transportation service in Paris – Book your Eiffel Tower transfer with Welcome Pickups

A taxi from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower is another option, but less convenient in our opinion. There’s no flat rate to travel from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower; the taxi driver will use the counter. Unless you find a taxi on-site, the final price will include the approach rate.

3. Train from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower

eiffel tower tour from disneyland paris

The train from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower is the cheapest option. First, you need to take a train from Disneyland to Paris. When you reach Paris, you can travel to the Eiffel Tower by metro.

The Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower cost is 5€ (one way), the metro ride included. Count on it taking 75 minutes (one way).

Here’s how to get from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower by train, step-by-step:

A. Train from Disneyland to Paris

First things first: how to get from Disneyland Paris to Paris? The RER A is the train line that travels from Disneyland Paris to Paris and the Eiffel Tower. There are different RER lines with different colors, and they serve Paris and the surrounding suburbs. The RER A’s logo is red.

1. The name of the Disneyland Paris train station is Marne la Vallée /Chessy , and it is the terminus of the RER A line (red line). From the Disneyland parks, it is a 2-minute walk to Marne la Vallée /Chessy train station.

2. Take the RER A train and stop at Auber station (44 min ride).

B. Metro from Paris to Eiffel Tower

2. At Auber , look for the metro line 9 signs, direction Pont de Sèvres (it’s a 4-minute walk to the metro platform, called Hauvre-Caumartin ). Jump on any metro going in that direction, and stop at Iéna station (it’s only six stops from Hauvre-Caumartin).

3. Take exit #3. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower (follow the signs to the Tower).

Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower Train Cost

There are different tickets and travel passes to travel from Disneyland Paris to Paris by train.

The travel passes NaviGo and Navigo Easy are convenient only if you use them many times. They are individual passes, so you will need as many passes as people in your tribe.

If you only want to take a day trip from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower, choose the single train tickets.

The Disneyland to Eiffel Tower train cost is 10€* (adults) round trip. You can purchase the train tickets (one way or return) in the machines in the metro or RER stations, located right before the automated turnstiles.

Remember to keep the train ticket until you reach the final destination; there are frequent ticket controls on the trains or the RER corridors.

*Update 2023: as you can see in the picture above, the Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower train cost was more expensive when I first published this article. Good for you! However, other train tickets have become more expensive since then, especially the Navigo Passes 🙁

4. Guided Tour from Disneyland Paris to Paris (with Eiffel Tower)

With this fun Paris tour by Get Your Guide , you will discover Paris in a day from three unique perspectives: a panoramic coach, the Seine River , and the Eiffel Tower.

The tour (in English) takes 9 hours (transportation times included), and it consists of a Paris city tour , a guided cruise on the Seine River , and direct access to the Eiffel Tower, second floor . You will have free time to have lunch around the Louvre Museum.

A nine-hour tour with kids must sound tiring, but actually, this tour is one of the most comfortable ways to visit the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris with kids. Transportation is on luxury, air-conditioned panoramic coach, and there’s not much walking time in Paris.

This tour leaves from the New York Hotel and the Santa Fe Hotel. If you are staying in one of the Disneyland Hotels or Disney-associated hotels, you can use the free shuttle buses that leave from the train station to the hotels – Click here to book your Paris tour with the Eiffel Tower

What to Do Around the Eiffel Tower

The climb up to the Eiffel Tower will take you only a couple of hours ( book your tickets online well in advance ). Use the rest of your day trip to Paris to explore the Eiffel Tower District , visit other attractions near the Eiffel Tower , or have a good lunch in the area.

Important: Buy your Eiffel Tower Tickets in Advance

Note : to avoid queuing and sold-out tickets, I strongly recommend purchasing your tickets for the Eiffel Tower in advance!

