Kuljinder Bahia (b. 1973) is the owner and managing director of Southall Travel, which he is credited with turning into a multi-million pound business.

Born in the Punjab, Kuljinder moved with his family to London where he was educated at the Indian public school, Bishops Cotton. In 1997 he took over the running of the family business, Southall Travel, and transformed the business model from a company mainly selling flights to the sub-continent for visiting friends and relatives to one of the most innovative, fastest growing and forward-looking of travel companies. By using his own technology, having a clear niche in the market, excelling in customer service by phone and keeping a tight control of the cost base, Kuljinder branched out into the mainstream worldwide travel sector, business travel and luxury tour operating.

In 2007, Kuljinder launched business-to-business arm The Holiday Team to give travel agents access to its value air-fares through its own tailor-made online booking system, and the business has gone from strength to strength. In 2012 Southall Travel was on the Sunday Times Top Track 250 list of the UK's most successful mid-market private companies for the third year running, ranking at 132 on the list alongside brands such as Selfridges, Aston Martin and Warburtons. Today Southall Travel employs more than 850 people globally across its leisure, wholesale and business travel divisions. In 2013, Southall launched its own website, Travel Trolley. Now headquartered in Buckinghamshire, in 2012-13 Southall Travel’s parent company, Onkar International, made £14.8m profit on £283.3m of sales.

In 2008 he was honoured by the British Travel & Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2013.

Travel firms could be breaking law by charging customers to claim refunds for cancellations

Travel firms accused of taking advantage of customers during the lockdown

  • Updated 09:24, 23 Apr 2020

The pandemic has produced “unique complexity and hardship for both the travelling public and travel businesses alike”, one travel firm told me this week.

I don’t doubt it, but I’m not sure that justifies the way some customers are being treated.

Take Yusuf Ali and eight family members from London, who were due to fly to America, having booked through travel agent Travel Trolley.

Yusuf asked for their money back when the flight was cancelled due to coronavirus .

He was offered either a voucher or refund of £1,868, which is £450 less than the amount the family paid.

Travel Trolley is part of the giant Southall Travel , which is owned by tycoon Kuljinder Bahia, and last financial year it paid its shareholders a £34million dividend.

A spokesman told me that it follows the instructions of its airline partners and offers either vouchers or “a full refund” subject to a £75 per person fee, which it has reduced to £50 per person.

So, not a full refund then.

It says this fee is to cover expenses in processing refunds. If that’s the case, shouldn’t the fee be per booking, and not per passenger?

There were nine people in Yusuf’s party but only three bookings, so only three refunds needed to be processed.

“We paid with money and expect the same back,” said Yusuf.

A similar problem was faced by Karolina Wesolowska and Bertrand Houchot.

They booked a flight from Manchester to Bergen, Norway, with Wizz Air and have been refunded in full.

But they’ve struggled to get a refund for the return flight to Manchester booked through GoToGate with Scandinavian Airlines SAS.

GoToGate said it would charge £30 per person as a refund fee. Since both tickets only came to £87, that would leave the couple getting just £27 back.

“Each time I tried to call I was disconnected or the queuing time would increase every 10 minutes after already waiting 50 minutes,” said Karolina.

“We feel that they are using this difficult time to take advantage of their customers.”

I approached GoToGate, which apologised for the delays in getting through, adding that the refund fee would now be a total of 30 euros rather than £60.

Karolina isn’t impressed: “We are not happy to pay anything for a refund that is due to us.”

In another case, Corinne Frankland struggled to get her money back after booking a parking space at Newcastle Airport – plus two other bookings she inadvertently made.

It’s an easy mistake to make, thinking your attempt at an online booking has failed, so you book again.

The result was that Corinne ended up being charged £170 for three separate parking requests.

Then her flight to Tenerife was cancelled because of the pandemic, meaning that she didn’t want any of them.

