Tokyo Bay Cruises

Discover Tokyo Bay in style from these ships

Ignatius Koh

Tokyo Bay is a winding stretch of water that offers extraordinary views of the city's skyline — not just on land. Near Shiba Celestine Hotel , there are cruises around the bay that let you appreciate Tokyo's beauty while gliding on the waters.

1. Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise

Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise lets you experience the high life for a couple of hours. With lunch, afternoon, sunset and dinner cruises available, all you need to do is sit on the top deck and enjoy a drink while feasting on local and international cuisine. The Classica yacht brings you to the most popular sights across Tokyo Bay, including the Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and Odaiba before concluding at the Hinode Passenger Terminal.

Cruise and restaurant packages start from ¥1,500 for the shorter afternoon cruise to lavish dinner packages up to ¥20,000. If you decide to splurge it all, the entire yacht is available for booking, and you can have a peaceful afternoon to yourself or your friends.

2. Sumida River Cruise Ship

This cruise ship service might be notable for its futuristic Himiko ship that runs from Asakusa to Odaiba, but the cruise destinations are not too shabby either. Y ou can travel between 12 locations in the Tokyo Bay area, including Hamarikyu Pier for Hamarikyu Garden , Odaiba , and Kasai Rinkai Park — all picturesque locations.

Making the cruise more attractive are its distance-based fares that range from ¥ 200 for a 5-minute trip (for example, from Hinode to Harumi Pier) to ¥ 2,000 (for the 70-minute ride from Asakusa to Toyosu).

3. Gozabune Atakemaru Cruise

Gozabune Atakemaru, also known as the Samurai Ship, takes cruising to the next level, by bringing a brand new experience to Tokyo's waterways. Offering a bay cruise, traditional kabuki-inspired show and Japanese dinner course, the Gozabune combines tradition with modern style. The luxury vessel, an Edo period replica liner like that owned by feudal lords such as shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, sets itself apart on the waters with its majestic design.

Guests are naturally encouraged to move freely around the boat's deck too during the cruise, with the route providing good views of landmarks such as Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Gate Bridge and even Tokyo Tower along the way.

The cruise caters to several dining plans, with the whole ship even available to charter for larger groups of up to 500 guests. You can pick from a 40-minute day cruise that departs from Hinode Pier at 14:50, a 75-minute evening cruise departing at 17:30 that includes a show and one drink, or a 120-minute night cruise departing at 19:15 that includes a show and all-you-can-eat food and drink.

Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: Enjoy Sightseeing and Dining on Tokyo's Beloved Waterway (+Cherry Blossom Tours & Tickets)

Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo mizube line – taking you to the edge of tokyo, japan’s first “on demand” water bus taxi – in tokyo, urban launch – tokyo’s fanciest water bus experience, symphony tokyo bay cruise – enjoy gorgeous views and amazing food, other cruises, cherry blossom cruises.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . The company operating Tokyo Cruise has a storied history, dating back a century to its origins as the "Sumida River Steamship Company." Back then, it was famed for its issenjoki , or "one sen steamboats," so named because a single journey cost just one sen—a modest sum that translates to about 100 yen in today's terms. These affordable steamboats were a popular mode of transportation among the city's populace, providing an accessible and efficient way to traverse Tokyo's most active areas.

tokyo day cruise

Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

tokyo day cruise

Tokyo Cruise boasts two standout vessels in its fleet, the Himiko and the Hotaluna , both crafted under the visionary design of Leiji Matsumoto, the famed mangaka behind iconic series such as Space Battleship Yamato , Space Pirate Captain Harlock , and Galaxy Express 999 . These ships, with their distinctive sci-fi-inspired aesthetics, have become the defining symbols of Tokyo's water bus service. The Himiko and Hotaluna each serve specific routes. The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

tokyo day cruise

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!

In addition to the scenic water buses, Tokyo introduced a pioneering service in 2015: Japan's first "on-demand boats" known as Tokyo Water Taxi. Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Visually, Tokyo Water Taxis stand out, mirroring the iconic look of classic taxis with their bright yellow exteriors. This nod to the famous yellow cabs of New York adds a distinctive charm to Tokyo's waterways. Their innovative approach to maritime transport is garnering significant interest from both locals and tourists, marking a fresh chapter in Tokyo's urban mobility.

tokyo day cruise

Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. Although reservations are needed (available in Japanese only), there's a chance for impromptu rides at a low price if spaces are available. This plan is an excellent introduction to Tokyo’s water taxi service for those not ready to commit to a full course. Finally, there are special cherry blossom cruises (operated from March 19 to April 7 in 2024) to enjoy. Since these are chartered, they are best for enjoying with friends or family. Enjoy Tokyo on the Water With These Cruising Trips

Picture courtesy of Klook Spend a relaxing day cruising down the Sumida River in Tokyo. This cruise offered by Tokyo Mizube Line offers one of the best ways to enjoy the sights from Asakusa to Odaiba. With beautiful domed windows as well as a large viewing platform, you can enjoy a range of photogenic attractions from Tokyo Skytree to the famous Rainbow Bridge.

