Global travel and tourism was an $8.9 trillion (US$) business in 2019 . Moreover, though the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced that number to roughly a quarter of its previous value, all signs point to tourism continuing to grow, expand, and evolve. Every country on Earth has something to offer international visitors, from the pyramids in Egypt to the rainforests of Brazil or the sidewalk cafes of Paris —but which countries attract the most visitors of all? Most of the countries with the highest tourism rates are located in Europe , whose rich history, architecture, and cultural influence make it an appealing destination for many travelers. Countries positioned on or near a body of water are also very popular, particularly those that offer a relaxed, low-key atmosphere mixed with beautiful beaches and ocean views.

Top 10 Countries Most Popular with Tourists (by number of 2019 visitor arrivals)

The most popular tourist destination in the world for more than 30 years, France offers a myriad of attractions: the Eiffel tower, countless world-class restaurants, the Musée du Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, the Notre-Dame cathedral, the beaches of the Côte d'Azur, and of course, Disneyland Paris. Moreover, the lushly beautiful countryside is full of storybook villages, mountains, vineyards, and the occasional castle. One can even view prehistoric cave paintings in Lascaux. Paris, France's capital, is the most visited city in Europe, receiving 38 million tourists in 2019.

Spain is another tourist destination overflowing with interesting attractions. Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia cathedral and other works in Barcelona , the Guggenheim museum, the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, Europe's largest aquarium (the lily-shaped L'Oceanogràfic), the beaches of Gran Canaria, and La Rambla in Barcelona. Spain is also home to El Teide, an ancient—but not entirely dormant—volcano, which visitors can hike around at the Parque Nacional del Teide on the Spanish island Tenerife.

England's capital city, London , attracts visitors with a wide range of sights including Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and the British Museum, which includes the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts outside of Cairo . Beyond London, England offers the mysterious Stonehenge, the Beatles' birthplace in Liverpool , the quaint beauty of the Cotswolds, the sci-fi botanical gardens of the Eden Project, and more. Popular attractions include the Grand Palace in Bangkok; beaches including Railay, Long, and Monkey beach; the ancient city Ayutthaya and ornate Buddhist wat Coi Suthep, and national parks including Khao Yai (where wild elephants roam) and the otherworldly Khao Sok.

The impact of COVID-19 on travel and tourism

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-21 had a devastating effect on the travel and tourism industry. According to a report released by the World Travel & Tourism Council , the pandemic cost the industry an estimated US$ 4.5 trillion in 2020, which resulted in the loss of 62 million tourism-dependent jobs. Data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization backs this up. Consider the following table:

Compared to 2019, tourism dropped by approximately 74% in 2020, with a total of a billion fewer travelers over the course of the year--making 2020 the worst year on record for tourism. The UNTWO's own estimates registered a loss of US$ 1.3 trillion in lost revenues and 100-120 million jobs either lost or at risk.

The impact has been particularly damaging in countries that rely heavily upon tourism as part of their GDP. Lost tourism in Macau, one of China 's special administrative regions, led to a 79.3% drop in year-on-year gambling revenues , which caused overall GDP for 2020 to fall 43.1% compared to the previous year.

While tourism has picked up slightly in 2021, they still fall far short of the pre-pandemic numbers. Late 2020 projections were hopeful that the industry would be back on track by late 2021, but the ongoing nature of the pandemic has thwarted that optimism. As of late 2021, most estimates do not expect the industry to rebound to 2019 (pre-COVID) levels until sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

Stepping up to the second spot is Spain, counting 83.7 million arrivals. Its combination of historical richness, sundrenched coasts, architectural beauty, flamenco music, and the running of the bulls are among the experiences that keep tourists pouring in.

The United States, a country of vast landscape diversity and iconic cities, seizes the third spot with 79.3 million international visitors. From the swarming streets of New York City to California’s golden coasts and Florida’s amusement parks, there is an endless list of attractions for tourists.

In the fourth spot, we see China, an Asian giant that had an impressive 65.7 million arrivals. With its ancient history, diverse culture, and remarkable landmarks like the Great Wall, it continues to enthrall explorers from around the globe.

In 2019, the United Kingdom welcomed 36 million tourists to its towns and cities. London is the country's most visited city, with approximately 12 million visitors each year. Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester are also popular city destinations. Tourism produces around USD 131 billion for the country and provides over two million jobs. American residents are the most frequent visitors, followed by those who live in France. Some of the UK's most popular tourist attractions include Big Ben, the Tower of London and Stonehenge .

9. Thailand: 38 million tourists

Thailand has been a popular tourist destination for decades thanks to its white-sand beaches, delicious cuisine and hot weather. Bangkok , Thailand's capital, frequently holds the top spot as the world's most visited city. It attracts around 22 million visitors each year. The 1,430 islands of Thailand draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, some of the islands are heralded as being some of the best in the world. Thailand's most popular spots include Railay Beach, Koh Phi Phi and The Grand Palace of Bangkok. 

8. Germany: 39 million tourists

Germany is famous for its beer, sausages and picturesque castles. The country welcomes around 39 million tourists each year, with approximately 13 million visiting Berlin, Germany's capital city. Tourism in Germany generates two million jobs for its residents and contributes over 4% towards the country's GDP. 

7. Mexico: 41 million tourists

Mexico , located in the southern part of North America, is rapidly becoming a favorite tourist destination. People from all over the world are visiting the vibrant country to enjoy the pristine beaches, explore the deep history and culture, and discover UNESCO World Heritage sites. Over the last decade, tourism has significantly contributed to Mexico's employment and economy. In 2019, the government announced a six-year strategy to boost tourism and improve conditions for workers within the industry. Some of the country's most visited destinations are Cancun, Mexico City, and Playa del Carmen.

