What the Trip is Like
- 4-6 hours snorkeling
- 3-4 hours sailing
- Occasional kayaking, paddle boarding, and short-moderate hikes
- Day 4: 4-5 hours snorkeling, including 2 hours in an area with extremely strong current, 3-4 hours sailing, and 1 hour hike
Ocean Conditions
The seas are generally calm in Raja Ampat, but unexpected squalls or high winds can create rough ocean conditions at any time. There is a higher chance of rough seas on Days 4 and 6 when our crossing takes place in the open ocean. The remainder of the sailing is in much more protected waters, and sea sickness is typically not a problem.
Medical Attention and Evacuation in Remote Destinations
Our Raja Ampat snorkeling journey takes place in an extremely remote and uninhabited archipelago in the Pacific. In the case of serious illness or injury, medical attention and swift evacuation are not available. Once we sail from Sorong, we are far away from towns and medical facilities. In the case of serious illness or injury, we will make every effort to reach medical facilities as soon as possible, but be aware that it may take the boat days to return to the port of Sorong. If you have health or medical issues of concern, please discuss them with your physician before considering this trip.

"Thank you, Wilderness Travel, for putting together this wonderful experience. Our trip leaders made every minute count. We appreciated all the planning it took to juggle the tides, the winds, and the calendar to make sure we immersed in as many habitats as possible."
"Raja Ampat is not just a snorkeling destination. This is nature at its mind-blowing best. You don't have to settle for watching the Blue Planet on TV, you can live it every day while onboard and then understand why we need to save it."
Honolulu, HI
"A very organized and comfortable way to enjoy an experience in an exotic place we would never visit on our own."
"I was awestruck by the beauty I saw. I felt for the first time in my life that I had been honored to see the world as it was in its beginning. Certainly a life-changing experience."

Lindenhurst, IL
"A truly great trip—one of the best I’ve ever taken."
Forth Worth, TX
"This was the trip of a lifetime for us! Staying on the boat was fantastic. It wasn't camping, but it had some of that rustic, romantic feel—What a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty of Raja Ampat. The snorkeling was unparalleled. We explored two different reefs every day and each was spectacular. The soft coral snorkel was particularly awe-inspiring. I've been snorkeling for many years and have never seen anything like the corals and animals we saw on this trip. The guides were fabulous, pointing out animals and plants I would never have seen on my own. I really enjoyed the company of the other guests as well as the guides and crew. If it weren't so far away, I'd go again next week!"
Mission Viejo, CA
"This was an amazing trip, absolutely the best 12 days I’ve ever experienced."
Santa Fe, NM
"A lifetime experience in this exquisite part of the world, so removed from civilization as we know it."
"This is a truly wonderful snorkeling adventure in a beautiful place with a very experienced guide. It is the trip of a lifetime for people who like to snorkel."

I have snorkeled all over the world and this trip itinerary is truly fabulous with the different sites chosen with a lot of thought and the the safety boats and crew providing impeccable service to all the guests, no matter what their experience."
Arroyo Grande, CA
"Tremendous trip. It met or exceeded all my expectations; I would recommend it very highly. Environmentally, the area visited is of world-wide significance and this value was respected throughout the trip—right down to being alert to unintended minor damage to reefs that might be caused by less skilled snorkelers."
Seattle, WA
"This was a mind-blowing experience for me. I've been a diver for many years and have never seen anything like what we saw on this trip. Other areas in the world where I have dived or snorkeled don't even come close to Raja Ampat."
Danville, CA
"This was a great snorkeling experience. We got to see 22 different reefs—lots of variety—and didn't see any other boats for 8 days—truly amazing."
Sedro Woolley, WA
"All WT trips are good and often great, but superlatives aren't sufficient for this trip."
Berkeley, CA
"We love to snorkel and this is the best in the world. The fish are incredible—a super underwater experience."
East Falmouth, MA
"A superb trip and extremely good value."
"Our trip aboard Shakti was even better than we could have dreamed! The staff were friendly and kind, smiling, and gracious at every turn. Our guide was beyond professional and knowledgeable; she was kind and generous, and shared her love for her subject with us at every turn. We loved being with Andrea! Her partner in guiding, Robert, was also fantastic - they make a great team! The meals prepared for us were excellent and kept us fueled for the journey. And the boat was just fantastic. I can't imagine a better trip!"
Greenville, SC
"Very well organized and executed by a most competent leader. I have participated in years of SCUBA live aboard and land-based trips and Din's demeanor and personal attention beats all. Even though it was billed as a snorkeling trip you come away feeling like it was a lot more."
Los Gatos, CA
"Stunning trip and great to have an experienced trip leader who is flexible and knowledgeable of the conditions of the area to ensure we got the best possible experience."
Christchurch, New Zealand
"I loved this trip. Din, my fellow travelers, crew made it a great experience."
New Haven, CT
"The awareness of just how remote we were and the raw beauty of the surroundings seemed like a dream to me! There were moments on this trip that truly filled my soul."
