10 Days in Northern Pakistan

If you’re considering your first visit to Pakistan and want an itinerary to rival all others, I’ve got you covered. I recently spent 10 days in Northern Pakistan and I had the adventure of a lifetime. If you are planning a visit to Pakistan for the first time, these are the highlights you cannot miss.

Why you should visit Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the most underrated travel destinations for a variety of reasons. Not without its’ problems, Pakistan is known for having a complex and complicated history since it was established in 1947. For that reason I would personally recommend a guided tour for your first visit, though have no reason not to encourage a solo journey given my own experience.

For the sake of clarity, travelling solo (and in particular as a female) in the likes of Bali or Bangkok is very different to travelling solo in Pakistan. If you are new to solo travel I would suggest gaining experience in countries more populated by tourists and indeed, with a more developed approach toward tourism and foreign visitors.

Because I didn’t travel through Pakistan as a solo female, I would suggest reading this post by The Broke Backpacker for further information and clarity given her thorough documentation on the topic (and brilliant coverage of Pakistan!)

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

This itinerary follows my 10-day adventure throughout Pakistan, starting in Islamabad. The tour was put together by our guide Atta (you can email him here) who works full time as a guide in Northern Pakistan (more on Atta later).

Islamabad (or Isloo to the locals) is the capital city of Pakistan but not even close to the biggest city. There are a whopping 213 million people in Pakistan and just 1 million in Islamabad. That makes the city great for a stopover and introduction to the country. I’d recommend at least one full day to explore Islamabad, though it wouldn’t hurt to allow for two and take advantage of shaking jet lag at the same time.

Start the day right with one of the best coffees in Islamabad , found at Mocca Cafe in Kohsar Market. While you are there be sure to wander around and begin to experience the local shopping. I would suggest taking advantage of the opportunity to buy a scarf or two, as you will need to wear a scarf when entering mosques and as a general rule, it is a good idea to have on one hand for certain situations that call for covering up as a sign of respect to the local culture.

For a beautiful pashmina (which are in fact from Nepal), head over to Maharaja Handicrafts at F6 markez, school road. For Afghan Handicrafts and antiques head over to the few shops around the corner from Maharaja on Aga Khan Road near the flower shops.

Check in to the Serena Hotel if you want an unforgettable introduction to Pakistani culture, architecture, and opulent interiors inside what is considered the most beautiful hotel in Islamabad. The hotel has all the perks you could ever need, including an outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre and huge restaurant to enjoy a buffet breakfast.

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

An important note on this itinerary: it relies entirely on this first flight from Islamabad to Skardu, which is unfortunately subject to many cancellations given the weather path entering the mountain ranges in Skardu. Should your flight be cancelled and you are travelling as part of a tour, alternative arrangements will be made for you. If you are travelling on your own accord, I would recommend having a few days of flexibility in case of cancellation, as there is only one flight a day and it is entirely weather dependent.

Unfortunately our trip began in just that fashion: a cancelled flight to Skardu, resulting in a 12 hour drive toward that direction and a prompt in us reversing our itinerary. With a dose of optimism I am hoping the same does not happen to you, so will proceed to share the itinerary as it was originally planned as we still visited all of these places – just in reverse and with much more time in a bus!

On the way to Skardu be sure to request a seat on the left hand side of the plane for the best photo opportunities – you won’t regret it as you enter the mountain ranges in the North!

Once you arrive be sure to stock up on dried apricots, walnuts and almonds for the long journey by road over the coming days. There were days where we would not eat for 12 hours at a time given the remote locations of these towns, so it is better to be prepared!

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Shigar Fort

A couple of hours drive from Skardu and you will arrive at Shigar Fort, one of Northern Pakistan’s most beautiful hotels occupying an old fort. The experience is real and raw – almost so real that it feels as if you have stepped in to a movie set because it is so picturesque. The town itself is also great to walk around during the day amidst the hustle and bustle or you can take a bicycle for a more relaxed afternoon to stretch the legs after your long plane and bus journey.

If you can time your luck, there may be a local polo match taking place nearby. Ask your guide or one of the locals for updated information – this is a popular sport in the Gilgit-Baltistan region and known popular as “Game of the Kings”.

Khaplu Palace Serena Hotels | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Khaplu Palace

It is a further three hours drive to reach Khaplu Palace, but this is hands down one of the most beautiful properties to stay in all of Pakistan and indeed, the highlight of my trip. If you have time to spend more than one night, this property is best enjoyed at a slower pace. Be sure to make use of the guided palace tour as there is much to learn about the history of the palace and its surrounds.

The Royal High Tea is an experience not to be forgotten and is served on a terrace overlooking the palace grounds and has sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. If you ask politely the hotel staff may also let you explore the rooftop of the palace, which has 360 degree views over Khaplu.

