TSA’s Secure Flight Program: What It Means for You

Until very recently, the Expedia booking site knew me as “Ed Hewitt,” going back to the day I signed up for the service nearly 15 years ago. And Expedia knows a lot of my friends for whom I have booked travel over the years — Patty, Tom, Chris, Ben, Dan and a few others. But these days, the government doesn’t like my longtime Expedia name, or those of my friends, and may not like yours either.

The TSA’s new Secure Flight program is now requiring us to use our full legal names as they appear on our accepted form of identification — so now I shall be Edward C., and my friends shall henceforth be Patricia A., Thomas P., Christopher W., Benjamin H. and Daniel R., or we won’t be visiting each other — not by taking a flight at least.

One of the TSA’s main reasons for Secure Flight is that it will “greatly reduce the number of passengers misidentified as a match to the watch list.” Given that the no-fly lists are notoriously messy, the program makes some sense — if we are using government-issued ID to, well, identify ourselves, whether it be a passport or a driver’s license, it seems to follow that the document to which you are comparing the ID should match up, end stop.

But while it sounds simple, there are nuances to the Secure Flight program that you’ll want to be aware of before you book your next trip. Read on to learn how the program could affect you.

How Secure Flight Works Secure Flight launched in August, is currently in a phase-in stage, and is intended to be fully in place by November 2010 for all flights leaving from and/or arriving in the U.S. Essentially, the airlines and booking engines will collect your full name, gender and birth date when you book your flight and send that info to the TSA, which will then compare the information against the no-fly list. The name you give when you book must synch up with your full name as shown on the government-issued ID you use when checking in for your flight.

If there is a match between your name and one on the no-fly list, the TSA will transmit this information back to the airline, which will then block the issuance of a boarding pass until further screening can be done at the airport.

Folks who have had problems with the no-fly list in the past (typically people with identical or similar names to those on the list) can request and enter a “redress number,” issued by the TSA, when booking. If you check out okay, your boarding pass will be issued and you’ll go through airport security as usual.

Secure Flight is a behind-the-scenes pre-screening tool that compares the name of the traveler booking a reservation to the official no-fly list. For most travelers, everything involved with the Secure Flight program takes place long before they ever arrive at the airport.

Secure Flight does not replace the eyes-on screening that you undergo when you arrive at the security checkpoints. TSA agents will continue to compare boarding passes to your ID to ensure a match as well as to confirm that you have a valid form of ID.

What About Boarding Passes? Officially, the TSA says that “the name you provide when booking your travel is used to perform the watch list matching before a boarding pass is ever issued, so small differences between the passenger’s ID and the passenger name printed on the boarding pass, such as the use of a middle initial instead of a full middle name or no middle name/initial at all, or hyphens and apostrophes should not cause a problem for the passenger.”

Secure Flight and security checkpoint boarding pass reviews are not directly related. Sarah Horowitz of the TSA’s Office of Strategic Communications & Public Affairs notes that “at the security checkpoint, TSA strives to ensure you are who are you say you are. TSA performs travel document checking to see that you, your identification and your boarding pass match and are valid. While Secure Flight and travel document checking are both critical security functions, they serve different purposes at different points in the security process.”

So Secure Flight really has nothing to do with what appears on your boarding pass, although we can hope that conforming to Secure Flight booking requirements should make for greater consistency between boarding pass and ID names.

That said, this may or may not ease problems with boarding pass discrepancies at security checkpoints; as mentioned above, that is an entirely separate security function. The Secure Flight program ensures only that people who are not on the no-fly list will be issued boarding passes.

As with almost every new TSA initiative, a period of adjustment should be expected — we all remember shoes off, then shoes on, then shoes off; laptop bags allowed, then laptop bags not allowed — but hopefully the system will settle into place over time. (You’ve gotta feel for the airline and security folks at times; for example, the TSA’s graphic about Acceptable and Not Acceptable Documents includes pictures of a fishing license and a library card as examples of unacceptable documents. If you have spent any time in airports, it’s not hard to imagine folks trying to use these to board flights.)

Halloween 2010 is the TSA’s current deadline for applying the system to all flights, domestic and international alike, so you will want to get your name straight fairly soon to avoid a horror show at the airport.

What You Need to Do to Conform to Secure Flight Requirements On the face of it, there doesn’t seem to be a problem; I just make my next booking with my full name and I’m good, right? The biggest problem is that computers are dumb, and garbage in equals garbage out — and there are a LOT of computers out there with our names in them, not all of them correct. Enough possibilities exist for small data inconsistencies and problems that you will want to get well ahead of the curve with this program; some due diligence (and, let’s face it, hassle) may save you a lot of grief once the program is fully in place later this year. Here are some tips and considerations to help you anticipate a few of the challenges you may face:

1. It is your responsibility. It is incumbent on the individual traveler to comply with these changes; a mismatched booking may be the fault of your travel agent, spouse, friend or assistant, but it is your legal obligation to make sure your own travel records comply with the law.

2. Info gathering may vary considerably. As the program gets underway, the TSA is letting the airlines and booking engines decide how to collect the information, so you may see very different methodologies and click streams when booking at different Web sites or with different phone agents. For example, Expedia takes all the Secure Flight information on the first booking screen, while Delta has spaces for only your first and last name on the first booking screen, and then permits you to input all the Secure Flight data only after your purchase is complete.

The TSA has not mandated the pace of integration of Secure Flight. Notes Horowitz, “Passengers shouldn’t be concerned if particular airlines don’t ask them to provide the additional information right away; it should not impact their travel. Each airline will request this information as their capability to request it is integrated into their individual systems.”

3. Update ALL your accounts. Be sure that every airline, booking site, frequent flier program or travel agent that you use has your correct full name, birthday and gender listed.

4. Be aware of what appears on your ID. After reading up on Secure Flight, I took a look at my government ID’s. With my passport in one hand and my driver’s license in the other, I realized, oops! Looks like I already have a problem. My license says Edward C. Hewitt, but my passport says Edward Charles Hewitt. Do I need to book domestic travel (for which I would use my driver’s license) as Edward C., and international travel (for which I would use my passport) as Edward Charles? The answer (at present, at least): yes, that is exactly right.

The simplest thing to do might be to get your two favored ID’s (typically a driver’s license and passport) to read identically, but this may not be as easy as it sounds. After checking the licenses of a half-dozen friends, it looks to me like my state’s DMV strongly prefers a middle initial (due to space constraints, I suspect; a driver’s license is pretty small). And if I do want to change one government ID because another government agency requires something different, most likely I am going to have to pay for it, but that’s another story for another time. For the time being, it appears you may need to think ahead to which ID you will use for a particular trip and make your reservation using that legal name.

5. Dealing with suffixes, hyphenations and more. Since the program got underway in August 2009, some travelers have reported discrepancies with regard to suffixes and hyphenated names — Jr. vs. Junior vs II, for instance — and the booking sites that I reviewed for this article display varying ways of collecting this information. One had a long dropdown box with almost every imaginable name suffix; another just had a box into which you type the suffix as you like to use it.