There are quite a few different ways you can get to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris , from public transportation to driving a rental vehicle or private transfer.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but this guide will help you weigh all the options to help you choose which transportation mode you want to take on your day trip to the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is a good day trip destination if you spend a few days at Disneyland Paris

Visit the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris

Essentially, you have 4 options to visit Paris during your trip to Disneyland Paris. Booking a private transfer with welcome pickups or joining an organized day trip to Paris is the most convenient way to visit the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland. If you are traveling on a shoestring budget, the train is the cheapest way to see the Eiffel Tower.

#3 From Disneyland Paris to the Eiffel Tower by Private Transfer

Click here to book your private transfer with Welcome Pickups

The most convenient and most direct way to get from Disneyland Paris to the Eiffel Tower is by private transfer. You can easily arrange a pick up from the location of your choice at a time that works best for you. You can sit back and let the drivers handle the traffic.

One of the best transfer services offers Welcome Pickups .

The cars are cleaned and sanitized to the highest standards and between each ride, and drivers are professional, courteous, and English-speaking. They provide you with a sense of comfort and class for your trip to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland.

The best advantage when booking a private transfer is that you don’t have to share the ride with anyone else, so you can enjoy a fully private ride from Disney to the Eiffel Tower. It’s a great and very convenient option for families and hauling strollers.

#2 From Disneyland to the Eiffel Tower by Train

Read our post about using the Metro in Paris for more information

A train connects Disneyland Paris with central Paris. However, this train, the RER A, does not go all the way to the Eiffel Tower. Nevertheless, it is a great option to visit Paris by train if you are traveling on a budget, especially if you are familiar with Parisian public transportation.

You have several ways to get from Disney to the Eiffel Tower, the easiest is this one:

  • Disneyland train station Marne la Vallée/Chessy to Nation RER A (red line), 35 minutes ride
  • transfer to Metro Line 6 direction Charles de Gaulle-Etoile, get out at Bir-Hakeim, and walk 10 minutes to the Eiffel Tower

view from Bir Hakeim Bridge on the Eiffel Tower

Since March 2022, the train ride costs only 5€ one way and is a great option to save money, but it can be a little complex if you are unfamiliar with the area and is not convenient for small kids and strollers.

Cost:  10€ for adults and 5€ for kid’s roundtrip

Travel Time : 1.5 hours one way, so expect at least 3 hours by train for the day total.

#3 Book a Day Trip from Disneyland to Paris

#4 disneyland to paris center by car.

Driving by car to get to the Eiffel Tower is an option if you already have a car you can take, but it’s by far the least favorable way to get there.

While it can be a convenient option, and you can leave from just about anywhere in Disneyland, you will have to deal with Paris’ heavy traffic. Not to mention, finding a parking spot , can take some time as it’s incredibly difficult and expensive.

It’s about a 60-minute drive with light traffic, so prepare to be in the car for some time if you head there during peak traffic.

Cost:  The current cost of gas plus parking prices

Travel Time : 60 minutes with light traffic

Travel to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris is made easy with the availability of public transportation, private transfers, or getting there on your own with your car.

Personally, a private transfer is a way to go for the moderate price and the most convenient, especially if you are traveling with children and strollers.

How to get from Disneyland Paris to Eiffel Tower

One of the things that you need to know when planning a trip to Disneyland Paris (previously, and sometimes still affectionately referred to as Eurostar) is that Disneyland Paris is not in fact in Paris.

Disneyland Paris is actually located in the area known as Marne-la-Valle. Marne-la-Valle is actually just over 30kms east of Paris.

Whereas the Eiffel Tower is smack back in the heart of Paris. As such if you want to do a day trip to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris it is going to take a bit of forethought depending on how much time you have and how much you are willing to spend to get to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris.

For instance the best option for you will be largely dependent on whether you are traveling to Disneyland Paris on a budget in which case you may want to prioritise the cheapest option but if you are traveling to Disneyland Paris with toddlers speed may be more important.

Or maybe you want all the hassle taken out of the trip for you with an organised excursion.

