Back to base camp

The trek back down is the same way, even though it may feel like an entirely new place in the sunlight. The drop is quite steep and it might feel more difficult to descent than it was to climb. Take care on each step as you may easily slip down the rocks. The endpoint will be where you began the trek, the Papagni Temple. Note that the guides may not accompany you on the way back. Most travel agents provide pick up and drop, so you will be given time to meet up at the starting point.

Trekking Under the Stars: Skandagiri Night Trek (2024)

Experience the thrill of Trekking Under the Stars with our Skandagiri Night Trek adventure. Embark on a journey into the darkness as you ascend the rugged terrain of Skandagiri Hills under the shimmering canopy of stars.

Every adventurer in Bangalore is well acquainted with the exhilarating night trek to Skandagiri Peak. Renowned as a premier trekking spot, it is a cherished escape for locals seeking weekend thrills. My recent visit marked my second journey to Skandagiri, both occasions filled with the excitement of night trekking.

Though technically labelled a hike, the everyday usage in India often refers to such trails as treks, hence my occasional use of the term throughout this recount.

About Skandagiri betta

Standing proudly at approximately 4430 feet, Skandagiri Betta emerges as a beloved trekking hotspot near Bangalore . Dubbed Kalavara Durga Betta, this natural marvel rests within the scenic expanse of the Chikkaballapura district, a mere 60 kilometres away from the bustling city of Bangalore.

Among the cluster of five prominent hills in Chikkaballapura, collectively known as the Panchagiri, Skandagiri holds its place alongside Nandi Giri (Nandi Hill), Chandra Giri, Brahma Giri, and Hema Giri. While the allure of Skandagiri beckons adventurers to its slopes, a day trip to Nandi Hills from Bangalore remains an equally popular pursuit among locals, adding to the region’s vibrant outdoor appeal.

Renowned for its breathtaking sunrise vistas, the hill attracts night trekkers eager to witness nature’s spectacle unfold. Offering panoramic views of Muddenahalli Village and Nandi Hill, Skandagiri’s allure is undeniable. However, its fame comes at a price—the trail remains bustling with activity at all hours. Commencing as early as 4 AM, the initial trekking groups aim to conquer the summit by 6 AM, just in time to greet the sun’s majestic ascent.

At the pinnacle, you’ll discover a stone temple honouring a Hindu deity, accompanied by remnants of an ancient fort. Honouring the site’s religious sanctity by removing your shoes before entering the temple premises is essential. Respecting these sacred beliefs adds reverence to your trekking experience and ensures harmony with the spiritual essence of the surroundings.

While the trail remains accessible year-round, it’s prudent to steer clear during rainy seasons when the rocks and boulders turn treacherously slippery. Opting for a morning trek is advisable, as the rising temperatures throughout the day can make the journey arduous and uncomfortable.

How to Get to Skandagiri Base?

The trek commences at the forest checkpoint in Kalawara village, approximately 60 kilometres from Bangalore city. Accessible via a road journey of about 1 hour and 20 minutes, heading towards the airport, Kalawara (also spelled as Kalavara) village serves as the gateway to this adventure. Ample parking facilities are available at the Papagni temple in Kalawara village, although it’s worth noting the presence of numerous monkeys around the temple premises.

While some concerns about locals attempting to puncture car tyres have been voiced, it’s reassuring to observe the considerable number of cars and bikes safely parked in the lot, indicating a prevalent sense of security among visitors.

By Public Transport

The closest bus and train stops to Skandagiri are located in Chikkaballapura. Regular bus and train services operate between Majestic in Bangalore and Chikkaballapura, offering convenient transportation options. From the bus or train stops in Chikkaballapura, travellers can easily hire an auto-rickshaw to reach Papagni temple, approximately 3 kilometres away.

For bus schedules and bookings, please visit the KSRTC website. For train timings and reservations, kindly refer to the IRCTC website. These online resources provide up-to-date information to facilitate your journey planning.

