Popayan – (pronounced Popa-jan) is the capital of the department of Cauca. It is called ‘the white city’ or Ciudad Blanca due to the color of the colonial buildings and churches in its historical center.

It’s a very relaxed, attractive city with a great climate in southern Colombia. But few foreign tourists visit Popayan. When they do it’s usually just for a one-night layover on their way to Ecuador or the Colombian archaeological site of San Agustin.

This small city merits more attention than it gets. And while it may look quiet, provincial and unmemorable it’s actually charmingly refreshing. As its promotion slogan goes, ‘ Popayan – more than just a white city’ .

This colonial city was founded by the Spanish in 1537. While there are no records of its pre-Hispanic history, it is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Colombia. During the colonial period, Popayan was an important town due to its logistical location between Lima, Quito and Cartagena. Here there were significant mines, manned for the most part with slaves from Africa, extracting gold and silver,

Great Climate

Located in southwestern Colombia, between the western and central Andean mountain ranges, Popayan has a population of 258,650. It sits at an altitude of 5,775 feet (1760 meters) above sea level, and has an average temperature of 64 degrees F. (18 °C).

Due to its altitude, the city has a very nice climate year around – warm during the day and cool at night, with a short rain shower late in the afternoon. The early settlers established sugar estates down in the hot, humid Cauca valley but went back up into the mountain town of Popayan to live and raise their families.

College Town

It’s a quiet, relaxed town that’s easy to explore.  A well-known university town, Popayan is home to 8 different state and private universities. Students are everywhere in the center and the city feels like a college town.

There are many small, family run hotels in the center, but few restaurants. Visitors complain the center is dead, lacking a vibrancy and essential services – especially in the evenings and on Sundays when it is often hard to find anything open.  But like many modern cities, the historic center houses mostly government and business offices and university buildings.

Popayan has a sizable residential area just beyond the city’s center teaming with shopping centers and restaurants. A short taxi ride up Carrrera 9 imparts a more modern Popayan with plenty of dining and shopping options.

Earthquakes

The town of Popayan has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years after major earthquakes. The last one was on a Sunday morning of March 31, 1983. Mass was being held in the Cathedral Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion on the town’s main square of Plaza Mayor. The earthquake only lasted 18 seconds but it destroyed the cathedral killing many people – a total of 267 died in the city’s earthquake. The entire town was in shambles and much of the city’s original splendor was destroyed.

Reconstruction took more than 10 years. The cathedral was rebuilt. While the city still has some ruins and empty lots, it’s hard to see any signs of the quake today. As a result of this event, t he first earthquake-seismic-design-code was established in Colombia.

Popayan’s historic downtown is rich with colonial architecture which has been preserved for more than four centuries. The cobblestone streets were almost all paved over in 1937 but current projects seek to recover the old city’s original look

It’s fun to stroll along the streets of the historic center soaking up the city’s architectural charms.

Plenty to see and do

Puente Humilladero is a beautiful bridge 785 feet (240 meters) long made up of 11 arches. The bridge crosses a fault line between the city center and the Bolivar neighborhood connecting the central and northern zones of the city. Built in 1873, the designs were prepared by the Italian friar and a German engineer. Its well-planned design and strong construction have allowed the bridge to remain intact through many earthquakes. A park by the bridge is a gathering point for students.

There are numerous churches and museums to visit in the center: the church of San Francisco, Santo Domingo, La Ermita and La Basilica with its famous Torre de Reloj, or the watchtower, which was built in the 1600s. There are many museums worth visiting like the museum of religious art and the museum of natural history.

The Morro de Tucan, or Cerro de Morro, is large hill overlooking the city. Where an ancient pre-Columbian pyramid structure once existed, today it is home to the large statue of the founder of the city. The hill offers a great lookout of the city below.  It’s a short climb to the top, but the stunning panoramas and sunset views make it a must-visit spot in downtown Popayan.

But some of the best things to see and do here lie just outside of the city.  After a day or two visit of the city, Popayan can then serve as a handy base to see the many interesting sites nearby.

Around Popayan

Thermal baths – Aguas Hirviendas at Coconuco

home travel popayan

About 15 miles (25 km.) from Popayan, on the road to San Agustin, is Coconuco a beautiful spot surrounded by green hills and waterfalls. In the mountains over the town, the magical site of Termales Aquas Hirviendas ( Thermal Baths of Boiling Waters) is found. Coconuco is only an hour bus ride outside Popayan. For $3 you can soak in the thermal pools.  Boiling pools of sulfur water are mixed with cold mountain spring water and channeled into the surrounding pools. Each pool has a different temp.

The spa ritual is: 15 minutes in the hot pool, get our, stand under a waterfall of ice-cold, mountain spring water, scream, jump back in a hot pool and repeat. There are a lot of locals here on the weekends but hardly anyone visits during the week. The locals bring boom boxes and sip Bacardi rum with Poker beer chasers pool side. There is also a volcanic spring fountain where you can drink sulfur water, they call aqua soda or soda water, which is very diuretic.

The Market of Silvia

home travel popayan

Another big draw is the indigenous market in the village of Silvia on Tuesdays when the Guambiano tribe come to market from their four villages of Pueblito, La Campana, Guambia and Caciques. There are only 12,000 people remaining in the tribe. They speak their own language and dress in their colorful, traditional garb. At the market they sell their arts and crafts, vegetables and fruit and then buy supplies like rice beans, potatoes and farm equipment to take back to their villages.

They come and go in picturesque, exhaust spewing chiva buses and congregate around the main square of Silvia. They don’t like cameras believing photos rob them of their soul. But if you buy something from them, they will indulge you and pose for a shot. From the main square in Silvia walk uphill to the church for a great view of the village below.

Parque Natural De Purace (Purace National Park)

home travel popayan

Purace park is 534 square miles (860 square km) of volcanoes, snow-capped mountains, natural springs, waterfalls, lagoons and grasslands.  A volcanic zone in the Andes, it is S.E. of Popayan, on the road to San Agustin. It’s high-tundra ( paramo ) terrain. Purace , in the indigenous Quechan language, appropriately means ‘fire mountain .

The park contains many springs like the Termales de San Juan which are immersed in virgin, Andean beauty.  There are 200 types of orchids that grow here, 30 lakes and waterfalls like the Los Guachanos Cave Park Bondon waterfalls . Major Colombian rivers like the Magdalena and Cauca originate here. It is also home to a vast array of wildlife like the spectacled bear, otters, sloths, pumas, deer, eagles and Andean condors.

With the help of an indigenous guide and a day to spare, one can hike to the crater summit of the active Purace volcano 15,000 feet (4,646 meters). It’s a four-hour, 7 km. climb to the top and takes around 3-hours to descend. Technically, it’s not a particularly hard climb but the altitude makes it harder than it should be.

