San Andres is located at a distance of almost 124 miles (200 km) from the Nicaraguan coast and around 444 miles (715 km) from the mainland. If you want to get to the island, the only way is to fly, as boats do not provide services on the long route.

There are non-direct flights offered in some seasons with layovers in Panama or Bogota.

10 Best Things To Do in San Andres, Colombia

Island hopping is one of the most popular tourist activities on an island or beach destination. San Andres is home to some of the most remarkably charming coastal areas, sand bars, and cays.

There are multiple island hopping tours from San Andres that you can opt for to see beautiful coral reefs, cays, and sandy beaches:

  • Full Day Private Boat Charter in San Andrés Bay
  • Full Day Marine Tour in San Andres
  • Bahia Tour, Snorkeling, and Bathing Stops in San Andres Islands

Depending on the length of your stay, there is a lot you can see and do in San Andres in addition to island hopping. Here are the 10 best activities you can consider when visiting San Andres.

1. Explore the Johnny Cay Natural Regional Park

San Andres Island bay. Johnny Cay Stock

The Johnny Cay Natural Regional Park is one of the biggest tourist attractions in San Andres. Johnny Cay is a beautiful tropical island that you can access from Spratt Bight, the main beach in San Andres.

The island is beautiful, with pristine blue water, soft white sandy beaches, and tall coconut palm trees. A trip to the Regional Park will cost you around 15,000 Colombian Pesos (COP) or $3.37.\

2. Tour El Acuario and Haynes Cay

El Acuario and Haynes Cay are two tiny isles located on the eastern coast of San Andres, also accessible from Spratt Bight via boat. While they are included in island hopping tours, you can also go there by yourself if you prefer.

There are beautiful coral reefs in the vicinity, so the place is great for snorkeling and swimming. El Acuario is popularly known as a sandbar island with pristine water on all sides. It also has a few bars and restaurants.

Haynes Cay, slightly larger, is just 328 feet (100 meters) ahead of El Acuario, and if you want to hop from one island to the next, you can just wade through the water. Unlike El Acuario, Haynes has some plantations in the form of palm trees and vegetation.

3. Explore the Botanical Garden

The Jardin Botanico de San Andres, or the botanical gardens, are located north of San Luis on a road that leads to La Loma. The garden is home to numerous plant species from the Caribbean region.

You can also get a panoramic view of San Andres Island from a certain viewpoint. The ticket price is 7,000 COP ($1.59) if you are a local. However, the entrance ticket will cost you 10,000 COP ($2.27) if you are a foreigner.

4. Take a Trip to Cueva de Morgan

Cueva de Morgan in San Andres Colombia Stock

Next activity on our list of recommendations is the Cueva de Morgan or Morgan’s Cave. A trip to this cave and amusement park is highly recommended if you are traveling with family and have small kids. You will find a replica of a ship and characters dressed up in pirate costumes. The entrance ticket for one person will cost you 15,000 COP ($3.37).

5. Go Scuba Diving

As one of the world’s most popular scuba diving destinations , we highly recommend trying the activity if you love water-based adventure. San Andres features many great diving sites, beautiful marine life, and vibrant coral reefs. In some sites, the visibility goes as deep as 115 feet (35 m).

It is a great place to explore the waters or get your scuba diving license. The rates are reasonable as you can do your PADI Discover Scuba Diving (PADI DSD) course for around 270,000 COP ($60).

If you already have a diving license, you can enjoy browsing through plenty of shops along the west coast and within the town.

6. See The Sea of Seven Colors

The Sea of the Seven Colors, San Andres Island, Colombia Stock

You may have gotten a glimpse of the beautiful ocean hues while flying to San Andres. If not, you can take a boat tour around the island to see the changing shades of the water ranging from blue to green, with shades emanating from the coral reefs under the water.

San Andres is surrounded by shallow coral waters with beautiful colors that are more visible on the eastern and northern sides. The sight is rare and not to be missed, as not many places can boast of having a sea of seven colors.

7. Go Parasailing

Another water-based activity that many tourists like to do is parasailing . You will find plenty of action along the east coast at reasonable prices, as one stint will cost you around 290,000 COP ($65.23). Try it if you like an adventure.

