Things to Do on a Cruise to Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is the home to many up-and-coming cities and is filled with exotic cuisine that is fast becoming a favorite in America. However, this collection of nations also holds on tight to its Hindu and Buddhist cultures with expansive and shining temples dating back centuries. Continue below for sample experiences to help you make the most of your time spent cruising through Southeast Asia:

Angkor Wat in Siem Reap

  • Explore the extensive temple complex of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. These stunning buildings were constructed in the 12th century and are surrounded by a protective moat.
  • Take a moped ride through the lively streets of Bangkok, a crowded metropolis that has bustling markets, bright colorful produce, exotic street foods and a vibrant population.

Bagan Archaeological Zone in Myanmar (Burma)

  • We’ve already touched on the stunning Angkor Wat, but there are amazing temples all over this land, from the extremely intricate designs of Bangkok’s temples to the Bagan Archaeological Zone in Myanmar (Burma) where at one time there were 10,000 religious structures. Now this area is still home to over 2,000 remaining temples.
  • Walk through the streets and the markets to find beautiful handiwork, different street foods and interesting performers, like snake charmers.

Balinese massage

  • Take in the arts of Indonesia with a stop in Bali, which takes seriously its historical dances, songs and paintings.
  • Relax with a massage. Massage is like medicine to the people of Southeast Asia, so try all different forms of the service – from the pressure filled approach of the Thai massage to the soothing Balinese approach.

The Best Southeast Asia Cruises: 4 Great Small Ship Itineraries

By Heidi Sarna

March 11, 2023

I’ve sailed on more than 125 cruises and have always gravitated toward the smaller ships (under 300 passengers) for the uncrowded, up-close-and-personal experience they provide. That’s why I cofounded QuirkyCruise.com to share reviews and news about small-ship cruises around the world, from Europe to North America and Asia.

Based in Singapore for the past 17 years, I’ve done a lot of small ship cruising in the region. Here are four of my favorite small ship cruise itineraries in Southeast Asia.

southeast asia cruise ship

Upper Mekong River in Laos

The Mekong River winds its way down from China through several countries before emptying into the South China Sea. I recently cruised for 10 days on the section that flows through sparsely populated Laos , between capital city Vientiane and the Thai border near Chiang Rai, enjoying the mountainous terrain and zigzagging route.

In some spots the riverbanks are sandy like a beach. Elsewhere, river levels may be low due to normal seasonal fluctuations as well as dam-building farther upriver, and the exposed rocks create a beautiful lunar tableau—and a challenging obstacle course for ship captains.

Excursions along the way include treks to caves, waterfalls, and mountainside shrines, as well as walks through remote villages. A day or two is spent in the atmospheric city of Luang Prabang at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers to tour the many Buddhist temples and monasteries.

Lower Mekong River in Cambodia and Vietnam

The classic weeklong Mekong itinerary cruises between river points near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam , and Siem Reap, Cambodia , where you should definitely stay for a few days to see the spectacular centuries-old temple ruins at Angkor Wat .

On the Lower Mekong, the riverscape varies from remote and pastoral on the Cambodian side—where you can spot people bathing and slapping laundry against stones at the river’s edge—to the more industrial and bustling Vietnam part of the river. Emerald-green terraced rice fields, shipbuilders, and other businesses cling to the river at many points.

southeast asia cruise ship

On excursions, you can walk through villages and past picture-perfect rice fields and venture into pungent wet markets and floating fish farms. There are also temples, monasteries, and Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh , a mix of shiny new buildings and French colonial architecture.

Indonesian Archipelago

Small ship cruise itineraries focus on two areas of the Indonesian archipelago in the heart of the Coral Triangle, site of the world’s richest marine biodiversity and therefore some of the world’s best diving and snorkeling, too.

On vessels ranging from motor yachts to modern sailing ships as well as traditional pinisi -style schooners, cruises on the western route typically travel between the islands of Bali and Flores , focusing on the volcanic Komodo island, famous for its huge monitor lizards, aka Komodo dragons.

southeast asia cruise ship

In the east, meanwhile, voyages in the Raja Ampat archipelago and West Papua province are all about beaches, bays, lagoons, and legendary avian species such as the elusive and beautiful bird of paradise.

