Where To Buy

Trek Logo

"Trek electric bikes are some of my favorites"

"It's nice to have a dropper post, fully-adjustable suspension, and a frame that is well-balanced. The drive system is positioned well and performs incredibly. Trek really dialed in their rear suspension and ABP reduces skipping so the rear wheel track the ground. The removable battery pack with a handle makes this an easy bike to lift, transport, service on the trail, and park securely."

"An absolute riot"

"On terrain that an elite-level XC racer would struggle to conquer, the Powerfly winched up huge mountains with seamless power delivery, especially in eMTB mode that automatically matches your effort. Planted and sure-footed on the descents, it gives you the confidence to release your grip on the powerful brakes and push the tires to the limit."

"Easily one of our top choices"

"The eMTB mode is a fantastic alternative to the manually adjusted power settings found on most other e-bikes. The beauty is that eMTB mode works so well, you can forget about it entirely and focus on the ride instead. Having e-bike specific forks and four piston brakes for example is something that seems obvious, but surprisingly few companies actually make happen."

Beefed up the parts to deal with the beatings that e-bikes get

Product Overview

Trek powerfly 9 lt.

  • Suspension, brakes and tyres are all on point. New battery layout is neat and easy to use.
  • Could have more generous reach measurements and shorter stems on all sizes.

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:.

Up hill or down, ebikes take an absolute beating, so the new Trek Powerfly 9 has a beefed up the parts package to handle the additional abuse.

>>> The best electric mountain bikes

Trek Powerfly 9 LT need to know

  • Integrated side-loading battery pack offers a sleek functional design
  • Trek’s ABP suspension pumps put 150mm travel, coupled with a 160mm Fox 36 fork
  • Bosch Performance CX motor and 500Wh battery packs on all models
  • Two new carbon version shares the same geometry and sizing as the alloy Powerfly LTs

trek powerfly

Forget torque, watts and even mismatched wheel sizes … integration is the real buzzword in ebike tech right now. And unless you go it alone with a custom motor like Rocky Mountain, something very few brands are prepared to risk, integration is currently about concealing the power-source.

trek powerfly

150mm travel offers adequate cushioning while crushing the descents

Now in its third generation the new Trek Powerfly LT 9 has one of the neatest battery concealing solutions we’ve seen to date. Not only is its drive-side loading internal battery a breeze to use, it means the down tube on the latest Powerfly LT doesn’t need to be disproportionally large to contain the battery, like say, the Shimano equipped BMC Trailfox AMP .

trek powerfly

Bosch PowerTube battery can be charged on or off the bike

Dubbed RIB, short for removable integrated battery, and with the protective cover positioned to one side the battery collects way less dirt too, so you’ll get way less grief for plugging the battery in next to the kettle for a quick charge. It even has a handy integrated carry handle for lugging it around. Best of all, RIB leaves plenty of space for a bottle cage, something that wasn’t possible with the battery position on the previous Powerfly LT.

trek powerfly

Purion display is Bosch’s most compact

In keeping with the pack-less riding experience, tabs under the top tube also let you attach a custom Wolf Tooth B-Rad storage strap so you can have a tube and CO2 canister with you at all times.

Other than the new downtube that houses the RIB battery, and the addition of the storage tabs under the top tube, the 2019 Powerfly LT 9 shares the same travel, geometry and attitude as the bike that won our e-bike test last year. Numbers that include a slack 66deg head angle (high setting) for increased steering stability and a generous size range that stretches from 15.5in all the way to 21.5in. Times are changing fast in the world of e-bikes though, and the reach numbers on the Trek look dated next to the Vitus E-Sommet that won our recent Enduro E-bike test.

The Powerfly LT 9 also has relatively long chain stays, 474mm to be precise. And while these aren’t really on trend and may even upset the balance of the bike on the smaller frame sizes, they are a godsend for taller riders on the 19.5in and 21.5in bikes as they help load the front end on flat corners to stop it lifting on the steepest climbs.