Statistics of the Skandagiri Night Trek

The Skandagiri trek spans 8 kilometres round trip and is classified as Hard grade. This rating stems from the challenging nature of the ascent, with the entire 4-kilometre stretch to the peak characterized by steep terrain and a few boulders necessitating climbing. Expect 2 to 3 hours for the one-way journey to the summit.

  • Starting and Finishing Points : Forest checkpoint. The forest checkpoint is just 800 metres from the Papagni temple in Kalawara village.
  • Total Distance : 8 kilometres return.
  • Time Taken : 2 to 3 hours one way.
  • Grade : Hard.

Trekkers embark on this exhilarating adventure amid nature’s splendour, starting and finishing at the forest checkpoint, conveniently situated just 800 meters from the Papagni temple in Kalawara village. Prepare for a rigorous yet rewarding trekking experience amidst Skandagiri’s rugged landscape.

Trekking Agency

My return to the peak marked my second ascent along this trail. My initial trek, undertaken with friends many years ago, predated the trail’s commercialization and the requirement for permits.

Today, securing permission from forest officials is a prerequisite for embarking on this journey, with the first batch setting off at 4 AM. On this occasion, I opted to join the expedition organized by Plan the Unplanned , who meticulously coordinated the entire trip from Bangalore. Priced at INR 1448, the package included transportation to and from Bangalore, ensuring a hassle-free experience. The trek leads were exceedingly amicable, adding a delightful touch to the adventure.

While a trekking agency facilitated my second trek, tackling the trail independently remains feasible. Permits, obtained online for INR 300 per person, grant access to the straightforward path devoid of complexities requiring guidance. However, should assistance be desired, local guides are readily available at the checkpoint, offering their expertise for hire.

Important Information

  • For those embarking on this trail independently, securing forest permission online before reaching the starting point is essential, as only 200 trekkers are permitted daily.
  • Ensure you carry a valid photo identification (hard or soft copy).
  • Opt for comfortable and sturdy footwear to navigate the potentially slippery terrain.
  • Pack a small daypack and include extra socks for added comfort.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the trek by carrying at least 2 litres of drinking water.
  • Don’t forget to bring small snacks to fuel your journey and enjoy at the peak.
  • Pack a first aid kit and a jacket to prepare for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Expect crowds on the trail and at the peak, and exercise patience and respect for fellow trekkers.
  • Beware of monkeys at the Papagni temple in Kalawara village; refrain from feeding them.
  • Respect the environment by disposing of garbage properly. Carry your trash with you and dispose of it in designated bins.
  • Toilet facilities are available at the base of the trek.
  • While no shops are along the trail or peak, you may encounter a tender coconut vendor selling biscuits.
  • Exercise caution on the trail by maintaining a slow and alert pace. Take small steps and avoid rushing. Safety should always be a priority.

Is Skandagiri Night Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

The Skandagiri trekking trail offers a safe environment for solo female trekkers, thanks to its straightforward path leading to the peak and clear markings. However, having a trekking buddy is advisable, particularly considering the presence of rocks and slippery sections that may pose challenges.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

The journey to Kalawara village can also feel isolated and daunting, especially at night. Having a companion adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind, ensuring a more enjoyable and secure trekking experience.

Closing Notes

Undoubtedly, the Skandagiri night trek is one of the most remarkable treks near Bangalore . The journey is rewarding, offering breathtaking views from the summit that make every step worthwhile. However, brace yourself for the crowds that flock to the trail and gather at the peak, as this popular trekking destination attracts numerous adventurers seeking its scenic beauty.

The trek usually starts from the destination of the Papagni Temple which is situated near the village of Kalwara. The spot is marked around to guide you through the process so you don’t end up getting lost in the process. The trails are quite well cut out, so you wouldn’t face issues while trekking. The initial trial of the trek is covered in a semi-dry patch, so don’t get disheartened if you see nothing around. The lush greenery of the spot follows after that and the view from there on are breathtaking that you just can’t miss out on.

