What Our Guests Have To Say About This Tour

Outstanding trip, a trip of a lifetime, not a better a way, more than a hiking outfitter, one of our favorite trips, write a review, itinerary & accommodations.

Split; transfer to Hvar

  • Activity Overview: Walking
  • Activity Level: Easy
  • Activity Length: 2 hours

The first day of our tour begins with a walk through the bustling city of Split, one of the Adriatic's most vibrant ports of call. Through the centuries, it has changed hands between Greeks and Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Austrians (among others), but perhaps the city's greatest claim to fame is its enormous, 3rd-century Palace of Diocletian. Created as the Roman emperor's retirement home, the structure is an important example of transitional style, comprising an imperial villa, Hellenistic town, and Roman camp.

Lunch today is an introduction to Mediterranean cuisine; with a wide variety of local cheeses, prosciutto, pogaca, local flatbread reminiscent of Focaccia, and a selection of extra virgin olive oil.

This afternoon, we board a ferry to the island of Hvar and enjoy a panoramic ride overlooking the blue Mediterranean. We end the day at our boutique hotel, offering panoramic views of the town and the marina. Our day concludes with a welcome dinner at a beautiful local restaurant.

Accommodations

Riva Marina

Riva Marina Hvar, Croatia

Hotel Riva Hvar is one of the finest boutique sea-side hotels on Adriatic coast. This recently renovated four-star hotel is situated in the center of UNESCO Hvar Old Town. With 50 elegant and tastefully designed rooms this boutique property pays respect to its original Mediterranean style villa architecture.

Pakleni Islands, or Velo Grablje to Malo Grablje

  • Activity Overview: Sea kayaking or hiking, and walking
  • Activity Level: Easy to moderate
  • Activity Length: 2-3 hours kayaking, or 2-hour hike

This morning, we take to the Adriatic for an optional sea kayaking excursion to the Pakleni Islands, an emerald archipelago just a short distance from the town of Hvar. Here, white-pebble beaches and secluded coves are dotted with Aleppo pines, once an important source of resin used for centuries as a protective coating for the islands' sea-faring galleys.

For those who prefer to explore inland, a hike will be offered from the hamlet of Velo Grablje to Malo Grablje, an abandoned stone village that preserves important examples of Croatian architecture dating from the 9th through the 12th centuries.

Later today, we return to Hvar for a stroll inside the city's 13th-century walls to its sprawling central square, Trg Svetog Stjepana. Here we enjoy a talk with the island's foremost aromatherapist.

As the day wanes, you may choose to visit many of the little artisan shops in town, or make the climb up to Fortress Španjol, a medieval citadel built to defend the city against the Turks. Here the views of Hvar's Old Town and sunset are unparalleled.

Brac Island

  • Activity Overview: Hiking
  • Activity Length: Approximately 3 hours, 2.5 miles

Today we cruise to Brac island, the largest island in Central Dalmatia and third largest in the Adriatic. The picturesque island, dotted with old olive trees and vineyards, is best known for its white stone. Quarries on the island have been a source of white marble since the Roman times and have been used in the construction of Diocletian Palace in Split, and some also say, the White House.

Our private boat will take us to a secluded bay on the south side of Brac Island from where we begin our hike. We walk inland to the Blaca Monastery, an old hermitage of the priests of the Glagolitic Order, and one of the biggest highlights of the island. After a guided tour of this impressive structure in the middle of the forest, we drive to Gazul, an abandoned shepherd's village, where we can try a traditional dish called peka at our friend's tavern.

After lunch, we take in the best view of the Adriatic, since Brac holds the title of the highest peak of any island, followed by a wine tasting in the trendy town of Bol.

We return to the island of Hvar this evening for dinner on your own.

Korcula Island

  • Activity Length: Morning: 1.5 hours, approximately 2.5 miles; Afternoon city walk: 1-2 hours

We start our day with a 1-hour ferry ride to Vela Luka on Korcula Island, known for its pristine beaches, a high-quality white wine variety (locally known as Grk), and most extraordinary of all, as the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo.

