3. San Antonio

San Antonio is steeped in history and Spanish colonial heritage. Explore the legendary Alamo and stroll along the scenic River Walk, lined with shops, restaurants, and bars.

And, here’s my favorite part, If you are traveling with family, don’t miss Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World San Antonio , two exciting theme parks. This attraction somehow resembles to Grand Canyon National Park quite often.

The next one is El Paso. You can rest in there and savor its Tex-Mex cuisine. Enchiladas, tacos, and tamales await foodies. Plus, you are surrounded by stunning desert landscapes.

5. Franklin Mountains State Park

Franklin Mountains State Park is a natural wonderland. Admire the desert landscapes, spot over 100 bird species, and hike the trails in the Tom Mays Unit for picturesque city and mountain views. All in all, I would suggest you don’t miss out on the national park . And, if you are lucky, you can spot the beautiful mule deer.

6. Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument

The next stop will be Organ Mountains. You can check out the Desert Peaks National Monument , where you can enjoy breathtaking desert vistas and spot pronghorn antelope, desert bighorn sheep, and various bird species. This attraction seems much like the Petrified Forest National Park .

7. Saguaro National Parks

Marvel at the striking desert scenery and towering saguaro cacti in Saguaro National Park. Take a scenic drive or hike the trails for a closer look. Don’t forget to visit the Cactus National Park garden inside Saguaro National Park .

Phoenix beckons with its sunshine, cultural attractions, and diverse food scene. The Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum offer cultural experiences, while the city’s food scene is a fusion of New Mexico and American flavors. Golf enthusiasts will find paradise here with over 200 golf courses.

9. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park , your final destination, offers a landscape like no other. Towering Joshua trees and colossal rock formations await your exploration. At night, the national parks transform into a stargazer’s paradise. From vibrant cities like Miami to pristine beaches like Siesta Beach and everything in between, Florida has a variety of landscapes and adventures. And hey, why listen to me? Well, I’ve explored lots of places in this beautiful state as a former resident and can offer some insider tips and hidden gems. 

Ready? Let’s dive into this 7 day Florida road trip itinerary through the Sunshine State!

Florida Road Trip 1 Week Itinerary

While it’s (surprisingly) difficult to plan a Florida road trip 1 week itinerary, I’ll do my best to give you some great ideas to help you plan and find what’s best for you. You’ll be starting out in Miami, heading to the Gulf Coast, central Florida and then back to Miami. 

Note: This itinerary assumes you’ll be flying into Miami International Airport (MIA) and that you’ll be driving from there. (As an alternative, you can also reach Miami by bus .)

Day 1 – Miami

Welcome to the vibrant city of Miami, where the sun always shines and the energy is contagious! Your road trip is about to kick off with a bang as we dive headfirst into the captivating charms of the Magic City. 

Explore Miami Beach

Miami Beach is a must-visit destination in Miami. Start your day right with an incredible breakfast at The Front Porch Café, known for its mouth watering pancakes and cozy beachfront vibes. 

The Miami Beach area is famous for its white-sand beaches, clear waters, and Art Deco architecture. Take a stroll along Ocean Drive and admire the colorful buildings, or rent a bike and explore the area on two wheels. You can also rent a beach chair and umbrella and soak up some sun on the beach.

Explore Little Havana

Make sure to swing by Little Havana, a vibrant neighborhood that exudes the spirit of Cuba. Stroll along Calle Ocho, inhale the aroma of freshly rolled cigars, and savor a strong cup of Cuban coffee. Immerse yourself in the rhythmic beats of salsa music and witness the passionate art of salsa dancing. It’s a sensory experience you won’t want to miss!

For a delicious lunch, head over to Versailles, an iconic Cuban restaurant in Little Havana, where you can savor authentic dishes like Ropa Vieja and mouth watering Medianoche sandwiches. 

Check out Wynwood Walls

Wynwood Walls is an outdoor art gallery that features colorful murals and graffiti art. The area is home to many art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Take a stroll around the area and admire the vibrant street art. You can also grab a bite to eat at one of the many food trucks in the area (if you haven’t eaten already).

Enjoy the Nightlife

When dinner time rolls around, make your way to Joe’s Stone Crab, a Miami restaurant famous for its heavenly seafood and lively atmosphere.

Miami is known for its vibrant nightlife. Head to South Beach and party the night away or enjoy a night out at one of the many clubs or bars. You could also check out a rooftop bar in downtown Miami and enjoy a drink with a view (or even a view from a boat ).

That’s it for day one in Miami! Get some rest and get ready for another exciting day on your Florida road trip.

Day 2 – The Everglades

You wake up early on Day 2 of your Florida road trip excited because you’re going to explore the Everglades! The park is located just a short drive from Miami, making it an easy trip.

It’s time to trade the cityscape for a little bit of untamed wilderness. You’ll be driving along the Tamiami Trail since you’ll head to Naples later today while stopping off to explore parts of the Everglades.

Note: You won’t have a chance to see all of the amazing things in this National Park, but you’ll still have a chance to see quite a bit. However, if you’re up for a 2+ hour detour to head to the official Park, I’d say do it! Otherwise, follow this itinerary for a more direct route.

Take an Airboat Tour

Your day will kick off with an adrenaline-pumping airboat tour through the heart of the Everglades. You’ll zip across the shimmering sawgrass prairies on the lookout for alligators lurking beneath the surface and colorful birds soaring above. Get ready for a wild ride that will leave you with plenty of memories.

Pro-Tip: Morning or dusk is a great time to look for alligators.

Your airboat tour should take about an hour or so and afterwards it’s time to grab some lunch. Coopertown Airboat tour not only has a great tour of the Everglades but also a restaurant where you can try anything from alligator bites to frog legs!

Shark Valley Visitor Center

After lunch and your airboat tour, head to Shark Valley to see the park’s famous observation tower . The tower offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and you might even spot a few alligators out sunbathing below.

While at Shark Valley, there’s a 15 mile trail to explore via bikes or by a tram tour. This trail offers great views of the Everglades and park’s diverse habitats, including sawgrass marshes, cypress swamps, and hardwood hammocks.

Drive Scenic Loop Road

Get ready for a scenic and adventurous drive along Loop Road in Big Cypress National Preserve—it’s an absolute gem for this itinerary! This scenic route (Route 94) will take you deep into the heart of the Everglades. 

You’ll navigate the winding road and catch plenty of alligators sunbathing near the roadside. With every twist and turn, you’ll find new landscapes—vast sawgrass marshes, towering cypress trees, and, of course, plenty of wildlife. 

Quick note: this is a dirt road so make sure your car is up for this!

Drive to Naples & Watch the Sunset

As the day draws to a close, it’s time to make your way to the charming coastal city of Naples. You’ll continue to take the Tamiami Trail until you get to Naples. From there, you can either check in to your hotel or head out to the famous Naples Pier to catch the sunset and a quick dinner.

Day 3 – Naples

On day three of your 1 week Florida road trip, you’ll be exploring the beautiful Gulf Coast city of Naples. Naples is known for its beaches, high end shopping, and world class golf courses, so get ready for an exciting day!

Enjoy your morning in the sun

Kickstart your day with a quick breakfast or a coffee pick-me-up. Then, hit the beach (Vanderbilt Beach is a nice spot) for some sunshine or, if you’re feeling adventurous, opt for a more active way to spend the morning. Go swimming, take a stroll along the shore, go paddle boarding or kayaking to explore the waters nearby.

Visit the Highlights in Naples

After your morning in the sun, grab some lunch and then explore one of Naples’ highlights – either the Naples Botanical Garden or the Naples Zoo.

The Naples Botanical Garden is a truly stunning place to visit with plenty of walking trails and wildlife, plus plenty of tropical plants and beautiful blooms to enjoy. If you opt for the zoo, you’ll find a variety of different animals (giraffes are a big hit!) and it’s a great family friendly activity for the afternoon.

Nearby Marco Island is also a great place to explore if you have the time. There are two beautiful public beaches there. Plus, it’s a beautiful island with plenty of great shelling opportunities if you want to hunt for treasures like sand dollars or starfish.

Explore Fifth Avenue South

Head to the popular Fifth Avenue South , about a mile in distance, that has a great selection of shops, bars, and restaurants to explore. This area is the picture of classy and Old World charm. Plus, it’s Naples’ top shopping spot. 

A popular spot for dinner and drinks in Naples is Bar Tulia 5th Ave. Enjoy the lively atmosphere with an incredible cocktail and pair it with some of the best food, like the Truffle pizza or pasta dishes.

Depending on when you go to dinner, you might have a chance to catch the sunset again. Head to a spot for drinks on the patio to watch the sunset (a popular spot is the Sand Bar in the Ritz Carlton) or head back to the Naples Pier to catch one more incredible sunset here.

After a full day out in the sun and then spending the evening eating incredible food in Naples, it’s time for some much needed rest. Start prepping for Day 4 in Siesta Key as you continue your road trip adventure!

Day 4 – Siesta Key

Good morning, beach lovers! Today, we’re off to stunning Siesta Key—one of Florida’s most breathtaking coastal destinations. 

The ride from Naples to Siesta Key is just under two hours. You’ll take Golden Gate Parkway east and then 75N most of the way till you get to Route 72 or Clark Rd, where you’ll take that west to Siesta Key. You’ll cross over the Stickney Point Bascule Bridge, and then you’ll have arrived! 

Head to the Beach!

Kick off the day with a solid breakfast at Sun Garden Café for mouthwatering eggs benedict, chicken and waffles, omelets, and plenty more.

From here, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got your swimsuits on, because it’s time to hit the beach. Siesta Key Beach is often rated the #1 Beach in the USA! And you’ll see why when you’re there. Imagine incredibly soft, white sand and crystal-clear blue turquoise waters. You’ll definitely want to make sure you don’t miss this one, so make sure to get there early for parking! 

This beach is the perfect place to start your day whether it’s a stroll along the shore, swimming in the easy waves or soaking up the sun from the sand. With concession stands, restrooms and all the best kinds of amenities, you can easily spend the morning into the afternoon here. 