Enjoy Tokyo on the Water With These Cruising Trips

Picture courtesy of Klook The cruises on the Tokyo Mizube Line take around an hour and twenty minutes, and you can choose whether to depart from Asakusa or Odaiba.

This means you have the fantastic opportunity to visit the futuristic art facility TeamLab Planets Tokyo in Toyosu and take a stroll around the traditional streets of Asakusa or vice versa!

Make sure that you're at the Asakusa or Odaiba pier at least 15 minutes prior to the departure. Please note that the last cruise departure is at 13:30.

On board the cruising restaurant Symphony, you can enjoy a delicious three-course meal while taking in iconic Tokyo sights from the water. Enjoy fresh Japanese seafood while gazing at the towering visage of Tokyo Skytree or delicious Japanese beef while sailing gracefully under the Rainbow Bridge.

The Lunch Cruise takes a leisurely course over two hours from 11:50 to 14:00 giving you time to appreciate the scenery around Tokyo Bay.

Top tip: for a guaranteed window seat, choose the Japanese Beef Steak Set meal!

The Afternoon Tea Time Cruise is one of the shortest on offer, allowing time-restricted visitors to pack it into a busy schedule of sightseeing and other travel plans.

The Afternoon Tea Time Cruise mainly takes in the sights around Odaiba's famous Rainbow Bridge and can be enjoyed with cake, croissant, or a sandwich-themed meal set. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of seasonal desserts based on the time of year they choose to take the cruise.

This ship departs at 15:00 for the Afternoon Tea Time Cruise: the entire experience takes approximately 50 minutes from start to finish.

The Sunset Cruise offered by Symphony is a great way to experience this and enjoy an early dinner!

The cruise offers a delicious set meal that allows you to choose between a French or Italian meal. However, for the best experience be sure to choose the Japanese beef steak set menu for a window seat vista of the sunset cruise. The Tokyo Bay Sunset Cruise takes place from 16:20 to 18:20 running for approximately two hours.

5. Tokyo Bay Dinner Cruise

Picture courtesy of Klook The final offering of the Symphony cruise line might just be one of the most majestic cruise trips you can take out on Tokyo Bay! Enjoy the glittering lights of the Tokyo Waterfront and Odaiba on this beautiful dinner cruise.

This Dinner Cruise offers much of the same food options as the Lunch and Sunset Cruises with the added appeal that you can enjoy your meal along with the beautiful lights that twinkle around Tokyo Bay. This magical atmosphere is ideal for visitors looking to enjoy a romantic cruise as a couple or a chance to make glittering new memories with a good group of friends.

The Tokyo Bay Dinner Cruise takes place from 19:00 to 20:30, and the fact that the cruising route takes the shape of a heart is an added romantic bonus!

How long is the Sumida River cruise?

The Sumida River cruise in Tokyo typically lasts around 40 minutes to one hour, depending on the specific route and any stops or sightseeing points along the way. This leisurely boat ride offers passengers a scenic view of Tokyo's riverside landmarks, including the iconic Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa district, and various modern and traditional structures along the Sumida River. The cruise provides a relaxing and enjoyable way to experience the city from a unique vantage point, offering insights into Tokyo's history and culture as you sail along the waterway.

What is the name of the river in Tokyo?

The river that flows through Tokyo is called the Sumida River (隅田川 - Sumidagawa). This river runs through the heart of Tokyo and is a significant waterway in the city. The Sumida River is approximately 27 kilometers long and flows from the Arakawa River to Tokyo Bay, passing by notable landmarks such as the Asakusa district and the Tokyo Skytree along its route.

Where do celebrity cruises depart from in Tokyo?

Celebrity Cruises do not have regular departures from Tokyo. However, cruise itineraries and departure ports for various cruise lines, including Celebrity Cruises, can change over time. It is recommended to directly check with Celebrity Cruises or visit their official website for the most up-to-date information on their current cruise schedules and departure ports, including any departures from Tokyo that may be available.

Sumida river cruise price

Sumida River cruise prices in Tokyo typically range based on the type and duration of the cruise. Regular sightseeing cruises, lasting around 40-60 minutes, may cost between 1,500 to 3,000 yen per person, varying depending on the amenities provided. For specialty cruises like evening dinner cruises or private charters with longer durations or themed experiences, prices can span from 5,000 to 10,000 yen or more per person. It's advisable to confirm current rates with the cruise operators or tour companies as prices can fluctuate seasonally and over time.

