Famous for producing the Nilgiri tea, Coonoor is one of the most beautiful hill stations situated in the Nilgiri hills in Western Ghats, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located at an altitude of over 6000 ft ASL, Coonoor is the quieter cousin of otherwise famous and busier Ooty. It is situated around 20 kilometres from Ooty.

Coonoor has the beauty of tea plantations, valleys, ravines and waterfalls all around. There are quite a few trails for trekking and hiking in the surrounding hills of Western Ghats around Coonoor.

The place is divided between Upper Coonoor and Lower Coonoor. Whereas Lower Coonoor is a city centre with most tourist crowds, Upper Coonoor is far from traffic and crowd and is best for people who wish to stay in the midst of hills. History of Coonoor

Coonoor has been home to the Toda tribe, indigenous to the region. The place was set up as a summer retreat and sanatorium to treat sick European patients during the early 19th century after being discovered by John Sullivan, who belonged to the East India Company. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was also set up to make travel to the hill station easier.

1. sim's park.

One of the best and most recommended places to visit when in Coonoor is Sim’s Park. It is more of a botanical garden having rich treasure of thousands of different and exotic species of flora and age-old trees that were brought from other parts of the country.

The park was set up by Mr. J. D Sim, the then Secretary to the government and Major Murray in what was once a deep ravine in the Coonoor Valley. The park is spread across 30 acres of land at around 4 kilometres from Coonoor Railway Station towards north.

The park is divided into different sections based on the type of plantations or flora, built in the form of terraced flower-bed garden with wide footpaths lined alongside. Apart from the flowers, the garden also has manicured lawns and rockeries.

The wide and diverse variety of plants and trees pull a huge number of botanists and nature enthusiasts to Sim’s Park every year during the annual fruit and vegetable festival that’s held in the month of May.

The garden is also famous for some of its most exquisite variety of trees like the Rudraksh or beed tree, Cinnamomum (known for having aromatic oils in their leaves and bark) and Queensland karry pine, which is an ornamental tree. The Araucaria, Pine, Turpentine, Quercus, Phoenix, Magnolia, Tree ferns and Camellia are among other varieties found here.

2. Droog Fort

Another most popular tourist destinations around Coonoor is the Droog Fort which is of both historical and mythological importance. Located at around 15- 17 kilometres from Coonoor, the fort was an outpost built by Tipu Sultan in the 18th Century to guard his region. What remains of the outpost is just ruins with a single wall and the watchtower that gives a mesmerizing view of the surroundings of the hill station.

As far as mythological legend goes, the place finds its association with Mahabharata to be the residence of the local demon named Bakasura. Hence, it is also called Bakasura Malai.

The fort is a trekking point and can be reached by trekking down 4 kilometres from Nonsuch Tea Estate.

3. Dolphin’s Nose View point

Dolphin’s nose is a gigantic rock protruding outside the level surrounded by canyons on both sides with Catherine falls of Kotagiri at a point where it is clearly visible and is absolutely scenic from the top of the rock formation. Situated 12 kilometres from Coonoor Railway Station, the road to Dolphin’s nose is most scenic with serpentine roads surrounded by tea plantations on both sides.

Due to its location and given the fact that it gives visitors an unobstructed view of the ravines, valleys and canyons from here, Dolphin’s nose view point is a very famous tourist spot in Coonoor. One can also see beautiful sunrises and sunsets from here. It is also situated close to some other tourist destinations like the Tiger Hill, Catherine Falls , Lamb’s Rock and Kotagiri.

4. Lamb’s Rock

If one intends to have views of Coimbatore plains and Nilgiri hills at one go, Lamb’s Rock in Burliar village situated at 8 kilometres from Coonoor Railway Station is the best place to be. It is on the way to Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint. The locals usually flock here on holidays and weekends as it best serves as a picnic spot.

The place is named after Captain Lamb who intended to open a road to this place. One can also trek to this place. The nearest tourist destinations from Lamb’s Rock are Dolphin’s Nose (5km), Sim’s Park (7 km) and Law’s Falls (14 km).

5. Law’s Falls

Situated inside the Coonoor forest range, Law’s Falls forms out of the Coonoor river near its intersection with Mettupalayam ghat route. The waterfall that is named after Colonel Law, falls from a height of 180 feet through multiple cascades to reach to the bottom. It is a major picnic spot for locals and finds huge footfall post monsoon. The waterfall is located at a distance of 7 kilometres from Coonoor town on the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty road.

