There’s always a whole lot of things going on in Bryant Park. During late Fall and Winter, get ready to experience the Winter Village if you’re visiting! You’ll love the holiday markets and drinks by the ice skating rink.

When visiting during the warmer months, play chess, board games (you can borrow board games and more on the Fifth Avenue Terrace in front of the New York Public Library), ping pong, or relax and soak in the sun on the lawn with your pup.

Prefer not to lie on the grass in the hot sun? There are a ton of tables and chairs around with umbrellas to keep you and your pup cool.

Washington Square Park

Dog-Friendly Washington Square Park

Domino Park

Domino Park is perched along the East River at 15 River Street and offers fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline, a dog park, and a taco stand. Created out of the old Domino Sugar Factory, this riverfront oasis is a recent addition to the neighborhood’s landscape.

The Domino Park Dog Run can be found on the park’s south side, near River Street and just north of South 5th Street. It’s clean for your pup and has excellent city views for you.

After the dog park, take the elevated path to savor views of the Williamsburg Bridge to the south and the majestic Manhattan skyline to the west. And, of course, if you’re in the mood for some tacos, you must try Tacocina!

Prospect Park

Prospect Park House

Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s most iconic park. It offers 526 acres of green space to explore and a dog beach!

For those wanting to connect with fellow Prospect Park dog enthusiasts, you must check out  FIDO . As New York City’s biggest off-leash community, they orchestrate various events annually. Coffee Bark is a monthly meeting where dog owners mingle, share stories and indulge in coffee, pastries, and dog treats.

McCarren Park

Situated between Greenpoint and Williamsburg, McCarren Park is a Brooklyn landmark. With 35 acres, this park is a hub of vibrant activity, complete with a designated dog run, bocce courts, and a bustling community pool. Dog Friendly New York City Parks | Long Island City Gantry Plaza State Park

The best views of the Manhattan skyline are either from Queens or New Jersey. Head across the East River to Queens by riding the NYC Ferry with your pup, and you will arrive in Long Island City, Gantry State Park.

Your pup can also run off-leash at Hunter’s Point South Dog Run, Center Blvd., and 51st Ave.

dog friendly walking tours nyc

Note:  NYC laws state that only service dogs are allowed inside food establishments. All NON-SERVICE DOGS must dine at the outdoor seating. This means the best time to eat with your dog is during the warmer months in April to October. However, since COVID-19, more restaurants have created heated outdoor seating. You can learn about the rules of dining with your dog in NYC  here .

In New York City, most restaurants with outdoor dining areas and patios will allow your dog to join you. Below are a few of my favorite dog-friendly New York City restaurants to dine with my pup, Gatsby.

The Wilson, NYC

The Wilson is the most dog-friendly restaurant in New York City. Why? Because, they have a dog menu ! All the names of their specialty cocktails and mocktails are dog themed. They are the only restaurant in NYC with a separate enclosed eating area with heat lamps in the winter. It is a must visit!

Location: 132 W 27th St, New York, NY 10001

Shake Shack at Madison Square Park

Dog Friendly New York City Restaurant Shake Shack Madison Square Park

This Shake Shack located at Madison Square Park is a must-visit in NYC with your pup. With plenty of outdoor seating and heating lamps in the Winter, it’s the perfect spot to grab a casual meal with your dog. Don’t forget to order your dog a Shake Shack Poochini, a vanilla custard with a  Bocce’s  biscuit. My pup Gatsby is their #1 Poochini customer.

My other go-to for dinner is Felice NYC . They serve classic Italian dishes inspired by the traditional cuisine of the Tuscan countryside. Try all their Italian classics crafted using the finest, freshest produce available. There are several locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn Heights, with plenty of outdoor seating available for your pup to join you.

Our favorite Felice NYC locations:

  • Felice 71: 1593 1st Ave., New York, NY 10028

Brooklyn Location:

  • Felice  Montague: 84 Montague St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

T. Brasserie

For French cuisine, my favorite place to dine with my pup during the warmer months is T. Brasserie by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Located in The Tin Building in the Seaport District, they do not disappoint with fine dining. I love their atmosphere and service. It also offers the most shading on a hot summer day. Their food is fantastic!

Location: Tin Building 96 South St, New York, NY 10038

Industry Kitchen

Industry Kitchen is located in the Seaport District with waterfront views and offers modern American cuisine based on seasonal market ingredients and wood-fired pizzas.

Dog Friendly New York City Restaurant Grand Banks

Want to dine with your pup on a historic fishing boat? Then, you have to check out Grand Banks at Pier 25 in Hudson River Park. This spot is all summer vibes! If you get seasick, there’s also seating on land on the pier next to where the boat is docked.

When we dine here in the summer, our go-to is the caviar hash brown, soft shell crab, and a lobster salad.

Location: Pier 25 Hudson River, New York, NY 10013

A Korean restaurant located right at Union Square, Barn Joon is the perfect place to grab brunch or lunch after strolling through the  farmer’s green market  with your pup. Their outdoor seating is small and gets packed quickly. Try their crispy chicken sandwich and fried tiger roll!

Location: 52 Stone St, New York, NY 10004

Dog-Friendly New York City Restaurant

LouLou NYC is a French bistro with a cocktail lounge is located on the corner of 19th Street and 8th Avenue in the heart of Chelsea. The decor inside and out is gorgeous. The front entrance is always draped with flowers, and it’s one of the most Instagrammable bistros in NYC. My favorite menu item is their croissant french toast. If you come here for lunch (Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), you have to try the Speck, which is smoked ham, arugula, black pepper ricotta, and caramelized onion on a flatbread. It was so good I didn’t share it with anyone! I had the opportunity to meet the owner, Mathias Van Leyden. He told me he named his bistro after his adorable rescue dog!

Location: 176 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011

The Smith Restaurant at Nomad

Location: 1150 Broadway, New York, NY 10001

Dog-Friendly New York city restaurant | Mekong Brooklyn NYC

If you’re looking for the best Vietnamese restaurant after a walk at Fort Greene Park with your pup, Mekong in Brooklyn is a must-try. I come here quite often. In my opinion, Mekong beats all other Vietnamese restaurants in NYC! Every menu item I’ve ever tried was excellent. The outdoor seating area is nice because it’s fenced, preventing Gatsby from interacting with other dogs during their walks.

Location: 250 Dekalb Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205

Dog-friendly New York City Restaurants | Dino

A Northern Italian restaurant, Dino is also located in the heart of Fort Greene. After walking Fort Greene Park with your pup, it’s another excellent dining spot. My go-to is their Rigatoni Ragú. Chateau Le Woof

Not precisely in Manhattan, Chateau Le Woof is located in Astoria, Queens. It’s a short NYC ferry ride from the city that brings you across the East River. It’s a nice ride where you and your dog will see the entire New York City skyline.