When she asked for a refund, parking firm Holiday Extras initially agreed, then said she could only have vouchers.

“I rarely go abroad and was offered vouchers for airport parking that I will never use,” said Corinne, from Houghton Le Spring, Tyne and Wear.

“I’ve been put on furlough from work and every penny counts.”

I’m pleased to say that after I contacted Holiday Extras she was refunded in cash.

Consumer watchdogs have questioned the legality of travel companies charging fees to process refunds.

“The only time it may be reasonable to charge such a refund fee is where the passenger cancelled their travel plans before their travel was restricted or before the airline cancelled themselves,” says the UK European Consumer Centre , hosted by the Trading Standards Institute.

“We do know that some airlines are offering vouchers and that passengers are encouraged where appropriate to accept such a solution as a compromise, but this is not mandatory unless emergency legislation has been implemented in that particular country.”

It urged patience to allow businesses to deal with queries and suggested alternatively trying your travel insurer or credit card provider for refunds, if the flights cost more than £100.

This type of vacation rental cancellation is on the rise. Are you next?

A few days before flying to Bali, Indonesia, I received an unexpected email from Airbnb: My host had sold my vacation home.

"We’re reaching out with the unfortunate news that your reservation was canceled," it said. "Your refund is on its way."

But wait – I didn't want my money back. I needed a place to stay while I was in Indonesia. Airbnb assured me I had nothing to worry about. It would find a new rental and cover my extra expenses. But, as always, some restrictions applied.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

Sales cancellations are on the rise

Selling a vacation rental out from under a guest is becoming a big problem, insiders said. There are no statistics on the number of vacation rentals with active reservations that are currently for sale. But Justin Gordon, who runs the rental price comparison site HiChee , says more hosts are putting their rentals on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo while they wait to sell their properties. He's seen the disruption it causes guests who are about to leave for vacation.

"I felt so sorry for the guests," he said.

Did I mention the Indonesia rental? That wasn't my first cancellation. I rented a condo in Oahu, Hawaii, a few years ago through Vrbo. A week before I checked in, I got an email saying my stay had been canceled because the property was sold.

"Many homeowners are investors, buying properties low and selling high or holding them for a set number of years as a part of their financial strategy," explained Matthew Deal, managing director of Element Vacation Homes , a central Florida vacation rental company.

A cancellation can have consequences for the seller. For example, if you list your home on Vrbo, you might have to pay the platform a cancellation fee, which gets higher as your arrival day approaches.

"In addition to financial penalties, repeat offenders may see limited search visibility on the Vrbo app and site, temporary suspension, or revocation of their Premier Host status," said spokesperson Nola Lu.

Airbnb has similar restrictions. "We expect Hosts to honor accepted reservations," said spokesperson Aaron Swor.

What are your rights when your vacation rental is sold?

If your vacation rental is sold before you arrive, you have some rights – though not as many as you'd assume.

  • For rentals booked directly through the owner, your rental contract will outline your right to a refund. If you're dealing with a host who has only one rental or can't accommodate you at a different property, you'll get a full refund, but you'll have to start over and find a new vacation rental. Pro tip: Use a credit card to book. If the owner flakes out and tries to keep your money, you can always dispute the charges.
  • For rentals booked through a popular vacation rental platform like Airbnb or Vrbo, the platform will offer a full refund or or accommodate you at a different rental property. If there's a price difference – and there usually is – then the platform may offer to cover the extra cost.
  • If you booked through a property management company, your rights may not be spelled out in your contract, but chances are the company will have a plan "B" ready. For example, Element Vacation Rentals has a policy to promptly present multiple options to displaced guests, including comparable properties from its portfolio and those of its competitors. Ask about the policy before you make a reservation.

At least, that is what's supposed to happen if there's a cancellation. But let's talk about what actually does happen.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

Flying cars are coming! Here's how they could change the way you travel.

What if an owner sells a vacation rental?