Semana Santa (Holy Week of Easter)

Since the 16 th century, Popayan has been famous for its religious processions during the holy week proceeding Easter. The processions depict the passion and death of Jesus Christ. There are festivities all week long but the processions take place between Good Friday and Holy Saturday before Easter. Thousands of people from all around Colombia come to take part in the event.

Getting There

There is an airport in Popayan and one can fly in from any major Colombian airport. Or come by bus from the cities of Cali to the north or Pasto to the south – both relatively short trips.

A southern Colombian itinerary would require at least 10-12 days: 3-4 days taking in the sights in and around Popayan ; 3 days to cross the paramo of Park Purace and to visit the archeological sites of San Agustin  (a 6-hour bus trip from Popayan); 2-3 days to venture north to visit to tombs of   Tierradentro  (a 6-hour bus trip). After Tierradentro, there’s a road from heading back to Popayan (a 4- hour bus trip). One could also visit Cali from Popayan (a 3-hour bus trip) or Pasto (a 6-hour bus trip from Popayan).

9 Amazing & Unique Things To Do In Popayan (Colombia Travel Guide)

things to do in Popayan

Popayán (known as La Ciudad Blanca) is in western Colombia. It’s renowned for its white washed colonial buildings and Easter week parades. There’s so much more to this historic city and it’s surrounding area than what the usual travel blogs flag up (they tend to just focus on churches and museums). Here are the best things to do in Popayan and the most comprehensive travel guide to Popayán you’ll find.

Top things to do in Popayán

1. go on a free city walking tour.

popayan walking tour

Yes, you can visit Popayán sights such as the Humilladero Bridge and Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption yourself. But this walking tour will actually give you the history of the area. We did our walking tour in Popayán with Get Up & Go Colombia and really enjoyed it. Get Up & Go Colombia also offer free dance lessons, trekking and Spanish classes in Popayan.

On the Walking Tour, you’ll find out why all the buildings are white in Popayán. And learn about the annual Easter processions in the city, where men carry huge religious motifs weighing almost a ton through the streets.

The walking tour guides are good at getting you into areas you wouldn’t normally be able to go as a tourist such as the local university. This tour also includes a superb food aspect which is suitable for vegetarians. Win!

Price for Popayan walking tour:

Pay whatever you feel it’s worth. However, do remember the guides need to make a living. We recommend giving $10USD per person as standard if you like a walking tour in Colombia.

2. Take a dip in the hot springs and then cycle back through the beautiful countryside

hot springs popayan

This was my most favourite thing we did in the Popayán area. We went to the hot springs called Agua Hirviendo, then cycled back 30km to Popayán.

The hot springs were very sulfuric smelling, but very pleasant and surrounded by lush green mountains. A few Colombian families were in there with us, but as it was a week day it wasn’t too busy. Don’t expect these hot springs to be like a fancy spa, it’s more for locals but it’s very pleasant.

The cycle back was largely downhill and the scenery was absolutely stunning. Do note there is some up hill in there. My bum hurt for a few days afterwards, but then I am a dreadful cyclist! We cycled along quiet country roads, through the indigenous village of Coconuco and into Popayán.

We did this through a excellent tour company called Popayan Tours . They drove us to the hot springs, sorted out entrance and organised the bikes. You cycle back on your own but the area around Popayán is safe.

If you didn’t want to or aren’t able to cycle back you could do this cheaper through taking the local bus to the hot springs and back again.

Price for hot springs bike tour:

For the tour it cost us 70,000 COP each.

Alternative hot springs

There are a number of hot springs in the area. A local recommended Salinas to us. This is the most natural hot spring in the area, as it is set into the rocks. It has a waterfall (although it’s cold) and then a hot pool.

To get there you can take a public bus to Coconuco (which costs 5,000 COPs), then you need to ask a local in Coconuco how to get to Salinas. Entrance is 10,000 COPs. There is nothing on google about these hot springs, so it might be a bit of an adventure!

3. Explore Popayán Old Town

popayan sights

Now for the things most blogs will advise you to do. Here are a few sights around Popayán old town you should see:

  • Humilladero Bridge
  • Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption
  • Caldas Park
  • Iglesia San Francisco (Church)
  • Iglesia San Jose (Church)
  • Puente de la Custodia (Bridge)
  • Cerro el Morro de Tulcán (Viewpoint across the city)

If you don’t have a Colombian SIM card, download the maps.me app on your phone to help you navigate the city.

4. Visit the Popayán Natural History Museum

Natural history museum popayan

I read somewhere that the Natural History Museum (Museo de Historia Natural) in Popayán is one of the best in Colombia. If this is so, poor Colombia! However, it’s not bad to visit though.

I really liked the selection of taxidermy birds they had in the museum, particularly as most of them are local to Colombia and are often hard to spot when they are alive. There are some very impressive (and damn right weird) birds in Colombia! It’s always sad to see dead animals though, but most of the taxidermy done here took place a long time ago. There are a few random African animals in the museum too.

Price: 4000 COPs per person.

5. Climb the steaming Volcan Puracé

Purace Volcano

Volcan Puracé is one of Colombia’s most active volcanos. It is a stratovolcano located in Puracé National Park. The peak is 4,700 metres high, so is at altitude (and can get cold and wet).

Hiking Volcan Puracé is an option for those with a little more money. You can climb Volcan Puracé with a tour or independently but neither are particularly cheap.

Hiking Volcan Puracé independently

To hike Volcan Puracé independently you need to catch the first bus from the Popayan bus terminal which leaves at 5am (19,000 COP). Let the driver know you need to get off the bus at Cruce de la Mina. From there you’ll need to trek 30mins and 300m up to the ranger station at 3,300m high and pay the entrance fee of 50,000. You tend to have to get a guide, which costs around 40,000. The cost of the guide can be split with other trekkers.

The trek takes around 7 hours. It’s not a technically hard hike, but do consider the altitude. You have to make sure you are back for the last bus at 5pm. Another bus leaves earlier at 2:30pm. The return bus is cheaper for some reason. HOWEVER, these buses are terribly unreliable and might not be running. The rangers can organise you transport back or you can stay onsite as they have accommodation.

Total price to trek Volcan Puracé independently:

Around 90,000 COPs per person, plus your share of 40,000 COPs for the guide (so about 220,000 COPs for 2 people).

Hike Volcan Puracé with a tour

If you can push the boat out and don’t want to risk issues with the problematic buses after your trek, get a tour. Popayan Tours is an excellent tour operator in Popayan. They will also drive you up to 4,000m, cutting out over half the uphill distance

Price for a tour of Volcan Puracé :

1 person: 550,000 pesos

2 people: 570.000 pesos

3 people: 640,000 pesos

4 people: 710,000 pesos

5 people: 780,000 pesos

6 people: 850,000 pesos

6. Explore Puracé National Park

condors Popayan

Puracé National Park is home to huge Andean condors, waterfalls, thermal pools (not ones you can swim in though), incredible geysers and more.