And boy did we ride some steep climbs on the launch of the Powerfly LT 9 in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, terrain that an elite level XC racer on a sub 20lb hardtail would struggle to conquer. On the Powerfly LT 9 however we winched our way up huge mountains with the assistance of the Bosch CX motor driving the new SRAM NX Eagle 11-50t cassette. Stay seated and the Trek offers seamless power delivery, especially in E-MTB mode that automatically toggles between Turbo, Sport and Tour modes to match your effort. Out of the saddle however the Trek has more pedal induced bob than e-bikes like the Vitus and Canyon equipped with full size chainrings rather than a tiny 15t driver cog.

It was on the descents however that the Powerfly LT 9 showed its true colours. Planted and sure footed, it gives you the confidence to release your grip on the powerful 4-pistion Shimano XT brakes and push the reinforced 2.8in Bontrager XR4 tyres to their very limit. With gravity working its magic the new Trek Powerfly LT 9 is an absolute riot, but at £5,200 it’s an expensive way to get your kicks when the Vitus costs £3,599.99

Tested: Trek Powerfly LT9

The not-so-minor details.

Trek Powerfly LT 9

https://www.trekbikes.com/au/en_AU/

An incredible technical climber. Built tough! Smooth power delivery. Excellent Bosch eMTB motor mode.

Slow speed manoeuvrability isn't great. Quite heavy.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

This isn’t the first time you’ve ridden this bike, right?

Correct. We attended the launch of this bike last year , but we always prefer to test bikes on home soil in Australian conditions. We went deep on the tech details, so make sure you take a look at our First Impressions piece and video here for all the nitty gritty.

In a nutshell then?

The Powerfly LT is the longest-travel eMTB in Trek’s lineup. It’s built tough, with an alloy frame (you can also get it in carbon with the 9.7 and 9.8 models), it has 150mm of rear travel with 160mm up front. It runs a Bosch Performance CX motor, powered by a 500w/h battery that can be easily removed from its down tube home.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

We’ve ridden this model quite a lot actually. It joined us in the Victorian High Country on a 10-day photo shoot late in 2018, and more recently we took this bike to Orange for a couple of days of adventures . We’ve certainly come to understand what this bike is all about, and it really does have some very clear strong suits. So rather than delving into every technical detail, we’ll stick to the areas that standout.

This bike’s potency on technical climbs will have you biting off the kind of terrain where such a low gear is warranted.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

The best climber in the business?

Like an unsupervised toddler, this bike will climb just about anything. We can’t think of another eMTB that will scale seemingly impossible terrain with so much aplomb. Contributing to the bike’s climbing prowess is the long rear end, which at 475mm is the longest we’ve ever ridden. Why so long? Such a long rear-centre means the front wheel doesn’t want to lift even on the steepest climbs, so you can just keep churning away at the pedals, letting the big 2.8″ Bontrager rubber do its traction making magic. You might look at the 50-tooth cog out back on this bike and wonder where on earth you’ll ever need it, but this bike’s potency on technical climbs will have you biting off the kind of terrain where such a low gear is warranted. Another key factor is the Bosch motor, which does a superb job of smooth power delivery, which leads us to our next point….

trek powerfly lt 9.9

We found it incredibly useful, especially when climbing on loose terrain, where you need to carefully regulate the amount of power going to your rear wheel in order to keep traction.

That adaptive motor is bliss.

We’re well accustomed now to the performance of Bosch CX motors like the one providing the pedal-assistance here. What makes this motor standout is the clever eMTB mode. This setting is adaptive, meaning that it alters the amount of power output constantly in response to your speed, pedalling force and cadence. We found it incredibly useful, especially when climbing on loose terrain, where you need to carefully regulate the amount of power going to your rear wheel in order to keep traction. It also shone on those steep, tight switchback climbs, where you need the power to come on gently to stop the bike from surging away from you mid-corner. Then, when you want full power, you just jump on the pedals hard and the motor responds with all the grunt you need.

Ultimately we just left the bike in eMTB mode 90% of the time, not worrying about the mode shifter at all. Speaking of which, we’d love to see the Purion display moved or downsized – it’s very vulnerable up there on the top of the bars and ours got scratch up in a crash.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

In slower situaitons there’s no hiding the weight of the bike, nor the impact of the long stays on its handling.

