How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 7 and 8

The following steps work are the only way to use Safari's Find on Page feature on iOS 7 and 8 :

Begin by opening the Safari app and browsing to a website

Once the site is loaded in Safari, tap the address bar at the top of the Safari window.

In that address bar, type the text you want to search for on the page.

When you do that, a number of things happen:

  • In the address bar, URLs may be suggested based on your browsing history .
  • Beneath that, the Top Hits section offers additional suggestions.
  • The Suggested Website is delivered by Apple based on your Safari settings (you can tweak these in Settings > Safari > Search ).
  • After that are a set of suggested searches from Google (or your default search engine), followed by matching sites from your bookmarks and search history.

But where's Find on Page? In most cases, it's hidden off the bottom of the screen, either by the onscreen keyboard or by the list of suggested results and searches. Swipe all the way to the end of the screen and you'll see a section titled On This Page . The number next to the header indicates how many times the text you searched for appears on this page.

Tap Find to see all uses of your search word on the page.

The arrow keys move you through the uses of the word on the page. The X icon lets you clear the current search and perform a new one.

Tap Done when you're finished searching.

In these earlier versions of the iOS, the process is a bit different:

Use Safari to browse to a website.

Tap the search bar in the top right-hand corner of the Safari window (if Google is your default search engine, the window will read Google  until you tap it).

Type in the text you're trying to find on the page.

In the list of search results, you'll first see suggested search terms from Google. In a grouping below that, you'll see On This Page . Tap that to find the text you want on the page.

You'll see the text you searched for highlighted on the page. Move between instances of the text you searched for with the Previous and Next buttons.

When visiting a web page in the Safari app, select the Share button (it looks like a square with an upward-facing arrow in it). Scroll through the Share menu and select Find on Page, then type in the word or phrase you want to search for and select Search .

Navigate to the web page in the Chrome app and select More ... > Find in Page . Enter your search word or phrase in the text field in the top-left, and Chrome will highlight matching words or phrases in yellow on the web page.

Using ‘Find on Page’ Function on iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

Have you ever been in a situation where you need to find a specific word or phrase on a webpage while using your iPhone? Well, the good news is that there’s a simple way to do that, similar to the ‘Control F’ function on a desktop. Using the ‘Find on Page’ feature on your iPhone, you can easily search for and highlight all instances of a word or phrase on a webpage. Let’s dive into how you can use this handy function.

Step by Step Tutorial: Using ‘Find on Page’ Function on iPhone

Before we begin the steps, let’s understand what we are about to do. The ‘Find on Page’ function allows you to search for specific text on a website you are viewing through Safari, or any other web browser on your iPhone. It’s like having a magnifying glass that highlights all the places where the word or phrase appears.

Step 1: Open Safari and Navigate to the Website

Open the Safari app on your iPhone and go to the webpage where you want to find a specific word or phrase.

Navigating to the website is the first step because the ‘Find on Page’ function works on an active web page. Make sure you are on the right page where the text you want to find is supposed to be.

Step 2: Tap the Share Button

Once the webpage is fully loaded, tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen.

The Share button may look like a square with an arrow pointing upwards. It’s used for sharing links, but it’s also where you’ll access the ‘Find on Page’ feature.

Step 3: Select ‘Find on Page’

Scroll down the list of options that appear after tapping the Share button and select ‘Find on Page.’

If you don’t see ‘Find on Page’ immediately, you might need to scroll to the right to find it. It’s usually in the second row of options.

Step 4: Type in the Word or Phrase

A search bar will appear at the top of your keyboard. Type in the word or phrase you want to find on the webpage.

As you type, the function will start to highlight the word or phrase on the webpage. If there are multiple instances, they will all be highlighted.

Step 5: Use the Navigation Arrows

Use the navigation arrows in the search bar to jump to the next or previous instance of the word or phrase on the page.

The arrows are a great way to quickly move through the text without having to scroll manually. It saves time and ensures you don’t miss any occurrences.

After you complete the action, every instance of the word or phrase you searched for will be highlighted in yellow on the webpage. You can tap any of the highlights to jump directly to that section of the page.

Tips for Using ‘Find on Page’ Function on iPhone

  • If the keyboard doesn’t appear when you select ‘Find on Page,’ tap on the search bar to make it appear.
  • You can dismiss the ‘Find on Page’ search bar by tapping “Done” or by scrolling through the webpage.
  • The ‘Find on Page’ feature is case-insensitive, meaning it does not differentiate between uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • If you want to search for another word or phrase, simply clear the search bar and type in the new text.
  • Remember that ‘Find on Page’ only works for the text that has been loaded on the webpage. If the website requires you to click “load more” or has multiple pages, you may need to repeat the search on each section or page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do i access ‘find on page’ if i’m using a different browser.