Horowitz again: “TSA recognizes that name formats on government identification will vary depending on the issuer. Due to these variations, TSA has built some flexibility into the Secure Flight program. Passengers should strive to book travel reservations using the name that appears on their government-issued ID, but small differences such as a hyphen should not impact a passenger’s travel. Secure Flight can accept names with or without additional elements such as suffixes, titles or apostrophes. When making a reservation, passengers should follow the prompts provided by the airline reservation system. If the airline does not allow hyphens in a passenger name, a space should be used instead of the hyphen.”

6. Booking for others. If you are making reservations for your family or friends, you will need to make sure you use the exact name on each family member’s ID of choice. If your friend’s license says Mary Margaret and you know her and book her as Peggy, she is going to have a problem getting to Houston.

7. Using a travel agent. Similarly, if you use a travel agent, you will need to make sure he or she knows not only your full legal name, but more specifically your legal name as it appears on the form of ID you will be using on that specific trip . Again, it is incumbent on the traveler to make sure the travel agent gets this right; blaming it on your travel agent is not going to be well received by airport security. They may work with you, but can’t just let everyone who blames their agent pass without additional screening.

8. Name changes. If you make a name change for any reason, until your new ID’s have been issued, you will need to remember to book under the name that appears on your ID.

9. Difficult or unusual names. If you have a name that is difficult to spell or unfamiliar to Western ears, you’ll need the patience of Job and the diction of a schoolmarm to book a flight over the phone. I have a friend whose last name is Pfaendtner (pronounced more or less “Fentner”); that’s three vowels and six consonants, including four consonants in a row. Good luck getting the agent in a noisy US Airways call center to get that right every time. You will need to be insistent in this case, and you should check your itinerary immediately upon receipt when mailed or emailed to you.

10. Verifying your reservation. In fact, that last bit of advice goes for everyone. Be sure to confirm the name on your reservation well in advance of travel, and then check in for your flight as early as possible, preferably using the online check-in service on your airline’s Web site. Because any issues will arise at the time you request a boarding pass, by checking in online 24 hours before travel, you can avoid any check-in counter delays resulting from the new program — and if you are going to be denied a boarding pass for security reasons, you will find out enough in advance that you can do something about it.

11. Other info. Gender and date of birth must also match up — so you’d better make sure your travel agent knows your birthday.

12. Award travel. Traveling on award travel using your frequent flier account seems the most likely source of problems for many travelers; these programs tend to issue tickets in the name you used at sign-up for the program, not the name you might supply at the time of booking. Some frequent flier programs are taking proactive steps to contact members; others are not. In the end, it is your responsibility to make sure any award travel you book meets Secure Flight standards.

13. Redeeming unused travel. The new program also makes redeeming travel for unused flights potentially cumbersome. If you purchased the old flight before Secure Flight procedures were in place, you will need to make an official change to your reservation to be in compliance with the new standards.

14. Fixing problems. Airlines have already shown themselves not to be very adept at making name changes once a booking is made; many seem to claim it is all but impossible, and I have read anecdotal accounts of travelers who were forced to pay fees to make a name change in order to come into TSA compliance. The TSA has no official position on fees as they apply to Secure Flight; you need to check with your airline. If you encounter this problem, I would recommend emphasizing that the change is only due to complying with law, and perhaps send a note to the TSA if a fee is still applied.

15. Character count limits. To return to blaming the computers, some software systems have character count limits (a single initial for a middle name), or do not allow hyphenated names, or don’t have a field for “IV” or the like. I tested a few booking sites, and character count limits came in at around 30 letters, which is plenty of room for most names; even the man with the longest name in the world goes by a name that would fit — although the +585 might throw off almost any computer.

16. Traveling with kids. If you are traveling with children who do not yet have ID, check their birth certificates before you book, and bring them with you.

What is travel insurance?

What is travel protection.

  • Travel insurance vs. Travel protection

How to purchase

Travel protection conclusion and recommendations, travel insurance vs. travel protection faqs, travel insurance vs travel protection: understanding the differences.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate travel insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Travel protection covers trip cancellations, while travel insurance covers cancellations and medical costs.
  • Travel insurance is usually more expensive than travel protection, as it provides more coverage.
  • Travel insurance typically costs 4-8% of your total trip costs, more with CFAR protection.
  • Compare travel insurance coverage options and rates with SquareMouth .

In high school geometry class, you likely learned all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. The same can be said for the perceived connection between travel insurance and travel protection.

The two similar-sounding terms describe entirely different products if you're researching how to protect your trip. While all travel protection plans are considered travel insurance, not all travel insurance provides travel protection.

Suffice it to say the confusion surrounding this topic, even among savvy travelers, is all too common.

"Travel protection and travel insurance are sometimes used interchangeably, but these two products are quite different and work best when they complement one another," says Joe Cronin, president of International Citizens Insurance, who cuts to the root of the problem. Understanding the difference between the two products is essential to ensure you have the right coverage for your next trip

Coverage and Benefits

Travel insurance is a regulated product purchased by the consumer from a third party and underwritten by a reputable insurance company. Depending on the policy purchased, the best travel insurance policies can help cover losses associated with travel delays, lost luggage, medical expenses, or trip cancellations. In addition, many travel insurance plans have added specialty coverage from sports equipment to pets and roadside service.

You can buy travel insurance exclusively for trip cancellations, flights, or other individual service. Or you can expand your coverage by purchasing a cancel for any reason (CFAR) policy .

Limitations and exclusions

According to Generali Travel Insurance , most insurance companies enforce the following limitations and exclusions:

  • Reasonably foreseeable events (i.e., known storms, epidemics, acts of war)
  • Travel restrictions by government authorities
  • Pre-existing conditions (unless a waiver applies)
  • High-risk activities

Coverage Scope

Travel protection (also called trip protection) is an unregulated product purchased directly from the provider (from travel agencies and credit card issuers to airlines and cruise ship companies). This option offers limited trip cancellation coverage in the form of fees waived and credit issued in the case of changes to the itinerary and cancellation, respectively.

Buyers cannot make travel protection more comprehensive, which means limited, less customizable options. This could be sufficient if you're insuring a short-term, domestic trip. But more extensive trips require more extensive coverage, which travel insurance may be better suited for.

Typical Inclusions

Your coverage options vary by insurance provider, but most will offer trip cancellation and trip interruption. These coverages insurers nonrefundable, prepaid expenses, and additional expenses incurred due to a cancellation or interruption.

Comparing travel insurance and travel protection

Differences in coverage.

Cronin is critical of travel protection, saying it is not "a suitable policy in place of insurance, rather a good add-on if the price is right." He underscores while trip protection policies can be pretty generous, services remain unregulated and rife with exclusions.

Nicholas Imtias, an avid world traveler, learned this the hard way after opting for budget-friendly travel protection for a canceled overseas trip. Unfortunately, he could not utilize the waiver he received for a flight from Sri Lanka to the Maldives when the unregulated protection proved nothing but an empty promise.

Additionally, most non-insurance providers offer medical-related coverage. This could be crucial coverage if you're traveling abroad, especially if your health insurance isn't effective at your destination.

