Marie Osmond

The coronavirus pandemic brought the world to a halt. It also slowed Marie Osmond , but not for long. The entertainer used the time to take her singing career in a different direction. She’s cultivating her childhood love of opera in a new album and upcoming tour featuring a symphony orchestra.

Her concert special, An Evening with Marie , airs Friday (Oct. 1) on  BYUtv.  Filmed earlier this year amid the red rocks of Tuacahn Amphitheatre near St. George, Utah, Osmond is joined by nephew David Osmond (son of her brother Alan) and America’s Got Talent  finalist Daniel Emmet, as well as the Southwest Symphony.

The special offers a sample from her 17-song album Unexpected  due out Dec. 10. Backed by the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Osmond sings a mix of classical, opera and Broadway tunes.“This album is me pushing myself to be something other than what you perceive Marie to be,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of people listen to different songs and they said, ‘Who’s that?’ It thrilled me.”

Osmond stars in her third Lifetime holiday movie, A Fiancé for Christmas , airing Dec. 9. “I love acting,” she said. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do since I was young. but it never worked out.” That’s because Osmond first hit it big as a 13-year-old with her No. 1 country hit “Paper Roses.” At 16, she and brother Donny were headlining their own network television variety show. The mother of seven and grandmother of eight turns 62 later this month.

Marie Osmond Reinjures Knee Ahead of Las Vegas Finale With Brother Donny

In a virtual interview with The Associated Press, Osmond discussed her focus on performing with symphonies, whether she’ll sing with Donny again and what she’s learned during 50 years in show business. Remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: What inspired you to bring classical, opera and Broadway together on your first album in five years?

Osmond : I would sample things in the shows. I was in Vegas for 11 years and so it gives you an opportunity. People, you would see them go, ‘Oh really? I didn’t know she could do “Nessun Dorma.” I didn’t know she could sing “Flower Duet.” I loved opera. I was the weird child in my family. Even though I coined the phrase “I’m a little bit country,” and that is my love of music, I really love to challenge myself. Some people like to play instruments, I like to play vocal things.

AP: You’ve been in show business since debuting at age 3 on The Andy Williams Show . After working with everyone from Lucille Ball to John Wayne, how did their influence impact you?

Osmond : I worked with a lot of people and sometimes I thought, “Gosh, they don’t have anything outside of their career.” I never want that to happen to me because if their career ever fell apart, they did. You can’t ever sit back on your laurels. That’s the one thing I learned as a young girl is you have to work hard. You can’t say, “Oh, I had a hit record, I’m cool.” You have to say, “What’s the next thing that I want to do?” You have to always keep moving. That’s something I learned from what I call the great entertainers.

AP: After you and Donny ended your Las Vegas residency in 2019 and you left The Talk last year, how did that free you to live life again?

Osmond : I love to work. I’m used to working 300 days a year easily. But at this stage of the game, to me it’s not working so many days, it’s working smart. I was kind of looking at my focus prior to the pandemic. I want more time to develop, to act, so the pandemic kind of just flowed into it. More than anything, I just realized life is short and really prioritize.

AP: You’re hitting the road in December for a series of East Coast Christmas shows with symphonies. Why work around the holidays?

Osmond : I love these kind of event shows. There’s nothing more thrilling than hearing a live orchestra and live vocals. There’s just something magical. This is elegance in music. It’s just super fun to get out there and be with people. Not do five nights a week, but to do weekends and special events.

Smokey Robinson, Donny Osmond & More to Present at 2020 Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

AP: Any chance you’ll drop in to sing at Donny’s new Las Vegas residency?

Osmond : I don’t think so. We’re different musically now more than ever. He loves that boom, boom, boom. I like to sit back and explain why I’m singing a song and help you understand the story behind it. I want to do symphonics because I can work weekends and then take time off. My husband and I spent 25 years apart and then we remarried, and I love spending time with him.

AP: You and the rest of the Osmond family have taken a lot of grief from critics over the years. Yet you’ve endured and remained popular. Is there satisfaction in having proved the detractors wrong?

Osmond : It’s more of a great appreciation, it’s more of a thank you. Hey, I never thought I would be working five decades in my business, especially as a woman and especially having certain kinds of things I would and wouldn’t do. I thought that would shut me down but it hasn’t. It’s proof of be who you are, know who you are, and don’t let anything change that.

“I love acting,” she said. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do since I was young. but it never worked out.”