The steps are similar for other browsers. Look for a ‘Share’ button or an option menu, which usually has three dots or lines, and you should find a ‘Find on Page’ or ‘Find in Page’ option.

What if the ‘Find on Page’ option does not appear?

Make sure you’ve scrolled through all the options in the Share menu. If it still doesn’t appear, try refreshing the webpage or restarting the Safari app.

Can I use ‘Find on Page’ for PDFs or documents on iPhone?

‘Find on Page’ is primarily for web content. However, most PDF and document viewers on iPhone have their own search functions you can use.

Why are some words not being highlighted when I use ‘Find on Page’?

The text may be part of an image or a special script that is not recognized as searchable text by the function. Try zooming in to see if it’s an image.

Can I use ‘Find on Page’ in apps or only in web browsers?

‘Find on Page’ is mainly a web browser feature. However, some apps with built-in browsers or text viewing may offer a similar search function.

  • Open Safari and navigate to the website.
  • Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select ‘Find on Page.’
  • Type in the word or phrase.
  • Use the navigation arrows to jump between instances.

So there you have it, folks! Using the ‘Find on Page’ function on your iPhone is a piece of cake once you know what to do. Whether you’re a student trying to locate a key term in an article, a professional searching for specific data on a webpage, or just someone who loves to have the power of ‘Control F’ at their fingertips, this feature is a game-changer. It not only saves time but also makes your browsing experience on your iPhone much more efficient. Remember to use the tips provided to enhance your ‘Find on Page’ skills and don’t hesitate to refer back to the FAQs if you run into any issues. Happy searching!

How to find text on a Safari webpage from your iPhone

The mobile web browsing experience has become the de facto standard for many smartphone-toting folks. According to Pew Research , one in 10 American adults is a smartphone-only internet user, without traditional broadband access.

With mobile browsing, the browser itself is often modified to make it more conducive to use on a smartphone. Unfortunately, this often makes it difficult to find certain features or tools that one may use when browsing on a desktop.

One such feature is the ability to find text on a webpage. On a standard keyboard, a user can simply type Control + F (Windows) or Command + F (Mac) to find what they’re looking for. On a smartphone, though, it’s not that simple.

Thankfully, the process for finding text on a Safari webpage on an iPhone isn’t terribly complicated. Here’s how to do it on iOS 10.3.2.

Start by opening the Safari application. Look for the icon with a blue compass and tap on it.

iphone safari how to search text

Once you have the application open, tap into the grey URL bar at the top of the screen and type in the URL of the website you want to visit. For this example, we’re going to use our favorite website, techrepublic.com. After you’ve entered the URL, tap on the blue Go button at the bottom right corner of the screen.

iphone safari how to search text

Once you’ve made it to the website, navigate to the webpage that you want to search. Once there, tap on the share button at the bottom of the screen that looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. If the button isn’t there, it could be because you’ve scrolled down. Try scrolling back up to the top of the page, and it should show back up.

From here, you should see three rows of icons. On the bottom row of icons (the white and grey ones), swipe to the left until you see the Find on Page icon and tap it.

At this point a grey keyboard with a search bar built into it should appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap in the search bar and then type the word or phrase that you want to search. The tool should then highlight all the instances of it on the page in yellow.

To navigate among the highlighted instances on the page tap the up and down arrows immediately to the left of the search bar.

When you’re finished searching, simply tap the grey Done button to the right of the search bar and the Find on Page tool will disappear.

How to Find Text on Webpage in Safari on iPhone

If you are reading a long article on the web and want to find a specific word from it using the Safari web browser on the iPhone or iPad. Then, you’re in the right place. Here’s the step by step guide, by which you can find text on Webpage in Safari on iPhone or iPad (running on iOS 14).

Finding a specific word or phrase is pretty easy on the Mac or Windows , thanks to the Ctrl+F or Command+F command. But, things are not the same on the mobile platforms. Yes, finding a text within a webpage in the Safari web browser on iPhone or iPad isn’t so obvious. But, the feature is still available, there are two different ways by which you can find text on the webpage in Safari on iOS 14.

Although the “Find on Page” feature is available on the Safari web browser, there is also a more convenient way by which you can do this, dubbed Smart Search bar. Luckily, both features can be accessed without sideloading any third-party app or extension.

Let’s dive right in.

How to Search Text Within a Webpage on Safari using Find on Page

  • At first, Open the Safari web browser on your iPhone or iPad.

If the word is repeated in this article, you can click the up/down arrow button to dive into the next section.

Find on Page is one of the best and convenient ways to find text within a webpage on Safari. But, As I mentioned earlier, there’s another way, called Smart Search bar, by which you can do the same thing on your iPhone or iPad running on iOS 13 or iOS 14.