Khaplu Palace Serena Hotels | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

If you are feeling more active and adventurous, there is a great panoramic view to be had at Thoqsikhar , a two hour hike from the palace. Ask the hotel to pack a picnic lunch or start your journey early in the morning with the sun and return to the palace for a relaxed lunch in the gardens.

If you have time the day you are checking out, consider stopping at Bara , a small town just 20 minutes from Khaplu and en route to your next destination: Gilgit. Here you will find a wool spinning and weave centre that trains and supports local women. This is also a great place to purchase a local Baltistani topi.

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

It is a lengthy drive from Khaplu to Gilgit, so be sure to leave in good time if you wish to see Gilgit before dark and perhaps even take a hike to the water channel above the city that offers views of the valley below and also features the victory monument of Taj Mughul as well as the 7th century Kargah Buddha rock carving . Whilst in Gilgit we stayed at the Serena Hotel and I was starting to realise how much I appreciated these beautiful hotels being all across Pakistan! They were extremely welcoming and felt like coming home. Buffet breakfasts were a highlight as were the interiors, always dedicated to the local area and paying tribute to influences in Central Asia.

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Karimabad, Hunza

If you are going to spend a few days in any one place, I would highly recommend basing yourself for a few days in the Hunza Valley. Renowned for its charm, cleanliness and 995 literacy rate, Hunza is commonly regarded as one of the most beautiful cities to visit in the North of Pakistan.

If you’re feeling peckish, start your day at Cafe de Hunza for a slice of famous walnut cake with an iced latte (which is actually a frappe for ye Westerners) and so refreshing after days and days of instant coffee!

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

There are many towns to explore in Hunza, but with limited time we made our way to Gulmit, one of the highlights in the Hunza Valley. Here there are a number of women’s initiatives and it was one of the few cities where we saw women in the streets. To support local communities, some great items to purchase as souvenirs or gifts to take home are apricot creams and oils, gem stones, woollen shawls and woodcraft. You will find many artisans and shop keepers on the streets who are more than willing to help (many of which speak perfect English) and not once was I hassled to buy anything throughout my time in Pakistan.

Northern Pakistan itinerary | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Not too far from Hunza, I would highly recommend a visit to Attabad lake . This lake appeared  after a landslide that killed 20 people known as the Attabad disaster. The lake collects glacial silt from the surrounding mountains, resulting in its turquoise blue colour in Spring and Summer. Further down the road edging closer to the border with China is the rickety bridge known as “The Indiana Jones Bridge” for its likeness, though it never appeared in the films. It is totally worth a visit but not for the faint hearted!

Karakoram Highway Pakistan | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Karakoram Highway

Considered to be one of the greatest engineering accomplishments of the 20th century, the Karakoram Highway connects Pakistan and China and is one of the highlights of Northeastern Pakistan. The entire journey is 805 miles long but you don’t need to drive the entire way to experience some of the epic scenery that takes you through hair-raising turns, endless mountain ranges and many small villages where locals will wave as you pass by.

Fairy Meadows Pakistan | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Fairy Meadows

If adventure travel is more your style and you’re ready for one wild ride, do not miss the chance to jump on the jeeps and make your way to fairy Meadows along a steep cliff edge. After a one hour drive to the end of the road, it is just a 1.5-2 hour hike to the Fairy Meadows camp, which is a popular stop en route to the Base Camp for Nanga Parbat.

If time is on your side you might consider embarking on the trek to base camp the following morning – according to my guide this was a further 10-12 hour hike with basic lodging at base camp. The Swiss-style cabins at Fairy Meadows are lovely and lush, complete with hot water and electricity! This was a beautiful part of the world to wake up and enjoy the crisp mountain air so if time is on your side, you may even want to stay an extra night.

Totally agree with the writer about 10 days itinerary in Northern Pakistan Tour. If any one wish to hikes more then just Islamabad Tour, 10 days itinerary is even not enough. We visited Karakorum hike spending 2 weeks time staying in a beautiful lodge trek just for seeing some sights. K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II are the highest peaks of Karakoram Mountain Ranges that are clearly visible if you hikes.

A few snapshots from Island life in Koh Samui 🥹🌴 just shared my blog posts from this trip in Thailand and now craving mango sticky rice pudding, the kindness and hospitality of Thai people and those buffet breakfast spreads (the kinda ones that keep you full til dinner). My stay at @fskohsamui was like something out of a story book. Especially that last photo - that night was one to remember 🫶🏼 #kohsamui #thailand #travel #travelblog #thailandtravel

Table of Contents

The Breathtaking Landscapes of the Northern Areas

The Northern Areas of Pakistan boast some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world. From snow-capped peaks to lush green valleys, every corner of this region offers a sight to behold. One of the highlights is the Karakoram Highway, often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. This legendary route takes you through dramatic mountainous terrain, with breathtaking views at every turn. As you traverse the highway, marvel at the towering peaks of Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi, which dominate the horizon.