Cost Considerations

As such, when compared side-by-side, the cost of travel protection will invariably be less than the cost of travel insurance, making it an attractive option for many who still need to do their homework.

Trip protection may pop up when booking your flight, whether through a deal site like Expedia or the main airline website. In most cases, premiums are low, totaling as little as $25-$30 for a short flight. But, as mentioned before, it only covers the flight.

The cost of travel insurance , on the other hand, equates to a percentage of the trip's total cost. Typically, premiums equate to an average of 4-8% of trip costs. Of course, a good travel insurance plan can't protect you from the inconvenience and sheer expense of an emergency while traveling abroad (which, depending upon the specifics, could be thousands of dollars or more) or ahead of time. But it can help to make you whole after the fact.

This could mean giving you a claim settlement to cover toiletries and other necessities in the immediate aftermath of a lost bag. It could also mean reimbursing you for a portion of nonrefundable trip costs if you have to cancel your trip. For travelers researching "how to protect your trip," travel insurance covers what we forget about until we need it.

The exact costs for travel insurance vary based on the trip and the coverage you want. For example, if you want cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage, you should expect a hefty increase in your premiums. But for people canceling trips for excluded reasons with a regular travel insurance plan, CFAR coverage would be well worth it. The general rule is simple: the more protection you want, the more you'll have to pay.

Choosing the right option for your trip

Assessing your travel needs.

Many people have a simple question: How much should I spend on travel insurance? The answer is it depends. So, before making any decisions and signing on the dotted line, consider your travel needs and budget.

"Travel insurance is designed to protect you and your trip from unexpected costs and losses …[and] depending on the plan you choose, the coverage can be very comprehensive," Pamela Bardo, vice president of Customer Service & Delivery at FlightHub Group, says.

"Rather than providing broad coverage, travel protection typically protects the customer's purchase in case they need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness," Bardo explains. She emphasizes that travel protection does not typically cover indirect costs, such as the high costs of an emergency evacuation.

Travelers should look at the specifics of their travel plans and buy the appropriate plan. For example, suppose you're traveling from California to New York. In that case, you should get protection for your flight, and you might want to consider cancel for any reason coverage, depending on many factors. However, getting medical travel insurance wouldn't make sense when your regular health insurance travels with you.

On the other hand, if you're traveling to Thailand, you'll want to protect the most expensive part of your trip (flight). You'll also want to get a robust medical plan in case something goes wrong in a country where you do not have other health insurance.

Factors to consider

Before choosing between travel insurance and protection, consider the following factors:

  • Destination: If you're traveling internationally or to a high-risk area, consider purchasing a policy. Travel protection may be enough if you're taking a domestic trip to see family members.
  • Trip cost: A costlier and longer trip may require higher coverage limits, which travel insurance tends to provide. Travel protection often has limits over what and how much it'll cover.
  • Activities: High-risk activities (i.e., sports, outdoor activities, etc.) increase the risk of injury. Travel protections likely won't cover high-risk events, but travel insurance gives you the option to include a sports and adventures add-on.

Purchasing tips and best practices

You can buy travel insurance through an insurance provider, comparison site, broker, or travel agency. You can purchase protection through the service provider. For example, hotels, airlines, and large events may protect your purchase if you cancel. But you may find that not all services or events provide this benefit.

Opting into protection or buying insurance shortly after you make your first trip deposit ensures that all future cancellations are covered. If you choose not to purchase your policy immediately, you must do so within a certain amount of time to qualify for pre-existing condition coverage  — usually 14 days.

Reading and understanding policy terms

Travel insurance and protection features can overlap, but both come with several exclusions. It's important to know what coverages you require. It's also important to read through your insurance policy or travel protection's terms and conditions to determine which one is right for you.

Making an Informed Decision

Travel insurance and travel protection are valuable tools designed to help keep travelers safe and protected on their journeys. Both provide peace of mind while en route to destinations around the globe. But it's essential to consider factors unique to your itineraries, such as the length and cost of your trip, potential personal risks or concerns, and any existing insurance coverage. All these things allow travelers to make the right decision for their travel plans.

Whether travel protection is enough for international travel depends on your situation. Travel insurance is generally recommended for more extensive, international trips due to its comprehensive coverage. It includes medical emergencies which travel protection plans don't typically cover.

Yes, especially if the travel protection is free or more cost-effective than specific coverage from travel insurance policies. Before purchasing travel insurance, be sure you don't already have a travel protection benefit.

No, travel protection does not cover medical emergencies. Trip cancellation and interruption are more common benefits.

You should prioritize travel protection if you're taking a domestic trip, as your primary health insurance provider should adequately cover you when you're in the country, reducing your need for travel medical coverage.

Travel insurance policies cover pre-existing conditions if purchased within a certain timeframe. while travel protection plans typically don't cover medical emergencies and pre-existing conditions.

Introduction

Traveling is an exhilarating experience that allows us to explore new destinations, immerse ourselves in diverse cultures, and create unforgettable memories. Whether it's a leisurely vacation, a business trip, or a backpacking adventure, the anticipation of embarking on a journey can be incredibly exciting. However, amidst the thrill of travel, it's essential to consider the potential risks and unforeseen circumstances that may arise during your trip.

This is where travel insurance comes into play. It serves as a safety net, offering protection and peace of mind in the face of various travel-related contingencies. From flight cancellations and lost luggage to medical emergencies and unforeseen trip interruptions, travel insurance provides a financial cushion and support system to mitigate the impact of unexpected events.

While no one anticipates encountering mishaps during their travels, having the right travel insurance in place can make all the difference in navigating challenging situations. This article aims to delve into the purpose of travel insurance, the coverage it offers, the reasons why it's essential, the different types available, and how to select the most suitable policy for your specific travel needs. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of travel insurance, you can make informed decisions to safeguard your travel experiences and ensure a worry-free journey.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Travel insurance encompasses a wide range of coverage to address the diverse risks associated with travel. The specific coverage provided can vary based on the insurance provider and the type of policy chosen. However, some common components of travel insurance coverage include:

Trip Cancellation or Interruption: This feature reimburses you for non-refundable trip expenses if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to unforeseen events such as illness, injury, or death of a family member.

Medical Emergencies: Travel insurance often includes coverage for medical expenses incurred during your trip, encompassing treatment for illnesses, injuries, and emergency medical evacuations.

Baggage Loss or Delay: In the event of lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, travel insurance can provide reimbursement for essential items and clothing until your belongings are recovered.

Travel Delays: If your trip is delayed due to reasons beyond your control, such as severe weather or airline strikes, travel insurance can cover additional expenses for accommodation, meals, and alternative transportation.

Emergency Assistance Services: Many travel insurance policies offer 24/7 access to emergency assistance services, providing support in navigating unfamiliar medical systems, arranging medical transportation, and offering multilingual help in times of crisis.

These are just a few examples of the extensive coverage that travel insurance can provide. It’s important to review the policy details carefully to understand the full scope of coverage and any exclusions that may apply. By comprehensively addressing potential risks, travel insurance offers a safety net that allows you to embrace your travels with confidence and security.