Explore Siesta Key Village

Now it’s time to explore the vibrant Siesta Key Village. This charming area is packed with a little bit of everything from boutiques and local shops to cozy cafés just begging to be explored. Hunt for unique treasures or souvenirs. When hunger strikes, Siesta Key Oyster Bar is a great place to stop and offers fresh seafood, sandwiches, and of course, oysters!

If you’re not into shopping, you could also use the afternoon to explore the Point of Rocks—a hidden gem that is absolutely perfect for snorkeling. Head into those clear waters and you’ll be amazed by the colorful marine life and mesmerizing underwater scenery.

Dinner, Drinks & Fun

As the sun begins to set, it’s time to find yourself a cozy spot on the beach (if you didn’t head to the Village yet) to relax and witness the incredible sunset.

After the sunset, or if you’re already in the Village area, you’ll gear up for an evening filled with a casual dinner and live music. Treat yourself to incredible seafood at The Hub Baja Grill or sip on tropical drinks at Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar. And hey, don’t forget to let loose and dance to some awesome live music at the Beach Club.

That’s a wrap for the day in Siesta Key! Sadly, you don’t have enough time to visit one of my other favorites nearby, Anna Maria Island , but you can add that one in for the next time you visit. You’ll be headed to the St. Pete and Tampa area on Day 5 so rest up and get excited to explore the Tampa Bay area!

Day 5 – Tampa & St. Pete

On the fifth day of your Florida road trip, you will explore the vibrant cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg. These two cities are located just a short drive away from each other, making it easy enough to explore both in one day.

From Siesta Key you’ll leave over the Siesta Key North Bridge, take State Highway 758 east until you get to 75N. You’ll be on 75N for a little under an hour and you’ll take exit 8 for the Selmon Expressway that leads to Tampa. The drive is a little over an hour total.

Breakfast & The Riverwalk

Start your day in Tampa by grabbing breakfast at Oxford Exchange, one of my favorite places in Tampa . This is a restaurant, gift store, coffee shop, and much more all in one! It’s a great way to start the day, and it’s about a 10-ish minute walk from the Tampa RiverWalk area. 

After breakfast you’ll head to the Riverwalk, a scenic trail that runs along the Hillsborough River. You can choose to walk this path or rent bikes, whatever you’re feeling up to. There’s lots to see here along the way with plenty of great views. Walk to Armature Works which is along the northern end of the Riverwalk. This is a great place to grab drinks or food before you head to St. Pete.

Explore the St. Pete Area

After exploring Tampa, head to St. Pete, which is known for its beautiful beaches and lively arts scene. Visit the Salvador Dali Museum, which houses the largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Spain. The museum is located in downtown St. Petersburg and is a must-see for art lovers.

You can also walk along the St. Pete Pier, a scenic boardwalk that offers stunning views from the water with plenty of places to eat and drink and explore.

Dinner & Drinks by the Water

In the evening, head about 20 minutes west to the St. Pete Beach area on the main road, Gulf Blvd. This area is known for its restaurants and nightlife. Grab dinner and drinks at Bongos Beach Bar & Grille, a great spot where you can sit outside in the sand with your dinner and watch the sunset on the beach. 

Day 5 has officially wrapped up, and you’ll be on your way to Orlando tomorrow so prepare for another long but exciting day ahead! 

Day 6 – Orlando

Visiting a theme park in Orlando on the sixth day of your Florida road trip is an exciting way to cap off the second to last day of your journey! I highly recommend waking up as early as possible for today since you’ll be trying to cram a lot into one day.

From Tampa to Orlando, you’ll take I-275 N to I-4 E which you’ll be on for most of the way there. The trip should take you about an hour and a half, but that’s without traffic. 

To make the most of your one day in Orlando, consider purchasing an early entry pass or a pass for the shorter lines. I also only recommend choosing only one park to explore as that will be more than enough for the day (and then some!) Make a list of the must-ride or must-see places for the day, since it’ll go by quickly.

Head to a Theme Park

I would suggest grabbing a quick breakfast and coffee at your hotel before you head out (it’s cheaper that way before you head to the parks!). 

From there, I’d recommend heading to and spending the day at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, or Islands of Adventure.

Magic Kingdom is probably the most popular of all of the Disney Parks, Universal Studios is a great option if you’re traveling with kids, and Islands of Adventure is a great option for adults (it’s actually my favorite!)

Lunch & Final Rides

In the afternoon, you’ll grab lunch at whichever park you chose for the day. Make sure you’re referencing your list of must-rides or must-sees. Time flies in a theme park with the long lines and constant walking from one place to another. Prioritize any rides you haven’t yet gotten to since you’re in the final stretch of the day.

Dinner nearby the Park

Depending on which park you chose for the day, closing time might be looming around the corner. This is a great time to head to a spot nearby for dinner. Depending on when your flight is the next day, this could actually be your final dinner of the trip!

If you explored Disney, head to Disney Springs and check out Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant or STK Orlando. If you went to Universal, head to CityWalk and try out VIVO Italian Kitchen or Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food.

Both of these spots have great restaurants, shops and plenty of other things to do, so take your time and enjoy your night.

That’s a wrap for Orlando. It went by pretty quickly, didn’t it? It’s time to check into your hotel and rest up for your next and final day of your 1 week road trip in Florida.

Day 7 – Space Coast & Drive back to Miami

On your last day of the road trip, you’ll be visiting the Space Coast and then heading back to Miami. It’ll be a full day, so I recommend waking up early for it. 

From Orlando, you’ll take 408 E to 50 E, and then 405 to cross the NASA Causeway Bridge to the Kennedy Space Center.

Explore the Kennedy Space Center

Start the day early with a quick breakfast before getting on the road. Check out Easy Luck Coffee & Bodega or Moma’s Cafe, both of which you can’t go wrong with!

Your first stop will be the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida, which is almost an hour away from Orlando by car.

The Space Center opens around 9am, and you’ll want to get there as early as possible to avoid crowds. You’ll spend the morning into the afternoon exploring the Kennedy Space Center . There’s lots to do here so you’ll want to make a list of your top 3 or 4 things to do upfront. A few examples to get you started include the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, the Rocket Garden, and the Apollo 8 firing room. 

Cocoa Beach & Drive Back to Miami

Grab lunch at the Orbit Cafe, which offers a decent variety of options or the Rocket Garden Cafe that overlooks the Rocket Garden.

After a few hours at the Space Center, it’s time to get back on the road and head to nearby Cocoa Beach. It won’t be a long visit, but you can spend some time relaxing on the beach, swimming, or walking around at this world-famous beach. You can even swap out lunch at the Kennedy Space Center for lunch here on the Cocoa Beach Pier (better & cheaper food, in my opinion).

It’s an almost 4 hour trip back to Miami (without traffic) so you’ll want to make sure you leave enough time for the drive back, whether checking into your hotel or heading to the airport! Make sure you factor that into your plans for the afternoon. You unfortunately won’t have a lot of time to make stops on your drive back to Miami.

You’ll take A1A S and FL-404 W to I-95 S, and from there, you’ll be on I-95 S for most of the way back to Miami.

Once you’re back in Miami, check into your hotel for the night or head to the rental car drop off and the airport for your flight.

If you’re staying for the night, you might be exhausted from the week and want to grab takeout or order in for dinner at the hotel. Totally understandable. If you’re still up for a dinner out on your last night, I’d recommend checking out the Taco Stand in Wynwood or the Lobster Shack in Miami Beach for a casual dinner.

1. San Diego, California

Sunny San Diego lies magnificently on the Californian coast. It’s not called America’s Finest City for nothing. Great weather around the year creates the laid-back atmosphere that you appreciate especially at the start or end of a big trip.

Grasp the opportunity and say hello to the beach bum in you and visit one of San Diego’s beaches. But head over to Balboa Park before that tan gets the best of you.

Pick a favorite beach in San Diego

As San Diego has a long shoreline along the Californian coast it’s not hard to find a great beach to spend the day on when you’re about to begin your road trip. A favorite beach is Coronado Beach where scenes in the classic movie “Some Like It Hot” with Marilyn Monroe were filmed.

But there are many other great options if you don’t want to walk in the footsteps of Marilyn. To only name a few, other good options are Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Imperial Beach, Ocean Beach, Moonlight Beach, Del Mar City Beach and Jolla Shores. So find that beach bum in you and spend some relaxing time at the Pacific Ocean before the great southern road trip adventure starts.

Balboa Park in San Diego is the crown jewel of the city. It spreads out over 1,200 acres (5 square kilometres) and hosts the zoo, museums, gardens, architecture, restaurants, cafés and other attraction venues.

It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon, but with all the things to do in the park you could easily spend a long weekend there too. While San Diego Zoo is the name that stands out among all the things to do in Balboa Park, to wander around without a real plan ahead of you and take it as it comes could be as rewarding.

2. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

• Driving time: 5.5 h

It’s time to leave California and continue into the state of Arizona. In Saguaro National Park you find cacti higher than houses.

The environment in Saguaro National Park is just breathtaking. Its nature reminds you of a good old cowboy movie. And the famous and enormous saguaro cacti that rise with authority towards the sky is the highlight of the park.

These giant tree-like cacti can become more than 50 feet (15 m) tall, which makes them the largest cactus species in the United States.

A very special feature of Saguaro National Park is that the park is divided into two separate sections, also called districts. Tucson Mountain District is on the western end and Rincon Mountain District on the eastern end of Tucson. Both districts are beautiful to visit and you find the saguaro cactus in both.

Additional stop: Grand Canyon is without a doubt the most famous national park in Arizona. But Grand Canyon is located too far north for it to be included on this ultimate southern states road trip route from California to Florida. Still, feel free to add Grand Canyon to the itinerary if you don’t mind the detour.

3. White Sands National Park, New Mexico

• Driving distance : 346 mi / 557 km
• Driving time : 5 h

The next stop on the southern itinerary from San Diego to Florida is neither as famous as Grand Canyon or Yellowstone. But that doesn’t make it less spectacular. White Sands National Park is a great destination for its own reasons.