The valleys of Hunza, Skardu, and Gilgit are a haven for nature lovers. Hunza Valley, in particular, is known for its stunning cherry blossoms that paint the landscape in vibrant hues during the spring season. Skardu, located at the confluence of the Indus and Shigar Rivers, offers a picturesque setting with its clear blue skies, lush meadows, and rugged mountains. Gilgit, the capital of the Northern Areas, is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and offers a gateway to some of the region’s most iconic attractions.

The Northern Areas are also home to several glaciers, including the Baltoro Glacier, the Biafo Glacier, and the Hispar Glacier. These frozen wonders are a sight to behold, with their shimmering ice formations and imposing presence. Whether you choose to hike along their icy trails or simply admire their splendor from afar, the glaciers of the Northern Areas are sure to leave you in awe.

Exploring the Majestic Mountains of the Region

The Northern Areas of Pakistan are a paradise for mountain enthusiasts. With the mighty Karakoram and Himalayan ranges dominating the skyline, this region offers countless opportunities for trekking and mountaineering. K2, the second highest peak in the world, is a major draw for climbers from around the globe. The challenging climb to its summit is reserved for the most experienced mountaineers, but even the base camp offers a mesmerizing experience.

For those seeking a less daunting adventure, the Fairy Meadows in the Nanga Parbat region are a must-visit. This picturesque meadow offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and serves as a base camp for treks to Nanga Parbat, also known as the “Killer Mountain.” The trek to Fairy Meadows is relatively moderate, making it accessible to a wider range of hikers.

Another popular destination for mountain exploration is the Deosai National Park. Located at an altitude of over 4,000 meters, this high-altitude plateau is often referred to as the “Roof of the World.” With its rolling hills, crystal-clear streams, and diverse wildlife, Deosai offers a unique and unforgettable trekking experience.

Serene Lakes and Their Charm

The Northern Areas of Pakistan are blessed with an abundance of pristine lakes, each with its own unique charm. One of the most famous is Lake Saif-ul-Malook, located in the Kaghan Valley. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, this emerald-green lake is a sight to behold. Legend has it that fairies descend to the lake on full moon nights, adding an element of enchantment to its already magical ambiance.

Another must-visit lake is Attabad Lake, situated in the Hunza Valley. This stunning turquoise lake was formed as a result of a massive landslide, which blocked the flow of the Hunza River. Today, Attabad Lake is a popular spot for boating and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Rama Lake, nestled in the Astore Valley, is yet another gem of the Northern Areas. This serene lake is surrounded by lush green meadows and towering mountains, creating a picture-perfect setting. The peaceful atmosphere and untouched beauty of Rama Lake make it an ideal spot for relaxation and contemplation.

Famous Trekking Trails in the Northern Areas

The Northern Areas of Pakistan offer a plethora of trekking trails, each showcasing the region’s natural beauty in a unique way. One of the most famous trekking routes is the Karakoram Highway trek. This challenging trail takes you through some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes, offering panoramic views of the Karakoram range.

Exploring amazing destinations in Northern Pakistan

exploring northern pakistan

Northern Pakistan is a land of beauty and adventure. This seemingly small region is blessed with all the gifts of nature, including all four seasons, vast mountain ranges, beautiful lakes and rivers, blossoming flowers, rich fruits, and unique wildlife.

Exploring Northern Pakistan

The northern region of Pakistan includes the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province and the famous region of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). The latter is especially known for its attractive tourist locations and mountainous regions. Its district Gilgit and its mountainous valley of Hunza are the two most famous tourist destinations.

KPK’s beautiful Kaghan valley consists of a widely famous town Naran , the main center of tourism in the valley. Known as a “virtual paradise”, this picturesque town is home to glorious landscapes, breathtakingly beautiful lakes, and snow-covered mountain peaks. gi

Mountain Ranges in Northern Pakistan

Gilgit-Baltistan consists of three of the world’s highest mountain ranges: the Karakoram, the Himalayas, and the Hindukush. GB is home to 18 of the world’s top 50 highest mountain peaks and 3 of the world’s 7 longest glaciers. The highest peak in the Gilgit district is Distaghil Sar, a magnificent 7,885 meters high mountain of the Karakoram range. It is the 7 th highest mountain peak in Pakistan and 19 th highest in the world.

Northern Pakistan

GB’s Hunza valley is famous for its breathtaking view of the local mountain queen, Rakaposhi (7788 meters high), along with other high peaks of Karakoram. The region boasts several high mountains, famous for their mesmerizing sunset and sunrise views.

Naran is home to Kaghan’s highest mountain peak Malika Parbat, a 5,290-meter-high peak of the Himalayas. Naran’s famous Lake Saiful Muluk offers the best view of this mountain. The peak is mirrored in the lake’s deep blue waters on a clear day. Naran also consists of other less-high peaks that add to its beauty.