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a vital companion for any traveler, offering invaluable protection and support throughout your journey. There are several compelling reasons why investing in travel insurance is a prudent decision:

Financial Protection: Unforeseen events such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost baggage can result in significant financial losses. Travel insurance provides a safety net, reimbursing you for covered expenses and minimizing the financial impact of unexpected disruptions.

Medical Coverage: Access to quality healthcare may be limited or expensive in certain destinations. Travel insurance ensures that you can seek medical treatment without bearing exorbitant costs, offering peace of mind and essential support in the event of illness or injury during your travels.

Risk Mitigation: Travel inherently carries a degree of risk, from flight delays and natural disasters to unforeseen personal emergencies. Travel insurance mitigates these risks, empowering you to navigate unexpected challenges with comprehensive assistance and financial protection.

Global Support: When traveling abroad, especially to unfamiliar locations, having access to emergency assistance services through your travel insurance can be invaluable. From medical evacuations to language barriers, these support services offer crucial aid in navigating unfamiliar territories.

Peace of Mind: The reassurance of knowing that you are protected by travel insurance allows you to fully immerse yourself in your travel experiences without undue worry. Whether you’re embarking on a leisurely vacation or a high-stakes business trip, travel insurance provides the peace of mind to savor every moment.

By recognizing the unpredictable nature of travel and the potential challenges that may arise, the need for travel insurance becomes evident. It serves as a reliable safety net, empowering you to embrace the adventure of travel while safeguarding against unforeseen circumstances that could otherwise disrupt your plans and finances.

Types of Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not a one-size-fits-all solution, as the diverse needs of travelers necessitate a range of specialized coverage options. Understanding the different types of travel insurance can help you select the most suitable policy for your specific travel circumstances. Here are some common types of travel insurance:

Single-Trip Insurance: This type of policy provides coverage for a specific trip, typically encompassing the duration of your travel and offering protection against various unforeseen events during that period.

Multi-Trip Insurance: Also known as annual travel insurance, this policy is designed for frequent travelers, offering coverage for multiple trips within a specified timeframe, often a year. It provides convenience and cost-effectiveness for individuals who embark on several journeys throughout the year.

Medical Insurance: Tailored for travelers who prioritize medical coverage, this type of insurance focuses on providing extensive medical protection, including emergency medical treatment, evacuation, and repatriation.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance: This policy reimburses non-refundable trip costs if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to covered reasons such as illness, injury, or other unforeseen circumstances.

Baggage Insurance: Specifically targeting the risk of baggage loss, damage, or theft, this insurance offers reimbursement for personal belongings and essential items in the event of baggage-related mishaps during your travels.

Adventure or Hazardous Activity Insurance: Geared towards thrill-seekers and adventurers, this type of insurance provides coverage for high-risk activities such as mountaineering, scuba diving, and extreme sports, which may not be included in standard travel insurance policies.

These are just a few examples of the diverse types of travel insurance available to cater to the unique needs and preferences of travelers. When choosing a policy, it’s essential to assess your specific requirements, the nature of your trip, and the level of coverage needed to ensure comprehensive protection throughout your travels.

How to Choose the Right Travel Insurance

Choosing the right travel insurance involves careful consideration of various factors to ensure that the policy aligns with your specific travel needs and provides comprehensive coverage. Here are essential guidelines to help you select the most suitable travel insurance:

Assess Your Travel Needs: Begin by evaluating the nature of your trip, including the destination, duration, activities planned, and potential risks associated with the journey. This assessment will guide you in determining the necessary coverage for your travels.

Coverage Options: Consider the types of coverage offered by different insurance policies, such as medical expenses, trip cancellation/interruption, baggage loss, and emergency assistance. Prioritize policies that align with your specific needs and provide comprehensive protection.

Policy Exclusions and Limitations: Thoroughly review the policy exclusions and limitations to understand the circumstances and events not covered by the insurance. This clarity is crucial in avoiding unpleasant surprises when filing a claim.

Compare Multiple Quotes: Obtain quotes from reputable insurance providers and compare the coverage, premiums, deductibles, and additional benefits offered by each policy. This comparative analysis will enable you to make an informed decision based on the value and suitability of the coverage.

Read Reviews and Ratings: Research customer reviews and ratings of insurance providers to gauge their reputation, customer service, and claim settlement efficiency. Opt for insurers with a strong track record of reliability and responsive support.

Consult with an Expert: If you are uncertain about the intricacies of travel insurance or require personalized guidance, consider consulting with an insurance expert or agent. Their expertise can assist you in navigating the complexities of travel insurance and selecting the most appropriate policy.

By methodically considering these factors and diligently researching your options, you can make an informed decision when choosing travel insurance. The goal is to secure a policy that not only offers financial protection but also aligns with your travel aspirations, providing the assurance to embark on your journeys with confidence and security.

Travel insurance serves as a crucial safeguard, offering protection, support, and peace of mind throughout your travel adventures. By understanding the purpose and significance of travel insurance, as well as the diverse coverage options available, you can make informed decisions to ensure comprehensive protection during your journeys.

From mitigating financial risks associated with trip cancellations and medical emergencies to providing assistance in navigating unforeseen challenges, travel insurance is a reliable companion that empowers you to embrace the excitement of travel without undue worry. Its versatility, encompassing various types of coverage tailored to distinct travel needs, underscores its value as an essential component of trip planning.

When selecting travel insurance, it’s imperative to assess your specific requirements, compare coverage options, and consider policy exclusions to secure the most suitable protection. By prioritizing comprehensive coverage, reputable insurers, and personalized guidance when needed, you can embark on your travels with confidence, knowing that you are equipped with a safety net to navigate unforeseen circumstances.

Ultimately, travel insurance offers more than just financial protection; it provides the assurance to fully immerse yourself in the richness of travel experiences, explore new horizons, and create lasting memories, knowing that you are supported by a reliable safety net. What is Travel Security?

Travel Security is a broad category that can include

  • Advance knowledge and training on how to travel safely in a specific location.
  • Confirmation of a traveller’s wellbeing when they’re away from home.
  • Security alerts related to the traveller’s location.
  • Adequate travel insurance.
  • Global Security Operations Centres (GSOCs), which are 24/7 call centres that will coordinate getting a traveller out of trouble.

Travel Security should be part of any employer’s overall duty-of-care policies and procedures for employees’ health and wellbeing.

For individual travellers, Travel Security helps you travel safely and gives your family and friends peace of mind.

Before we get into the scary bits...

Most of the time, travel goes fine. You’ve probably missed connections or had flights delayed or cancelled. You may have spent restless hours in airport lounges, but you’ve most likely not been in danger.

Travel Security is all about preparedness and avoiding danger. It’s vital that individual travellers and travel managers receive real-time information about global incidents that may affect them. On the rare occasion that something dangerous does occur, Travel Security prepares you to cope with it.

Collaboration works best

The best way to ensure employees are following security measures is through communication and training. Imposing measures, and insisting on them as a condition of employment, doesn’t achieve the same level of cooperation as developing the policies with the team. Imposed policies can create an environment of resentment, in which employees will do what they want anyway.