How to Search Text Within a Webpage on Safari using Smart Search Bar

  • Open the Safari Web browser on iPhone or iPad running on iOS 13 or iOS 14.
  • Then, tap on the address bar , enter the text that you want to find on that page. (Again, I type the word “swivel”.)
  • After typing the word, it will show the number of times the “swivel” word appears on the page.
  • Tap on Find “swivel” , from the address bar to get access to the complete search results.

The Safari will show you the first instance of “swivel” word results, but you can tap on the up/down arrow button to check the next instance or use the same particular word on the same page.

The afore-mentioned ways are one of the best ways to find a particular text on a Web Page. In case you’re using Chrome or Firefox, then you can tap on the three-dots menu icon and use the Find in Page option on your iPhone or iPad running on iOS 13 or iOS 14.

With modern iOS releases, you’ll find a simple to use and easy to access “Find on Page” option in Safari, which quickly matches any searched text on a webpage in the Safari browser. This is a very useful feature that is now quite simple to access, let’s review how finding on page works in the latest versions of Safari for iOS.

Searching on Web Pages for Words & Text Matches in Safari for iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10 with Find On Page

Using Find On Page in Safari is demonstrated here on an iPhone but it works the same on Ipad and iPod touch with the latest releases of iOS:

  • Open Safari if you haven’t done so already and go to the website you wish to search (for example, the always wonderful and informative https://osxdaily.com )
  • Tap on the top of the screen to make the URL bar and sharing buttons visible in Safari, then tap on the Share button which looks like a little box with an arrow coming out of it

Share icon in Safari for iOS

• Scroll through the secondary action items in the Sharing options screen, scroll past Favorites, Add Bookmark, Copy, etc to find “Find On Page”

The Find On Page button option in Safari for iOS

  • Type the text or number to match within the current webpage to search for it, then tap on the “Search” button, the first match will immediately be visible and highlighted in the Safari browser
  • Use the arrow keys next to the search box to find next and previous text matches for your search phrase on the web page, when finished tap on “Done”

How to find text on web pages in Safari for iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9

You can clear the search phrase and search again, or just tap the “Done” button and be done with it if you found what you were looking for. In the example shown, a webpage was searched for “Abbey” and the resulted was found, matched, and highlighted on screen.

This applies to Safari in iOS 9 and newer, older releases have different methods which are linked to below.

This approach is much easier to find matching text on pages compared to what existed in prior versions of iOS on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. While matching text phrases is possible in prior versions, searching for text on web pages in Safari for iOS 8 and iOS 7 and finding matches in Safari for iOS 6 and iOS 5 was much more difficult and a bit more confusing to access, which led many users to believe the feature didn’t exist at all. While Apple has changed this option several times, hopefully the newest version which is quite easy to use and access for finding text match on any web site will stick around.

If you have any other tips or tricks for searching for matched text on a webpage with Safari in iOS on either iPad or iPhone, share them in the comments below!

Many thanks for the info… it’s also *super* handy that if you choose the “…” button at the end of the second row under the “Share” menu you can change the order of the options presented, allowing you to make “Find on page” the first choice (or second or last… where ever you want *any* of the buttons to be) when the Share menu is opened !!

I am trying to do this, but it won’t highlight it or take me to it on the page. It says there is a search result (or multiple) but it doesn’t scroll to them, tapping the Up and down arrows to move between search results also does nothing. I can’t seem to find anything about it on google. Anyone have help?

On < iOS 8, tapping in the Search space (even though it says Google or whatever your prefs have) brings up the Find on Page facility as well as the Google search bar.

On the Mac, its command+F, simple.

Good that it’s more obvious, but the old method still works fine (been using it for some time).

Didn’t know about that. Thanks to the always wonderful and informative OS X Daily for the tip :)

On ipad in iOS9.2 the Find on page option is found under the hamburger menu to the right of the Share icon

This is much better than it was in prior versions, which felt like a game of hide and seek.

I use Find On Page often for research, so it’s great to have it as a real option in the sharing action menu of Safari.

While some people might not ever have a need for this feature and will never ever use it, others are likely jumping for joy after figuring out this existed. Some people scour through page after page of content in hopes of finding a specific phrase or keyword, only to never find it or give up once they’ve spent too long. Well now, you can find it with ease thanks to the Find on Page feature included in the iPhone.

The feature has been around for quite a while, but for some reason, many people don’t know about it. As mentioned earlier, everyone knew about the command on desktop and laptop computers (ctrl+f), but very few knew about this one. But not only is it included in the iPhone, it is also incredibly easy to find and use.

iphone safari how to search text

The two most popular browsers that people use on the iPhone are without a doubt Safari and Chrome. Because of that, we will show you how to use this cool feature on both of the browsers so no matter which one you prefer to use, you can still search through the text.