Sausalito, CA
"The remoteness of the region and the colors of the sea, coral, and fish are beyond words!"
"I've gone on at least 12 group trips, and this was one of the very best. I highly recommend that people go to Raja Ampat soon since the coral is still living and beautiful here, unlike most places in the world. I can truly say that I have never been as relaxed as I was on this journey; it was hard coming back to reality! I can't rave about this trip enough—10 out of 10!"
"There are not enough words to describe the trip. It was just amazing and I loved every minute. Lots of laughter and fun out of the water and the snorkeling was beyond what I expected. I would love to go back."
Noosaville, Australia
"The beauty of Raja Ampat has to be seen to be believed. It’s hard to imagine that there is a place so remote, pristine, and beautiful left on the planet."

Explore the beautiful islands and waters that comprise Raja Ampat
Off the northwest tip of New Guinea in West Papua, the archipelago of Raja Ampat is made up of over 1,500 tiny islands and cays. Lush forested islets, white sandy beaches and turquoise waters makes this one of Indonesia ‘s most idyllic locations.
Raja Ampat translates as Four Kings, and while there are several variations on the tale that gave the archipelago its name, one of the most popular is that of a woman who found seven dragon eggs. Four of the eggs hatched and so were born kings of the four biggest islands in the archipelago.
All the islands are part of the Coral Triangle making the waters of Raja Ampat some of the richest and most diverse in the world. This is a real haven for divers and snorkellers.
Remote and largely uninhabited by humans, the best way to explore this beautiful region is by boat. We can arrange an exclusive private charter with an individual itinerary tailored to your requirements. The rugged, scenic beauty of Raja Ampat make sailing through them, lounging on a spacious deck between dives and enjoying al fresco dining, a rare and very privileged experience.
Go snorkelling in the mangroves or kayaking across the azure waters of Mioskin Bay.
Hike the Wayag archipelago with its picturesque karst formations to achieve an awe-inspiring view of the islands.
Observe protected rare birds on their forested island sanctuaries.
For abundant marine-life and vibrant coral slopes, make sure to visit the famed Kri peninsula.
Visit Arborek Island for a trip to the village of Kampung Wisata to learn about local traditions and culture.

Travel Designer
Raja Ampat is the perfect getaway for underwater exploration, pristine white beaches, and jungle adventures. If I was to describe anywhere as a paradise, it would certainly be the islands that make up Raja Ampat. It's got something for every kind of explorer - gorgeous nature, magnificent diving spots, and local culture for you to learn about.

A UNESCO heritage site full of vibrant marine-life. Made-up of three islands the only way to explore fully is onboard a luxury yacht, stopping off to visit the fearsome Komodo Dragons.
Home to the bustling capital Jakarta, Java is one of the most diverse islands in Indonesia. Visit smouldering volcanoes, exquisite temples and cycle through rice fields and tea plantations.
A quiet, peaceful island with some of Indonesia’s most beautiful beaches. Relaxed and slow paced with an interior of rice fields and fascinating culture.
Explore the Indonesia archipelago on a private, exclusive yacht adventure. Cruise along white sand coastlines punctuated with emerald green jungles and swim with turtles.
Bali, the Island of the Gods is Indonesia’s most famous island. From rugged mountain peaks to lush jungles, magnificent waterfalls and stunning beaches, the island has got something for everyone. When to visit
Although it can be visited all year round, the best time to take a trip to Raja Ampat is between October and April, as it follows a different seasonality to the rest of Indonesia. January is one of the best months to visit Raja Ampat for exclusive yacht explorations, with little rain and balmy days. Calm conditions and low winds are perfect for water activities, both below and above the surface.

Jacada helped us plan the most amazing and seamless honeymoon around Indonesia. I have never used a travel agent before and am usually extremely Type A when it comes to planning my own vacations but I am so thankful I let them take over the planning and scheduling so I actually got to relax on my own vacation. This was our second trip with Jacada, this time 2.5 weeks to Singapore and Indonesia, and it was simply incredible. Our travel designer and concierge, Ellie and Cathy, were both amazing and carefully designed a unique trip tailored to our interests and goals, sprinkling in some creative and thoughtful surprises throughout the trip. The trip culminated in a five-day private…
I have booked several trips with Jacada Travel and they have all been exemplary! My family and I went on a trip to Vietnam, South Korea and Indonesia. The experience was absolutely fantastic. The planning of the activities, hotels and times for rest was impeccable. My children are 8 and 10, and my mom is 63. The choice of accommodations was brilliant, each hotel was unique and could have been an attraction by itself!
We have now taken 3 trips that were planned by Jacada and each one has not only been memorable but exceptional. On our last trip to Indonesia, we had a Guide by the name of Dewa in Bali that constantly went out of way to make our trip special and changed the agenda to meet our desires. I can't say…

Become an Eco-Tourist
Raja Ampat may be known for its spectacular diving and snorkeling , however it also has a unique landscape and a surprising geological history with its more than 100 islands. Over the years, the tectonic plates have collided, displaced and extended, creating a unique landscape , formed by limestone islands which makes exploring this area a true wonder to experience. If you are a nature lover and wish to experience some of the culture and history that surrounds us, then have a look at some of the tours we offer! A visit to Indonesia would not be complete without seeing the Raja Ampat !