Valleys of Northern Pakistan

Gilgit is home to the beautiful Gilgit Valley through which the Gilgit river flows gracefully. Naltar valley is also located here. It is abundant in pine trees, striking landscapes, flowers, vegetation, snow-covered mountains, and wildlife. It is also famous for skiing activities in winter. Kargah valley is known for trout fishing, stunning views, and an 8th-century Buddha carving on a rock wall. Other worth-visiting valleys are the Bagrote and Danyore valleys.

Hunza ’s Duikar valley offers the most spectacular sunset and sunrise views in Pakistan, and also a view of the galaxies on a clear dark night. The entire Hunza-Nagar district can be viewed from this valley. Situated between Batura and Passu glaciers, Passu valley is home to the famous “Passu Cones” or the Tupopdan peak. It is one of the most photographed peaks in Pakistan. Gulmit and Hopar valleys are also very popular tourist attractions.

The town of Naran is situated in the Naran Valley, which is a major tourist attraction due to its glorious views of the Himalayan mountains. Being a valley itself, Naran is a breathtakingly beautiful spot for climbing and hiking. The views from the top regions of the valley are of the vastly spreading lush green landscapes accompanied by glorious mountains all around. The valley is also great for trout and mahseer fishing.

Lakes in Northern Pakistan Region

Gilgit-Baltistan is home to over 6000 lakes and there still are over a thousand glacial lakes yet to be explored. Satpara lake is considered to be the most charming lake among tourists. Naltar lake is a crystal clear emerald lake. It is surrounded beautifully by pine trees and snow-capped mountains. Other popular lakes among tourists include Handrab, Kachura, Rainbow Lake, and several others.

Hunza   valley is home to the tourists’ favorite and most visited Attabad lake. It is famous for its unmatched beauty of deep blue-colored waters and the dramatic reflections of mountains surrounding it. The majestic Shimshal lake of Hunza is another major tourist attraction and is basically an accumulation of melted glacier water. Hunza’s Borith Lake is a perfect spot for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.

Naran  consists of 4 major lakes: Saif ul Malook lake, Aansu (teardrop) lake, Lulusar lake, and Dudiptsar lake. Lake Saif ul Malook attracts a large number of tourists every year due to its interesting history, trout fishing, striking beauty, and a marvelous view of Malika Parbat peak. Aansu Lake is a relatively small lake that gets its name from its strange teardrop-like shape. The awe-inspiring Dudiptsar and Lulusar lakes are also famous for their captivating beauties.

Unique Animals of Nothern Pakistan

Gilgit-Baltistan is home to a number of unique and endangered species of animals like Marco Polo sheep, Markhor, ibex, urial, lynx, marmots, blue sheep, black and brown bears, chakor, and many other mammals and birds.

Hunza is home to the largely endangered species of snow leopard. Steps are being taken to conserve the region’s unique wildlife which is why hunting such animals is largely banned.

Naran also boasts unique and beautiful wildlife. Pakistan’s national animal Markhor and wild animals like leopards, ibexes, weasels, foxes, etc can be found in the valley of Naran, Kaghan.

Adventurous Sports in Northern Pakistan

Gilgit is a place for mountaineering enthusiasts who love adventurous sports like hiking, climbing, trekking, skiing and other allied activities. The climb to the world’s 2 nd highest peak K-2 also begins from Gilgit-Baltistan.

Hunza is popular among tourists for white sports. The waters of Hunza lake are perfect for sports such as rafting, boating, and fishing. Horse-riding in the region’s vast lush green landscapes is also quite popular. Polo is an immensely liked sport among the locals and is a major attraction for tourists as well.

Naran conducts mountain bike races for both national and international cycling enthusiasts. River rafting in the valley’s Kunhar river, fishing, ice skating, trekking, and other similar sports are quite popular in this region.

The weather in Northern Pakistan

Since both Hunza and Gilgit are parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, their weather conditions are also quite similar. Spring (Feb-May) brings forth blooming flowers and fruits while the summer season (June-Sep) is perfect for all mountaineering activities. Winter (Dec-March) is the best time for sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Autumn (Oct-Nov) has a unique, beautifully gloomy beauty of yellowed falling leaves and colorful trees.

Naran gets heavy rainfall in summer and snowfall in winter. The average annual temperature of the region is 10.1 °C. Pakistanis usually go to Naran to avoid the scorching heat of the summer season. Thus Naran remains the busiest in summer and attracts international tourists on large scale.

To sum up, the overall cool climate of Northern Pakistan is itself a great tourist attraction. Each region of this side of the country has different experiences to offer in different seasons. Tourism in North Pakistan is gaining progress rapidly as easier and more accessible routes are created. Tourists from and outside Pakistan visit these sites with travel companies to make the most of their trips and have a memorable time.

best places to visit in northern pakistan

The Himalayas in Pakistan have long been an irresistible place to visit for many travelers © Ratnakorn Piyasirisorost / Getty Images

The Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges have long drawn adventurous tourists to northern Pakistan , but these famous summits are far from the only beautiful places to visit in the country.