Now, the options you have for getting to Disneyland Paris from Paris are:

  • Private Transfer

In this guide we will go through the pros and cons of each individual method of transfer, along with some step by step instructions to help you decide how you want to get to the Eiffel Tower from Eurodisney.

For more information on how to get to places from Disneyland Paris check out the below posts:

How do I get to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris by train?

RER Entrance - How to get to Disneyland Paris from Paris

How to get to Disneyland Paris from Paris

One of my favorite ways to get to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris is by train, the RER specifically. And as such we receive the questions “How do I get to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris by train?” pretty frequently on the blog. Therefore we will now give you step by step instructions to help you navigate the RER swell as an estimate on costs, time and transfers.

Now while the RER is usually easy to navigate the only difficulty with getting to the Eiffel Tower from Disneyland Paris is that there are a couple of changes that you need to do to get to your destination. However with these steps you should find the journey problem free.

The RER Station for Disneyland Paris isn’t called Disneyland Paris but Marne-la-Vallee which is sometimes written as Marne-V/Chessy.

When you enter the Marne-la-Vallee station you will see a row of ticket booths. The default language for all of these machines is French but you can very easily change the language to English (or German, Italian or Spanish).

The destination you are looking for on the ticket machine to get to the Eiffel Tower is Champ de Mars/Tour Eiffel. You just need to type this into the machine and select the amount of tickets you require.

It is easy to adjust number of tickets you need or any concessions you also require. The machines accept cards (Visa, Mastercard and Maestro) as well as Apple Pay and coins too NOT notes.

Alternatively you can go to the ticket office to get your tickets however the queues here tend to be very long which is why I would personally prefer to head to the ticket machines instead.

The great thing about Marne-la-Vallee station is that it is a terminus so you don’t have to worry about different trains too much.

At Marne-la-Vallee station you board the red line RER A train. You need to take the train all the way to Châtelet-Les-Halle which usually takes around 40 minutes.

Once at Châtelet-Les-Halle you need to transfer RER B. This is indicated by a blue line on the map. Once you have located the RER B Line you are looking for trains heading towards St-Rémy-les-Chevreuse (South).

Don’t worry if it is a crowded train however as you are only going one stop on this line. The next stop is St-Michel-Notre Dame and is where you need to disembark.

Then you need to do your final change. At St-Michel-Notre Dame  you need to transfer onto RER C which is the yellow line on the map. Due to the branch lines of yellow line you need to jump on one trains with one of the two following destinations on the front:

  • Versailles-Château
  • Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines
  • Pointoise

You destination of Champ de Mars/Tour Eiffel is only 4 stops away.

Once you arrive at the Champ de Mars/Tour Eiffel station you will have a short walk from the station to the Eiffel Tower itself.

Eiffel Tower To Disneyland Paris: Best Routes and Tips

Many Paris itineraries include visiting iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe, but what about Disneyland Paris?

There is something rather magical about Disneyland Paris that makes it a worthwhile addition to any Paris itinerary , with or without children. Despite not being particularly French, it is a huge magnet for tourists and easy to visit from the centre of Paris.

We have travelled to Paris many times and, on a few occasions, also ventured to Disneyland. Although our family are not big Disney fans, we do like adventure, fun and rollercoasters . Our favourite time to visit was in late September when the weather was warm and there were fewer crowds!

2 | RER Train (Paris Metro)

Travel like a local and use Parisian public transport. The RER train system takes you right to the entrance of Disneyland Paris.

Make your way 10 minutes on foot from the Eiffel Tower to the nearest station, Bir-Hakeim, on Metro line 6 to Nation . Then take the RER A (red line) towards Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy , the station directly serves Disneyland Paris with reassuring Mickey Mouse symbols that guide you to the gates of Disneyland Paris for your magical day.

With frequent departures, a reasonable €10 return, and around an hour travel time, the RER train is a budget-friendly, efficient option to get from Paris to Disneyland.