You find White Sands National Park in Tularosa Basin in New Mexico. What makes it so spectacular is that it consists of enormous white sand dunes. The glistening sand dunes that cover about 275 square miles (712 square kilometres) create the world’s largest gypsum dunefield.

It could be hard to grasp as we now are so far from the ocean, but once White Sands was the bottom of the sea. Nowadays the area is not at all as wet as it once was. But the dunes aren’t as soft all the way through as they appear. And you can pretty easily climb the dunes as they are rather wet beneath the surface.

Scenic drives and hiking are fun and popular things to do in White Sands National Park. But an even more unique activity is to try some New Mexico sledding. The sandy dunes not only resemble snow by their looks, they also behave like snow dunes and are great for sledding.

The location of White Sands has contributed to the fact that it doesn’t get too much attention, and that people still don’t go even when the park does get some headlines. But for a road trip like this one White Sands National Park is the perfect place to stop at. The dunes are incredible and what’s more fun than to see something that’s off the beaten track?

Additional stop: On the way from White Sands to Carlsbad Caverns you pass by another national park. Guadalupe Mountains National Park offers rugged mountain peaks and dramatic vistas. The park is called the top of Texas as it encompasses the state’s four tallest mountain tops. You find options for where to stay near Guadalupe Mountains along the California to Florida route in El Paso and Carlsbad.

4. Carlsbad Caverns NP, New Mexico

• Driving distance : 181 mi / 291 km
• Driving time : 3.5 h

When you think of New Mexico it’s easy to think that it’s warm and sunny. Well, Carlsbad Caverns is definitely not warm or sunny — it’s time to go underground.

Carlsbad Caverns is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, inside the Guadalupe Mountains. Even though Carlsbad Caverns National Park consists of more than 119 impressive caves there’s clearly one that gets most of the visitors.

It’s called the Big Room but to just call it a big room is a hefty understatement. The limestone chamber is bigger than six football fields with its 4000 feet (1 220 m) length, 625 feet (191 m) width and 255 feet (78 m) height. And the beautiful rock formations and sculptures take your breath away.

The most exciting way to enter the Big Room is to take the Natural Entrance Trail. It takes you 750 feet (229 m) down into the depths of the earth. In the Big Room you can wander around yourself and try to take in the immense cave.

But remember that it’s rather cold down there. Make sure that you bring a jacket and long pants to fully appreciate the wonder of the world that Carlsbad Caverns is.

5. Big Bend National Park, Texas

• Driving time : 4 h

A huge contrast to the dark and cool underground environment in Carlsbad Caverns is Big Bend National Park in southwestern Texas. The park is the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert in the US and one of the best southern road trip stops.

Big Bend National Park was named after the shape of a large bend in Rio Grande. In the isolated, wild and often hot corner of the US Rio Grande tranquilly passes through. The river carves majestic canyons and creates bends as it flows through the dry landscape.

The secluded Big Bend National Park shares border with Mexico for as much as 118 miles (190 km) and Rio Grande is what separates the two countries. Rio Grande creates a natural international border and the land south of the river lies within Mexican territory.

Along Rio Grande the elevation is less than 1,800 feet (549 m) but in the majestic Chisos Mountains you reach almost 8,000 feet (2438 m). The varying altitude contributes to the diversity in vegetation and wildlife that you find in the park.

But in general Big Bend National Park is a hot place to visit. The extreme temperatures make summer a demanding time to explore the beautiful park. Therefore the less hot months of the year is the best time to visit Big Bend.

6. San Antonio, Texas

• Driving time : 6 h

Following awe-inspiring natural treasures it’s now time to see what Texas great cities have to offer.

The itinerary’s first of two Texas cities is San Antonio. In San Antonio you can indulge in some of the most important historic areas of Texas and live your best life at the River Walk. It’s certainly very easy to fall in love with this Texas beauty.

Uncover a city rich in history

San Antonio is a great place for sight-seeing and learning about the past. Of all the historic sites in San Antonio, the Alamo Mission is the one that especially stands out.

Alamo was built by the Spanish as a mission in 1718, but later that century it was secularized and abandoned. Instead of a mission it got a role as a military fortress.

And the fortress would be the scene of one of the most famous battles in the history of America. At the place the Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836.

A small force with soldiers entrenched themselves in the fortress when they were attacked by a much larger Mexican army. Even though the defenders were outnumbered and lost the battle, the battle stands out as one of the defining moments of the Texas Revolution.

Feel the pleasant vibe of the River Walk

The River Walk in San Antonio is a true sanctuary in the heart of the busy city. Some call it the American Venice for the beautiful water passages that San Antonio River forms. And the area is full of dining opportunities, shopping, sight-seeing and other fun things to do as you visit.

One of the best ways to beautifully and effectively see what the River Walk is all about is to take a narrated boat tour on the river. That way you can see what the area is all about and spot your favorite areas along the walk.

For dinner it’s a good idea to try one of the cozy restaurants just at the riverside, where you can sit down for an al fresco meal in the tranquil setting. The cypresses and oaks along the river create some often well-needed shade in the hot Texan climate.

For the history buff there’s always something to indulge in at the River Walk too. The Alamo is just steps away but so are other missions and a lot more to explore when you visit on the San Diego to Florida drive.

Additional stop: To extend the road trip with more Texas stops you can continue on the ultimate Gulf Coast road trip . The coastal route takes you from the southern tip of South Padre Island all the way along the US Gulf Coast to the quirky Florida Keys .

7. Houston, Texas

• Driving distance : 197 mi / 317 km
• Driving time : 3 h

From one big city in Texas to another, Houston is next up. It’s a fun and interesting destination on the optimal southern road trip itinerary. The city is dynamic, lively and has first-class attractions to offer.

The biggest must-see when you visit Houston is the Johnson Space Center. It has a large museum with a great variety of exhibitions about space and space travel, which is both educating and entertaining.

And it has NASA tram tours running that take you to some of the best spots of the space center. How about the chance to see Rocket Park with a real huge rocket, the astronaut training facility or maybe most iconically the Apollo Mission Control Center?

After a day at the space center it’s perfect to return to the central part of Houston and hang out in Hermann Park. In Hermann Park you find beautiful trails, amazing picnic spots and you can even take a cute and idyllic train ride around the park. It’s no wonder that the Houstonians love this place.

8. New Orleans, Louisiana

When you have driven all the way from San Diego to New Orleans it’s really time to let loose and enjoy yourself. New Orleans, the Big Easy or just NOLA is known to appreciate all the temptations and desires of life. As the old NOLA saying goes “Laissez les bons temps rouler”, or in English “Let the good times roll”.

To make the most of the time in New Orleans, the famous French Quarter with its unique ambience is the best place to stay in or at least close to. The atmosphere in the French Quarter is unique and you have most New Orleans things to do near or easily reachable from there.

In the French Quarter you find French homes from the 18th century with wrought-iron balconies. Them together with the street signs in French, smell of Creole and Cajun food and vibrant street performers could make you think you have arrived to a different country.

Bourbon Street is always lively and a paradise if you are in the mood to wet your throat, while Royal Street has plenty of antique shops just one street away. The area is compact and a perfect place to stretch your legs.

A short distance away from Royal Street you find Jackson Square with the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral. The beautiful and fairy-tale like cathedral could make you think you’re already at Disney in Orlando.

9. Pensacola Beach, Florida

• Driving distance : 209 mi / 336 km

It’s time for the final state Florida on the itinerary. And the first Floridian stop out of three on the itinerary from San Diego to Miami is the perfect beach destination.

Pensacola Beach sits on Santa Rosa Island in the Florida Panhandle. There you find one of the most beautiful beaches in America. People come back year after year for the white dunes, clear water and relaxing ambience in Pensacola Beach.

Still Pensacola Beach often gets a bit overlooked because it’s rather far away from a major city. Nevertheless, the beach is incredible and a fantastic stop on your southern states road trip.

As a bonus there are many more fun things to do than just lazing on the beach. An excellent activity if you would like to add some brick and stone into the mixture is to check out the old military fortress Fort Pickens.

Fort Pickens sits on the western end of Santa Rosa Island. A short and scenic drive away from the center of Pensacola Beach you can learn more about the history of the fort and the important function it once played. But the Fort Pickens area is also a great place to just unwind and enjoy the beautiful surroundings after a long beach day.

10. Orlando, Florida

The route across the US continues southeast through Florida. Now it’s time for all your childhood dreams to come true, or at least some of them. The next stop is the home of Disney World, Orlando.

Planned in the 1960s and opened up in 1971, Disney has become synonymous with Orlando. Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Sea World are other thrill-seeking theme parks that call Orlando their home.

In Orlando you certainly can create memories, or at least fun pictures, that last for a life-time. Which favorite Disney character do you hope to run into when you visit?

But the city is not exclusively about the theme parks. Orlando also offers great dining and shopping opportunities for days off the theme parks when visiting on the San Diego to Miami road trip. So Orlando is certainly a road trip stop that delivers the entire package.

11. Miami, Florida

• Driving time: 3.5 h

Well done, you made it the whole way across the continent on the southern road trip route from San Diego to Miami. A drive to the famous Ocean Drive and South Beach makes up for a truly iconic finish to an unforgettable road trip.

Miami offers amazing beach life and all the places you need for a fun night out. But that’s only a slice of what the city has to offer.

Little Havana with its Cuban heritage and Wynwood most well-known for incredible street art are places not to miss. Both are great neighborhoods to visit when you want to explore past Ocean Drive and South Beach.

And if you feel brave enough you can make a day trip out to Everglades National Park and pay a visit to the home of the alligators. Just make sure that you keep at a safe distance as the Everglades locals could be a bit bitey.

One of the best Florida road trips from Orlando has to be to get up close and personal to the space shuttle Atlantis at the famous Kennedy Space Center , just one hour outside of Orlando.

