My husband and I did the self-guided tour through Green Valley Ranch with the add-on drink package. We visited three restaurants and easily navigated from one location to the next in the allotted time. We appreciated the convenience of having a table ready for us and being seated immediately upon arrival. Items were brought out quickly, and the multiple courses were well-timed to keep the evening progressing. We started at Borracha with a Pablo Chacon, chips & salsa, dynamite Tacos, taquitos, and chile relleno. All were great, but the dynamite tacos were my favorite at this location. We moved to Bottiglia next with an Aperol Spritz, focaccia, caprese salad, meatballs, and rigatoni bolognese. Here the meatballs were the highlight. Finally, we moved on to Hank's, where we had a cucumber martini, steakhouse salad, a New York steak, fries with dill ketchup, and deep-fried oreos. The cucumber martini was the standout item of the evening (and I will be heading back to Hank's for another soon)! It was also nice to have the bill paid (with gratuity included) before we started. All of the servers took good care of us and added to the experience. We will definitely look for future opportunities to participate in another tour.

Save your money! first restaurant great, down hill from there. Therapy was closed did not know that until we arrived had to call foodie to find out what to do sent us to a Bar next door food was bad bar food!

We booked the downtown tour and it did not disappoint! We showed up right on time for our reservations at each of the 3 restaurants and they all had a table set up for us already. The food came out fast (you have about 30 minutes at each restaurant). We didn't do the cocktail add-on but purchased drinks a la carte at each of the restaurants. The downtown tour included: 1. Carson Kitchen 2. Therapy 3. 7th & Carson These are all pretty popular restaurants in downtown that I've been wanting to try! The restaurants were all less than a 5 minute walk from each other and we spent the night hanging out in downtown afterwards. It's a great deal and you get to try 3 restaurants for a very reasonable price.

*TLDR: The concept of the self guided "tour" is interesting but the execution on both the booking process and the actual tour logistics are BAD. While the food was pretty good, I didn't feel like I had a good experience. If you really just wanna sample some food at these restaurants, I guess it's ok. But don't expect customer service nor a smooth "tour". It's just you going in to 3 restaurants yourself, and the restaurants may or may not know what they are supposed to do with you.* 1. Food Tour review: 1st restaurant: Esther's Kitchen - they were busy and didn't seem to be expecting us. Seemed lost about what they were supposed to serve us. The food was good but the overall experience was awkward. Not a good start. 2nd restaurant: Main Street Provisions - they did it perfectly. Greeted and seated us quickly, immediately know what to do and brought out drinks and food quickly. Checked on us a few times and explained the food and the process. Friendly nice people and great service. Great food. 5 stars for them! 3rd restaurant: Jammyland - they were having a private party, completely swamped. We waited and waited, had to remind them to bring anything. The food was ok, but the process was not smooth. Weird ending of the "tour". Good thing is everyone we met at 3 restaurants were friendly, food was not bad but not sure I'd recommend this tour. 2. Booking process issue: UPDATE: I emailed the company and they clarified that the poor customer service was from Groupon, not them. However, the rude person answered the phone (# listed on their website, not Groupon) said "Finger Licking Foodie Tours", so you will have NO IDEA you are dealing with a different company. After I updated this review, the company emailed again to ask me to take down the negative review. Seems like they only care about the ratings, not about the customer experience. Never received another response, which means they really only cares about the ratings but not about their customers. **Original booking process issue** EXTREMELY RUDE, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! We booked through Groupon, the redeem process was super unclear, we wanted to book a specific tour but the redeem form did not indicate any particular one. Called the 888 number from the Finger Licking Food Tours website, a guy came on the call and basically HUNG UP on us before we could ask the question, just said the confirmation will come in a minute. Called back a few times as no one picked up, finally use a private # to call back and the same guy picked up. I think he didn't want to answer again when he saw the same number. This time we finally got to ask the question, which is - which tour did we book, can he confirm. He was SUPER RUDE, all ANNOYED and said "you didn't get the email? Check your spam folder". Then while we were on the phone, the email came. We were reading the details to see if it indicates which tour we booked, my husband asked does the email show which tour, he just said "DO YOU WANT ME TO WAIT FOR YOU TO READ THE EMAIL?" What the heck? Why can't he answer and explain?? THEN HE HUNG UP! AGAIN!!! What's going on with this company? This is supposed to be a celebration activity, now we are left with a bad taste in our mouth, I don't even know if I would want to go on this tour anymore.