There is also an ancient temple which is located at the top of the hills that you will only get to see once you complete the trek. The view from atop the hills is breathtaking that will leave you with your mouth open. There are several small samadhi caves at the top of the hills that you will come across once you are done with the trek. People stop and relax there after the 5-hour trek. The trek, as we mentioned before, is known for the beauty of the night trek. This is why the majority of the people who visit that spot prefer to camp at the top of the hills overnight. You can witness the beautiful orange hues of the sunrise the next morning and add to the list of the experience even further. If you aren’t in the mood for all this, you can start the trek pretty early in the morning and even be back to your hotel by afternoon. For the return journey though, you need to follow along the same trekking route that you took to go up the hill. If you have the time, pass through the Nandi hills and explore that spot around as well before you return to Bangalore.

Myself and few of my friends went to Skandagiri in October and we were blocked by the village people as there was some incident.,.. I would like to know is the trekking allowed now in skandagiri??

Skandagiri trek has always been one of the most controversial treks near Bangalore. Most of the times, people make it and many a times, people are also unable to make it. Officially, Skandagiri trek is banned. The reason being a lot of Incidents because it is one of the favorite points for people having suicidal tendencies. I hope you are getting me what am I trying to say here. It purely depends on our luck. However, there are also and in fact a lot of trekking places around Bangalore just like skandagiri. Here is the link:

Try some of these places. They are realy good.

We went to skandagiri on the 3rd oct 2015(Saturday), parked our vehicle in the Chikkaballapur town and took autos to the foothills. 5 of us left from bangalore it took us 2hrs from hennur via the route you suggested. I followed your reviews and found it very useful so i thought we’ll go.

The ride was amazing, but it started pouring once we reached chikballapur. Due to the rain and since we reached at 10pm the autos demanded 200 rupees for a one way fare. But seeing no other way to reach the destination we reluctantly took two autos.

The route from the town was pitch black as there was a power cut in the town, the road and the surrounding region was also not visible. Only for a second when the lighting struck could we see the surrounding in a flash. The ride was scary as the roads we flooded and very narrow, the auto driver claimed to have taken us on a route through the village which was one of the three route suggested on google maps.

1km before papagni math one person came with a flashlight and blocked the road, he claimed to be a forest official and prevented us from going any further. He was pretty strict and said that all treks are cancelled even during the day as a leopard had attacked cattle in the surrounding region. This seemed too fake, but we had to listen, we tried persuading him but he refused.

With no other option we had to return disappointed. Since we took the same auto he demanded us another 200 to go back, or else drop us there. But at 10:45 stranded in a place none of us knew we paid 300 to each auto for both ways.

This seemed difficult to believe as so many other people have trekked before and enjoyed the trek and the sunrise. I thought this whole experience was a scam to loot the tourists. Easy money for both parties the auto guy could have had a agreement with the official. But i don’t want to be judgemental about the proceeding but would take it as a learning experience. Can you please let me know if they have actually banned trekking to the hills or these guys are making a business giving us false information.

' src=

can i get an info about night trek ! is night trek available through out the year ??

Yes you can go for this trek throughout the year but best time to go for the trek is after monsoon and in winter. Due to unfortunate incident at skandagiri, now-a-days police camp there to prevent people from going for the night trek.

However people still got there.

Skandagiri Sunrise Trek Reviews

Good............Experience!!!!!!!!!!!!. Overall trek experience was excellent t with good people joining the group and enjoying the trek. There were challenges but the trek lead handled them very well and on time. activities planned were done.😉😉

Lifetime memorable trip. We started at 3 in the night and reached the point just before sunrise. While capturing all of these photos and seeing the magical views I just had one feeling, “Earth is cute” 😊😊

This trip is fantastic with so knowledgeable guide and was truly the best trekking experience. Though we were exhausted but worth the view. Overall it was a great experience. Meet new people, Had a lot of fun while the night trek.😊😊