Explore Puracé National Park independently

You can explore Puracé National Park independently in the same way as the volcano (see above). Again you will have to pay the entrance fee (of 50,000 COPs) and the rangers will most likely insist on a guide (40,000 COPs).

Total price to explore Puracé National Park independently :

Around 90,000 COP per person, plus your share of 40,000 for the guide (so about 220,000 for 2 people).

Tour of Puracé National Park

To properly see what Puracé National Park has to offer you might want to consider a tour. Again, Popayan Tours is an excellent and well organised local tour company. They will drive you to Puracé National Park and take you to the key sights (e.g to see the condors, visit Bedon waterfall, the San Juan thermals with geysers and the paramo area) within the park via car.

Price for a tour of Puracé National Park:

Same as above for hiking up the volcano.

7. On Tuesdays, head to the Silvia indigenous market

silvia market popayan

Silvia is a small town about 1 hour from Popayán. Most days there’s not much here, bar a plaza and a number of churches.

However on Tuesdays the place becomes a bustling market town. You can buy electronics, homeware, meat, fruit, clothing and more. On market days, you’ll find indigenous folks (the Guambiano Indians) dressed in their beautiful traditional clothing.

8. Volunteer or WWOOF (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) at a finca in the countryside

fincas popayan

Popayán is surrounded by absolutely stunning countryside. It’s green, lush and totally worth spending some time in. The best way to do that is through visiting a local finca.

Ned and Lila live outside of Popayán and have done an amazing job transforming their place into a mini farm. It’s not a huge piece of land and is fairly rustic but they are completely off grid, pretty much self sufficient for food thanks to their home grown organic food production and have a wealth of knowledge about low-impact living.

It is possible to volunteer or WWOOF at their beautiful finca. Contact Ned ([email protected]) for further information.

9. Volunteer at an observatory

observatory popayan

I’m not gunna lie, Popayán and the surrounding area is probably not that amazing for stargazing. Perhaps I was spoiled by La Serena in Chile , but when we were there in October it was cloudy. However I might be totally wrong and maybe it’s better out of the rainy season.

Anyhow, you can volunteer at Obseratorio Astronomico Sueno Paraiso . Do make sure you contact them in advance through their website or facebook page and you might want to check they cater to English speaking volunteers if you aren’t fluent in Spanish.

Eating & drinking in Popayán

salpicon payanes

So, Popayán is a bit special compared to other parts of Colombia. It has some unique (and delicious) dishes you can’t get elsewhere! Look out for these:

  • Empanaditas de pipian

These are cute baby empanadas served with spicy and peanut sauce. They are vegetarian and AWESOME!

  • Salpicon payanes

This is a very tasty drink full of berry, lulo and soursop goodness. Use your spoon to put a little hole in the top of the drink and squeeze a slice of orange into it! Yum.

Lulada is considered to be from Cali, but is totally worth trying in Popayán if you haven’t tried it yet. It’s made from the lulo fruit, lime juice, water and sugar.

  • Carantanta con hogao

Carantanta con hogao are kinda like crispy poppadoms with tomato salsa. They are very unique to the Popayán area and are a tasty snack to be shared with friends!

Best restaurants in Popayán

Popayán is known as a “city of gastronomy”, but some places are pretty pants and I was kinda disappointed. I think it got this title due to some of the traditional dishes mentioned above. All of these are great, but don’t expect streets to be lined endless amazing restaurants. There are a couple of good options though.

Mora Castilla

If you go on the Popayán Walking Tour then you will visit this place and sample the delights of the local Popayan food mentioned above. If walking tours aren’t your thing, do give this place a visit.

Restaurante Italiano Y Pizzeria

This restaurant is owned by a Swiss/Colombian couple. The pizzas are delicious!

Caracol Cafe

If you are searching for a place to have a delicious coffee and cake on a rainy afternoon (or whenever) this cafe is cozy. Both the coffee and cake is glorious, and I particularly liked the chocolate cake.

Accommodation in Popayan

Popayán (like much of Colombia) is not an expensive place to stay. You can get a bed in a dorm for around $6.50 USD per night, and a double room with a private bathroom for around $12 USD and up (depending on the time of year!).

Budget accommodation options:

We stayed at Hotel Krone , which was affordable, clean and decent.

Another good budget option is Hostel Caracol . Popayán Tours and the Caracol Cafe is part of the same building. It’s a cute hostel with friendly and helpful owners.

Push the boat out:

In Colombia you can get hotels of an amazing standard for much less than you’d pay at home. Hotel La Plazuela is an example of this. It has beautiful period features and a balcony for watching the processions if you are in Popayán over Easter.

How to get from Cali to Popayan

You can easily get a bus from the main terminal in Cali to Popayan. The official journey length is 2.5 hours, but takes more like 5 hours by the time you have spent forever getting out of Cali.

There are multiple companies offering this route, with departures every 15-30 minutes. Just ask around the various desks to find the next one. The best company is Expreso Bolivariano but they only had a bus at 6pm when we were there. All the other companies seem to have rubbish old small buses or minibuses (despite the advertising of glorious double-deckers with WiFi). Most have no suspension so expect a bumpy ride. We used Expreso Palmira and paid 19,000 COP each for the dubious pleasure.

The main bus terminal in Popayan is only a 5 minute 4,000 COP taxi (there are no Ubers in Popayan) to the main square and nearby accommodation.

Next stop: how to get from Popayan to San Agustín

How to get from Popayan to San Agustin

If you are looking for other things to do outside of Popayan or are considering your next destination, San Agustin is a good option and is not visited by many tourists (least when we were there).

In San Agustin, you can explore various archaeological sites, such as the interesting pre-Columbian statues, burial sites and various other artifacts from indigenous communities dating back to 6,000 years ago. Alternatively you can see the beautiful surrounding countryside on multi-day horse riding trips. Explore the Magdalena River, with its various canyons and waterfalls (including the 2nd tallest waterfall in Colombia) and trek to its source, the Laguna del Magdalena. In San Agustin you can try downhill mountain biking and rafting for the more adventurous of you out there. Or you can just chill the F out (like we did) in a glorious setting.

Fabulous hostel in San Agustín

casa de nelly

Check out Casa De Nelly for a relaxing stay with a beautiful garden, a great view of San Agustin and lots of cosy hangout spaces. We extended our stay from 2-7 nights and struggled to leave!

Journey between Popayan and San Agustín

It is a 5 hour minibus journey from Popayan on quite a bumpy road. We heard some horror stories about the journey before we took it, but it wasn’t too bad. Just a bit bumpy!

Again there are multiple companies with regular departures from the main terminal in Popayan. We arrived at 8.40am at the terminal and jumped on a 9am departure, paying 35,000 COP each. A bit steep considering the state of the collectivo!