Come by for brunch, grab a coffee or latte, and watch your pup socialize in the gated indoor play area.

Location: 3101 Vernon Blvd, Queens, NY 11106

With so many restaurants offering outdoor seating, we hardly go to any bars. We just grab a drink at the restaurants. But here are a few dog-friendly New York City bars some of the locals love to take their pups to.

Dog Parks and Dog Runs In New York City

New York City has plenty of dog parks to go around. Here’s a list below of a few that we really enjoy and find to be much cleaner than some others.

Dog Park Etiquette:  Make sure your dog is current on vaccines. You never know what diseases they can catch in one of these dog parks. Be mindful and look after your dog. Don’t play fetch with your dog in dog parks because some dogs may have a resource guarding issue.

Make sure that your dog can socialize with other pups before you enter. The last thing you want is to end your NYC trip with a visit to the emergency vet if a dog fight occurs.

Lastly, pick up after your dog. It’s the right thing to do.

Green Markets

The best place in NYC to grab fresh apple pie, doughnuts, hot apple cider, or pumpkin spice everything during the Fall is at one of NYC’s Greenmarkets. The most popular green market is in  Union Square.  We visit here frequently, and it’s also a great place to buy affordable organic veggies that are in season. Get there earlier in the day for the best selection of your favorite treats and to avoid the large crowds.

If you are in the Brooklyn area, visit the green market at Grand Army Plaza.

  • The Union Square Green Market  – open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Every weekend from April to October, you can find the Brooklyn Flea Market set up beneath the archway in DUMBO.

The streets get pretty crowded, so make sure you have your pup leashed and keep an eye out for street food on the floor so your dog won’t try to eat scraps off the ground!

When you’re planning to join a  guided tour , make sure to let the company know in advance that your dog will attend. This way, you can get an official go-ahead from the tour operator.

Walk The Brooklyn Bridge From DUMBO to Manhattan

Dog Friendly New York City Walk Over the Brooklyn Bridge

Enjoy the skyline of downtown Manhattan, and admire the iconic architecture as you and your pup walk across the Brooklyn Bridge! I recommend starting the walk from the Manhattan side so you can walk across to Brooklyn and enjoy the DUMBO area.

Dumbo stands for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” and it’s a trendy neighborhood filled with cobblestone streets. Make sure you head to Washington Street for an Instagrammable shot in front of the Manhattan Bridge. After Washington Street, stop by  Brooklyn Bridge Park  to find  Jane’s Carousel  and  Pebble Beach  just around the corner for photo ops!

To walk the Brooklyn Bridge from DUMBO to Manhattan, take a stairway in the underpass on Washington Street, 2 blocks from Front Street, where the famous DUMBO Instagram photo is.

Ferry Ride Governor’s Island

Winter dog days at Governor's Island in New York City

For the first time, Governor’s Island started allowing dogs to ride the ferry and explore the island’s 172 acres during the winter dog days in January through the last Saturday in April.

Before you head out on this adventure with your furry best friend, read my post on  dog days at Governor’s Island , so you have all the info.

Take the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty

Dog Friendly Places in NYC Staten Island Ferry

Take your pup on the Staten Island Ferry for free for a great view of the Statue of Liberty. When you arrive on the Staten Island side, walk around St. George and see historic architecture, restaurants, boutique stores, and more!

Opened in the Spring of 2022, the 80,000-square-foot rooftop park at Pier 57 is New York City’s largest rooftop park. Enjoy the rooftop with your dog and get amazing city views, Little Island Park (allows service dogs only), and the Hudson River. Check out our experience below.

Take a Ferry Ride on the East River

Dog Friendly NYC Ferry Ride

For just $4, you can take your pup on a NYC ferry ride along the East River to destinations like Greenport, Williamsburg, DUMBO, Astoria, Long Island City, and Lower Manhattan (Seaport District and Wall Street). You’ll pass under Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge and see the entire skyline of New York City!

Ride the Circle Line Cruise

Dog-Friendly Circle Line Cruise New York City

Since 2021, The Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises has partnered with  North Shore Animal League  to host a dog-friendly cruise. The cruise sets sail from Pier 83 and takes you on an hour-long ride to experience breathtaking NYC skyline views with your pup.

Check out the Circle Line Website for the next scheduled pup cruise.

Times Square

Siberian Husky with Times Square New York City back drop.

Times Square is best known for bright lights, skyscrapers plastered with digital billboards, the theatre district, and NYC’s New Year’s Eve venue. The big crowds and bright lights just give off big energy! That song “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay Z is what comes to my mind every time I’m in Times Square with Gatsby.

Notable Locations:

  • Times Square steps on 47th Street and Broadway
  • Subway Entrance on 42nd Street and Broadway
  • 45th Street and Broadway Street View

Roosevelt Island

Dog Friendly New York City Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island is this little island in the East River of NYC between Manhattan to the west and Queens on Long Island City to the east. It’s a must visit if you’re into cherry blossoms and visiting New York City during mid-March through May.

To get to Roosevelt Island, take the NYC Ferry Astoria Line.

Dog-Friendly Museum in New York City, AKC Museum of the Dog

AKC Museum of the Dog

Have you ever been to a museum with your dog? It’s not every day we get to experience that with our pups. Luckily, the only dog-friendly museum in NYC that allows pet dogs is the AKC Museum of The Dog. Enjoy some fine art and and learn about the history of dogs. Read my detailed blog post about the AKC Museum of the Dog so you know what you can expect on your visit.

Dogs can only visit the AKC Museum of the Dog on Furry Fridays, held twice a month from 6-8 p.m. Check out the  museum’s calendar of events  to see when is Furry Friday.

Dog-Friendly Hikes Near NYC | Bear Mountain State Park

Go Hiking With Your Dog

If you want a change of scenery, venture out of New York City and take your dog for a hike. There are many  dog-friendly hiking spots near NYC  that are just under two hours away.

Our favorite spots are  Sands Point Preserve  and  Bear Mountain State Park .

Go Kayaking With Your Dog

For $12, you can spend 45 minutes kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding with your pup in a protected cove along the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Online reservations are required.

Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons in New York City. For a detailed list, read my blog post for  dog-friendly Winter things to do in NYC  and  dog-friendly Fall things to do in NYC .