Once at Vela Luka, we hike up to Vela Spilja, a magical cave formation situated just above the town. We explore the cave's fascinating archeological sites, including traces of Neanderthal life which have been found here. Our appetite for lunch will be satisfied at Konoba Mate in Pupnat, a small village at the center of the island. This rustic restaurant is the perfect location for us to enjoy some delicious local food.

We finish our day with a walking tour of the town, where we wander through Korcula's old city walls, streets, and buildings. We visit ancient sites such as the St. Mark's Cathedral and the Marco Polo Museum.

From Korcula, we ferry to Orebic, a charming resort town where we check in at the beach-front, Hotel Indijan.

Hotel Indijan

Hotel Indijan Orebic, Croatia

A contemporary feel pervades this well-designed hotel. Rooms are modern and well equipped, and some have balconies with views over the Adriatic to Korcula. The small circular heated pool has a retractable glass roof, so it’s usable all year round. Hotel Indijan also features a bar, an expanive terrace, a private beach just steps from your room, and a restaurant serving delicious food and local Dingac wine.

Peljesac Peninsula, Ston & Tivat

  • Activity Length: Morning: 2 hours, approximately 3 miles; Afternoon: 1 hour, approximately 1 mile Mt. Ilija hike: 2 hours, 2.8 mi, +/- 500’; Ston Walls hike: 45 minutes, 1.1 mi, +/- 530’

We start another adventure-filled day, with a hike on the Peljesac Peninsula. Under breathtaking views of Mt. Ilija and the archipelago, we pass by the Franciscan monastery and the votive Gothic-Renaissance church of Our Lady of the Angels in Orebic, two iconic landmarks of this region.

Next, we make our way to the picturesque town of Ston, where we enjoy a traditional Dalmatian lunch, perhaps savoring the taste of fresh oysters, before walking along the walls surrounding the town. These walls, considered to be some of the longest defensive walls in Europe, connect the towns of Ston and Mali Ston while providing stunning views of the surrounding area.

This afternoon, we embark on a scenic coastal drive to Tivat in Montenegro, with panoramic views of the beautiful coastline. As we near Tivat, we see the magnificent entrance to the Bay of Kotor, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique blend of both natural and cultural elements.

This evening is yours to explore one of the many fine restaurants in town. Your guide will be happy to make recommendations.

Regent Porto Montenegro

Come here for open-air gourmet dining, an indulgent spa, outdoor pools, and impeccable service.

Kotor Bay & Perast

  • Activity Length: Approximately 3 hours, 3 miles

After a delicious breakfast, we gather in the lobby of our hotel in Tivat, ready to embark on an exciting tour around the bay of Kotor, revealing some of the most breathtaking scenery of the entire Western Balkans' coastline.

Our first stop is the old town of Kotor, where we explore the historic architecture, winding alleyways and charming squares that give the town its unique character. We learn about the rich history of the town, which has been shaped by centuries of influences from various cultures and religions. Our local guide tells us about the cultural and gastronomic elements, such as the famous smoked ham and delicious seafood dishes that the region is known for.

After exploring the old town, we make our way up along the walls above town. The views are breathtaking, with panoramic vistas over the bay and the surrounding mountains. As we hike along the steps and trails, we feel invigorated and inspired by the beauty that surrounds us.

Once back in town, we are greeted by our skipper Zdravko, who takes us on a private boat ride to the picturesque coastal town of Perast. We relax and enjoy the stunning views of the bay as we zip across the water, and Zdravko regales us with tales of local legends and historical events that have shaped the region. On the boat, we enjoy a delicious fish picnic prepared by our skilled chef, who uses local ingredients and traditional recipes to create a mouth-watering feast. We sip on local wines and beers, enjoying the delicious food and convivial atmosphere as we soak in the sun and the sea.