Definition: International inbound tourists (overnight visitors) are the number of tourists who travel to a country other than that in which they have their usual residence, but outside their usual environment, for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose in visiting is other than an activity remunerated from within the country visited. When data on number of tourists are not available, the number of visitors, which includes tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members, is shown instead. Sources and collection methods for arrivals differ across countries. In some cases data are from border statistics (police, immigration, and the like) and supplemented by border surveys. In other cases data are from tourism accommodation establishments. For some countries number of arrivals is limited to arrivals by air and for others to arrivals staying in hotels. Some countries include arrivals of nationals residing abroad while others do not. Caution should thus be used in comparing arrivals across countries. The data on inbound tourists refer to the number of arrivals, not to the number of people traveling. Thus a person who makes several trips to a country during a given period is counted each time as a new arrival.

Development Relevance: Tourism is officially recognized as a directly measurable activity, enabling more accurate analysis and more effective policy. Whereas previously the sector relied mostly on approximations from related areas of measurement (e.g. Balance of Payments statistics), tourism today possesses a range of instruments to track its productive activities and the activities of the consumers that drive them: visitors (both tourists and excursionists). An increasing number of countries have opened up and invested in tourism development, making tourism a key driver of socio-economic progress through export revenues, the creation of jobs and enterprises, and infrastructure development. As an internationally traded service, inbound tourism has become one of the world's major trade categories. For many developing countries it is one of the main sources of foreign exchange income and a major component of exports, creating much needed employment and development opportunities.

Limitations and Exceptions: Tourism can be either domestic or international. The data refers to international tourism, where the traveler's country of residence differs from the visiting country. International tourism consists of inbound (arrival) and outbound (departures) tourism. The data are from the World Tourism Organization (WTO), a United Nations agency. The data on inbound and outbound tourists refer to the number of arrivals and departures, not to the number of people traveling. Thus a person who makes several trips to a country during a given period is counted each time as a new arrival. The data on inbound tourism show the arrivals of nonresident tourists (overnight visitors) at national borders. When data on international tourists are unavailable or incomplete, the data show the arrivals of international visitors, which include tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members. Sources and collection methods for arrivals differ across countries. In some cases data are from border statistics (police, immigration, and the like) and supplemented by border surveys. In other cases data are from tourism accommodation establishments. For some countries number of arrivals is limited to arrivals by air and for others to arrivals staying in hotels. Statistical Concept and Methodology: Statistical information on tourism is based mainly on data on arrivals and overnight stays along with balance of payments information. These data do not completely capture the economic phenomenon of tourism or provide the information needed for effective public policies and efficient business operations. Data are needed on the scale and significance of tourism. Information on the role of tourism in national economies is particularly deficient. Although the World Tourism Organization reports progress in harmonizing definitions and measurement, differences in national practices still prevent full comparability. Arrivals data measure the flows of international visitors to the country of reference: each arrival corresponds to one in inbound tourism trip. If a person visits several countries during the course of a single trip, his/her arrival in each country is recorded separately. In an accounting period, arrivals are not necessarily equal to the number of persons travelling (when a person visits the same country several times a year, each trip by the same person is counted as a separate arrival). Arrivals data should correspond to inbound visitors by including both tourists and same-day non-resident visitors. All other types of travelers (such as border, seasonal and other short-term workers, long-term students and others) should be excluded as they do not qualify as visitors. Data are obtained from different sources: administrative records (immigration, traffic counts, and other possible types of controls), border surveys or a mix of them. If data are obtained from accommodation surveys, the number of guests is used as estimate of arrival figures; consequently, in this case, breakdowns by regions, main purpose of the trip, modes of transport used or forms of organization of the trip are based on complementary visitor surveys.

In 2023, the number of international tourist arrivals worldwide totaled approximately 1.3 billion. While this figure represented a 33 percent annual increase, it remained below the peak in inbound tourist arrivals reported in 2019, the year before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, international tourism receipts worldwide exceeded pre-pandemic levels in 2023, peaking at 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars.

When breaking down the  number of international tourist arrivals worldwide by region , Europe has consistently reported the highest volume of inbound travelers, both before and after the impact of the health crisis. In 2023, this region alone accounted for roughly 55 percent of global inbound tourist arrivals. Meanwhile, Asia and the Pacific recorded the second-highest number of inbound tourist arrivals worldwide in 2023.

According to a new survey, Bali is the top bucket list destination in the world.

What's on your travel bucket list? If you're like most people, the more you travel, the more places you add to your bucket list. So when the editors of the website Big 7 Travel announced the list of the world's top 50 bucket list destinations, we stopped in our tracks and started checking off the boxes.

The website surveyed its 1.5 million-strong social audience  in order to determine the best bucket list places around the world. According to Sarah Clayton-Lea, head of content with Big 7 Travel, this is the first time the site has assembled this list. "Bucket list travel was a trend that popped up again and again in previous surveys when asking our readers what sort of travel content they most enjoyed consuming," says Clayton-Lea. "So, our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to know which destinations people are dreaming of for 2019/2020."

The results of the world’s top 50 bucket list destinations include some of the most beautiful places on earth. "White sandy beaches are still a must-visit for many, with vibrant cities also making an appearance on a lot of people’s bucket lists," says Clayton-Lea. Countries with naturally beautiful scenery and world-famous landmarks came out on top: 22% of the destinations on the list have white sandy beaches, while 52% are iconic cities.