In fact, there are fascinating places to visit spread right across the country, from the cosmopolitan coastal metropolis of Karachi to the centuries-old Mughal city of Lahore .

Our list of best places to visit takes in varied landscapes and architecture, thousands of years of history, and some of the best aspects of Pakistan’s vibrant contemporary culture. Together, it’s a reminder of why Pakistan is one of Asia’s most exciting tourist destinations. It's time to start planning your trip!

Best place for culture

If you only have time to visit one place in Pakistan, make sure it’s Lahore . A Unesco City of Literature, and home to multiple Unesco World Heritage Sites, this ancient Mughal city is not only one of the most historic places in the country, it also hosts a thriving modern cultural scene.

Lahore Fort has recently been restored with support from the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the Shalimar Gardens are one of the world’s finest Persian-style gardens, and the magnificent Badshahi Mosque is one of Pakistan’s most famous landmarks; in fact, it's one of the most striking religious buildings on the planet. The city’s food scene is fabulous, too.

Planning tip: Book a hotel in or near Lahore’s Walled City so you can walk to many of the monuments.

Best place for spirituality

Multan is known as the City of Saints and it continues to be an important regional center for Sufism, the mystical form of Islam. Multan has been inhabited longer than almost anywhere else in Asia – Alexander the Great besieged the city in the 4th century BCE, adding to Multan’s claim to be the most historic spot in the country.

The most beautiful places to visit are the city’s Sufi shrines, especially the Tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam with its delicate turquoise tiles, and the predominantly pink Mausoleum of Shamsuddin Sabzwari, which is topped by a bright yellow dome.

Planning tip: Multan is at its busiest during the Urs festivals, which commemorate the death anniversaries of local saints. The festival dates follow the lunar calendar and therefore change from year to year – check dates for the coming year when planning your trip.

A long empty stretch of the Karakoram Highway with mountain peaks in the background

3. Karakoram Highway

Best place for scenery

The 1300km-long (808 miles) Karakoram Highway is one of the world’s greatest road trips. There are front-row views of Nanga Parbat (8126m/26,660ft), Rakaposhi (7788m/25,551ft) and other dramatic mountain peaks from the road, which passes through Gilgit and Hunza as it meanders north towards the border with China .

Traveling the section from Gilgit to the Chinese border is one of Asia’s greatest adventures – you can fly to Gilgit from Islamabad and hire a 4WD vehicle and driver locally to explore.

Planning tip: The northern part of the Karakoram Highway is closed between January and April due to heavy ice and snow, so plan accordingly.

4. Rohtas Fort

Best place for military history

The territory covered by the modern state of Pakistan has long been contested, and you’ll find fortifications all across the country recalling past battles for supremacy. The largest of these is Rohtas Fort near Dina.

This Unesco World Heritage Site is considered to be the best surviving example of Mughal military architecture in Asia, with 4km (2.5 miles) of sandstone walls and 14 seemingly impenetrable gates, protecting a vast and well-preserved complex of mosques, step wells, palaces and domestic buildings.

Planning tip: Rohtas lies north of Lahore, just off the Grand Trunk Road (NH5) – visit en route between Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi.

5. Fairy Meadows

Best place for hiking

The Fairy Meadows National Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places to visit in Pakistan. Mighty Nanga Parbat (8126 m/26,660ft), the ninth-highest mountain in the world, rises above fertile grasslands and alpine forest, home to brown bears and deer. Wildflowers paint the meadows in spring and summer and the serene landscapes are reflected in the water of small, still lakes.

Planning tip: There are a few tourist cottages and guesthouses at Fairy Meadows, but camping brings you closer to nature. Get here from Raikot Bridge, on the Karakoram Highway south of Gilgit.

The partially excavated archeological site of Mohenjo-daro in Pakistan

6. Moenjodaro

Best place for ancient history

Moenjodaro , meaning “The Mound of the Dead”, was built in Sindh more than 4500 years ago, making it one of the world’s oldest cities. This was the center of the technologically and culturally advanced Indus Valley Civilisation, which stretched not only across Pakistan but also into Afghanistan and India. This was the very first site in South Asia to be designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The ruins are huge – archaeologists have excavated streets, granaries and guard towers, and even a grand public bath.

7. Shandur Pass

Best place for spectator sports

The Shandur Pass lies at 3720m (12,204ft) above sea level in Gilgit-Baltistan, one of the most beautiful mountain regions in Pakistan. Close to the idyllic Shandur Lake, this lofty pass is the location of Pakistan’s most famous polo ground, which hosts an annual tournament between the teams of Gilgit and Chitral. The matches are played on horseback with free-style rules and the Polo Festival attracts thousands of spectators.

Planning tip: The Shandur Polo Festival dates are fixed every year from 7-9 July but plan ahead as there’s heavy demand for accommodation and transport.