If you’re thinking of introducing new travel security procedures, we recommend you consult your travellers, get their feedback on the benefits or downsides, and ask them how best to implement the procedures you collectively choose.

What is an employer’s duty of care for employees who travel?

This is a huge topic, and laws vary country by country. Most countries’ laws use words such as “taking reasonable care to ensure that employees are safe when travelling for their employer”.

Not surprisingly, the United States leads the way in employees, or the dependants of deceased employees, suing employers for injury or death. For this reason, as compared to other countries, US corporations may have more stringent travel safety procedures, more resources set aside to resolve dangerous situations, and more employee security training.

Wherever you’re based, you can be pretty sure there will be consequences for your company if an employee is injured or dies whilst travelling for you. If you can document that you had security measures in place, and you followed those measures, it may reduce your liability.

Global Security Operations Centres

GSOCs are generally 24/7 call centres that are expert in assisting people in trouble. Some providers are large enough, for example, to have their own aircraft to evacuate employees. Others act as coordinators, using sub-contractors to carry out rescues.

Either way, rescue services will mean additional costs. So in addition to having access to a 24/7 GSOC, you must also have adequate funding or insurance to cover these costs.

GSOCs also have expert knowledge of when, for example, the best option is to shelter in place, rather than evacuate.

A side note...

Travel Tracking is also a major component of Travel Security. See the Travel Tracking tools page.

In conclusion...

Put travel security procedures in place in a manner that encourages folks to follow them. Be prepared. Stay safe out there. Please.

What is trip delay insurance?

What does trip delay insurance cover, trip delay insurance via credit card, trip delay coverage via travel insurance, trip delay insurance recapped.

Despite what many travelers may believe, there is no federal law in the U.S. requiring airlines to provide passengers with compensation for a delayed flight. Even if an airline’s policy is to provide meals or lodging, it will rarely do so if the delay is due to weather or another factor it considers beyond its control.

Fortunately, many premium credit cards and travel insurance providers offer trip delay insurance, which can cover expenses like overnight accommodation and meals if your flight is significantly delayed.

Here's how trip delay insurance works and where you can get it.

Trip delay insurance is protection against additional expenses you incur when your travel booked on a common carrier is delayed. Common carriers include airlines, ferry operators, passenger railroads and long-distance bus service.

However, not every delay is eligible for coverage under trip delay insurance. The policy’s terms will specify the length of the delay required before coverage kicks in, but many policies require a minimum delay of six to 12 hours — or an overnight stay.

Trip delay insurance offered by credit cards is generally considered secondary to other coverage you might receive, meaning that if your airline provides you with a hotel room or meals, you wouldn't be able to claim those things under your credit card’s trip delay insurance.

» Learn more: How do travel insurance claims work?

Trip delay insurance policies differ, but typically they cover reimbursement for necessary expenses incurred due to a travel delay. Unlike airlines’ policies which cover delays under their control only, trip delay insurance also covers delays due to weather or other unforeseen events. Coverage is typically limited to a specific dollar amount per day or per trip.

Purchases that are often covered under trip delay insurance include:

Medication.

Toiletries.

Transportation to and from your hotel.

Other personal use items.

Many travelers already have trip delay insurance and don’t even know it. Check your credit card’s benefits to see if you’re already covered. Here are the policies and limits for those who hold certain American Express or Chase travel cards .

American Express

American Express offers trip delay insurance with most of its premium cards, including Centurion cards, Platinum cards, Gold cards and its high-tier co-branded hotel and airline credit cards. Here are some American Express travel cards that include trip delay insurance:

Terms apply.

American Express also includes trip delay protection on small-business, co-branded and corporate varieties of the above cards.

To be eligible for coverage, you must do the following:

Pay for your travel with your eligible American Express card.

Book a trip that starts and ends in the same city and is no longer than 365 days.

If you use points, certificates or vouchers, the cash component of the ticket must be paid for using your eligible card.

AmEx trip delay insurance also provides coverage for the cardholder’s family members and traveling companions when their travel is also booked using the cardholder’s eligible American Express card.

Coverage kicks in when your trip is delayed more than six hours. Eligible reimbursements include meals, lodging, toiletries, medication and other personal use items.

Who is covered, what is covered and coverage amounts vary by plan and issuer. Also, not all travel insurance providers offer trip delay insurance, so be sure to review coverage details before making a purchase.

Here are three providers that offer travel insurance including trip delay protection.

Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz offers travel delay protection as part of many of its travel insurance packages. For example, the OneTrip Prime package includes coverage for expenses up to $800 per trip ($200 per day) and is effective once your trip is delayed by five hours or more.

Allianz coverage can also reimburse expenses if you miss your cruise or tour due to a covered delay. In addition to single-trip packages, Allianz offers annual travel insurance for the frequent traveler.

Berkshire Hathaway

Berkshire Hathaway offers per-trip insurance packages that include trip cancellation and interruption insurance , medical expense reimbursement , evacuation insurance and travel delay coverage.

Berkshire’s ExactCare Value plan includes $500 of travel delay insurance, but for those needing more protection, the ExactCare Extra plan provides up to $1,000 of protection.

You may have seen Travelex currency exchange counters at major airports, but the company also provides travel insurance. All of Travelex’s travel insurance plans include trip delay protection, starting with $500 of coverage for the Travel Basic plan and going up to $2,000 for the Travel Select and Travel America plans.

You can also shop for providers and compare coverage plans with travel insurance search engines like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth .

If your travel insurance policy includes trip delay coverage, then yes, you are eligible for compensation for expenses up to a certain amount accrued when your travel on a common carrier is delayed.

Generally, travel on a common carrier must be delayed by at least six hours before coverage kicks in.

Most trip delay policies cover necessary expenses incurred during the delay. Covered expenses generally include meals, lodging, toiletries, transportation and other personal items.

Trip interruption insurance differs from trip delay insurance in that it covers expenses incurred post-departure. Should you miss or be unable to complete a portion of your trip after initial departure, you'll be reimbursed for unused, prepaid, nonrefundable expenses and may be eligible for reimbursement of additional costs like hotel nights and flights home.

Unexpected delays can happen to anyone when traveling. Understanding what trip protection benefits are available to you will save you stress and money in case you encounter a lengthy travel delay.

If you hold one of the many premium credit cards that offer trip delay insurance, take a moment to read your card’s terms and conditions to understand what coverage you have. If not, you can still access trip delay benefits by purchasing a standalone travel insurance policy.

What is Travel Insurance?

What is Travel Insurance?

Last Updated: February 14, 2019 July 29, 2024

Travel insurance is designed to provide financial protection for unexpected events that impact a traveler’s trip. Popular benefits on a travel insurance policy include coverage for trip cancellations, medical emergencies, travel delays, and luggage. There are three different types of travel insurance policies: single trip, annual, and group.

Single Trip Travel Insurance Policies

Single trip travel insurance covers travelers for one trip, starting when they leave home and ending when they return. A single trip policy can cover up to 10 travelers on international or domestic trips.

