How to plan your vacation using a mind-map

Making a vacation plan can be a time-consuming and challenging task. However, by using a mind map, you can easily keep track of all the details and have a more enjoyable planning experience.

Leif Andreas Rudlang

Leif Andreas Rudlang

Who doesn't love the feeling of having time off from work to relax and take a vacation? We all know how important it is to take some time to ourselves to recharge and rejuvenate, but sometimes planning and organizing a vacation can be just as stressful as our everyday lives.

That's why, in this article, I'll show you how to use a mind map to plan and organize your dream vacation easily, so you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying your time off!

Why use a mind map to plan your vacation?

A mind map is a great way to plan your vacation because it allows you to see all of the different aspects of your trip visually. It can help you brainstorm ideas, plan activities, and make sure that you don't forget anything.

A mind map is also a great tool for reducing anxiety when packing for a trip. By mapping out what you need to bring, you can avoid forgetting important items. And when you're in the moment and unsure of what cafe or attraction to visit, the map can be a helpful lookup.

Mapping out the history, local food, and customs is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture of the people living at your destination. By doing this, you will get a far better understanding of the area you are visiting.

Plus, mind-maps are just plain fun to make, and it's a great bonding exercise for your family to collaborate on planning a vacation!

Making your travel mind map

The first step in creating a mind map is to come up with some initial categories. I often start out with these categories:

  • Destinations - Information about each destination you visit.
  • Travel - Details on transportation to reach my destinations.
  • Packing list - What I must remember to bring.
  • History - I’m a history nerd, so I like to research a bit about the local history before traveling to a destination.

mind map travel and tourism

What categories you use will depend on what aspects of planning a trip are important to you. For example, if you're interested in local food, you might make a seperate "Food" category. Once you have your initial categories, you can add new branches and rearrange them as needed.

Don't worry about getting the right structure for your mind map. The magical thing about mind maps is that a final structure will naturally emerge as you work on it.

Destination

I prefer to create a separate branch for every destination I visit and then create sub-topics related to that destination on each branch. So, if I stay one week in Las Palmas and then one week in Puerto Rico, I would create one branch for each destination.

mind map travel and tourism

What is great about this strategy is that when I click on the attractions topic listed under Puerto Rico, I know that I will find the attractions I want to visit when staying in Puerto Rico. Likewise for Las Palmas.

The topics I generally use per destination are:

  • Hotel - Everything related to the hotel we are staying at.
  • Attractions - Things we want to experience near the destination.
  • Restaurants - Places we want to eat near the destination.
  • Beaches - The beaches we want to visit. For a non-beach-type holiday, this could be other location types, for example, city districts when visiting Tokyo.

Generally, I try to limit this list strictly to topics that require at least some research. Having a list of lovely places to eat is naturally useful on a holiday, while a list of supermarkets might not be necessary as you tend to find one on every street corner.

I tend to have two distinct categories in the travel branch: travel documents and the travel plan itself.

mind map travel and tourism

It is handy to have a place to gather all of your resources for your trip. Having an entirely written plan makes the travel days much more relaxing, especially if you share it with others to get everyone on the same page.

Packing list

When packing for a holiday, it is important to consider the climate of your destination, the activities you will be doing, and how long you will be gone.

For example, if you are going to a warm destination, you will need to pack lighter clothing that can be easily layered. If you are going to be doing a lot of hiking or other outdoor activities, you will need to pack sturdy shoes and clothing that can stand up to being dirty.

And finally, if you are going on an extended holiday, you will need to pack enough clothing and supplies to last you the entire trip.

A packing list branch, often dubbed "Stuff to Remember," can be useful because it helps you visualize what you need to bring and where you will be packing it.

And if you are collaborating with your family, this helps you prioritize what to bring!

Here's one way to structure this branch:

mind map travel and tourism

  • Clothing - For all the clothes you are bringing with you, I typically try to keep this to a single topic, but if you are packing a lot, it can be quite helpful to split it into sub-topics.
  • Toiletries - All your medicines, sunscreen, and other toiletries. There are items in this category that would be terrible to forget for many of us, such as allergy pills or contact lenses. Having it mapped out makes me less anxious when traveling.
  • Electronics - Phone, charger, laptop, camera, and headphones.
  • Carry-On - Everything you want to bring on the plane and is required for the trip.
  • Misc - For everything that does not fit in the main categories.

No matter where you go, there is always an opportunity to learn about a new culture. By doing some research before your trip, you can learn about the customs and traditions of the people in the area. This will help you understand their way of life and act respectfully.

mind map travel and tourism

Some great topics to put into this branch include language, food, history, and customs.

Save time and aggravation with a simple travel planning mind map

By Chuck Frey

mind map travel and tourism

To prevent this from happening, I have gotten in the habit of creating a handwritten list of everything I need to take a long night or two before the trip. Then, as I pack each item, I cross it off my list.

But re-creating this list from scratch each time I travel has been a time-consuming pain, so I recently decided to streamline the process: I created a simple travel planning mind map that I can utilize as a starting point and customize to meet the needs of each trip.