Searching Text in Safari on the iPhone

Because Safari is the default browser on the iPhone, there is a good chance that well over half of all iPhone users use it, so we will begin with it. All you have to do is load up the web page or site that you want to search, then hit the button on the middle-bottom of the screen (the one that has an arrow coming out of a box). Once there, simply scroll through the various options until you get to Find on Page. Click on it, and it will let you enter any word or phrase and show you all the places it appears (by highlighting them).

Searching Text  in Chrome on the iPhone

This is similar to searching on Safari, but just a little different. Once you load up the web page that you want to search, look up in the top right corner of the screen and hit the icon with the three vertically stacked buttons. Near the bottom of the drop-down menu is where you will see the Find in Page button. Once you click it, you will be able to search any word or term and Chrome will search the entire text of the page for that word or term.

So now you know something about the iPhone that not many people do, how to search text on the internet. It is incredibly easy to do (as you can see) and only takes you a few seconds, much better than scouring through each article word by word. Even if you don’t plan on using this feature, it is still something good to know.

How To : Search Real-World Text for Words & Phrases Using Your iPhone

Search Real-World Text for Words & Phrases Using Your iPhone

Safari has a convenient "Find" feature to search for specific words and phrases in a webpage, and Apple Books has a similar feature for e-books and PDFs. But those do nothing for you when searching text in the real world. Hardcover and paperback books are still very much a thing, as well as paper-based documents, and finding what you need is as simple as pointing your iPhone's camera at the page.

Imagine you're scanning through a lengthy paper document for a specific word or trying to locate a specific reference on one of the pages in a huge textbook. Sometimes the index can help if one is available, but otherwise, you need to speed read to find what you're looking for. All that ends now though.

  • Don't Miss: Find Songs by Lyrics in Apple Music for iOS 12 & Higher

Thanks to developer Omer Faruk Ozturk , we have an iOS app that can instantly scan for any word or phrase on a page in the flesh-and-blood world. All you have to do is point your camera at the document and use the app's built-in Ctrl-F (or Command-F for Mac users) feature to spot exactly what's needed.

Step 1: Install SearchCam

Ozturk's app, SearchCam, is available for free in the iOS App Store. Either look for it in the App Store on your iPhone or jump right to it with the link below. In order to install it, you'll need to be running iOS 11 or later. And the app works with and without any data connections since there's no interaction to and from any server.

  • App Store Link: SearchCam: Ctrl+F for life (free)

How to Search Real-World Text for Words & Phrases Using Your iPhone

SearchCam's user interface isn't the prettiest since it's marred by an advertisement banner on the bottom and hasn't been updated to be optimized with newer screen ratios of the iPhone X and newer. But it's simple and intuitive for even the most novice smartphone users.

Step 2: Search Real-World Documents

Open the SearchCam app, grant it access to your camera, then type in the word or phrase you're looking for in the "Search" box. Next, all you have to do is point your iPhone's camera at the book, document, pamphlet, magazine, bill, or whatever else it is you want to scan for text.

  • Don't Miss: Search for Real-World Objects Online Using Your Camera

Since the SearchCam app is basically a real-time OCR (optical character recognition) tool with an augmented reality inclination, where it's live-reading a moving image, it works right away.

Instantly, you'll notice a number of yellow boxes overlayed on the screen around the text you typed in, along with red indicator arrows underneath. These are your found items. If there are no matches to your query, nothing will appear on the screen.

How to Search Real-World Text for Words & Phrases Using Your iPhone

Step 3: Improve the Search Results

The app has two buttons on the top right for a flash and image search. The flash (left screenshot below) uses the iPhone's rear True Tone flash to light up a document. This helps in dimly lit rooms, which is necessary because SearchCam requires sufficient light to commence its search.

With image search, you can go through any of the images in your Photos app that contain words, even PDFs (right screenshot below). So if you take a picture first using any camera app, you won't have to worry about the words moving around on the screen like in real-time scanning.

SearchCam works great with colored text, colored backgrounds, legible handwriting, and even tiny text, which I found to be the most useful. However, the text surface should be relatively flat in order for the tool to work at an optimal level.

How to Search Real-World Text for Words & Phrases Using Your iPhone

One feature that's not mentioned on SearchCam's App Store page is that it works for other languages, including French, Spanish, and German (although I'm not quite sure how expansive it is). The app could use several more features to bolster its usability such as an export as PDF button, a searchable index of every word on the screen, and a built-in camera option for taking photos within the app.

Overall, students using books as references for essays and senior citizens or anybody unfortunate enough to have poor eyesight stand to benefit from SearchCam. Note that there used to be an Android app that performed a similar service, but it has since shut down for unknown reasons.

How can I search for or find text within a web page on the iPhone?

Update: iOS 9 has added a dedicated search function to Safari that allows you to search web pages for specific text.

Surprisingly, there is no native "find" function in the version of Safari that comes with the iPhone.

If you are browsing a large piece of content, and need to find a particular word or section of the page quickly, this can present a serious problem.