Travelers who are concerned about having to cancel their trip should consider a single trip policy with Trip Cancellation coverage. This benefit reimburses insured trip expenses if a traveler is unable to travel for one of the policy’s covered reasons. Travelers must insure all or some of their trip cost to be eligible for this benefit. Single trip policies with Trip Cancellation are the most common type of travel insurance policy purchased.

Most cancellation-style policies are comprehensive, covering travelers for their trip payments, medical emergencies, travel delays, and luggage. This type of single trip policy typically costs between 4% and 10% of a traveler’s trip cost, depending on their age, the length of their trip, and their total trip cost.

Travelers who are not concerned about cancelling do not need to insure a trip cost, and can buy a single trip, non-cancellation style policy to cover medical emergencies, travel delays, and luggage. Because there is no insured trip cost, these policies are typically less expensive. However, except for Trip Cancellation coverage, the benefits included are usually the same.

Annual Travel Insurance Policies

Annual travel insurance policies are designed to cover travelers taking multiple short trips throughout a year. Travelers select a specific start date, also called an Effective Date , for an annual policy, which can be the departure date for their first trip. An annual policy will last one year from that date.

Annual policies typically limit how long one trip can last, and may have limits for how many trips can be taken throughout the year. The Maximum Trip Length ranges from 30-365 days, depending on the policy.

The coverage offered on an annual policy usually differs from a single trip policy. Most annual policies are primarily designed to provide medical coverage, offering  Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation benefits. These policies typically do not include Trip Cancellation coverage.

Group Travel Insurance Policies

While a single trip policy can cover up to 10 travelers, group travel insurance allows parties of 10 or more travelers to purchase one policy for their trip. Group policies offer benefits similar to single trip policies, including coverage for cancellations, medical emergencies, travel delays, and luggage.

Purchasing a group travel insurance policy can be a more convenient and affordable option for organized groups traveling together. The premium of a group policy does not take the travelers’ ages into account. Therefore, because age is one of the main factors that determines a policy’s premium – along with trip cost and trip length – group policies can be significantly less expensive per traveler.

Self-Transfer Guarantee Terms and Conditions

  • We’re here to help, and the following guarantee (the “Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee”) describes our ("Trip.com", "us", "we" or "our" as the context requires) commitment to ensuring you get to your destination as quickly as possible.
  • The Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee is generally applicable to itineraries bought from Trip.com that consist of two or more “legs” and which require you to connect from a flight operated by one carrier to a flight operated by a different carrier (a “Self-Transfer Itinerary”). For example, a Trip.com Self-Transfer Itinerary might originate in city A, with a 3-hour layover in city B, and then require a flight onward with a different carrier to city C.
  • Where the Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee is applicable, this will be clearly notified to you at the point of purchase and stated on your booking details page. You may also be given the option to upgrade the Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee by purchasing additional self-transfer services for USD10 (“ Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee ”). The additional services included in the Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee will be highlighted at the time of purchase and are also set out in these Terms and Conditions.
  • By using the Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee or the Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee (each a “ Guarantee ” and together the “ Guarantees ”), you are deemed to have accepted and agreed to comply with these Terms and Conditions. Please read these Terms and Conditions carefully (in particular the sections highlighted in bold ).
  • The Guarantees do not apply in circumstances where you miss a transfer for reasons other than one of the flights within a Self-Transfer Itinerary being affected by a delay, a cancellation, or a reschedule event. See section 5 below for more information.
  • We may amend these Terms and Conditions from time to time. The date that amendments were last made will be displayed at the top of these Terms and Conditions, and any amendments will take effect upon posting. Every time you wish to purchase a Self-Transfer Itinerary and/or the Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee, please check these Terms and Conditions to ensure you understand the terms that apply at that time.
  • The Guarantees are issued by Trip.com Travel Singapore Pte. Ltd., a limited liability company with its address at 1 Harbourfront Ave, #03-12/13, Keppel Bay Tower, Singapore. We are a global online travel agency.
  • By making a claim under a Guarantee, you hereby assign to us your present and future rights, title, and interest in all claims you may have against the relevant airlines in connection with the relevant Trigger Event (including, without limitation, under EU regulation 261/2004) and agree not to enter into any negotiations or accept any offers either directly or indirectly (via a third party) from the relevant airline. See section 6 below for more information.
  • When using our website or app and purchasing travel products, our General Terms and Conditions will also apply https://pages.trip.com/service-guideline/terms-en-us.html .

Activating a Guarantee

  • The Guarantees may be activated where one of the flights within a Self-Transfer Itinerary is affected by a delay, a cancellation, or a reschedule event (“Affected Flight”) which results in the period of time between the revised arrival time of the affected flight and the immediately following connecting flight being reduced to less than 2 hours (“Trigger Event”) .
  • You can activate the Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee by informing us of the existence of the Trigger Event either by phone or email using the contact details provided in your booking confirmation email. In cases where we are independently informed of the Trigger Event, we may contact you directly to notify you and give you the option of activating the Trip.com Self-Transfer Guarantee. If you purchased the Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee, we will always contact you directly to notify you and active the Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee.
  • For the avoidance of any doubt, when the use of a Guarantee results in booking a new flight and the new flight is operated by a different airline to the original flight, the Guarantee will be deemed as having been used and Trip.com will not be obligated to provide the Guarantee to any Trigger Event that occurs to the new flight.
  • The scope and protection provided by the Guarantees differ depending on whether the Trigger Event constitutes a "Short Notice Event" or a "Long Notice Event" and whether you have purchased the Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee.

