Barbara Dickson, Cecil Sharp House review - intimate and beautifully paced | reviews, news & interviews

Barbara dickson, cecil sharp house review - intimate and beautifully paced, folk legend retraces the long and winding road.

barbara dickson tour 2022 review

Cecil Sharp House, citadel of folk music , finally resounded last night to the mellifluous tones of Barbara Dickson whose distinguished career began at the Howff Folk Club, Dunfermline, in the heady days of the 1960s folk revival. The choice of venue perhaps suggested an all-folk programme but while Dickson dug deep into her song bag the performance drew on numbers from across her remarkably varied career. While anyone hoping to hear her number one hit – “I Know Him So Well” – would have left disappointed, Ewan MacColl, whose favourite haunt it was, would have thought it all most inauthentic. Even though he himself was something of a construct!

Dickson, with Nick Holland on keyboards and backing vocals, offered a beautifully paced and intimate evening much enhanced by reminiscence and informed chat about each of the songs and their writers, several of whom – Gerry Rafferty, Willy Russell for example – have had deep connections to her. When Russell first heard Dickson in a Liverpool folk club, he recognised “a thoroughbred voice” and how right he was. She got her break in Russell’s own breakthrough musical, John, Paul, George, Ringo… and Bert , which arrived in the West End from the Liverpool Everyman in 1974, which was when I first heard her – a sixth form outing with an inspirational music teacher. Two years later, a residency on The Two Ronnies on Saturday evening prime time made her a household name. She’s not stopped since.

If her voice then was a light Beaujolais, it’s now a deep rich Rioja and at 75 it shows little sign of ageing – indeed, it has perhaps benefited from the downtime of Covid. It’s exquisitely controlled, notes perfectly placed, portamento always tasteful. It’s not simply that Dickson has a good voice – she’s also a good musician. The two don’t necessarily go together.

The 75 minute set included a selection of Dickson’s own songs, including “Where Shadows Meet the Light” about love and loss and letting go, and old chestnuts such as “Another Suitcase in Another Hall”, “Going Back” and “Tell Me It’s Not True”, the powerful closing number from Russell’s Blood Brothers , another musical forever associated with Dickson. Rafferty’s beautiful “Mary Skeffington” and “Family Tree” were sung with reverence, a reminder of how much more there was to him than “Baker Street”. Introducing “The Times They Are a-Changin’”, Dickson spoke of Bob Dylan as “the greatest living American”, noting that he’s still touring at 80. Of course, MacColl famously dismissed him as “a youth of mediocre talent”!

The more traditional elements of the evening couldn’t fail to impress: a setting of the 13th century Icelandic hymn “Heyr, Himna Smiður” made famous by Árstíðir Lífsins on YouTube, and “Willie Drowned in Yarrow”, one of a number of folk lyrics that Dickson has reworked. “MacCrimmon’s Lament”, Holland’s drone-like keyboard accompaniment suggesting the pipes, was a real standout. To hear her perform an all-traditional programme would be a real treat.

The evening’s opening act was Northern Irish singer-songwriter Anthony Toner, who joined Dickson for the final encore. His own short set included “The Road to Fivemiletown”, “Sailortown” and “An Alphabet”. His writing, the poignancy of which at times recalled the late Harry Chapin, made me want to explore further.

All in all, a very satisfying evening that drew a near-capacity crowd despite the Tube strike. And the veil of the folk temple wasn't rent in two!

Another Singer in Another Hall: Barbara Dickson is back

By Jay Darcy

Article Summary

Another Singer in Another Hall: Barbara Dickson is back

March marks two years since the coronavirus pandemic began. As things go back to normal, and we make up for lost time, acclaimed singer and actress Barbara Dickson OBE is blessing the UK with her ‘Time is Going Faster Tour’. Dickson will be performing both classic and more recent material from her extraordinary canon of music across both pop and folk, all with her exceptional band.

A multi-million selling recording artist, The Scotsman has described her as Scotland’s best-selling female singer in terms of the numbers of hit chart singles and albums she has achieved in the UK since 1976. Dickson is also known for her acting career: she is a twice Olivier-Award-winning actor, with roles including Viv Nicholson in Spend Spend Spend and (the original) Mrs. Johnstone in Willy Russell’s long-running musical Blood Brothers . On television, she starred as Anita Braithwaite in Band of Gold .

Emerging from the Scottish Folk Revival of the 1960s, Barbara Dickson became the biggest-selling Scottish female album artist of all time, earning 6 platinum, 11 gold and 7 silver albums.

One of Dickson’s best-known hits is ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’ from Evita . Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice spotted the then little-known Dickson and invited her to record the song for the musical’s concept album. A few years later, Willy Russell invited her to star in his new musical, Blood Brothers . Although at first reluctant to accept, having never acted before, she accepted and garnered critical acclaim. She has reprised the role many times, the latest being 2004 at the Liverpool Empire Theatre.

A couple of years later, Tim Rice approached her once again, this time asking her to take part in the recording of the concept album for the musical Chess – in the role of Svetlana. Dickson’s duet with elaine Paige, ‘I Know Him So Well’, became a worldwide hit, remained at number one in the UK Singles Chart for four weeks, and remains the best-selling ever female duet (according to Guinness World Records ).

Dickson’s other hits include ‘Answer Me’ and ‘The Caravan Song’. She enjoyed ten years of chart success as a pop star. So much was her contribution that she was awarded an OBE from Her Majesty The Queen in 2002 for Services to Music and Drama.