Where do cruises leave from Tokyo?

Cruises departing from Tokyo typically leave from the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal, also known as Harumi Passenger Terminal. This terminal is one of the primary ports for cruise ships in Tokyo and is situated in the Harumi area of Tokyo Bay. From here, cruises set sail to various destinations both within Japan and to international ports of call. It's worth noting that cruise itineraries and departure points can vary based on the cruise line and specific voyage, so it's advisable to check with the cruise operator for the most current information regarding departures from Tokyo.

Spend a Relaxing Day along Tokyo's Rivers

Cruising around Tokyo Bay and along some of these scenic rivers is truly a unique way to spend a day out in Tokyo.

It's a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of foot traffic and enjoy a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Why not give cruising a try next time you're in the heart of Tokyo?

10 best Asia cruises for a bucket-list trip

I t would be easy to argue that a cruise is the best way to see Asia, especially for first-time visitors to the region. Many cruise lines build robust itineraries designed to visit as many bucket-list destinations as possible across numerous countries. From the bustling streets of Tokyo and the tranquil waters of Vietnam's Ha Long Bay to the ancient temples in Cambodia and street food vendors of Singapore, cruising allows travelers to uncover the richness of Asia with ease and comfort.

Other cruise lines specialize in one specific area, such as the Yangtze or Mekong rivers or the highlights of Japan. These narrow-focus cruises provide a culturally enriching look at centuries-old traditions or access to hidden gems that traditional tourists might overlook.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Cruise lines with ships large and small operate throughout Asia and vary in their levels of luxury, offshore offerings and onboard amenities. Many travelers to Asia are looking for two-week or longer cruises to help make the most of a long trek across the Pacific; however, both shorter and longer itineraries abound to ensure there's an Asia cruise for every vacation length and budget.

Here are 10 of the best Asia cruises to consider.

Crystal's 16-night Singapore to Hong Kong cruise

Over a little more than a two-week span in January 2025, passengers on Crystal's Singapore-to-Hong Kong itinerary will stop at some of the most popular ports in Asia. You'll first spend a few days in Thailand, where you can attend a meditation in Koh Samui or visit an elephant sanctuary where you'll feed the herd sugar cane and bananas before giving them a mud bath.

In Vietnam, you can ride on the back of a Vespa through the busy streets and markets of Hanoi, take a cooking class with a Vietnamese chef or kayak the crystal clear waters of Ha Long Bay. At the end of your cruise, enjoy a reflexology foot massage in Hong Kong after a traditional lunch in town. Rest up between days of sightseeing and activity with five days at sea.

Crystal truly excels at immersing passengers in cultural experiences with locals. Its carefully curated excursions take you to small villages where the locals are excited to shake your hand or invite you to help them prepare a regional dish using their traditional cooking methods.

Who should go: Luxury-focused travelers who appreciate fine dining, 24/7 butler service, attentive crew, spacious guest rooms and carefully curated excursions will find their home away from home aboard Crystal Symphony. With just 606 passengers on board, this ship is small enough to be intimate and easy to navigate, yet large enough to house all the desired amenities (including a pool, spa, walking track, fitness center, golf driving nets, putting green and tennis and pickleball courts).

MSC Cruises' 5-night round-trip cruise from Okinawa

MSC Cruises ' short five-night Asia cruise to Japan and Taiwan is a great way to add a cruise to your vacation in Japan. Depart from Okinawa for Ishigaki, known for Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and the black pearl cultivation on Kabira Bay. The next stop, an overnight in Taipei, brings opportunities to see Taipei 101 Tower (once the world's tallest building, but now in fifth place) and ancient artifacts in the National Palace Museum.

Your final stop is Miyako Island, a picturesque spot covered by sugar cane fields. With no sea days, this itinerary is short and sweet. However, it doesn't skimp on ports of call.

Who should go: This five-night cruise in January 2025 on the 5,655-passenger MSC Bellissima is geared toward budget-conscious working adults looking for a shorter trip to Asia or folks who want to add a cruise to a longer land-based tour. For a VIP experience, upgrade to the MSC Yacht Club 's private sanctuary, which offers 24/7 butler service, exclusive venues (like a fine dining restaurant and a private sun deck), and even a personalized minibar and pillow menu.

Viking's 14-night Classic China and the Coast cruise

For many, walking along the Great Wall is a dream. For passengers aboard Viking Yi Dun on the Classic China and the Coast cruise, it's a reality. Viking sets itself apart with a China-focused cruisetour that combines a five-night precruise land stay in Beijing and Xian with a nine-night cruise through the East and South China Seas. You can choose from multiple fall 2024 departures.