We did a self-guided tour for Downtown Las Vegas back in August 2021. Finger Licking Foodie Tours are self-guided and come a lower price point than the Lip Smacking Foodie Tour counterparts. While a guided tour is alluring, we still had a great time at our own pace with this self guided tour. Price/Value: The price for the self-guided Downtown Las Vegas tour is usually $79 a person. However, I had a MyVegas reward for BOGO, which turned out to be a great deal. Unfortunately, I don't see this reward on the app anymore but if this ever turns up again in the future, I'd jump on it. Even at full price, I do believe the value is there. I was stuffed after the tour, so you do get plenty of food. I wouldn't necessarily pay full price for it, but I enjoyed the offerings at each of the three stops. The Process: Upon booking your tour (there are plenty of time slots for every day), you will receive an email confirmation that contains the details of your itinerary. This includes addresses of each restaurant as well a schedule of times to adhere to (you get about 30 minutes at each spot). It was also nice to see that the tour will accommodate you if you have any food allergies. Tips/gratuity is already included in your tour price. Upon arriving to each restaurant, we simply let them know we were there for the tour. Almost immediately, food is prepped and promptly brought out for us. Service was great at each stop. We didn't feel rushed at all and felt as though 30 minutes at each stop was adequate. The food offerings are bite sized and simply samples of the menu, but all three stops in combination made me full and happy. If you want to be surprised about the food offerings. stop scrolling ahead for incoming spoilers! ******SPOILERS AHEAD****** Stop 1: Carson Kitchen My favorite was probably the deviled eggs with caviar. Other offerings were veal meatball, corn salad, chicken skins. Great selections. This place was also next to Donut Bar, so we had to make a pit stop here. Stop 2: Therapy Standout to me was the mini red velvet chicken waffle sandwich. We also had fried mac and cheese with a side salad. This stop had the smallest portions out of all the places. Stop 3: 7th & Carson I recall the fish and chips portion here being pretty generous! I also liked the mushroom gnocchi. We were also treated to a dessert to finish.

Great way to sample multiple local restaurants that you might otherwise miss! The ability to sample more than one dish at each restaurant also gives a good idea of what each restaurant has to offer

We recently did the Best Desserts in Las Vegas Tour and it was fantastic. Each desert was the restaurant's specialty. We also added the drink package to our tour which gave us a paired cocktail or libation. We went to Gordon Ramsay Steak, Spago, Mastro's Ocean Club and ended at Chica. For the most part it was a walking tour and that was really lovely to have that time in between courses. The venues were not too far from each other. Our group was guided to a private dining room at each restaurant, where we were able to converse with all the different people on the tour. The food and drink came out quickly, efficiently, and was delicious at all venues. Once we got our desserts, the chefs came out to explain what we were eating and greet us. That was a lovely touch. If we had to critique one thing it would be that the leadership could have been a little more engaging with the guests as the night wore on. At the last venue, there was a large presentation that most of the tables missed because we weren't given a heads up that it was going to happen. There ended up being some confusion on whether or not that was the finale. We feel that an announcement should've been made ahead of time as we were seated, so we as the guests knew what to expect. Overall, we loved the tour, have told all of our friends and we cannot wait to do another one. Thank you so much.!

A deliciously good time! Four restaurants and six of the most amazing desserts. A must-do for sure! The tour guides walked us to each location and gave us a preview of what we'd be served. The desserts were AMAZING! 10/10, would do another tour.

Just did our first tour through the Arts District and it was great! We visited Esther's Kitchen, Main St. Provisions and Tavern Costera (was originally Jammyland but they made a last minute swap). Each place was great in their own way and the food was filling. We were really stuffed after Esther's and wondered how we were going to eat at two more places after that! Luckily the walk between restaurants helped work some of that food off. My husband ordered the drink package but I did not, in hindsight he said he would skip it because there was so much food and the alcohol just took up room. Special shout-out to Taverna Costera - the tour operators emailed a week prior to our tour to ask if we would be ok with a restaurant change and we were game for anything. Taverna was the last stop on our list and the best. Chef Chris hand delivered every meal and even sent us home with some sweet bread to go. Main St. Provisions was also super friendly, every server and bartender we interacted with was happy to have us and were really excited to see what we thought about their food. Overall, a great way to experience new restaurants in our city so we can make recommendations for friends and family!