3 | Private Transfer

Arrange to be driven in luxury with a private transfer to Disneyland Paris from the Eiffel Tower. This option ensures a seamless journey, tailored to your schedule and preferences, without the bother of self-navigation or parking at Disneyland.

At approximately €50 per person one way, this is not the cheapest option, but it could be the most convenient.

Embrace the freedom of spontaneous travel by booking a taxi from the Eiffel Tower to Disneyland Paris. Taxis are readily available throughout the city and offer a convenient door-to-door service.

For safety, always use a reputable company. We use Uber , with prices ranging between €50 to around €110 depending on the vehicle size. This option may be pricier than public transport but provides flexibility and convenience.

5 | Self-Drive

Road trips are our favourite way to travel between adventures. If you hire a car and self-drive , you can get to Disneyland Paris in around 40 minutes from the Eiffel Tower. Of course, this is subject to traffic!

Hiring a car also gives you the freedom to navigate the stunning French countryside, finding hidden gems along the way. It is often the most cost-effective and convenient option for a family of five at around €200 per day. Remember to allow for fuel costs and the €30 per day parking fee at the park.

Navigating the Paris traffic Can be hectic!

Although the roads are well maintained and have clear signage, they are fast-moving. If you are not a confident driver, consider an alternative option. As with much of Europe, you may have to be over 30 years old to drive a hire vehicle.

How Many Days To Visit Disneyland Paris?

For some, one day is enough, while others could spend multiple days in the parks. The ideal duration to spend at Disneyland Paris will depend on your personal preferences. We found two days at Disney struck the right balance for a first visit. However long you choose, take time to embrace the magic of Disney!

One Day   At Disneyland Paris

If you have limited time to visit Disneyland, spending one day at the park can still be a worthwhile introduction. In one day, you can cover many of the highlights and key attractions in both the Disneyland and Walt Disney Studios Parks.

Two Days   At Disneyland Paris

A two-day visit would be our preferred option for families that want to enjoy both parks at a more relaxed pace. You can cover a wider variety of attractions, shows, parades, and character meet-and-greets without feeling rushed.

Three + Days   At Disneyland Paris

Families may choose to visit for three or more days to immerse themselves further in Disney magic. Although this allows for a more relaxed pace, favourite attractions can be revisited, and hidden gems such as themed restaurants and events can be explored.

Family Tip:  Consider your children’s age and interests, the time of year (weather and crowd levels), and any specific attractions or experiences on your family’s bucket list. You can always plan a return visit.

Hotels Near Disneyland Paris

If you have more than a one-day pass at Disney, or you would rather stay close for an early start or stay late for the closing fireworks (Disney illuminations nightly at 2130), there are many family-friendly accommodation options. Alternatively, reverse your trip and stay at Disneyland and a day trip to the Eiffel Tower.

The most budget-friendly Unofficial Disney hotel

On our first visit, we booked the Grand Magic Hotel , just outside the park, and it really was Magic! We stayed in one of their family rooms, which had a large double bed with a bunk for two kids. Even with an extra bed for our youngest, there was still plenty of space.

With a good breakfast to set you up for the day and a free shuttle to the park, this is our top pick unofficial Disney Hotel.

The Most Budget-friendly Disney Hotel

When you are talking about ‘official’ Disney Hotels, the term ‘budget-friendly’ becomes relative, but the 2* Hotel Santa Fe is as close as you’ll get. It’s a Pixar Cars, Route 66-themed hotel that does the basics really well. As you’d expect, you get the usual perks of staying in one of the park’s own hotels with early entry available and a free shuttle bus to the park.

The Most luxurious Disneyland Hotel

On our second visit, we stayed for one night at the 5* Disney Hotel . The booking included two-day park access with early entry and was, as you’d expect, very luxurious! The character meet-and-greets delighted the kids and the food was absolutely awesome. It is located right at the park gates with a private entrance, making it the ultimate option for convenience and comfort if your budget allows.