The shuttle launches may have stopped, but the Space Center is still an excellent, unforgettable experience that gives you a taste of what an astronaut’s life is like and gives you important insight into the ongoing work of the space program in the USA. No matter if you are only moderately passionate about science and space, or an uncompromising sci-fi enthusiast, you can’t help but be impressed by a  visit to the Space Centre and the sheer scale of the endeavors taken to further humanity here.

Begin at the Early Space Exploration museum to get a quick summary, then head out on the 90-minute bus tour to the Apollo / Saturn V Center and conclude at the spectacular new Atlantis museum, in which you can walk under the scorched fuselage of a spacecraft that flew on 33 flights to space. 

Located on the Atlantic Coast and adjacent to the wind-swept beaches of Canaveral National Seashore,  an all-day immersion in US space history will have you wanting to head to the stars yourself.

While Tampa is often overlooked as a sprawling business hub, there is actually a lot on offer here for a day or two! With the world-class Florida Aquarium , plenty of urban green spaces, great museums, a thriving food scene – and yes, access to Florida’s Gold Coast – this is one stylish city.

The newly opened Riverwalk is not to be missed, nor is Florida’s best grouper sandwiches at Big Rays Fish Camp – and if you’re in town around Halloween, the Chamber of Terror is an amazing haunted boat attraction on a real US navy boat. Another spot that is one of the top places to road trip to in Florida is Jacksonville , the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States, — and the most populated in Florida. But don’t be put off by the vast size or somewhat isolated position just 25 miles south of the Georgia state line, Jacksonville is a treasure trove of activities and one of the most underrated things to do in Florida.

Stretching across both sides of the St. Johns River (and with two more meandering waterways now located entirely within Jacksonville), this is a city of spanning bridges, twinkling city lights reflecting on the water and numerous lookout points to enjoy the unusual cityscape. 

While your first impressions of high-rise towers and corporate head offices might put you off, Jacksonville has the soul of a southern belle if you look deeper. A good place to start is wandering its 22 miles of beaches,  extensive park systems, or historic neighborhoods. There are plenty of things to do with curious museums, a lauded street art scene, coastal cuisine, the hoppy craft beer scene, and so much more! 

Though the city is gigantic, most places of interest are clustered along with the St Johns River’s narrowest point around the downtown and the historic Five Points and San Marco neighborhoods (filled with bistros, boutiques, and restaurants).

Or the beach. Jax, as locals call it, is all about waterworks, breweries, and history. If you only have time to stop briefly, the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens is absolutely not-to-be-missed. The Southbank Riverwalk and ultra-modern Museum of Contemporary Art (which reminded up more of Eindhoven or Stockholm ) are also worth taking note of.

The Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre world-famous wetland preserve – and one of the best national parks in Florida. With everything from coastal mangroves to marshes and pine flat woods, not to mention all the animal species, this iconic park invigorates the senses and gives you a big breath of fresh air.

The top activities in the Everglades are kayaking and airboat riding, but there are plenty of free boardwalks to be found. We love the majestic Everglades, but there is so much more to the nature of Florida. One such place is the Ocala National Forest , located just north of Orlando.

The southernmost forest in the continental United States, inside this otherworldly park, you will find hidden cypress stands, bizarre sinkholes and crystal-clear springs — and the world’s largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest. The forest covers 607 square miles (1,570 km2) of Central Florida and has more than 600 lakes, rivers, and springs, including springs where you can swim, snorkel, and dive in the magical crystalline waters year-round.

There are hundreds of trails, many of which take you on past unusual and mysterious scenes, including the remains of 19th-century homesteads. You’ll get the feeling you could be lost for weeks if you strayed from the path, which is probably true, and we don’t suggest it.

There is very much the ‘Old Florida,’ and you can appreciate what early settlers would have experienced when they arrived in this humid and confusing land all those years ago. And get a sense of what this area of Florida was like before the theme parks arrived and changed everything forever.

There are 40+ odd campgrounds and ample activities, whether you want a short hike, longer kayaking adventures, or just to explore this tangle of unique flora and flora.

No list of the best things road trip ideas in Florida would be complete without Walt Disney World Orlando. One of the most popular tourist attractions on Earth (and the most visited vacation resort in the world) – this resort is the flagship of Disney worldwide and worth dedicating at least a few days.

There are four separate parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot,  Hollywood Studios and the Animal Kingdom, each of which is worth a day each on it’s own, which is exactly what the  Disney Four Park Pass  is perfectly designed for, however, if you only have one-day the Magic Kingdom Park is the most iconic and it’s night-time shows just cannot be missed.

And trust me, you are never too old for a trip to DisneyWorld!

Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, Florida, is a spectacular 30-acre heritage and nature attraction. The highlights within are all connected by a 1-mile walking tour that passes through various historic sites in an otherwise pristine coastal ecosystem of clear springs, white sand, alligator-filled wetlands, and jumbled mangroves.

There is no real Spanish connection here (the name is a tribute to the Spanish merchant who told settlers, John and Eliza Webb, about this idyllic location in 1867). The praise was the least they could so as the expansive site is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in County Sarasota. In 1910, Bertha Palmer, a well-to-do Chicago socialite, bought the Spanish Point home along with vast tracts in the surrounding area for cattle ranching, citrus groves, and land development.

The original pioneering homestead was part of the property she selected for her 350-acre estate, which she called “Osprey Point.” She retained the pioneering buildings and combined them with lush landscaped gardens and lawns. Mrs. Palmer passed in 1918, and her family preserved Osprey Point in the following decades and encouraged the nomination of the Spanish Point to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. In 1980, the Palmer heirs donated the National Registry to the Gulf Coast Heritage Association, and the Osprey Point site is now home to the Historic Spanish Point Museum.

Don’t miss the charming Selby Gardens, hugging the beautiful Sarasota Bay, a tropical urban oasis of unparalleled botanical bliss or the turn-of-the-century pioneer homestead historic house museum. A magnificent historic place close to Sarasota, there is so much to explore here, with well-maintained trails and even trams that cross large areas of the grounds if the humid Florida heat makes walking less appealing.

The natural beauty alone means that even without the archeological significance, Historic Spanish Point would be one of the best places to visit from Orlando. And is somewhere you should allow at least half a day to explore.

Sarasota is sophistication without excess, a medium-sized city without the hustle and bustle. Think gorgeous beaches, relaxed ‘Happy Hour’ specials, a charming downtown, and plenty of low-key attractions.

A famed winter retreat for the affluent, one of the biggest drawcards here is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art – if you can draw yourself away from the miles of coastline that is.

There is also a world-class botanical garden, plenty of museums and child-friendly activities – but the Happy Hour food and drinks in the Lido Beach Hotel , with stunning views up and down the coast, is absolutely not to be missed.

Being surrounded by water on three sides and have a rich maritime history, is it any wonder scuba diving in Florida is some of the best in the world. Well, for wreck divers, at least. Its biodiversity doesn’t compare with spots like the Galapagos , Komodo , or Sipidan sadly.

More ocean-going vessels have had the misfortune of hitting reefs while sailed off the coast of Florida than we can keep a record off — and some are even at that sweet spot that can be explored by snorkelers.

Almost anywhere you stay along the coast will have opportunities for diving, but for enthusiasts, Panama City is the wreck capital of Florida providing an underwater graveyard for over a dozen warships, tugs, and most famously a 441-foot World War II “Liberty Ship; “The Chippewa.” There are also natural reefs just a few miles offshore with small corals and colorful sponges.

Another incredible option for diving is the granddaddy USS Oriskany at 911ft long, 148ft wide and 129ft tall, (diveable from Pensacola), or the many wrecks which litter the seafloor around Fort Lauderdale.

For snorkelers, a Spanish galleon, the Urca de Lima , is found in only 10ft of water close to Fort Pierce, or Biscay National Park has a maritime heritage trail with six ships that are small enough for snorkelers.

Florida’s capital is a city of unexpected delights, with larger-than-life festivals, energetic nightlife, award-winning cuisine, and over 700 miles of trails and endless outdoor adventures.

Tallahassee , the largest city in Florida Panhandle, is cradled between slowly rising hills and filled with tree-lined avenues, street art, and a distinctly different vibe than the rest of Florida. Tallahassee is a peaceful and majestic city (ironically) more southern that much of the state it oversees to the South. Given that geographically, it’s nearer to Atlanta than Miami, this inverse relation makes sense.

Even though the city is home to two major universities (Florida State and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University) and plenty of governmental institutions, the tempo of life here is remarkably slow, only adding to its charm. There is a range of museums to explore, like the Tallahassee Museum of History & Natural Science and the Museum of Florida History, which explores European colonization, the Civil War, and WWII, but it’s the southern atmosphere and way of life we found the most alluring.

If you are only dropping by, a glass of sweet tea and a plate of cornmeal-battered catfish from the Catfish Pad is as good an introduction as any.

The crown jewel of the Florida Keys, Key West is a tiny seven square-mile island at the end of Florida’s Overseas Highway. An island of contradictions, you can find here peaceful tropical beaches, world-class snorkeling, and a daily sunset celebration – but this is also an island filled with bars, clubs, frat boys, mass tourism, and even an  S&M fetishist parade.

The drive out, however, is gorgeous, and with proper planning, Key West can be everything you dreamed and more. I recommend staying in the newly opened Perry Hotel for a quiet location away from the crowds, and talking to the guys as Namaste Excursions for an eco-snorkeling excursion to one of the best-preserved reefs in Florida.

Just don’t forget your coral friendly sunscreen!   Whatever you are interested in, Key West has it – and add in the stunning sunsets, happy hour specials, and relaxed island vibes, and you have a destination you just cannot pass up!

St Augustine was founded by the Spaniards in 1565 and today stands as one of the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the continental USA. This alone makes it one of the top places to visit, and indeed it is a major tourist destination — thanks to its 144-block National Historic Landmark District – but there is a lot more to love here.