This tours are combined with diving or snorkeling, we are flexible and can organize a tour following your request.
FAM ISLANDS; PIANEMO
No visit to Raja Ampat would be complete without visiting the iconic Fam islands. It is an excursion that leaves everyone who visits it speechless, without a doubt an experience that you cannot miss during your stay with us, at Biodiversity. These islands are located in an area of 700 square km in the Pacific Ocean. Through eons and the thrust of waves and currents, accompanied by consistent winds and weather conditions, they have created a mysterious landscape made up of spectacular limestone islands. They are some of the best islands of Indonesia.
Duration: Full Day (8:00-17:00) – Two dives or Snorkel Sites and Lunch and view point-
* We recommend that you bring sunscreen, a cap / hat, sunglasses, a photo / video camera, and cash.
Note: There is a supplementary fee of Euro 60 for this trip (min 4 pax), as it is further away from the usual dive and snorkel sites.
Time to start your trip!
Your journey starts from the Biodiversity Resort at 08:00, followed shortly by an up- close and personal look at Yenbeser and Friwin Villages, as you enter the open expanse of the Dampier Straight. Many migrating species of fish use this straight as a shortcut between Gam and mainland Papua, on their way to other feeding grounds in the Pacific. It is thus not uncommon to see Dolphins, Leaping Manta and Devil Rays, as well as Pilot Whales, while being left speechless by the sheer beauty and striking contrasts of this stunning remote part of our world, commonly known as “Paradise”
Fam Island Group Visible!! Finally
After a pleasant trip of approximately 1 hour 45 minutes we will arrive at our first dive and snorkel site called Fam Slope s. As you descend this slope you will be hypnotized by the beauty of the marine life, which is possible due to the currents passing through that provide a rich source of food for all species. While enjoying the splendor of the reefs, you should always keep a watchful eye into the blue, in case a 5-7 meter Ocean Blanket makes a grand appearance.
You’ll Feel Like Robinson Crusoe
At the surface interval, we stop off at a secluded stretch of deserted beach for our tea, coffee and homemade snacks (it is considered one of the best beaches in Indonesia). Here you can be lucky to see monitor lizards about a meter long walking on the tree branches or on the sand. They are very skittish and will most probably run off when they see you approach. It is the perfect spot to take in the unique landscapes and diversity of the area.
The Best Dive of Your Life
The second dive and snorkel site, Melissa’s Garden , is the most famous and a place where you will see incredible biodiversity and be in awe at the richness of marine life. This place is Mother Nature’s way of teaching us how gardening should be designed. Hard corals create a varied range of colors, within which they house all kinds of marine life; Wobbegong sharks, Crocodile fish, ancestral Giant Clams, Rifle shoals, Tres Tails, Damilian fish among many others. It will leave you breathless!
Time for a lunch Break!
Lunch will be served in a very quiet place, surrounded by large mangroves while you take a walk and observe the young of the Punta Negra Sharks that inhabit the roots of these peculiar mangroves . This is also the perfect place to see the Archer fish skillfully “shooting” water at unsuspecting insects.
Your day will be completed with a climb up 300, well maintained, wooden steps to the iconic Fam Islands view point .The views from the deck are incredible. A set of uninhabited islands with spectacular landscapes of karst cliffs, completely covered in green trees, shrubs and tropical plants, will provide you with that envious holiday memory to take home and show to friends and family. Tropical birds like Parrots, Herons and Frigates fly over the area, while turtles play in the turquoise waters below. In short, you will fall in love with this dream place!
Update Your Social Media Profiles!
After you have returned from the view point it is always good to jump in the cooling water below before jumping on the boat and heading back to the resort . You will arrive around 17:00 and that evening it will be difficult for you to assimilate and understand the magnitude of this amazing landscape. Only when you get home and show your photos to your family and friends, having to defend that there is no photoshop involved, you will realize with a smile that you have experienced something truly unique!
Arborek - West Mansuar - Sawandarek Jetty (Seasonal)
This trip offers you the chance to see two of the top three jetty’ s in the Dampier Strait. It is a full day out filled with fun and excitement.
The dives and Snorkel sites are spectacular and offer you a variety of marine life!
This is a full day tour which includes.
- First Spot: Aborek
- Second Spot : West Mansuar
- Picnic Lunch: Sawandarek Jetty
- Third Spot: Sawandarek Jetty
Duration: Full day (8:00- 17:00), three dives & three dive/snorkel sites
* We recommend that you bring sunscreen, a cap / hat, sunglasses and a photo / video camera
Note: There is a supplement charge of EURO 30 (min 4 pax) for this excursion as it is further away from our usual dive & snorkel sites.
Ready to start an exciting day?
