Stache bottom bracket replacement

  • Add to quote

I've been riding a 2017 Stache 9.6 since spring, love the bike, but the bottom bracket shell has me scratching my head. The original BB is toast after about 400 miles, so I removed it. Most BB shells are a "straight" tube, not so on the Stache. The lower seat stay has a slightly concave shape which protrudes into the bottom bracket shell just enough to make most bottom brackets with a center sleeve unusable. I tried two different Wheels Manufacturing products, the pressfit that threads together and the pure pressfit, neither will work. This frame looks to require a BB that is merely two cups without a center sleeve which is hard to find. That or I continue to use the SRAM $30 bottom bracket that creaks and has zero life. Has anyone found a better solution ? :madmax:

trek stache 2017

I replaced mine with a Raceface x type pressfit, but I have the alloy frame. Not sure if that matters. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk

Can you confirm that this Hope BB worked on your Stache? I have a new 17 frame and am looking for the correct BB. THanks!

trek stache 2017

Can you educate me as to how a bottom bracket doesn't or "didnt" last any longer than that? That seems premature.

Premature is probably right but mine was creaking enough to make me look for a better option. There doesn't seem to be a better bb option for this frame unless you choose a bb with no center sleeve (cups only).

I have a 2016 5 and I only got about 400 to 500 miles on my BB and it started creaking, the drive side bearing was a little bit sticky, I put in a Wheels Manufacturing press in, it creaked too, They sent me a thread together bottom bracket and it also creaked after about 20 miles, it was one of the 70 dollar threaded ones. I took it back apart and I used a bearing retainer blue Loctite, stuff dries really fast, I let it dry for a day then I got another 15 mile ride in no creaking then the next day 7 miles into my ride it started creaking again, I was so pissed I parked the bike and road my other bikes for the next two weeks,. Then I tried to re-tighten it and it wouldn't budge I then did a short ride and no creaking, that was on the 7th of this month 8i haven't had time to get out yet again. My plan if it continues to be a problem, I'm going to put in a even more expensive bottom bracket, if that doesn't work I'll look for a different kind of frame. Thus type bottom bracket is just a bad idea. Why they didn't make this size of the tubing a threaded right into the frame bottom bracket is beyond me.

I didn't find one.....I had ordered the Wheels Manufacturing thread-together bb86/92 bottom bracket but as you figured out the scalloped seat-tube does not allow for a bb with a thick inner tube to fit. I am not sure that the hope would work but it may.....I ended up sticking another crappy plastic cup bb (sram) and now I make sure I don't ford streams high enough to soak the bottom bracket area.

I put another SRAM in as well. There has to be a better solution than this...

trek stache 2017

I'm assuming that based on your comments that this would not be able to solve the creaking problems? https://www.bbinfinite.com/products/bb92-directfit-shimano?variant=9864646467 The research I've done has said that this has almost universally solved creaking on PF BB"s! But I'm not sure that this will "press thru" on our Stache frames. Thanks CJB

It would depend on the outside diameter of the "tube" in the middle. Given that it looks to be almost the diameter of the cups, it's doubtful. Great looking product though.

Some guys over at the Trek Stache Group on FB are pondering this same issue: BB upgrade on the carbon Staches: https://www.facebook.com/groups/178493262516578/ Among the solutions... "The carbon frames don't accept 30mm BB spindles either. But I lightly sanded the inside of the frame to get the clearance I needed. It's been over a year now with no ill effects." "A buddy of mine uses a Chris king in his 2017 9.6 and has no issues... He uses a "Chris King Pressfit 24 Stainless" and just pulled off the plastic sheath in the middle." "I use the RaceFace Next SL crankset with 30mm BB spindle, and RaceFace bottom bracket. I had to not use the plastic tube." Q:"No issue with moisture getting into the back side of the bearings with it exposed?" A:"No more than moisture getting in through the outside of the bearings."

Still searching for the "best" bottom bracket and crankset config for a 17 Stache frame. Its new with no crank or bb ever installed, so I want to make sure its the least trouble free (dreaded creaking) setup for this frame. So far, I have been looking at the new SRAM DUB - GX boost crank and BB. I am also looking at Shimano XT M8000-B1 boost crank - but not really sure which BB to use. Wheels Man. has this one, but again, not sure if it will clear the indented bb shell on the Stache or not. It it does, I would go for the XT. Any feedback on a reliable and creak-free setup if appreciated. THnx.... https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-bracke...contact-bb-for-24mm-shimano-cranks-black.html

Just heard back from the folks at wheelsmfg. and they will have a thread together BB for the new DUB cranks "in the future". Now just need to find out WHEN this might happen and will report back, hopefully soon. Best of both worlds, imo, will be just under 30mm spindle and thread-together BB!

trek stache 2017

I am using new DUB crankset on my 2018 carbon stache. Plastic sleeve bent a little while pushing it inside but otherwise its OK. From what I heard 2019 staches all use DUB. Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

True story. The DUB crank looks good and has an over-sized aluminum spindle, but I can do without the PF bb it uses from SRAM. Wheelsmfg, Enduro, and Chris King are the ones with the thread-together BB92 size bb that I am after. Now, who can make one fastest in the DUB configuration?