In the study, Big 7 Travel found that people were also more likely to add a destination to their list if they had seen it on social media, and 33% of people research vacation destinations on their Instagram feed. "With over one-third of our readers saying they look to Instagram for travel inspiration, it makes sense that cities with colorful neighborhoods (such as Cape Town’s Bo Kaap) made the cut," says Clayton-Lea.

Bali topped the list of the 50 most popular bucket list destination on earth, but there were also some unexpected picks. "The top 10 list has a lot of the expected dream destinations, but there are a few surprises on the list: Paro Valley in Bhutan, for example, or Virunga National Park in the Congo," says Clayton-Lea. "I think this shows a great appetite for a need to get off the grid and can only assume that social media (and Netflix, in the case of Virunga!) is responsible for spreading the word of these amazing places."

An interesting factoid uncovered in the study: Most people have an average bucket list of just 11 places, with the hope of visiting seven of those locations during their lifetime. No matter how many places are on your bucket list, this ranking will get you dreaming of places near and far. Read on for the top 50 bucket list destinations in the world and what Big 7 Travel had to say about each one.

1. Bali, Indonesia:  "You’ll find beaches, volcanoes, Komodo dragons and jungles sheltering elephants, orangutans and tigers. Basically, it’s paradise. It’s likely you’ve seen an image of Bali on social media at least once in the past seven days, as it’s such a popular bucket list destination for 2019."

2. New Orleans: "The lively city known for its street music, festive vibe and a melting pot of French, African and American cultures is well worth the trip. NOLA is a city packed with adventures at every turn and should be on everyone’s must-visit list."

3. Kerry, Ireland: " All the way west in Ireland is one of the country’s most scenic counties. Kerry’s mountains, lakes and coasts are postcard-perfect, and that’s before you add in Killarney National Park. The unique small towns such as Dingle add to its charm."

4. Marrakesh, Morocco:  "This ancient walled city is home to mosques, palaces and lush gardens. It’s known as The Red City thanks to the color of the brick walls surrounding the city. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre."

5. Sydney: "Sydney is known around the world as one of the greatest and most iconic cities on the planet. Amazing things to do aren’t hard to find; the city has gorgeous beaches, great cafes and world-class entertainment on offer wherever you look."

6. The Maldives: "This tropical nation in the Indian Ocean is made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It’s home to some of the world’s most luxurious hotel resorts, with white sandy beaches, underwater villas and restaurants and bright blue waters."

7. Paris, France: "One of the most iconic cities in the world, Paris tops many people’s bucket lists. You’ll see so many famous landmarks here: the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame cathedral—the list is never-ending."

8. Cape Town, South Africa: "Cape Town is a dream location to visit: endless natural beauty and clifftop views, pastel pink neighborhoods and turquoise waters."

9. Dubai, U.A.E.: "The high-flying city of the U.A.E, Dubai is one of the most glamorous destinations you’ll ever visit, and is particularly popular with Big 7 Travel readers."

14. Rome, Italy: "Whether it’s your first time in Rome or your 50th, the best thing about this city is that you’ll always discover something new each time you stroll the scenic streets."

15. Paro Valley, Bhutan:  Paro Valley is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs ) and dramatic landscapes. Tucked between China and India, Bhutan is a mysterious country that prides itself on sustainable tourism. You’ll find Paro Taktsang here, a Himalayan Buddhist sacred site."

16. Jaipur, India: "Jaipur is known as the ‘Pink City’ for its pale terracotta buildings. This was originally done to impress the visiting Prince Albert during his 1876 tour of India by order of the Maharaja (Sawai Ram Singh). Even today, it’s illegal to paint buildings any other color."

17. Waikato, New Zealand:  "Waikato, a region in New Zealand’s North Island, is home to massive underground caves, lush rainforest and the buzzy city of Hamilton. But the area’s main attraction? A Middle-earth adventure on the film set of  Lord of the Rings. Hobbiton Movie Set still has the original Hobbit holes from the making of the films."

18. Havana, Cuba:  "Cuba’s capital is almost 500 years old and a riot of color. Brightly painted buildings and vintage cars make Havana a photogenic dream."

26. Singapore : "Singapore is a small island city-state off southern Malaysia which punches way above its weight on a global level. It’s a modern city with colorful buildings, futuristic bridges and a cloud forest."

27. London, England: "Pretty pink restaurants, futuristic space-age toilets and jungle skyline views are just some of our favorite things about London. And of course, all the classics: Big Ben, red phone boxes and world-class museums and galleries."

28. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:  "Rio de Janeiro has always been one of the most iconic cities in the world with instantly recognizable landscapes and landmarks."

37. Laucala Island Resort, Fiji:  "Laucala Island Resort is a private island in Fiji, in absolute paradise. It is one of three small islands off the northeast coast of Taveuni in Fiji. There are coconut trees, a sustainable farm and miles of beach, as well as coral reefs, postcard-perfect beaches and lush rainforest."

Top 50 Best Countries to Visit

Introduction

I have visited every country in the world (before turning 28), and more than 1,500 destinations since I went alone to Egypt at the age of 17. It is difficult to make a top list of the best countries to visit, but below are 50 of my favourite countries based on my experiences with more than 3,500 days of travel so far.

I have visited all of South Africa’s provinces and spent almost five months visiting many destinations in the country. My favourite city in the world is Cape Town, and my favourite region is the Western Cape. I have also experienced three great train journeys, The Blue Train, Rovos Rail and the Shongololo Express, which were all very impressive. I have experienced extraordinary safari experiences in Krüger National Park and Sabi Sands and stayed over a month in Johannesburg, which is my favourite underrated city in the world.

The food is fantastic, and my favourite restaurant in the world is probably The Test Kitchen in Cape Town. I also spend a good amount of time chasing some of the difficult African visas in Pretoria. South Africa has excellent value for money and a lot to offer. South Africa is a diverse country where you could travel for years and still have exciting things left to see. A worthy candidate for the best country in the world to visit.

