Cornell - Johnson

While not an MBA per se, Cornell's Master of Management in Hospitality provides a strategic overview of the business of hospitality. MMH grads tend to be snapped up by a wide range of hospitality companies, including the Hilton Worldwide, Ritz-Carlton, and Korean Air. In recent years, Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration continues to extend its reach, through partnerships with international schools.

NTU - Nanyang

In 2010, Nanyang launched a partnership with Cornell, and through this the school has been growing their hospitality-related MBA elective offerings. The Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management also offers a one-year Master of Management in Hospitality program as well as a shorter Advanced Management Program in Hospitality.

CEIBS - Shanghai

In recent years, CEIBS has been building out its MBA offerings in the hospitality space. The school currently offers an Executive MBA program in Hospitality—the school calls it the “first of its kind in China”—in partnership with the Swiss EHL Hospitality Business School. The program helps prepare students to break into China’s massive and profitable service sector.Although the program is delivered in Chinese, it’s also offered with simultaneous translation in English. 

With its casinos and countless hotels, Las Vegas is perhaps the place to be for those looking to break into the hospitality industry. MBA graduates have landed jobs with a range of hospitality companies, including the Intercontinental Hotels Group and MGM Resorts. Students can choose to pair their MBA with a MS in Hotel Administration from the university’s Harrah College of Hotel Administration.

ESSEC

Even though ESSEC has retired its long-standing MBA in Hospitality Management, the school still offers several other programs for tourism and leisure-oriented students, such as a two-year MSc in Hospitality Management. However, even Hospitality-driven ESSEC MBA graduates have had success in the industry, landing jobs at the Disneyland Resort Paris and in the Four Seasons, among other hospitality companies.

Georgia State - Robinson

MBA grads at GSU – Robinson have landed jobs in tourism-oriented firms like Delta Air Lines and others. Robinson offers a one-year Master’s in Global Hospitality Management through the school’s Day School of Hospitality Administration. In this program, students can delve into an area of hospitality, such as hotel development, artificial intelligence business innovation, and others.

Students interested in hospitality can combine Bauer's MBA with an MS in Hospitality Management from Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College. Recruiters typically include a range of hotels, casinos like Harrah's, and cruise lines such as Holland America.

At George Washington, MBA grads have landed at hospitality and tourism-oriented firms like JetBlue and Interstate Hotels and Resorts. The school also offers a Master of Science in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management (which was formerly known as the Master of Tourism Administration). Networking in the industry is enabled by GW’s International Institute of Tourism Studies, which publishes relevant research and offers a range of professional certificates.

Kyoto University has recently redesigned its MBA, which includes an optional focus on service and hospitality management, big business in Japan. Some of the courses offered focus on the role of AI in hospitality, as well as Japanese business management. Through a partnership with Cornell, the school also offers a joint International Kyoto MBA & Cornell Master in Hospitality Management Dual Degree program.

For those looking to study hospitality off the beaten track, the Croatia-based Zagreb School of Economics and Management offers an MBA in Hospitality, Tourism and Events. The hospitality and tourism industry is flourishing. As a more people travel, whether for work or for pleasure, there is more demand for more highly skilled workers within the hospitality industry. This includes excellent managers who know both the hospitality industry and business principles like the back of their hand. For that reason, many hospitality and tourism professionals are returning to school for a graduate degree, often to move up corporate ladder. For many, a great graduate degree option is a Master’s of Business Administration with a focus in Hospitality Management. And, since many of those returning to school to get their Hospitality MBA’s already work in the industry, many schools have increased the flexibility of their degree programs to include online options that better meet their students’ needs.

For this ranking, we narrowed our focus to online degree programs because many MBA students already work full time in the hospitality industry, as indicated by the design of most of the programs on this list. The results are the culmination of a multi-dimensional metric system, which uses data compiled from individual program sites and national data collection platforms. With that information in hand, we focused on three major objectives. First, we wanted to know whether or not the school’s tuition made it a viable choice for online students and how many students received financial aid. Second, we looked at whether the school offered flexible options to accommodate student needs, like fast-track options or multiple specialities. And finally, we wanted to determine the academic quality of the institutions we sampled. You can find a more thorough explanation of the methodology we used below.

  • Affordability (1/3): 50% out-of-state tuition per credit hour and 50% percentage of students receiving financial aid
  • Flexibility and Accommodation (1/3): 50% time until degree and 50% flexibility-enhancing components
  • Online Academic Quality(1/3): 50% Student-Faculty Ratio and 50% Percentage of Grad Students Studying Primarily or Partially Online

1.) Johnson & Wales University

Johnson & Wales University is a private, nonprofit, career-focused university with campuses across the United States. Originally founded in 1914 as a business school, today JWU grants a full range of degrees. With a little over 16,000 students, JWU also offers a variety of services to ensure students get the most out of their college education. Key to JWU’s educational success is its innovative approaches to combining industry-focused education with work experience and leadership opportunities. That means students leave JWU with a quality education and résumé-ready experiences. One of JWU best known programs that adopts such a model is its culinary program, which was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame in 2012.