Cool................!!!!!!!!!!!!! I met many new people and made some great connections and friends on the go. I took up the responsibility of making sure 4 people who were younger than me are safe throughout the descent and we had some laughs too. This made me feel like a big brother taking care of his younger siblings, which was certainly a great feeling for me. 😊😊

Wonderful trek! The trek leaders were really helpful and fun to hang out with! Everything was managed perfectly even the transportation from Bangalore. They kept us well-informed about every next step. One of the best treks around Bangalore with the best groups! 😉😉

It was really nice trek. We were expecting to see the sunrise with a normal atmosphere but it turned out to be a rainy day so that put more adventure in the trek😊😊

Perfect................!!! It was an awesome experience on my first trek. The pickup and drop were on time and the journey of the trek was beautiful. Would definitely recommend everyone to go here.😋😋

The trek was easy and the best part was the schedule. The trek leader makes sure that we are right on time. The booking process was easy. ❤️‍🔥

The Skandgiri Trek was an amazing experience for someone like me who is new to trekking. It was challenging because of the rain and slippery conditions but quite an adventure. The view from the top and the sunrise was serene.

Our Skandagiri trek was really good. All members were friendly and funny. The organisers were good...felt they could be more cheering. Overall it was a great experience with Backpackers.💖💖💖

Skandagiri locks one of the most mesmerizing views of the sky and earth that meet at sunrise with clouds at an eye-level height urging you not to leave. A night trek in Bangalore, Skandagiri is a must for adventure and nature lovers, who can spend the night with a camp stay in front of an amazing bonfire. This 10km Skandagiri trek begins two hours before sunrise, where one has to climb up these hills by passing the wilderness until you to reach the absolute top.

Skandgiri is a beautiful hill near Bangalore, which is famous for trekking and sunrise views and is also known as Kalavara Durga among the locals. Surrounded by the Nandi Hills, it lies at an elevation of 1450 meters.

The trek to the hilltop location is a thrilling one with a moderate difficulty level for trekkers. It is known that people often spend the night under the stars at the hilltop which provides a splendid view of the surrounding hills.

Skandgiri was once home to a majestic fort built by Tipu Sultan, who was the ruler of the kingdom of Mysore in the eighteenth century. When the battle between his kingdom and the Britishers was lost, there was a shift in the power to the British officials.

The fort did not manage to thrive under their administration. Today, only a few walls of the fort remain erect while a major portion of the fort is now in ruins. Notable among the landscape are two temples, one at the bottom of the hill and another at the top, which did not come to any harm, while everything else lies in rubble today.

Also, this is one of the notable trekking spots in Bangalore , which can be visited not only during the day but also at night. In fact, undertaking a trek on the trail up the hill on a night of full moon is one of the adventurous things that you can do at Skandagiri. At the top of the hill, the display of natural beauty around you will be an enchantment to cherish!

• Skandagiri is only 60 km from Bengaluru and an excellent year-round trek for both novice and experienced trekkers. • It offers a panoramic view of the four neighboring ‘Giris’, villages, towns, and forests from the top, which is an amazing sight to behold. • Only a few hikes allow you to climb through steep rocks, hop boulders, and a muddy track. Skandagiri provides everything and is easily accessible from Bangalore. • The ruined walls, carved pillars, and stones of an ancient fort closer to the summit transport us to a time in the 18th century when Skandagiri Fort was bustling with life and splendour. • On top of Skandagiri Hill, there lies a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s grand architecture is another attraction of the Skandagiri trek. • Skandgiri is also well-known for its thrilling adventures and sunrise trekking opportunities which begin after sunset and last till early light, allowing you to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Skandagiri can be reached by road from Bangalore. It is just about 60-70 kilometers from the city depending on your location in Bangalore.

Hello everyone, I am more than happy to share my experience with my first-night trek. This trek gave me a lot of new friends, a walk-in nature in the night with so many people around me having a good experience together. This being my first trek I am happy to tell these experiences & moments were possible because of all the coordinators who helped us. I am going to get more of my friends in the future events. Thank you Adventuresome.