You might just see the sea of seven colors from the top.

8. Explore the San Andres Mangrove Reserve

The Parque Nacional Manglares, or the Mangrove Reserve in San Andres, is in the South of the main town area. You can take a guided kayak trip to explore the mangrove reserve in detail. You can easily view the entrance to the reserve from the road.

You will find it on your right if you are driving to the town from San Luis.

9. Check Out the El Hoyo Soplador

The El Hoyo Soplador is a small blowhole located on the southern shore of the area and a popular tourist attraction. The hole may be small but goes up into the sky when the water explodes.

If you want to witness the sight, visit when it is high tide. The place can also get crowded during rush hours, and you may have to wait to get your turn to stand above the hole.

The place also features small cafes and a restaurant.

10. Enjoy Parque West View

While the eastern coast features some amazing beaches, the west coast is also known for its tranquil waters. So, if you plan to explore that side, take a detour to the Eco Parque West View. Its beautiful pristine water is perfect for swimming and jumping.

The entrance to the West View is for 4,000 COP ($0.90) per person.

16 Awesome Things to Do on San Andres Island (Colombia)

T he tiny island of San Andres is a lesser known island escape destination. Located in the southwestern Caribbean, the island belongs to Colombia despite the fact it is actually closer to the coast of Nicaragua .

Part of an archipelago with the smaller islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina, the waters around San Andrés are a UNESCO Biosphere known as the Seaflower Biosphere. They house an amazing amount of biodiversity, and there is a large barrier reef nearby. The beautiful waters surrounding the islands are often referred to as the “Sea of 7 Colors” due to the vibrant shades of blues and greens you can see (pro tip: try to get a window seat on your flight in to count the colors yourself!).

Although San Andrés isn’t as well known as other Caribbean destinations like the Bahamas or Dominican Republic or other Colombian destinations like Bogota or Cartagena and Medellín, it’s completely worth a visit. It makes for an especially good addition to any Colombia trip for a few days of relaxing and soaking in the sun.

Learn more about the surprising number of things to do on this tiny island, including some tips on where and what to eat and where to stay in this guide to San Andrés, Colombia.

Things to Do on San Andrés

The island of San Andrés only has an area of just over 10 square miles, but there is actually quite a bit to do. Here are some of the highlights and best things to do in San Andrés.

1. Visit Johnny Cay

This is without a doubt the most popular day or half day trip from San Andrés. Johnny Cay is a tiny palm covered island just a short half hour boat ride away. There is a gorgeous beach where you can swim in the crystal clear waters.

You’ll also want to make sure you enjoy a Coco Loco, a favorite local cocktail that is sort of like a piña colada but minus the pineapple and with both rum and whiskey! Very loco indeed, but also very tasty, and always served in a fresh coconut.

You can get tour boats to Johnny Cay at many agencies in the downtown area of San Andrés, known as the North End or even from the main beach front downtown. There are both full and half day tours to the island, some of which include lunch, and some that do not.

Check reviews and prices for the best Johnny Cay and Mangroves Tours

2. Go Snorkeling in the Aquarium

The San Andrés Aquarium, or Acuario de San Andrés, is a natural aquarium located just a short distance off San Andrés. There is a natural reef here, and you can see lots of colorful fish swimming in the water.

Tour agencies in San Andrés offer tours here. Many also include tours of the mangroves and nearby bay, and some also include Johnny Cay.

If you have time during your visit, you can wade over to nearby Haynes Cay island where there are some little beach bars and restaurants and neat views of San Andrés. There is also a gorgeous little beach just off the aquarium.

Check reviews and prices for the best Snorkel Tours in San Andres

3. Hang Out on Spratt Bight

One of the nicest things about San Andres Island is the beach in the downtown area is actually very nice. Known as Spratt Bight, it’s a long stretch of beach with white sand and calm waters. It’s perfect for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying another C oco Loco or three. This is also the area where you’ll find many of the best San Andrés Island hotels .

While the area right in the heart of downtown can get a little bit crowded, if you walk down far enough, you can find plenty of peace and quiet. There are also some gorgeous views of Johnny Cay in the distance!