I have spent over ten months in this small Baltic country, where I lived in the Old Town of Tallinn (UNESCO World Heritage Site) for eight months during the pandemic. I have visited many cities, towns and islands. Tallinn, Hiiumaa, Prangli, Viljandi and Vormsi are my favourites, while my visit to Narva was one of the most interesting experiences.

I find Estonia surprisingly similar to Scandinavia, with Saaremaa and Hiiumaa being similar to Thy, Denmark, where I grew up. Estonia offers some of the best value in Europe, great hospitality, excellent food, and many lovely travel experiences.

A former German colony under the name German South West Africa. I came to Namibia by train on the Shongololo Express and had many great experiences in the country. I stayed with locals in the capital, Windhoek, and I went to the famous Namib desert and enjoyed the extraordinary Sossusvlei.

Namibia has some of the best nature and natural landscapes in the world, and it is the second least densely populated country on earth. It has many similarities to South Africa but is a lot safer. Namibia also has fantastic infrastructure and friendly people. An amazing country to visit.

New Zealand is an extraordinary country with stunning nature, great food and relaxed culture.  I’ve had some great hitchhiking adventures here, including my first big trip, almost 200 kilometres with six different cars, before finally reaching the beautiful remote Grasmere Lodge.

Queenstown is stunning and one of my favourite towns in the world, but it is the extraordinary nature experiences that make me rank New Zealand among the best countries to travel to. Since this is a list of favourite countries, not separating territories, I would also like to mention the Cook Islands, which is technically part of New Zealand. I especially liked the island of Aitutaki, which I consider one of the most beautiful in the world.

The best country in the world for food, but Italy has so much more to offer. I’ve visited more than 30 destinations in Italy, with the Amalfi Coast, Assisi, Rome, Sicily, South Tyrol and Tuscany being my favourites. Great value for money if you go to the right places. Fantastic people and culture. There is nothing like Italy!

I’ve been to over 60 private island resorts in the Maldives, including some of the best in the world. The best experiences included Gili Lankanfushi, Soneva Fushi, Six Senses Laamu, and being on a Four Seasons cruise. I also visited some of the local islands, but it is the stunning private island resorts that make the Maldives special and unique.

In 2009 I visited Australia for the first time using primarily Couchsurfing and Tiger Airways, the low-cost carrier to get between different destinations in the country. On my first trip, I visited Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Tasmania, Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast Brisbane and other places in Queensland. I loved the laid-back culture, food, nature and the fantastic cities of Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, which are four of my favourite cities.

Unfortunately, it is a costly destination but an extraordinary country to visit. I returned to Australia in 2011, 2015 and 2018 and had more amazing experiences. I visited their stunning Indian Ocean territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, where I was especially impressed with Direction Island (photo above), which beach was voted the best in Australia in 2017.

I have travelled extensively in the United States, visiting more than 50 destinations, 36 states and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, St. Croix and Tinian. With America, it depends a lot on where I am. There are many wonderful experiences to be found, but also a lot of places that didn’t impress me. Alaska (photo), and New York City are my two favourite places so far. In recent years, America has become extremely expensive for travel, and that means the overall impression of travelling in America has dropped for me.

Because of its extraordinary territories, I rank the United Kingdom as one of my favourite countries. I visited South Georgia Island (photo above) and the Falkland Islands on a Silversea cruise, which were extraordinary experiences. In the Caribbean, the territories Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands are all lovely, as well as Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel Islands, Gibraltar and Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean.

The countryside is fantastic, and I’ve had great experiences in England, Wales and Scotland. Thinking about the UK, I would be most excited to explore more of Scotland, my favourite part of mainland Great Britain.

My country of Denmark is a fantastic country to visit. It is one of the best countries in the world for quality of life. For travel, there are a lot of countries with a lot more to offer, but we actually have enough for several months of travelling. We are much more than Copenhagen, which for me isn’t the highlight of Denmark, and very different to Jutland, where I grew up. Besides our capital, we have almost 80 inhabited islands, of which I have visited more than 50, and visiting islands is something I really enjoy. Anholt, Avernakø, Bornholm, Christiansø and Livø are all well worth a visit.

If you like Copenhagen, we have three other cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg. They all have great attractions and food. We also have beautiful and famous castles (Frederiksborg Castle in the photo above), great national parks, theme parks and a lot more. We are a great country to visit, but unfortunately, one of the most expensive and I understand if Denmark is not at the top of your list for this reason.

This is a list of countries which help Denmark rank high. The Faroe Islands and Greenland are not independent countries as per the United Nations, and it is two fantastic travel destinations in addition to the mainland of Denmark. I visited both in 2013 and would very much like to visit them again.

11. Iceland The country in the world that feels most similar to Denmark, in my opinion. Iceland was part of Denmark and is the only country outside Denmark that teaches Danish in schools. I would probably rank it even higher if Iceland were a cheap country. It is an expensive country, but one of the most beautiful in the world, with outstanding nature experiences, friendly people, fantastic food (Restaurant Dill is one of the best restaurants I have experienced in the world) and has been ranked as the most environmentally clean country in the world.

12. Norway If Norway was a cheap country, it could be even higher on the list, but it is unfortunately very expensive, and one of the reasons I haven’t seen more of this stunning country. I visited Norway for the first time with my family as a kid and later went back a few times myself. The beautiful countryside with extraordinary nature makes Norway one of the best countries in the world to travel to. Of all the places I have been to, the remote Svalbard island and its “capital”, Longyearbyen, made the biggest impression on me. Longyearbyen is the world’s northernmost settlement, with a population greater than 1,000.