Red River and Halong Bay in Vietnam

On a 10-day itinerary, a small ship can cover several hundred miles between Halong Bay  (pictured at the top of this page) and Hoa Binh in northern Vietnam, spending a few days in the picturesque and otherworldly limestone karst–studded Halong Bay, the dramatic backdrop to films like Indochine (1992) and The Quiet American (2002).

southeast asia cruise ship

Except for a day in frenetic and fascinating Hanoi (notable for its colonial architecture, war heritage, and foodie culture), the rest of this route is spent on the Red River and its tributaries, which reach into the rural landscapes and small towns of Vietnam’s heartland.

Among the rewarding ways to spend time off the ship: village walks, kayaking in Halong Bay, watching a traditional water puppet show, taking tours of heritage sites, and getting a close-up look at traditional methods for making ceramics, furniture, rice wine, knives, and noodles.

You’ll find bespoke suits and gowns on Nguyen Trai Street in Ho Chi Minh, and artisan ceramics, bamboo sculptures, and woven baskets in the craft villages around Hanoi.

Featured Southeast Asia Cruise Ports

Take a trip along the river by boat as you pass gilded pagodas and watch small neighborhoods come to life. Tour the massive Grand Palace to uncover the rich history of Thailand’s royal dynasties. Sample spicy, nutty satay and savory spring rolls at the enormous Chatuchak Market while you shop for bargains.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest metropolis, and a thriving business, commercial, and tourism center. Start your adventure on the busy and vibrant Pham Ngu Lao Street and try a traditional glass of sweet and nutty Nước Sâm tea. Pay a visit to the 19th-century Notre Dame Cathedral, designed in a striking neo-Romanesque style and topped with towering iron spires. Visit the floating markets along the Mekong Delta to experience an age-old tradition of Vietnamese trade and commerce.

In Singapore, you’ll find a fascinatingly advanced city anchored in both its thirst for modern might and its cultural traditions. Try some tasty Malaysian treats from the food stalls along the charming, lantern-lit Jalan Alor street. Visit one of Asia’s most luxurious shopping centers at Suria KLCC. Learn about the city’s diverse religious history through detailed wood carvings on display at the Islamic Arts Museum.

What Travelers Say About Their Southeast Asia Cruise

Absolutely fabulous. I’ve been recommending this trip to everyone. We had the most fabulous holiday. Superb food, great accommodations with a very comfortable bed. Great shower room. Extremely friendly crew who did more than enough for us to have a really good time. Just brilliant from start to finish.

National Geographic folks - the best. Crew on Jahan - super. They treat you so well. You expect the best and you get it.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent.

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

Great guides together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

Accommodations Review

Great accommodations. Clean and comfortable beds, even the pillows were comfy. I always travel with two of my own pillows, but I didn’t need them. Being able to have your clothes washed daily was fabulous. I could have taken less clothes with me.

Meals Review

Could not fault anything. Perfect.

Crew & Guides Review

Every one of them were really good and knowledgeable. They all were excellent at there job and looked after us very well. The crew were very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot about where we were and the people who lived there and about the temples. So much entertainment for the whole time and lots of relaxing too.

Fellow Passengers Review

We all got on remarkably well and have made some lovely friends.

Itinerary Review

There was not a single thing we didn’t like. It was all perfect. We enjoyed everything from visiting the temples to shopping for souvenirs, we bought lots of silk scarves and silver.

Traveler Advice

Don’t pack loads of clothes, you don’t need them as you can buy beautiful clothes for an extremely affordable price. Maybe bring just one sparkly outfit in case you do want to get more dressy one evening. But smart casual is the order of the day. High heels and men’s evening shoes, don’t bother you won’t wear them. Cycling shorts and I like to wear gloves for kayaking and cycling. But not is necessary. A decent rain coat pack. Maybe one little cardigan or shawl, for the air condition. But jumpers etc. we did not need.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I've already recommended AdventureSmith to friends and family. There are quite a few that are going to look into booking trips, from the UK and abroad.

Featured in this Traveler Review

  • Aqua Mekong River Cruise
  • Aqua Mekong

National Geographic folks - the best. Crew on Jahan - super. Loved the little villages and the wonderful smiling people, especially the children. We least enjoyed Hue; group was tired, plane delays upon departure and one passenger said "I'm templed out." Overall, we learned a lot. These people are survivors!

They treat you so well. You expect the best and you get it.