When an owner sells your vacation rental from under you, you'll probably feel confused and upset. And even as you're processing the loss of your rental, your host may ask you for a favor.

When the owners of Gerri Detweiler's Airbnb rental sold their place, her host asked her to cancel the rental. The reason? The host didn't want to incur a fee from Airbnb. So Detweiler, a personal finance expert from Sarasota, Florida, canceled the stay.

"I didn't bother booking another rental with Airbnb," she said.

For both of my cancellations, I had no choice. I was only days away from checking in.

To their credit, both Airbnb and Vrbo helped me. Vrbo found a new rental in Hawaii and covered the price difference. Airbnb offered a coupon and sent me a few options for a replacement rental in Bali. The only one available on such short notice was thousands of dollars more than my original rental, so Airbnb increased the amount of the coupon to cover the extra cost.

The difference between the platforms was in their approach to the situation. Vrbo transferred me to a special team that took care of everything quickly. With Airbnb, it felt like more of a negotiation. But in the end, I was grateful to have the protection of both vacation rental platforms.

'Flying feels different': Here's how air travel has changed recently

Air travel smells worse than ever. Here's how to fix it.

This could happen to you

This isn't an abstract issue. Two of this year's hottest housing markets – Orlando and Tampa, Florida – are popular with vacation renters and likely to have lots of homes that are also on the market.

But that's not the real problem. It's that most vacation rental customers don't know their rights when they rent. They either assume they have no choice but to take the refund and that they're on their own. Or they believe the vacation rental company must find them a comparable rental and cover any price difference.

But you're not on your own unless you rented directly through an individual – and even then, the previous owner may be able to refer you to another rental. And your vacation rental platform won't automatically find you a new place and pay for it. You may have to negotiate.

The best solution is disclosure. Vacation rental owners should tell you if their property is for sale. Then you can make an informed decision about whether you still want to rent the place – and take your chances.

Elliott's tips for avoiding a vacation rental cancellation

Getting surprised by a vacation rental sale is preventable. Here are a few strategies:

  • Talk to the owner : Before you rent a vacation home, ask if the place is for sale. If it is, ask what would happen if the unit were to be sold. If it's sold, talk to the new owners," said hospitality consultant Steve Turk. "See if they'll honor your reservation."
  • Read the reviews – all of them : If you're renting on a popular platform, don't just skim the reviews. Read them. Sometimes, hosts will stop caring about their rental unit if they know they're going to sell. "Check to see if recent guests have posted any negative reviews," advised Pete Evering, a business development manager at Utopia Property Management , a rental management company.
  • Do your research : If you have the address of the rental, run a quick online search. If it shows up on Zillow or Realtor.com , you know you have a problem. Gordon from HiChee is considering developing technology that would notify travelers in case their booked rental shows up for sale on the internet.

Poor customer should be their real name

Rip off should be their real name. This company sells you a cheap ticket with horrible schedules or with crappy flight I:e short connections etc. When you find out they charge extra. So basically lack of professionalism with intention to rip you off.

They just dont like paying you back!!!

Booked a ticket for my grandma who could no longer travel. Requested Travel trolley to cancel the ticket well in advance and agreed to the cancellation charges (which in itself are ridiculous). Despite numerous Email and phone calls I have still not received the refund. Most likely due to incompetency than anything. If you do decide to help then my invoice number is 4942403. Edit: they refunded me Eventually. It needed my confirmation which I already gave twice on email but I guess they may have missed it. All's well that ends well.

Date of experience : 05 July 2023

Dear Raheeb, Thank you for sharing the booking reference. Travel Trolley requests that you respond to the last email received on the registered email ID. We assure you that you will receive any due amount from our side, if applicable. Kind Regards, Travel Trolley

Cancelled booking for no reason

Made a booking and it was cancelled for no reason. All prices ended up going higher so I had to pay more for my flight. Customer service was helpful so not blaming them, but really bad from the company to advertise tickets and then tell you they are not available. Really, really unacceptable.

