About New South Wales
New South Wales (abbreviated NSW) is the most populous (7.5Million) and the fifth largest of the 8 Australian States and Territories accounting for 10.4% of Australia’s landmass. It borders Queensland to the north, Victoria to the south and South Australia to the west. The Australian Capital Territory is an enclave within NSW. The state of New South Wales is sometimes referred to as the “First State” or “Premier State.”
Its capital city, Sydney, is the home of Australia's most recognised icons - the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Sydney should not be confused as the capital of Australia, which is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory, 280 km south-west of Sydney.
There are 9 tourism regions in NSW each with their own character and peculiarities and all embracing bicycle tourism.
The Snowy Mountains host the L’Étape Australia by le Tour de France each December.
What is the best season to visit New South Wales?
New South Wales is a large state and as such has as a very varied climate. Some regions have four distinct seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter) others only have two.
Australia's seasons are the opposite to the northern hemisphere. December to February is summer; March to May is autumn (fall); June to August is winter; and September to November is spring.
A very useful tool for working out the best time to go bicycle touring in the different regions of New South Wales is the climate zone model defined by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) . Using climate data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology the ABCB has divided Australia into 8 climate zones of differing climatic characteristics.
The different climate zone boundaries are aligned to the NSW local government boundaries. The planning authorities use the zones to determine the heating, cooling and insulation requirements for new buildings.
New South Wales’ tourism regions are also defined by local government boundaries so the climate zone model can easily be used to inform your decisions about the best time for your cycling tour in New South Wales.
To assist with the planning for your bike ride we have matched the climate zones with each of New South Wales’ tourism regions.
Climate Zone map of New South Wales and Tourism Region map of New South Wales
Zone 2 – Sub-Tropical: Distinct summer and winter seasons. Hot to very hot humid summers, mild winters - a definite ‘dry season’. Moderate to low daily temperature range which can vary significantly between regions e.g. inland to coastal.
Zone 4 – Arid: Distinct seasons with low humidity all year round. Extremely hot dry summers, cool winters. Summers commonly have hot, dry winds; winters have cold dry winds. Extreme heat in summer can exceed human comfort range. Low rainfall.
Zone 5 – Warm Temperate: Four distinct seasons, mild winters with low humidity, hot to very hot summers with moderate humidity. Extreme heat in summer and cold in winter can exceed human comfort range. Spring and autumn are ideal for human comfort.
Zone 6 – Mild Temperate: Four distinct seasons, mild to cool winters with low humidity, hot to very hot summers with moderate humidity. Spring and autumn are ideal for human comfort. Heat in summer and cold in winter can exceed human comfort range.
Zone 7 – Cool Temperate: Four distinct seasons, cold to very cold winters with majority of rainfall, hot dry summers. Comfortable spring and autumn conditions. Low humidity. High summer temperatures may exceed human comfort range. Winter can fall short of human comfort range
Zone 8 – Alpine: Four distinct seasons, cold to very cold winters with majority of rainfall and some snowfall. Winter can fall short of human comfort range. Warm to hot, dry summers. Variable spring and autumn conditions. Low humidity.
The key is to time your cycling tour so that you are taking full advantage of the seasonal variations across the state. For example:
- The perfect time for a bike ride through Outback NSW and the North Coast is between May and August when the Snowy Mountains are covered in snow.
- June to August is Truffle Festival time near Canberra offering an opportunity to indulge the senses on a relaxed winter cycling tour. We suggest riding only between 10am and 3pm when the sun is at its warmest.
Summer brings an increased likelihood of extreme heat waves where very hot days are followed by hot nights making it hard for your body to cool down. Even fit and healthy people can become very ill during these periods, therefore, if you are on a cycling tour you should avoid strenuous activity during times of extreme heat. If untreated, heat illness can lead to the more serious and potentially life-threatening condition of heat stroke. Heatwaves should not be underestimated as they cause more deaths in Australia than any other natural hazard.
All sporting organisations in Australia have hot weather guidelines that they use to determine if a sporting activity needs to be modified or cancelled during periods of hot weather.
It is not uncommon for the Tour Down Under to shorten its competitive stages and cancel the community rides during heatwave conditions .
When is the Bush Fire Danger period?
In New South Wales summer also brings an increased risk of bush fires. If you are planning a bike ride during the bush fire season it is important that you monitor the Fire Danger Rating each day. This will help you assess your level of bush fire risk so you can plan what to do if a fire was to start near you. It is important to understand that the Fire Danger Rating IS NOT a predictor of how likely a bush fire is to occur but an indicator of how dangerous a bush fire may be if it does occur.
Australians ride and drive on the LEFT SIDE of two-way roads.
Under the Australian Road Rules a bicycle is considered a vehicle and as such cyclists have the same responsibilities and rights as other road users. Some road rules are specific to bicycles and these vary between the states.
An explanation of the road rules and how they apply to cyclists in New South Wales can be found here .