Photo of Arie R.

It's more of eating a bunch of food than a "tour". There's no tour involved, you're just walking to 3 restaurants very close to one another. Carson kitchen: veal meatball, salad (second best), deviled egg (the best), chicken skin (least favorite) Therapy: red velvet waffle chicken sandwich (the best), fried Mac and cheese square (the Mac itself wasn't so good but it was nicely fried), and beet salad (delicious) 7th and Carson: the best location by far!! I wish it was first so I wasn't quite as full by the time I got here. Mushroom Gnocchi (the best), fish and chips, salad (severely overdressed so we didn't eat this). Staff everywhere treated us like royalty and kept checking on us. We were ahead of schedule and each subsequent restaurant was very accommodating. Didn't love al the food and some portions were certainly smaller than others but overall a fun experience.

Self-guided Las Vegas Foodie Tours: A Tasty Alternative During Pandemic

Self-guided Las Vegas Foodie Tours A Tasty Alternative During Pandemic

The coronavirus can’t stop Las Vegas, but it certainly crashed the party. When it comes to our world-class dining scene, many restaurants and venues remain closed while others have limited tables and capacities.

One Las Vegas tour company has turned these obstacles into opportunity. Lip Smacking Foodie Tours , through its companion company, Finger Licking Foodie Tours , is now offering a self-guided alternative to its acclaimed guided culinary tours.

Designed for your own bite-sized group of friends and family (as few as two), the self-guided, e-assisted culinary tours are more intimate than the original. You still avoid the hassle of research and reservations. You still support trendsetting Las Vegas eateries. But now the VIP dining experience is private and socially distanced.

Each tour includes three signature dishes at three different top-rated restaurants, all of which are located within a specific Las Vegas neighborhood. Sans the traditional tour guide, guests are equipped with a map and itinerary, as well as a virtual tour guide who shares details about the neighborhood.

Just follow your map to your destinations, arrive at your scheduled time, sit down and get served like a superstar. When it’s time for your next restaurant, you’ll find it less than a 5-minute walk (or short, pre-arranged Uber ride) away.

“Everyone loves to eat, but they also value bang for the buck, especially now as we’ve come through an unprecedented time in this country,’’ said Donald Contursi, founder of the foodie tours. “I wanted to create a way for people to celebrate dining out again without breaking the bank. I wanted to make them feel special after all they’ve been through.”

Self-Guided Foodie Tour - Downtown Las Vegas

Container Park Downtown Las Vegas

  • Who: Two-person minimum
  • What: Three signature dishes at three restaurants with immediate VIP seating upon arrival; online map; virtual tour guide; detailed itinerary; list of nearby hotspots to check out after the tour
  • When: 2.5 hours, booked between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Where: Downtown Las Vegas
  • How Much:  $79 per person (covers gratuities), plus 15 percent off any other regular price menu items; optional cocktail package available for a fee

Downtown Las Vegas near Fremont Street is a strange mixture of old Vegas and new Vegas. The more traditional trappings of Sin City like gaming, showgirls and spectacle are found to the west of Las Vegas Boulevard; to the east are hip bars and restaurants, murals, public art, local-owned shops, and a neighborhood vibe. All these eclectic elements peacefully coexist within walking distance of one another.

The self-guided culinary tour of Downtown Las Vegas focuses on the area’s flourishing food scene. It takes you to a trio of flavorful restaurants for a trio of signature dishes. The specific eateries on your itinerary are a surprise for the day of the tour, but each is a sought-after, chef-helmed foodie haven.

From unique Burning Man sculptures to a shopping mall made out of shipping containers, there’s plenty in Downtown Las Vegas to check out after your tour, so be sure to leave yourself some extra time.