How does it handle away from the climbs?

Some eMTBs are getting pretty close to the feel and handling of a conventional mountain bike, but the Trek isn’t one of them. This bike is steam roller, and at its happiest once it’s up to speed barrelling through the rough. In slower situaitons there’s no hiding the weight of the bike, nor the impact of the long stays on its handling. All up, we think this is a bike that’s better suited to taller and stronger riders – in bigger frame sizes, the length of the rear end won’t be so pronounced, as the rear centre measurement will be more in proportion with the overall wheelbase.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

Is it a negative? That depends on your riding style and preference. It’ll barrel over anything you care to point it at, scramble up the most horrendous slopes and its stability is unquestionable. But bunny hopping it, jumping it and generally riding it like your conventional mountain bike isn’t where it shines.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

We preferred it firm.

We spent a fair bit of time tweaking the Powerfly’s suspension, and ultimately settled on a firmer setup, both in terms of air pressure and compression settings. We also ran the rebound speed on the faster side. It was all about keeping the bike riding higher in its travel, which helped restore a bit of liveliness to the ride and improved manoeuvrability. If we went for a softer more forgiving setup we found the ride got a little wallowy.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

So all up?

This is a bike that has some pronounced strong suits; it’s tough as nails, it will leave you laughing as you clean the most absurdly steep climbs, the Bosch motor is excellent, it hammers in a straight line, plus it’s actually pretty good value too. And we’ve read many a review on the net praising this bike for these qualities. But in order to achieve its uphill performance and stability, it handles quite differently to a conventional mountain bike and sacrifices some playfulness, and that won’t appeal to every rider. We’d like to see this bike shortened up a little out back, to help bring it more of the qualities which we admire so much in the Trek Slash, Remedy and Fuel series.

Trek Powerfly 2019 Review – now with a carbon frame and fully-integrated battery

trek powerfly lt 9.9

The Trek Powerfly has become a true eMTB classic and has undergone several updates over the years. To keep up with the competition for the new season Trek equipped the latest version of their popular bike with an integrated battery and also introduced two fine carbon versions of the Powerfly LT. Here you’ll find all the details!

trek powerfly lt 9.9

A few years back Trek did a great job and gave the Powerfly a well thought-out and very well balanced geometry — which once again fully convinced us in our latest test . Sure there are more nimble bikes on the market but the new Powerfly strikes a great balance between uphill and downhill performance. For the new season Trek sticks to the proven geometry and rear-end of the previous version but ads a fully integrated, removable battery. On top of this the new model is available in two carbon versions and the spec has been optimised too. All Plus models are now rolling on sturdy, grippy Bontrager XR4 tires and all Powerfly LT models feature powerful four-piston brakes.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

Here are the highlights of the 2018 Powerfly line up at a glance:

– New fully integrated, removable battery – Two Powerfly LT carbon models – eMTB-specific fork on all Powerfly LT models – Four-piston brakes on all LT models – Bontrager XR4 tires on all Plus models – More colour options – SRAM Eagle groupset on some models – Robust RockShox Revelation on the Powerfly FS7 model – Updated Bontrager Line dropper – Powerfly Sport-Hardtail with lights and mudguards

Trek RIB: probably the best fully-integrated and removable battery on the market

There is a vast choice of eMTBs with integrated battery on the market but only a few systems are thoroughly thought-out and refined down to the last detail. Some bikes come with super long batteries, on others the battery can’t be locked and can only be removed with the help of tools. And then there are systems made up of several parts (battery and cover). A battery can weigh up to 4 kg so when you remove it you have to be really careful not to drop it on the floor and break it.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

You can tell that the engineers at Trek gave the development of the RIB system (removable integrated battery) a lot of thought. The battery and the cover are one solid unit and the 500 Wh Bosch Powertube battery can be removed to the right hand-side. The system makes sense as most of us tend to lay their bike on its left side to avoid damage to the rear derailleur. Once you released the battery with the key it will pop out by a few centimetres; after depressing the big button you can remove the battery completely. An integrated handle makes the whole procedure easier – what an ingenious system! In addition the new integration allows you to place a bottle cage and a large drinking bottle in the main frame triangle.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