13. Ireland Ireland is a fascinating country to visit. Its capital, Dublin, is not one of my favourite cities. Instead, the countryside and the friendly people make Ireland special for me. Since Ireland is one of the more expensive countries, I decided to hitchhike several times in the country, but it made my adventures there even better. I found the Irish people talkative and very friendly. Ireland was also one of the countries I found most similar to Denmark, and as they speak English, Ireland feels easy and homely to travel in.

14. Canada Canada is a very big country with a lot to offer travellers. I would like to have travelled a lot more in Canada than I have. Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City, Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the stunning Prince Edward Island is about it. Based on those experiences, I rank Canada as one of my favourites, but if I get to experience a lot more of the country, I might rank it even higher in the future. Definitely very impressed with my first visits.

15. France I visited France for the first time as a 12-year-old in 2000 with my family and experienced the Tour de France on Mont Ventoux that year. I have since travelled to France with my school, several trips alone and later a few trips with my girlfriend, who is now my wife. I asked her in front of the Eiffel Tower if she would marry me, and she accepted.

France has given me many memories. It’s one of the easiest and most enjoyable countries to make a road trip. I find it easy to drive in France and the countryside is fantastic with many things to do and see. France is my second favourite country in the world for food, and I have experienced some of the best meals of my life in France. There will always be things to do in France, and it’s a country I would like to visit many times in the future. France also has impressive remote territories like Reunion, New Caledonia and St. Pierre, which I really enjoyed. Bora Bora didn’t meet my expectations, but I enjoyed other places in French Polynesia. Their Caribbean islands are stunning, with Saint Barthélemy being the best, in my opinion.

16. Thailand My favourite country in Asia if we consider the Maldives an Indian Ocean country. I have spent around 10 weeks in Thailand over several visits and had many great experiences. I find the Thai people some of the friendliest in the world. The value for money is great, the service is fantastic, and there is a lot to see. My favourite destination is the island of Ko Kut, but there are many other lovely places in different parts of the country.

17. The Seychelles I spent a month in the Seychelles and stayed at North Island and Frégate Island. Two of the most exclusive resorts in the world. I have visited the three main islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, and other beautiful islands such as Bird Island and Desroches. All stunningly beautiful and with a relaxed atmosphere. My best visit was the first one in 2009, but since then, the Seychelles has unfortunately changed into a mass-tourism destination instead of being a much more exclusive one.

18. Portugal I first went to Portugal at the age of 17 and visited the three biggest cities, Lisbon, Porto and Braga. At that time, football was a big interest, and I saw several matches such as Benfica – Liverpool in the Champions League and Benfica – Porto in the Portuguese league. I have since visited much more of the country, and my favourites are now the Algarve, the Douro Valley, Madeira and the Azores. Stunning destinations with some of the friendliest people in Europe, if not the whole world. The value for money is fantastic compared to other European countries.

19. Indonesia Indonesia is a very big country with a lot of different cultures. The travel club, Travelers’ Century Club, split the country into seven different parts in their list of countries and territories. I visited all of them, and the most famous destination is by far the best, in my opinion. I have spent over a month in Bali, and it’s one of the best destinations in the world for an outstanding holiday with fantastic natural beauty, world-class resorts, excellent service, friendly people and extraordinary value for money.

20. The Netherlands I have spent more than a month in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world, in my opinion, the countryside is stunning, and their islands are lovely. I liked the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba and St. Maarten, while the Wadden Sea islands of Texel, Vlieland, Schiermonnikroog and Terschelling are some of my favourite islands in Europe. Two of my favourite restaurants in the world are Dutch: Samhoud Places in Amsterdam and Inter Scaldes in the province of Zeeland.

21. Sweden Sweden is home to two of my favourite cities in the world, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Gothenburg is a cheap ferry ride away from Northern Jutland, the region in Denmark where I grew up, while Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, if not the world, with its stunning archipelago. I have also done road trips in Sweden and enjoyed the stunning countryside. It feels very similar to Denmark and is a country I would like to visit again and again.

22. Botswana One of the best countries in the world for safari. I spent a week and had extraordinary safari experiences in Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, and Chobe National Park. They are very exclusive and not the best value, but they are definitely impressive.

23. Finland Finland is similar to Estonia but much more expensive and, thereby, a less attractive country to travel to. I’ve been twice and been impressed, but a lot more travel is needed to have fully explored the country.

24. Rwanda Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills and was probably the most surprising country in my travels. I didn’t have high expectations when I first arrived in Rwanda, but it was fantastic. The infrastructure is fantastic by African standards, which was surprising. I first travelled from Kigali to Gisenyi and back. Then from Kigali to Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi. All trips were spectacular, with stunning landscapes. Kigali is historically interesting and cheap to get around by public motorbikes.

25. Spain Spain ranked as the second most visited country in the world based on the World Tourism Organization’s list of tourist arrivals in 2018. It’s easy to understand why Spain is popular. Excellent weather, beautiful islands, great beaches, fantastic food, exciting cities, and impressive sights.

I have travelled a lot in Spain, and my experiences have varied a lot. I like staying away from mass tourist destinations (like Ibiza and Menorca, which didn’t impress me much) and prefer quiet places in the countryside. That said, I have visited more than ten cities in Spain and enjoyed exploring the cities on foot. I have included Spain because of the food, countryside and many things to do and see. I consider Spain to be the third-best country in the world for food after Italy and France. You could travel within Spain for many years and still find things to do. On my most recent trip, I visited Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera for the first time.