Refer to this post for more information about bookmarklets and how to add them to your iPhone.

There is a way to find key words in an iPod/iPhone. You could download the free Google app (its a blue app square with a white lowercase g) and when u are surfing the web and/or you are in a written document, there is a little magnifying glass logo at the bottom right corner just tap it and type the word you want to find. Its accurate, cool and precise. i use it a lot

don't listen to this clown. there is a way.

use the Search field on the top right of the Safari page where you want to search for text. tap the field, then type the text you're looking for. as you're typing, the auto-find feature will start listing instances of the text, putting the results in a wide gray box below your typing to indicate how many instances of that word are on that Safari page. It will say "On this page ('x' instances)", where 'x' is the number of times the text appears.

Text-field search Spotlight in iOS employs a basic "starts-with" search on certain text fields in the content of your device. It does not search the middle of words.

If Spotlight does not return expected results:

Ensure the text you entered in the search is correct. Try searching using the first few characters of the words you are trying to find. Review your Search Results settings to see if you excluded any searchable content by tapping General > Spotlight Search. Note: for iPhone 3G and iPod touch (2nd generation), tap Settings > General > Home > Search Results. Spotlight is not case sensitive, so you can search using uppercase or lowercase letters and get the same results. Note: Words without a space between them will be counted as separate words if each word starts with an uppercase letter. For example: Searching for "two" will be successful in "OneTwoThree", but not in "onetwothree".

To search on a page, just type quotation marks first

Anonymous replied on August 29, 2014 - 5:04pm Permalink

Yeah, so you don't need to download anything to search a page. Here's a short video link showing how to do it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7JjcZZa2oc&list=UU9CQOdT1A9JlAks0-PF5vvw

Essentially you just go to the URL/OMNIBAR like you're going to do a google search (or type in a website address) and type what you want to find; before you hit enter though, you scroll down with your finger and click "find on this page".

Pretty simple, yet somewhat hidden. :P

You may be familiar with searching for and copying text from web pages in the Safari web browser on your Mac. Did you know you can do the same thing on your iOS 11 device? Here’s how.

1.) While viewing the webpage in Safari, tap the URL bar at the top of the display window, and enter your search term using the virtual keyboard, but DON’T tap “Enter” when you’re finished.

2.) Possible results for your search term will appear as you type. Tap the results area, and then scroll to the bottom of the page.

3.) You’ll see an area titled “On This Page.” Tap the area.

The New Outlook for Windows Is Getting More Improvements

Why i refuse to upgrade my phone, how to wirelessly transfer files between windows, macos, linux, and mobile, quick links, search limitations, how to search for text messages with the messages app, how to search your text messages with spotlight, key takeaways.

  • You can only search through text messages saved within the Messages app, so deleted or cleared conversations won't be searchable.
  • In the Messages app, tap on the search bar to enter what you want to search for and view a list of top conversations that match your search.
  • To search with Spotlight, swipe downward on the Home screen and type in the search bar. Scroll down to find the Messages section for relevant search results.

Text messages serve as a handy historical record of conversations we have with others, including major events, links we share, or otherwise. Few realize that you can easily search through your entire text message history on the iPhone, which may help you in a pinch. Here's how.

Before you start your search, know that you can only search through text messages saved as conversations within the Messages app on your iPhone. This applies to both messages sent over SMS and iMessage. If you have deleted or cleared conversations within Messages in the past, they will not be searchable.

If you've synced your messages to an iPad using iCloud, you can even search your message history on and iPad.

But if you have ample history available — and many people have conversations stretching back years — then you'll have plenty to search through. There are two main ways to do it.

The best way to search through your text message history is using the Messages app. You'll be able to quickly see the most results and browse through them easily.

First, open the Messages app. If you are in a Conversation view, press the back arrow until you are on the main "Messages" screen. Note the search bar at the top.

Tap on the Search bar near the top of the screen, then type what you'd like to search for. The screen will change into a list of top Conversations that match your search.

If you'd like to see more results, tap "See All." Or if you'd like to see a result closely, tap on the conversation, and you will be taken to that position in your conversation history.

At any time you can tap on the back arrow and review the other search results, or you can clear the search bar and search for something else.

You can also search through your text message history using Spotlight Search . To open Spotlight, go to the Home screen and swipe downward from the middle of the screen with one finger.

In the search bar, type what you'd like to find in your text messages.

Search results from many different apps will appear on the screen (unless you've turned them off in Settings ). Scroll through them until you find the Messages section. Below that, you will see relevant search results from your text messages. In this case, we searched for "airspeed," and had to scroll all the way to the bottom to find our conversation result.