We disembark in Verige, where we say goodbye to Zdravko and the crew, and return to our hotel in Tivat for some down time before dinner. We end our day at dinner overlooking the Adriatic Sea, reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had exploring the hidden treasures of Kotor Bay.

  • Activity Length: Morning: 2 hours, 3 miles; City tour: Approximately 2 hours

Saying goodbye to Tivat and Montenegro, we start our day with a hike up Mt. Srd, which overlooks the beautiful city of Dubrovnik. Once we reach the summit, we take a moment to breathe in the fresh mountain air and take in the stunning panoramic views. As we descend the mountain, the view of the old city, with the Adriatic Sea as a backdrop, becomes more and more breathtaking. Once in Dubrovnik we check into our hotel for some downtime, to relax and prepare for the second half of the day.

Eager to explore this historical city and its ancient landmarks, we venture out for a city tour around Dubrovnik old town. The city's fascinating history comes alive as we walk through the ancient streets and observe the magnificent architecture and the ancient walls, which are even more stunning in person than in photographs.

As we walk, the aroma of fresh seafood and the sound of traditional music fill the air. We settle in at a famous local restaurant in the old city center to savor the local gastronomy and enjoy the lively atmosphere, for our farewell dinner. The ambiance is perfect for taking in the spirit of the city over a delicious Mediterranean meal, raising our glasses with our guides one last time to toast to our unforgettable journey through Croatia and Montenegro.

Late spring to early summer and late summer to early fall tend to be the best times to visit Croatia, avoiding both the hottest months and peak tourist season of mid-summer. Mountainous areas can be cool, especially in the evening. A swim in the sea is possible from April to October, with water temperatures increasing throughout the summer months.

Montenegro and Croatia both offer a rich and diverse cuisine influenced by their geographical location, history, and cultural heritage. While there are similarities between their culinary traditions, each country also has its unique dishes and flavors.

Montenegrin cuisine is known for its hearty and flavorful dishes, often featuring a combination of Mediterranean and Balkan influences. Some typical ingredients include fish, seafood, meat, vegetables, cheese, and various herbs.

Croatian cuisine also showcases a mix of Mediterranean and Central European influences, resulting in a diverse range of flavors and specialties. Croatia's coastline and islands offer an abundance of seafood, while the northern regions are known for their hearty meat dishes and freshwater fish.

Both Montenegro and Croatia take pride in their wine-making traditions, so you'll find a range of local wines to complement your meals. Additionally, Mediterranean staples like olive oil, cheese, and fresh vegetables play a significant role in the culinary traditions of both countries.

6. Adriatic Paradise Cruise by Adriatic Princess

7 Best Small Group Tours to Croatia and Montenegro

RATING: 4.3 / 5 ( 7 reviews ) | TOUR LENGTH: 8 days | BOOK NOW

If you’ve been dreaming of sailing the Croatian islands, this could be your dream trip!

This cruise takes just 38 guests, so no huge cruise ship, and it takes you to the most spectacular places along the Croatian coastline. On this tour you’ll see Croatia’s famous spots, including Venetian stronghold Korčula, Roman-founded Split and must-see Dubrovnik.

The cruise, run by Croatia tour experts Elite Travel , includes optional excursions in each destination so you can make this trip as active or as laid-back as you like. There are lots of swimming stops included and you can choose to join the optional guided tours or explore each destination on your own.

Although it barely qualifies as a Croatia and Montenegro tour, since the only time in Montenegro is a day excursion to Kotor that’s only available on select dates, I’ve still included it on this list because it’s a great tour.

7. DIY Small Group Tour to Croatia and Montenegro

7 Best Small Group Tours to Croatia and Montenegro

Not found the perfect tour yet?

Many of these tours only visit Kotor in Montenegro and spend most of the time in Croatia, so you’d be forgiven for wanting something that explores Montenegro more in depth. After all, Montenegro and its inland areas are incredibly beautiful and worth visiting!