Dickson’s latest release was 2020’s ‘Time Is Going Faster’, which marked 50 years since her first solo album, ‘Do Right Woman’ (1970). Consisting of 10 new tracks, the album features three original songs written by Barbara herself, her first new writing in years. The album also features a new rendition of ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ from Blood Brothers .

Whilst there’s sadly no Manchester date on the tour, Dickson will be playing at King George’s Hall in Blackburn on 26th March. Other northern dates include St George’s Hall in Bradford on 2nd April and Liverpool Royal Philharmonic Hall on 15th April – the final date of the 23-date tour.

Review: Barbara Dickson at The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Home - Music Reviews - Review: Barbara Dickson at The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

barbara dickson tour 2022 review

Barbara Dickson, ended a 24-date tour at The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall paying homage to the city’s own playwright Willy Russell who was in the audience. For it was Russell’s play, John, Paul, George, Ring and Bert at the Liverpool Everyman in 1974 that started off her popular career.

From the play she sang Here Comes the Sun and added the wonderful Easy Terms, from another Russell musical, Blood Brothers. She got Willy to stand up to much acclaim from the home audience. It was a night of eclectic music choices, from her hits including a poignant Caravans, Another Suitcase, from Evita, and Answer Me, to pure folk, such as Mary Skeffington, The Times They are A’changin to The Water is Wide.

Barbara’s voice is a pure as ever though at the end of a 24 date tour the odd strain could be detected. But she is nothing if not a trouper and gave it her all. She sang many songs from her latest album, Winter, which includes Advent and Christmas music supplemented with secular music including the slow and mellow Winters Come, a Gerry Rafferty track and Winter Song, written by Alan Hull of Lindisfarne, a song that she has known for a very long time and now been able to record for her fans.

She even included a beautiful mellow song, Silence of the Dawn, by Benny Andersson, written for the millennium. As she said: “We got the 02, the Swedes got a wonderful song!”

She was backed by the multi-talented Troy Donockley on the wonderful uilleann pipes and electric guitar, Nick Holland on keyboard and vocals, bass player and vocals Brad Lang and on drums and percussion Russell Field. They are a tight little band and play a mixture of electro folk and pure gaelic tunes.

Of note was the haunting MacCrimmons Lament that reached into the very souls of the audience that then morphed into a seven part jig that got the auditorium bopping in their seats. As she said, it’s not only the Scots that like Scottish music, and she was right.

It was another night of triumph for Barbara who said it was wonderful to finish her tour amongst her beloved Scousers. After all, it was here in Liverpool where it all began.

Barbara Ruth Dickson is no stranger to the world of music; in fact, in 2002 she was awarded an order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to music and drama. The actress, singer and songwriter has been making music for decades and has had the opportunity to perfect her live performances, rivaled by only those who have come before her.

Having been around for such a long time means accumulating a large following, of all people of all ages; a fact that becomes extremely apparent when you have the opportunity to watch her live show. As the audience starts to settle down, you can feel the buzz of anticipation until the band starts to play the introduction to the first song. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her, and as she starts to sing you become completely entranced by her voice. There have been occaisions when she was joined by a special guest, like Elaine Paige, who joined her in the song “I Know Him So Well.” Despite her widespread success, she seems to remain extremely humble and constantly thanks her fans for their cheers and support. She really knows how to play the crowd and gives the performance of her life every single time.

The Platform at Morecambe Sept 23rd 2017. Another chance to see Barbara and I am so glad we did. Despite having difficulties with her voice (her words, not mine) she took us on a musical tour of her career punctuated with songs from Dylan, Rafferty, Russell and even a new song penned by 'Her Royal Highness' herself. Great work Barbara. My absolute favourites are of course your folk songs delivered with such raw emotion you can take us to Scottish Isles where nature and music are in its purest form. If last night was 'you having difficulties with your voice', what chance do any of us have when singing at our best? Non whatsoever, you are a true performer at (what I consider to be)the prime of your career. I also want to say thank you to Nick Holland and Anthony Toney who combined to give us a very special evening. Even if you experienced tech. issues. You all did a great job.

Thanks again till next time.

Brilliant concert at Birmingham Town Hall.Barbara and the band played a mixture of old songs and Scottish Folk along with 4 tracks from her new EP. Barbara has not lost her charm on stage and her voice is still one of the most beautiful when singing live.

One of the best concerts around, go see her live, you will not be disappointed.

My sister and I always loved Barabara's music. We bought all her CDs and went to all her concerts when appearing in our home town of Brighton. Haven't heard much recently of any tours but would like to go to some soon. Wonderful artist.

What a great show for the opening night of her tour, even though she was struggling with a throat infection. Even took time to meet fans after the show. Thank you so much, it made my inlaws and partners night

Emerging from the Scottish folk revival of the 1960's, Barbara Dickson became the biggest selling Scottish female album artist of all time - earning six platinum, 11 gold and seven silver albums. Known to a wider audience in the 1970's and 1980's with hits including ‘Answer Me’, ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, ‘The Caravan Song’ and ‘I Know Him So Well’, she enjoyed ten years of chart success as a pop star.

After a musical odyssey of 50 years creating music, playing guitar and piano, acting, and songwriting, this show is a culmination of her journey thus far - an evening packed with songs from one of the finest voices you will ever hear.