6. Wellington Golf Course

Spread across an area of 69 acres of land, at around 3 kilometres from Coonoor town, lies Wellington, a small town in Nilgiris that houses the Wellington Golf Course. It is one of the oldest Golf Clubs in South India with a history that dates back to a little over 100 years.

The founding year of the Wellington golf club is considered to be 1873, the year when a brick cricket pavilion was built in order to have a recreation ground for the soldiers of the then military cantonment. At present the military town of Wellington is the headquarters of Madras Regimental Centre.

While it retains the old- world charm of the colonial era, Wellington Golf Club is also affiliated with many top golf clubs in the country. Apart from its famous golf course and the brick cricket pavilion, there is a cricket pitch, a tennis court and a restaurant inside the premises. The golf course is also used for shooting films.

7. All Saints Church

All Saints Church is an English style Anglical protestant church built in 1854 adorning antique dark wood roofs and interiors with stained glass windows making it look like a perfect classical English countryside structure. The church houses a very old pipe organ.

The place is very peaceful and is surrounded by Junipers and Pine trees. The church is located on the Kotagiri road and is right next to the The Taj Garden Retreat Hotel. The well-maintained church cemetery has memorials of soldiers to commoners who died far away from home.

8. St. George’s Church

The St. George’s Church is a must visit place in Coonoor. As opposed to the classic British architecture of All Saints Church, the St. George’s Church is a Gothic structure, designed by Colonel J. T. Boileau which is also referred to as ‘Cantonment Church’ due to the building style. Since the church was controlled by the military during the Raj era, it is also called as ‘Garrison Church’.

The white marbled floor of the altar gives an elegant look to the interiors of the church which also has paintings of St. Michael, St. George and another painting of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

A special service is arranged here on the occasion of National Martyr’s Day to honour all our Martyrs. The service is arranged on the Sunday which falls nearer to the Martyr’s Day.

9. Ketti Valley

Coonoor, with its sprawling tea plantations and panoramic valleys, is the second most visited tourist place in the Nilgiris, after Ooty. Coonoor is just 17 kilometers from Ooty and is popular as a weekend getaway on its own terms or it can be clubbed with an Ooty tour .

I visited Coonoor with my family on a quick 3-day trip, spending two days in Ooty and one day in Coonoor. Although, we spend just a day in Coonoor, we could cover most Coonoor attractions. Here’s my comprehensive Coonoor travel guide for all the information you need to plan an awesome trip.

What to pack for coonoor, coonoor travel guide: places to visit.

The most important places to visit are easily accessible by road and can be covered in one or two days’ time.

Established in 1874 by the then Madras mayor, J. D. Sims, Sim’s Park is a Japanese-style botanical park stretching over 30 acres of land in Upper Coonoor. The park is home to some exotic plants and trees that co-habit with native fauna. Sim’s Park is less than 3 kilometers from Coonoor Railway Station and the main bus depo. You can go boating in the lake here.

Ashley’s Tip: Sim’s Park hosts an annual vegetable show in the month of May, in which skilled artisans design and exhibit vegetable crafts in different shapes and sizes. May will be a great time to plan your trip to be part of this show.

Lamb’s Rock

Lamb’s Rock is a must-see spot in Coonoor with its mesmerizing views and quaint surroundings. Located just 7 kilometers from Coonoor Railway Station, and en route to Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint, Lamb’s Rock is a great place for hiking and picnicking with family.

After reaching the parking area, you have to buy tickets and once you enter, you have to take the paved way, that meanders through a pine forest, to take you to the viewing point. We enjoyed this short trek, listening to the birds and watching monekys playfully going about their way. The place is named after a certain captain Lamb who earnestly pursued paving the way to the viewpoint.

Dolphin’s Nose View Point

Dolphin’s Nose is a viewing point about 12 kilometers from Coonoor town. It is a mountain with a spectacular view of Catharine Falls on one side and several smaller water falls on the other side, facing Kotagiri. The viewing point got its unusual name on account of the elongated tip of the mountain that resembles a dolphin’s nose.

You can drive till the entrance of the viewing point, from where you need to get tickets for a nominal charge. Once inside, you get a 180-degree breathtaking panoramic view of the Nilgiris from a height of 1550 meters. We visited in November and as soon as we reached Dolphin’s Nose View Point, it started raining torrentially. Unfortunately, we had to cut short our time here.