One of the best ways to get a small group tour to Croatia and Montenegro that covers everything is to book two tours - one to Croatia and one to Montenegro - one after the other. Many of the most popular tours run weekly, so you can book two tours, one in each country.

I recommend booking a Croatia tour that ends in Dubrovnik and catching a bus or taxi into Montenegro to start a tour there. Alternatively, you could book a Montenegro tour first and then a Croatia tour that starts in Dubrovnik.

Here are some great tours that you can combine to make one fantastic trip:

  • Croatia Countryside and Island Hopping
  • Highlights of Croatia
  • Croatia Sailing Adventure: Split to Dubrovnik
  • Croatia Sailing Adventure: Dubrovnik to Split
  • Explore Croatia

Frequently asked questions, why us why should i book with aperture journeys.

We are passionate about travel and believe a meaningful life must include rich memories, and travel to new places while experiencing  different cultures and people is key in achieving this. We are firm believers in the idea that great things happen when we step outside our comfort zone.  In 30 years of traveling and a long list of great experiences and memories I can honestly say this is true.

When developing our tours we spend alot of time with “boots on the ground” at the locations.  We are vetting our suppliers, evaluating risk, looking for new and interesting places to see, building experiences that will make great memories. We look back on 30 years of world travel and understand what makes a great travel experience.  We are a small business and are doing what we love and want to share the experience with others. Our groups are small 6- 10 persons which makes for a better touring experience.

Our philosophy on hotels is to book 4 & 5 star hotels and when possible choose hotels that are centrally located to allow a short walk to tourist ares with shopping and restaurants.  This way you can enjoy your free time easily.  There are times when 4 or 5 star is not available so we have to choose wisely in this case.

We love to try the local cuisine, wines and liqueurs that is why most of your meals are included. We think it is great to explore local restaurants and order from the menu and try to do this as much as possible.  We do not prefer to have “Half Board” meals at the hotel, however at times it makes sense, but we try our best to kept HB meals to a minimum.

Entry Requirements What are the entry requirements for these countries?

This tour visits Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Croatia. In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.

We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps. There is no visa required for U.S. or Canadian citizens.

If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

For the most up-to-date entry requirements for these destinations visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/COVID-19-Country-Specific-Information.html

Transportation What type of transportation will we use?

Our groups are small so we use smaller coaches usually about 15 pax capacity.  They are able to travel down narrow roads providing better access.

Due to their size there are no toilets onboard these types of coaches however we make regular stops to ensure your comfort along the way . Often, we’ll break up a long transfer with an included walking tour in a location of interest en route to our destination, so you’ll have ample time to stretch your legs as well.

Occasionally we travel on private boats or ferry boats to reach our destination.  These can vary in size from 20 passenger private vessels to large ferry boats capable of hundreds of passengers.

Physical requirements How strenuous are the activities?

You will need physical stamina to participate unassisted in touring activities for 6 to 8 hours with walking distances of 3 to 5 miles. Up to 15000 steps or more. Of course we will take frequents breaks to enjoy the food and drink.

You will walk for at least 2 hours daily and up to 5 hrs on terrain of various types like cobble stone streets, uneven surfaces, forest/lake trails and at times some steep inclines.

You will need physical ability to handle your luggage getting into your hotel room, entering and exiting boats and boarding aircraft using stairs when a jetway in not available, which is common in these countries.

Luggage How much luggae can I bring?

You must be able to comfortably handle all your luggage by yourself at all times. Therefore, we strongly urge you to limit your luggage to one piece of luggage(of a size you can comfortably handle), a hand carry bag and a personal item.  Luggage the size of airline carry-on dimensions is strongly suggested as there may be times requiring you to carry your bag up stairs onto airplanes, etc.   Your luggage will need to fit in a taxi for short transfers.

Airports Are the arriving and departing airports service by major airlines?