Trek was nice but so much of tiring 🙂 whoever is planning for this trek I would like to suggest them to do few stretching exercises at-least for 3-4 days before this trek. Relaxing on the peak of Skandagiri under sky roof along with Stars and campfire was superb 🙂 Adventuresome is all safe and reliable and organized 🙂 Even I went alone in a group, got good accompany. You will find a decent crowd. Sahil our trek leader was nicely coordinating with everyone. Some Tips:- 1. Do stretching exercises before 2-3 days of the actual trek 2. Wear Trekking Shoes only 3. Do not wear Jeans as there are so many Rocky patches to climb up. 4. Carry Winter Jacket and cap as the early morning you will find its tough time to survive from cold 🙂 5. Torch by default for Night Trek 6. Try to keep your bag light weighted as much as possible. The overall experience was nice…

This place is amazing and so beautiful as it gave you the vibe of the morning. The trek is not so tough and the guide dives you the company so you don’t feel boring. In short, a nice trek can go with you people.

Not many tour operators offer the mystical Skandagiri night trek option, but Adventuresome does on demand! This was the ultimate adventure for us, we were a group of 8 people. I did not know such a short trek could be so thrilling! And the whole thing was so immaculately arranged that the Skandagiri trek had to go well. Kudos to Adventuresome for the brilliant planning!

' src=

Though it was a short trip, the good planning and hospitality of Adventuresome will always stay with us. I was apprehensive about the service I was about to receive, but I was pleasantly surprised. The car ride was smooth, the breakfast was good, and our guide was patient and helpful. Overall, my Skandagiri night trekking experience was great! A brilliant job by Adventuresome.

Awesome experience. Travel:- If you are opting for a bike it will cost you around 500rs. But you need to travel for 140km up n down. Else opt for the Traveller 1350rs. Level of trekking:- Depends on person to person. For me it was moderate. But if you are a newbie in trekking I will say it’s difficult. You will get tired for sure. It is worth going place. Far far better than Nandi hills. This is overlooked. Required things:- Carry a torch or mobile torch is more than enough. Carry something to eat. Raincoat, water bottle. Zenith:- This is a beautiful experience you will have once you reach. Can’t explain in words. You need to go there to experience it 🙂

' src=

Your guidance is very good and knowledgeable, you described very nicely and during the trek we follow your suggestions, we went to some hidden places too. The breakfast place was fine and we enjoyed it. Good to go.

' src=

A very beautiful place is full of adventure and a prime location. We did this trek twice and both time we enjoyed very much. The perfect break from the hustle-bustle of the city and super relaxing. Must book from Adventuresome as they provide you the best guide of this place and pick up service too. Full-on adventure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

We trekked to Skandagiri from the foothill in hot summer. This will be a superb trek after the rainy season. Please note that it is not a well-marked route and without mobile connectivity, so keep a track of your bearing. I will call it a mild trek, but a very long one(3-4km one-sided). Nature is amazing and one needs to figure out a route based on a general direction. Keep a compass or GPS, or you are sure to get lost. Also, there is nothing to eat or drink so carry enough food/water. The only place you can eat is on the way back at the temple.

' src=

Thanks a lot for the article post. Many thanks again.

' src=

The Trek was well planned and executed by you people. I had a very good Experience, Nice conversations & a lot of fun after a long time. I have done many good treks in the past and this was my first with this group. So, thinking that this review is sheer out of my first trek experience would not be true. Prashant, Abhishek & Shifali managed it very well. All people in the group for this trek were cool in their own way. Improvements are always there to adopt. I would recommend people travelling with Adventuresome.

Oh! I have been doing so many mistakes. I always thought my travel blog has to be only about me or experience-based. 🙁 I am beginning to see a different perspective to travel blogging. Lots to correct now. Thank you very much for these pointers.

' src=

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s equally educative and amusing, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head. I am very happy that I stumbled across this during my search for Skandagiri hills.

' src=

Always great advice. It’s more than just writing – you need to be an experience as well!