If you'd like, you can tap on the result to be taken to the conversation in the Messages app.

iOS 7: How to Search for Text on a Page in Safari

John Martellaro

___________________________

The first place to look is Apple's own iPad User Guide for iOS 7 which explains the new search method, both for the Internet and on the page being viewed. Here's an excerpt from page 46.

iphone safari how to search text

What happens in iOS 7, when you tap the integrated URL/Search bar at the top, is that you're instantly taken to a Favorites page. That shift in context, away from the page you're viewing, is what may cause confusion. In this example, I am visiting www.macobserver.com, and after tapping the search field, Safari looks like this:

iphone safari how to search text

How is that Favorites page defined? Apple's User Guide explains: “Have your favorites top the list. Select them at Settings -> Safari -> Favorites.

iphone safari how to search text

It does not appear that there is any way to stay on the page being searched because, apparently, with an integrated URL/Search field, Apple has to assume that you're searching the Internet, not the page. In my case, here are my (only) options:

iphone safari how to search text

Just tap on the search field and start typing the search term. For example, even though it isn't being displayed, I'm searching the home page of The Mac Observer for the term “Gamet.”  At the bottom of this list is a gray bar with the notation: “On this page.” If you tap the search term below, Safari will search for the first occurrence of that term on the page you were viewing.

iphone safari how to search text

In my example here, it found Jeff Gamet's name highlighted in yellow below. At last, Safari is back to the page you're searching.

iphone safari how to search text

Finally, at the bottom of the page being searched, there is a search bar that allows you to step through the next/previous occurrences or change the search term.

iphone safari how to search text

You can change the search term here.

Apple could have chosen to do this in several different ways, but taking the user away from the page being searched before the user expresses the search intention is what's apparently causing confusion. As with many new features in iOS 7, a little bit of practice and familiarity really helps.

Tips and Tricks for Using Find on Page in Safari

While the Find on Page feature in Safari on your iPhone is designed to make searching for specific text within a webpage quick and easy, there are a few tips and tricks you can employ to further enhance your experience. These tips will help you optimize your search and maximize the effectiveness of Find on Page.

Here are some useful tips and tricks for using Find on Page in Safari:

  • Be specific with your search terms: To narrow down the search results and find the exact information you’re looking for, try to be as specific as possible when entering your search terms. Using unique or precise keywords will increase the chances of finding the desired text.
  • Use case sensitivity: By default, Find on Page in Safari is case insensitive, meaning it will match both uppercase and lowercase letters. However, if you need to perform a case-sensitive search, ensure that you have the “Match Case” option selected in the Find on Page menu.
  • Utilize the previous and next buttons: When you have multiple matches for your search term on a webpage, use the previous and next buttons in the Find on Page menu to navigate between the results easily. This allows you to quickly review and locate the desired information without scrolling through the entire page.
  • Try alternate terms or variations: If your initial search term does not yield the desired results, consider using alternate terms or variations. Sometimes different phrasing or synonyms may help you find the specific text you’re looking for.
  • Use gestures to access Find on Page: In addition to tapping on the address bar to access Find on Page, you can also use the “pull-down” or swipe-down gesture on the webpage to instantly activate the search feature. This gesture saves you a few taps and makes the search process more seamless.
  • Be mindful of in-page content loading: If you are searching for text on a webpage that dynamically loads content as you scroll, be aware that the Find on Page feature may not highlight the newly loaded content immediately. In such cases, scroll a little further to ensure that all relevant content is loaded and included in the search results.

By keeping these tips and tricks in mind, you can improve your search efficiency and effectively utilize the Find on Page feature in Safari. Whether you’re conducting research, reviewing lengthy articles, or searching for specific information within a webpage, these strategies will help you locate the desired text more quickly and with greater accuracy.

By following these suggestions, you can enhance your browsing experience and make the most out of Find on Page in Safari on your iPhone.

  • How to use iOS’s Live Text feature

This OCR option was introduced in iOS 15 and is still handy for grabbing text from images.

By Barbara Krasnoff and Chaim Gartenberg

Illustration of an iPhone showing its lock screen on a pink and blue background.

I’m something of a hoarder when it comes to interesting facts — I’ll see something online or in a photo, and a small voice in my brain says, “You’ll be able to use that reference somewhere, somehow. Save it so you can find it later!” Which is fine if it’s just a line or two of text, but what if that info is within an image — a photo, say, or even a drawing?

Luckily, back in 2021, Apple introduced a feature in iOS 15 called Live Text, which makes it possible for iPhone users to grab text, email addresses, phone numbers, and more from images. Live Text works with both handwritten and typed text and supports a variety of languages .

Once you’ve captured text from an image, you can paste it into a document, an email, a text message, etc., just as you would any copied text. (A suggestion: you might want to proofread it before you send or post it, especially if you’ve copied handwritten text — Live Text is pretty good, but it’s not perfect.) Just press on the selected text and choose Copy. You can also select Translate if you want to translate it to another language or Look Up to get more information.