26. Switzerland It is one of the most expensive countries in the world, but the stunning nature and scenery make it one of the best. I have visited Bern, Zürich, Geneva, Lugano and Basel, as well as the outstanding Swiss countryside with beautiful mountains. Definitely a country I would like to revisit.

27. Dominica My favourite country in the Caribbean. Dominica has great value for money, stunning nature, landscapes, and friendly people. I like it a lot and would like to experience it a lot more.

28. Japan There is nothing like Japan. A unique country with a unique culture and some of the friendliest people in the world. The world’s biggest city, Tokyo, is fascinating. I have also visited Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, the Japanese countryside and the remote territories of Okinawa and Ogasawara. Ogasawara is quite an adventure, reachable by a ferry journey of approximately 25 hours from Tokyo.

29. Zimbabwe I arrived in Zimbabwe on the famous Rovos Rail train and had a lovely time in Victoria Falls for six nights, staying in six different places. I experienced great safaris and a helicopter trip of the famous Victoria Falls waterfall. Zimbabwe is not the most attractive country due to logistics and a limited amount of flights compared to, for example, South Africa, but I would like to visit the country again and know it better. The first visit was fantastic.

30. Palau With a population of just over 18,000, Palau is one of the smallest countries in the world after gaining independence from the United States in 1994. Palau turned out to be a fantastic experience with stunning natural beauty and with a friendly, trustful population. It was probably the easiest country in the world to hitchhike, and it was a great way to get around. I might never get to go back to Palau (it’s remote and expensive to get to), but I was impressed with my visit, which left me with great memories.

31. Brazil My wife is Brazilian, and getting married to her in her hometown, Sanharó, in front of around 400 people was one of the best experiences of my life. I have visited over 25 destinations in Brazil and spent over 100 days. My favourites are Rio de Janeiro (one of the most beautiful cities in the world) and Fernando de Noronha, a stunning volcanic archipelago about 350 kilometres off Brazil’s northeast coast.

32. Bhutan According to GNH, Bhutan is the happiest country in the world and the only country with a fixed daily cost. Its unique culture, stunning unspoiled nature and friendly people make it a very special country to visit. It’s very expensive, and that’s the main reason I have only been to Bhutan once.

33. Sao Tome and Principe This former Portuguese colony is located in the Atlantic Ocean and is a beautiful small country with the smaller Principe island ticking the boxes for a stunning, remote and adventurous island experience.

34. Peru Peru is a fantastic adventure. I had great experiences in Lima, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley. I arrived at Machu Picchu on the famous Hiram Bingham train and saw this stunning sight, which is one of the most impressive I’ve seen anywhere in the world.

35. St. Lucia St. Lucia is a stunning small Caribbean island which felt adventurous. I stayed at the stunning Jade Mountain resort with views of Piti and Gros Piton mountains, which was one of the best experiences I’ve had in the Caribbean.

36. Mexico A stunning country with friendly people and a lot to experience. I have been to the Cancun/Playa del Carmen area, Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende. That’s about it, and it’s only a little of what Mexico has to offer. I would like to experience much more in the future, which might impact my ranking of Mexico.

37. Yemen In 2014, I visited Yemen as part of my project to visit every country in the world. It required a lot of planning, but it was an outstanding travel experience. First, I spent three nights in the capital, Sana’a, a city with unique architecture, where I experienced a lot. After Sana’a, three nights followed on Socotra Island in the Indian Ocean, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful I have been to in the world. I might never go back to Yemen, but I was very impressed with my experiences during my first and only visit.

38. India India is a fascinating and unique country to travel to. I have spent around six weeks in India and had some fantastic, unique experiences but also bad ones. The worst was in the Andaman Islands, where I got severe food poisoning and was very sick. My best experiences were in Rajasthan, Agra, Goa and Kashmir. I also visited New Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Goa, Darjeeling, Gurgaon and Udaipur, where I stayed at the famous Taj Lake Palace.

39. Belgium I have visited Belgium several times and experienced a lot there. Cities like Brussels, Bruges, Leuven and Tournai have impressive sights, while the countryside is beautiful and good for a road trip.

40. Tanzania I have been to Tanzania a few times and have been very impressed. Extraordinary safari experiences and friendly people stand out. I stayed at Singita Grumeti Reserves, which Travel + Leisure has named the best hotel in the world on more than one occasion. It was an outstanding safari experience with outstanding accommodation. I also stayed at other beautiful properties on mainland Tanzania as well as on their stunning Zanzibar island, which I have visited twice.

41. Greece Greece is a very popular tourist destination for Europeans, which is one reason I don’t rank Greece higher than I do. Greece has fantastic food, great sights and stunning islands. I liked Santorini and Mykonos the most, while Athens is one of the best capital cities of Europe in my opinion.

42. Germany I have travelled a lot in Germany and visited over 50 destinations in the country. It is a big country with a lot to do and see. My favourites are Berlin, Lübeck, Trier, Sylt and the Black Forest.

43. Laos A great cheaper alternative to Thailand. The capital, Vientiane, was interesting, while Luang Prabang was one of the best cities I’ve been to in Asia.

44. Kenya Kenya is another great country to travel to in East Africa and one that is quite developed by African standards. I have visited Kenya several times and had great experiences. Hemingways, House of Waine and Hogmead in the Karen were all lovely, while I travelled far partly by uncomfortable public transport to reach Ngerende Island Lodge. I would like to experience more of Kenya again in the future.

45. Mauritius I did ‘resort hopping’ in this Indian Ocean country and stayed at more than 30 beautiful properties in the country, seeing many beautiful spots, as well as visiting the remote Rodrigues island, which is one of my favourite islands in the world, and something that felt different; like arriving in another country. Mauritius is an expensive destination, but there are great value rates at some of the resorts in the low season.