Self-Guided Foodie Tour - Las Vegas Arts District

Las Vegas 18b Art District Sign

  • What: Three signature dishes at three restaurants with immediate VIP seating upon arrival; an online map; a virtual tour guide; detailed itinerary; a list of nearby hotspots worth checking out after the tour
  • When: 2.5-hours, booked between 5 and 7 p.m.
  • Where: Downtown Las Vegas Arts District
  • How Much:  From $79 per person (covers gratuities), plus 15 percent off any other regular price menu items; optional cocktail package for a fee

The Las Vegas 18b Arts District is considered the gateway between the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas, located across several blocks near Charleston and Las Vegas boulevard. The heart of the city’s First Friday art and culture festival, this antiquated area has been refreshed and revitalized into a vibrant neighborhood. It features tons of stores, theaters, galleries, bars and restaurants.

On the self-guided Arts District tour , you’ll visit three Art District eateries for three signature dishes, each a short stroll from the other. You’ll also gain insight from your virtual guide on some of the city’s most formative and inspirational artwork along the way.

Self-Guided Foodie Tour - Chinatown Las Vegas

Self-Guided Foodie Tour - Chinatown Las Vegas

  • What: Three signature dishes at three restaurants with immediate VIP seating upon arrival; an online map; a virtual tour guide; detailed itinerary; and a prearranged, prepaid Uber ride
  • When: 2.5 hours, booked between 5 and 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday
  • Where: Chinatown Las Vegas
  • How Much:  $125 per person (gratuities included), plus 15 percent off any other regular price menu items; optional cocktail package for a fee

Chinatown often evokes thoughts of big cities like New York or San Francisco. But, as it turns out, Las Vegas is home to its own growing and thriving Chinatown as well.

Located along Spring Mountain Road, less than 10 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, this cultural mecca of restaurants, bars and businesses range from laid-back dives to world-class establishments. There’s dining, shopping, drinking and tons of karaoke.

The self-guided Chinatown tour takes you to three of the area’s most renowned restaurants, where you’ll enjoy three signature dishes at each stop, including a dessert finale:

  • EDO Tapas: Owned by Chef Oscar Amador, Edo offers a unique fusion of small Spanish plates in a lively atmosphere. Following your three dishes at EDO Tapas, you’ll take a pre-arranged Uber ride to Lamaii.
  • Lamaii: Owned by Chef Bank Atcharawan, the elegant Lamaii serves up a twist on traditional Thai cuisine. It is followed by a short walk to Sparrow + Wolf
  • Sparrow + Wolf : Chef Brian Howard cohesively melds Asian, Mediterranean and Latin American at this offbeat eatery.

Be sure to leave yourself some extra time for after the tour to explore Chinatown on your own!

  • Green Valley Ranch Resort – 2.5 hours tour, 10 signature dishes, 3 stops.
  • Aria Resort and Casino – 2 hours, 10 signature dishes, 3 stops.
  • Park MGM – 2 hours, 10 signature dishes, 3 stops.

If you’re not that comfortable enough thinking that it’s a self-guided tour, no worries, as it has a virtual guide that will help you throughout your tour! Yes, Finger Licking provides a self-guided tour with a virtual assistant.

This tour will also guarantee you the flexible time that you want to start, reserved seats, and a private experience!

My Self-Guided Finger Licking Foodie Tour

I had the Self-Guided Downtown Foodie Tour, and as mentioned above. I chose DTLV as I’ve wanted to experience more than just hotels, shows, and casinos. There is impressive art or graffiti in the area; I was able to take a lot of photos of them.

Self Guided Finger Licking Foodie Tour Experience in Las Vegas (10)

On tour, we had a brochure that was given to us. On the guide, we were able to have a list of top restaurants in historic downtown Las Vegas. There was a time indicated when you could visit the place. It’s pretty simple and when we came, we said we are on a Finger Licking Tour and the waiters prepared our dishes right away.

First Stop – Carson Kitchen

Self Guided Finger Licking Foodie Tour Experience in Las Vegas (3)

For our first stop, we visited Carson Kitchen. They offer amazing American cuisines that I really enjoyed. I had the crispy chicken skins, “devil’s” eggs, and the street corn chop. I especially loved the devil’s eggs! I saw a lot of reviews that it is the crowd’s favorite and I wasn’t disappointed!

The staff was also a plus as they’re very accommodating and friendly. The relaxed and very comfortable environment will make your dining experience more memorable!