A camel walking across the beach at sunset in Karachi, Pakistan

Best place for nightlife

You won’t find many Western-style nightclubs in Pakistan, as the country is officially alcohol-free (unless you have a government permit), but there’s still plenty to do in Karachi once the sun goes down. Venues like Base Rock Cafe and The Second Floor (T2F) attract an enthusiastic audience of live music lovers, and Burns Road and Rashid Minhas Road are packed every evening as foodies flock to their buzzing restaurants and street food stalls. Combined with the city’s expansive beaches, it’s an experience many travelers are surprised to find in Pakistan.

9. Katas Raj Temples

Best place for myths and legends

Modern Pakistan has a Muslim-majority population, but before the arrival of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other faiths were prevalent. The pool in the center of the Katas Raj Temples in Punjab is said to have been formed from the tears of the Hindu god Shiva, and in the Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata , the Pandava brothers were exiled here.

Early travelers mentioned the presence of a Buddhist stupa, too, and you can still see its remains alongside the ruins of multiple temples, a small fort, and havelis. The buildings are in poor condition and little conservation work has been done, but Katas Raj remains a remarkable place to explore.

A view across the water from the pavilion in Hiran Minar, Pakistan

10. Hiran Minar

Best place for a day trip

We all love our pets, but the Mughal Emperor Jahangir took his affection to extreme lengths when he built Hiran Minar for his favorite antelope, Mansraj, who he proclaimed to be "Lord of all animal beings". The early 16th-century tomb, minaret, and pavilion overlook a huge reservoir in the center of what was once a royal hunting ground but today is a wildlife reserve. Animals and birds still come out of the scrub forest to drink, so it remains one of the best places to visit in Pakistan for wildlife watching, fishing, and generally relaxing in peaceful surroundings.

Planning tip: Hiran Minar is an hour’s drive outside Lahore and is easy to combine with the nearby Sheikhupura Fort.

Best for pomp and circumstance

The Attari-Wagah border post is the only place where you can cross between Pakistan and India by land. Its daily closing ceremony is also one of the most over-the-top examples of military posturing you’ll ever see, with soldiers from both sides competing to show off who can kick higher, shout louder, parade more in sync, and grow the most impressive facial hair. Take a seat in the stands and join the cheering, flag-waving crowds for a very entertaining afternoon out.

Best Places to Visit in Pakistan

From the Karakoram, Hindu Kush and Himalayan mountain ranges to the serene alpine lakes that call them home, wondrous landscapes aren’t in short supply in northern Pakistan. But where exactly are the best places to visit in Pakistan?

Below is a selection of our favourite destinations in Pakistan, whether you’re looking to soak up some culture, put your adventure skills to use or simply discover pure serenity.

Hunza Valley

Location: In the extreme north of Pakistan next to the Chinese border, within the Gilgit-Baltistan region .

How to get there: Fly from Islamabad to Gilgit, then continue by road. You can rent a car and drive one and a half to two hours or take a bus, travelling along the beautiful Karakoram Highway to Hunza.

There’s no doubt that Hunza Valley is one of the top places to visit in Pakistan. The region’s culture has been shaped over time, not only by its inhabitants but also by the travellers and merchants that have passed through along the Silk Road. Hunza is a largely untapped haven of culture and warm hospitality, with more than its fair share of natural beauty.

Snow-covered mountains rule the landscape here, their peaks often hidden by ethereal mist. It’s one of the best places to visit in Pakistan for adventure – think cycling or biking along the Karakoram Highway, hiking mountain trails, like Ondra Poygah, and exploring ancient glaciers, like Batura glacier.

There are plenty of important cultural spots to explore too, including Baltit Fort and Altit Fort, both past residences of Hunza’s royal family. Attabad Lake is also well worth a visit. It has a rather sad tale to tell. Though an incredibly beautiful part of Hunza’s landscape now, it only came into existence in 2010, when a landslide destroyed the village that sat where the lake is now. The landslide also blocked the Hunza River, which led to the lake’s creation.

Find out more about Hunza Valley Explore Hunza Valley .

Hunza Valley View From Duiker

Swat Valley

Location: In the north of Pakistan, close to the Afghanistan border.

How to get there: Fly to either Peshawar city or Islamabad, then take a bus or rent a car and drive to Swat Valley. By car, the journey takes three and a half hours from Peshawar or four hours from Islamabad.

How to get there: Fly into Lahore. Many major airlines service Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.

The city of Lahore is the cultural centre of Pakistan’s Punjab province and the second-largest city in the country after Karachi. In contrast to Islamabad, Lahore has stood for centuries and its rich history can be seen in its architecture: some stunningly intricate and some far more disorderly.

The old part of the city used to be bordered by a wall but, for the most part, the wall has been replaced with open parks and gardens filled with greenery and water. To the southeast of the old city is the newer part, which fades out into the bustling suburbs.

The old city is home to the ornately decorated Wazīr Khān Mosque and Lahore Fort, a truly beautiful example of Mughal architecture. This fortress was constructed in the Mughal era and includes palaces, gardens and museums. It’s a beautiful place to explore, decorated in marble and stunning tile work. Experiencing Lahore’s food scene is also a must. Get a taste of authentic Pakistani dishes by sampling the city’s food street and wander the Anarkali Bazaar to shop for local food, clothes and other treasures.