Here are a few of my favorite seasonal activities with my pup, Gatsby:

Shop the Christmas Markets In NYC

Dog Friendly New York City Holiday Markets

If you’re looking to find unique gifts in New York City, then the Christmas Markets will be the best place to find them. The vendors are primarily small businesses offering unique handmade or local goods. You can find jewelry, specialty foods (even treats for your pup), spices and teas, and handcrafted goods.

Best Outdoor NYC Christmas Markets:

  • Winter Village at Bryant Park
  • Union Square Holiday Market
  • Columbus Circle Holiday Market

Best Indoor NYC Christmas Market

  • The Holiday Fair at Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal

Go to A Drive In Movie Theater

Drive to  Skyline Drive-In  and watch a movie with your pup in your car! This place also offers killer views of the Manhattan Skyline. Listen to the movie’s sound through your car’s stereo or use Skyline Drive-In’s rentable radio.

If you are visiting NYC without a car, no worries! You can bring your own chair or even rent one.

Tompkins Square Halloween Parade

Even if you and your pup won’t want to wear a costume,  this traditional parade  is worth going to! You can check out dogs of all sizes and ages wearing super creative costumes. They all come to battle it out for best costume with hopes of taking home epic prizes. There are tons of contestants, spectators, celebrity hosts, and judges.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

If your dog is OK with large crowds, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is such a fun experience. You’ll enjoy seeing giant character balloons, floats, and performances. It starts at 77th Street and Central Park West and then marches down 2.5 miles.

The parade goes from Central Park West to Columbus Circle, turning onto Central Park South and then down 6th Avenue/Avenue of the Americas. At 34th Street, the Parade will make its final turn west and end at 7th Avenue in front of Macy’s Herald Square.

Take Your Pup to A Ball Game

The Mets usually host a “Bark at the Park” event where your dog can join you and enjoy a baseball game. The coolest part is that they allow the dogs to walk the field and provide some dog-friendly freebies.

Visit Coney Island

Dog Friendly New York City Activity | Coney Island

Head to Coney Island for fun at the beach with an amusement park and stroll through a lively boardwalk. Leashed dogs are allowed on the boardwalk at Coney Island year-round and only allowed on the beach from September 30 to April 30.

10 Fun Dog Activities to Enjoy in NYC

New York City is a vibrant and bustling metropolis that offers countless opportunities for fun and adventure. And what better way to explore this concrete jungle than with your furry best friend by your side? From dog-friendly parks and cafes to hiking trails and beach frolics, NYC has something for every canine companion. In this article, we will take you on a whirlwind tour of the top 10 fun dog activities to enjoy in the Big Apple. So, grab your leash, lace up your walking shoes, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure with your canine companion.

Exploring NYC’s Dog-Friendly Parks and Playgrounds

NYC is home to an impressive array of dog-friendly parks and playgrounds where your pooch can run, jump, and play to their heart’s content. Central Park, the crown jewel of New York City, offers designated off-leash hours in certain areas, giving your furry friend the freedom to explore and socialize with other dogs. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is another excellent option, with vast expanses of greenery and off-leash areas where dogs can let loose. Other noteworthy parks include Washington Square Park, Carl Schurz Park, and Riverside Park. These parks not only provide ample space for your dog to exercise but also offer picturesque backdrops for memorable walks and picnics.

Unleash the Fun: Off-Leash Areas for Dogs in NYC

If you’re looking for off-leash adventures throughout the day, NYC has plenty of options. Dog runs, which are designated areas specifically designed for dogs to burn off energy, are scattered throughout the city. One of the most popular off-leash areas is the Tompkins Square Park Dog Run in the East Village. This fully-fenced park features a separate section for small dogs and provides agility equipment for additional entertainment. Another favorite spot is the Hillside Dog Park in Brooklyn, offering expansive green space, shade, and water features for hot summer days. These off-leash areas are fantastic for allowing your pup to socialize and engage in some serious playtime with fellow furry friends.

Dog-Friendly Cafes and Restaurants in the Big Apple

In a city filled with a diverse culinary scene, it’s no surprise that many cafes and restaurants welcome four-legged patrons. If you’re craving a cup of joe or a delicious brunch, head over to Boris & Horton in the East Village. This unique establishment not only serves coffee and bites for humans but also has a dedicated dog-friendly space for your pup to enjoy treats and make new friends. For a more upscale experience, the Barking Dog Luncheonette on the Upper East Side provides a delightful outdoor seating area where you and your furry companion can dine together.

Pooch Paradise: NYC’s Best Dog Runs and Trails

When it comes to outdoor adventures, NYC offers numerous dog runs and trails that will satisfy both you and your canine friend. The High Line, an elevated park on Manhattan’s west side, provides a beautiful and scenic path for leisurely walks with your pup. Hudson River Park, with its miles of waterfront trail, offers stunning views of the water while allowing ample space for your dog to exercise. Another fantastic option is the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, a peaceful and historic path located just outside the city, perfect for a day trip with your pup.

Getting Active with Your Furry Friend: Hiking Spots in NYC

While NYC may be known for its towering skyscrapers, the city also boasts several hiking spots that are perfect for adventurous dogs and their humans. Staten Island’s Greenbelt Trail offers over 35 miles of scenic trails, providing the perfect escape from the bustling city. For a more challenging hike, head to Inwood Hill Park in Upper Manhattan, where you and your pup can explore rugged terrain and take in breathtaking views of the Hudson River. Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, and waste bags to ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience for both you and your furry friend.

Bonding Through Play: Interactive Games for Dogs in NYC

Engaging in interactive games is a fantastic way to bond with your four-legged companion while also providing mental stimulation. NYC offers a variety of dog-friendly establishments that cater to playtime and socialization. Boris & Horton, mentioned earlier, not only serves delicious food but also hosts trivia nights, movie screenings, and other interactive events where dogs are more than welcome. Additionally, throw a frisbee or play a game of fetch in one of the city’s many parks, and watch your dog’s tail wag with delight.

Oceanside Adventures: Beaches Where Dogs Can Frolic in NYC

Who says dogs can’t enjoy some sand and surf? NYC is home to several beaches where dogs can frolic in the sun and splash in the waves. One popular beach is Rockaway Beach in Queens, which allows dogs between October 1st and May 1st. Prospect Park Dog Beach, located within Prospect Park, provides a sandy oasis where your pup can cool off during sweltering summer days. These beaches offer an excellent opportunity to combine outdoor fun, exercise, and relaxation for both you and your furry friend.