1. Short Notice Event

  • 1.1 A Short Notice Event is where the delay, cancellation or reschedule event occurs at any time less than 48 hours prior to the affected flight’s originally scheduled take-off time (“Short Notice Event”) .
  • 1.2 Where a Guarantee is activated on the basis of a Short Notice Event, we’ll pull together an alternative travel plan for you as soon as we can. You must reply within 24 hours of us sending you the details of our proposed alternative travel plan to confirm whether you wish to accept it or reject it. If you’re not happy with the alternative travel plan we propose and choose to reject it, we may instead offer you a refund in respect of the affected and unused portion of your Self-Transfer Itinerary in accordance with the calculation described at section 1.5 below. Failure to reply to us within 24 hours, or to agree an alternative travel plan or refund prior to the affected flight’s originally scheduled take-off time, may result in the Guarantee being invalidated.
  • 1.3 In addition to the rights afforded to you under section 1.2, in circumstances where you are notified of the Short Notice Event less than 12 hours prior to the affected flight’s originally scheduled take-off time, you shall be entitled to propose your own alternative travel plan for consideration. Where you propose a travel plan to us for consideration: (i) this shall be approved by us at our sole discretion and will not cover the expense of any non-essential or additional services or upgrades included as part of the proposed travel plan; (ii) any subsequent unauthorized changes by you to your travel plan will disqualify you from the Guarantee and you acknowledge and agree that you will have no claim for performance of it against us in those circumstances. Where we reject a travel plan you have proposed, you shall be entitled to a Trip.com-sourced alternative travel plan or refund pursuant to section 1.2.
  • 1.4 In addition to the rights afforded to you under sections 1.2 and 1.3, in circumstances where you are notified of the Short Notice Event less than 4 hours prior to the affected flight's originally scheduled take-off time and you were unable to contact us (after making reasonable attempts to do so), the Guarantee will permit you to make your own, unapproved booking of flight(s) comparable to the delayed, canceled, or rescheduled flight(s) in your Self-transfer Itinerary. In such circumstances Trip.com will, upon receipt of satisfactory evidence of expense, reimburse you in respect of the full amount of the unused portion of your Self-transfer Itinerary in accordance with the terms described in section 1.5 below, or if you purchased our Upgraded Self-transfer Guarantee (and the calculation amounts to less than US$1,000), up to US$1,000.
  • 1.5 Where you are entitled to a refund or reimbursement in accordance with sections 1.2, 1.4, or 2.2, the value of the unused portion of your Self-transfer Itinerary will be calculated using the formula: (mileage of unused leg(s) / mileage of total trip) × total price paid. For example, if your Self-transfer Itinerary consisted of two legs each of 500 miles duration and was purchased by you for GBP500, then the amount of refund / reimbursement you would be entitled to where the first leg was subject to a delay, cancellation, or reschedule event would be: (500 / 1000) × 500 = GBP250 . As noted above, if you purchased our Upgraded Self-transfer Guarantee (and the calculation amounts to less than US$1,000), Trip.com will reimburse you up to US$1,000. Subject to sections 1.6 and 2.3, refunds and reimbursements provided under this section 1.5 shall be in cash. This section is subject to the section on Alternative Transportation to Final Destination below.
  • 1.6 If you purchased our Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee and are due a refund or reimbursement in accordance with sections 1.2, 1.4, and 1.5, you will have the option to be refunded or reimbursed in either cash or in Trip Coins. For more information on Trip Coins please go to https://us.trip.com/customer/loyalty .
  • Where a Short Notice Event occurs, the following additional services may be requested when contacting us to activate the Guarantee (“Additional Services”):
  • Alternative Transportation to Final Destination: We’re happy to consider any suggestions you may have regarding alternative travel methods such as bus, boat, or train. Where possible, we will factor this into the alternative travel plan we propose. Where alternative transportation is accepted as part of an alternative travel plan, we will reimburse the cost of alternative transportation up to the amount of or currency equivalent to USD120 per ticketed passenger.
  • Alternative Transportation to a Different Airport: We’re happy to cover the cost of airport transfers up to the amount of or currency equivalent to USD120 per ticketed passenger, where this is a necessary part of the alternative travel plan.
  • Accommodation Expenses: In the event that the alternative travel plan involves an overnight connection that results in you needing to stay at the airport for more than 8 hours in order to make a connecting flight that departs after midnight (12am), we are happy to reimburse you accommodation expenses up to the amount of or currency equivalent to USD50 per room during that layover period subject to availability and provided that (i) such accommodation is selected and paid for by us via our own booking channels; and (ii) transportation to/from the hotel is paid for by you. If you purchased our Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee, we will reimburse you accommodation expenses up to the amount of or currency equivalent to USD350 per room.
  • Meal Expenses: Where the agreed alternative travel plan requires you to wait more than 4 hours consecutively in a connecting airport, we will reimburse you for food or meal expenses up to the amount of or currency equivalent to USD15 per ticketed passenger per day on the alternative travel plan. If you purchased our Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee, we will reimburse you for food or meal expenses up to the amount of or currency equivalent to USD30 per ticketed passenger per day.
  • Where you are offered any compensation deemed to be equivalent to the Additional Services by the airline and/or airport, we shall no longer be obliged to compensate and/or reimburse you in respect of those Additional Services. Please note that Additional Services are only available when you agree with our suggested alternative travel plan.

2. Long Notice Event

  • 2.1 A Long Notice Event is where the delay, cancellation, or reschedule event occurs at any time 48 hours or more from the affected flight’s original takeoff time (“Long Notice Event”) .
  • 2.2 Where a Guarantee is activated on the basis of a Long Notice Event, we’ll pull together an alternative travel plan for you as soon as we can. You must reply within 24 hours of us sending you the details of our proposed alternative travel plan, to confirm whether you wish to accept it or reject it. If you’re not happy with the alternative travel plan we propose and choose to reject it, we may instead offer you a refund in respect of the unused portion of your Self-Transfer Itinerary in accordance with the calculation described in section 1.5 above. Failure to reply to us within 24 hours, or to agree an alternative travel plan or refund prior to the affected flight’s originally scheduled take-off time, may result in the Guarantee being invalidated.
  • 2.3 If you purchased our Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee and are due a refund in accordance with sections 2.2 and 1.5, you will have the option to be refunded or reimbursed in either cash or in Trip Coins. For more information on Trip Coins please go to https://us.trip.com/customer/loyalty .

3. Communications

  • All notices and communications made by us to you will be deemed to have been received on the date and time on which the communication was first transmitted by us.
  • Unless we are advised otherwise, all notices and communications will be sent to the email address and/or phone number associated with your Trip.com user account when the flights were originally booked.
  • Where a notice or communication stipulates that a response is required within a specific timeframe, failure to respond within this timeframe will result in disqualification of the Guarantee.

4. Refunds and Payments

  • Our Upgraded Self-Transfer Guarantee is non-refundable once purchased.
  • All eligible refunds or reimbursements under the Guarantees shall be paid by us to the payment card or account used to make your original booking within 14 business days of us receiving all necessary documentation and information. The date that any refund or reimbursement will be paid into your account is subject to the provider of your account.
  • Where you are eligible for a refund or reimbursement, payment will be conditional on you providing us with suitable copies of receipts or any other reasonably requested supporting information.