Check reviews and prices for the best Private Boat Tour of the San Andres Islands

4. Rent a Golf Cart or Scooter Bike and Explore the Rest of the Island

This is absolutely a must do in San Andrés!

Because the island is so small, it is easily explored in a day. There are many rental agencies all around the North End that rent golf carts for 2-6 people as well as scooter bikes. It’s best to rent early so you have your pick of the best carts and bikes and can take full advantage of the day.

There is a road that circles the island. Outside of the downtown area, it has mostly light traffic. Still, you’ll want to watch out for motorcycles that often weave between traffic across lanes.

There are a number of great stops you can make while on your circuit of the island. The next few things to do in San Andrés are all good inclusions.

Check reviews and prices for the best Golf Cart rentals

5. Take in the Views from the Steeple of the First Baptist Church

One of the lesser known things to do in San Andrés is to visit the First Baptist Church. This church is located in the interior of the island, in the community known as La Loma.

For a small donation, you can climb up into the church’s steeple and take in incredible views of the Caribbean Sea off the coast. This is the highest point on the island, and makes for a good first stop when leaving downtown for your golf cart circuit of San Andrés Island.

Check reviews and prices for the best San Andrés Island Private Sightseeing Tours

6. Hang Out with Caimans at the Laguna Big Pond

This is perhaps the quirkiest thing to do in San Andrés. This large freshwater pond in the center of the island was historically very important to the island’s residents as one of the only sources of fresh water.

A number of years back, the Colombian Coast Guard confiscated a number of caimans that were being smuggled illegally. They released them into this pond, where they have multiplied and become semi-domesticated. They will even come when called and let you pet them!

If you stop here, you can hire a local guide for a small fee who will tell you a bit about the island’s and the pond’s history and lure the caimans over with some chicken. Petting them is optional, of course.

Check reviews and prices for the best San Andres tours

7. See Where Pirate Captain Henry Morgan Stashed Treasure

Near Big Pond, there is a cave that according to legend Captain Henry Morgan used to stash treasure on several occasions. San Andrés was frequented by pirates in the 1600s, none more than Morgan, who often used it as a base of operations.

If you stop here, you can see some neat pirate artifacts and the cave that Morgan supposedly used.

8. Swim with Fish in La Piscinita

On the western coast of the island, you’ll find La Piscinita, a natural swimming pool carved into the rocky coast of this side of the island like a little cove. You can go for a refreshing swim here and even see fish swimming around you in the clear waters.

9. Get Sprayed at the Hoyo Soplador

At the southern tip of San Andrés, you’ll find a can’t miss attraction. Waves crash into underground caverns here and when they come in forcefully enough come crashing up through a small hole in the ground, making a blowhole.

It’s absolutely hilarious to get sprayed, and the force of the wind coming up is quite strong! Locals will take your photo and it’s customary to either buy a drink from them or give them a small tip for doing so. Relaxing with a Coco Loco while enjoying watching some other people get sprayed is good fun.

10. Hang out at the Beach at Rocky Cay

The eastern side of the island is home to several nice beaches. The beach in front of Rocky Cay makes for a good spot to relax and enjoy one of them.

It’s a good spot to enjoy lunch as well. You can order from the nearby restaurant or from vendors on the beach. Be sure to enjoy a fresh fried fish with rice and the local favorite breadfruit, which is served fried and tastes almost like a mix between yuca and potato.

You can also swim or hire a boat to take you out to the tiny rocky island of Rocky Cay. There is a tiny beach bar here that has terrific piña coladas, a few benches, and not much else.

The waters off the tiny island are good for snorkeling and swimming. There is a shipwreck nearby from when a ship ran aground on the reef. While it’s possible to snorkel around the ship, you should do so only with great caution as there are many rusted and sharp edges.

11. Go Diving

San Andrés is a great place to get your feet wet with scuba diving. There are several agencies that offer introductory mini courses at very reasonable prices. They include an explanation of the gear and a short dive with trainers just off the coast of the island.

Divers with experience can also do longer offshore excursions and compete certification courses on San Andrés Island.