St Augustine embodies beauty and retains its dignity, having developed gracefully over the years. However, there is no ignoring the blight of kitschy tourist traps that have come with its fame. There are miniature amusement parks, tour companies at almost every intersection , and horse-drawn carriages plodding along the street. Not to mention everyone dressed up in period costumes from ye’ olden days.

Love it or hate it, one of the main endearing qualities of St Augustine is the rich heritage of built architecture, landmarks, and picturesque cobblestone streets complemented by a seemingly endless array of museums. Unlike other faux-historic theme parks in Florida, St Augustine has the credentials to back its fame up.

This is a town of people who were born and bred here, and many of them have chosen to stay in St. Augustine precisely because they are so passionate about their historic city. That means that despite its often touristy feel, there is also an incredible array of beautiful-restored B&Bs, cute cafes, cozy pubs, which only add to the town’s timeless appeal.

Legend has it St Augustine is the home of the elusive fountain of youth, and while it may never have been found — or at least made public — there is plenty of ghost tours and costumed actors willing to help you find it. For those who don’t fall for the allure of endless youth, the ludicrously ornate Hotel Ponce de Leon and Hotel Alcazar are architectural gems to hunt out. Designed by Henry Flagler – each is landmarks of Florida in their own right.

Idyllic Sanibel Island , found on the Gulf of Mexico, just a quick drive from Fort Myers, is renowned for its sunsets, lighthouse, luxurious resorts, and abundance of beautiful and rare shells.

Seashell enthusiasts —yes, there is such a thing — come here for all over the USA to try their luck hunting for the spiral calcium gems that wash up along the beaches here. Over 250 kinds of shells have been found here. One of Florida’s hidden gems, island life on Sanibel is spontaneous and carefree.

The island’s egalitarian nature gives it a rather refreshing point of difference. Growth at Sanibel has been consciously considered, and the island’s northern half is almost completely contained within the JN ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The result is a very paradise lost kind of vibe, with 15 miles of pristine beaches, 25 miles of bike paths, and zero stoplights.

There is no downtown, and the beachfront is blissfully free of the ubiquitous commercial-and-condo monstrosities that can be found on most of Florida’s coastlines.

Plus, there are only a few beach points of access, meaning it is easy to find your own seclusion. There are mansions here, but the hidden from view and life is a very casual affair. This makes Sanibel a perfect choice for a romantic getaway, a family trip, or a nature vacation. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your bucket an a shell guide and get hunting.

The St Petersburg’s downtown is slowly expanding, and Central Ave is now the place to be with a glut of stylish restaurants, in vogue craft breweries, hipster farmers’ markets, and modern art galleries fueled by a wave of young urbanites moving here. It’s not yet as cool as San Diego or Palm Springs , but St Petersburg is getting there. And travelers with a curiosity in food and culture will not want to miss it.

Other top highlights include the Morean Arts Center, St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, and the Chihuly Collection (whose previous works we feel in love with in Toyama, Japan).

A natural and cultural gem hidden away in Southwest Florida, the city of Naples at is at the heart of the Paradise Coast, a sweet spot where the Gulf of Mexico’s sea-green water coincides white sand and lush islands.

Not content to rely on nature’s bounty on its doorstep, Naples has filled itself with cultural treasures, culinary pleasures, and sophisticated boutiques to offer a little something for everyone. This is not the backwater of Florida, but instead, a rather stylish conic of old Florida filled couture and style, and the prices to make. Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, with the second-highest proportion of millionaires per capita in the US.

The historic Old Naples is a fabulous place for people watching, filled with Mediterranean revival mansions, tall coconut palms, and banyan trees — along with over 100 beautiful apparel shops, gift boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. Dotted in amongst it all are old cottages from a time before money found its way here, but notable no high-rises as they are prioritized here.

Whether you are staying a few nights or decide just to pass through, try to see the outstanding Naples Botanical Gardens (up there with the world’s best gardens in Singapore and Rio de Janeiro ), the modernist Baker Museum and the quaint relic of the past: Palm Cottage.

If being part of the glitterati is not top of your list of Floridan things to do, you might still be drawn to Naples to the significant land reserves in the surrounding area, including the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, and the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

The small town of Gainesville initially prospered as a citrus-producing town thanks to its fortuitous location upon the Florida Railroad Company’s route, which trudged along via Cedar Key towards Fernandina Beach.

Then the frequent freezes in the 1890s led to orange-growers migrating south. But today, Gainesville in northern Florida is not a forgotten backwater – but rather a vibrant, energetic, and fun city with consistently high livability rankings.

In large part due to being home to the second-largest university in the state, the expansive University of Florida. The University campus might be 2 kilometers away from the urban core, but there are tons of affordable food, trendy bars, and great exhibitions and art galleries thanks to the student culture the engulfs the whole city. Intertwined with this young, student-lead culture is the flourishing music scene of Gainesville. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are just two of the more well-known bands to have made their start in Gainesville in recent years.

There are frequent alternative rock and punk rock gigs, though music-lovers can find almost everything here, from bluegrass to reggae, hip-hop, and even techno. If music and arts and culture don’t do it for you, the area outside of Gainesville is a haven for natural pursuits. There are large untouched wilderness areas and crystal-clear springs providing abundant opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, swimming, and more. No wonder so many students love it here.

Side note: Gainesville is were Gatorade was invented, by the science department at the University of Florida who were trying to combat the Fighting’ Gators football team’s fatigue. If you are going to fully absorb yourself in the attractions on offer here (by day, or by night), you’ll need a bottle or two yourself!

Just next to Pensacola, the gorgeous Panhandle Barrier Islands and one of the many natural highlights of Florida – and thankfully, the most stunning parts including a mainland area and parts of seven islands are now protected as the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Although the area is well recognized for its energetic beach towns, those who want some solitude will find isolated spots with pure white sand easy to find.  There is a cornucopia of riches the be discovered here beyond the magnificent white beaches — with sparkling blue water, coastal marshes, historic forts, trails, and campgrounds. Stretching across from Cat Island, Mississippi eastward for 160 miles to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, there is a lot to discover. The National Parks Service has plenty of information to help you explore further.

Whether you want to relax, nap, and tan on a sandy bank or explore the vestiges of Fort Pickens, there is something for everyone. There is also plenty of opportunities for seeing wildlife like birds, turtles, and alligators. Since it’s a National Park, you do need to pay an entrance fee, but the fee is good for seven days. Considering how uncrowded, clean, and visually appealing the coastline here is – we think this is excellent value for money.

Apalachicola is one of the most famous attractions in Florida, not to mention one of the most attractive villages on the Gulf. A popular Panhandle escape, Apalachicola has a demure Southern feel and a wealth of outstanding lodging and places to eat. Laid-back and sublimely kept, we are surprised Apalachicola isn’t more famous.

The oak-shaded town, situated on the cusp of a wide bay, seamlessly blends its historic fishing economy with a new penchant for modern bistros, curious art galleries, trendy boutiques, and charming lodgings in restored mansions. By there is more to Apalachicola than being just a beautiful Gulfside town.

It’s an initiation to the real Florida’s, the one with a laid-back culture where not everything is perfectly presented. You won’t find a Disney Princess or bright neon lights here. Just real Floridians, unforgettable sunsets, and an abundance of oysters (Apalachicola produces 90 percent of Florida’s oysters and is one of the USA’s last locations where they are still harvested from the world).

One of the most romantic weekend getaways you could ever imagine, the historic district of Apalachicola will find a special place in your heart and then never leave.

The Florida Peninsula is bordered by mangrove-fronted keys and countless barrier islands. Most are reachable by roads and crossings —  but you’ll need to go by boat in order to really escape from the crowds.  The Caladesi Island State Park is one such place.

Only accessible by a 20-minute ferry ride, you’ll be rewarded for all your extra effort with three miles of seashell-strewn pristine beaches on Florida’s Gulf coast. A journey to Caladesi Island is an absolute blast, whether it’s a walk along the sandy beaches or kayaking along mangrove bayside.

Try walking through the heart of the island along the natural route to the iconic Scharrer Homestead and experience the marine whispers through a forest of ancient pines and oaks. The Caladesi Island ferry started running every morning at 10 a.m. with various returns and departures depending on the season.

A typical visit is around four hours, but it can be hard to drag yourself away from paradise. A natural, secluded escape like you might find in Fiji or New Zealand , Caladesi Island is one of the top things Florida road trip ideas — for those who don’t mind putting in a little effort.

Taking the Brightline to Disney: Why I switched road for rail to travel from Miami to Orlando

The train’s golden surface glimmers in the Florida sun as it hisses to a stop along the old freight track. We’re in my hometown Boca Raton on the platform to board the Brightline, the high-speed rail service that is going to take my family to Orlando for a long-awaited trip to Disney World .

It’s a train that my mum and I have waited more than three decades to experience, the train that I wanted to take my father on before he died from cancer last Christmas. Like most of the roughly 1.4 million British tourists and 128 million Americans who visit Florida annually, he would have happily driven to Disney World. However, he became mobility-impaired toward the end of his life and the train would have offered an easier route.

In February, I finally decided to make the journey along with my mum, my partner and our four-year-old daughter, who my father had always wanted to take to the Magic Kingdom.

With five stops in South Florida and an Orlando terminus that opened in September last year, the Brightline’s route between Miami to Orlando is the newest American rail experience. Its advantage over driving is that you are elevated above the highway and can see Florida’s sights en route. The disadvantage is that you can’t stop to enjoy them.

Talks about the high-speed rail project began when I was a child – I remember them as early as 1989 – with proposals of magnetic levitating trains and estimated costs of $2bn (£1.6bn) in private financing. Back then, the anticipated train would run up to 300mph from Miami to Orlando, a journey of just 90 minutes compared to roughly a three-hour drive.

But there were hiccups on the way. With construction delays, a failed partnership with Virgin Trains USA during the Covid-19 pandemic, and costs spiralling to $6bn, the project finally opened but did not fully accomplish what it set out to. What emerged was the first privately financed American rail system in over 100 years, which now uses many of the same tracks as Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway. The rail journey never achieved its 90-minute goal; the train trip now takes almost as long as driving.