Lahore-Fort

How to get there: Fly to Bacha Khan International Airport Peshawar from a selection of Middle Eastern destinations or catch a domestic flight from Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad. It’s also possible to reach via road from Lahore or Islamabad, either by renting a car or catching a bus.

Peshawar, meaning ‘frontier town’, is the capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and acts as its cultural and economic centre. It’s not far away from the Khyber Pass which was once part of the Silk Road. From textile to sugar mills, the city boasts a fair few industries that make it a prosperous place.

It used to be the capital of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Gandhara. Today, the city’s bustling streets are full of rickshaws taking people from A to B, historic buildings and remnants from its Buddhist past. Peshawar’s beautiful architecture makes it a dream to explore, like the 17th century Mughal Mahabat Khan Mosque, with its highly decorated interior and welcoming courtyard. Make sure to visit the Peshawar Museum in the centre of the city too; not only is the historic building itself a treat to see, but it also houses artefacts that help shed a light on Peshawar’s history.

The Valley is set at the eastern face of Nanga Parbat, the Killer Mountain. Laila Peak, Chongra Peak and Rakhiot Peak help form the awe-inspiring backdrop too, along with the thick forests of pine, cedar and fir trees.

One of the best spots to visit in Astore Valley is Rama Meadows, near the city of Astore. At an elevation of 3,300 metres, these pristine meadows are famous for their lush green plains, babbling brooks and pretty views. Trekking up from the Meadows is a must too, where you can visit the stunning Rama Lake. Astore Valley is also a great place from which to visit Deosai Plateau, the 2 nd highest plateau in the world.

Sheosar Lake Dewsai

Location: In the mid-north of Pakistan; the gateway to northern Pakistan regions.

How to get there: Visitors can fly into Islamabad. Many major airlines operate flights here.

T he capital city of Pakistan is surprisingly modern. Though it's never neglected its history nor its cultural influences, it’s an undeniably forward-thinking city. It’s a well-thought-out metropolis, created as a capital city in  14 August 1967 . The city is laid out in a grid pattern, with an abundance of lush green spaces too.

Though many are tempted to treat Islamabad as a city best passed through on the way to Pakistan’s stunning northern regions, it’s an emerging travel destination and a stay here is the best way to experience the modern side of Pakistan. There’s plenty to see and do, including the impressive Shah Faisal Mosque and the Pakistan Monument. Visitors can also take in the incredible views across Islamabad as they hike along Margalla Hills trails, and sample delicious food at some great restaurants that sit atop the hills.

If you fancy experiencing the older side of Pakistan whilst in Islamabad, take a trip to Islamabad’s nearby sister city, Rawalpindi – it’s older, sprawling and slightly chaotic.

Islamabad is a fairly walkable city. An evening stroll around Fatima Jinnah Park is the ideal way to soak up the city’s atmosphere. In fact, walking might just be the best way to get a real feel for the place. If you don’t fancy walking all the time, however, getting a taxi or an Uber is another good way to get around or, of course, you could rent a car.

Thanks to the Neelum and Jhelum Rivers that snake through it, the region is covered in lush greenery, with the magnificent Himalayas as its backdrop. The only thing that could rival the beauty of its landscapes is Kashmir’s culture, shaped over centuries by communities that have travelled here from across the world. Many of the locals practise Sufism, a mystical form of the Islamic religion. Look out for the many Sufi shrines across the region, like the Pir Chinasi shrine that sits atop the Pir Chinasi mountain.

Some other incredible places to visit in Azad Kashmir include the Leepa Valley, with its terraced rice paddies, the ruins of the Red Fort in Muzaffarabad valley, and the tranquil Banjosa Lake.

Middle East latest: Israel launches retaliatory strike against Iran

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency has said air defence batteries have been fired in several provinces; Israel carried out an operation in Iran tonight, a person familiar with the matter tells our US partner network NBC News.

  • US vetoes request for Palestine UN membership
  • Analysis:  This strike has escalation written all over it
  • Analysis:  Attack could send three messages
  • Live reporting by Jess Sharp

Iran has no plan for immediate retaliation to the apparent Israeli attack this morning, a senior Iranian official has said.

Speaking to Reuters, the unnamed official said the country was looking at whether the operation was an "infiltration" rather than an attack.

"The foreign source of the incident has not been confirmed," they said.

"We have not received any external attack, and the discussion leans more towards infiltration than attack."

The Israeli military has declined to comment on reports of the strike.

We have just been speaking to Negar Mortazavi, a senior fellow from the Centre for International Policy about the escalating situation in the Middle East.

Talking about this morning's apparent Israeli attack on Iran, she said the "red lines have been blurred" in the last few months, and both sides are seeing how far they can go.