Just emailed RWC or enduroforkseals.com about this BB used on Pivot Cycles... https://www.enduroforkseals.com/pro...n/pf41/24x22/pivot_alloy_orig/92PIVGXPSS.html The machined aluminum center sleeve is a special narrow design that won't interfere with the extruded supports that protrude inside the Pivot aluminum BB shells....much like the slight protrusion in the Stache bb shell. Am looking to install a SRAM XX1 GXP 1X11-Speed 170 168 Q-Factor crankset. Waiting to hear back.

trek stache 2017

PF92 on this frame? It’ll be good to have the Wheels Mfg DUB threaded option for other Trek frames as well. Hopefully it’ll be available soon...

Chris from RWC responded quickly with this: "Thanks for contacting us! It's interesting that the frame shots I've seen of the alloy and carbon 2017 frames show the obstructions you mention only on the carbon model. If your frame has the same protrusions into the BB shell area, yes, I would go with our Pivot Alloy specific bottom bracket. Otherwise, I would go with this one": https://www.enduroforkseals.com/products/bottom-brackets/mountain/pf41/24x22/std_bb92/KC92GXPSS.html or this one: https://www.enduroforkseals.com/pro...ountain/pf41/24x22/std_bb92/BKS-0121-GXP.html

Did you try any of these options?

Yep, I used the Hope BB for my Stache carbon. It fits nicely and clears the protruding carbon bits inside the shell.

If the Stache had a threaded bottom bracket, I'd still be riding mine. Sweet bike! My bottom bracket shell began ovalizing and creaking. PF BBs are an epic failure. Why I'll never get a Trek unless it's an e-bike. Never get another Canyon unless it's an e-bike. (Motor is the BB) Absolutely the reason I got the Ragley Big Al and my Ripmo AF.

trek stache 2017

Just so you know, we use threaded BBs on a lot, if not most of our bikes now. Also, a lot of those ovalized BBs would happen from improper BB installation - even with a press people would still push them in on angles - an easy mistake and never noticed until later on when you're replacing it over again. My PF BBs are still round and true on three of our carbon frames at the house. No need to be afraid of a PF BB.

trek stache 2017

I have three PF carbon frames (one a 2013) and thankfully no BB issues. I hate messing/experimenting with the Stache but there are no good 24mm cranksets, are there?

jafoxmon said: I have three PF carbon frames (one a 2013) and thankfully no BB issues. I hate messing/experimenting with the Stache but there are no good 24mm cranksets, are there? Click to expand...

trek stache 2017

I’m going to put together a AL stache and I’ve never had a bike with a PF BB before. Is this the right wheels manufacturing BB for a AL stache with shimano slx cranks? BB86/92 Thread Together ABEC-3 BB for 24mm (Shimano) Cranks - Black

That would appear to be the correct BB for PF92/BB92 and Shimano 24mm spindle. A thread together BB is superior if it is able to clear the downtube impingement. I do not have an AL Stache nor have i replaced the BB in my carbon stache so hopefully someone with more experience will chime in. On another note I just installed the 9point8 Bravo Slack-R kit and OMG! I think I am appreciating the longer wheel base as much as the slacker head tube angle. .

Thanks for that info. Does the slack r headset give the fork enough room to clear the downtube? I.e. could you get rid of the knock block?

trek stache 2017

I have a 2018 AL Stache. It doesn’t have a knock-block. Just a plain ole’ FSA headset.

I don't have a knock block but 9point8 info suggests Slack-R kit eliminates it.

Took one of my bicycles in for them too work on after bringing it to another bicycle shop in Lewiston who charged me over 200$ and returned it to me with the same problems. I have done business with B&L in the past with excellent service but they are a good 2 hour drive from where I live so I gave this other place a shot. Needless to say that was a costly mistake. Went today to pick up my bike and leave another one for B&L to work on and low and behold, they put my bike I brought today right on the rack and it was good to go in less than 10 min. The fee for both of my bikes was a whopping $26. Not only is the customer service beyond exceptional, their knowledge of any bicycle is epic. The 2 hour drive was well worth it and B&L will be the only place I will take my bikes to and highly recommend them to anyone asking or looking for repair work or shopping for a new ride. Thanks again for taking great pride in what you do Bryce. We will be back.