South Coast Cycle Tourism Set to Explode
The Southern Highlands, the Illawarra and the South Coast are all noted increased activity for bike lovers over the summer period. These regions are looking forward to an exciting 2024!
Mountain Biking
The tourism activation from mountain biking is proving highly advantageous for the South Coast. There is the recently-opened Gravity Eden MTB park, and the well-established mountain bike terrain in and around Tathra and Narooma. With a mountain bike park in Mogo (near Batemans Bay) coming soon, the South Coast is becoming a destination of choice for mountain bike lovers. Add in the first stage of the Illawarra Escarpment MTB network, boasting more than 40km of world class trails, to be launched this spring (with a second stage to follow in the ensuing 12 months) and we have a remarkable series of facilities to choose from.
Road Riders
But the road riders haven't been forgotten either. Fred David, founder of Cycle Tours NSW is gearing up for an exciting and busy time in the Illawarra and the Southern Highlands. “With our Southern Highlands Escape* happening on 10-12 May, we are venturing back into the organised tour market. We really expected it to boom after the 2024 winter,” says Fred. “People want an immersive experience that is well catered for in beautiful surrounds with people who know their stuff. We’ve teamed up with the Snake Creek Cattle Company to offer quality accommodation and a 'paddock-to-plate' experience in and around the remarkable back roads of the Southern Highlands to provide a money-can’t-buy experience. And the stunning coastline of the Illawarra will be our next venture,” said Fred.
Snake Creek Cattle Company
And why does the Snake Creek Cattle Company want to be associated with cycling? Raschelle Osborne, Marketing Manager with the company, thinks it just makes sense. “We have a unique product in a beautiful part of the world, share the same vision as Cycle Tours NSW and are keen to expand our tribe to include the cycling community,” says Raschelle. “We are developing our own beer products catered to the cycling market and are already established in the equestrian and beef hospitality scene. There is definitely a market for cycling in this region”
Sea Otter Challenge
Mark Emerton (Emo) from Elite Energy, usually renowned for their Triathlon events (the Husky Triathlon recently attracted over 6000 people to Jervis Bay) has secured the Australian rights to the Sea Otter Challenge that will be conducted out of Mogo MTB Park, currently under construction. “The Sea Otter Challenge – now being run in the US, Canada and Europe – brings together traders, recreational riders and racers in a multi-day format from road and MTB and will be a great cycle-tourism attracter in 2024-25,” says Emo. “It’s just another reason to come to the most beautiful part of the world on your bike!” said the parochial Emerton.
Cycle tourism is indeed about to explode south of the metropolitan area of Sydney!

Tour of Britain Women: Lizzie Deignan 'grateful' as Wales to host first two stages of 2024 tour
- Published 3 days ago
The Women's Tour of Britain will return to Wales
Britain's Lizzie Deignan says she is grateful the Tour of Britain Women has returned "against the odds" as British Cycling revealed the route.
Wales will host the first two stages of the 2024 race, which starts on 6 June.
The first edition under its new name - it was previously known solely as the Women's Tour - will begin in Welshpool, with stage one ending in Llandudno.
"I'm really grateful to the people who have made it happen against he odds," said Lidl-Trek's former winner Deignan.
"Hard work has gone on behind the scenes to pull this event off. Sometimes it's underestimated how much it takes to put on a race," the 35-year-old added.
The Women's Tour was cancelled in 2023 after organisers failed to find the funding required for the race.
The world's top female riders and teams will race through Wrexham on day two as the rebranded event returns this year.
The tour will then move on to Warrington before concluding in Greater Manchester on Sunday, 9 June.
Deignan added: "People in the UK are brilliant sports fans and there's this sense of excitement and thrill at being able to be part of a spectacle like a bike race - and it's exciting to be able watch at the side of road and to be in centre of that is not something I take for granted."
Jon Dutton, chief executive of British Cycling, said: "While there is still a great deal of work to do, today is another important milestone in our journey and reflective of the enormous goodwill and support which major road cycling events continue to enjoy.
"Our primary focus has been to deliver a safe and competitive race in 2024, but we remain every bit as determined to harness the race's spotlight to make a real impact in the communities which it touches, and know that is a vision which resonates strongly in conversations with prospective commercial partners and hosts."
The four stages include varying terrain, with the first stage beginning in mid-Wales before riders head to Llandudno on the north coast.
Starting and ending in Wrexham on day two, riders will take on the challenging climbs in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley.
They will then cross the border to begin and end stage three in Warrington, a flatter route which will favour the sprinters.
British Cycling take on organising Tour of Britain races for men and women
The fourth and final day sees riders depart from National Cycling Centre, the home of British Cycling, before finishing the tour in Leigh.
Rod Ellingworth, Tour of Britain race director, said: "It's been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year's Tour of Britain Women.
"The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I'm sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout."
Tour of Britain Women 2024:
Stage 1 - Thursday 6 June 2024: Welshpool to Llandudno
Stage 2 - Friday 7 June 2024: Wrexham
Stage 3 - Saturday 8 June 2024: Warrington