In Beijing, you can visit the Forbidden City and Great Wall before flying to Xian to admire the famous Terra Cotta Warriors archeological site. You can also take in Shanghai's impressive skyline and Garden City before sailing along China's coast. Notable stops include Zhoushan, where you can observe Buddhist culture, and Xiamen for a traditional tea ceremony.

Who should go: Viking appeals to cruisers who prefer a more inclusive pricing model. The line's fares include one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call; free Wi-Fi; beer and wine served with lunch and dinner; port fees and taxes; and 24/7 specialty coffees, teas and bottled water. The all-veranda ship, 930-passenger Viking Yi Dun is small enough to dock in places the larger ships cannot, offering a more up-close and personal experience without the crowds.

Royal Caribbean's 7-night Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo cruise

Royal Caribbean's Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo itinerary offers the best of Japan in a short span of time. The weeklong sailing in November 2025 begins and ends in Shanghai (the port is Baoshan), with two sea days and stops in the Japanese cities of Kobe, Kyoto (Osaka) and Tokyo.

In Kobe, visit the waterfalls of Mount Rokko, take a dip in a hot spring bath (called an onsen) and dine on the region's famous wagyu beef. Kyoto is known for its multicourse cuisine, shopping, a famous Zen garden, hidden temples and its Geisha district. No visit to Japan would be complete without a port call in Tokyo, where soaring skyscrapers and traditional shrines coexist harmoniously.

Who should go: Travelers with children, multigenerational families and anyone looking for a great deal on an Asian cruise should consider Royal Caribbean 's offerings. The 4,246-passenger Spectrum of the Seas has high-quality and tech-infused entertainment, myriad bars and dining options (including Sichuan Red, a specialty dining experience filled with Asian-inspired flavors), skydiving and surf simulators, a casino, a teen disco, multiple pools and a splash pad. Expect an international crowd on board, with guests from around the world.

Seabourn's 14-night Taiwan, South Korea and Japan's Spring Flowers cruise

Looking for a cruise that covers a lot of ground during a special time of year? Seabourn's Taiwan, South Korea and Japan's Spring Flowers itinerary begins in Hong Kong. It maximizes your time at sea, with 11 port stops in four countries over 14 days — and it all happens during cherry blossom season in March 2025. Expect views of Mount Fuji, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, tours of castles and temples, and delicious street food throughout your journey.

Highlights in Taiwan include visiting a Ming Dynasty temple on Penghu Island and seeing Taipei 101, the world's second-tallest skyscraper. During the Japanese ports, you can plan a visit to the Shureimon gate — a UNESCO Heritage Site in Okinawa's capital — or take a guided hike through Gangala Valley to see the ancient banyan trees. Finally, in South Korea, stop by the Dongmun traditional market and the Tongdosa Temple, which functions as a museum full of centuries-old relics.

Who should go: Retirees who love spoiling themselves with luxurious amenities will enjoy this two-week getaway. The 458-passenger Seabourn Quest has 229 suites, each with a spacious bathroom featuring a separate tub and shower. Guests can stay busy during sea days with the card room, plunge pool, whirlpool spas and fitness center. Seabourn 's all-inclusive model also covers gratuities as well as complimentary wines and spirits.

Princess Cruises' 13-night Circle Japan Fall Foliage cruise

A line long devoted to offering Japan cruises, Princess Cruises truly delivers with this 13-day Circle Japan Fall Foliage itinerary in November 2025. Aside from one port stop in Busan, South Korea, the entire journey is focused on Japan. The sailing begins and ends in Tokyo, with 10 port stops in Hakodate, Niigata, Kanazawa, Sakaiminato, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Kochi, Kobe, Wakayama and Omaezaki.

Points of interest for excursion-planning purposes include Mount Fuji in Tokyo, the enchanting Kenroku-en Garden in Kanazawa, Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki, and the 1,200-year-old Koyasaan monastery complex — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wakayama. Check out the Morning Market (where chefs purchase fresh fish to make sushi) in Hakodate and learn about rice's importance to sake production at a brewery in Niigata.

Who should go: Princess tends to attract retirees with its classic cruise style. The 2,710-passenger Diamond Princess has something for every guest, including Broadway-style shows after dinner and a number of restaurants. (Don't miss sashimi at Kai Sushi.) The Izumi Japanese Bath, the largest of its kind at sea, gives guests a traditional onsen experience, complete with hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas against a backdrop of the sea.

Victoria Cruise Line's 3-night Three Gorges Highlights cruise

For those yearning to see the Yangtze — Asia's longest river and the third-longest in the world — Victoria Cruise Lines is a safe bet. It's the only American-managed cruise line on this river and has been in business for 30 years.