Exploring the City on Paws: Dog-Friendly Walking Tours in NYC

NYC is filled with history, cultural landmarks, and hidden gems, and discovering them alongside your four-legged friend can make for an unforgettable experience. Several companies offer dog-friendly walking tours that cater to both you and your pup’s interests. The Central Park Paws Tour takes you through the iconic Central Park, showcasing famous landmarks and providing historical insights. Another option is the Lower Manhattan Tour, where you and your furry companion can explore the vibrant streets of downtown and visit iconic sites such as Wall Street and the Statue of Liberty.

Pawsitively Pampered: Luxurious Pet Spas and Grooming Salons in NYC

Every pup deserves some pampering, and NYC has a variety of luxurious pet spas and grooming salons to cater to your dog’s needs. D Pet Hotels Chelsea offers a range of services, including grooming, spa treatments, and even pet chauffeur services. The Dog Store in the Upper East Side provides a serene and stylish environment where your pup can enjoy professional grooming and spa treatments. Treat your dog to a day of relaxation and rejuvenation at one of these upscale establishments, and they’ll strut the streets like a true pampered pooch.

A Treat for Every Pup: NYC’s Best Dog Bakeries and Treat Shops

What better way to indulge your furry friend than with delicious treats from some of NYC’s best dog bakeries and treat shops? Biscuits & Bath, a renowned dog daycare and grooming center, also offers a wide selection of freshly baked treats made with high-quality ingredients. For a truly extravagant experience, visit The Salty Paw in the Financial District, where you’ll find delectable goodies ranging from gourmet pupcakes to homemade ice cream. These delectable treats are sure to make your pup’s tail wag with delight.

Fetching Fun: Dog-Friendly Events and Festivals in NYC

Throughout the year, NYC hosts a variety of dog-friendly events and festivals that celebrate our furry friends. The Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held at Madison Square Garden, showcases the beauty and athleticism of purebred dogs. The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is a must-attend event that features creative costumes and adorable pups strutting their stuff. These events not only provide entertainment for you and your pup but also offer an opportunity to meet fellow dog lovers and immerse yourself in the vibrant dog-friendly community of NYC.

Training Tips and Tricks for a Well-Behaved City Dog

Navigating the busy streets of NYC requires a well-behaved and obedient dog. Luckily, the city offers numerous training facilities and resources to help you and your pup master basic commands and behavioral skills. Dog training classes, such as those offered by Andrea Arden Dog Training, can help teach your dog essential manners and provide socialization opportunities. Additionally, online resources and local dog training clubs are great places to find tips, tricks, and expert advice on raising a well-behaved city dog.

Pawsome Adventures: Day Trips from NYC for Dogs and Their Humans

While NYC has a plethora of dog-friendly activities, sometimes it’s nice to get away from the hustle and bustle and explore new surroundings. Fortunately, there are several pet-friendly day trip destinations just a short drive away. Fire Island, with its pristine beaches and nature trails, is a tranquil getaway perfect for a day of relaxation and exploration. The Mohonk Preserve in New Paltz offers breathtaking hiking trails and scenic views that both you and your furry friend will appreciate. These day trip adventures provide an opportunity to escape the cityscape and create lasting memories with your beloved pup.

Outdoor Adventures with Your Canine Companion in NYC

When it comes to outdoor adventures, NYC has you covered. Alongside the dog parks and hiking trails, there are countless opportunities to explore nature with your canine companion. The Cloisters Museum and Gardens, located in Fort Tryon Park, not only offers art and cultural exhibits but also provides picturesque gardens perfect for leisurely strolls with your pup. Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn is another fantastic option, with its rolling hills, ancient trees, and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. These outdoor adventures will not only provide exercise for your pup but also allow both of you to recharge and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Finding Serenity: Tranquil Parks and Gardens for Dogs in NYC

In the midst of the bustling city, finding moments of tranquility can be a welcome respite. NYC has several hidden gems that offer peaceful parks and gardens where you and your pup can escape the chaos. The Conservatory Garden in Central Park is a serene oasis featuring beautifully manicured lawns, vibrant flower displays, and picturesque fountains. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is another must-visit spot, offering a vast array of flora and fauna, along with designated areas where dogs are welcome. These peaceful parks and gardens provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation, meditation, and quality time spent with your furry companion.

Capturing Memories: Pet Photography Studios in the Big Apple

No adventure is complete without capturing the memories. NYC is home to several pet photography studios that specialize in capturing the unique bond between you and your furry friend. Barkbox, known for its monthly subscription boxes, offers a photography studio where professional photographers will capture your pup’s personality in stunning portraits. Pet portraits are not only a beautiful way to immortalize your furry friend but also serve as a cherished keepsake for years to come.

Staycation with Your Pooch: Dog-Friendly Hotels and Accommodations in NYC

Whether you’re visiting NYC from out of town or simply want to treat yourself and your pup to a staycation, there are plenty of dog-friendly hotels and accommodations throughout the city. The Kimpton Hotel Eventi, located in Chelsea, not only welcomes pets but also provides pet beds, bowls, and even a nightly wine reception for pet owners. The W New York in Union Square is another pet-friendly option with luxurious amenities and a central location. These accommodations ensure that both you and your furry friend can experience the best of NYC hospitality during your stay.

Socializing Spotlights: Meetups and Playgroups for Dogs in NYC

Socialization is key for a well-rounded and balanced dog, and NYC offers numerous opportunities for your pup to interact with other dogs in a controlled and supervised environment. Meetup.com is a fantastic resource for finding dog-related events and playgroups. The Central Park Pugs Meetup Group brings together pug enthusiasts for playdates and socializing, while the NYC French Bulldog Meetup Group provides an opportunity for French Bulldog owners to connect and share their love for the breed. These meetups and playgroups are not only fun for your pup but also provide a sense of community and camaraderie among dog owners in NYC.

Furry Fashionistas: Boutique Pet Stores with Trendy Accessories in NYC

The best things to do with a dog in NYC

Join our canine pal Hank as he shows you the best things to do with a dog in NYC

Will Gleason

NYC is as much a playground for pets as it is for people. With dog-friendly restaurants , pet-friendly hotels and awesome dog parks , your furry friend will never be bored in the city. You can even take your very good boy or girl out for some well-deserved pampering. To show you how it’s done (and make your best pal a little jealous), we recruited our friend Hank, a former foster at Social Tees Animal Rescue , to check out some of the best things to do with a dog in NYC.

If Hank’s adventures give you all the feels but you don’t yet have a four-legged friend of your own to experience a doggy day like this, check out these places where you can adopt a dog in NYC . We promise, you won’t regret it!