The 240-passenger train starts in Miami , but we boarded in Boca Raton, one hour down the line. Heading south, the Brightline hugs Florida’s historical east coast routes – from the Dixie Highway, a contentiously named street with a debated history, to A1A (Atlantic 1 Alternate), the coast road immortalised in the work of pop singer Jimmy Buffett.

It’s a landscape where the signs of rapid development and the property crash of 2008 are still visible: local architect Addison Mizner’s coral Mediterranean mansions, 1970s condos, newly built strip malls and luxury golf courses appear and disappear among mango trees, mangroves, derelict industrial estates and water treatment plants. Some lawyers were sitting behind us discussing property contracts – they alighted at West Palm Beach among glamourous women in Jackie Onassis sunglasses.

Past alligator-laden wetlands, the train follows US Highway 1, the longest American north-south highway, a road notorious for traffic jams caused by so-called “snowbirds” – northerners who migrate to Florida for the winter. On our journey I sipped a glass of wine – another benefit of not taking the road. In one section of the train, a group adorned in fuchsia and aquamarine boarded with glasses of sparkling cuvées and grapefruit palomas. The train manager reminded us that the liquor licence only applies when the train is moving.

Everything inside the train appeared to be shiny and new – from its modern light grey seats to its wide aisles. My mum and daughter laughed and played games while facing each other across the table. We passed the time by counting boats – 10 rusty ones in boatyards, three sleek yachts out at sea, and one in the sapphire blue waters of the St Lucie River.

As the train moved inland, the devastation of citrus greening, a disease that ravaged the state’s orange industry, became apparent. My mum pointed out the lone tangelo tree standing among the patch of overgrown saw palmettos and pine trees – it appeared to be an abandoned orange orchard. It’s here we reached our highest speed, 124 mph, while cruising over the San Sebastian River.

We could have stayed in a Disney resort, but a villa in Kissimmee was more reasonably priced at $180 per night. Kissimmee was where my family stayed when we were young, a city once surrounded by cattle ranches and navel orange farms. Staying outside the resort provided some respite, but there was no escaping the giant colourful waterpark at our doorstep.

Heading home on the Brightline, a tanned man in a purple print shirt holding a Stella Artois told me the train is the best way for locals to get to Miami Marlins baseball games and the Miami International Boat Show. As we headed towards our final stop (we travelled all the way back to Miami), the train offered an elevated tour of Central Miami with its Art Deco styling and modern highrises.

Travelling by road the whole return journey would have cost us $12-$40 in tolls plus gas, while tickets start at $49 for the Brightline. Was it an overall better experience than driving? Although not much quicker nor cheaper, it certainly took the stress out of the journey and was more comfortable.

My mum reflected that my father would have appreciated the changing landscape of the Florida he once knew, had he been with us. It was altogether a more magical experience travelling to Orlando by train – befitting a journey to the Magic Kingdom.

Travel essentials

Tickets start at $49 for standard class and $139 for premium class, which includes a five-mile Uber ride from any station (except Orlando) for the mobility impaired. Overnight station parking is $10 per day.

How to get there

Multiple airlines fly from London to Miami and Orlando, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic . The journey time is around 10 hours.

There’s a shuttle that runs between Miami international airport and the Brightline station. Tickets cost $10 for the first passenger and $5 for each additional passenger. The station is also within a 10-minute walk of Miami’s free Metromover monorail , which takes you directly to the airport and into downtown Miami.

The Brightline stops at Orlando international airport. You’ll need a taxi transfer from there to Disney World.

Where to Stay

Kissimmee is a 40-minute drive from Orlando’s Brightline station. Villas from Jeeves Florida Rentals and Rentyl Resorts include entry to a giant water park, heated swimming pools and spas, themed rooms and accessible shuttles to Disney World.

Evermore Orlando Resort

This resort opened in January 2024 and is a 30-minute drive from the Orlando Brightline station. Villas and flats surround a man-made lagoon and 20 acres of beach. On-site activities include swimming, kayaking, golfing, luxury spa experiences and dining at 12 restaurants. Transport to Disney World with an accessible shuttle, and an accessible trolley service around the resort is included.

The California gold rush was one of the most exciting times in U.S. history, defined by prospectors, outlaws, and enterprising madams who journeyed to towns like Placerville, Folsom, and Sacramento with dreams of striking it rich.

Today, this history is preserved throughout California. On this California Gold Country road trip, you'll explore towns in Sacramento and El Dorado counties, stopping at museums, pop culture landmarks, and wineries, before ending in South Lake Tahoe.

Note: Although you can start and stop anywhere, budget at least two days to explore each town.

Rancho Cordova and Sacramento

Start your California Gold Country tour in Rancho Cordova. During the gold rush, the town was a significant supply stop between Sacramento and Folsom. It remains the ideal place to gear up for a road trip since there are dozens of shops, restaurants, and hotels in Rancho Cordova. (Most Rancho Cordova hotels are chains, so keep those loyalty numbers handy.) While you're here, check out the city's vibrant beer, wine, spirits, and mead scene in the Barrel District of Rancho Cordova .

A short distance away, visit historic gold rush buildings dating back to the mid-1800s in Old Sacramento. Today, these buildings hold shops, bars, restaurants, museums, and other tourist attractions. Top attractions include the Sacramento History Museum , the California State Railroad Museum , and a riverfront park with a carousel and waterfront Ferris wheel.

Where to stay in Rancho Cordova: The Courtyard Sacramento Rancho Cordova provides easy access to the freeway and the area's shops and restaurants.

Ten miles from Rancho Cordova, the Folsom Historic District bursts with gold rush-era architecture in upscale boutiques, eateries, coffee shops, inns, and museums. The town square offers a slice of California Gold Country with a historic train depot, turntable, and seasonal activities like gold panning and blacksmithing.

Folsom was founded in 1849 but didn't become a household name until 1955 when Johnny Cash released his single, "Folsom Prison Blues." The singer later recorded two shows and a live album here, cementing its status as one of the most famous penitentiaries in the world. Folsom still operates as a prison, and you can hike or bike past its walls on the wheel-chair accessible Johnny Cash Trail .

Where to stay in Folsom: Bradley House , a bed and breakfast in the middle of Folsom's historic district, is within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and The Square.

Placerville

Twenty-five miles away from the Folsom Historic District, Placerville blossomed from a mining camp to California's third-most populous city during the gold rush.

Today, Placerville is one of the best-preserved Gold Country towns in California. You can easily spend a day admiring the architecture and popping into museums, restaurants, and eclectic shops. Don't miss the El Dorado County Historical Museum , which features artifacts and life-sized displays to showcase the area's history.

18. Nashville, TN

Via atlanta, ga.

10 hours from Orlando (690 miles)

Why you should visit: The world's music capital also has other events to enjoy like delicious food and historical sites.

A type of must-do if you are a lover of country music. Even if you are not, the city's association and love for music will enthrall you.

How to get there: Take the FL-408W and I-75N. Take exit 246 to reach Atlanta and re-merge with I-75N and take I-24W, I-40W. Take exit 209 on I-40W to reach Nashville.

Our highlights: Visit the Grand Ole Opry. This place is considered as the original progenitor of country music and the best place to experience it.

Head down Broadway. This is the beating heart of the city where you can eat, drink, dance, and sing, or, for the more energetic, ride a mechanical bull.

See the famous Parthenon replica. The city was once the most integral center for education for the State, and as such, builders took the opportunity to build a complete replica of the famed Greek monument.

19. Washington, DC

12 hours 15 minutes from Orlando (850 miles)

Why you should visit: The capital of the country is also the best place to witness the greatest historical moments in the United States' existence. This epic road trip from Orlando to Washington DC will provide the opportunity to learning about the building blocks of the nation.

The museums, monuments, attractions, and memorials are among the most famous and iconic structures not just in the country, but in the world.

How to get there: Take the I-95N. Then, get on US-1N and exit on I-95N. Continue along 14th St SW Drive Cir to reach Washington, DC.

Our highlights: Take time strolling along the National Mall. Probably the most recognizable place in the city, it is also where you will find the majority of the most famous monuments of Washington DC including the Lincoln Memorial.

See the Library of Congress. Housing more than 167 million items, suffice to say, simply witnessing the scale would be mesmerizing.

Go shopping in the Eastern Market. Among the oldest markets in the city, there are plenty of products that can catch your interest from jewelry to fruits.

You can also visit beautiful Charleston as part of this road trip. You can take an hours' detour on the way to visit the “Holy City.” It is said that history runs through the city's veins.

In the National Mall, the tallest structure is the Washington Memorial while the largest is the Smithsonian Museum.

Our travel tips: Admission to the Library of Congress (the world's second biggest library) is free, so be sure not to miss it.

Also, consider touring the city's monuments at night time - they take on a whole new ambience!

20. New York, NY

15 hours 40 minutes from Orlando (1,070 miles)

Why you should visit: If you can, don't miss out on a chance to visit one of the biggest modern metropolises. New York is considered by many to be the world's most global cities.

True to its metropolis nature, the city has an immense number of sights and events on offer, from landmarks to a bustling night scene.

How to get there: Take the I-4E and I-95N. Get on the NJ Turnpike. Drive along Holland Tunnel and Varick St to reach New York.

Our highlights: See world famous Central Park. The 693-acre greenspace sitting in the heart of the bustling city will feel like a world away. You'll see some of the most iconic views in the world.

Visit the famous Yankee Stadium. Catching any event at the New York Yankees' home is nothing short of having an experience of a lifetime.

Take some time seeing the Morgan Library & Museum. The multi-millionaire's personal collection houses artifacts, books, and paintings that date back to 4,000 B.C.

Check out the American Art Museum at Whitney. When The Whitney moved to its considerably enlarged Meatpacking headquarters in 2015 from its Upper East Side headquarters, it received a significant renovation.

New York City is the largest city in the United States. Here, you can find almost every language on earth spoken in the same city. You can also find the most diverse range of restaurants on earth - so be sure to venture out of your culinary comfort zone!