Yes! As of this writing,  Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) (our arrival and departure airport) connects to many large European cities by these major airlines and their US partners: British Airways (OneWorld – American Airlines); Austrian, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines (Star Alliance – United Airlines).

Photo / Video What is photo / video instruction?

Photo & Video instruction is short lessons provided by us to you throughout the tour to help you improve your photography and videography skills.  They may include lessons on Composition, Lighting, or posing for example.

Shopping Will there be time for shopping?

Yes! We carefully plan our tours to assure that the pace isn’t too busy or too idle. You’ll have free time to shop or to simply relax in the lovely surroundings. Remember to leave space in your suitcase. If you want to bring back some wine remember to bring one of those plastic wine travel pouches.

Great trip to see the Balkans!

We booked a 2 week private tour to visit 7 countries in the Balkans and our experience was great! The guide were very knowledgeable and especially Adnan and Senad who accompanied us for most of the tour did a great job! Ema was ver helpful while planing the trip and we had a great time!

My small group of 3 used Funky Tours for ~10-12 days for a trip through the Balkans. We did a combination of 1/2 day tours and connecting tours that included Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Serbia and Kosovo. Our group was myself and 2 18y/o’s celebrating their high school graduation. We had an amazing time thanks to Funky Tours. We interacted with many of Funky Tours staff, Skender (even his parents), Ema (who did such a great job at answering all my emails and helping to arrange the perfect tour for us), multiple different guides (who were all very professional and knowledgeable.) We spent the most time with Jasmin and Enis.

The girls were suitably impressed by Jasmin’s excellent driving skills and ability to parallel park a van in a small space. Enis was always up to answering our questions, occasionally using his excellent photography skills to help me take pictures of the girls (we took graduation photos at most of our stops) and a pleasure to have as a guide.

I highly recommend Funky Tours and will use them again if

I am in the Balkan region again.

Holiday of a lifetime – can’t recommend funky tours enough!

I can’t put into words how much I enjoyed our trip with Funky Tours and I can’t recommend them enough!

My husband and I did a two-week four country trip through Croatia/Bosnia and Hercegovina/Montenegro and Albania and had a ball.

Anand and Senad were THE best guide and driver and it felt like taking a trip with friends. They couldn’t do enough for us and were knowledgable and engaging giving a personal perspective about a multi-layered part of the world. Ema, Edna and Nadirah in the office couldn’t be more helpful, checking in to see if we were OK or wanted anything changing.

Where necessary local guides were used who were all engaging, informative and critically had lived through history and events they were speaking about.

We tweaked the itinerary as we went along to make sure it suited us perfectly and the flexibility and amount of things to see and do meant we felt Funky Tours gave us a holiday of a lifetime!

Fantastic Balkan 10 days with Sarajevo Funky Tour

Ema organized my trip B&H, Montenegro, Albania in November 2020. Her communication was timely. What I like most about Ema and her team is they addressed my concerns about traveling during the pandemic. They took care all the PCR test to ensure smooth border crossing. We all wore masks and tested negative before starting our car journey together. I want to thank to Taib (guide) for making my trip magical and memorable. Taib is knowledgeable, good communication skills, detail oriented.

I am glad I made the choice to go with Sarajevo Funky Tour.

Best Agency to Experience the Balkan Region!

Sarajevo Funky Tours is hands down the best travel agency I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From the initial booking inquiry months in advance to the ride to the airport on my last day, everyone that I met with the Sarajevo Funky Tours team was delightful to be around. What sets this agency apart from the others is that their guides and staff know what it means to balance professionalism and building friendships with their guests. For the 8 days I spent touring with Funky Tours, all of the guides, drivers, and staff went above and beyond to check in with how I was doing throughout my stay — and as a solo female traveler in a brand new county, that meant the world to me. I will always recommend this agency because of the time, effort, and care they put into breaking down prejudice — and cannot wait to explore more of the Balkan Region with their team the next time I visit! Puno Ljubavi!