JWU’s culinary program and many others trace their roots back to JWU’s founding as a business and hospitality school. Today it has the largest food service education programs in the world. One of JWU’s online degree offerings includes a MBA with a concentration in Hospitality. This online hospitality master’s program is designed with an industry-specific curriculum tailored for students looking to enter hospitality management positions. Students take courses in hospitality and tourism global issues, franchising and licensing, and hospitality event leadership. JWU also offers a lot of flexible options to fit their students’ busy schedules like 11 week courses, hospitality industry leaders as faculty members, and a time-to-degree of only 18 months.

2.) Louisiana State University Shreveport

Louisiana State University is a public, nonprofit university in Baton Rouge. As Tier 1 Research Institute, LSU has been nationally recognized for its extensive research facilities and several of its graduate programs, including its business and education programs, both of which have fully available online degrees. With over 30,000 students, LSU has a lot of resources available to their students including a variety of online programs. LSU Online hosts three programs, the E.J College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the College of Human Sciences & Education. In total, that amounts to 10 certificate and graduate degrees from some of the nation’s top programs.

One of LSU Online’s programs includes a MBA with a concentration in Hospitality and Casino Management. The program is designed specifically for the gaming industry, and for students already employed within the hospitality industry. The curriculum for this concentration includes casino and resort management, hospitality and casino marketing, and quantitative methods, in addition to core business administration courses. Hospitality Management students leave LSU’s program ready for careers as casino managers, business development managers, directors of casinos or hotels, hospitality managers, and other management positions in the hospitality and gaming industry.

Applied Tourism Project

This module is designed to give students the opportunity to apply their learning to a tourism-related project and develop practical skills in project management, research, and problem-solving while working as a team, from the initial stages of project planning to final presentation and evaluation.

The Electives will allow students to specialize in specific areas of interest, to develop advanced skills and knowledge, and thereby to tailor their education to individual career goals and to gain a competitive advantage in the job market. All courses provide hands-on experience and real-world applications, and may include guest lectures, field trips, and industry projects.

Master Thesis

The purpose of the courses is to complete a research project in the form of a Master Thesis on a chosen topic, culminating students’ experiences in the program and validating them as master practitioners. Based upon the thesis proposal and under supervision from faculty, students will complete their thesis writing and orally defend their thesis.

Internship (optional)

Students can attend an optional 20-week internship (also in combination with the master thesis) with a company or organization that is from the tourism industry or involved with tourism activities after the completion of the first 10 modules. If it is a professionally relevant internship and includes a written scientific internship report (15-20 pages), students can obtain 30 extra ECTS credits.

Hospitality and tourism is the number one industry in Florida, and a hotbed in the Tampa Bay area. There is a major demand from industry partners in the St. Petersburg - Clearwater area for a hospitality school where talent can be developed and graduates can work in local businesses.

How you will learn.

The MBA in Tourism Management provides you with flexible learning options that include online study materials and face-to-face-teaching offered in a 3 day block at our stunning Ambleside campus. All modules are delivered by our team of subject experts, all of whom have industry and academic expertise.

This programme integrates theory and practice by providing inputs to the student learning from guest speakers, lectures, practising managers and through supporting assessment.

Students will have opportunities to give and receive peer review on formative assessment and will be guided throughout in developing their skills in this vocational aspect of their personal development.

Primarily, delivery is face to face. However, good use is made of the University’s VLE and other learning resources such as e-portfolio to support teaching and learning. Our academic team uses a wide range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops, field work, work-based learning including placements, employer based case studies, live projects, guided learning, simulations, discussion groups including virtual forums and other digital formats.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed on your achievement of the programme learning outcomes, which, in turn, are achieved by meeting the learning outcomes of the modules.

The assessment of the programme learning outcomes will therefore be achieved by assessment at the module level. Selection of the methods for assessment will be determined by the requirements of each individual module and the rationale for selection of those methods will be left to the module specifications.

A key aspect of the programme is that you are able to convert your learning by critically reflecting on practice and experience, in line with the QAA benchmark statements.

This is achieved through both formative and summative reflection throughout the programme. You are expected to be able to demonstrate a range of cognitive and intellectual skills together with techniques specific to business management. You should also be able to demonstrate relevant personal and interpersonal skills. A variety of assessment methods are used to ensure you have achieved the outcomes related to knowledge and understanding, including:

  • Case Studies
  • Presentations (Oral and Posters)
  • Assignments
  • Dissertation

The minimum entry requirement is a 2:2 honours degree, or an equivalent international qualification.

Applicants will ideally have at least 2 years’ work experience, although highly motivated candidates who can show that they would benefit from the programme, and have the commitment to complete it successfully, will be considered.

Applications without standard qualifications must demonstrate:

  • the capacity for theoretical debate
  • a high level of motivation
  • the capacity for independent study
  • the ability to achieve the proposed programme of work
  • students for whom English is not their first language must have achieved IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum 6 in each component)

Additional Costs

There will be some additional costs. For example all students will need to purchase stationery and may wish to purchase some text books. Books are reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change, course welcome information will provide you with an indicative list for the year.