An email you’ll actually love

Things to do with a dog in NYC

Breakfast at The Wilson

1.  Breakfast at The Wilson

There are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants in New York , but not many boast a full-page menu dedicated exclusively to your four-legged companion. If yours has been extremely good, reserve a table at The Wilson and spend a leisurely morning enjoying brunch prepared just for the two of you. (Yes, there’s also food for humans.) Hank hopped up to the table, made himself at home in one of the comfortable chairs and barely fidgeted. (What a star.) Then, he went to town on two dishes off the dog’s-only menu: the 16-oz grilled ribeye steak and the grilled chicken breast, both served with baby vegetables. Dessert (a pupsicle) is available, but Hank is watching his figure.

Calming reiki massage with New York Dog Nanny

2.  Calming reiki massage with New York Dog Nanny

One of the top canine daycares in the city, New York Dog Nanny offers plenty of the services that you’d expect (walks, healthy meals). It also offers some more esoteric options. For instance, as part of its holistic approach to pet wellness, it provides healing reiki sessions for dogs. Typically lasting for 20 minutes, this Japanese technique involves laying hands on your furry pal’s body to balance his energy centers, relaxing the dog and purportedly helping to restore his immune system. (Note: This treatment is usually reserved for dogs weighing 35 pounds or less.) Hank relaxed, that’s for sure. He sprawled out on the floor during the session and let out some big yawns.

Coffee break at Boris & Horton

3.  Coffee break at Boris & Horton

If all dogs really go to heaven, then paradise may look a lot like Boris & Horton in the East Village. Patrons can bring dogs to chill with them while they work, socialize and snack. In this petopia for pups, they can sit with their humans at a table, walk around on their own or interact with their floppy-eared brethren. Hank immediately keyed into the social energy and sat down right in the middle of the room as yappy dogs and hard-at-work owners bustled around him. In addition to the daily menu of coffee and small bites—we recommend the grilled cheese sandwich—the café offers a full lineup of events, including adoption nights, meet-ups for specific breeds and even pet-portrait evenings, when an artist will create a likeness of your four-legged partner in crime.

Playtime at Tompkins Square Dog Run

4.  Playtime at Tompkins Square Dog Run

Of all the dog parks in New York , the oldest and largest dog run is still one of its best.  Tompkins Square Dog Run  features a state-of-the-art running area with granite sand, runs for both large and small dogs, and even small, bone-shaped pools that pups can splash in during the summer. For the non-dog visitors, there’s plenty of seating and picnic tables. But its main draws are its sheer size and the leafy surroundings that provide both sunny and shady areas for dogs to explore. Though the park was packed when we stopped by, Hank was still able to find a lovely dark corner to relax in—apparently he got his fill of socializing at the café.

Workout at Water4Dogs

5.  Workout at Water4Dogs

When it comes to splashing around in water, NYC dogs have a few places to choose from. The underground pool Water4Dogs in Tribeca, for example, provides water therapy for dogs that may benefit from the low-impact exercise, especially those recovering from surgery or who have arthritis or mobility issues. Hank was a little nervous in the pool—possibly because of his obscenely large breakfast—but calmed down a bit as long as he was being held. And he definitely loved shaking off to dry. If your dog would prefer to swim outside, you two may want to visit the Prospect Park Dog Beach, where eager swimmers can run right into the water and dog-paddle to their heart’s content.

Unwind at Do or Dive

6.  Unwind at Do or Dive

To cap off Hank’s big adventure, we stopped by one of New York’s coolest dog-friendly bars, Do or Dive .  The unique space has loads of dog-themed memorabilia on the walls, murals of badass canines, an excellent watermelon-mint margarita on tap and an expansive backyard patio. Our canine critic seemed like a regular in no time, happily easing into one of the comfy red banquettes. If you’re looking to bring your dog here, take advantage of the cheap 18 drafts on tap and the noon–7pm happy hour Monday through Friday. It’s a perfect way to end a doggone lovely day out in the city. Hank agrees.

New York City is home to 8.5 million people and over 500,000 dogs. With so many canine companions, there have to be a lot of dog-friendly places in NYC. There are dog-friendly restaurants, dog-friendly bars, and dog-friendly parks! Here are a few favorites that New Yorkers frequent.

DOG-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS IN NYC

When visiting New York, it’s tricky to find dog-friendly restaurants. NYC sadly doesn’t allow pets inside restaurants. Still, New Yorkers love their dogs so many restaurants have dog-friendly patios. For example, The Barking Dog , which has locations both in Hell’s Kitchen and Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The Barking Dog has dog-friendly patios lined with green turf so your fur-baby won’t feel resigned to hard pavement. The Barking dog offers delicious human food, including giant juicy burgers and truffle fries. When the friendly waitstaff serves the human food, they’ll also bring some treats for your pup! Your dog will beg you to come to this dog-friendly restaurant in NYC.

Another one of the dog-friendly restaurants NYC has to offer is The Wilson NYC . The Wilson enthusiastically welcomes dogs, and also has a fancy menu just for your canine companion! This dog-friendly menu includes a 16-ounce Ribeye Steak, pan-roasted salmon, and grilled chicken breast. The Wilson is also extremely photogenic. If you’re looking to transform your dog into an Instagram celebrity, the Wilson is the pinnacle of dog-friendly restaurants NYC serves up.

DOG-FRIENDLY BARS NYC

Lucky Dog is one of the most chill dog-friendly bars NYC possesses. Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Lucky Dog is a quintessential dive bar with a good beer selection. Bring your pup, and drink a cold beer on the back patio on a hot summer day.

Dog & Bone is another of a handful of dog-friendly bars with a British twist that New York City is home to. This gastropub offers food and drink with an English vibe. You can head to Dog & Bone for beers, cocktails, and even boozy ice cream floats! There’s a dartboard, and the televisions often play football and rugby matches. More importantly, Dog and Bone has a dog-friendly sidewalk cafe that stretches into a pedestrian plaza. Dog & Bone was inspired by an English bulldog named Winston, so naturally, it welcomes all dogs with delightful hospitality!

One of the dog-friendly bars NYC locals love (and wish to keep secret, so don’t tell them we told you) is Tom and Jerry’s . Tom & Jerry’s is known for a great wine and beer collection, as well as happy hour specials. Tom and Jerry’s is a cash-only establishment, so make sure to hit the ATM before you go. Dogs are welcome in this laid-back atmosphere.