15 Best Things to Do in Popayán (Colombia)

While many tourists overlook Popayán, this peaceful, charming city is filled with well-preserved colonial architecture and history to explore. The narrow cobblestone streets are a pleasure to walk around, the central plaza is lovely, and the range of gastronomy is pretty incredible for a town of its size.

The historic whitewashed buildings of the center give it the nickname “The White City,” and it’s also the religious capital of Colombia , coming alive during Semana Santa with processions in the streets. There are viewpoints on the edge of town, a nearby indigenous market, and several quality museums you can visit. Popayán also sits within reach of a natural park where you can climb a volcano, soak in hot springs, and spot the Andean condor.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Popayán :

1. Parque Caldas

Parque Caldas, Popayan

This leafy main square sits right next to the town’s cathedral and the clock tower in the historic center of Popayán.

Stroll around and you’ll find locals relaxing alongside shoe-shining men and street food vendors selling snacks and cold drinks.

The park dates back to 1537, so it’s filled with colonial history, as well as monuments, flowers, trees, and pigeons.

Grab a cup of fruit covered in sweetened condensed milk or a coffee from the nearby Juan Valdez and take a seat to watch the occasional street performer.

Sometimes you’ll find tents along the outer edge of the square with locals selling crafts, souvenirs, and accessories too.

2. Puente Del Humilladero

Puente Del Humilladero

The iconic arched bridge of Popayán was built in 1873 from a mix of cement which included the ox blood and other superstitious components.

The belief was that the blood of a strong animal would keep the bridge strong.

Before its construction, the locals struggled to climb the steep road from the poorer neighborhoods to the main square with their heavy loads.

After walking across this important piece of architecture, check out the gardens next to it – La Arcada De La Herrería.

It’s a nice place to stroll, picnic, and catch the occasional cultural event.

3. Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción and Torre del Reloj

Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción

While you spend some time in the adjacent Parque Caldas, you may as well have a wander into the cathedral and take a look at the clocktower.

The original adobe church constructed here was destroyed by an earthquake in 1566 and hit by yet another in 1983. The French-inspired interior of this stark white church is rather simple with its domed ceilings and airy, light feel.

The Torre del Reloj, or clock tower, next door was built in the late 1600s.

It has a one-handed clock that doesn’t always seem to work.

4. Visit the Silvia Indigenous Market

Silvia Indigenous Market

A small town about an hour and a half bus ride away, Silvia holds a fabulous indigenous market every Tuesday where you can buy traditional foods and watch the locals trade.

Not too touristy and still very authentic, the Guambiano community brings produce, textiles, and farm supplies into town for sale (rather than your typical souvenirs and trinkets). You’ll see them in the traditional Andean dress of black hats and bright blue shawls hauling fruits and vegetables around the market.

There’s also meat for sale and stalls selling quick meals like hot chocolate, cheese, and fried dough for breakfast.

5. Hike to the Viewpoints Around Town

View from Morro de Tulcán

For panoramic views of Popayán and the surrounding valleys, hike up the trail to Cerro de las Tres Cruces or the Hill of the Three Crosses.

Along the way you can try some typical regional snacks like empanadas and sugarcane juice.

You can also climb the nearby Morro de Tulcán, the former site of an ancient pyramid and now home to a statue of Sebastián de Belalcázar, the city’s founder.

Don’t miss the striking sunsets here – there’s plenty of police presence to keep it safe at night – because it’s a must-do activity while in Popayán!

6. Explore the City’s Gastronomic Offerings

Popoyan Gastronomy

In 2005, Popayán was designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, so you should check out its culinary offerings which have roots in the indigenous, African, and Spanish cultures.

Search for authentic, local meals at the Mercado Bolívar where you can grab a plastic chair, take a look at the offerings, and try some tamales or caldo with seafood and rice.

Mora Castilla is a restaurant in town serving the traditional cuisine – order the empanadas de Pipián, which are filled with a mix of potatoes and meat.

There’s also an array of great coffee shops where young locals socialize and tons of international restaurants from French to Italian to Mexican.

7. Museo Arquidiocesano de Arte Religioso

Museo Arquidiocesano de Arte Religioso

If you’re into religious art (or even if you’re not), this museum has an impressive collection of works displayed in a lovely 18th-century colonial residence.

Take a tour or browse by yourself to view its paintings, sculptures, furniture, and especially all the gold and silver treasures.

The entrance fee is around $2 USD and it’s a great place to wander the halls filled with artwork, jewelry, and religious relics from as far back as the 16th century.

If you’re here around Easter, this is a must-visit because they take the highly sacred pieces out of the vaults to put on display.

8. Museo de Historia Natural

Museo de Historia Natural, Popayan

One of the best museums in Popayán, the most unique thing about this place is its ridiculously large collection of taxidermy.

We’re talking three floors of stuffed critters, which include mammals, reptiles, insects, and a huge collection of birds! You can learn about endangered species like the Andean condor and view the region’s most important rocks and minerals.

There’s also a section filled with archeological finds like fossils and pottery, as well as information about the history of the area, including sites like the Morro de Tulcán pyramid.

It’s run by the Universidad del Cauca, and while the collection is great, entry is still cheap.

9. Yambitará Hacienda

Yambitará Hacienda

For a look back in time, visit this old colonial hacienda on the edge of Popayán.

A lush oasis surrounded by gardens, ancient trees, and native flora and fauna, guests can stay in this old home which dates back hundreds of years.

The casona and finca used to be located outside the city, but the town’s growth has nearly reached the property nowadays.

Still it remains a quiet, tranquil place to spend the night or just explore the grounds – the hosts are lovely! Make the 30-minute walk to the gorgeous waterfall after you wander the well-maintained interior with its charming decor that takes you back to the town’s golden age.

10. Parque Natural De Puracé

Parque Natural De Puracé

For a chance to spot the famous Andean condor and climb a volcano, head out to the Indigenous Reserve of Puracé.

With the help of a guide, you can visit a condor feeding site to hopefully catch a glimpse of one of these great birds of prey.

Only about 600 of them are left in the wild and three of them live in this park.

If the weather holds up and you plan ahead, you can climb the still-considered-active Volcan Puracé.

With the help of an indigenous guide, a few hours to spare, warm clothes, and waterproof gear, you can make it to the crater summit which lies at just over 15,000 feet (4,646 meters).

11. Coconuco Thermal Pools

Hot Springs

For a relaxing soak in natural hot springs, head out to the village of Coconuco about an hour outside of Popayán where, for a small fee, you can spend the day and take a dip.

It’s not fancy, but you can bathe together with friendly Colombians in these hot sulphuric pools – you might notice the eggy smell! Aguas Tibias is surrounded by beautiful nature, plus there’s a waterslide and mud spring.

Agua Hirviendo is a little hotter but more basic, with a waterslide and many locals who come out on weekends.