You can use Live Text with your camera app or directly from Photos or Safari. Here’s how to capture the text in these three apps.

Capture text using the camera app

One of the handiest ways of using Live Text is on documents or objects that are around you in real time. If you have an iPhone XS or later, you can use the camera app to quickly grab some text — say, the name on a product label, or of a book you want to remember to buy — and drop it into another app. You don’t even have to snap a photo. It’s very easy:

  • Open the camera app and point it at the text you want to copy. You’ll see a faint outline around the text, and a live text button will appear in the corner of the viewfinder.
  • Hit the button, and you’ll get a pop-up with the text inside. Highlight the part of the text you want to copy (or hit Select All) and choose Copy.
  • If there is an email address, phone number, or link, you will be given the option of interacting with it directly.

Capture text from photos

If you’re viewing any pictures with text in the Photos app, you can select and interact with text there. It works just like selecting actual text anywhere else on iOS: tap and hold on the text in an image and you’ll see the familiar-looking blue highlights pop up.

The search bar in Photos will also search for text within images in your photo library, which is handy if you know you took a screenshot or photo of a receipt and just aren’t sure when. Once you find it, you can copy it using the steps above.

Capture from web images in Safari

Text can also be selected directly from images on the web in Safari. To grab text, just highlight the text in the image as you would any text, and hit the Copy button.

How to transfer your messages from an iPhone to your new Android Phone.

Mar 28, 2024

  • Twitter / X

Switching to a new Android from an iPhone doesn’t mean leaving your iMessage and WhatsApp chats behind. You can safely copy and transfer all your text and WhatsApp messages to your new phone, and that means you can feel more confident when you make the switch to Android. Once you do, you can start enjoying the advantages of using Messages by Google, including Smart Actions, RCS messaging, and end-to-end encryption.

Easily transfer text messages to your new Android phone.

Android makes it easy to transfer text messages to your new phone. In just a few simple steps, you can set up your new Android phone and copy messages and other data from your iPhone.

  • Turn on your new Android phone.
  • When prompted, connect your new Android phone to your iPhone using a lightning to USB-C cable. If you have an older iPhone, you may need a USB-A to USB-C adapter. Note that messages, apps, and other select data can only be transferred by cable and not via Wi-Fi.
  • Follow the instructions and choose the data you want to copy to your new Android, including messages. You won’t be able to repeat this step after you finish setup, so choose everything you want to transfer.
  • Disable iMessage  on your old iPhone.

If some text messages appear missing after transfer, it might mean that you have a lot of data that needs to be processed by the system. Don't worry. It should show up after some time. If it doesn't or you experience errors, rest assured that your old iPhone still holds a copy of your data just in case you need to try again.

And that’s it. It’s really that simple. In just a matter of minutes, you can transfer all your text messages—and the memories they carry—from an iPhone to your new Android phone.

Transfer WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android.

When you copy text messages to your new Android phone, you can also transfer your WhatsApp chats in the same swoop. If you choose to copy apps and data from an iPhone to your Android during the transfer phase, WhatsApp will be included. This will also allow you to transfer apps like Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, and Discord.

Transferring WhatsApp from iPhone to Android includes individual and group chats as well as your chat history. Android will also migrate your account information, profile photo, media, and settings. The only data you won’t be able to copy to your new phone are peer-to-peer payment messages, call history, and statuses.

Follow these steps to transfer your WhatsApp chat history from an iPhone to your new Android device.*

  • Begin the setup process and choose to copy apps and data.
  • Connect both phones by cable when prompted. Select Trust if a warning appears on your iPhone.
  • Sign into your Google Account on your Android.
  • Select apps along with any other data you want to transfer at the copy screen.
  • Keep your iPhone unlocked during the transfer process.
  • When prompted, use your iPhone camera to scan the QR code displayed on your Android.
  • Export data to your Android in WhatsApp iOS.
  • Disconnect both phones when the transfer is complete.
  • Open WhatsApp on your Android phone and sign in.

Follow these steps if you’re transferring WhatsApp from an iPhone to a new Samsung phone.*

  • Open Samsung Smart Switch.
  • When the QR code appears on your new Samsung phone, scan it using your iPhone camera.
  • Tap Start on your iPhone, and the process will proceed.
  • Once setup is complete, open WhatsApp on your new Samsung Android and log in.
  • Tap Import and let the process complete.

Do more with Messages by Google.

Now that you’ve transferred all your text messages from your iPhone to your new Android, keep the conversation going.  Messages by Google  helps you stay close and do more with the people you care about most.

Texting a friend and making dinner plans? Smart Reply and Smart Actions live up to their names. Smart Reply lets you respond quickly with pre-written replies like “Yes” or “Sounds good” with just one tap. Smart Actions help you put together a memorable night out, allowing you to share your location, put plans on your calendar, and more.