The new carbon frame allows for less weight and sleeker integration

trek powerfly lt 9.9

The new carbon frame proves just how much Trek believed in the geometry of the previous Powerfly LT model. The Americans could have revised the geometry for the latest update of the Powerfly but decided to stick to the familiar and very popular concept instead. Therefore the main advantages of the new carbon frame are a weight reduction of around 650 g and the significantly sleeker integration and appearance of the bike. Trek has equipped the top tube with a mounting option for a Wolftooth B-RAD system. The system allows you to quickly attach either an inner-tube or a tool to the bike and forget about carrying uncomfortable backpacks on short rides. In typical Trek style all Powerfly models come with a RE:aktiv rear-shock and ABP-link which keeps the suspension fully active even under braking. The geometry can be adjusted between two positions via a flip chip.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

Revised spec for the Trek Powerfly LT Alu

Even if you won’t buy one of the carbon versions with the Powerfly LT you’ll get quite a few performance upgrades in the coming season. In addition to the battery integration Trek has adapted the spec of the bikes. All Powerfly LT models feature an eBike-specific fork and powerful four-piston brakes. Trek also redesigned the Bontrager Line dropper seat post and used the new SRAM Eagle groupset. Compared to the cheaper Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance tires the new Bontrager XR4 offer noticeably more grip and puncture protection.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

The Trek Powerfly LT 2018 on the Trail

We had the opportunity to test the Powerfly LT 9 at Trek’s launch-event on the gorgeous and varied trails in the Swiss Heidi-Land. Compared to the previous model the handling of the new version has changed very little. The better grip of the new tires might be the most noticeable change on the new version of the Powerfly. Like its predecessor the new Powerfly is a confident climber. The steep seat angle and rather long chainstays will get you at the top of steep climbs without a problem.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

On the downhill the Powerfly feels safe and balanced. It’s not the nimblest bike out there but it’s still very easy to ride. You won’t have to shift your body weight too much to get good grip on both wheels and the bike will always feel pleasantly predictable. But if you’re looking for a very lively super nimble bike the Powerfly might not be able to fully satisfy you. Quick direction changes and narrow sections require a very proactive riding style and quite a lot of strength.

trek powerfly lt 9.9

Our take on the new Trek Powerfly LT

Good stuff made better! Trek didn’t reinvent the wheel but the new Powerfly is a better version of the popular bike with many added improvements. The handling is very similar to the previous version. However you can clearly feel the performance upgrade of the tires. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to ride the new carbon version yet but even just the look of it has already convinced us. We’re not sure whether the carbon upgrade is worth the extra money but since our purchasing decisions are often driven by aesthetics and emotions we think that the new Powerfly Carbon will have certainly find many fans.

Trek Powerfly LT 9.9 vs Specialized Kenevo

I had a demo on the powerfly FS7 the other day and loved it, obviously the 9.9 is going to be better but everyone is telling me to get the Kenevo Expert.... no where to test ride it near me so hoping to get reviews on people who have ridden both motors etc

I love my 2018 Kenevo Expert. I'm sure the Trek rides pretty good, too. But for me it was the geometry and battery integration. It is also a good idea to get the most powerful battery you can. Kenevo has a 504wh battery and the new Levo has a 700wh battery, not sure about the Powerfly. I think your debate should be over the Kenevo and the Decoy, not the Trek. But depends on your style of riding and where you ride. If you ride in a mountainous region I would go for the Kenevo or the YT Decoy but if your area is a little flatter I'd likely go with a Levo or possibly the Trek. The Kenevo and the Decoy are pretty serious downhill machines. The Levo, although capable, isn't quite as aggressively setup as the Kenevo. I have had no problems with the motor, yet. It is pretty smooth and fairly quiet. 2018 Kenevo Expert.

