Queen Mary 2 Arrival in New York Delayed?

By Sidekick32 , June 28 in Cunard Line

Cool Cruiser

Embarking on the QM2 tomorrow for the Boston July 4th cruise. Just received email stating QM2's arrival into NYC June 29th is delayed four hours. Anyone currently onboard that could shed some light on the issue? Medical? Propulsion?

I just received the same email.

Here is the info:

The captain announced around 11:15 a.m. that because of the weather we are delayed getting into NY.   That we're really only about 1.5 hours late, but because of the tides, we can't access the harbor until 4 hours late.  We did hit some rough weather along the way, but it seemed like we went 24 knots or 23 knots most of the crossing

Average speed of 23-24 is REQUIRED for 6 days crossing...

We went about 21-22 kts for a little bit due to high winds, that put us behind schedule.

We *could* have gone 28 kts to make up time but If the "rumour" about one of the gas turbines being INOPERABLE is true, 25kts is pretty much our top speed with no room to spare.

After doing 7 days crossing for so long, the 6 days schedule is pushing the limits for Cunard and QM2.

The westbound crossing 2 weeks ago also suffered major delays.

Thank you Kordy,

Have you been enjoying the crossing thus far?

hi!  When I called CUNARD, six times today, I was receiving all different reasons as to why the ship is being delayed. Recently, I heard of a medical emergency.  I pray that there is no viral outbreak on this ship. The cruiseline has no right to not disclose the exact reason for such a delay.

If you read the very lively roll call thread for this cruise, which has 16 pages, you can be sure there is currently no viral outbreak on the ship. All is well.

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!! Sigh of relief!!!!  I am going to the terminal two hours before my scheduled time.  I need to eat my lunch on the ship! LOL

Please read the roll call thread for this cruise which has very detailed reports on how the current cruise is going and what is enjoyable and what isn't. In fact, Joe from Florida, went above & beyond.

But to answer your question - yes, it was very enjoyable, other than a bit of a storm on the 2nd day where the ship was rocking a little.

Glad you have had an enjoyable time on this crossing, but on other threads you talk about what you are looking forward to and what you will do on your up and coming crossing  and ask questions about various aspects of being on QM2 so you don’t give the impression you have actually sailed yet ?

Why would a viral outbreak cause delays?

I'm reading mixed messages too. I got the impression  Kordy is boarding today but as he/she is giving an account of this cruise as if he/she were on it, I can't tell if it's a b2b.

Cunard or any other cruise line have absolutely no obligation to explain why a ship is arriving later than scheduled, all that matters is that you depart on the scheduled day.

As mentioned in my response, I was referring to the thread with Joe doing a live report. I read every message in the 16 pages of reporting, and based on that answered the question that yes - it was an enjoyable cruise.

Sorry if it's confusing, but if you read my answer, I'm simply summarizing the 16 pages of report from Joe (and others).

There's no harm giving your views here, indeed the more the merrier, it's not the fastest moving forum going. My views would be very similar to yours, in terms of how things are going. However I would always be careful to distinguish between first hand experiences, which this board is very good at presenting, and those which are derived second hand. The latter can have value, particularly through the prism of experience, but it's always helpful, if not essential, to make this clear. Look at it from the perspective of someone new to Cunard, perhaps not familiar with the characters here, it's best for them to understand where you are coming from here.

I thought they had said to arrive two hours later.

Not obvious so thanks for clarifying. If you are boarding today, I hope you have a super time and will tell us a bit about your experiences. 🙂

Looks like the QM2 is now docking in NYC - so it's not too bad from an arrival point of view:

The QM2 has already docked and has fully arrived in NYC !

Best wishes to all for a smooth embarkation today. We would enjoy reading reports/reviews from an eastbound perspective. @Kordy  I see that you were active on the roll call for this crossing. Will you be posting about your experience?

Yes, I will be active and I would love to post more about my experience from June 29 for the Independence Day cruise, departing today June 29 from NYC, but I don't have a WIFI package, so it will be done when we're in the port in Canada and in Boston.