How to plan the ultimate Adriatic coastal adventure in Montenegro's Bay of Kotor

Tucked along the Adriatic coast, this bay showcases Montenegro at its most idyllic, with buzzy towns, one-of-a-kind culinary experiences and mountainous national parks on its doorstep.

Stone houses with red roofs positioned on the waterfront of turquoise sea

Over the past decade, Montenegro has quietly cultivated a reputation as one of southeastern Europe’s most eclectic travel destinations. Though smaller than many of its Balkan neighbours, its alpine interior has much to offer the adventurous traveller, from white-water rafting in dramatic gorges to skiing and snowboarding in winter.

However, it’s on the coast that the country shines brightest. Ringed by the Dinaric Alps and encompassing the municipalities of Kotor, Herceg Novi and Tivat, the Bay of Kotor — or Boka Bay as it’s known locally — is an undulating succession of cerulean coves, pebble beaches and UNESCO-listed medieval towns. all of which sit beneath Mount Lovćen, the ‘black mountain’ that gives Montenegro its name.

Montenegrins may pride themselves on their chilled-out demeanour but, in warmer months, Boka Bay’s pedestrianised urban centres throng with locals flitting between wine bars — live jazz flooding onto town squares where cats laze contentedly. Its religious art and medieval architecture now sit alongside increasingly creative culinary experiences, not   to mention a growing infrastructure for active exploration. And, with new flight routes from the UK to Tivat Airport making the region more accessible than ever, popular bases such as Kotor are primed for short breaks.

Day 1: Medieval towns and mountain hikes

Tourists at the viewpoint of a rocky mountain summit

Morning Start with a hike along Kotor’s fortified city walls, which date back to the 9th century and snake up to the San Giovanni fortress. It’s a steep climb, but worth it for the epic views over the bay. On the way down, stop by the Church of our Lady of Remedy, completed in 1518 and said to grant good health to those that visit for a prayer. Cool off with baked peach and vanilla ice cream from stone-fronted Moritz Eis before exploring the Old Town’s Venetian-style squares and alleyways, which are full of cafes, wine shops and trinket-laden boutiques. Don’t miss St Luke’s Church — which has a combination of Catholic and Orthodox altars — or St Tryphon’s Cathedral, a shimmering basilica dedicated to the town’s protective saint.

Afternoon It’s a short drive from the Old Town to Kotor Cable Car , which climbs some 4,300ft to the rocky heights of Lovćen National Park. Prior to the lift’s opening in 2023, the only way to reach the 24sq-mile park was via the tight hairpin turns of ‘Serpentine Road’. Many still ascend this way, watching the views slowly unfold. High-octane adventures await those who make it to the top — from an alpine rollercoaster to gruelling hiking routes. But the mountain’s crowning jewel is its mausoleum, said to be the highest in the world. Whipped by cold winds 5,500ft above Boka Bay, it’s the resting place of 19th-century prince-bishop Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. On a clear day, the view stretches all the way to Albania.

Evening At sunset, drive eight miles west to Perast, a waterfront town bursting with baroque palaces, and catch the five-minute ferry to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks. It’s said that in 1452 an icon of the Madonna was found here, caught on a jutting crag. Passing sailors went on to lay stones on the site, forming a man-made island upon which a Byzantine-style church was built in the 17th century. Inside, the walls are lined with silver pieces bearing maritime motifs —   gifts made by seamen to thank the Virgin Mary for their safe passage. Not all could offer silver; the church museum displays five centuries’ worth of offerings, from anchors to photographs. Back in Perast, take an ocean-side table at Riva to enjoy seafood caught from the bay.