Note:  There are cheaper accommodation options, including campsites near Disneyland Paris. Many of them will run a shuttle bus but you may need to arrange your own transport. If you have the budget, staying in an official Disney hotel with kids is worth it for the early access to the park alone. It is also great fun to stay in a themed room and meet the Disney Characters .

If you are travelling all the way to Paris, you HAVE to visit Disneyland Paris for at least one day. I don’t make the rules…sorry!

Disneyland Paris is probably one of our most memorable trips together- so we advocate for everyone to experience it.

I’ve just returned from my 5th trip to Disneyland Paris, and I can say with certainty that there is something in the happiest place on earth for everyone . The idea of public transport can put some people off, but I’ve travelled there by bus, train, plane, and car and never had an issue yet. But when it comes down to it: what is the best way to get from the Eiffel Tower to Disneyland Paris?

Disney Castle- A sight To Behold If You Travel From Eiffel Tower to Disneyland Paris

The 5 Ways You Can Get From The Eiffel Tower To Disneyland Paris

There are 5 modes of transport you can take to get yourself from the heart of Paris to the happiest place on earth:

Which is the most cost effective? Most convenient? Which is better for families? Let’s look into each of these options a little more.

Hire cars are incredibly convenient and can be cost effective depending on how many people will be chipping in. For example if you are a group of 5 adults, the cost of a medium sized hire car starts at around €210 for 1 day . That is just €42 each for the freedom of a hire car.

Disneyland Paris charges €30 per day for their car park , and it is quite a walk from the car park to the gates.

Important Note : the minimum age to hire a car in France is 30 in some places- make sure to check this before you click “book”!

You will also need to take fuel into account. It is 47 km to Disneyland Paris from the Eiffel Tower- with fuel prices fluctuating, it is best to keep an eye out for any sudden spikes in pricing which may no longer make hiring a car worth it.

It takes around 40 minutes to drive to Disneyland Paris from the Eiffel Tower , and you will need to drive on some busy motorways/highways to get there. We recommend checking out this page – Driving in France – to read up on French road laws, and make sure you are prepared when driving in France.

Frequently Asked Questions

After all this information, you may still have some questions before you decide how you will be making the journey from the Eiffel Tower to Disneyland Paris:

Can I Fly From The Eiffel Tower To Disneyland?

There are no airports between the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland- it is only a 40 minute drive by car and train , so there is no need for a flight between the two. If a birds-eye-view of Disneyland Paris is what you are wanting, then make sure to check out PanoraMagique – a 6-minute hot air balloon experience located in Disney Village.

Can I Leave My Luggage At Disneyland?

Yes, you can! Before scanning your ticket to enter, you will see “ Luggage Hold ” by the gates. Head on over there, and you can leave your luggage for a fee (this varies between €10-20).

Pirate Ship At Disneyland Paris

This is then open until 1 hour after the park closes , but bear in mind that queues can form so make sure to be there in plenty of time.

You can also use the lockers at Marne-la-Vallée station to store your luggage, again, for a fee.

You Can Read More About Disneyland Paris’s Bag Policy Here!

What Time Are The Parks Open From/To?

At time of writing, the Disneyland Park is open 0930-2300, and Walt Disney Studios is open 0930-2200. However, these hours vary depending on the season.

For some events, there are extended closing times. For example, read about Halloween at Disneyland Paris to see why they stay open!

Can You See The Eiffel Tower From Disneyland Paris?

Technically, yes- however you will need a range of perfect weather conditions in order to do so. Disneyland is located around 47 km from Paris Center, and so you would need a completely clear day to catch a glimpse of the monument.

We recommend trying in months such as August where you are more likely to have a clear day; try looking from Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse or PanoraMagique

eiffel tower tour from disneyland paris

It will not be a perfect view of the Tower, but it would be pretty cool to say you’ve seen one of the most famous landmarks in the world whilst standing in Disneyland Paris.