There are restaurants around and on a weekday you might even have the place to yourself! Head to the springs by public bus (plus a jeep or moto-taxi ride), join a bike tour that visits, or sign up to go with a hostel group.

12. Pueblito Patojo

Pueblito Patojo

A fun model of the town of Popayán with all of the important and historic buildings in miniature, this is a nice area for a stroll and a few photographs.

You can sample some of the typical local foods from vendors here – try the empanadas de Pipián and tamales – or purchase handicrafts from the artisans who set up nearby.

It’s also the site of the tourist office and a coffee shop where you can hang out.

Pueblito Patojo is the perfect place to stop off on your way to the Morro de Tulcán for sunset.

13. Free Walking Tour

Walk around Popayan

If you’re only here for a little while and want to learn all about the history of Popayán and its most important sites, be sure to check out the free walking tour with Get Up and Go Colombia .

They meet every day near the Parque Caldas and take groups around to places like the Puente Del Humilladero and the historic White City.

Their enthusiastic guides will give you insider information about the town, tell you stories, and take you to try local food.

On Sundays, they also include a hike up to a viewpoint surrounding the city.

It’s a great way to meet other travelers and if you do the evening tour, it might just include an awesome sunset.

14. See the Churches

Iglesia de San Francisco

Since Popayán is one of the religious capitals of Colombia, have a peek at the most famous churches in town.

After you’ve seen the cathedral on the main square, check out the Iglesia de San Francisco, the town’s most beautiful and largest colonial church.

It has eight altars, but most importantly, it’s home to two mummies which you can see when tour guides are available.

There’s also the smaller Iglesia La Ermita which is the oldest in town, Iglesia de Santo Domingo with its bell tower and a bustling school nearby, Iglesia de San Jose which isn’t painted white (shocker!), and the Iglesia de Belen that sits on a nice overlook of the city

15. Holy Week Processions

Semana Santa, Popayan

While this attraction is only doable if you’re here during Semana Santa, it’s one of the things that Popayán is most famous for.

These moving religious processions have been held in the city every year since the 16th century! Local schools create artwork and wooden carvings to be carried around the city for two kilometers in a path the shape of a cross.

Faithful crowds flock to see the models depicting the story of Christ and the crucifixion.

On the Tuesday through Saturday of Easter Week, everyone stands in the street with candles as the processions start in the evenings.

If you want to be here for this spectacle, be sure to book your accommodation early.

Popayán, Colombia’s White City

Popayán, Colombia’s White City

Popayán is known by two names: the white city ( la ciudad blanca ) and the fertile city ( la ciudad fecund ). It’s known as the white city because the old town is whitewashed and the fertile city because no other town has contributed as many Colombian presidents.

This traditional city is shaken up by a large student population and makes for an interesting stop for anyone travelling from Cali to Quito. When we visited in December 2019, Popayán had been very active and vocal in the Colombian protests for indigenous rights, the protection of the Colombian people and against austerity measures of Duque’s government.

The city’s usually pristine white walls had been covered in graffiti calling on the government to take action, and during our stay the local army had been tasked with re-painting the city.

Things To Do in Popayán

Take a free walking tour of popayán.

Get Up and Go Colombia is a non-profit organisation that arranges free walking tours in Popayán. It’s a great way to see the city and support a local person (with a generous tip!) Most of the spots mentioned in our Popayán travel guide are best seen with a local guide who’ll tell you a little bit more about the place’s history. On the tour, you can also access a couple of colonial houses and university buildings that would be difficult for solo tourists to visit.

home travel popayan

Visit a Colonial Church

Popayán has five churches on “Calle de las Iglesia” alone, but the Igelsia de Belen might be our favourite. It’s a twenty-minute uphill walk from the city centre, but it’s worth it to see this 17th-century church is set upon a scenic hilltop. The churches are built in close proximity because each one was built on an indigenous holy place.

Sit and Enjoy Local Life in Parque Caldas

Parque Caldas is the main hub of local life in Popayán. Children feed pigeons, grandfathers stand outside the cathedral for a gossip and vendors tout carts of freshly fried potato crisps and sliced mango. At Christmas time, the square is lit up with gaudy festive and floral decorations.

home travel popayan

Climb the Pirámide El Morro

This spot overlooking Popayán looks like a simple hill topped with a typical statue but, as the name suggests, the pyramid was built by indigenous people as a burial place for high society. It was discovered by the Spanish in 1535 and was abandoned when they found it. It’s a short-but-steep hike and you’re rewarded with decent views of the white city.

Take a Free Salsa Class in Popayán

Salsa is everywhere in Colombia, so you shouldn’t leave the country without trying a few steps for yourself. Be warned though “class” is used in the loosest sense of the word! We had a group of about 10 people dancing in a small hostel space with a teacher showing off ludicrously complicated moves. It’s all good fun though and arranged by Get Up & Go Colombia. Contact them on Facebook to find out when and where the next class will be.

We’re also told that the locals dance salsa at La Iguana from about 10PM on a Friday, should you want to see some salsa in the wild.

Cross the Old Bridge (Puente del Humilladero)

This picturesque bridge is an easy walk from the main square. The bridge crosses a stream and a small but peaceful grassy area. On weekends, hopeful locals set up stall to try and sell knickknacks to passersby.

Hike to the Three Crosses Hill

If you’d like to stretch your legs and you’ve already climbed El Morro, you could consider climbing the Three Crosses Hill. I say you might rather than should because it’s a muddy path and the views aren’t fantastic from the top. Muggings sometimes happen here as well, so don’t travel alone at night and don’t bring anything you can’t live without. It might take you an hour and a half to go up the hill and back down.

See the Pueblito

This might go down as something not to do in Popayán… It’s a cute collection of kiosks, but not much more than that. It is right next to the Pirámide El Morro though, so it won’t take up too much of your time and it’s worth a look in.

Places to Eat in Popayán

Mora Castilla — A traditional eatery where you can try the local speciality: deep-fried empanadas (of course) filled with potatoes and served with a peanut sauce. These Empanadas de Pipián are well worth trying and are inexpensive. So worth trying, in fact, that they’ve been mentioned by UNESCO as a contribution to gastronomy! You can also try tamales as well as locally-grown coffee.

Restaurante Carmina — This vegetarian-friendly restaurant serves set lunches at very reasonable prices. We had a starter, a main, a juice, a tea and a desert for $14,000 COP. We had the vegetarian main, which was a plate of rice with salad, courgettes and white beans. We didn’t try to chicken soup, but it did smell really good. (Note the opening hours on Google aren’t correct).

Restaurante Italiano Y Pizzeria — This Italian restaurant is a decent place to eat spaghetti, garlic bread and other Italian options. It’s fairly old-school, but it’s worth knowing about as it’s one of the few places that stays open on a Sunday evening in Popayán. Prices here are a little more expensive than other restaurants, but nothing excessive.