Motorbike on a waterfront boulevard lined with white buildings

Day 2: Farms and feasts

Morning As the sun begins to creep over the peaks, make for the sanctuary of Gornja Lastva . This small settlement on the slopes of Vrmac mountain, just above Tivat, is home to just one full-time resident. Narrow streets lined with traditional stone houses and overgrown pomegranate trees lead to the heart of the village. It’s here you’ll find the Church of Saint Maria. Built in 1410, this Roman Catholic church features original Orthodox frescoes, evidence of the region’s diverse religious heritage. Book a tour of 19th-century Gornja Lastva Olive Mill for insight into the processes behind one of the area’s most coveted products. After hearing how it was used to press olives into oil, stop for a mid-morning snack of priganice, a deep-fried doughball served with honey and best enjoyed with a warming shot of Montenegrin rakija, a type of brandy.

Afternoon A 20-mile drive along coastal roads brings you to the Luštica Peninsula. The last headland before the Adriatic, the area is home to a wealth of fortresses. Take Mamula Island , an isolated 19th-century fort reimagined as a 32-room luxury hotel. Opened in 2023 — and open to day visitors — it has three restaurants and a secluded pool deck. Alternatively, get a bird’s-eye view of the island from the terrace of Herceg Novi Pony Art Garden, a family-run farmstead in the Luštica hills. Hosts Žizela Marković and Nenad Obradović serve up course after course of Montenegrin specialities, from slow-roasted red pepper dips to meaty black squid risotto, all washed down with local wines and traditional fruit brandies. Before you leave, be sure to feed the ponies and donkeys that live in the backyard.

Evening Lean into the luxury side of Boka Bay at Porto Montenegro . This modern marina has become a magnet for the superyacht set, thanks to its high-end restaurants, bars and fashion boutiques. Take a sunset walk along the palm-lined promenade to nosey at the ships before swinging by Buddha-Bar Beach for pre-dinner cocktails soundtracked by a chilled-out DJ set. For dinner, take a ferry across the water to Ćatovića Mlini restaurant. The lush gardens and bubbling fountains of this former mill provide the perfect setting for a seafood tasting menu. Highlights include saffron and shrimp risotto and crispy sea bass in truffle sauce. Opt for the wine pairing, which includes a selection of Montenegrin wines, including a special edition red Vranac from the Plantaže winery in Podgorica.

Three more adventure bases

1. Cetinje Montenegro’s capital until 1946, the southern city of Cetinje lays claim to King Nikola’s Palace, once the seat of the Montenegrin royal family and now a fascinating museum. The exhibits explore the reign of King Nikola I, with a series of perfectly preserved bedrooms and reception areas offering a glimpse into 19th-century royal life. The city is also just a 10-minute drive from Lipa Cave , one of Montenegro’s most spectacular subterranean destinations. Knowledgeable guides lead excursions into the one-and-a-half-mile web of passages, emerging into colossal caverns where huge stalagmites rise from the depths. Wine-tastings and concerts are occasionally held here, too, the latter making use of the unique acoustics.

People on an inflatable yellow boat rafting down a fast flowing river

2. Zabljak This small town in the forested north serves as a gateway to Durmitor National Park, a vast 79,000-acre wilderness home to three canyons, 18 glacial lakes and around 50 peaks over 6,500ft. Durmitor is a top spot for thrill-seekers, with opportunities for climbing, horse-riding, mountain biking and even ice cave visits. When it comes to hiking, beginners can find their feet on the gentle loop around Crno Jezero — named the ‘Black Lake’ due to its ink-blue water — while more serious hikers can test their mettle scrambling up 8,300ft Bobotov Kuk. The views get even better over at Tara River Gorge. One of the deepest canyons in Europe, its dramatic chasms make for exhilarating white-water rafting and kayaking trips.

3. Kolašin Founded by the Ottomans in the 17th century, the former fortress settlement of Kolašin promises high-altitude adrenaline all year round. At the foot of the northerly Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains, there are two winter snowsports centres: Kolašin 1600 and Kolašin 1450, with plenty of gentle runs making the 30-mile shared ski area great for families and beginners. In warmer months, Kolašin’s greatest draw becomes its proximity to Biogradska Gora. Though the smallest of Montenegro’s five national parks, its landscapes are unparalleled. The area’s high levels of rainfall mean that the glacial waters of Lake Biograd are surrounded by virgin temperate rainforest, home to countless bird species and trees up to 500 years old.