This was a foodie trip. Endless wonderful food in interesting places. Truly an adventure, including the cooking class.

Jen was patient, warm and a wonderful listener. Michelle capably handled the unexpected, followed through on details.

You guys are always patient and helpful. Thanks for update on air changes. I had to tell expedition leader. You guys know from what you speak.

Be prepared for a different experience. Don't forget the antibiotics - different foods. Start with extension. This is a long, active trip, with lots of time in the air too. Plan time for rest when you get home.

  • Vietnam & Cambodia: Along the Mekong River, Including Angkor & Saigon
  • Lindblad Expeditions

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent. Also really enjoyed the trip to the active volcano and exploring the local shipbuilding village there. The trip to Rinca was short, I thought we could have been given the option to spend some more time there.

The ship was beautiful and kept in excellent shape by the crew. A memorable experience to sail on Katharina. My only complaint was that the sails were not able to be put up.

The chef on Katharina was INCREDIBLE. Loved the food and the variety. Rotation of meals over the week was also highly enjoyable.

Ari far exceeded our expectations. He knew so much about the local culture, the history of the area, the boat and the wildlife given his more than 20 years of experience. He also made sure that we had the best guides wherever we went. In addition, he was professional, friendly, approachable and organized.

We had excellent communication with our AdventureSmith contact Nick. He answered all of our questions in a timely fashion and we were well prepared for the trip.

  • Sailing Indonesia: Whale Sharks, Corals & Komodo Dragons

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. We most enjoyed Rinca to see Komodo dragons! The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

Great food and great crew!

Sea was a bit choppy the first couple of days, but not much you can do about that!

They helped us organize all our flights.  Even reached out to check in on us when there was an airport closure due to volcanic activity.

Great guide together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. The snorkeling was excellent; many fishes together with turtles, rays and manta rays. [We also enjoyed] seeing the Komodo dragons. The fellow travelers were a very nice diverse group who mixed well.

Cabins were small but quite adequate. Food was very good and the bar prices very reasonable.

The food was delicious and there was always a choice of fish, meat and non meat dishes.

Ari made the trip a great success. Very knowledgeable and experienced. Organized everything extremely well.

If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

10 best Asia cruises for a bucket-list trip

Buddhist monks walking inside Angkor Wat temple

It would be easy to argue that a cruise is the best way to see Asia, especially for first-time visitors to the region. Many cruise lines build robust itineraries designed to visit as many bucket-list destinations as possible across numerous countries. From the bustling streets of Tokyo and the tranquil waters of Vietnam's Ha Long Bay to the ancient temples in Cambodia and street food vendors of Singapore, cruising allows travelers to uncover the richness of Asia with ease and comfort.

Other cruise lines specialize in one specific area, such as the Yangtze or Mekong rivers or the highlights of Japan. These narrow-focus cruises provide a culturally enriching look at centuries-old traditions or access to hidden gems that traditional tourists might overlook.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Cruise lines with ships large and small operate throughout Asia and vary in their levels of luxury, offshore offerings and onboard amenities. Many travelers to Asia are looking for two-week or longer cruises to help make the most of a long trek across the Pacific; however, both shorter and longer itineraries abound to ensure there's an Asia cruise for every vacation length and budget.

Here are 10 of the best Asia cruises to consider.

Crystal's 16-night Singapore to Hong Kong cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

Over a little more than a two-week span in January 2025, passengers on Crystal's Singapore-to-Hong Kong itinerary will stop at some of the most popular ports in Asia. You'll first spend a few days in Thailand, where you can attend a meditation in Koh Samui or visit an elephant sanctuary where you'll feed the herd sugar cane and bananas before giving them a mud bath.

In Vietnam, you can ride on the back of a Vespa through the busy streets and markets of Hanoi, take a cooking class with a Vietnamese chef or kayak the crystal clear waters of Ha Long Bay. At the end of your cruise, enjoy a reflexology foot massage in Hong Kong after a traditional lunch in town. Rest up between days of sightseeing and activity with five days at sea.

Crystal truly excels at immersing passengers in cultural experiences with locals. Its carefully curated excursions take you to small villages where the locals are excited to shake your hand or invite you to help them prepare a regional dish using their traditional cooking methods.