If you are able to go to either of these attractions on a clear summers night, you are likely to see the twinkling lights of the Tower in the distance.

Can I Do Disneyland In One Day?

Yes, it is possible to do both parks at Disneyland Paris in one day . However, we recommend checking the various school holidays in France, and avoid going on the weekend. We personally went on the first Friday in July, and did not queue for anything at all, meaning we got to do both parks twice in the space of 12 hours!

Be sure to check out our post on Disneyland Paris Snacks so you can make sure you get them all in!

Does Disney Do Fireworks Every Night?

Yes, every night at 21:30, Disney Illuminations takes place . This extravaganza is an absolute sight and so worth it when visiting Disneyland Paris.

eiffel tower tour from disneyland paris

Whilst the RER and Metro does run late enough for you to stay and watch these, we don’t necessarily recommend using the Metro in Paris that late at night. If you are dead set on staying to watch the fireworks, make sure to factor that in to your decision of what mode of transport you choose to go between the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris.

Is Disneyland Paris Safe?

Disneyland Paris is incredibly safe! You will have to go through bag checks, security, and there is constant security disguised wandering around the parks. The biggest threat really is either dehydration from queuing in the summer months, or- if you have small children- losing them in the crowds.

This being said- just make sure to take plenty of water, and teach your child a “meet up point” in case you get split up. Disney Cast Mates are always nearby, so there is absolutely no danger at all.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris

Locally nicknamed “La dame de fer” (French for “Iron Lady”), the Eiffel Tower was constructed from 1887 to 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris and was initially criticized by some of France’s leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but it has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable and iconic structures in the world. Not only a symbol of France, the Eiffel Tower in Paris contains over 100 antennas to broadcast radio and television around the world. The Eiffel Tower is illuminated by 335 projectors every night for a spectacular light show. Designer Gustave Eiffel included a small apartment for himself at the top of the tower. The Eiffel Tower is not only an architectural marvel but also a symbol of France’s rich history and cultural significance. It remains one of the most visited and recognized landmarks in the world.

Eiffel Tower Paris and the Seine River

Construction : The Eiffel Tower, known as “La Tour Eiffel” in French, was designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel and his company, Eiffel et Cie. It was constructed as the centerpiece of the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Height : At its completion in 1889, the Eiffel Tower stood as the tallest man-made structure in the world, with a height of 324 meters (1,063 feet). Including its antennas, it reaches a height of 330 meters (1,083 feet). It retained its title as the world’s tallest structure until 1930 when the Chrysler Building in New York City surpassed it in height. Design : The tower is known for its distinctive lattice iron structure, which was considered revolutionary in its time. It was initially met with mixed reactions but has since become an iconic symbol of modern architecture. Visitors : The Eiffel Tower is one of the most visited monuments in the world, with millions of tourists coming from around the globe to see it each year. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of Paris from its observation decks. Elevators and Stairs : Visitors can ascend the tower using elevators or climb the stairs. There are three levels accessible to the public. The first and second levels have restaurants, shops, and exhibit spaces. The third level provides the best views of the city. Illumination : The tower is beautifully illuminated with thousands of lights every evening, creating a stunning spectacle. It is often lit up in different colors to celebrate various events and occasions. Maintenance : The Eiffel Tower requires ongoing maintenance due to its iron structure’s exposure to the elements. It is repainted every seven years to protect it from rust and maintain its iconic color, which is officially known as “Eiffel Tower Brown.” Historical Significance : During World War II, the French Resistance cut the tower’s elevator cables to hinder the German army’s access to the top. Despite this, German soldiers still climbed the tower to hoist the swastika flag, but it was replaced with the French tricolor soon after Paris was liberated.