And Messages by Google is innovating new ways to help you get more out of your conversations. Magic Compose—an experimental feature for Google One subscribers with Pixel or Samsung phones—uses generative AI to add an extra spark of personality to your conversations. It can suggest longer and more personalised responses based on the context of the conversation, and can transform what you write into different styles and tones, like Chill, Excited, Shakespeare, and more.

iphone safari how to search text

You're browsing the web on your  iPhone , reading about Apple's iPhone 16 event when you notice that things look a little off. Images are misshapen, some information is missing. You might be wondering what's going on.

Instead, you should be asking: When was the last time you cleared your cache?

CNET Tech Tips logo showing the outlines of multiple devices

Your browser cache stores website data for faster retrieval, which can keep things a little snappier when everything matches up. But over time page elements might change -- the site might add new images, change layouts, etc. -- and that's when problems can pop up.

You can think of your browser cache like a mini fridge. It's a place where you can store items for the convenience of easier retrieval -- you don't need to trek all the way back to the kitchen for every item. However, that mini fridge gets cluttered over time, to the point where it might be difficult to find what you want or the items in the fridge have gone bad. That's why it's good to clear out your cache ( and your actual fridge ) every so often.

Whether you use  Chrome , Safari or other browsers on your iPhone, your cache builds up that digital clutter over time. Clearing your cache gives the browser a new start, which can speed up your web surfing, even on  iOS 17  or the upcoming iOS 18 . (If you're trying to get your phone to run faster, try  managing your iPhone's storage .)

Website cookies are similar, except they store information about user data, rather than data on the website itself. Clearing your cookies gives you a chance to reset those preferences, which could improve your browsing experience. Note that clearing your cache and cookies will log you out of sites, which means you'll have to log into them again and reset any preferences. The upfront investment of that time can lead to a smoother experience down the road, and it can be a useful fix if you've recently changed settings that aren't being applied properly.

Here are step-by-step guides on how to clear your cache on your iPhone based on  the browser you use .

How to clear your iPhone cache in Safari

Safari is the default browser on iPhones, and you can clear your Safari cache in a few short steps. Starting with iOS 11, following this process will affect all devices signed in to your iCloud account . As a result, all your devices' caches will be cleared, and you'll need to sign in to everything the next time you use them. Here's what to do.

1 . Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2 . Select Safari from the list of apps.

3 . Go to Clear History and Website Data.

4 . Choose Clear History and Data in the pop-up box.

Then you're set!

What happens when you clear the cache?

Clearing your cache removes the website data your phone stored locally to prevent having to download that data upon each new visit. The data in your cache builds over time and can end up slowing things down if it becomes too bulky or out of date. (My phone had about 150MB of data stored in Chrome when I checked.) Clearing that data gives sites a fresh start, which may fix some loading errors and speed up your browser. Clearing your cache also signs you out of pages, so be prepared to sign in to everything again.

How often do I need to clear my cache?

Most people only need to clear their caches once every month or two. That's generally the point when your browser will build up a cache large enough to start slowing things down. If you frequent a large number of sites, you should err on the side of clearing your cache more often.

iPhone 16: 5 AI features coming this week

At the WWDC 2024, Apple brought the AI features to the front row. It said that the new iPhone 16 will bring an improved Siri, deeply integrated with AI. Beyond Siri, AI is seamlessly integrated into various apps. The Messages and Mail apps now leverage AI to suggest appropriate responses, summarise lengthy threads, and compose emails in different tones. The Photos app benefits from AI-powered features like object removal and enhanced search capabilities. Let's look at the details:

- Siri overhaul: Siri's interface has undergone a makeover, now featuring a fresh and modern design. When invoked, Siri is accompanied by a subtle, vibrant glow that gently emanates from the screen's corners, signalling that the assistant is actively listening and ready to assist. Additionally, Siri will now be able to understand natural language more efficiently. So, the iPhone 16 will feature a personal assistant that will understand you more easily. It will also be able to solve follow-up questions or commands.

- Genmoji: Apple is introducing a innovative feature called "Genmoji" that allows users to design personalised emojis using text prompts. These custom-generated emojis will have the same visual style as standard emojis, giving users a fun and creative way to express themselves with unique and tailored symbols.

- Advanced Safari: The iOS internet browser, Safari, will now offer an easier way to discover information on the web with Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Using machine learning, Safari can surface key information about a webpage. For example, users can review a summary to get the gist of an article; quickly see the location of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark; or listen to an artist’s track right from an article about the song or album. Reader has been redesigned to offer even more ways to enjoy articles without distraction, with a summary and table of contents included for longer articles.

- Improved calculator and Notes: In the Notes app, formulas and equations entered while typing are solved instantly with Math Notes. New collapsable sections and highlighting make it easier to emphasise what’s important.