That’s because Osmond first hit it big as a 13-year-old with her No. 1 country hit “Paper Roses.” At 16, she and brother Donny were headlining their own network television variety show. The mother of seven and grandmother of eight turns 62 later this month.

In a virtual interview with The Associated Press, Osmond discussed her focus on performing with symphonies, whether she’ll sing with Donny again and what she’s learned during 50 years in show business. Remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity.

New Marie Osmond album blends classical, opera and Broadway

AP: What inspired you to bring classical, opera and Broadway together on your first album in five years?

Osmond: I would sample things in the shows. I was in Vegas for 11 years and so it gives you an opportunity. People, you would see them go, ‘Oh really? I didn’t know she could do ‘Nessun Dorma.’ I didn’t know she could sing ‘Flower Duet.’ I loved opera. I was the weird child in my family. Even though I coined the phrase ‘I’m a little bit country,’ and that is my love of music, I really love to challenge myself. Some people like to play instruments, I like to play vocal things.

AP: You’ve been in show business since debuting at age 3 on “The Andy Williams Show.” After working with everyone from Lucille Ball to John Wayne, how did their influence impact you?

Osmond: I worked with a lot of people and sometimes I thought, ‘Gosh, they don’t have anything outside of their career.’ I never want that to happen to me because if their career ever fell apart, they did. You can’t ever sit back on your laurels. That’s the one thing I learned as a young girl is you have to work hard. You can’t say, ‘Oh, I had a hit record, I’m cool.’ You have to say, ‘What’s the next thing that I want to do?’ You have to always keep moving. That’s something I learned from what I call the great entertainers.

AP: After you and Donny ended your Las Vegas residency in 2019 and you left “The Talk” last year, how did that free you to live life again?

Osmond: I love to work.

Osmond: I love these kind of event shows. There’s nothing more thrilling than hearing a live orchestra and live vocals. There’s just something magical. This is elegance in music. It’s just super fun to get out there and be with people. Not do five nights a week, but to do weekends and special events.

AP: Any chance you’ll drop in to sing at Donny’s new Las Vegas residency?

Osmond: I don’t think so.

Osmond: It’s more of a great appreciation, it’s more of a thank you. Hey, I never thought I would be working five decades in my business, especially as a woman and especially having certain kinds of things I would and wouldn’t do. I thought that would shut me down but it hasn’t. It’s proof of be who you are, know who you are, and don’t let anything change that.

Marie Osmond doesn’t like the comfort zone

‘age shouldn’t define us. ... i want to keep trying, pushing. i’m not afraid to fail — i’m more afraid to not try’.

Marie Osmond sings on stage.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

Until recently, Marie Osmond had never seen a buffalo.

She also had never seen Old Faithful. While visiting Yellowstone National Park, she stood wide-eyed as the geyser erupted, spouting thousands of gallons of water and reaching a height of well over 100 feet.

“So cool!” she exclaimed three times, laughing in amazement.

I guess I thought this was “so cool” 🤣 Steve took me to see #OldFaithful for the first time! ♥️ #roadtrip pic.twitter.com/IjQta6YT5w — Marie Osmond (@marieosmond) June 8, 2021

During a pandemic that has shuttered concert venues and delayed music projects, and with her two youngest children now in college, Osmond has been taking in a lot of sights for the first time.

“I’ve toured my entire life. I grew up on the road, I grew up on a bus. I relate to not a lot of people — maybe Judy Garland, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson,” the 61-year-old singer said during a recent Zoom interview with the Deseret News, citing a number of former child stars in the music industry. “But most of us, we traveled on the road but never got to see anything because we were in either the concert hall or the hotel room.”

Now, whether it’s on a black Harley she bought last year or in a motorhome she and her husband, Steve Craig — who she remarried in 2011 after a divorce in the 1980s — have taken across the country, Osmond is seeing a lot.

“It was the first time we had been alone since 1982,” Osmond said with a laugh. “The two of us have just been having a blast.”

It hasn’t been all play for Osmond, though. Yes, she’s spent a significant amount of time traveling around, camping and exploring U.S. landmarks. But this period has also led to a different kind of exploration, with Osmond pushing herself even more out of her comfort zone and embracing new projects.

As of late, that continual process of self-discovery includes Osmond’s album “Unexpected” — a 17-song project that covers everything from opera to Broadway to the Great American Songbook. The album doesn’t hit shelves until Dec. 10, but a handful of tracks will be featured during a special pre-filmed concert titled “ An Evening with Marie ” premiering on BYUtv Oct. 1.