The Secret Spot You Should Check Out In The Eiffel Tower On Your Paris Trip, Per Rick Steves

Paris skyline with the Eiffel Tower

If you can't get enough of  cities like Paris and envy those who call the French capital home, know that there is an address that even Parisians living in Gros-Caillou, the neighborhood at the heart of the city of love, are jealous of. The address in question is a small apartment located near the top of the Eiffel Tower, and the man it belonged to was the designer of the iconic monument — Gustave Eiffel.

Per travel guru Rick Steves, a leading authority on places to visit (and avoid) in Europe , this secret apartment is one of the Eiffel Tower's highlights. Despite being implored by many and even being offered small fortunes to let out the one-of-a-kind apartment for just a night, Eiffel never let anyone else use it and only hosted very select visitors, a notable one being Thomas Edison.

After being closed to the public for years, the apartment can now be peered into through a glass window. The seated wax figures of Eiffel and Edison aside, it's the rest of the apartment that is interesting to soak in because of how remarkably quaint it looks despite being situated at one of the world's most iconic addresses. The simple layout is partly because Eiffel spent the latter years of his life in the tower conducting research in a variety of fields. His apartment is only part of the secret — the Eiffel Tower was meant as a tool for scientific research from the start!

Gustav Eiffel's secret apartment is on the Eiffel Tower's top level

Wax figures of Gustave Eiffel and Thomas Edison in the Eiffel Tower

Despite being criticized by several luminaries during its construction for seemingly going against the architectural aesthetics of the city, the Eiffel Tower captured people's imaginations once it was finished in 1889. This made Gustave Eiffel's (not so) secret apartment at its very top all the more fascinating. Author Henry Girard mused in his book La Tour Eiffel de Trois Cent Métres (via Room One Thousand ) about living up there: "In the daytime, he can look out on the splendors of Paris... At night, in the clouds, soothed by the singing wind, he falls asleep by the light of the eternally watchful stars. Is there anyone who can describe to us the dreams that he has in his heavenly residence?"

The apartment, while not large, has wood paneling, wallpaper, and velvet-upholstered furniture. It consists of living and dining areas, a workshop, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Interestingly, it doesn't have a bedroom. You're unlikely to see more than a few of the tower's 18,000-odd metallic parts in it. However, a colossal metal beam running through the apartment is a stark reminder of its location. A ticket to the top floor lets you peek into the apartment. You can grab a flute of bubbly from the champagne bar and marvel, like Girard and countless others, at the prospect of living in these one-of-a-kind living quarters (but watch out for common Paris scams like the spilled beverage distraction )!

The Eiffel Tower was also a science lab

Gustave Eiffel and friend on steps near Eiffel Tower apartment

When visiting the Eiffel Tower, take a moment to consider how fortunate one is that it is still standing. The tower was originally meant to be demolished in 20 years and survived largely because Gustav Eiffel presented it as a tool for scientific research. It was originally built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle or Paris World Expo to explore the possibility of building a structure that stood at the then landmark height of 1,000 feet. The finished Eiffel Tower held the world record for the world's tallest tower for over 40 years until it was dethroned by the New York Chrysler Building. Apart from being a global icon, the tower was ideal for scientific experiments that weren't possible at lower heights and smaller scales.

Thus, right outside Gustave Eiffel's famed apartment were several scientific instruments he used for research. His studies ranged from aerodynamics to meteorology, gravity, radio transmission, and more. At one point, he installed a wind tunnel at the foot of the tower to test early airplane designs. During World War I, radio equipment installed in the tower successfully intercepted communications. In the following years, it was used to transmit radio programs and even television signals. While romanticizing the Eiffel Tower is inevitable, as is the prospect of living at the top of it, the tower and its designer both seemed much more steeped in scientific inquiry and practicality than living up to Parisian glamor. Now, you can enjoy both.

Soon, you can book tickets for Eiffel Tower using UPI, with French visa

M UMBAI: Indians are travelling abroad like never before, and Patrick Branco Ruivo, managing director of the Eiffel Tower Operating Company (SETE, in French), is determined to grab a fair slice of this pie.