5. Exceptions and Limitations

  • For the purposes of this section, “Unavoidable Events” refer to extraordinary or unforeseen circumstances and includes, but is not limited to, pandemics, acts of god, extreme weather or geological events, political or security issues, unexpected flight safety deficiencies or strikes that affect the operation of an operating air carrier or destination airport.
  • Where Unavoidable Events result in delay, cancellation, or rescheduling of the first flight in your Self-Transfer Itinerary (i) the Guarantees cannot be relied on for such first flight - under these circumstances it will be the relevant airline carrier’s responsibility to secure alternative travel arrangements for you and you should contact them, and (ii) the Guarantees can be relied on for any subsequent flights in your Self-Transfer Itinerary.
  • The Guarantees do not apply in circumstances where you miss a transfer for reasons other than one of the flights within a Self-Transfer Itinerary being affected by a delay, a cancellation, or a reschedule event, including but not limited to failing to make the transfer in time or being excluded from a flight as a result of your own acts, omissions, fault, or negligence, for example, due to unacceptable behavior or conduct, health or safety grounds or being in possession of inadequate travel documentation.
  • The Guarantees shall not apply in circumstances where a delay in the airport such as at immigration and passport control or baggage collection results in a missed flight.
  • By making a claim under a Guarantee, you hereby assign to us your present and future rights, title and interest in all claims you may have against the relevant airlines in connection with the relevant Trigger Event (including, without limitation, under EU regulation 261/2004) and agree not to enter into any negotiations or accept any offers either directly or indirectly (via a third party) with the relevant airline.
  • By activating a Guarantee you agree you will provide us and our authorized representatives with all reasonable assistance, cooperation, and any requested documentation to allow us to process and enforce any such claims.
  • You agree that we and/or our authorized representatives may represent you in the enforcement and pursuit of any claims against third parties and that you will provide all reasonable assistance, documentation, and information to us to allow us to pursue such claims on your behalf. Where we are successful in pursuing any claim on your behalf, you agree we are entitled at our sole discretion to deduct from any award of damages, our reasonable costs and expenses incurred in connection with that claim and in fulfilling our obligations to you under the Guarantee.
  • This section does not apply if you have purchased any ancillary products on Trip.com to assist with laws such as EU regulation 261/2004.
  • These Terms and Conditions and any dispute or claim (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising out of them, their subject matter or formation shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the law of Singapore, although this shall not deprive you of any mandatory consumer rights of the law of the country in which you are resident in.
  • You and we both agree that the courts of Singapore will have jurisdiction over any dispute or claim (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising out of or in connection with these Terms and Conditions or their subject matter or formation, although this shall not deprive you of any mandatory right to choose instead to resolve any such dispute or claim in the courts of the country in which you are resident.
  • Where the original English version of these terms has been translated into other languages, the English version shall prevail in the event of any inconsistencies between the versions.
  • These terms are between you and us. No other person shall have any rights to enforce any of these terms.
  • If any court or relevant authority finds that part of these terms are illegal, the rest will continue in full force and effect.
  • Even if we delay enforcing these terms, we may still take steps against you at a later date.

Safe travels or safe travel

The next time someone you know is traveling somewhere or going on a trip, you might want to wish them a safe journey without any problems. But, what is the correct expression for this? Is it “safe travels” or safe travel”?

Let’s take a look at the correct way to wish someone a safe journey.

Table of Contents

Safe travels or safe travel?

Both safe travels and safe travel are correct ways of wishing someone a safe journey. However, “safe travels” is much more commonly used.

Safe travels

The meaning of safe travels is to wish someone a safe journey and good fortune on their trip.

Safe travels implies that the person being spoken to is involved in some sort of extended traveling where there will be more than one “travel”. For example, they could be about to go traveling around South America or Asia. Alternatively, it implies that several travels or journeys will occur within a singular trip. Therefore, safe travels uses the countable form of the noun, because there is more than one travel.

Safe travel

Safe travel uses the uncountable form of the noun. It refers to all of the travels the person being spoken to might collectively make on a particular trip. Although you’ll rarely hear this used.

Travel safe, on the other hand, is a lot more common. This is a polite way of wishing someone a safe journey. It is a friendly imperative that is often used when seeing off friends or family before a trip and expresses that you hope they have a pleasant, uneventful journey.

When is the correct time to wish someone safe travels?

You can wish someone safe travels when you want to wish them a good, safe journey. This might be before they are going to teach English abroad, going on holiday, or if they’re embarking on a long trip home.

Other ways to say safe travels

There are also other ways to express safe travels, such as:

  • Travel safely.
  • Have a good trip.
  • Have a safe trip.
  • Have a safe journey.
  • Drive safe.
  • Bon voyage.

You can also say safe trip and safe journey, but we usually add “Have a..” in front of this.

What about bon voyage?

Yes, I know what you’re thinking, doesn’t Bon Voyage sound French? Well, yes, it is French and it literally means “safe journey” or “have a good trip”. It is one of a number of foreign words that are used in the English language.

Conclusion: Safe travels

So, until next time, I wish you safe travels! Best wishes for your onward journey through the English language .

Travel insurance is necessary for ensuring that you have a worry-free trip and are protected from any unforeseen risks or losses that may occur during your trip. Having a travel insurance policy ensures that you are protected in case of an emergency by getting benefits such as personal accident cover, medical expenses cover, cashless hospitalisation, cover for loss of passport, trip delay and cancellation, baggage loss and other risks that you might face while travelling.

Buying a travel insurance policy before your trip is critical. One reason is that medical treatment overseas is expensive. Your travel insurance policy will cover the emergency hospitalisation and medical expenses, so that the required treatment can be received timely without inconvenience.

In case of trip delay or trip cancellation, most of us can’t afford to bear the loss of the vacation investment. With travel insurance, you can get trip cancellation benefits and reimbursements for covered reasons. The case of loss of belongings, loss of baggage and loss of passport can create a situation of panic, especially if you are in a foreign location and don’t know what to do. Travel insurance will help you with emergency funds needed in such a scenario.

If you miss your flight connection due to reasons out of your control or if your flight gets cancelled, your travel cover will provide you with assistance services to arrange and pay for the travel changes and cover other expenses.

Without travel insurance, minor inconveniences may cost you a fortune and may ruin your trip. Hence, taking a sufficient cover is always advisable for a smooth trip.

Inclusions of Flight Travel Insurance

Before buying any type of travel insurance , it is important to know all the inclusions and exclusions to make a wise decision. Find below the inclusions of flight travel insurance:

  • Trip Cancellation/Curtailment

You might have to cancel or postpone your trip for some reason, like, one of your family members falls sick, etc. If you provide your insurance company with a valid reason, they will compensate for the loss incurred on these cancelled flight tickets.

  • Partial Disability or Accidental Death

In case there is an accident involving your flight, which leads to partial disability or death, an active flight insurance policy entitles you to compensation.

  • Flight Delay

Flight delay is common and can happen due to several reasons, like bad weather conditions, technical glitch, etc. Due to this delay, you might miss your important meetings or face financial loss if you miss your hotel booking. Nonetheless, if you have flight travel insurance, you will be compensated in the best way possible.

  • Baggage Insurance

You might lose your checked-in baggage with essential things like your medicines, etc., during the transit. Apart from that, your baggage might get delayed due to other reasons. If you have active flight travel insurance, you will be compensated by the insurance provider for this delay or loss to have a smooth trip ahead.

  • Missed Connection Flight

When you travel to far-off places, you might need to take multiple interconnecting flights. But, if your first flight gets delayed, you might miss other interconnecting flights. In this case, apart from flight tickets, you might have to incur the loss of reserved hotel bookings, scheduled meetings, etc. The insurance provider offers compensation for the same so that you can enjoy your trip without any worry of additional expenses.

  • Flight Hijack

In case of flight hijacking, the insurance provider will provide you with compensation if you die or get partially disabled.

  • Medical Emergency

In case any medical emergency arises during the flight journey in India, the expenses incurred for the same will be reimbursed by the insurance provider. Otherwise, it might cost you a considerable amount.

Therefore, it is important to buy flight travel insurance to travel securely and remain secure against uncertain events. We at Tata AIG provide all the benefits mentioned above under flight travel insurance, depending on the plan you choose, to help you experience a worry-free trip and enjoy it to the fullest.