The initial email i received to confirm…

The initial email i received to confirm my booking did not have the e-ticket or invoice so called up to request it. I did not have to wait long at all to be answered and found Kunal to be helpful, he solved my issue there and then. Will seek to increase the overall experience after my trip experience.

Travel Trolley

I have used Travel Trolley several times like Feb 2024 this week March 2024 but I made a mistake this week on tickets this week but was charged £300 to cancel has a loyal customer this is wrong.

Date of experience : 28 March 2024

Dear Customer, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We're sorry to hear about your recent experience with the cancellation charges. As a valued and loyal customer, we ensure every step taken is to maximize your satisfaction. I had the wrong details on my ticket…

I had the wrong details on my ticket picked up when I checked in. I called TT who advised I only had 3 hrs prior to flight to make changes even though I called within this timeframe. I was told the flight was fully booked and I couldn't book another flight on that plane, even though one of the seats were mine. I was quoted £200+ for a later flight, even though online it was £141.00. The customer service was poor and I am sure more could have been done to resolve the problem apart from offering to purchase another overpriced ticket as I was only travelling from Manchester to Heathrow. Travelling is very stressful and I found the response rather cold and unhelpful.

Date of experience : 08 April 2024

Dear Lavern , We are disheartened to hear of your feedback and we regret that we could not meet your expectations. Our records indicate that you requested a specific change to your booking a few hours before the scheduled departure. Unfortunately, the requested change was not permissible at that time. As a travel agency, we are obliged to adhere to the airline's policy. Regarding the price difference you witnessed, the fare difference fructifies rapidly due to demand and availability. We appreciate your understanding on the same. Once again, we apologies for the inconvenience you faced and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further issues or concerns. Kind Regards, Travel Trolley

Tickets bought on the website shows…

Tickets bought on the website shows cheaper but when need to change the class of travel or date the staff on phone call charges customer almost double the price of the airlines. Customer care put the customer call on hold for four minutes by saying they need to check with the airlines, but they do not and add whatever amount they wish to increase and inform the customer. This has been happening with online bookings so suggest never to change the ticket once booked online.

Date of experience : 23 March 2024

Dear Glenn, Travel Trolley invites you to write to us with your booking reference so that we can better understand the sequence of events. We would like to mention that after the issuance of the ticket, we are obliged to follow the guidelines set by the airline for any changes or cancellations. Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. Our aim is to serve you better and we hope we will get another opportunity to meet your travel needs. Regards, Travel Trolley

Difficult experience at the airport turned around by great customer service

Firstly I booked with Traveltrolley due to their low fares. Secondly the purpose of this feedback is due to the fantastic help and support provided by Danny. Without going technical, we had some issues affecting our tickets. As a result it meant we had to change 2 out of 5 tickets. (If you have a visa on a old passport, just take them with you!l After explaining our difficult circumstances, Danny made sure he listened, understood, was knowledgeable, attentive, quick, efficient, caring, and most importantly put us first, amazing customer service! It's really hard to find colleagues that care, and show that much enthusiasm. Danny certainly went above and beyond his normal duties. I did not want these efforts to go unnoticed. This meant less stress, and what more could you ask for. Once again, thank you Danny for your help and support. The rest of the team Rita, and Spencer, apologies if i have missed any of you out, all of you play an equal role in this feedback. Good to know you have human on the other line, not a robot. My words can not express/justify how great this experience has been. We can't wait to do more business with you in the near future. Thank you sincerely 🙏