Who should go: Luxury-focused travelers who appreciate fine dining, 24/7 butler service, attentive crew, spacious guest rooms and carefully curated excursions will find their home away from home aboard Crystal Symphony. With just 606 passengers on board, this ship is small enough to be intimate and easy to navigate, yet large enough to house all the desired amenities (including a pool, spa, walking track, fitness center, golf driving nets, putting green and tennis and pickleball courts).

MSC Cruises' 5-night round-trip cruise from Okinawa

southeast asia cruise ship

MSC Cruises ' short five-night Asia cruise to Japan and Taiwan is a great way to add a cruise to your vacation in Japan. Depart from Okinawa for Ishigaki, known for Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and the black pearl cultivation on Kabira Bay. The next stop, an overnight in Taipei, brings opportunities to see Taipei 101 Tower (once the world's tallest building, but now in fifth place) and ancient artifacts in the National Palace Museum.

Your final stop is Miyako Island, a picturesque spot covered by sugar cane fields. With no sea days, this itinerary is short and sweet. However, it doesn't skimp on ports of call.

Who should go: This five-night cruise in January 2025 on the 5,655-passenger MSC Bellissima is geared toward budget-conscious working adults looking for a shorter trip to Asia or folks who want to add a cruise to a longer land-based tour. For a VIP experience, upgrade to the MSC Yacht Club 's private sanctuary, which offers 24/7 butler service, exclusive venues (like a fine dining restaurant and a private sun deck), and even a personalized minibar and pillow menu.

Viking's 14-night Classic China and the Coast cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

For many, walking along the Great Wall is a dream. For passengers aboard Viking Yi Dun on the Classic China and the Coast cruise, it's a reality. Viking sets itself apart with a China-focused cruisetour that combines a five-night precruise land stay in Beijing and Xian with a nine-night cruise through the East and South China Seas. You can choose from multiple fall 2024 departures.

In Beijing, you can visit the Forbidden City and Great Wall before flying to Xian to admire the famous Terra Cotta Warriors archeological site. You can also take in Shanghai's impressive skyline and Garden City before sailing along China's coast. Notable stops include Zhoushan, where you can observe Buddhist culture, and Xiamen for a traditional tea ceremony.

Who should go: Viking appeals to cruisers who prefer a more inclusive pricing model. The line's fares include one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call; free Wi-Fi; beer and wine served with lunch and dinner; port fees and taxes; and 24/7 specialty coffees, teas and bottled water. The all-veranda ship, 930-passenger Viking Yi Dun is small enough to dock in places the larger ships cannot, offering a more up-close and personal experience without the crowds.

Royal Caribbean's 7-night Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

Royal Caribbean's Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo itinerary offers the best of Japan in a short span of time. The weeklong sailing in November 2025 begins and ends in Shanghai (the port is Baoshan), with two sea days and stops in the Japanese cities of Kobe, Kyoto (Osaka) and Tokyo.

In Kobe, visit the waterfalls of Mount Rokko, take a dip in a hot spring bath (called an onsen) and dine on the region's famous wagyu beef. Kyoto is known for its multicourse cuisine, shopping, a famous Zen garden, hidden temples and its Geisha district. No visit to Japan would be complete without a port call in Tokyo, where soaring skyscrapers and traditional shrines coexist harmoniously.

Who should go: Travelers with children, multigenerational families and anyone looking for a great deal on an Asian cruise should consider Royal Caribbean 's offerings. The 4,246-passenger Spectrum of the Seas has high-quality and tech-infused entertainment, myriad bars and dining options (including Sichuan Red, a specialty dining experience filled with Asian-inspired flavors), skydiving and surf simulators, a casino, a teen disco, multiple pools and a splash pad. Expect an international crowd on board, with guests from around the world.

Seabourn's 14-night Taiwan, South Korea and Japan's Spring Flowers cruise

Looking for a cruise that covers a lot of ground during a special time of year? Seabourn's Taiwan, South Korea and Japan's Spring Flowers itinerary begins in Hong Kong. It maximizes your time at sea, with 11 port stops in four countries over 14 days — and it all happens during cherry blossom season in March 2025. Expect views of Mount Fuji, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, tours of castles and temples, and delicious street food throughout your journey.