I recently took my old GUNNAR Rock Tour into B&L Bikes to get it ready to start riding again. Since I had concentrated on dirt bike riding. My Rock Tour is set up for more road riding I had to get it back into shape as it had been parked for a few years. Well I took it in and Bryce and his crew were as great as when I first bought this bike back in the early 2000's. Yes it has been a while but B&L is still the best. I also have a Gary Fisher Paragon and a Trek Stache-5 also from B&L. Only place for me. Thanks Bryce

These people really care that you find the right ride and spend lengthy time fitting it for perfect enjoyment. Brice and all the others there are very knowledgable, friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this Bike Shop!

Friendly, very knowledgeable, great service. 2nd bike I have purchased from them and have been happy both times!

My son is a freshman at WSU. At his request I gave him my nearly 30 year old REI mountain bike. I had maintained it reasonably well over the years. He took it in to have the shifters adjusted. No Charge! My hat's off to the proprietor! It is unusual these days to find an honest businessman. Understand that I did not purchase the bicycle from the shop. If I ever purchase a bicycle again it will be from this establishment. Thank you so much!!!

Just bought another bike from B&L. And I read the other reviews, both good and bad. Here's the thing. Bikes, in the U.S., instead of truly being mainstreamed into our culture, still (especially on the Palouse) are still kind of a niche thing. The people that dedicate their life to cycle-culture in a part of the country that still kinda rejects it, are not going to be the standard issue. They're interesting, friendly, but also a little quirky. They're real people, and I'm glad of that every time I go into the store. If you want an upper end bike on the Palouse, with great service, and real personalities, this is the place. I think I'm on Bike #7 from them, and have been satisfied with every single one of them. Do I wish, sometimes, that there were greater choice? Yes. Am I glad, at least, that they are a distributor for Trek, most definitely one of the top brands? Yes. Do I recommend them all without reservation? Absolutely. Go in, get to know them, and buy a bike from them. It will definitely put you in your happy place!

As an avid bike rider in a small town I wanted to support the only locally owned bike shop in Pullman. I really tried hard to like this shop, but I just couldn't bring myself to shop there again after some pretty poor customer service. Don't get me wrong, I thought MOST of the staff were attentive and courteous, but the owner is very short with his answers and seems annoyed when I would ask him a question. I would think that the owner would bend over backwards to help someone spending money in his shop. I ended up going over to Moscow to purchase a new bike and really have no desire to return to B&L for any of my biking needs.

Photo of B B.

Stopped by here and decided to check out the E-bikes. We were first greeted by a younger salesman guy. He was super knowledgeable about the bikes and stayed with us til we had questions. Very professional. Hope the owners give this young dude recognition for this. Then we met one of the owners I think. Very nice guy who also answered all our questions and was an avid biker himself. Drove like 35 miles to wirk on his bike. Yes this is the type dude I want telling me about bikes. He knew his stuff and was super helpful. I then bought two Trek motorized bikes and after these guys kept talking them up so much I agree with them. I didnt want to stop riding these bikes lol. I rode to Walmart, Grocery store, you name it til nighttime. If your looking for bikes in this area this shop is great. Although how much I spent on these two bikes they shoulda thrown in one of the accessories I bought, the saddle bag, locks or somethin! as a gift or somethin. Lol. They get 5-stars

Photo of Craig A.

The best bike shop in the region. We come down from Spokane to buy our Treks, get professional fit and adjustments for our bikes, and enjoy the amazing service. These guys are true bike nerds and have been doing it for years. Their Precision Fit bike fit technology is cutting edge and way above the competition.

Photo of Colin M.

I have to disagree with Andy K.'s review. I have bought four bikes through B & L and have never received anything but EXCELLENT Service!. As far as the owner (Brice) is concerned, the man is an encyclopedia of bicycles and their mechanics. I have never found him to be short with answers. Actually quite the contrary. He has always taken time to answer any questions I had or straighten me out when I had been misinformed. The guys there at B & L, Sean, Grant, Bruce and the rest of the crew are AWESOME! I can always just stop in if I have a question and I am warmly welcomed. What people have to realize is this is a business and they do get busy, phone, repairs, orders, customers. And because they are so good they are always busy whether you see the store flooded with people or not.