Along the way there will be time for a swim stop in a secluded cove. Late morning arrival to Trogir and time on your own. Lunch will be served on board while in port.

After lunch, we will board a bus to take us to the National Park Krka. Krka is one of Croatia’s most famous and picturesque national parks. The waterfalls and crystal clear waters are most impressive making this stop a client favorite. After, we’ll head to a small village to the home of a local prosciutto maker. Day 6 TROGIR – VIS, Monday (B, L)

In the morning we set sail towards the island of Vis. With lunch on board and a swim stop along the way, we arrive in Vis in the early afternoon. Vis was once an important Yugoslav naval base and was closed to the public for years. Due to this isolation, Vis has a unique charm that feels like you’re stepping into a faraway time, making it one of our favorite stops. Here, you will have an optional visit a unique winery with an fascinating story and location. Their wines are top quality and among some of the best in Croatia.

In town, feel free to explore Vis at your leisure. We recommend visiting the Archaeological Museum located in the old Austrian fort Gospina Batarija (Batteria della Madonna). Dinner on your own in one of Vis Town’s charming restaurants.

Overnight in Vis

Optional Wine Tasting Experience

Day 7 VIS – BIŠEVO (Blue Cave) – HVAR, Tuesday (B, L)

Our sail begins early in the morning toward the Blue Cave*. This natural phenomenon is one of the highlights of the entire week and you’ll find out for yourself why! (entrances to be paid on the spot – approx. €18)

After the Blue Cave, breakfast will be served on board. We’ll have a swim stop and continue to Croatia’s sunniest island. Hvar is known as a “yachter’s paradise”. Arrive in the afternoon and explore the town’s historical center which includes the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower, and the oldest community theatre in Europe founded in the 17th century. Hike up to the Spanish Fortress which overlooks the harbor for lovely scenic views of the yacht-filled marina and the Pakleni islands. In the evening, Hvar offers many great restaurants, cafes, and bars with many open late into the night.

Overnight in Hvar

Optional visit to Blue Cave

*Please note that the Blue Cave is only accessible with small boats through an entrance just 1.5m high so it is unfortunately easily made inaccessible by bad weather and high waves.

Day 8 HVAR – KORČULA, Wednesday (B, L)

This morning, we continue to Korčula, stopping for a swim in the gorgeous turquoise water and lunch along the way.

Upon arrival in Korčula, enjoy a guided walking tour and explore the narrow cobblestone streets of this well preserved medieval town that is thought to be the birthplace of the world-famous explorer, Marco Polo. Afterwards, continue discovering all the little nooks and crannies of Korčula, and enjoy dinner in one of the town’s charming local restaurants.

From there, we’ll take a short boat ride to the oyster farm in the middle of the bay to taste these delicacies straight from the sea. Accompanied by a glass of Croatian wine, of course.

Return to Slano for our Captain’s Dinner with live entertainment onboard.

Overnight in Slano

After the guided walking tour of the Old Town, you have the rest of the day to experience Dubrovnik for yourself. When you’ve soaked up all of Dubrovnik’s warm and welcoming atmosphere that you can handle, our ship will be docked at Gruž Harbour. There are plenty of taxis, buses, and Ubers to bring you back.

Day 11 DUBROVNIK – KOTOR (Montenegro), Saturday (B, T)

You’ll say goodbye to your amazing ship crew, and venture southward for yet another adventure – to the bay of Kotor, Montenegro, making a delightful pit stop at the charming family-owned winery, situated atop the picturesque Savina monastery in the town of Herceg Novi. Following our wine-tasting adventure, you’ll spend the night at the hotel in town.

Hotel Forza Mare, Kotor