DOG PARKS IN BROOKLYN

Brooklyn has some of the hippest neighborhoods in New York City. As you can imagine, it follows that some of the city’s hippest dog parks are the dog parks in Brooklyn. The Kensington Dog Run in Prospect Park has a water fountain for dogs, lots of space to frolic, high fences, and turf for a grassy feel year-round! Dogs can play in either a small or large dog area. Kensington Dog Run is definitely one of the most luxurious dog parks in Brooklyn.

Those hoping for sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline will want to check out the Brooklyn Bridge Dog Park . The Brooklyn Bridge Dog Park is a delightful area for your pet to grab some off-leash exercise while you marvel at the expansive view. You can even see the Statue of Liberty far off in the distance! The Brooklyn Bridge Dog Park is perhaps the most picturesque of the dog parks in Brooklyn.

McCarren Park is another noteworthy dog park in Brooklyn. Dogs and humans alike love Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Williamsburg has great shopping, great food, great nightlife as well as being family-friendly. McCarren Park, located in Williamsburg, is one of the most pleasant dog parks in Brooklyn. McCarren Park offers water for pups and shady seating for the owners. It’s clean and well-maintained, making the park a pleasant experience for all.

So if you find yourself in New York City with a furry friend, fear not, there’s plenty of dog-friendly places you’ll both enjoy! And while you’re here, why not get to know the city better on one of our walking tours of NYC ?

When I first brought Lady to New York, I honestly wasn’t expecting to find many things for the both of us to enjoy together. However, the more Lady and I got out to explore the streets, the more pleasantly surprised I became by exactly how much there was to do.

If I had known beforehand, I definitely would have planned my trip a little differently. If you’re thinking about bringing your dog to the city, here are some of the best things to do with your dog in NYC that will help you plan the perfect getaway with your best friend!

3 Things I Wish I Had Known Before We Visited NYC

1. you can find a great new york hotel that allows dogs.

Things to Do With Your Dog in NYC

Some of New York’s most beautiful hotels accommodate dogs, and their central locations allow you to conveniently access your favorite attractions and things to do with your dog in NYC. Here are just a few that you may want to consider!

  • Fifty NYC : With a fee of only $50 per pet, this boutique hotel lets you and your best friend enjoy everything that New York has to offer. After a full day of adventures, come back and relax in the hotel’s artistic and laid-back setting.
  • The Roxy Hotel : This glamorous accommodation is located near Soho, Battery Park City, and Little Italy. There is no additional pet fee and dogs are welcomed with organic treats from Bocce’s Bakery, bedding, water bowls, and more.
  • NYLO New York City : Both elegant and historic, the NYLO is a casual hotel located in Upper West Side. During your stay, be sure to check out the on-site dining and rooftop lounge. Pets under 50 pounds are allowed for an extra $40.

2. There are Plenty of Dog-Friendly Places to See and Explore

Black and White Border Collie in Central Park, NYC

With New York’s vibrant urban setting, I initially figured the bustling streets of the city would be a little overwhelming for Lady and we would just stick to visiting the parks. I was very wrong! Aside from the obvious Central Park, there are several places to go in New York that warmly welcome both you and your furry friends! Here are just some of my personal favorites that you won’t want to leave off your itinerary.

  • d.b.a Bar : Located in East Village, this dog bar in New York boasts an impressive beer, whiskey, and bourbon selection. Pooches both big and small are invited to join their owners inside the bar or on the lushly-decorated back patio. They also have a sweet resident cat named Maggie who is always happy to come around and interact with you while you drink.
  • Luckydog : The Luckydog is another pet-friendly bar that you’ll find in Brooklyn. The brick-walled watering hole is popular among locals and features a large drink menu, live music performances, games to play, and a backyard for dogs.
  • William Secord Gallery : If you’re a fan of beautiful art and dogs, then this gallery is a must! William Secord was the founding director of the Dog Museum of America and opened this Upper East side gallery to display 19th and 20th-century dog and animal paintings. Leashed dogs are allowed to come inside and admire the antique masterpieces alongside you.
  • Seastreak Ferry : While Ellis Island does not allow dogs, there is still a way for both of you to enjoy incredible views of the Statue of Liberty! The Seastreak Ferry transports humans and dogs alike from E. 35th Street to Wall Street, Jersey City, and the Hoboken area. During the ride, you’ll enjoy great views of New York and Lady Liberty herself. The Staten Island Ferry also allows small dogs and provides even more great ways to see the city and its most famous landmark.
  • Tawny Tours NYC : Many walking tours in New York City allow your pets to come along, but no tour gives you a dog-friendly experience quite like Art Zuckerman’s Tawny Tours. He and his golden retrievers organize tours through many of the concrete jungle’s most famous neighborhoods while making stops at dog-friendly restaurants in New York City and nearby dog parks. It’s the best way for you and your four-legged friend to get to know The Big Apple together. Tours start at $35 and require a reservation, so be sure to call ahead!

3. Dogs are Indeed Allowed on the Subway

Things to Do With Your Dog in NYC

Since I was initially under the impression that dogs were not allowed on the subway, Lady and I made the trek from Times Square all the way to Central Park by walking. While there was plenty for us to look at, my feet were aching before we even started exploring the park. Imagine my joy when I was chatting with a local and she informed me that I actually could bring Lady into the subway!

Formally, the New York subway’s pet policy is that dogs can board the train only if they can fit in a small bag or carrier. However, since New York is abundant with geniuses, local pet owners and visitors have accepted this challenge and gotten creative with this policy.

Things to Do With Your Dog in NYC

Technically, they are following the rules! XD

Since Lady is a small dog, I just held her in my arms during our rides on the subway. She didn’t mind the crowds or loud noises, and other riders were always more than happy to give her a few pats and tell her what a pretty girl she is (and they’re not wrong!).

If the subway isn’t for you, there are still options for you and your pup to get around the city. Taxis are allowed to pick up dogs, but it is up to the driver to decide if they want to transport you. Most taxi drivers don’t have a problem with it.

The same policy applies to transportation apps like Uber and Lyft. Just be sure to message your driver ahead of time to ensure they’re alright with your furry friend riding along. The Metro-North train also allows dogs as long as they are leashed and well-behaved.

Our trip to New York City was a whirlwind learning experience. I was hesitant about bringing my dog to the big city at first, but now I’m so glad that I did. We had a wonderful time and saw so many places that only NYC can supply. Now that you’re more prepared and informed than I was, are you ready for a trip to New York City? Let me know how your vacation goes and if there are any other things to do with your dog in NYC that I missed!

Also, don’t forget to check out even more exciting dog-friendly destinations that Lady and I have given our paw-stamp of approval! You also won’t want to miss our best pet health and safety tips that you can use while on the road or at home.

Happy Travels!