Date of experience : 20 March 2024

Dear Our Valued Customer, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your positive experience with us! We feel delighted that our team, especially Danny, was able to assist you to your satisfaction. Your kind words have boosted our spirits and we assure you that we will continue to maintain and improve our high standards of customer service. We understand that travel plans can sometimes be complex and arise unexpected issues, but rest assured that we are always here to navigate you through them as seamlessly as possible. We're particularly grateful that you highlighted the human touch in our services - it's paramount for us that we present not just an efficient service, but one that's personal, empathetic and genuine. We'll ensure your compliments are passed onto Danny, Rita, Spencer and the rest of our team. We believe that every member's contribution is crucial to providing the best service possible, and your feedback will surely motivate them even further. Thank you once again for your kind words. We look forward to assisting you with your future travel arrangements and providing the same positive experience. Regards, Travel Trolley

The past on wheels: Moscow's old public transport (PHOTOS)

Moscow a 1954 MTB-82 trolleybus.

Moscow a 1954 MTB-82 trolleybus.

‘F’

travel trolley owner

Electric trams appeared in Moscow in 1899, but the most popular of the first models was created in 1908. It was the model ‘F’ (‘Fonarny’, “The one with a lantern”), a motor carriage produced in St. Petersburg. The name comes from a special build-up with glass units on the roof. It served to let additional light from the street inside the carriage and was commonly called a ‘lantern’. The chassis of the ‘F’ was wooden with a steel coating. The carriage had no doors and passengers often hopped on and off while it was going through turns at minimum speed. The ‘F’ also operated with a motor engine with several attached modifications and was only taken out of service in Moscow in the 1950s.

‘RVZ-6’

travel trolley owner

The ‘RVZ-6’ was a special case: This successful model had spread all over the USSR and was in use for decades, but it was still considered really exotic in Moscow. The reason was that the capital had chosen the ‘Tatra’ trams (see below) instead of this one. The ‘RVZ-6’ was designed in Riga in the Soviet Republic of Latvia. From 1960, its mass production had continued for practically 30 years - the Latvian engineers did everything to update the construction. The ‘RVZ-6’ had a light body made of aluminium sheets riveted together. Also, it had a driving system with pedals, which was quite unusual for trams. As Moscow underestimated this model, it was only used there in 1960-1966 and then, all eight carriages were given to Tashkent in the Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan.

‘Tatra T2’

travel trolley owner

The ‘Tatra’ tram was inspired by a U.S. model and produced from the 1950s in Czechoslovakia under a license. A modified ‘Tatra T2’ first appeared in Moscow in 1959. It was the beginning of a new era in the history of Moscow trams. It was much more convenient than any other Soviet model: the driver had a comfortable seat and the carriage was equipped with resilient wheels, instead of full-metal ones - the ‘Tatra T2’ passed through the streets without making a loud noise. All the carriages of this modification also had an improved winter heating system. On top of that, the recognizable design of the model didn’t resemble any other trams. The ‘Tatra T2’ was taken out of service in 1981 and replaced by the next generation - the ‘Tatra T3’, which wasn’t less successful.

‘AMO-4’

travel trolley owner

The first buses that appeared in Moscow in 1922-1924 were imported from England, but Soviet engineers quickly designed a local model. This was the ‘AMO-4’, named after the AMO plant (“Automobile Society of Moscow”). The name of the model also actually stands for bus chassis and had two body modifications. The second had a fourth door at the back, so it could be turned into an ambulance. The chassis was improved, too: It was made of boards instead of beams and became more flexible, so the bumpy Moscow pavings didn’t wear it out too fast.

‘ZIS-8’

travel trolley owner

In the 1930s, the AMO plant was renamed in honor of Iosif Stalin, so its new common abbreviation was ZIS (‘Zavod imeni Stalina’, “Plant named after Stalin”). After this, engineers designed a new bus called ‘ZIS-8’. It was based on an American bus model, which was significantly altered: the construction was made simpler and the front brakes were made more reliable. Like the ‘AMO-4’, the ‘ZIS-8’ had a small window to display the route number above the windscreen. At the sides of the window there were two lamps showing the color code of the route to make it recognizable from a distance - an idea borrowed from the tram system. The ‘ZIS-8’ had turned out to be convenient and easy to produce, so it was used in other cities of the USSR and even made for export. ZIS then began to design many bus modifications.