NOTE: that this is not the eastbound, the QM2 is doing a special Independence Day Cruise to Boston and Canada.

Enjoy your trip Kordy

Queen Mary 2 - Which Deck / Cabin for First Time Transatlantic Cruiser

By shetlandtim , January 29, 2023 in Cunard Line

We are planning to book a trip to New York on Queen Mary 2 in August.  We have never been on a cruise before and our only experience of boat travel is of ferries, neither of us is a particularly good sailor.  We think we should have a cabin as low down as possible and as near the centre as possible.  Which would be better cabin 5118 on deck 5 or cabin 6159 on deck 6

We sailed transatlantic on a very rough sailing out of New York in January. For context, it was so rough the departure from New York was delayed until the next morning and for much of the voyage the outside decks were closed. We had a deck 5 sheltered balcony and it was excellent and better than many other places on the ship.

We're also doing the round trip starting 11 August.

Having crossed the Atlantic on QM2 more than 10 times, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about in August.

Just pick the best cabin that the budget will allow.

And don't forget to join the Roll Call.

Going by your profile name; If you have any experience of the Lerwick-Aberdeen ferry you should not even be aware that Queen Mary 2 has left the berth.

201612041821400.STCLAIR1937.jpg

I have no memory of the sailing but was assured it was the worst my mother had ever encountered!

I don't have experience with inside rooms, and the port vs starboard transatlantic question is moot.

Both rooms are midships, between the 'B' and 'C' staircases, so should have minimal perceived motion.

Mrs Bear and I tend to book 'sheltered balcony' rooms, midships where possible - quite near these inside rooms..

Deck 5 is probably preferable as the deck above is cabins rather than public rooms.

I have also made the Aberdeen to Lerwick crossing, just one return journey, it was ok but not great.

Different boat to the one above though !

Many thanks for all the above responses., very helpful.

I have now booked cabin cabin 5118 on deck 5

I will probably have lots more questions as we are first timers.  We are doing this as we both have special birthdays ending in a 0 this year.  We have a long trip in Canada planned and we thought it would be a nice way to get there.

The sweet spot for least movement is actually 2/3rds of the way back. (Seen the ship’s designer say this in a YouTube video). In August I’d get yourself some sort of balcony. And one side will obviously be hot if you like the sun…)

Tip: go to purser's desk immediately and register for a PAID upgrade. Lots of pax ask for a free upgrade but those wishing to pay a few hundred dollars can get good upgrades as there are always many "no shows" for a variety of reasons.

I’ve seen someone say it’s a good idea to ring Cunard a couple of weeks before the cruise and see if there are any deals on upgrades?

First time, just go with the cheapest.  Cunard might even upgrade you, you never know.  In August you most likely won’t be aware the ship is moving.

The weird thing on a calm sunny day on October crossing sitting on the balcony I couldn't get it out of my head that the ship was stationary and the sea was moving past.  It was a little discombobulating (great word...)

Haha

We sailed NYC to Southampton on QM2 last August 5, in Inside cabin 5030, which is located more forward that you are. It was a wonderful trip, and we rarely felt any movement at all. We loved the ship, the staff, the ambience, the meals. I have a review of our sailing, you can probably find by clicking on my avatar and looking at my posts.

We enjoyed it so much, we came home and quickly booked another transatlantic sailing for late August 2023.

Wishing you very happy birthday celebrations, and a wonderful trip!

Hardly a guarantee - August is getting close to the peak of hurricane season.

Yes, but the alignment of the jet stream means that the remnants of them, after they have travelled across the southern US, are far less likely to affect the mid-Atlantic than in winter

I did a roundtrip crossing om QM2 in August and the sea was very smooth the entire sailing.  It was a wonderful sailing and I am doing a crossing in May from NYC.

Very many Atlantic hurricanes (perhaps as many as 50%) never touch North America  -- and there are no remnants of hurricanes in winter.

It's directly below the Kings Court buffet - which may in itself be a source of noise.

Look up and down on any deck plans when looking at cabins