The Best Things to Do with Your Pet While Exploring NYC’s Streets

New York City is the United States of America’s most popular tourist destination, with more than 50 million visitors trotting across the globe each year to see The City That Never Sleeps. One thing’s for certain: there’s a growing number of furred visitors in that demographic who look forward to exploring NYC on four legs. As an increasingly pet-friendly tourist destination, NYC anticipates more pet and pet-parent tourists than ever before.

If you love traveling with your dog or cat and you intend to hit up NYC’s concrete jungles together, below are a few good ideas for what to do. Book a ticket to the Big Apple, pack some of PrideBites’ best pet products in your suitcase, and scour the streets of New York with your pet in tow.

Head to One of NYC’s Pet-Friendly Parks

No visit to New York City would be complete without a stopover at one of its famous parks. You and your pet will be able to take a good break from the streets, as well as get some fresh air, at locations like Central Park, Madison Square Park, and Bryant Park.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you and your four-legged friend can take a short hike together on trails like that of Inwood Hill Park. Tourists with dogs can also journey to one of NYC’s enclosed dog parks, like St. Nicholas Dog Park, Washington Square Dog Park, and Tompkins Square Dog Run, for some safe off-leash fun.

Look for Pet-Friendly Event s in One of NYC’s Art or Cultural Establishments

Nature isn’t the only place where your pet can feel at home. Some of New York City’s famous art and cultural establishments allow pets or are open to pets for certain events.

For example, while The American Kennel Club’s Museum of the Dog only admits service dogs and guest demonstration dogs during regular hours, the museum sometimes schedules dog-friendly events that are open to the pooch-owning public. Search for pet-friendly establishments like museums, galleries, and studios, and find out what their specific admission guidelines and rules are.

Sign Up for a Pet-Friendly Walking Tour

If you’d love to walk through the Big Apple in the company of other pets and pet enthusiasts, there’s also the option of signing up for one of New York City’s pet-friendly walking tours. Some walking tour groups have become famous within NYC for choosing a variety of interesting, hospitable, and pet-friendly stops. Look for recommendations from social media or fellow pet parent tourists and see what you need to do to sign up for a walking tour.

Attend a Meet-Up with Other Pet Parents

It’s also possible to attend social events that are exclusively for other pets and pet parents such as meet-ups and walks for particular pet breeds. When you and your pet are in NYC, find out whether you can make time in your schedule for a pet meet-up at a park, restaurant, or other key location in the city. Relish the time to make friends, learn more about New York’s culture, and share your love for animals with a welcoming community.

Snap Photos with Your Pet at One of NYC’s Iconic Landmarks

Last but not least, it would be a great idea to embark on a series of photo ops with your pet at some of New York City’s most famous spots. Pet-friendly ferries like the Seastreak Ferry and the Staten Island ferry may allow you to take beautiful seaside photos with your pet, with Lady Liberty in the background. You can also walk your pet across the Brooklyn Bridge and take a selfie or two together as long as you keep them leashed and close to you.

Article Contents

1. Grab a Cup of Jo

Cafes and coffee houses are perking up and realizing that dog moms and dads out for a walk need a caffeine boost too. Many are installing doggy windows where you can order your lattes and cold brews and sit outside or take them to go. No need to enter, just walk up to the window with your pup.

Try Boris & Horton, over on the Lower East Side, Coffee & Cream (by OddFellows) in Nolita, or RISE Coffee in LES.

2. Go to a Meet Up

Meetup.com is full of dog meet up groups that host events for all types of dogs and/or owners. There are meet ups by breed (Pug, Doberman, Shiba Inu, Corgi, Beagle, etc), dog size (small dog social group, toy dog play group, etc), neighborhood (the Uptown & Bronx small dog play group, North Brooklyn Dog Meet Up, etc) and/or activity level (Positive Pittie Pack Walk, NYC Dogs do Doga, etc). There are even social specific clubs, like Gay Dog Dads Play Date, and  20-somethings with Dogs. There’s something for everyone.

Here’s a comprehensive list of dog groups and meet ups throughout the city that are free to join:  Dog Groups and Meet Ups in New York City .

3. Take a Hike

Hiking in New York City?! Yup!

Visit Inwood Hill Park, the only forest left on the island of Manhattan. It has three trails, rock formations, and a view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. It’s also home to tulip trees, oaks, and maples, as well as Manhattan’s last salt marsh. It’s also only a subway ride away; take the 1 train to 215th Street.

We also recommend Hound Hikes, dog-friendly guided tours that provide an insider’s look at some of the most iconic features of Central Park.

These tours, led by a Central Park Conservancy guide, show people the amazing scenic, sculptural and architectural elements that the park has to offer. There are 8 to 10 Hound Hikes offered per year, with themes like a tour of the North Woods, or of Iconic Views within the park.

Hound   Hikes  are a benefit for members of the Central Park Conservancy, and memberships begin at $50.

If you’d like to check out other boroughs, check out our list of  5 Dog-Friendly Hikes in NYC , where we list a different dog-friendly hike in each borough.

4. Go Out to Eat

New York offers up some of the best cuisines from all over the world, and you don’t have to miss out if you’re visiting with your pup. There are plenty of dog-friendly places to grab a bite to eat and/or a drink . Our favorites include Pier i Cafe for frosé and burgers, and D.B.A. for draft beers.

5. See Some Art

Art is all around you in New York, much of it easily accessible as public art all over the city.

Check out the Bowery Graffiti Wall in the Lower East Side, or The Bushwick Collective, in, you guessed it, Bushwick.

If you’re interested in learning more, you can take one of the many street art tours offered (for free!), including the Lower East Side street art tour and the Bushwick Graffiti and Street Art.

If you’re looking for a more formal scene, head to the William Secord Gallery on 15th street. They specialize in 19th and 20th century dog and animal paintings, and are a popular destination for those interested in original dog paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and more. Unlike most museums in NYC, they welcome all leashed pets, as long as you make an appointment.

And we can’t forget the Museum of Dog! Run by the American Kennel Club, the Museum of the Dog features canine-related artwork. They have a great permanent collection, as well as regular exhibits and many dog-related events. They open their doors to dogs a few days a month, with Furry Fridays.

6. Go Shopping

Dog-friendly shopping in NYC is totally possible since many of the biggest department stores allow dogs. You can visit the historic Macy’s in Herald Square, home to the Thanksgiving Day Parade, or the swanky Bloomingdale’s in Midtown.

Check out a list of other stores that also welcome four-legged friends.