‘LiAZ-677’

travel trolley owner

One of the next greatest hits among Moscow buses was first designed in 1962 at a plant in Likino-Dulyovo, Moscow Region. It was called ‘LiAZ-677’ and was actually used all over the USSR. Appearing in 1967 in Moscow for the first time, the ‘LiAZ-677’ was in operation until the 2000s. This bus had a flexible suspended span based on pneumo cylinders, so people started calling the ‘LiAZ-677’ a ‘lunokhod’ (“lunar rover”). The motor was placed in the front part of the chassis and the exhaust gas pipe went under the floor - this construction solution also heated the compartment. However, as this system got old, it started filling the bus with the smell of the exhaust gas. The ‘LiAZ-677’ is also remembered for its shaky motion and specific sound of its worn parts, which resembled the tinkling of empty bottles.

‘Ikarus-180’

travel trolley owner

The ‘Ikarus’ buses from Hungary were very popular in the USSR. They started appearing at the end of the 1960s, but only the biggest models were operating in Moscow. One of them was the ‘Ikarus-180’ - the first stretch bus in the Soviet Union. It just had 37 seats, but could carry 169 passengers in total, thanks to its two-section construction. The center of the ‘Ikarus-180’ made the Soviets nickname this model ‘garmoshka’ (“accordion”) or a “vacuum cleaner”. Also, its diesel engine was a sensation on the back of other Soviet buses that had petrol fuel-hungry motors. Later, the ‘Ikarus-180’ became the basis for the improved ‘Ikarus-280’ model.

Trolleybuses

‘lk’.

travel trolley owner

Moscow saw its first trolleybuses in 1933. The model was called ‘LK’ after Lazar Kaganovich, who was the man behind the idea to equip Moscow with electric transport. The first trolleybuse of the capital had a wooden chassis covered with metal. It had two doors that opened manually by the driver and the bus conductor. The ‘LK’ was comfortable for passengers: there were padded seats with heaters and baggage nets. At the same time, the driver’s cab had no heater and the wooden chassis made terrible creaks during motion. In any case, this new type of transport gained a lot of popularity over the years.

‘YaTB-3’

travel trolley owner

Appearing in 1939, the ‘YaTB-3’ was the most unusual of Moscow’s trolleybus models, as it was a double-decker. It was the Soviet equivalent of an English model bought for the capital of the USSR in 1937. It fit 100 people inside, but wasn’t easy to operate. All trolleybus cables had to be raised a meter higher and the trolley poles (power collectors) of the usual models often lowered. The ‘YaTB-3’ was uncomfortable for tall passengers, because the ceilings of both decks were very low. Also, it was only possible to ride the second deck sitting down - extra standing passengers could alter the center of gravity, which threatened the steadiness of the bus. The number of these trolleybuses slowly declined until 1953, when they were finally taken out of service for good.

‘MTB-82’

travel trolley owner

The ‘MTB-82’ first appeared in Moscow in 1946. It was quite different from previous models. For example, it had a universal chassis that could be used as a trolleybus, tram or bus. Its chassis was made of aluminium and covered with the same metal, so it didn’t make any creaks and was considerably lighter in weight. The doors didn’t have to be opened manually, as they had the pneumatic drive. Additionally, all the parts could be repaired easily. The ‘MTB-82’ could carry 100 people like the ‘YaTB-3’ and it also had problems with its size: it was wider than all the other trolleybuses, so the drivers often hit passing vehicles and lampposts. This is why the production of the ‘MTB-82’ was eventually stopped in 1961, but it was in operation until 1972, when it finally was taken out of service. In fact, nowadays, any trolleybus is a part of history - in 2020, Moscow stopped using this type of public transport and, in September of that year, a museum route was opened.