Our travel tips: There's much more to New York than Manhattan, so make an effort to escape to the boroughs. Public transportation is, by far, the best way to get about in the city.

21. Niagara Falls, NY

17 hours 50 minutes from Orlando (1,200 miles)

Why you should visit: Perhaps, the most famous waterfall in the Northern Hemisphere, the majesty of Niagara Falls is a once in a lifetime sight.

The Falls' popularity stems from the amount of water that moves through it, not because of its height. This causes an enormous amount of mist and spray creating a breathtakingly powerful sight.

How to get there: Get on the I-4E, I-95N, I-26W, and I-77N. Then drive on I-79N, I-90E, and I-190N. Take exit 22 on I-190N and US-62N to reach Niagara Falls.

Our highlights: Visit Prospect Point Observation Tower. All 3 Niagara Falls are visible from this tower which is located on the ground.

Experience the thrilling Maid of the Mist. The oldest boat tour of the Falls' is the most atmospheric way to get up close and personal to the enormous falls.

See Goat Island's Cave of Winds. Get your heart pumping by walking to a wooden platform merely 20 feet above the Bridal Veils Fall.

Visit Old Fort Niagara. One of the more historical aspects of the area will let you experience the past while enjoying scenic views of the Falls.

Niagara Falls is a collection of three waterfalls: the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and the Horseshoe Falls (the widest). Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in New York, open to the public since 1885.

Bonus: As you'll be in the area, combine your trip with a visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake. And while you're there, make sure to sample their famous icewine.

Our travel tips: While visiting Niagara Falls, please be sure to leave behind anything that can be damaged by water. No matter how much protection you have, the volume of water can leave you soaked if you take a close-up tour.

22. Yellowstone National Park, WY

35 hours from Orlando (2,325 miles)

Why you should visit: A historical national park in more ways than one, the park is known for its fabulous hiking trails and beautiful views.

Yellowstone is the home of iconic geysers such as the Old Faithful, along with exquisite natural scenery in the form of trails and wildlife. The park has the highest number of geysers and hot springs in the world.

How to get there: Hop on FL-408W. Then make your way onto I-75 N, I-24 W, I-57 N, I-64 W, and I-80 W. Take exit 215 on I-80W and follow US-287N and US-20E to reach Yellowstone National Park.

Our highlights: See the unforgettable Upper Geyser Basin. Yellowstone's most popular destination is also the park's largest and the home of Old Faithful and 150 other geysers.

Take in the sights of the Lamar Valley. The best location in the park for viewing wildlife, you will get to see huge buffalo herds and sometimes, even wolves.

Check out Midway Geyser Basin. One of the smaller basins in the park features the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring, whose vivid coloring has long been the poster feature of the park.

Don't miss the Mammoth Hot Springs. Witness steaming water flow naturally over travertine terraces, a unique phenomenon that will leave you mesmerized.

Our travel tips: April, September, and October make up the “off-season” as well as the best times to visit this location because of thinner crowds and more wildlife.

Most people have heard of Disney and associate the name with movies and theme parks. Many people know there is a Disney theme park in Southern California and Orlando Florida.

But what even the most dedicated Disney fans may not realize is just how many Disney Parks there are all across the globe!

Today, there are six official Disney theme park locations worldwide – two in America and four internationally.

All six Disney Parks offer guests an unforgettable experience with attractions and shows that will transport them to faraway lands.

1. California

The original Disney theme park is located in Anaheim California and opened in 1955. Designed by Walt and Elias Disney, Disneyland was the first of its kind and quickly became a beloved destination for families from around the world.

The Disneyland Resort comprises 2 Disneyland Parks, Disney California Adventures, Disney Hotels, and Downtown Disney.

Disneyland is 100 acres and contains 9 different lands. Each land is themed and the attractions, stores, characters, and even food choices reflect that theme.

The lands in Disneyland are

• Frontier Land – where you can immerse yourself in the wild west, eat gigantic turkey legs and ride classic rides such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
• Adventure Land – Adventure land takes you through the jungle on the Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones rides.
• Fantasy Land – is the classic Disney experience where you can see Disney princesses, and ride attractions such as Peter Pan, Snow White, and Mr. Toads Wild Ride. Be sure and walk through Sleeping Beauty castle while you are there!
• Tomorrow Land – Tomorrow land is the futuristic land, with rides such as Star Tours and Space Mountain
• Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – This is the newest land in Disneyland and is a fully immersive experience that makes you feel like you are right in the middle of your own Star Wars movie.
• T oon Town- Fun for kids and adults, Toontown is whimsical and fun. You can see Mickey and MInnies’ houses, as well as Goofy’s house. Toontown has just undergone a major refurbishment and included the popular ride (from Hollywood Studios) Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway.
• Main Street USA – this is the first area you enter when arriving at Disneyland, you’ll see the town hall, Walt’s apartment, and shops lining the street.
• New Orleans Square – Welcome to NOLA! Here you can ride on a riverboat, explore the Haunted Mansion, or travel from the bayou to the Caribbean with pirates.
• Critter Country was the previous home to the Country Bears Jamboree, but they have been removed. You can ride Splash Mountain in critter country (which is currently being re-themed to a Princess and the Frog theme).

Disney California Adventure Park

In 2001, Disney’s California Adventure was opened. This 55-acre park is located just across from Disney land, making it super easy to park-hop during your visit.

At Disney’s California Adventure you can explore old California, Pixar lands, and Marvel Universe.

The lands at Disney California Adventure are:

• Cars Land – Take a stroll down Route 66 and visit Maters Tow Yard, Flo’s, and race with Lightning McQueen in this themed land representing Pixar Cars.
• Avengers Campus – a dream come true for every superhero fan, at avengers campus, you can spot your favorite heroes and ride WebSlinger and Guardians of the Galaxy.
• Pixar Pier – this area is reminiscent of a fair with games to play, a Ferris wheel, Toy Story characters, and the Incredicoaster.
• Paradise Gardens Park- you can find Goofy’s sky school, Ariel’s undersea adventure, and many more rides.
• Pacific Warf – Growing up in California, this area reminds me of home! It feels just like the coastal cities we used to visit growing up. Be sure and try Giradhelli Chocolate, San Francisco sourdough bread , and the Birria Tacos!
• Hollywood Land – Feel like you are on set for a movie with impressive backdrops and an old Hollywood feel. Here you can ride the Monsters Inc Rid, and experience Animation Academy.
• Grizzly Peak – This represents the mountains and rugged parts of California and is home to Grizzly Rapids and my favorite ride in the whole park, Soarin over the world. (Although I wish it was still Soarin over California)
• Buena Vista Street – Old California is represented here. Look for characters near the fountain and make dinner reservations at Carthay Circle for an elegant dining experience that showcases Walt and the original successes that paved the way for the Disney empire.

The Disney Parks in Florida are collectively known as “Walt Disney World”. There are 4 theme parks and two water parks located in Orlando Florida.

The Disney water parks are Disneys Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is the most similar to the original Disneyland. You’ll find familiar attractions, the castle, and Mainstreet, but also a few lands and attractions that are unique to Magic Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom is 106 acres.

You will still start on Mainstreet, and the lands are arranged in the same “hub and spoke pattern” as Disneyland.

The lands in Magic Kingdom are:

• Adventure Land – like California, you can ride the Jungle Cruise here, but you can also ride Pirates of the Caribbean and Alladin’s magic carpet ride here.
• Frontier Land – Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, and themed western shops are here, and you can still attend the Country Bears Jamboree!
• Liberty Square – this land isn’t in California and is unique to Magic Kingdom. All things patriotic can be found here including the liberty bell and the hall of Presidents. Here is where you will find the Magic Kingdom version of the Haunted Mansion, which is a bit different than the Disneyland ride.
• Fantasy Land – The heart of Disney magic, you can ride Peter Pan, it’s a small world and so much more in fantasy land.
• Tomorrow Land – Experience space travel with Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, and the people mover.

Epcot theme park is a Disney park that was built in 1982. It is made to look like the future. There are two parts, Future World and World Showcase.

The Future World has rides and buildings that show how technology will change the future and the World Showcase has different countries with their own food, music, and culture.

Future World

Future World is divided into three “neighborhoods”, each representing a different focus.

• World Celebration – connect with a global community and ride Spaceship Earth
• World Discovery – Explore the wonders of science and technology. Ride Test Track and Mission: Space
• World Nature – Ride Soarin and meet Nemo and friends!

World Showcase

This truly unique part of the park gives you the opportunity to “travel” around the world and learn about different countries and cultures.

Each area is themed with music, smells, food, and shops that represent the country.

Look for your favorite Disney Characters, but remember they will only be in the country they are from.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of the most iconic theme parks in the world. It was first opened in 1998 and is located in the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. Spanning over 500 acres, it is the largest theme park in Walt Disney World.

As its name implies, this park focuses on the animal kingdom and is home to many of the world’s most beloved animals.

Here you can experience exotic wildlife, and thrilling shows, and meet your favorite Disney characters.

• Africa – Of course, a theme park dedicated to animals must feature Africa. Take a journey on the Kilimanjaro safari and view wild animals in their own habitat. Zebras, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and more will be seen in the park.
• Asia – Asia is a fun land with great rides such as Expedition Everest, and the food is really good. here too!
• DinoLand U.S.A – Ride the Dinosaur! ride. There was a playground for kids here, but it is being rethemed currently.
• Discovery Island – The highlight of Discovery Island is definitely the enormous Tree of Life. Attend the bugs life show, it’s fun.
• Pandora – The World of Avatar – This is my favorite land in Animal Kingdom. If you’ve seen the movie Avatar, you will love it here. Ride flight of passage for sure, it’s one of the most fun rides. Be sure and check out Pandora at night, it is so pretty!

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a theme park located in the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. It was first opened in 1989 and is themed around movies and television.

Hollywood Studios is known for its thrilling rides such as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith and Tower of Terror, as well as its live shows such as Fantasmic!