Ashley’s Tip: If you want to make the most of your visit to Dolphin’s Nose, plan to spend half a day there, carry a picnic basket and spend some quality time with your dear ones. If you are in a hurry and planning to cover major spots in Coonoor in just one day, you can avoid this place. During peak season and weekends, you can expect long lines of traffic and it could take a while to get inside. If you are in a hurry, get down somewhere on the way and click photos on the roadside. I bet you, they are going to be spectacular!

Catherine Falls

Although situated in Kotagiri, Catherine Falls can easily be made part of a Coonoor trip as it is just 22 kilometers from Coonoor Railway Station. Catherine Falls is a double-cascaded waterfall, where the upper cascade is at a height of 79 meters.

If you are pumped for hiking, drive to the Catherine Falls viewpoint parking area, and hike through the tea plantations across a local village for one kilometer to reach the viewpoint. Listen to the music of nature in the murmurs of the falls and you bet the walk will be as beautiful as the view.

Ashley’s Tip: There are no eateries in the stretch to Catherine Falls, so it is best to carry sufficient water and snacks with you, but do not leave any trash behind!

Tea Plantations

A visit to Coonoor is incomplete without a stroll through its tea plantations and an experience of tea tasting in one of its tea factories. Highfield Tea Factory is the most famous tea factory in Coonoor. 

Here, you can learn about the tea-making process and taste a variety of flavored teas. In Coonoor’s tea plantations, you will most likely find a photographer who will get you dressed in the traditional attire of tea plantation laborers and get you some amazing photographs, posing and holding the traditional tea leaves basket amidst the plantations.

Coonoor is easily accessible by road and train. The nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport, situated 70 kilometers from here.

Coonoor is 35 kilometers from Mettupalayam and can be reached in just over an hour (subject to traffic). From Ooty, Coonoor is a 45 minutes drive of 20 kilometers.

The best means of transportation to Coonoor is definitely via toy train on the picturesque Nilgiri Mountain Railway .

March to June

The summer months of March, April, May, and June are considered peak seasons in Coonoor. This is because

• The schools close for summer vacations during these months,
• Sim’s Park hosts an annual vegetable show in the month of May, attracting a huge crowd from across Tamil Nadu
• Tourists in the plains throng to hill stations to escape the extreme heat in the summer months

During the summer months, Coonoor stays warm at a temperature between 25 °C to 37 °C.

Ashley’s Tip: While this is peak season, there have been instances of drought and water shortage in March in recent years. It will be best to look up any water-shortage news about Coonoor before you visit in the summer months.

July to October

July is the beginning of the monsoon season in Coonoor which peaks in September. During this time Coonoor gets quite slushy. If you want to avoid the crowd or intent to spend most of your trip in a tea plantation or a resort with in-house activities, this might be the best time as hotel charges are the cheapest during the monsoon season.

Post-monsoon, when the rains get lighter in October, you can see the lakes and waterfalls at their mightiest. The valleys turn green with the spurt of new fauna making it a spectacular time to visit.

November to February

This is the time when the rains start making way for chilly and misty weather in the Nilgiri hills. Coonoor is only mildly cold at a temperature ranging between 10 °C to 20 °C making your trip a pleasant one.

Hiring a private car, bike, or auto rickshaw is the best way to get around and visit all major attractions. You can contact your hotel to arrange a vehicle for you. If you are on a one-day visit and arrive by train, you can hire a taxi or auto rickshaw just outside the station to take you on a day trip.

Coonoor being a winter destination, you will need to pack accordingly. Here are the must pack items for Coonoor:

Clothing : If traveling in the winter months from November to February, carry heavy woolens; at any other time of the year, light woolens will do.

Footwear : Carry comfortable sneakers as there will be lots of walking over uneven and slippery surfaces.

Umbrella or Raincoat : If visiting in the monsoon months from July to September, a raincoat is a must. Nilgiris receive rain in 9 months a year, so it is best to carry an umbrella with you for any unanticipated rain.

Lifestyle : Carry sunscreens and use them even if it is not so sunny, as you are exposed to a higher level of UV rays on hill stations due to their altitude. Don’t forget to throw your moisturizer and lip care cream into your toiletries bag during the winter months to avoid dry skin and chapped lips!