Despite geometry, suspension, dealer network/availability, components and stuff one of the reasons for my Kenevo was the Brose motor, the ultra small remote, the app support and connectivity and the many different settings you can configure at your will without needing a big bulky display on the bike. It gives the most natural feeling of riding a bike of all ebikes around, it's stealthy, no display on the bars unless you add one (i use it with a garmin fenix watch and it works great). I can really geek out over the settings if i want, but don't have to when i just wanna have fun on the bike. The Bosch system is different - ECO mode always kicks in with 50% motor power assist and feels very "on/off" compared to Brose and Shimano. Also the Bosch motor doesn't decouple that good when riding over 25km/h and you will definitely feel "the wall" when you hit that spot. (I do have the Kenevo Expert, my wife rides a Mondraker with Bosch) I'm not saying the Bosch system is bad, but it's just not made for me. It's fine if you don't care about the "on/off" feel and don't care about configuration stuff and connectivity - my wife loves it.

I tend to like/dislike different bikes in their different characteristics, pros and cons. I´ve tested the Spz expert Levo with high expectations due to everything that it´s published and for sure it has lots of merits, but also some nigles . For average riders like me maybe can´t absorve the complete potencial of every bike (and maybe also the cons). About motors I like for ex the bosch emtb mode, and also the characteristics off the brose and the smothness off the shimano. So , again different characteristics. Price is also a important part in the pros and cons part. So good advise is to test ride bikes for yourself .

Doomanic said: Not quite. Bosch and Spesh report assistance differently. Bosch Eco mode is 50% assist , not power, so for every watt the rider generates the motor generated 0.5W. I have a Powerfly and it’s great. I’ve ridden a Shimano motored bike and several Brose motored bikes and guess what? They were great too. I haven’t ridden a Kenevo, but have a few friends with them. They think they’re great. Having said that, the Bosch is almost certainly going to be replaced this year so I’d be hesitant to buy anything with a Bosch motor in it at this point. Click to expand...

thanks for all the replies... the Decoy and the Levo is not an option for me basically my friend owns a bike shop and I can get Trek and Specialised cheap which rules out the Decoy and with the Levo I am not wanting another bike with 29 wheels I have a 2019 specialised enduro and do not really bond with it! I had a quick go of someones levo the other day and it did feel really smooth but not as powerful as the bosch motor but I did notice the 'the wall' of the bosch once it cut out but I could live with that, especially with the way it climbs For me the Trek seems a better deal as it has a carbon frame and wheels, fox factory suspension and a better drive chain. The only thing that puts me off it is the lack of reviews online as most people have the Kenevo which makes me think is it the price difference (Kenevo £5,500 and the LT 9.9 £7,250) or is the Kenevo the better bike?! I love the look of the Kenevo but for me it feels a little dated with the battery indicator being on the side and running the 1.3 motor while the new levees are running the 2.1 motor. Whats the Kenevo like with the climbs? Does the front wheel want to keep popping up? Really I need to find somewhere that has a Kenevo to test ride as i've only got to sit on one in a shop and for a M frame it felt massive especially compared to my M enduro. I am basically looking for a bike that climbs well but can throw it about on the descends!

I'll have a watch of that later and tell you how it compares to my long term test of an LT.

Personally I am really excited to see what Bosch come out with new motor wise, mainly because I think that their EMTB mode is the best of any of the current software modes offered on any bike, but the current motor and ancillaries such as remotes are now long in the tooth, but the software shows what they can do. They have more experience than anyone else in the field so hoping to see something special.

I hope they come up with something more suited to MTBing than the Kiox.

I agree - I mean if I was designing a new motor it’s pretty easy to see what works and what doesn’t right now E.g a couple off top of my head. Small mode controller like the Specialized or Shimano E7000 Optional display/ multiple display options so user can decide if they want one or not Easy to use app with customisation of power levels and user downloadable system updates. 700wh ? They only need to look at the competition

Fully decouple when not assisting.