The mind map shown above right (please click on the image to view a larger, more complete version) is divided into several major segments, corresponding to the types of items I need to take in a typical business trip. Major sections include clothing, personal hygiene items, medication, electronics, work items and a special section just for those things that are peculiar to that particular trip.

Click here to download this mind map in a MindManager 8 file format How to use it

To customize this map to your specific needs, I recommend that you sit down with your laptop or in front of your PC in a quiet setting, and mentally walk through your day. For example, if you want to develop a complete list of the hygiene items that you need for your average business trip, I would start by envisioning the sequence of things that you do to prepare for your day, and what is needed to do each one. Take a similar walk through the process you follow to get ready for bed, and the tools, clothing and supplies you need to make that happen. Record all of these items in your customized version of this mind map.

Your goal is to create a template that you can use as a starting point for your own trips. A day or two before each trip, open this template, save it to a new file name that corresponds to your trip and begin customizing:

  • What are your specific clothing requirements for this trip, both daytime (more formal, for business meetings) as well as evening attire (casual clothing, shoes, etc.)?
  • What files, records, presentations and other supporting information do you need to take along in order to accomplish the objectives of this trip, as well is make efficient use of your travel time?
  • What key things do you need to do before I leave on the trip (give my wife a copy of my itinerary, charge my cell phone and iPod, reorder medication from the pharmacy, etc.).

For best results, you should start preparing your trip map at least several days before you leave. This will give you the opportunity to add to it in several iterations, which will increase the odds that you won’t overlook anything important. When preparing mind maps, it’s always a good idea to capture as much information as possible in one sitting, then walk away from it for a day or so. When you return to it, you’ll be in a different frame of mind, which will help you to see additional items that need to be added to it. This increases your odds of producing an accurate and complete map.

Once your travel map is finalized, print it out and use it as a checklist as you gather and pack everything for your trip.

I’m confident that this simple mind map will save you at least an hour of time in planning and preparing for each trip, as well as illuminate needless aggravation and inconvenience. I hope you find it useful!

History of Khabarovsk Krai

In the Middle Ages, the territory of today’s Khabarovsk Krai was inhabited mainly by the peoples of the Tungus-Manchu language group, as well as Nivkhs. In China they were known collectively as “wild Jurchen”. In the 13th-14th centuries, the Mongol rulers of China repeatedly organized expeditions to the lower Amur.

Russians began the development of the Far East in the 17th century. In 1639, a Cossack troop headed by Ivan Moskvitin reached the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The first stockade town was built in the mouth of the Ulya River. Later, Vasily Danilovich Poyarkov and Yerofei Pavlovich Khabarov were the first who started joining the Amur lands to Russia. Before Russians came here, the tribes of Daurs, Evenks, Natks, Gilyaks and others lived in this area (only about 30 thousand people).

The area was quickly populated by Russian settlers; new stockade towns were founded. But the process was interrupted due to a conflict with the Qing Dynasty. From the 1680s, Manchus started to fight against the Russian state.

More Historical Facts…

Russia could not move significant military forces to the Amur region and had to sign the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689). According to it, Russians had to leave the left bank of the Amur River but managed to uphold its rights for the area behind Lake Baikal and the Sea of Okhotsk coast.

In the 18th century, Okhotsk became the main Pacific port of the Russian Empire. Development of the northern coast of the Pacific, exploration of the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin prepared the basis for the return of the Amur region.

In 1847, Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov was appointed a governor-general of Eastern Siberia. He did his best to return the Amur area to the Russian Empire. The number of Russians in the region began to grow. In 1858, the town of Khabarovsk was founded.

As a result of the weakening of China during the Opium Wars, two agreements were signed - the Aigun Treaty in 1858 and the Beijing Treaty in 1860. The Russian-Chinese border was established on the Amur and Ussuri rivers.

In 1884, Zabaikalskaya, Amurskaya and Primorskaya regions were united into Priamurskoye region with the center in Khabarovsk. Until the late 19th century, the Amur area was settled slowly. The situation changed in the early 20th century. In 1900, the Trans-Baikal Railway was opened, in 1902 - the Chinese Eastern Railway.

As a result, the number of settlers grew rapidly. In 1900-1913, about 300,000 peasants from other regions of the Russian Empire came to the Amur area. There were three towns (Khabarovsk, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur and Okhotsk) on the territory, which makes Khabarovsk krai today. By 1915, there were more than six thousand settlements with a total population of 316,300 people in Primorskaya oblast.

The Civil War lead to a great number of deaths and economic collapse in Russia. The restoration of pre-war level of economy was achieved by 1926. New cities were built in the region - Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Birobidzhan. October 20, 1938, Dalnevostochny region was divided into Khabarovsky and Primorsky regions.

In 1947-1948, Sakhalin and Amur regions were separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1953, Magadan region was formed and separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1956, Kamchatka region became independent too. In 1991, the Jewish autonomous region was separated from Dalnevostochny region.