Best Cafes in Popayán

Café la Colombiana — Trendy java joint just off the main square with excellent brews and friendly staff. Their ceramic mugs are also gorgeous. Snack-sized vegetarian pastries filled with cheese, tomato and oregano are available. This was our favourite cafe in Popayán.

La Quinquina Café — This little, unassuming cafe is decorated in colourful murals and is a good place to try traditional snacks in Popayán. The staff at La Quinquina Café make each batch of empanadas de pipián to order, which means they’re freshly fried and extra crispy. Don’t forget to ask for some hot sauce (salsa picante) as they also make this up fresh!

Casa del Té — This tea house has over twenty different types of tea on the menu. We had the green tea with jasmine, which was brewed for exactly three minutes at 85 degrees. They also do light snacks such as sandwiches (vegan options available) and fruit bowls, but we wouldn’t recommend the food here.

Cafe Caracol — This cute cafe, which doubles as a hostel, is a delicious place to relax with a strong espresso and a slice of quiche. The owners are friendly and run mountain bike tours off of the premises.

Coworking in Popayán

La Franja Violeta Coworking — La Franja Violeta is a roomy coworking space with reasonable prices and welcoming staff. An hour costs COP $6,000 and includes a coffee, a half-day pass for 4 hours is COP $12,000 and includes a coffee and a snack, and a full day is COP $24,000 and includes unlimited coffee and two snacks.

Where To Stay in Popayán

Coffee Break Hostel — The cheapest hostel in Popayán. We paid COP $44,000 (£10) for a double room. We stayed here for one night when we first arrived. The hostel is outdated but the rooms are spacious and the staff are friendly. It’s a quiet hostel so you can be sure of a good night’s sleep.

Surf Apartment Airbnb — Popayán isn’t anywhere near the ocean, but this surf-themed apartment is the best place to stay in Popayán. The self-contained apartment has a comfortable bed, high-quality sheets (they are so nice), reliable wifi and a kitchen with an oven (a rarity in Colombia!) It’s centrally located in a small and quiet neighbourhood just 3-minutes walk to the white-painted old town. If it’s your first booking on Airbnb, you can get $47 off here .

Popayan Colombia Best Airbnb in White City

How to Get To and From Popayan

Getting to Popayán from Cali — Direct bus from Cali cost $26,000 COP per person. Direct buses leave when full and run all day. In theory, it’s a three-hour drive, but as always in Colombia it could take longer. From Cali, you can connect to Bogota or Medellin .

Getting to Pasto from Popayán — The “direct” bus from Popayán to Pasto costs $35,000 per ticket and is advertised as taking five and a half hours (it took seven on our trip). Buses leave all day from the transport terminal. If you are travelling from Colombia to Ecuador overland, the only safe place to cross is at Rumichaca, which is close to Ipiales. Pasto, which is en route, isn’t a super interesting town, but it’s supposed to be a nicer place to break up the journey than Ipiales.

10 Things to See and Do in Popayán, Colombia

Popayan

The beautiful city of Popayán is one of Colombia’s most underrated and prettiest cities, located in the southern department of Cauca. It doesn’t see as many tourists as other Colombian cities, but this is changing as people wake up to Popayán’s wonderful combination of delightful colonial architecture, excellent gastronomy, and diverse day-trip options. So here are 10 great things to see and do in Popayán.

San francisco church.

Popayán’s largest colonial church is also the most beautiful in the city and sits in front of a lovely little square in the heart of the old city. After an earthquake in 1983, the church’s ossuary was cracked open, revealing six mummified bodies! There are only two left and access is restricted, but you can ask at the entrance if any tours are happening that day.

Popayan’s most beautiful church

Purace National Park

The largest National Park in the region is an easy day-trip from Popayán, and the snow-capped volcano which gives the park its name can even sometimes be seen from the city itself on a very clear morning. Hardcore hikers can climb Purace Volcano , while those who simply fancy a hike can take a bus into the park and hike through it on the unpaved road, enjoying stunning views of hot springs, waterfalls, misty moorland, and even Andean Condors.

Puracé, Popayan

El Morro de Tulcán

This large hill overlooking the city is supposedly the remains of an ancient pre-Columbian pyramid structure, and today is home to the large statue of the founder of the city. It’s a short, breathless climb to the top, but the stunning panoramas and unrivalled sunset views make it a must-visit spot in downtown Popayán.

Puente del Humilladero

This 240m (787ft)-long brick bridge marks the former entrance to Popayán and was constructed in the middle of the 19th-century. It is today one of the city’s most important and iconic landmarks and lies a short walk from the main square at the heart of the old city. Alongside the large bridge is a smaller one – Puente de la Custodia – which was constructed back in 1713.

Market day in Silvia

About an hour from Popayán is the pretty little mountain town of Silvia, famous for its weekly Indigenous market. Every Tuesday, the local Guambiano Indigenous people arrive in the little town from surrounding mountain villages and reservations in order to buy and sell goods. Once you’re done browsing the market stalls you can take a jeep into the surrounding mountains to visit local villages, or enjoy a fresh trout lunch at one of the many farms surrounding Silvia.

La Ermita Church

The oldest church in the city, dating back to 1546, La Ermita is a simple little church located between El Morro and the city center. It might not look like the most beautiful church in the city, but La Ermita offers lovely views over the red-tiled roofs of Popayán and is home to some delightful old religious frescoes and wood carvings.

This tiny little corner store a few blocks from the main square styles itself as a ‘soda fountain’ and is one of the oldest and most well-known eateries in the entire city (no small thing, considering that Popayán is a UNESCO-recognised city of gastronomy ). It might not look like much at first glance, but La Fresa’s empanaditas de pipian – small potato-filled empanadas – with spicy peanut sauce are about the tastiest thing you’ll eat in the city (perhaps in Colombia!). Order five and prepare to order five more straight away!

Easter in Popayán

Popayán’s Easter celebrations are the stuff of legend throughout Colombia, and if you happen to be travelling in the country over the Easter period then you could do a lot worse than making sure you’re in the White City during Easter. The nighttime processions on Good Friday and Maundy Thursday are especially beautiful and dramatic, and there’s also an excellent festival of religious music to enjoy, so make sure to book your room a few months in advance!

The Natural History Museum

Billed as the best Natural History Museum in Colombia – although there admittedly isn’t much competition – the Popayán Natural History Museum has an especially notable collection of stuffed birds, collected from throughout the country. It’s located on the grounds of the city’s most important university and is definitely worth a few hours of your time.

Coconuco Thermal Baths

The thermal springs of Coconuco are one of the best of their kind in Colombia and are easily visited on a day-trip from Popayán. With two different pools – Agua Hirviendo and Agua Tibia – ranging from almost boiling hot to lukewarm, the pools may not be the prettiest there are, but their natural waters are really rejuvenating, and a great trip if you’ve been hiking in Purace the day before.