"What each side is doing is sort of testing the waters, testing the other side in a calculated way, but escalating in a way to see how far they can go," she explained.

While the US assisted Israel in its defence against Iran's missile and drone strike at the weekend, it has said it will not participate in any retaliation, Ms Mortazavi added.

She said this was a "little more careful" approach, and shows the US was trying to handle "backchannel talks" between Iran and Israel.

"There's a lot of back channel diplomacy back and forth happening to try to minimise the damage to these retaliatory attacks," she added.

"But at the same time, both sides, Iranians and Israelis, are also doing this to save face for a more radical or more hardline constituency in each of their home countries."

Israeli missiles have targeted Syria's air defence positions, according to state media.

The defence systems were located in the south of Syria, the reports said.

Syrian state media quoted an unnamed military source as providing the information.

Sky News has not been able to verify the claims.

We've just been speaking with cabinet minister Mel Stride, and we started by asking for the government's reaction to the news of the apparent Israeli strike in Iran overnight.

He told Sky News that these are "unconfirmed reports" at this stage, although a US source told our partner network NBC News that it was indeed an Israeli strike.

But the senior Tory added: "The government's position is very clear, and that is that we accept that Israel has an absolute right to defend itself".

He noted that the UK helped defend Israel against an Iranian drone and missile attack on Saturday night.

"At the same time though, we do think that de-escalation is absolutely key now, and our message to all in the region, including Israel, is that de-escalation is really important," he added.

Mr Stride said Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron is in Italy at the G7 foreign ministers meeting, where it will be discussed in more detail.

Asked if the UK would back Israel's action, he said it is "hypothetical" at this stage, but added: "The overarching message on the military front is that de-escalation now is really important."

The minister refused to say if he would support further action by Israel, nor if there is a red line for the UK in its backing.

The focus needs to be on a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, getting more aid into Gaza, and getting the Israeli hostages out, he said.

Israel's national security minister has taken to X to write a one word post after the apparent Israeli strike on Iran.

Itamar Ben Gvir simply wrote: "Feeble."

Mr Gvir has led the far-right party Jewish Power since 2019, and was sworn into the cabinet last year.

He was later appointed the national security minister and handed control of Israel's Border Police division in the occupied West Bank.

He has previously said Israel's response to Iran's attack should not to be "wimpish".

"In order to establish deterrence in the Middle East, you must show them that you've gone berserk and completely lost it," he said.

As we continue to hear information about the apparent Israeli attack on Iran this morning, our  military analyst Michael Clarke  has been exploring what may have happened.

Iranian state media has said the country's defence system was fired and three drones were shot down over the central city of Isfahan - home to a nuclear site and a military airbase.

Clarke said Isfahan "would make sense" as a target because it is an "important" area, used by Iran as a nuclear research site.

"The fact that Isfahan is one of the cities that does quite a lot of nuclear work is also symbolically quite important, I think, if the Israelis are indicating that they're not frightened to go after these sites," he said.

There have also been reports of explosions in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz, which he said might also be important.

He said a lot of silos are located in the city, which are used to store ballistic missiles.

"If it is the case that both Isfahan and Tabriz have been attacked, it would look like the Israelis are going after certain targets that would be directly related to the attack last weekend when more than 300 drones and missiles were launched against Israel," he added.

Clarke added it is also "very unlikely" to be a drone attack because Isfahan is over 1,000 miles away from Israel.

"Nobody in their right minds would send drones a thousand miles to deliver a very small payload," he said.

Instead, he believes it is likely Jericho missiles have been used, which can carry a 1,000kg warhead.

There has been no damage to Iran's nuclear sites during this morning's alleged attack by Israel, the UN's nuclear watchdog has said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it is monitoring the situation "very closely" and calls for "extreme restraint".

Footage purporting to show blasts over Iran has started appearing on Telegram.

This clip was shared by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and appears to show blasts of light over Isfahan in central Iran.

A major military airbase is known to be situated in the city.

State media has said Iran fired its air defences after reports of explosions.

The Israel Defence Forces has declined to comment on reports of strikes.

Vessels in the Arabian Gulf and the Western Indian Ocean have been told to stay alert this morning, a British security firm has said.

Ambrey reported merchant vessels transiting the waters had been given a warning in case of increased activity from uncrewed aerial vehicles, more commonly known as drones, in the region.

The Arabian Gulf, also known as the Persian Gulf, lies between the Arabian Peninsula and southwestern Iran.

Some more details are coming through about Israel's apparent operation in Iran overnight.

A source familiar with the situation has described the operation as a strike.

Speaking to our US partner NBC News, they said Israel was currently assessing its effectiveness and the damage it has caused.

Today also marks the birthday of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Israeli military has declined to comment on the claims.

Iranian state media has reported air defence batteries had been fired in several provinces, with three drones destroyed over Isfahan, a city in central Iran.

So far, there have not been any reports of damage or casualties.