We will leave at 8am from the resort, giving you the chance to wake up to the best Indonesia Sunrise. You will pass the villages of Yenbeser and Friwin, as we cross the Dampier strait. Take on the breath taking scenery and the clear waters as we make our way up the west of gam towards your first dive site.
Kit up and jump in!
This jetty is a photographers dream with thousands of fish found under the jetty such as schooling jacks hunting on the smaller silversides, Soft and hard corals and giant clams, found to the one side of the jetty. It is not an easy dive due to the strong currents you can experience here, but for those with experience it is a spectacular one. Due to the difficulty of this dive we recommend divers have advanced open water and at least 30 dives with experience in currents. Arborek is one of the 3 main Jetties in Raja Ampat
Ready for more excitement?
Just around the corner from Yenbuba is West Mansuar. It is a challenging and deeper dive, but the rewards are justified. Most of the dive is between 25 and 18 meters (the deep part) so we must watch our bottom time closely. The marine life is abundant with larger schools of fish, barracuda, sharks and sweetlips to name a few (the current part). The corals are also very healthy and range from soft to hard corals with fish cleaning stations along the way. Due to the difficulty of this dive we recommend divers have advanced open water and at least 30 dives with experience in currents.
Time to eat
After your two amazing dives, you will be ready for lunch. Lunch will be served at Sawandarek Jetty. Here you can sit and enjoy the fish from the jetty or take a walk around the village.
Bucket list dive
This is a “on the bucket list “must visit jetty because of the diversity you can find all in one area. You start your dive at Sawandarek jetty making your way down to 14m. One the way down you will encounter beautiful soft and hard corals surrounding metal Manta ray structures which have been put in place many years ago for coral conservation. For the turtle lovers you will encounter larger than usual green turtles, Giant clams and large schools of fusiliers and barracuda. It also has a wide variety of macro life.
We will return to the resort around 17:00pm after an adventurous fun filled day of diving and snorkelling.
WEST GAM ISLAND
This trip offers you the chance to see the mangroves that inhabit Raja Ampat, the beautiful breath-taking landscapes of Mansur Island, as well and the unique wonders that each dive site offers. The dive and snorkel sites that have been chosen have a mix of everything from macro to micro as well as spectacular coral gardens. These sites have some of the best snorkelling in Indonesia.
Duration: Full day trip (8:00-17:00)
Includes: Snorkeling or Non-Snorkeling
Places you visit: – First Spot: Mangroves – Second Spot: Aborek Jetty – Third spot: Sawandarek jetty – Picnic Lunch: Aborek – Visit to Aborek village during lunch break
Note: As of 2020 there is a supplementary fee of 40Euros p/p (min 4 pax) for this trip, as it is further away from the usual dive and snorkel sites.
Time to start your trip
We will depart the Resort for 8:00, giving you the chance to wake up to the best Indonesia Sunrise. We will make our way past scenic landscapes of isolated white sandy beaches, with overhanging coconut trees and turquoise waters surrounding krast rocks all while we skirt Gam islands shoreline as we make our way closer to West Gam area.
Time to kit up
Your first dive and snorkel will be at the mangroves. This sites offers a magnificent opportunity to view the roots system of the mangroves which protect most of the juvenile species, as well as corals that grows amongst the roots. You will be able to photograph the corals and the trees all in one photo. You will then descend down the coral slope discovering many of the bigger juvenile species amoung the coral reef. This site has a great deal of Nudi Branches to discover as well as schooling barracudas and sting rays as well as Mantas.
A quick break and back in the water!
Your surface interval will be at one of the beaches in the bay of the mangroves, an excellent change to observe these complex trees from the land.
Your second dive is at Aborek Jetty where you will have the opportunity to discover the giant clams that are found scattered around the area. It is a very popular location to find Nudi Branches and passing Black tip reef sharks. When you start approaching the jetty you will find large schools of reef fish schooling together. There is a wonderful pinnacle that you are able to easily swim around and find many interesting marine life. Fantastic opportunity for wide angel photography.
Lunch is served!
Lunch will be served on Aborek Island, where you can walk around the village or just sit and observe the many beautiful corals and fish just beneath the jetty. This is the perfect spot to relax and prepare yourself for your next dive or snorkel.
Save the best for last!
Your last dive and snorkel site is on Mansuar Island at Sawandarek jetty. This is considered one of the most beautiful jetty’s in Raja Ampat. You can expect to see big green turtles, giant clams, school sand schools of fusiliers, breath taking colourful coral garden and metal manta sculptures where they are growing coral as part of coral conservation. It truly is spectacular and the best way to end off your fun filled day of diving and snorkelling.
Manta Sandy (Seasonal)
This is an exciting excursion where you can encounter the spectacular Manta Rays, including Mobula Mantas, Oceanic Mantas & Black Mantas. They come to this cleaning station year after year to be dewormed. It is one of the few places you can come face to face with these majestic giants.
Duration: Half day (8:00- 12:30), two dives & two snorkel sites
* We recommend that you bring sunscreen, a cap / hat, sunglasses and a photo / video camera.