The Three Gorges Highlights sailing from Chongqing to Yichang departs daily from March through November each year and showcases daily life on the Yangtze as well as the area's extraordinary Three Gorges Dam project (China's new engineering marvel). You'll be awed by forest-covered mountains, sky-high cliffs and the world's largest ship lock with a ship lift. Shore excursions receive rave reviews from passengers, and the ships only hold about 200 passengers.

Who should go: Travelers looking for an exceptional add-on experience to their trip to China should consider this three-night sailing (a standard length for this experience, unlike the longer river cruises found in Europe). Victoria recommends booking through a travel agent who can reserve your cruise as part of a package tour offered by local tour operators. Expect lectures about the area's history and sights, cuisine focused on Chinese and Western flavors, onboard Tai Chi lessons and calligraphy demonstrations, and a cabin to fit every desired level of luxury.

Azamara's 20-night Treasure of Asia cruise

You can see a lot of Asia in 20 days, especially if you're doing the Treasure of Asia Voyage with Azamara in March 2025. Beginning in Singapore, the ship will wind its way through Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand — that's eight countries checked off your bucket list in one trip.

Tour Manila on a bamboo bike, explore the silk factories of Hoi An, zoom through the canals of the Mekong delta on a speedboat outside Ho Chi Minh City and visit the Grand Palace in Bangkok by tuk-tuk.

Who should go: Cruisers who prefer a smaller ship (684 passengers) that still offers plenty of variety — such as seven restaurants and lounges, a swimming pool and a spa — will find Azamara Onward to be just right for their vacation. Azamara includes a couple of helpful extras in its fare: prepaid gratuities and free self-service laundry in addition to select standard spirits, international beers, and a changing selection of red and white wines by the glass.

Uniworld's 15-day Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia and The Mekong cruise

Travelers with their hearts set on exploring the mighty Mekong River — the 12th longest in the world, which runs through Southwest China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Southern Vietnam — should put Uniworld Boutique River Cruises at the top of their list. The line offers Mekong River sailings throughout 2024 and 2025, which it packages together with pre- and postcruise land-based stays in Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap and Hanoi.

The Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia and The Mekong itinerary starts with a two-night stay in Ho Chi Minh City ahead of embarking on the 68-passenger Mekong Jewel. During the seven-night Mekong River cruise, guests will be able to witness the daily routines of villagers, visit local temples and discover how Khmer scarves are made. The cruise is followed by three nights in Siem Reap, allowing guests to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. The adventure ends with a three-night stay in Hanoi, where passengers can tour the bustling streets and vibrant markets of Vietnam's capital.

Who should go: Uniworld thoughtfully packages its river cruises with a land-based tour for travelers who want a seamless and all-inclusive experience. This cruise includes meals, complimentary drinks, 13 excursions, and accommodations on the ship and in city hotels. It also includes ground transfers and gratuities.

Celebrity's 12-night Bali, Malaysia & Thailand Holiday cruise

Consider this Bali, Malaysia & Thailand Holiday sailing with Celebrity Cruises to be your ticket to an "Eat, Pray, Love" moment in your life. Embarkation takes place in Bali, but you'll visit additional ports in Indonesia for a taste of all this country has to offer.

From the breathtaking Tiu Kelep waterfalls and towering volcanoes to the many wild tropical bird specials and reef fish in West Bali National Park, you'll discover so much about this region and perhaps a bit about yourself, too. Next up are stops in Malaysia, including an overnight stay in Penang (known for its beaches, Buddhist temples and exquisite butterfly farm). The 12-night trip wraps up with an overnight in Phuket, Thailand, allowing enough time to explore the tropical forests, palm-lined coves and vibrant nightlife before ending in Singapore.

Who should go: Celebrity is an excellent choice for cruisers who want a slightly elevated experience without dipping too much further into their wallets. This December 2025 sailing on the 2,218-passenger Celebrity Millennium is likely to attract anyone who wants to spend their winter holidays in a tropical locale beyond the more typical Caribbean adventures. This ship was revamped in 2019, so take advantage of the adults-only solarium, reimagined restaurants and lounges and the redesigned spa (not to mention Starlink for high-speed connectivity).

Team USA's Olivia Reeves was just 3 years old when Tara Nott-Cunningham won the country's first and only gold. Now, 21-year-old Reeves is aiming to break a world record at the Paris Olympics and if everything goes to plan, she could make history on her way to becoming one of the greatest weightlifters in U.S. history.

Reeves is competing in the women's 71kg session on Friday, Aug. 9, at 1:30 p.m. ET. You can stream live on Peacock or watch on USA Network at 5:30 p.m. ET .