Check reviews and prices for the best Scuba Diving trips

12. Visit Providencia and Santa Catalina

Located northeast of San Andrés are the even smaller islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina. These two islands are practically unspoiled. They can be reached via ferry or small airplanes from San Andrés.

The islands were devastated by Hurricane Iota in November 2020 but have recently started to reopen to tourism.

What and Where to Eat on San Andrés

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there is great seafood on San Andrés. Here are some ideas for what to eat as well as where to eat.

13. Traditional Fried Fish Plate

This is best enjoyed on the beach. It’s similar to the fried fish you’ll find at the beaches of Cartagena and elsewhere in Colombia. You’ll get a whole fish fried to a golden crisp. It will be accompanied with rice and a small salad. On San Andrés, it will often come with local crop breadfruit instead of the mashed and fried plantain patties known as patacones common in the rest of Colombia.

14. Crab Empanadas

The crab empanadas, or empanada de cangrejo , is a must try food on San Andrés! The crab meat is seasoned to be just a little bit spicy. You can find them at street stalls and restaurants all over the island.

Some particularly good crab empanadas can be found at the tables set up on the corner by the Hotel Casablanca. In addition to the tasty empanads, you’ll also find a lady and her son who have for years been serving traditional plates at reasonable prices.

15. Try More Traditional Foods at Restaurante Lydia

Located just south of Rocky Cay Beach, you’ll find Restaurante Lydia. It’s famous for serving traditional foods from San Andrés. You can try a crab soup, a stew known as rondón or “rundown” with fish, tubers, and pig tails, beans with pig tail, and fish meatballs, among many others. It’s popular with both locals and visitors, and makes for a neat place to try some of the traditional foods of the island.

16. Enjoy the Food with a View and Good Vibes at La Regatta

La Regatta, located in downtown, is San Andrés’s most famous restaurant. It has a neat and colorful decor and the tables on the deck overlooking the marina are perfect for a romantic dinner.

All the seafood and cocktails are standouts here, but it’s probably most famous for its different preparations of lobster. The lobster sampler platter where you can choose 3 different sauces to try is perfect to share along with a tasty ceviche!

La Regatta is very popular, so you will want to make sure you get a reservation at least a day in advance to ensure you get a table.

Where to Stay on San Andrés

Most travelers will prefer to stay on the northern end of the island, known appropriately as the North End, and where the main downtown area of San Andrés is located. It’s also where Spratt Bight, the best overall beach on the island is located, not to mention lots of shops and restaurants.

There are many options here ranging from the upscale Hotel Casablanca and the all-inclusive Decameron Isleño to more moderately priced places like the Hotel Portobelo .

  • Check Hotel Casablanca on TripAdvisor | Hotels.com or Booking.com
  • Check Decameron Isleño on TripAdvisor | Hotels.com or Booking.com
  • Check Hotel Portobelo on TripAdvisor | Hotels.com or Booking.com

There are a number of other options around the island, ranging from higher end options like the other Decameron resort properties to smaller bed and breakfast style lodges known as posadas.

Check Decameron Resort on TripAdvisor | Hotels.com or Booking.com

Final Tips for San Andrés Island

The local population has a unique West Indies creole culture and many speak a dialect of English similar to Jamaican pataois. Still, it’s best to have some Spanish as many restaurant owners and workers are transplants from the Colombian mainland and may not speak English.

Taxis on San Andrés are quite pricey, especially when compared to the rest of Colombia. That is one of the reasons why most travelers will prefer to stay on the North End where lots of things are in easy walking distance.

There are buses and they run fairly regularly down most of the east coast of the island, but are more sporadic for the west coast, interior, and southern tip. Those areas are best visited by renting a golf cart for that reason.

San Andrés is a duty free zone and there are many shops that sell perfumes, candies, electronics, and liquor much cheaper than found on mainland Colombia.

Finally, tourists to San Andrés do have to purchase a tourist card as a form of tax. This includes Colombian nationals who are not residents of the island. You have to show this card upon arrival and departure. Airlines usually sell it before boarding. If not, you’ll need to purchase it upon arrival.