Note: There is a supplement charge of Euro 25 (min 4 pax) for this excursion, as it is further away from our usual dive & snorkel sites.
Lets start your trip
We will leave at 8am from the resort, giving you the chance to wake up to the best Indonesia Sunrise. You will pass the villages of Yenbeser and Friwin, as we cross the Strait of Dampier. It is here, where during the months of October to April a large number of these magnificent specimens gather to feed on the abundant plankton of these waters. They also go to the “cleaning stations” where they stop briefly to allow the Wrasses to clean them of all the parasites that have accumulated during their long migrations.
Time to be amazed!
Your first dive/snorkel site will be at Manta ridge. This is a more exciting dive as you will need to use a reef hook to hook onto rock. The current is usually very strong, which is good because this is what the Mantas love. You will find yourself hooked up to the rocks, floating over the beautiful diversity of coral and marine life and all of a sudden a Manta will effortlessly float over the top of your head and sit just in front of you, giving you that perfect camera shot!
Snorkelers will jump off the boat after all divers are in the water, for safety reasons. You will be on the surface close to the cleaning station, swimming just above the Mantas, however besides being above the cleaning station you can also swim along the reef where you can encounter the Mantas breaching the surface as well as making their way to the cleaning station. Again keep your distance and do not chase them, they will come to you if they wish. It is an amazing view to have of the mantas from the surface and sometimes you will even see more than what the divers see.
Break time and then back to the magic!
Your surface interval will be on Aborek Island, or if the tides are correct, on a sand bank where you can have some tea, coffee and snacks.
Your second dive will be Manta Sandy where you will descend to 16m. Divers will wait behind some rocks for these elegant creatures to emerge from the blue. On a lucky day, we have come to see 20 Manta Rays, playing and circling around the cleaning stations, resembling a busy airstrip, where each Manta ray patiently waits its turn to be dewormed. We have a strict policy of not getting too close to them, as they are easily scared and will leave the area, not returning for a long time. You will wait for about an hour observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
Snorkelers will be on the surface close to the cleaning station swimming just above the Mantas. They have a really different view and have been known to spot more than the divers. You also have the benefit of exploring the reef more as the mantas move about below you.
A memorable return
We will return to the resort around 1pm, where you will talk of your mantas stories to fellow guests over a delicious lunch, and most probably spend the rest of the afternoon remembering your unforgettable lived experience.
The passage is a narrow channel that separates Waigeo Island from Gam Island. It is an absolute pleasure for the senses, with breath taking landscapes, crystal calm waters and enchanting sunsets, a true wonder of nature. It boasts some of the best beaches in Indonesia and we like to think some of the beast islands of Indonesia.
Duration: Half day (15.30 – 18.00), cruise though The Passage and break at the homestay.
Note: The price of this tour is 35Euros (min 4 pax).
The tour leaves from our jetty for 15:15. You’ll cruise through Kabui Bay, marveling at the bays, mangroves, towering karst limestone cliffs and the turquoise waters that edge Gam Island. You will pass a traditional fishing village, where all the houses are built on stilts above the water. It is a very picturesque moment, which will give you a small insight into the culture of this area. You will then enter the passage through a maze of islets and make your way through to the other side. This is the magical moment when you will drift silently through the passage with the hills of both islands on either side of you. Take this time to listen to the sounds of the forest and gaze in to the turquoise waters; it really is a humbling experience.
On your way back you will stop at an isolated homestay at the top of Kabui Bay with a unique view of the entrance to the passage, for a coffee and homemade snack. Once your sweet tooth has been satisfied you’ll head south back through Kabui Bay just in time to see the yellow, orange and pinks of the setting sun as it sinks behind Gam Island. You’ll return to the resort at around 18:30.
For this tour you will be following the footsteps of the well-known biologist Alfred Russel Wallace, who navigated through this channel in 1860 describing it as, “The canal entrance-which resembles a small river-is surrounded by steep rocks, after a 2km winding route it emerges in a gulf studded with numerous small rocky islands… forming one of the most picturesque landscapes you have ever seen.” Even today, it closely resembles its description, giving you a sense of adventure and awe as you drift silently through the passage taking in all the sounds and sites that engulf you.

Raja Ampat: a quick guide to visiting the idyllic Papuan archipelago
May 8, 2017 • 5 min read
Picture a tropical archipelago of steep, jungle-covered islands, glittering white-sand beaches, hidden lagoons and luminous turquoise waters. Now throw in pristine coral reefs inhabited by clouds of tie-dyed fish. Place it in a remote corner of Indonesia largely unknown to foreign tourists, and you end up with the Raja Ampat islands: the ultimate tropical paradise.
It's a big call, but the collection of 1500-odd islands and islets scattered off the northwest tip of Indonesian Papua that comprise Raja Ampat is truly one of Southeast Asia's most beautiful archipelagos. If that isn't a good enough reason to put Raja Ampat on your must-visit list then consider the diving, which many authorities on the matter claim is among the world's best.