Have you ever heard about the white city of Colombia? Popayan is called the white city of Colombia, because of its pretty white buildings. It is said to be one of the best preserved colonial cities in America. However, opinions and feelings about Popayan are mixed. But even if you use Popayan only as a starting point for the Puracé national park and the local market in Silvia, it is a nice city where you can spend some great time. In this travel guide you will find the best things to do in Popayan, including tips for tours, restaurants, hotels and the best way to visit the Ciudad Blanca in Colombia.

Immerse yourself in the history of the city – Visit the museums

Easter in popayan, best tours and things to do in popayan, introducti on.

Popayan is the capital of the Caucas Department, located in southern Colombia. If you travel overland from Ecuador, or San Agustín in Colombia, to Cali and the coffee region, you will definitely pass it. I visited Popayan several times and really started to appreciate being there. Discover my tips for things to do in the white city in my Popayan Colombia travel guide.

Popayan is called the white city of Colombia, because of the white center and its colonial buildings.

More about Popayan

Popayán was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish Sebastián de Belalcázar, at the foot of the Morro del Tulcán. A hill that the indigenous people used to worship their gods. Due to the discovery of gold and silver at the end of the 17th century and the favorable location along the trade route between Peru, Ecuador and the Caribbean coast, the city quickly became attractive to wealthy families and monastic orders. They had countless palaces and churches built there. Something that can still be seen in the street scene today.

Popayan is called the white city of Colombia, because of the white center and its colonial buildings.

Popayan was hit by earthquakes several times, with the 1983 earthquake causing extreme damage. The city and monuments were rebuilt with the help of international agencies. And there is still a lot of attention for maintenance and restoration. Even students are occasionally called in to paint the buildings. Popayan is an important student city with numerous universities. In addition, the city attracts countless visitors every year, because of the special procession at Easter and the city’s patron saint, Santo Ecce Homo.

What to do and see in Popayan Colombia

Of course you can stroll through the white city of Colombia and take beautiful pictures. But there is more to do and see in Popayan. Discover my tips for the best things to do in Popayan and the surrounding area.

Visit Parque Caldas

Parque Caldas is the central square and meeting place for the local population. Families, students, street vendors and musicians gather here daily. Around the square you will find the large cathedral with the Torre de Reloj (the bell tower), the town hall and a number of government buildings. All painted in white. It is a nice square to take a seat on one of the benches and observe the local life.

In this travel guide you will find the best things to do in Popayan, including tips for tours, restaurants, hotels and the best way to visit the Ciudad Blanca in Colombia.

Walk to the viewpoint Morro de Tulcán – best things to do in Popayan

From the Morro de Tulcán you have a great view of Popayan. Here you also realize that Popayan is quite a big city. You can walk up the hill from the Parque Caldas within 15 minutes. Along the way you will meet many families having a picnic and people working out. At the foot of the mountain, you will find a small market and theater where there is often live music on the weekends.

Viewpoint Morro de Tulcán, one of the best things to do in Popayan Colombia.

It is interesting to know that el Morro del Tulcán was the place where the Spaniards were confronted with the indigenous people here in the region. It would have been a sacred pyramid where the local people worshiped their gods. The Spaniards therefore founded their new city right here: Popayán. A statue of the founder can be seen at the top of the hill and in some places you can walk past murals of indigenous people.

Tip: It is recommended to always check the latest safety situation before your walk up the mountain. Especially in the evening, because of robberies that sometimes take place.

Get inspired by modern art – cultural things to do in Popayan

Are you interested in art? Then one of the things to do in Popayan is to visit MIAMP and Casa Museo Negret. Édgar Negret was a Colombian artist, known for his architectural art and use of materials such as iron, steel and aluminum. His art can be found in different cities around Colombia. In his former home in Popayán you will find some of his important works and a few rooms of modern art from his private collection, including an original Picasso. It is not an highlight but for sure interesting to have a look.

One of the things to do in Popayan in Colombia if you are interested in art is to visit MIAMP and Casa Museo Negret.

Curious to discover more art from Colombia? In my following article you will find an overview of important artists from Colombia.

Discover the churches of Popayan

Popayan is known for its many churches. The most notable are La Ermita and Iglesia de Belén, as they are built one above the other on the mountain. In the evening they are also beautifully lit. La Ermita was built in 1546 and is therefore the oldest church in Popayán. Iglesia de Belén is extra special because of the annual processions that take place here to venerate the statue of Christ Santo Ecce Home. Both churches were completely destroyed by the earthquake in the 20th century and then rebuilt.

Other beautiful churches include the San Francisco church, because of its architecture, the Iglesia de Carmen, the former Carmelite convent and Iglesia de Santo Domingo.

Walk across the Puente del Humilladero

A bridge that is characteristic of Popayan is the 240 meter long Puente del Humilladero, the former gateway to the center of the city. It is nice to take a walk along the Río Molino, a tributary of the Río Cauca. On a nice day, many people gather here under the bridge and there is often live music on weekends.

Go for souvenir shopping

Looking for some nice souvenirs? In the street below the bridge there are a few small shops, where handmade souvenirs from the indigenous people are sold.

Look for beautiful buildings

There are a few interesting buildings, including the Pantéon de los Próceres and the Teatro Guillermo Valencia at Carrera 7. Both were built in neoclassical style and are worth taking a picture of. The theater regularly hosts concerts by Colombian artists.

Personally, I always like to delve into historical figures of a country. I is a great way to learn more about a city and culture.

Guillermo Leon Valencia Museum

In Popayán you can visit the Museo de Guillermo Leon Valencia, a writer, poet and politician who was president of Colombia from 1962 to 1966. He was born in Popayán and lived for many years in the 18th century city palace of Popayán. The collection includes paintings and 18th century objects and there is a nice view of the Puente del Humallidero. Admission is free, so it is worth having a look.

Casa Museo Mosquera

Another museum that you can visit is of the one of General Tómas Cipriano de Mosquera, who was president of Colombia four times between 1845 and 1867. It is a beautiful building from the 18th century with a lot of information about his life and the role he played in Colombia . There are more than 700 objects, but the most special is the urn with the heart of Mosquera in it.

Museum of Historia Natural

The natural history museum, located in the University of Cauca, has a large collection of stuffed animals, minerals, stones and archaeological objects. I have never been there myself, as I am not very fond of stuffed animals and birds. But according to many it is a beautiful museum and one of the things to do in Popayan where you learn a lot about nature and the country. One day I will definitely have a look.

Things to do in Popayan and surroundings in Colombia

Local market silvia.

Are you around Popayan on a Tuesday? Then you really want to visit the market of Silvia, one of the best things to do in Popayan Colombia. Every week locals, including the Guambiano indigenous people from the surrounding villages, gather here to sell their fruit, vegetables, meat and other goods. It is so colorful and wonderful to walk around. Moreover, you will find beautiful traditional jewelry at the market, something I always look for myself. The church is also worth a visit.