Highlights in Taiwan include visiting a Ming Dynasty temple on Penghu Island and seeing Taipei 101, the world's second-tallest skyscraper. During the Japanese ports, you can plan a visit to the Shureimon gate — a UNESCO Heritage Site in Okinawa's capital — or take a guided hike through Gangala Valley to see the ancient banyan trees. Finally, in South Korea, stop by the Dongmun traditional market and the Tongdosa Temple, which functions as a museum full of centuries-old relics.

Who should go: Retirees who love spoiling themselves with luxurious amenities will enjoy this two-week getaway. The 458-passenger Seabourn Quest has 229 suites, each with a spacious bathroom featuring a separate tub and shower. Guests can stay busy during sea days with the card room, plunge pool, whirlpool spas and fitness center. Seabourn 's all-inclusive model also covers gratuities as well as complimentary wines and spirits.

Princess Cruises' 13-night Circle Japan Fall Foliage cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

A line long devoted to offering Japan cruises, Princess Cruises truly delivers with this 13-day Circle Japan Fall Foliage itinerary in November 2025. Aside from one port stop in Busan, South Korea, the entire journey is focused on Japan. The sailing begins and ends in Tokyo, with 10 port stops in Hakodate, Niigata, Kanazawa, Sakaiminato, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Kochi, Kobe, Wakayama and Omaezaki.

Points of interest for excursion-planning purposes include Mount Fuji in Tokyo, the enchanting Kenroku-en Garden in Kanazawa, Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki, and the 1,200-year-old Koyasaan monastery complex — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Wakayama. Check out the Morning Market (where chefs purchase fresh fish to make sushi) in Hakodate and learn about rice's importance to sake production at a brewery in Niigata.

Who should go: Princess tends to attract retirees with its classic cruise style. The 2,710-passenger Diamond Princess has something for every guest, including Broadway-style shows after dinner and a number of restaurants. (Don't miss sashimi at Kai Sushi.) The Izumi Japanese Bath, the largest of its kind at sea, gives guests a traditional onsen experience, complete with hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas against a backdrop of the sea.

Victoria Cruise Line's 3-night Three Gorges Highlights cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

For those yearning to see the Yangtze — Asia's longest river and the third-longest in the world — Victoria Cruise Lines is a safe bet. It's the only American-managed cruise line on this river and has been in business for 30 years.

The Three Gorges Highlights sailing from Chongqing to Yichang departs daily from March through November each year and showcases daily life on the Yangtze as well as the area's extraordinary Three Gorges Dam project (China's new engineering marvel). You'll be awed by forest-covered mountains, sky-high cliffs and the world's largest ship lock with a ship lift. Shore excursions receive rave reviews from passengers, and the ships only hold about 200 passengers.

Who should go: Travelers looking for an exceptional add-on experience to their trip to China should consider this three-night sailing (a standard length for this experience, unlike the longer river cruises found in Europe). Victoria recommends booking through a travel agent who can reserve your cruise as part of a package tour offered by local tour operators. Expect lectures about the area's history and sights, cuisine focused on Chinese and Western flavors, onboard Tai Chi lessons and calligraphy demonstrations, and a cabin to fit every desired level of luxury.

Azamara's 20-night Treasure of Asia cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

You can see a lot of Asia in 20 days, especially if you're doing the Treasure of Asia Voyage with Azamara in March 2025. Beginning in Singapore, the ship will wind its way through Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand — that's eight countries checked off your bucket list in one trip.

Tour Manila on a bamboo bike, explore the silk factories of Hoi An, zoom through the canals of the Mekong delta on a speedboat outside Ho Chi Minh City and visit the Grand Palace in Bangkok by tuk-tuk.

Who should go: Cruisers who prefer a smaller ship (684 passengers) that still offers plenty of variety — such as seven restaurants and lounges, a swimming pool and a spa — will find Azamara Onward to be just right for their vacation. Azamara includes a couple of helpful extras in its fare: prepaid gratuities and free self-service laundry in addition to select standard spirits, international beers, and a changing selection of red and white wines by the glass.

Uniworld's 15-day Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia and The Mekong cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

Travelers with their hearts set on exploring the mighty Mekong River — the 12th longest in the world, which runs through Southwest China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Southern Vietnam — should put Uniworld Boutique River Cruises at the top of their list. The line offers Mekong River sailings throughout 2024 and 2025, which it packages together with pre- and postcruise land-based stays in Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap and Hanoi.

The Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia and The Mekong itinerary starts with a two-night stay in Ho Chi Minh City ahead of embarking on the 68-passenger Mekong Jewel. During the seven-night Mekong River cruise, guests will be able to witness the daily routines of villagers, visit local temples and discover how Khmer scarves are made. The cruise is followed by three nights in Siem Reap, allowing guests to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. The adventure ends with a three-night stay in Hanoi, where passengers can tour the bustling streets and vibrant markets of Vietnam's capital.

Who should go: Uniworld thoughtfully packages its river cruises with a land-based tour for travelers who want a seamless and all-inclusive experience. This cruise includes meals, complimentary drinks, 13 excursions, and accommodations on the ship and in city hotels. It also includes ground transfers and gratuities.

Celebrity's 12-night Bali, Malaysia & Thailand Holiday cruise

southeast asia cruise ship

Consider this Bali, Malaysia & Thailand Holiday sailing with Celebrity Cruises to be your ticket to an "Eat, Pray, Love" moment in your life. Embarkation takes place in Bali, but you'll visit additional ports in Indonesia for a taste of all this country has to offer.

From the breathtaking Tiu Kelep waterfalls and towering volcanoes to the many wild tropical bird specials and reef fish in West Bali National Park, you'll discover so much about this region and perhaps a bit about yourself, too. Next up are stops in Malaysia, including an overnight stay in Penang (known for its beaches, Buddhist temples and exquisite butterfly farm). The 12-night trip wraps up with an overnight in Phuket, Thailand, allowing enough time to explore the tropical forests, palm-lined coves and vibrant nightlife before ending in Singapore.

Who should go: Celebrity is an excellent choice for cruisers who want a slightly elevated experience without dipping too much further into their wallets. This December 2025 sailing on the 2,218-passenger Celebrity Millennium is likely to attract anyone who wants to spend their winter holidays in a tropical locale beyond the more typical Caribbean adventures. This ship was revamped in 2019, so take advantage of the adults-only solarium, reimagined restaurants and lounges and the redesigned spa (not to mention Starlink for high-speed connectivity).

The 27-mile passage that is Southeast Asia's answer to the Suez canal

T he Thai Canal, also known as the Kra Canal or Kra Isthmus Canal, is a significant proposal aimed at transforming Southeast Asian maritime trade routes.

This ambitious project would connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea, drastically reducing travel distances by bypassing the heavily trafficked Strait of Malacca.

The concept of the Kra Canal is not new. It dates back to 1677 when Thai King Narai first considered a waterway to link Songkhla and what is now Myanmar.

Although early attempts to survey and construct the canal, including efforts in 1793 and the 19th century by the British East India Company, were deemed impractical due to technological limitations, the idea persisted.

In the late 19th century, Ferdinand de Lesseps, the engineer behind the Suez Canal, showed interest, but political agreements and colonial interests prevented progress.

Modern plans for the canal have varied in scope and route. The most prominent proposal as of 2015 suggested a 102-kilometer canal that is 400 meters wide and 25 meters deep, with potential routes cutting through regions such as Ranong and Chumphon or Surat Thani and Phang Nga. These routes aim to exploit the narrowest and most feasible parts of the Kra Isthmus.

Despite the apparent economic and strategic benefits, including reducing oil shipment distances to Japan and China by 1,200 kilometers, the project has faced numerous obstacles. High costs, environmental concerns, and geopolitical implications have all been significant barriers.

In 2018, Thailand's Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha stated the canal was not a priority for the government. However, in January 2020, the Thai House of Representatives initiated a committee to re-examine the project.

If ever built, the Kra Canal would have a transformative impact on regional trade. By providing an alternative to the Strait of Malacca, the canal could cut two to three days off shipping times between the South China Sea and the Andaman Sea, offering substantial fuel savings for large vessels.

The Strait of Malacca, currently the world's busiest shipping route, is projected to handle 140,000 vessels by 2025. The Thai Canal would alleviate this congestion, enhancing Thailand's position as a global shipping hub.

The strategic significance of the Kra Isthmus has been recognized for centuries. In 1946, post- World War Two treaties between Thailand and the United Kingdom included clauses preventing the canal's construction without British consent, highlighting the canal's geopolitical importance.

Modern analysis suggests that the canal could shift the balance of maritime trade and military presence in the region, particularly affecting ports in Malaysia and Singapore, which could see a decline in shipping traffic.