“This is a whole new stretch for me vocally and every way else,” Osmond said. “You have to be in shape for this one.”

One door closes, another opens

When the pandemic hit, Osmond’s 11-year Las Vegas residency with her brother, Donny , had been over for four months. Several months later, another big change came when Osmond left the CBS show “ The Talk ” after just one season as co-host, citing a desire to work on other projects and spend more time with family.

“I don’t mind closing doors and opening new ones,” Osmond said. “As a young girl, I got shut down a little bit by change — I hated it. … So I just decided I wanted to embrace it. If anybody’s going to cause change, it’s me. When I’m done with something, I have no problems closing that door.”

That philosophy has now led Osmond — who was 13 when her first single, “Paper Roses,” became a No. 1 country hit — to the album “Unexpected,” a tribute of sorts to a love of opera that began during her childhood.

“I’m the crazy Osmond, right? Country and opera,” she joked.

Both styles and more will be on display in the BYUtv special, which also features the Southwest Symphony , Osmond’s nephew, David Osmond, and “America’s Got Talent” finalist Daniel Emmet. Filmed earlier this year at southern Utah’s Tuacahn Amphitheatre, the concert — which features everything from opera to Broadway to country — marked Osmond’s first performance since the start of the pandemic.

Although Osmond has been developing her chops as an operatic soprano for roughly 20 years — ever since her stint on Broadway in “The King and I” and “The Sound of Music” — she wishes she could’ve had another show or two under her belt before diving into a concert of this magnitude.

The butterflies she felt standing on the stage at Tuacahn — her first performance in more than a year — were the same butterflies she felt as a 12-year-old, when she flew to Nashville to launch her career, she said.

And Osmond is feeling that same kind of nervousness surrounding her new album, which she will promote on a cross-country Christmas tour (she’s not expecting to get in a lot of sightseeing this time around).

But the nerves makes her smile, because it means she’s still growing as an artist.

“Age shouldn’t define us,” she said. “I’m the kind of woman that even with all the experience, I want to keep learning. I don’t know everything. I want to keep trying, pushing. I’m not afraid to fail — I’m more afraid to not try.”

‘I do what I want’

Osmond’s can-do spirit doesn’t mean she’s hitting the stage at every possible moment, though.

In a lengthy career that has brought her face-to-face with a diverse host of celebrities —  everyone from Lucille Ball to Charley Pride to Bob Hope to John Wayne — Osmond estimates she’s performed with more than 600 people.

She reflects fondly on the past, pulling out anecdotes from her days on the “Donny and Marie” show with the same level of excitement she gets talking about her present-day endeavors. But at this stage in her life — and with several grandchildren to dote on — Osmond is being more intentional with her time.

“I’m kind of at a really nice place of peace in my life,” she said. “That doesn’t mean I’m content and I’m done. But I’m also not the kind of person that feels like I’ve got to be out there. I only want to be out there if I feel like there’s something new or fresh, or something that I can give back.”

Aside from her album and upcoming tour, that approach also includes doing work for her charity, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals , and getting more involved in the film industry, most recently producing and starring in the upcoming Lifetime movie “A Fiance for Christmas.”

“My whole life it was, ‘You can’t do this because you’ve got this show and you can’t do that because you’ve got this thing to do. ... So I’m just like, ‘I do what I want,’” she said with a vibrant laugh. “I hire me, so there.”

Family first

At one point during our interview, Osmond, who was wearing a hot pink blazer and black biker boots, paused the conversation to answer a text from her daughter.

“I never, never not pick these up,” she said. “You learn that from life.”

Life has thrown a lot at Osmond over the years, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, including the death of her son , Michael. For all of her success and fame, Osmond seems grounded, rooted in the knowledge of the day-to-day things that make life worthwhile.

It’s the reason she’s ending her upcoming tour a few days before Christmas, so she can be sure to enjoy the holidays with her children and grandchildren.

“It really has been an incredible life, in so many ways,” she said. “I think the reason I didn’t grow up as your typical child celebrity is because of my mother and my faith. She taught me that I could never lean on anybody else’s knowledge. You had to know for yourself, be a fighter.

“And she taught me that faith is a proactive word ... a positive attitude that is a choice,” she added. “And that’s a learned skill that at this stage of the game I’m happy I learned.”

Note: “An Evening with Marie” airs Oct. 1 at 7 p.m MT on BYUtv. Once it airs, the concert will be available to view on the BYUtv app and Byutv.org .