Little-known outside hardcore off-the-beaten-track travel circles until the last few years, Raja Ampat’s huge, largely pristine coral reef systems and staggering marine diversity are a diver’s dream. Described by scientists as a 'species factory', this region nestled in the heart of the Coral Triangle is home to more than 10 times the number of hard coral species found in the Caribbean.
Raja Ampat is a year-round destination, although many diving outfits cease operations between July and September, when the usually calm seas can get quite rough. For the calmest waters and best visibility for diving, aim for a visit between November and March. The Raja Ampat region receives the heaviest rain from May to October, which can also make jungle walks treacherous.
Diving and snorkelling
There are over 200 pristine diving sites in Raja Ampat where just sticking your head under the water means you'll be dazzled by a rainbow of luminous fish and corals. On a single dive you can expect to get up close with huge manta rays and giant clams, gape at schools of barracuda, fusiliers and parrotfish, peer at tiny pygmy seahorses and multicoloured nudibranchs, and, with luck, spot wobbegong and epaulette (walking) sharks, with marine topography varying from vertical walls and pinnacles to reef flats and underwater ridges. Snorkellers can observe many of these species from above, too, with many reefs easily accessible from the beach.
Raja Ampat is generally better suited to advanced divers, and is thus not exactly a learn-to-dive hot spot. There are, however, some dive spots suitable for relative novices. Most dives are drift dives, which comes with a warning: the currents that whip you along the edge of the reefs can be very strong. Proof of valid insurance and dive cards will be required at reputable dive operators. Most places provide all diving equipment.
Despite the general fishy abundance, some of Raja Ampat's reefs are more interesting than others. At Manta Sandy , between Mansuar and Arborek islands, you'll find masses of huge manta rays, some with wingspans over 5m, waiting above large coral heads to be cleaned by small wrasses. The Sardine Reef , 4km northeast of Pulau Kri, slopes down to 33m, and is home to so many fish that it can get quite dark! The fish-and-coral combination here has made it popular among underwater photographers. And despite the recent damage to coral caused by a cruise ship running aground, the waters off Pulau Kri offer some of the most celebrated dive spots. Schools of barracuda, jackfish, batfish and snapper coexist here with small reef fish, rays, sharks, turtles and groupers, and the undamaged coral is out-of-this-world beautiful.
Beyond the reef
Raja Ampat isn’t just for divers. The forested islands are home to two bird-of-paradise species (the red and the Wilson's, which can both be spotted on Waigeo and Batanta islands), along with a realm of lizards, snakes, tortoises, opossums and other birdlife. Almost every dive lodge and homestay can arrange pre-dawn tours that will take you to forest hideouts overlooking bird-of-paradise 'concert arenas'. Most homestays can also organise visits to local villages, pearl farms and cave systems, as well as arrange hiking guides.
Where to stay
Accommodation in Raja Ampat can be neatly divided into three categories. For beach bums happy to loll under the palms and engage in a bit of lazy snorkelling, the growing number of homestays are ideal – Pulau Kri and Pulau Gam have particularly rich pickings. Many homestays also offer diving, but safety standards and equipment maintenance can be questionable.
For serious divers, there are a dozen-odd quality dedicated dive resorts in the region which generally offer one- to two-week packages including transfers, meals and a couple of dives per day. Top picks include Raja Ampat Biodiversity ( rajaampatbiodiversity.com ) and Kri Eco Resort (papua-diving.com/kri-eco-resort) . Finally, there are liveaboard dive boats, such as Grand Komodo ( komodoalordive.com ), which are essentially floating dive resorts which sail from one coral reef to the next. Some itineraries combine Raja Ampat with the Banda Islands off neighbouring Maluku .
How to get there
The nearest major airport to the Raja Ampat islands is in the mainland city of Sorong . There are flights here from the likes of Jakarta , Pulau Ambon (Maluku), Jayapura (Papua), Manado and Makassar ( Sulawesi ). From Sorong it’s a short ferry ride to Waisai, on the island of Waigeo, where homestay operators will pick you up. Most top-end dive resorts and liveaboards will pick you up from Sorong.
Getting to and from most places to stay in Raja Ampat requires using a speed boat transfer (all accommodation options offer this service), which requires a bit of planning; book accommodation and transfers in advance. Note that prices (for everything) are considerably higher than in Java, Bali, Sumatra and other more mainstream Indonesian tourism destinations.

Snorkeling Raja Ampat: Heart of the Coral Triangle!
Day 1: Jakarta / Sheraton Jakarta Soekarno Hatta Airport Meals provided: D Meet in Jakarta, Indonesia at our group hotel for the tour orientation and welcome dinner. As is often the case with our internal flight, we will depart for Sorong in the late evening, thus our ‘overnight’ will be in transit to Sorong. Overnight Sheraton Jakarta.