7. Take a Tour

NYC is a pedestrian-friendly city rich in history and culture, so it’s only natural to take a walking tour while here. They’re informative, fun, and many are dog-friendly. If you’re on a budget, there are many free or pay-what-you-wish tours available. Otherwise, check out one of the other many companies available, like New York Tour, Broadway Up Close, or Real New York Tours. You can even take a food tour; Nice Guy Tours has a food truck & cart tour that lets dogs tag along.

If you want a super dog-friendly experience, call tour operator Art Zuckerman . He organizes tours of NYC neighborhoods that include stops at dog parks and dog-friendly restaurants.

8. Go To Trivia

What’s better than trivia? Trivia with dogs all around!

Puppybowl referee Dan Schachner hosts a weekly trivia night at NYC dog cafe Boris & Horton. It’s $10 to play, and the money goes to a different dog rescue every week. Play, drink, eat, and win some prizes!

Note: Trivia happens at different times throughout the year. Check out our dog-friendly event calendar to see what other fun stuff they’re offering.

9. Hit the Water

Subway and bus aren’t the only ways to get around NYC. Grab your pup and take a ride on the East River.

The NYC Ferry has 6 routes stopping in 4 boroughs, and allows caged and/or muzzled dogs. A one-way fair will cost you $2..75, and dogs ride free. Hop on to head to places like DUMBO, Astoria, or the Lower East Side.

The Staten Island Ferry is also dog-friendly, allows caged and/or muzzled dogs, and is free!

11 Dog-Friendly Activities in NYC

10. Take an Agility Course

Agility is a fun way to exercise and bond with your dog. Plus, it’s an active way to train your dog beyond sit and roll over. Train your pooch to jump through hoops, crawl under bars, and walk the plank!

Check out the Doggie Academy or Andrea Arden. Want to step things up a notch? Check out Go Fetch Run, who offer a fitness class for humans and their dogs by combining strength, agility, and cardio through circuit training, trail running, and even an obstacle course.

We’ve compiled a list of the best dog agility classes the city has to offer here .

The Ultimate New York City Pet-Friendly Travel Guide

The best pet-friendly spots are in New York City and we’ve got the scoop on some of our favorites!

NYC with dogs

Being a pet parent comes with a lot of perks—like ordering off the secret pet menu and making friends at the neighborhood dog-friendly pub with the local pups and their humans. Wondering where these magical pet-friendly spots are? They’re in New York City and we’ve got the scoop on the best ones.

But before packing your bags and jetting off to NYC with your pet, consider if your pet will enjoy traveling to the hustle and bustle of a city . Your pet might need to ride public transit, take a taxi , and see a lot of friendly but unfamiliar faces. If that all sounds like something you and your pet will enjoy, then add these must-visit NYC pet-friendly spots to your itinerary!

8 Must-Visit Pet-Friendly Spots In NYC

Breakfast, brunch, or dinner: the wilson.

dog eating at the wilson

If slurping oysters while your pet gobbles down their own grilled steak is your idea of a night out on the town, then The Wilson may be the spot for you. Seated on the open-air terrace or side patio, you’ll be handed two menus: a dog menu and a human menu. Filled with all-American staples and seafood plus homemade treats like pupsicles and biscuits, you and your furry BFF are sure to head home happy and full. Got an adventure cat in tow? We won’t tell them the menu says “dog” if you don’t.

A Quick (And Delicious) Bite: Shake Shack

Shake Shack dog-friendly

Thought secret menu items were just for humans? Think again, and then head to the nearest Shake Shack for a burger, milkshake, and a pup-approved Pooch-ini. If you find yourself at the original Shake Shack in Madison Square, don’t miss a play session at Jemmy’s Dog Run just next door.

Sightseeing: The Brooklyn Bridge Self-Guided Tour

dog on brooklyn bridge

There are plenty of walking tours for you and your furry travel companion. But walking the Brooklyn Bridge to or from Manhattan is one you might not want to miss. Use a free online tour or take in the sights on your own. Either way, before you go consider that this is a busy attraction, and the pedestrian walkway can get busy.

Boozy Brunch: The Barking Dog

barking dog fountain

The mission behind this quaint Upper East Side restaurant is simple—“to create a friendly neighborhood restaurant where people and their dogs felt at home.” Faced with NYC rules restricting pets from entering restaurants, the owner decided they would offer the most pet-friendly patio around. The brunch menu offers up fluffy pancakes and mimosas. Or visit any time of day for classic burgers, wraps, and salads.

Café: Boris & Norton

Boris and Norton interior

You absolutely can’t visit New York City with your pup and not spend time at Boris & Horton , New York’s first dog-friendly café. Named after a beloved “unique-looking” pit bull terrier mix and a “mystery-breed” pup, Boris & Horton doesn’t just set the bar for sipping coffee with your pup (or beer and wine). This dog-friendly café in the East Village puts their best paw forward with events like pet portrait painting, adoption events, and doggy ice cream socials. Plus, don’t miss taking home a souvenir of Boris & Horton’s homemade freeze-dried treats for dogs.

Park: Prospect Park

Prospect Park

Taking your pet to see Central Park is a must, and with 842 acres to explore, you are sure to find the perfect grass to romp around in. Central Park doesn’t have fenced-in off-leash dog parks, but there are designated off-leash areas . Otherwise, remember to carry your proof of vaccination and always have your pet on a leash.

But if you’re looking for the most dog-friendly park in NYC, head over to Brooklyn to Prospect Park. The park boasts 526 acres of green space including the 90-acre Long Meadow, a picnic house, zoo, boathouse, Brooklyn’s only lake and forest, and a bandshell. There’s an off-leash dog park , a swimming beach for pups , and special hours for off-leash romping in designated areas . Before you head to the park, check out FIDO for locally organized doggy events .

Bar: Lucky Dog

Lucky Dog Bar

A tried-and-true hangout for local pups and their parents, this Williamsburg bar is the place to be when you and your pup want to see friendly, furry faces. The unsuspecting hangout boasts a pet-friendly patio and invites your dog to mingle among friends at the inside bar, too.

Luxury Hotel: The James NoMad

hotel dog

If you and your pet are just passing through the Big Apple, then you’ll need a pet-friendly hotel to rest your paws. If it’s a luxury stay you and your pet want, then look no further than the pet-patisserie catered The James NoMad . There’s a one-time fee of $150 to stay with your cat or dog, but you’ll both be in for a culinary and restful treat. In addition to pet room service, each room comes furnished with pet supplies, a pet-friendly destination map, and organic treats. If you need to visit establishments that aren’t pet-friendly, just call the front desk for daycare, a walker, or sitter arrangements.