“Indian visitors represent 4% of our total visitors right now,” said Ruivo, over tea at the Sofitel hotel in Mumbai, where he’s due to speak at the Global Fintech Festival this week. “My goal is to double that to 8% by 2026.”

Under Ruivo, SETE has taken many steps to make the Eiffel Tower a more appealing destination for Indian tourists. Earlier this year, it became the first merchant in Europe to accept payments through UPI, allowing Indians to pay for tickets, food and merchandise in rupees. At the Global Fintech event, Ruivo will announce a new campaign that will allow Indians to book tickets for the Eiffel Tower (using UPI) directly when applying for a French visa. They’ve also introduced vegetarian meals at the two restaurants at the Tower, with an eye to catering to Indian food habits.

“It’s very important to me that we personalise the experience for our visitors,” he said. “The way we welcome an Indian visitor shouldn’t be the same way we welcome a Brazilian visitor or an American visitor. I want to see how we can build economic and cultural bridges between our two cultures – France and India.”

It’s obvious that the former diplomat—he worked at the French embassy in Bangladesh for three years—sees his job as bigger than just the day-to-day management of one of the world’s largest tourist sites. Since joining SETE as managing director in 2018, he has made it his mission to transform the visitor experience at the Eiffel Tower, adding a stylish, upmarket flavour to the 135-year-old ‘Iron Lady’ of Paris.

There has been an extensive renovation of the Le Jules Verne restaurant on the tower’s second floor, which now boasts a second Michelin star, and a personalised VIP package that offers guests a behind-the-scenes experience, complete with a glass of champagne on the top floor. There’s also a new branding effort (La Tour Eiffel) to reposition the tower in the luxury space, earning it a coveted spot as an associate member of the Comité Colbert, the prestigious French luxury goods association.

“We are also working on co-branding with select brands,” he said. “Pierre Hermé (iconic French pastry chef) has come up with two special recipes for macarons, for example, that we sell at the tower.”

The biggest test Ruivo has faced over his tenure—apart from the COVID-19 crisis—was the race to get the Eiffel Tower ready for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The monumental facelift began all the way back in 2019 with a three-year repainting job. Nineteen previous layers of paint were stripped away, the signature brown it has sported since 1968 replaced with a yellow-brown hue that was architect Gustave Eiffel’s personal preference. The tower’s iconic vintage lifts also underwent renovations, as did the gardens surrounding it.

Earlier this year, five Olympic rings—each nine meters tall—were mounted on the tower for the Olympics, a complex engineering task that took two huge cranes to accomplish. Ruivo admitted that this was a “very challenging period” that required all his team’s grit and determination. But once the opening ceremony started, floats making their way down the Sienne with the tower dominating the backdrop, it all seemed worth it.

“Billions of people watched the opening ceremony, which ended with Céline Dion performing on the Eiffel Tower,” he said. “It was very important because there were three icons together—the tower, the Olympic rings and Céline Dion. And when you have three iconic things together, it lends to a lot of emotion. It was very beautiful and it touched the hearts of the people.”

With the Olympics in the rearview mirror, Ruivo is now looking to the future. His next goal is to work on “digitalisation”, expanding the Eiffel Tower’s online presence and making it more accessible to those who cannot—yet—travel to Paris in person. This includes some mundane developments, such as the recently launched, long-overdue e-shop, where people can buy souvenirs and co-branded merchandise online. But there are also more exciting experiments with virtual reality.

“One month ago, we launched an immersive experience at the tower, where you can put on a headset and (virtually) go up the tower,” he said. “But the idea is to one day make it possible to do that from your home in Mumbai.”

But, Ruivo is keen to caution, digitalisation cannot replace the human touch. “It’s very important to have that personalised experience, to be welcomed by people,” he said. “Because, for a lot of people, visiting the Eiffel Tower is a life’s dream. We have to make their visit like a suspended moment in time. A moment that they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