Day 2: Sorong / Gaia Love / Waisai Meals provided: B,L,D Fly to Sorong and transfer to our live-aboard boat, the Gaia Love. Boat orientation and lunch before we depart for our snorkeling adventure into the islands. While we do not plan to have the chance to snorkel today, if time and weather permits, we will give it our best. Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 3: Penemu / Fam Islands Meals provided: B,L,D The Fam islands, Penemu being the largest, offer us the chance to drift snorkel along incredibly healthy, colorful walls where huge schools of fusiliers, unicornfishes, surgeonfishes, snappers, rabbitfishes, and sweetlips crowd along the edges while the current passes by. In the afternoon, we will snorkel in a quiet lagoon where we can lazily float above fields of delicate branching corals, some that can only be found in this specific habitat! Penemu Island is also home to some of the most stunning island scenery in Raja Ampat. We’ll have a chance to take a dinghy tour through the network rock islands and finish the tour with the chance to walk up 400 stairs for the ultimate in panoramic views! Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 4 – 7: Alyui Bay Wayag Meals provided: B,L,D Ajyui Bay is one of the premier destinations in Raja Ampat. The bay possesses a variety of habitats including robust passages where brisk water movement supports a dazzling amount of bizarre and colorful life along the shallow edges of the islands, as well as protected reefs in private lagoons where a mixture of juvenile and adult reef fishes play amongst the tangle of staghorn coral thickets. We’ll also snorkel sea grass and sand flats to look for rare critters such as waspish and tasseled wobbegongs.
To the north of Alyui Bay is Wayag, a remote island archipelago otherwise knowns as paradise. The convoluted network of picture-prefect, jungle-capped limestone islands create narrow passages, hidden lagoons, and shallow platform reefs. Our snorkels range from exposed seawards reefs to sheltered coral gardens and mangroves. Dinghy tours around Wayag rank among the best on the planet! We will meander our way through intimate passages made by towering limestone islands and stop off to put our feet in pure white sand before returning to our gorgeous moorage within the islands. Please note, visiting Wayag is weather dependent. Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 8: Pef / Secret Bay Meals provided: B,L,D The combination of limestone and mangrove islands in the Pef island group create magnificent shallow habitats that often possess a large diversity of sponges and sea fans. This is easily the best place to see the spot-tail blennny, marvel at enormous sponges (both fan and barrel), and catch a glimpse of a ray or juvenile shark as they swim among the mangroves in the shallows. Secret Bay is a drift snorkel that begins at the mouth of channel and ends in an intimate bay. Along the way, we’ll get whisked by huge fields of purple and orange soft corals and sea fans! We will also tour the bay via dinghies to look for and hear birds and enjoy the scenery, the tides will determine our timing. Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 9: Yangeffo / Gam Meals provided: B,L,D The tiny mangrove islands of Yangeffo are separated from the main island of Gam by little more than a 75m-wide channel. Normally, mangrove islands would be fairly turbid and, as such, lack high coral abundance and diversity, but the channel focuses strong water flow that flushes the area of sediment. This results in clear-water mangroves where a huge number of corals use the prop roots of mangroves as substrate to grow upon. The clash of ‘habitats’ makes for amazing snorkeling opportunities! We will snorkel both sides of the channel, especially to take advantage of the reef that extends from Gam. Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 10: Mansuar / Dampier Strait Meals provided: B,L,D Dampier Strait is where the big fish are found! The seaward reefs along Kri and Mansuar that are simply some of the best Raja Ampat has to offer. Huge schools of snapper, bumphead parrotfish, barracudas, unicornfishes, plus the thousands of reef fishes make this a must-do for fish-loving snorkelers. Look for sharks, turtles, and rays as they are common sightings as well. We’ll spend time along the jetty where current-exposed, weathered pilings act as substrate for forests of colorful sea fans. Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 11: Batanta Meals provided: B,L,D Across Dampier Strait to the south, is the lush, volcanic island of Batanta. The shallow coral gardens around Batanta contain a mind-blowing diversity of hard and soft corals in every shape and color imaginable. Schools of fish number in the thousands and if we look closely out into the blue, a manta ray or dugong may be swimming by! Overnight Gaia Love.
Day 12: Sorong / Jakarta / Sheraton Jakarta Soekarno Hatta Airport Meals provided: B,L,D Disembark for our connection to Jakarta. Check in to our group hotel. Farewell dinner at the hotel. Overnight Sheraton Jakarta.
Day 13: International flights or extensions Meals provided: B
*For our Dec, 2024 departure we have one additional day in Raja Ampat. We will use this to take advantage of other stunning sites in Raja Ampat such as Wofo, Frewinbanda, south Batanta or stay a bit longer in the incredible waters of Alyui Bay.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Raja Ampat straddles the Equator and, as an equatorial island archipelago, weather year round is hot and humid. Rain showers often happen in the early morning or late afternoon. Daytime temperatures hover around 86º F (30º C) and do not fall much at night. Water temperatures average around 82º F (28º C), though cooler temperatures may occur if persistent rains cause a thin layer of cool freshwater on the surface. Currents around Misool are generally light but may be strong at specific sites. While we plan our snorkel session around the slack tides, we also have several sites where having water movement is an advantage. These drift snorkels allow us to cover large tracks of reef without having to swim too hard. Our snorkel sessions are 100% boat supported and two dinghies will be there at all times to assist anyone for whatever reason.