Me and my friend have had a series of bikes since September last year, which include, the 2019 LT7, LT9, LT9.9, 2019 Levo Carbon expert, 2019 Levo FSR, keveno Expert and 2019 Powerplay Carbon 70. The bosch motor is more powerful than the Brose in the Kenevo ( the 1.3 motor) but not quite as good low down as the Levo motor ( 2.1 brose). However in a drag race the Bosch and 2.1 Brose are the same, its more down to the riders legs. We currently have the LT7, the 2 Levos and the RM left between us. The Trek is similar to the Kenevo at descending, though not as good. The Trek is really good at climbs. The Kenevo is a bargain as they can be had in the 4k bracket. The RM eats them all for sheer power though and is very lively/fun to ride. Ive put 1300 miles on the LT7 and its been great. If you want a trek get the LT9 as its very similar in spec to the 9.9 and is worth the extra money over the 7. But really it comes down to how you want to ride and where you ride, plus what bike fits you best. Weve found the Kenevo to eat the most battery compared to the other bikes. The Levo 500watt is pretty much the same as the bosch 500watt from what weve seen on identical rides.

And what decision Topcat?

  • Jun 20, 2019

I have a Kenevo Comp and my son has a Trek Powerfly LT7. They are both great but they are different. Both have plenty of power, the Trek feels like the power is an instant hit whereas the Specialized feels like it's gradually building up. Being able to re-tune the Specialized via the Mission Control app is useful if you want to reduce the power being provided in order to better manage the battery over a longer distance. The Trek EMTB mode is good but I've found a similar (but not exactly the same) thing can be acheived on the Specialized by playing with the assist/motor power settings. Overall peak power and battery range are very similar. I've found the Kenevo has made a great all rounder but it excels on rough downhill and helps build rider confidence on steep/technical downs. It also climbs fine but on very very steep ascents that you couldn't do on an analogue bike the front does lift a bit more easily than the Trek. I think this is down the Trek lower front end and longer chain stays. I would also say that the Trek has a slight edge when it comes to cornering on single track - it just seems to go where you want with more accuracy. I would put this down to a combination of the less relaxed geometry and less suspension travel. The Kenevo needs more rider input to get it to go where you want. Reliability... The Specialized has destroyed chains faster (cheap EMC chain fitted as standard), had a rear wheel bearing replaced, had a battery replacement (wouldn't charge) and currently has a warranty claim for play in bottom bracket (which being integral to the sealed motor - means new motor) - it has cover 1000 miles over 6 months. I have met several Specialized owners on the local trails (Both Kenevo & Levo) and everyone of them has had battery or motor or both replaced under warranty. The sealed motor with integral bottom bracket seems like a bad idea if the seals aren't good enough to keep out the elements. This particular problem has been mentioned by others on these forums. Up until a week ago I would have said that the Trek has also been more reliable but this is no longer the case. My sons battery lock mounting came loose and it turns out the mounting bolts had been pulled through the frame downtube. Initially Trek offered a 'fix' involving the installation of plates inside and outside the frame tube to secure the battery mount. The external plate is about 2" square and is coloured black (frame is grey). Not something you want on your £4.5K bike. So they are now doing a frame replacement. I'm no sure if the new frame will be different or will still include this design flaw. Sorry for the negative rant but that is my experience. I have bought another analogue bike to keep riding whilst my bike is awaiting it's latest warranty approval/repair - estimated time 1 month! Like I said though - both great bikes when working - a bit like Italian sports cars in that respect!

Interesting what you say about the LT7 and the battery mounting. A few months ago my battery started to rattle and actually jumped out at one point. I initially thought it was the lock at the top, but it turned out to be the T10/15 ( cant remember which) anti tamper screws had started to loosen down at the bottom of the frame. A quick tighten up of these and its been all good so far. Recently me and a few friends did the EMBN 5500ft route in the lakes. 2 of them were on Kenevos. They Eco'ed and rode with them off as much as possible, where-as I had a spare battery so just EMTB'ed everywhere. When we stopped for food near the end I had pretty much the same battery life left as them( ~30%), but I hadn't been saving any ( Had a spare in my bag). So like for like they did seem to be juicer ( both are 2019 Kenevo Experts) than my LT7.

Yeah, we all rode together, but they were off and eco mostly I was emtb and turbo mostly. If they have trailed and turboed the same as me they wouldn't have made the pub/charging station.Fitness level is about the same, one rider was lighter than me and the other slightly heavier, but i had a heavy backpack with extra battery, food water etc. Weve just found them to be noticeably juicier than both the Treks with the 500 battery and our 2019 Levos with the 500 battery. Do you have any pictures on where it failed as it would be good to see.