If anyone plans on trekking to Machu Picchu during the winter, see my post on why you should NOT GO during this time 😉

' src=

Love your advice! Thanks for some down to earth realism as well! I’m a traveler just starting out and love to hear this itinerary as I will navigate myself for trekking. I also love your blogs list! Some I have read and some I don’t but you have enough great ones I do have trust you enough to get the ones I don’t and read ASAP! This was very helpful and valuable! Thank you for sharing your insight and for bringing some balance to the field.

Star trek's lost uss enterprise model returned to roddenberry.

Lost since the 1970s, the original model of the Starship Enterprise used in Star Trek: The Original Series has been returned to Rod Roddenberry.

  • The original USS Enterprise model from Star Trek has been returned to Gene Roddenberry's son after being missing since the 1970s.
  • The 3-foot version of the Enterprise featured in the 1960s Star Trek is now authenticated and set to be restored for public exhibition.
  • Rod Roddenberry plans to find a museum to showcase the iconic Enterprise model.

The first model of the USS Enterprise used in Star Trek: The Original Series has been returned to Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry. Missing since the 1970s when Gene Roddenberry loaned it to the filmmakers of 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture , the 3-foot model of the Starship Enterprise was used in Star Trek' s original pilot episode, "The Cage," as well as the opening credits of Star Trek: The Original Series . The model popped up on eBay last fall , and the sellers took it down and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it.

Yahoo! News reports that last weekend, the lost original model of Star Trek' s USS Enterprise was returned to Rod Roddenberry. The now-found and authenticated Enterprise model was the prototype for the 11-foot version featured in the episodes of the 1960s Star Trek . The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. Rod Roddenberry commented on the Enterprise model's return:

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

Rod Roddenberry also officially commented on the return of the lost USS Enterprise model on his Instagram (@eugeneroddenberryofficial):

Star Trek: Every Version Of The Starship Enterprise

How star trek's lost uss enterprise model was returned to roddenberry, a vital piece of star trek history is finally home.

It was a long road for the original USS Enterprise model to return home to Rod Roddenberry. The 3-foot Enterprise model graced the desk of Gene Roddenberry, but after it was loaned out to Star Trek: The Original Series , it vanished, and, “No one knew what happened to it," according to Rod Roddenberry. Heritage's Auction's executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they'd discovered the lost Enterprise model in a storage unit. It was brought to Heritage's Beverly Hills office where they instantly knew "it was the real thing."

Amusingly, Rod Roddenberry is also "vindicated" because of a long-running rumor that he destroyed the original Enterprise model as a boy by throwing it in a swimming pool.

Joe Maddalena said the original USS Enterprise model could easily sell for $1-million at auction, but as a "cultural icon," it is essentially "priceless." Rod Roddenberry admits he has vague memories of the 3-foot Enterprise model, and he didn't think much about it until he was contacted when the model briefly appeared on eBay. Roddenberry said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed it was the right thing to do to return the model. Without going into details about the agreement reached, Roddenberry added, “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.” Roughly 50 years after it disappeared, a crucial piece of Star Trek history has finally come home.

I came to yuck yuck near 1/4 of these shows – strange reality spin-offs, why?

Then, I saw Elsbeth shuttled to Fridays. This ‘year’ of scripted tv has been so rote and dry, why abandon possible gems (even where they shine familiar)?

CBS you recycle and reform as the norm. NBC will shatter without wolf and ABC is lowering the Shonda mast (you see what happens there?)

Generally, ugh.

Oops, time zone outrage…statements still apply 😉

Law and Order Trilogy for me (they better renew Organized Crime)

Does anyone know why Max didn’t post what titles are leaving this month? I always check what’s leaving for all the streaming services I have to prioritize what is leaving to ensure I watch before it does.

That should have been in the TVline Schedule post of What’s Leaving & What’s Returning which came out on Saturday the 13th, for the week starting April 14th. Are you saying what’s leaving was not on there?