Most of the islands are steep and rugged with small pocket beaches, but we will have a chance to hike to a summit in the island group of Fam. The stairs are well established and require nothing more than comfortable shoes or sandals. We will also have several scenic dinghy tours scheduled during our time in Raja Ampat.
Please read more about our daily schedule .
WHAT TO BRING
The following list is a suggestion of things to bring and applies to almost all our trips. Specific items on a particular departure will be noted on the departure information.
-A good fitting mask, snorkel, and set of fins. If your equipment is brand new, please try it out in the pool. Determining the fit and function of your equipment in the pool includes doing several laps with all your equipment on. Doing several snorkel dives is also very beneficial. It is also important to clean your new equipment, especially your mask. Cleaning procedures for your mask include light scrubbing with toothpaste or dishwasher soap to remove the layer of silicon used to preserve the mask during shipping. Clean both sides of the mask. Doing this greatly reduces the chances of having your mask fog. Not doing this, even when using mask de-fogger, usually results in a fogged mask.
-A wetsuit, rash guard, diveskin, or any type of clothing that can be used for thermal and/or protection from the sun. We suggest bringing a full 3mm wetsuit and some type of core insulation like a vest or shirt made of 1 – 2 mm neoprene (e.g., Lavacore or Sharkskin shirts or vests) . These items will not only provide thermal protection but protection from the sun as well. For those who feel that a 3mm suit may be too warm, please consider a full body skin or rash guard to ensure protection from the sun. With regards to thermal protection, remember the saying: It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have. One that note…
-Head protection in the form of a wetsuit hood, a cap, or even a bandana. Anything that can keep the sun off your head is extremely important. It is the most exposed part of our bodies when we are floating on the surface.
-Underwater flashlight on departures with a planned night snorkel
-Biodegradable sunscreen lotion. Sunscreen lotions can be harmful and even kill tiny larvae (baby marine life). It is fine to wear on land, but we highly discourage the use of sunscreen lotions in the water. A full wetsuit or dive skin will protect one from the sun much better than lotions and provide thermal protection. It is truly a win-win for everyone and the marine environment.
-Casual, lightweight, tropical clothing -Sunglasses (and a spare in case you lose your main pair) -Comfortable footwear such as active sandals (Teva, Keen, Merrell, etc.) -Hats. We cannot stress the importance of a hat in the tropics! -All our boats provide items like shampoo, soap, towels, etc. We bring this up because these items represent added weight or may leak.
Other items to consider: -Lightweight rainwear to protect from the occasional afternoon shower -Binoculars

Why tourists are flocking to these little-known islands
- Raja Ampat is 'the last paradise' for jaded travellers, and it's only hours from Bali
- READ MORE: The Australian island that's just like Hawaii with 'magical' vistas
A secret archipelago with aquamarine water in Indonesia is the new 'must-visit' tropical destination for Aussies - and it's been dubbed 'heaven on earth' by visitors.
Raja Ampat, the 'last paradise' in the country's northwest, is well off the beaten track but just a three hour flight or seven day ferry ride from the crowded sands of Bali.
The little known location is a lush, jungle covered utopia of 1,500 islands with pure white sands and a vibrant coral reef that makes for some of the world's best diving.
Domi and Thomas, of 2troubletravelers, shared the hidden island paradise that less than one per cent of all tourists to Indonesia will ever reach.
'All you need to do is fly to Sorong International Airport, then take a ferry to Waisai Harbour and ask your homestay to pick you up there,' they said.
'It's the place with turquoise water, white sandy beaches, stunning views and an incredible underwater world.'
The untouched beauty of one of the world's 'last wild places' has been likened by some to the stunning fictional moon-world of Pandora in the Avatar films.
Guests visiting the faraway islands have called them the best place 'in the universe' and raved about the snorkelling, fishing and 'incredible' bird watching on offer.
Travellers also hire boats to island hop and explore hidden lagoons and relax on protected beaches, but can't expect quite the same conveniences as Bali.
However, the 'insanely beautiful' Kri Island has limited running water and electricity.
There are no ATMs or credit card machines and you will need to bring all of your spending money in cash and arrange accommodation ahead through a home stay.
Pam Island boasts 'magical' crystalline waters, picture perfect beaches and recreational sports that keep visitors coming back more.
'The diving was absolutely mind blowing. The people are very kind and friendly....it was just an incredible experience,' one said.
'Definitely adding this to our bucket list,' another agreed.
Some complained that the remote location made it 'super expensive' for Indonesians to visit Raja Ampat, even though it's relatively close to Bali.
First time visitors to the area are advised to stay for a week or longer and while there are many budget options available, a few have said that the visit can be pricey when taking into account food and accommodation.
Travellers have insisted that the remoteness of the islands are what sets them apart.
'Pristine islands with dense forests, may it stay that way. Unspoilt and protected. Not easy to reach, but that's okay,' one said.
'I find that the hardest places to get to are usually the most worth it,' another added.