"Becoming an Olympian has been the best experience and no matter what happens tomorrow I am proud to have earned the title," she wrote in an Instagram caption on Thursday.

Following the snatch session on Friday, Reeves was sitting at the top of the leaderboard with a massive 117kg snatch in her third attempt, breaking the Olympic record.

Back on top! USWNT defeats Brazil to win gold in women's soccer final

Weightlifters from China typically dominate the sport, but due to changes in the qualification process --- each country was allowed to send only three women and three men to Paris 2024, one for each weight class. The number of weight classes was also reduced from 14 to 10.

China's Liao Guifang, 2023 World Champion and weightlifting total world record holder (273kg), would have been Reeve's biggest threat to gold but she wasn't selected to join the team.

Reeves isn't without competition by any means.

Ecuador's Angie Palacios Dájomes was the silver medalist at the 2023 World Championship, beating Reeves' total by 2kg, and she's also eyeing the top spot in Paris after placing sixth in Tokyo. Another likely contender for gold is Loredana Toma of Romania, a six-time consecutive European champion. Dájomes is in second and Toma is in third, snatching 116kg and 115kg respectively.

Reeves' parents own a CrossFit gym and she has been competing since she was young. She holds an impressive number of 15 American records in youth, junior and senior categories.

She's the 2023 World Cup gold medalist in the 71kg and fans are looking for her to soon break the world record in both the snatch (121kg) and clean & jerk (154kg). Reeves' personal competition best is currently 120kg for the snatch and 151kg for the clean & jerk, and she can at least easily break the Olympic records (115kg & 148kg).

If these numbers don't mean anything to you, just know that Reeves is incredibly strong. She can squat more than three times her body weight, according to the number revealed by NPR . That's 224 kg, or nearly 500 pounds, and she's only getting stronger.

She has added 26kg to her total since the first Olympic qualifier, according to USA Weightlifting.

Olympic Weightlifting Schedule

Olympic weightlifting movements and rules.

The snatch and clean & jerk are powerful movements where athletes move massive amounts of weights on the barbell, oftentimes over twice their body weight, to an overhead position in mere seconds.

These movements appear simple, but they are incredibly technical and it can take several years to master how to move efficiently. The competition also appears straightforward. Athletes lift the barbell one at a time and the weight on the bar can only increase, never decrease, but coaches behind the scenes are playing chess as they plan their athlete's rest time and next attempts.

The snatch is the more technical of the two movements. Lifters must move the barbell from the floor to above their head in one fluid movement. They can't re-bend and extend their elbows once the weight is overhead, a controversial rule that many fans argue robs athletes of good lifts.

Clean & Jerk

As the name suggests, the clean & jerk are two separate movements counted as one combined lift. The clean portion of the lift involves the athlete "cleaning" the barbell up to the front rack position, or supported on top of their collarbone and shoulders.

The jerk includes the athlete elevating the weight by jumping and quickly pressing the barbell overhead. The same elbows rule applies to the jerk.

Three judges, two side judges and one in the front, signal a white light for a good lift and a red light for no lift. Athletes need at least two white lights for the lift to count. However, there's a jury panel that will review and make the final decision.

While the women's marathon is ongoing, here's what else you can expect from the final day of Paris 2024.

The last 13 gold medals will be awarded before the Closing Ceremony in the evening at the Stade de France .

At the Bercy Arena, the  women's basketball final  (3:30pm) will be the final event of the entire Games. Team USA will be expected to win their  eighth straight title .

Cycling (track) - Jason Kenny's successor to be anointed

At the  Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome , the last three track cycling finals will take place, including in the  men's keirin  (1:32pm).

Closing Ceremony brings curtain down

After all the events are done, it is time to finally celebrate the previous 16 days. The  Stade de France  will host the  Closing Ceremony  (9pm), a chance for the athletes to mingle amongst themselves and reflect on another Olympic Games.

Plus there will be the much-anticipated handover from Paris 2024 to  Los Angeles 2028 .

And as the Olympic Cauldron is extinguished, attention will turn towards the Paralympic Games, which open on 28 August, and  Milano Cortina 2026 , the next Olympic Winter Games, in barely a year and a half.

Athletics: Women's marathon underway!

Good morning, and welcome to the final day of the Olympic Games Paris 2024!

The women's marathon has just started, with 92 athletes vying to be called Olympic marathon champion. It's  very  early in the race, but the initial tempo that the lead athletes are setting is quite respectable and a few women are already falling away from this main pack.

Peres Jepchirchir (KEN) is the defending champion and will attempt to become the first woman to win two gold medals in the Olympic marathon.