Marie Osmond opens up about playing a countess and what the future might hold

comment icon

Marie Osmond had glowing praise for everyone at The Bold and the Beautiful as she shared what it was like to have an opportunity to play a fun character like the Countess on her favorite soap opera -- and fulfill a dream in the process.

Singer/entertainer/author Marie Osmond recently had an opportunity to appear on her favorite soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful, and she owed it all to her good friend B&B executive producer/head writer Bradley Bell.

Speaking to Soap Opera Digest , Osmond admitted that she'd been a longtime fan of The Young and the Restless before picking up B&B. She had watched Y&R in her early days when she had starred alongside her brother Donny Osmond on the Donny and Marie variety show in the 1970s. Osmond shared that Bell had approached her with the idea of a guest role on B&B years ago, and she had told Bell that she would love to. "So it's always been on my bucket list," Osmond shared.

Unfortunately, it took years for it to happen. Osmond explained that she and her brother Donny had a residency in Las Vegas for eleven years, and they would work five days a week. Between summer tours and Christmas tours, Osmond had a grueling schedule that left little time to do anything else. "Brad would check in now and then and I'd have to say, 'I'd love to but I just don't have the time,'" she said.

All that changed when B&B called while Osmond was in Los Angeles, helping her daughter who had just given birth to Osmond's ninth grandchild. "I said, 'Why not? Let's do it!'" she revealed. Osmond was thrilled to learn that they had written a great part for her instead of having her make a cameo of herself. Her only request to Bell had been to let her have some fun. He asked, 'Do you want to play this jerky countess?' and I said, 'Yeah,'" she admitted.

That's how the haughty Countess Von Frankfurt was born. The faithful Forrester client will make the decision about which designer put the best collection together. Will it be Eric or Ridge? We will have to wait to find out. In the meantime, Osmond teased that the Countess had an attitude and was hilarious. "She definitely lives in her own world," Osmond shared.

Preparing for the role was a whirlwind for Osmond. She was given only two days to memorize her lines, so she had to rely on her Broadway experience from when she appeared in The King and I and had to learn the lyrics of numerous songs. Osmond was also grateful to everyone from the cast to the cameramen because each had been lovely and helpful. "You could tell they all get along great and they're a happy family," she revealed.

John McCook (Eric Forrester), Thorsten Kaye (Ridge Forrester), and Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke Logan) will all be part of the drama that unfolds, and they will be joined by Y&R's Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren Fenmore) and Kate Linder (Esther Valentine) when the two ladies enjoy a crossover to join in on the fun. Osmond had nothing but praise for everyone. "It was long hours, which I'm not afraid of, and it moved very fast because they basically do everything in one take."

Osmond confessed that years of experience in the industry made her a low-maintenance guest. She brought her own hair and makeup person to accommodate the time constraints, so that she could focus on learning her lines. "I wanted it to be easy for them at no extra cost or anything," she explained. Osmond also brought in her own wardrobe for the show to select outfits for the Countess. She explained that she had an understanding and appreciation for the production side of things, and she had no desire to be a diva.

Osmond's impressive career has spanned 51 years, and she has a loyal and passionate fanbase that still surprised her with their enthusiasm. She revealed that her current album titled Unexpected debuted number one on the Billboard (Classical Crossover chart). "Isn't that crazy? I've had number one albums but never that debuted at number one," she said. Osmond shared that the album had been a challenge to herself. "I sing opera, American songbook, standards, legit soprano, orchestral; it's 17 songs in five languages."

Osmond explained that she was twelve years old when she recorded Paper Roses , and it went to number one when she was 13. She recalled at the time that Loretta Lynn had asked her why she had picked country music. Osmond conceded that it would have been easy for her to go the pop music route, since her brothers -- The Osmond Brothers -- had connections in the industry. Osmond had told Lynn that she loved all kinds of music, so Lynn had advised Osmond to sing them all.

Osmond also gets a kick out of gaining younger fans. She recently had a show where fans as young as 15 years old were sitting in the front row. She stopped the show and asked the young fans if they even knew who she was. "And one girl goes, 'We found out you were the Nutrisystem lady, so we listened to your music and fell in love with it!'" Osmond said.

What's next for Osmond? She will resume her busy touring schedule, but she didn't rule out another visit to B&B. She wants to see how the viewers respond to the Countess, but she acknowledged that it had been fun to play her. "Never say never," Osmond said.

Marie Osmond's first appearance as Countess Von Frankfurt was October 27, 2023. She will appear again on October 30 and 31.