Books and Journals

Most core text books are available via the University's library, however students may wish to buy copies of any texts used to support your learning on your course. This could cost between £50 - £100 per year.

Students should budget for stationery and consumables for your own personal use. This should include notebooks, pens and pencils for taking notes in class and/or in the field. Students should also budget for the purchase of USB pen drives, as well as occasional printing and photocopying costs incurred in the preparation or submission of coursework. Whilst you will choose how much you need, expect to pay around £30 - £40 per year for these items.

The first year of infusing IBM certifications into the MBA curriculum has been very successful. Enterprise Design Thinking was a new course introduced into the MBA core and students have positive feedback on the course and the industry skillsets and earned digital badge. Enterprise Design Thinking is an organizational approach towards innovation, problem solving, teamwork and decision that leverages collaboration, organizational learning, and team knowledge and insights.

Design Thinking has been praised by Forbes, Harvard Business Review and MIT’s Sloan School as an important tool for innovation across industries. Currently, Joseph Gilkey Jr., Ph.D. and Gulhan Bizel, Ph.D., are the 2 faculty members certified by IBM to teach the course, which leads to an IBM certification and badge. Located directly behind Arthur S. DeMoss Hall, the Montview Student Union is a 4-story, 168,000-square-foot structure that includes a lounge overlooking the Academic Commons, retail dining venues, an art gallery, a ballroom, and a bowling alley. The building also has space for academics, meetings, and offices.

The Liberty Baseball Stadium features the latest turf playing surface, as well as full-length, major league-style dugouts, a fully-equipped media area, two suites, a club room, and a spectator picnic area.

The Center for Medical and Health Sciences (CMHS) is a state-of-the-art modern learning facility for Liberty University's College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) and School of Health Sciences. Sitting on Liberty Mountain, the 140,000 square-foot, four-story facility offers breathtaking views of the valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the north and west.

The Center for Music and the Worship Arts features 124 Steinway pianos and 43 teaching studios complete with piano, songwriting, and music computer labs. Additionally, the center includes a 1,600-seat concert hall.

The Center for Natural Sciences houses classrooms, an auditorium, and more than 30 laboratories designed for hands-on learning, including an advanced anatomy lab and a cell culture lab. The facility has more than $2 million in equipment, including a GC mass spectrometer and a gene sequencer.

As the primary academic building on campus, Arthur S. DeMoss Hall spans 500,000 square feet over four floors and houses computer labs, classrooms and student resource centers, and a rooftop terrace.

Jerry Falwell Library houses an array of study spaces including six learning commons, one technology commons, and 30 group-study rooms. Multiple terraces and balconies provide additional space to relax, and several dining options are available. Taking advantage of the latest technology, the ASRS, a robotic retrieval system, houses the majority of the library’s collections in a state-of-the-art automated on-site retrieval system.

The 275-foot-tall Freedom Tower, home of the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity, the nation’s largest center for religious studies and ministerial training, includes classrooms and offices, a conference room, a homiletics lab, and an interactive classroom, as well as observation spaces to take in the spectacular views of campus.

The LaHaye Ice Center is home to Liberty men's and women's hockey teams, as well as the synchronized skating and figure skating teams. Recently renovated, the ice center seats 4,000 fans and includes 10 box suites.

Whichever way you like to break a sweat, you can do it here! The recreation center has weight rooms, cardio lofts, private classrooms, an indoor track, pools, a rock wall, soccer fields, and basketball courts.

The Reber-Thomas Dining Center (Liberty’s dining hall) is a two-story, 120,000-square-foot all-you-care-to-eat buffet that boasts a seating capacity of more than 2,700. It provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers over 20 unique stations to choose from.

The Residential Commons are comprised of three residence halls. The rooms feature a private bath, and every floor provides laundry facilities and a common lounge. Additional residential facilities are also planned for the site.

The three-story structure serves as a home base for the School of Business, which includes 152 programs from the certificate to the doctoral level, as well as centers of excellence focused on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, cybersecurity, and stock trading. On the first floor, a stock trading simulation room, operating in partnership with Truist, features an LED stock ticker that wraps around the top of the room and streams the latest market activity from Wall Street.

The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre offers students the opportunity to ski, snowboard, and tube year-round with its cutting-edge terrain technology.

Tower Theater is home to Liberty’s Department of Theatre Arts as well as the professional theatre company, Alluvion Stage Company. Tower Theater features a Broadway-style fly tower and professional rigging system and has over 12,000 square feet of backstage and support area.

This auditorium’s 10,000 seats are filled by students at Convocation and Campus Community, concert-goers, and athletic event attendees.

The stadium’s 25,000 seats host the fans of our FBS conference football team. Williams Stadium also boasts a 110-foot viewing tower and houses the Football Operations Center, containing locker rooms, coaches’ offices, equipment, and weight rooms, and a training facility.