The Parisian streets are packed with fans who are cheering on all the runners. We seem to have the flags of all 40 nations in the field represented among the crowd, which makes for a wonderful view.

He has drained 8 from 12 from three-point range and scored 24 points for the U.S.

France have given it their all –  Nicolas Batum is bleeding as he walks off court.

The buzzer goes.  USA win gold again!

France 87, USA 98. Let the celebrations begin.  Kevin Durant has won his fourth Olympic gold.

It's the fifth straight U.S. gold in men's basketball – 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024.

The French players stand in the middle of the court and applaud all sides of the arena. It will be a home silver for them.

Basketball: Curry threes help U.S.

Steph Curry is ridiculous from three-point range. He's making shot after shot and France can't stop him.

He's single-handedly helping pull the U.S. away from France.

Nine-point game into the last minute.

Basketball: France knocking on the door

France get this back to within three but then who else but  Steph Curry drains a long-range three for the USA.

It's back to a six-point game: 85-79 with 2:22 to play in the match.

The French are knocking on the door but not quite being let in just yet.

Kevin Durant sinks two free throws to put the lead back out to eight. Timeout France.

Basketball: U.S. still lead by eight

Every French basket is being cheered here but there's just not quite the spark for France at the moment.

For each time they try to start a run, the U.S. ensure they hit back to keep the gap at a decent margin.

USA up 82-74 with 4:15 to play.

Basketball: USA lead down to six points after three quarters

France managed to find their footing slightly as that third quarter wore on, and aren't exactly letting USA run away with this.

With nearly everyone in Bercy Arena behind them, they have closed to within six points at the end of the third.

France 66 USA 72.  Victor Wembanyama has 20 of those 66 and Yabusele 19. Four USA men are into double figures.

Basketball: USA lead grows

This final is getting away from the hosts now.

They're struggling to get a run going as the U.S. keep finding net.

France are being led by  Guerschon Yabusele 's 19 points, but they trail 51-63 with 5:33 left in the third.

Booker has 13 and  Steph Curry 12 for the U.S.

What an enthralling end to the b-boys breaking competition!

Aside from perhaps Republic of Korea's Hongten being shocked in the round-robin, the favourites all made it through to the elimination rounds.

Ultimately, it's Canada's  Phil Wizard who wins gold, beating home hope  Dany Dann in the gold medal battle by taking all three rounds and 23 of the 27 judges' votes.

Bronze goes to USA's world champion  Victor , who beat Japan's  Shigekix 3-0 as well.

Artistic swimming: People's Republic of China win duet gold

Believe it or not, there were  four sets of twins in the artistic swimming duet event (one of them part of a set of triplets).

And it's the Chinese twins  Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi who have taken gold. Their free routine wasn't the cleanest, but their big lead from the technical routine was enough to give them a total of 566.4783 points.

Great Britain 's  Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe took silver on 558.5367, while another set of twins, the Dutch sisters  Bregje and Noortje de Brouwer , won bronze on 558.3963.

Athletics: usa come close to world record to win women's 4x400m relay gold.

It's time for the last stadium event of the athletics programme: the  women's 4x400m relay final.

Big cheers for Ireland and the Netherlands, as well as Great Britain and of course France.

Femke Bol anchors the Netherlands.  Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and  Gabby Thomas run the second and third legs for the USA.

Off they go. A good start for the Dutch and USA. Jamaica have caught France on the stagger.

In they come for the first set of changeovers. USA lead as  Shamier Little hands off to McLaughlin-Levrone, the women's 400m hurdles champ and world record holder.

She is blitzing ahead of the field! Look at this advantage!

Jamaica and Ireland lead the chasers. But it's about to get worse for them – we have 200m champ  Thomas next for the US.

Rhasidat Adeleke has hauled Ireland up into second here. The Dutch are now third after that set of handovers.

This is a runaway win for the U.S., but who will complete the medal podium?

The handover to Alexis Holmes on anchor for USA but right behind it's Ireland, Great Britain, and Netherlands.

I think the Brits have the lead in the race for second as they come around the bend – and they do.

The USA come within a tenth of the world record that stands from 1988! 3:15.27 in a new Americas continental record.

Bol anchors the Dutch to silver in a national record 3:19.50.

Great Britain win bronze in 3:19.72, also a national record.

Ireland finish fourth. Over to the judges.

McEwen misses at 2.34m and Kerr goes over!

He sets off on a run into the infield and sinks to the ground on his back in the middle of the javelin landing area.

The rest of the high jumpers are applauding him as he runs back to them and hugs McEwen.

Gold for Kerr at 2.36m (2.34m jump-off), silver to McEwen also at 2.36m, and bronze to Barshim at 2.34m.