Visiting the local market in Silvia is one of the best things to do in the surroundings of Popayan in Colombia.

Puracé national park

Puracé is a national park, southeast of the city of Popayan, consisting of 86,000 hectares. It is dominated by the 4600 meters high and active Puracé volcano, which is visible on clear days.  It is a breathtaking area that reminds many people of Iceland. In this park you can go for walks, float in hot springs, view waterfalls and when you are lucky even see condors. Make sure to bring solid hiking shoes (it can be slippery) and be prepared for different climatic conditions. The weather changes quickly.

Puracé national park

It is best to visit Puracé national park with a day tour from Popayan. If you travel by bus from  San Agustín  to Popayan, you will cross part of the national park. However, this is not the most spectacular part.

Interested in visiting Puracé national park? It is important to book your tour in advance, as the park regularly works with a maximum amount of visitors. You will find prices and availability here .

The underground temples of Tierradentro

Tierradentro is a 3-hour drive from Popayan. Here you can visit underground tombs. The tombs date from 600 and 900 AD and are said to belong to priests and important chiefs. The location on a mountain slope and painted decorations make it one of the best things to do in and around Popayan Colombia, if you are interested in archaeology.

How to reach Popayan in Colombia

You can fly from Bogota directly to Popayan with Avianca. But you often reach Popayan during a trip of Colombia by land. From Cali, located north of Popayan, it is about a 3-hour drive with a transfer.

Páramo in Colombia with frailejones.

It is also easy to continue your journey in Colombia from Ecuador by land via the city of Pasto. The road from San Agustín to Popayan is quite an adventure. It is only 135 kilometers, but because the road runs through the national park Puracé and is in very bad condition, it takes a very long time (6 to 7 hours). The route across the Páramo, a plain consisting of moss, peat, grass and shrubs, which lies between the tree line and snow line, is very beautiful. You will also encounter one of my favorite plants here, the frailejones. San Agustín is one of the archaeological highlights of Colombia. From here you can continue your journey to the fascinating Tatacoa desert .

Table of Contents

Best time to travel to Popayán.

We believe that the best time to travel to Popayán, Colombia is during the months of December and January. This is because these months are the driest and most pleasant, with less rainfall and cooler temperatures. During this time, visitors can enjoy the city’s cultural festivities with ease, including the popular Feria de la Música festival and the celebration of the Virgin of Carmen.

However, it’s important to note that while December and January may be optimal for some, it might not be the best time for those who are on a tighter budget. During these months, the city tends to be more crowded, which can drive up the prices of accommodation and other services. Alternatively, if you’re looking to save some money, traveling during the rainy season (April-June, October-November) can offer more affordable prices.

Overall, Popayán is a charming destination with something to offer visitors all year round. However, if perfect weather and cultural events are a priority, we highly recommend planning your trip for December and January. With clear skies and pleasant temperatures, this time of year will undoubtedly enhance your experience in the “white city” of Colombia.

Is Popayán safe?

As a seasoned traveler, we have encountered numerous destinations that have been deemed ‘unsafe’ by others. However, we firmly believe that these labels are often unjustified and serve only to fuel stereotypes and misconceptions. When it comes to Popayán, we can confidently say that it is one of the most fascinating and enriching cities we have ever visited.

Yes, Popayán has its fair share of challenges, as do all cities. But we cannot deny the fact that we felt a strong sense of security during our time there. The city is home to some of the warmest and friendliest people we have ever encountered. We were warmly welcomed by locals who went out of their way to ensure we felt safe and comfortable during our stay.

Ultimately, we are firm believers that a destination is only as safe as the traveler makes it. As with any location, it’s important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and respect local customs. But we can confidently say that Popayán is a city worth visiting and experiencing for yourself.

How to travel to Popayán

As seasoned travelers, we know that getting to a destination can either make or break the travel experience. When it comes to traveling to Popayán in Colombia, there are a few options that could influence the overall experience. For us, the best way to travel to Popayán is by air.

Flying to Popayán is a great option for several reasons. Firstly, you’ll get to enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the city and the surrounding mountains before landing. Secondly, it’s the fastest and most hassle-free way to get there. You won’t have to endure long hours of bus rides and can avoid potential risks and discomforts that come with overland travel. Furthermore, it’s a cheap and reasonably priced option, especially if you book early.

If you’re a lover of overland travel and want to experience the journey to Popayán, you can consider taking a bus or renting a car. However, be prepared for long hours of bumpy rides due to poor road conditions. Additionally, traveling overland can be risky, especially when driving in unfamiliar territory with limited knowledge about safety measures. However, if you prefer a more tranquil environment, we recommend staying in the north of Popayán, occupying the upscale La Campiña neighborhood. It is known for its leafy-green avenues, sprawling parks, and affluent residential buildings. Here, you can rest and get away from the city’s noise, and yet still have easy access to major transportation routes and shopping districts. Ultimately, our advice is to choose the area that suits your taste and lifestyle, and we promise that you’ll find something captivating in every corner of Popayán.

How to get around in Popayán

We all love the idea of a leisurely stroll through a new city, but when it comes to Popayán in Colombia, you might want to put your walking shoes away. This metropolis with its steep inclines and hot and humid climate can be quite challenging for even the most seasoned hikers. So, what’s the best way to get around?

So if you’re planning a visit to Popayán, make sure to add this activity to your itinerary, and we promise you won’t regret it.

Visit the Caldas Park

As intrepid travelers, we are always searching for hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations. And if you find yourself in Popayán, Colombia, one place you absolutely cannot miss is the Caldas Park. This charming public space is a microcosm of the city’s culture, beauty, and unique atmosphere.

First of all, the Caldas Park is a perfect starting point for explorations of Popayán’s historic downtown. Surrounded by colonial architecture and picturesque streets, the park is a natural gathering place for locals and tourists alike. You’ll see families relaxing on the benches, street musicians performing under the shade of the trees, and vendors selling delicious snacks and handicrafts.

Beyond its location and vibrant ambiance, the Caldas Park has a special significance in Popayán’s history. It’s named after Francisco Jose de Caldas, a prominent Colombian scientist and patriot who was executed by Spanish authorities during the country’s struggle for independence. By visiting this park, you’re paying homage not only to Popayán’s past, but to the whole nation’s heroic heritage. In short, if you want to understand the heart and soul of Popayán, the Caldas Park is an unmissable destination.

  • temas políticos delicados;
  • contenido promocional;
  • actividades ilegales;
  • información personal o sensible (por ejemplo, e-mails, números de teléfono o información de tarjetas de crédito);
  • lenguaje ofensivo, sexual, discriminatorio, amenazante, que incite al odio o de contenido violento;
  • spam y contenido falso;
  • elementos relacionados con la crueldad animal;
  • falsificaciones de identidad (por ejemplo, si el autor o autora dice ser otra persona);