46. Argentina I have visited Argentina twice and been impressed with Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. Friendly people, excellent food and a lot to do and see. I would like to experience a lot more of Argentina in the future.

47. Nicaragua Costa Rica or Nicaragua? I recommend both, but I would pick Nicaragua for better value for money and for the amount of things to do and see. I enjoyed Granada, which is said to be the oldest colonial town in Latin America, as well as Jicaro Island, San Juan del Sur and other parts of the country. I think Nicaragua is a worthy candidate for a top 50 list of the best countries to visit in the world.

48. Austria Beautiful historic cities and stunning countryside. Austria is a great country to travel to and a country similar to Germany and Switzerland, which are also part of this list.

49. Vanuatu Vanuatu is one of my favourite countries in the Pacific. It’s naturally beautiful, has some of the friendliest people, and stunning nature, including fantastic beaches. Besides visiting Efate (the island of the capital, Port Vila), I took a domestic flight to Espiritu Santo and visited the remote Ratua Private Island, which was an extraordinary experience.

50. Montenegro My favourite country in the Balkans. I stayed at the lovely The Chedi Luštica Bay for almost three months during the pandemic and experienced a lot of beautiful sights in different parts of the country. 

Is your country not on the list? It’s not easy to pick 50, and I think it’s possible to have amazing experiences in any country, depending on the people you meet and the places you go. This is more of a list of countries I overall enjoyed the most and would like to visit again. Iran probably had the friendliest people, and the most different country was North Korea, but I am not planning to visit them again.

Favourite countries might also change over the years. The experience of visiting a country can change a lot in just a few years. The first time I went to Seychelles, it had fewer tourists than it had on my last visit. Fewer tourists often equals a better travel experience, at least in my opinion.

World Tourism Rankings

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates that internationally there were just 25 million tourist arrivals in 1950. 68 years later this number has increased to 1  billion  international arrivals per year.

Every country on Earth has something to offer international visitors, from the pyramids in Egypt to the rain forests of Brazil or the sidewalk cafes of Paris but which countries attract the most visitors of all? Most of the countries with the highest tourism rates are located in Europe, whose rich history, architecture, and cultural influence make it an appealing destination for many travelers. Countries positioned on or near a body of water are also very popular, particularly those that offer a relaxed, low-key atmosphere mixed with beautiful beaches and ocean views.

International Arrivals Per Year

According to the  World Tourism Organization’s  yearly highlights report, there was a growth of 7% in international tourist arrivals in the last 10 years. Europe makes up 51% of the 1,326 million figure, followed by Asia and the Pacific at 24%. Economic gain through tourism peaked at US$ 1,340 billion, divided up between Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and Americas.

While tourism has picked up slightly in 2021, they still fall far short of the pre-pandemic numbers. Late 2020 projections were hopeful that the industry would be back on track by late 2021, but the ongoing nature of the pandemic has thwarted that optimism. As of late 2021, most estimates do not expect the industry to rebound to 2019 (pre-COVID) levels until sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

Top 10 Most visited Country in the World

The most popular tourist destination in the world for more than 30 years, France offers a myriad of attractions: the Eiffel tower, countless world-class restaurants, the Musée du Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, the Notre-Dame cathedral, the beaches of the Côte d’Azur, and of course, Disneyland Paris. Moreover, the lushly beautiful countryside is full of storybook villages, mountains, vineyards, and the occasional castle. One can even view prehistoric cave paintings in Lascaux. Paris, France’s capital, is the most visited city in Europe, receiving 38 million tourists in 2019.

Countries With the Most International Tourists

As tourism rebounds from pandemic lows, the United Nations reports these countries welcomed the most visitors last year.

Tourism is Rebounding

Two years after the COVID-19 pandemic essentially shut down international travel worldwide, the tourism industry is bouncing back as summer arrives in the northern hemisphere.

International tourism saw a close to 200% year-over-year increase in the first quarter of 2022, and although several related statistics are still well below 2019 levels, gradual recovery is expected to continue throughout the year, according to June analysis from the United Nations World Tourism Organization . Nearly 50% of experts surveyed by the organization said they expect international tourism to return to those pre-pandemic levels from three years ago in 2023, while 44% said it could be 2024 or later.

This is especially good news for countries whose economies are the most reliant on the tourism industry. Those countries include Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba and St. Lucia, according to 2021 gross domestic product data released in June by The World Travel & Tourism Council.

But the countries most supported economically by tourism aren't necessarily the ones that welcome the most visitors. The United Nations compiles several metrics related to inbound tourism by country , including international tourist arrivals, with the most recent data being from 2021. The statistics show that industry recovery still has a ways to go: The most-visited country in 2021 had about 32 million international arrivals. France, the top-ranked country in 2019 – before the pandemic hit – had 90 million.

Here are the countries that welcomed the most international tourist arrivals in 2021, according to the U.N. Included for each are other pieces of tourism-related data, such as GDP contribution percentages from the WTTC.

10. Hungary

Is it difficult to name just one country when somebody asks you your favorite? Multiple factors might go into assigning this top spot. The culture. The food. The people. Or that crazy, unforgettable adventure you had. There are plenty of travel destination lists out there, but we’re interested in the king of said lists: the 50 best countries in the world.

So, how does a country get included in such a prestigious index? U.S. News & World Report gathered data from a survey of 20,000 people across the globe. It presented a list of 10 attributes: adventure, cultural influence, heritage, entrepreneurship, movers, open for business, power, agility, social purpose and quality of life. And — alas! — this list was born. 