Athletics: usa win men's 4x400m relay gold.

So, time for that relay final as the noise in the stadium picks back up – France are in lane eight.

USA with Rai Benjamin on anchor are in lane four,  Botswana with  Letsile Tebogo in lane six.

Great Britain in lane seven have  Matt Hudson-Smith running second.

They all get away cleanly. Great Britain have already caught France on the stagger.

And in six, Botswana have caught up too! Botswana from Great Britain at the first change. Here come the USA too!

As they cut to the inside, Botswana lead. Botswana from USA and Great Britain at the second change – all looks clean.

USA's  Bryce Deadmon is pulling away on this third leg – but he is visibly tiring now on the straight as they hit the final leg.

It's Tebogo against Benjamin, Botswana against USA! Great Britain are a distant third. The noise is loud, the atmosphere electric!

Around they come for the final stretch and Benjamin only just leads from Tebogo!

Tebogo is closing in – but  USA win in an Olympic record 2:54.43! They came really close to the 31-year-old world record.

Botswana take silver in an African record 2:54.53, Great Britain bronze in a European record 2:55.83.

There was also an Asian record for Japan in sixth in 2:58.33.

We'll wait for the judges to sign off on it…

Athletics: men's high jump jump-off goes on.

Both men miss their jumps at 2.38m. That means the bar has come down to 2.36m.

McEwen goes first and takes the bar down. If Kerr can clear this, he will be Olympic champion.

So… nearly.

Both men are visibly tired. Down the bar comes to 2.34m.

They will pause here as the men's 4x400m relay final is about to go next on track.

Olympics 2024: Dame Lisa Carrington completes another hat-trick of golds

Michael Burgess

Michael Burgess

By Michael Burgess in Paris

In years from now, this is the Olympic memory that Kiwi parents will tell their children about.

This is the ‘I was there’ moment – where two New Zealanders shared top billing in an event at the Games.

It has happened rarely down the years and this one almost lived up to all the hype.

Dame Lisa Carrington was already a sporting immortal – so where is she now?

At the end of a packed programme in Paris, the 35-year-old has beaten a world-class field to claim her third gold of this Games and the eighth of her career.

Great rival Aimee Fisher never featured at the front of the race, unable to recover from a slow start and crossing fourth as the podium remained the same from Tokyo.

Carrington instead had to overhaul Hungarian Tamara Csipes, who led at the halfway mark by 0.18s. The Kiwi steadily reeled in the leader and eventually stopped the clock in an Olympic-best time of 1m 47.36s, 1.08s ahead of Csipes.

It completes Carrington’s second successive hat-trick of golds, a feat that would have previously been thought as impossible and surely something we will never see again.

Fisher has pushed Carrington to the limit over the last few years. For a long time Carrington seemed untouchable in the solo events but the Rotorua paddler changed that, beating her on several occasions, both in New Zealand and overseas.

That has forced Carrington, at the end of her career, to find something else, to drag out yet more improvement when she was already seen as the greatest of all time.

“It’s really interesting... you probably don’t realise how much you feel that your identity is wrapped in winning. And until you don’t win, you don’t realise what you’re leaning on,” Carrington told NZME following the race.

“I think it really made me realise that I had to fight to perform this whole week. I had to be super diligent and I guess it just taught me that I have to pay attention to the detail, and turning up, and literally just being able to handle the pressure is a tough thing.”

Fisher deserves tremendous credit and when the dust settles, she should savour her Olympic journey. She has made amazing progress over the last three years and may be seen as the paddler to beat in Los Angeles, as she becomes the lynchpin of the New Zealand team.

Though Carrington did hint that the golden glow she’s currently feeling could spur her on to yet another campaign.

“It’s pretty enticing to continue after this one, so we’ll just have to see. I think I’ll just get home and just see my dog and get grounded.”

Saturday was a day to be celebrated. It was a spine-tingling moment, watching the two black boats line up in adjacent lanes at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

The contest had been eagerly anticipated since Fisher qualified for the Olympics via the Oceania Championships back in February. The expectation went up another level after the two World Cup meets this year, with both of them going under the world’s best time in Szeged.

Csipes loomed as a danger, given she had lowered that mark again in a Hungarian domestic meet, but she couldn’t hold off the unstoppable Carrington in this one.

Conditions were ideal, with barely a ripple on the water and hardly a breath of wind. The stands were packed – with the biggest crowd of the week. There was a large contingent of Kiwi fans draped in black, including many family and friends.

The majority appeared to be aligned with Carrington but there was still a decent section of Fisher support, before New Zealand’s greatest Olympian started the celebrations by clinching her eighth gold medal, level with Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt.