The areas of Hollywood Studios are:

• Hollywood Boulevard -designed to recreate, you guessed it, Hollywood Boulevard and home to Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway.
• Echo Lake – See Gertie the dinosaur and join the Frozen singalong
• Grand Avenue- is designed to represent present-day Los Angeles.
• Pixar Place- There isn’t a lot here now that Toy Story Land has opened, but you can still see some Pixar characters and grab a bite to eat.
• Animation Courtyard – Visit The Walt Disney Presents the attraction, a museum that shows the evolution of Disney film.
• Sunset Boulevard – named after another famous Hollywood Street, this area is home to Rock N Roll Rollercoaster and the iconic Tower of Terror.
• Toy Story Land – Hang out with the toys in Andy’s backyard and ride Slinky Dog Dash.
• Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Ride the rise of the resistance and immerse yourself in all things Star Wars.

For Disney lovers that live in Europe, never fear, you can still enjoy Disney Magic. Head over to the Disneyland Paris Resort and visit Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studios Park.

Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris is a theme park located in Paris, France. It was first opened in 1992 and is 140 acres.

This park, located in Marne-la-Vallee, France is based on the same Disney theme parks you know and love here in the United States with some significant European flair.

• Adventureland – Here you can take a ride on Pirates of the Caribbean or explore Aladdin’s Cave.
• Fantasyland – Visit Cinderella’s castle and take a ride on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups.
• Discoveryland – Explore futuristic technology in this area, like Space Mountain or Star Tours.
• Frontierland – Ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and be sure to visit Phantom Manor for some spooky fun.
• Main Street, USA – Stroll down Main street and take in all the sights. This is a great place for shopping and taking that perfect picture.

Walt Disney Studios Park

At Walt Disney Studios, you’ll be able to experience more cutting-edge Disney entertainment with rides and activities inspired by Marvel superheroes, Toy Story characters, and Pixar movies.

The areas of Walt Disney Studios are set up like “lots” on a movie set.

• Front Lot – Disney Studio 1 is the largest building in the park and is located here, in the front lot.
• Toon Studio – modeled after Toontown in Disneyland, with rides such as flying carpets over Agrabah.
• Worlds of Pixar – Home to all things Pixar
• Production Courtyard – Home to studio D and the Twilight Zone of Terror
• Avengers Campus – Webslingers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and all things Marvel reside here.

4. Hong Kong

Hong Kong Disneyland is a theme park that was first built in 2005. It is in Hong Kong and is quite small, only 67 acres.

There are different lands in Hong Kong Disneyland. Each land has a major attraction that you can go on.

• Fantasy Land – This area is home to the classic Cinderella Castle, where you can take a ride on Dumbo the Flying Elephant or explore Alice’s Curious Labyrinth.
• Adventureland – Get ready for some thrills as you ride the Jungle River Cruise and Tarzan’s Treehouse.
• Grizzly Gulch – Journey into the wild west with the Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.
• Toy Story Land – Hang out with all your favorite toys from Toy Story and take a ride on the Slinky Dog Spin coaster or RC Racer rollercoaster.
• Mystic Point – Chilling mysteries and haunted tales await at this attraction, such as Mystic Manor and Mystic Springs.

5. Shanghai

Shanghai Disney Resort is a theme park located in Shanghai, China. It is the most recent addition to the Disney Parks family and opened in 2016.

The resort spans an impressive 963 acres and is the largest of all the Disney resorts around the world, that’s even bigger than Central Park in NYC!

The park features six themed lands filled with rides, shows, and attractions inspired by Disney characters.

Mickey Avenue – This is the entrance to Shanghai Disney and where all the fun starts! Here you can meet Mickey and his friends, buy souvenirs, and watch a parade.

Gardens of Imagination – Enjoy the lush gardens and colorful flowers while taking in the sights of this area.

Fantasyland – This is the classic Disney land with rides such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Dumbo the Flying Elephant.

Adventure Isle – Explore this dense jungle area filled with temples and exotic creatures!

Treasure Cove – Discover a pirate-filled oasis with thrilling rides like Pirates of the Caribbean Battle For Sunken Treasure.

Tomorrowland – Get a glimpse into the future and see what technology has in store with rides such as Jet Packs and Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue.

The Tokyo Disney Resort is made up of 2 parks. They are located right next to each other. Neither park is actually owned by the Walt Disney Company, but the intellectual rights are leased.

The first one, Tokyo Disneyland, was built in 1983 and at 115 acres, it is a bit smaller than the other one, Tokyo DisneySea.

DisneySea is a 176-acre theme park that opened in 2001.

Tokyo Disneyland is home to seven different lands, full of rides and attractions built around beloved Disney characters. These lands are as follows:

• World Bazaar – Located at the entrance of Tokyo Disneyland, World Bazaar contains shopping and dining locations, as well as the classic Disney characters in their most iconic forms.
• Adventureland – This area has both classic and new attractions from around the world. Guests can go on a safari on Jungle Cruise or explore the depths of Tarzan’s Treehouse.
• Westernland – Explore the wild west with attractions such as Country Bear Theater and Big Thunder Mountain.
• Critter Country – Here, guests can enjoy fun activities like Beaver Brothers Canoes or they can visit Splash Mountain.
• Fantasyland – This area is home to many classic Disney characters and attractions. Guests can take a ride on Dumbo the Flying Elephant or explore Alice’s Tea Party.
• Tomorrowland – Get a glimpse into the future with rides like Star Tours and Space Mountain.
• Toontown – Visit Mickey’s Toontown, where you can meet Mickey Mouse himself in his house or go on Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin.

Tokyo DisneySea

The themed areas at DisneySea are a bit unique compared to the other parks. Rather than lands, Tokyo DisneySea is structured around a central lagoon and features seven different themed ports. These ports are:

• Mediterranean Harbor – Set sail on a Venetian gondola ride through this Mediterranean-inspired area of the park.
• American Waterfront – Take on a wild ride at the Tower Of Terror or explore S.S Columbia in this American-themed area.
• Lost River Delta – Take a tour through this ancient Mayan temple or take on the mysterious Raging Spirits rollercoaster in this adventurous land.
• Port Discovery – This futuristic port features attractions like Aquatopia, and features characters from Finding Nemo.
• Mermaid Lagoon – Here guests can enjoy shows and attractions highlighting the characters from “The Little Mermaid”
• Arabian Coast – This port is home to some of Disney’s most iconic rides, including Jasmine’s Magic Carpet Ride.
• Mysterious Island – Go on an adventure with Jules Verne’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth or explore Captain Nemo’s Nautilus Submarine.
• Fantasy Springs- This incredible area will open in 2024 and will feature themes from Frozen, Tangled (my favorite) , and Peter Pan!

Disney Properties With No Theme Park

While theme parks seem synonymous with Disney, there are still properties that have Disney Magic without the rides.

These locations include:

• Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is a beachfront property located on Florida’s Atlantic coast. The resort features two pools, multiple restaurants, and activities like fishing, surfing lessons, and game nights.
• Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort . This resort is located on the South Carolina Coast and offers beach access, golf courses, bike trails, kayaking adventures, and more.
• Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is Located on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, this resort is a beachfront paradise perfect for family vacations. Guests can enjoy activities like snorkeling and explore a number of nearby attractions, including some of Hawaii’s best waterfalls located nearby.

Disney Cruise Lines

Disney Cruise Lines is one of my favorite cruise lines . You get character experiences, and the incredible customer service you’ve come to expect from Disney cast members.

There are currently 5 Disney Cruise Line ships that offer itineraries and exciting ports of call, from Alaska to the Caribbean to Europe.

Universal's Halloween Horror Nights 2024 will be the longest ever. Here are the dates.

Halloween Horror Nights fans rejoice. The terror starts earlier than ever before this year, giving guests more adrenaline-fueled thrills.

Universal Orlando Resort’s iconic Halloween Horror Nights will kick off on Aug. 30 – one day earlier than last year – and run on select nights through Nov. 3 this year, the theme park announced Thursday. That’s a total of 48 nights of frightful fun.

This year’s HHN will also introduce several new attractions to keep the scares coming, including 10 new haunted houses with creepy storylines. 

People ready for the tricks and treats can now purchase tickets to experience Halloween Horror Nights 2024 at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida, including special packages with VIP and behind-the-scenes access. 

Details regarding HHN at Universal Studios Hollywood in California have not been released yet.

What’s new at HHN 2024?

Here’s what we know about Halloween Horror Nights 2024 so far:

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort will debut 10 “movie-quality haunted houses inspired by cinematic greats and eerie original stories created by the twisted minds of Universal’s Entertainment team,” the press release said. The themes of the haunted houses have not been revealed as of Thursday’s announcement.

Last year’s haunted houses were themed around the classic murdering toy Chucky, the popular video game The Last of Us, "Stranger Things" Season 4, the film "The Exorcist: Believer" and Universal cinematic characters hunting down monsters. 

There will also be five new scare zones where “hundreds of menacing creatures” are just waiting to frighten guests.

Guests can also attend a live show and purchase food and drinks inspired by the themes of HNN. 

What are the dates for HHN 2024?

Universal Orlando Resort’s Halloween Horror Nights will be on:

◾ Aug. 30-31

◾ Sept. 1, 4-8, 11-15, 18-22, 25-29

◾ Oct. 2-6, 9-13, 16-20, 23-27, 30-31

Is Halloween Horror Nights expensive?

A single-night ticket for HNN at Universal Orlando Resort starts at $82.99, a price hike from last year’s $73.99. The ticket is a separate event ticket from park admission.

There’ll also be an express pass allowing visitors to skip the line at haunted houses one time. The cost for the express pass is $129.99. 

Are children allowed at Halloween Horror Nights? 

Technically, yes. There is no official age minimum requirement for attending HHN, but the event isn’t recommended for children under the age of 13. Families with young children can always visit the park during the day as the frightful activities commence after 6:30 p.m. 

Are there rides at Halloween Horror Nights?

Halloween Horror Nights consists of immersive events, but select attractions open during the day will also be open at night.