These are the 50 best countries in the world. If your favorite country doesn’t rank where you thought it might, just remember that it’s No. 1 in your book. But, honestly, maybe you should check out some of these far superior destinations. OK, OK, let the debate begin...

How Peru Ranks

Peru’s history traces back to the Incan Empire, and Machu Picchu is the country's major tourist attraction that sits high in the Andes Mountains. While you might visit Peru to experience these ancient ruins, the country is also home to plenty of other sites like Colca Canyon (the deepest canyon in the world) and the Amazon rainforest. 

It's also an excellent country for scenic hiking, eating potatoes (yum!) and bird watching, ranking well in the U.S. News' adventure and heritage categories. While you’re there, try a pisco sour, a refreshing drink made using lemon, sugar, egg and ice. But watch it — too many of these will have you face down on the floor.

What ranked Peru on the lower end of this list is its score for power, as it lacks a strong military, international political influence and strong international alliances.

How Chile Ranks

Chile is the long, narrow country that takes up most of the length of South America’s western coastline. From top to bottom, it covers 2,700 miles, with the widest point being 150 miles! Here you’ll find the world’s largest swimming pool, the driest place on Earth, world-class wine, active volcanoes and five UNESCO World Heritage sites. 

Among these sites is Easter Island, the mysterious island filled with about 900 moai statues weighing about 14 tons each! So, where did they come from, and how did they get there? It’s still a mystery. 

Like Peru to the north, Chile ranks low in terms of entrepreneurship and power but is strongly tied to its heritage and is good to its citizens.

How Hungary Ranks

Cheaper than its Western European counterparts, Hungary is a gem of a country. Most travelers who make it here spend time in gorgeous Budapest, famous for its striking Parliament building and lavish bathhouses. But adventurers who seek out places beyond the capital encounter true hidden gems in smaller medieval cities and unspoiled landscapes. 

Hungary shines in social purpose as one of the top 25 countries — an impressive feat for a former Soviet state. It also ranks well for quality of life. Wise up and visit before the word gets out.

How Vietnam Ranks

Vietnam shares its borders with Cambodia, Laos and the South China Sea, but it shines bright enough to land on this list. The densely populated country has incredibly beautiful landscapes. Here you’ll find emerald island coves, big beaches and lush jungles. Don’t miss the chance to see the Golden Bridge , a 492-foot pedestrian bridge held up by two giant sculpted hands! 

Even more noteworthy than Vietnam’s landscapes is its food. Vietnamese cuisine is considered some of the healthiest in the world. They like to use a lot of fresh ingredients, including seafood, vegetables and herbs.

How the Philippines Ranks

The Philippines is made up of 7,641 islands, but only about 2,000 are inhabited. Spain, Japan and the U.S. all colonized the Philippines at one point, and it played a critical role in World War II. 

It’s an excellent place for snorkeling with whale sharks, laying in the sun and riding around in Jeepneys. One thing’s for sure, Filipinos are some of the friendliest people in the world.

Do you picture Medieval fortresses, Baroque churches and limestone buildings when you think of Croatia? Us, too. This small country lines the Adriatic Sea and includes more than 1,200 islands, isles and inlets (nope, those words don’t mean the same thing).

How Morocco Ranks

Morocco, aka the Kingdom of Morocco, is about the same size as the state of California. It lies on the northwest coast of Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Did you know it’s only an hour ferry ride away from Spain? 

Architecture in Morocco is incredibly beautiful. Marrakech , specifically, is a photographer’s dream! South Africa has come a long way from its dark past. Today, it’s a world-class destination for tourists who travel to visit vineyards, embark on safaris, go shopping and taste fine dining.

Costa Rica is one of the most stable countries in Central America. The tropical nation leads the way in ecotourism by promoting and encouraging sustainability efforts on tours, hotels and restaurants. Fun fact: Costa Rica hosts more than 5 percent of the world’s biodiversity even though its landmass only takes up .03 percent of the planet’s surface.

Sri Lanka is a relatively young nation that claimed independence in 1948. Now, it’s a hub for tourism drawn by ancient Buddhist temples, beautiful beaches, traditional (spicy) food and lush jungles. 

FYI: Sri Lanka is the leading tea producer in the world! Tea enthusiasts can learn all about the country’s history with tea at the Ceylon Tea Museum . While the country’s economy is certainly on the up-and-up, the main factor keeping Sri Lanka on the lower end of this list is the way it treats its citizens, scoring poorly in gender equality, caring about human rights and trustworthiness.

Honorable Mention: Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is teeming with culture and suave dance moves. It’s the site of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas and the first European settlement. The capital city, Santo Domingo, is where the first Catholic cathedral, first university and first hospital were established in the Americas. (There really are a lot of “firsts” associated with this Caribbean country.) 

The Dominican Republic is also known for producing some of the best baseball players in the world, such as Bartolo Colón and Robinson Canó! When you visit this country, be sure to try merengue, a Latin style of dancing that’s sure to bring out your two left feet. Plus, the country’s waterfalls and ocean activities make it an adventurer’s paradise.

Honorable Mention: Panama

Receiving placements within the top 50 in previous years, these countries deserve an honorable mention.

Panama is a narrow country in Central America, most famous for the Panama Canal that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Did you know it takes a ship eight to 10 hours to make its way through the canal?! Geez, that’s a time commitment. 

Besides this necessary feat in history, Panama is the only place in the world where you can watch the sunrise in the Pacific and sunset on the Atlantic. It just takes an aggressive hike up to the highest point in the country, Volcan Baru. Sweat-provoking? Yes. Worth it? Definitely. 

Panama attracts several foreign corporations from near and far due to its scarce regulation of tax-exempt offshore banking. And, of course, its beautiful beaches attract tourists seeking adventure.