Second Stop – Therapy

Self Guided Finger Licking Foodie Tour Experience in Las Vegas (1)

Therapy’s food and drink were totally on point! Another best thing about the Therapy is their tasting plate with awesome selections of food from their menu; fried mac & cheese croquette with bacon jam that is worth drooling over! The Chicken and Red Velvet Waffle Slider was my personal favorite! I’m just so glad that it is one of our stops in the foodie tour as it is totally worth it!

Short Stop – The Container Park

Before we headed to our last food stop, we made a short stop at The Container. It’s not a food stop but it’s part of the self-guided tour. Here, you’ll find lots of shops that are all built out of shipping containers, hence the name. It’s a nice attraction with mostly souvenir stuff.

I think visiting The Container Park is a great idea since you don’t want to get to your last food stop with a full stomach, so a shortstop is a nice way to create extra space for the food you’re about to dig in.

Third Stop – 7th and Carson

7th and Carson Las Vegas

The best location by far! I wish this was first, so I wasn’t quite as full by the time I got here. Mushroom Gnocchi (you should definitely get this), fish and chips, and the salad are indeed a must-try! The service was also great and refreshing.

  • 855bethf 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Two thumbs up! My travel agency has long taken the stance that the best tours to send our clients on are the ones we've done ourselves, so we all take as many tours as we can cram in, and do so nearly everywhere we go. Five of us were headed to Vegas for a managers' retreat, and we thought this would be a unique tour to try. This was the first self-guided tour any of us had ever done, and we had no idea what to expect. We arrived at location #1 right on time (very easy to find using Google Maps) and were led to a table right away. Zero wait time. We'd all passed on the drink package, so our server took drink orders. Drinks and food showed up minutes later. At this first place, we had three items served family-style: fried chicken skin (like a whole plate of just the crispy outer part of your fave fried chicken), deviled eggs and a baked, seasoned cauliflower. It was all good enough, but probably not anything that any of us would have ordered on our own. There was at least one item that each of us had zero interest in. While we were given plenty of time in the schedule, we left hungry and a little concerned. Off to location #2. Spot #2 was a short walk and, again, easy to find with Google Maps. We arrived a few minutes early, and agreed that the schedule we'd been given seemed to have the timing down perfectly. Once again, they were ready for us when we arrived and we were led straight back to our table and drink orders were taken. (We had drinks at all three places and I wouldn't say that the extra step of having to pay for them prior to departing each location was a problem at all.) We each received a wooden board with three tasty 3-bite appetizers. Honestly, I can't remember what they were, but we once again nearly everyone had one item that was traded with someone else, and we each ended up with a full board. I think everyone would agree that they LOVED at least one of the items. If that had been the last stop, we'd have headed somewhere for a pizza (or something). No longer starving, but not really full, either. Before heading to spot #3 we were told to go to Container Park for a 10-minute wander. It was already dark and nearly nothing was open, so I can't say there was much to see EXCEPT for that amazing, fiery Mantis sculpture which we all loved. That alone was worth the short walk to get there. Then off to our final restaurant. They were again ready for us on arrival. That "zero wait" concept is great! Drink orders were taken and the food started landing in front of us. As I recall, all five of us enjoyed everything that landed in front of us, and there's *no way* even a hardy eater wouldn't be full after this stop! We all loved that we weren't rushed to leave this spot, either. So in the end, I think this gets a thumbs up all the way around. FOR SURE you need to let them know in advance if you've got dietary restrictions because there's no way the locations could adapt on the fly given the setup of the tour. We reserved and paid for five people, but each spot was prepared for six people. No idea what happened there. That was literally the only thing even slightly off that we could report, though. We didn't expect that everyone would like everything served, and we were correct about that, but with three items at each place, there was always enough to keep everyone happy. Given that tips were included, the price is a great value (particularly for Vegas) and you definitely don't need to get dressed up for this. It's a short walk over to Freemont street afterward, and the dinner tour + Freemont Street makes for a very enjoyable and cost-effective evening out. I'd do it again and would recommend to my clients looking for a low-key, casual way to explore downtown. Read more Written April 3, 2024

  • TrailBlazer773691 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Bad tour the first restaurant (Carson Kitchen) was excellent, so we were really looking forward to the rest of the tour. We got to the next restaurant and found it closed! Foodie tour had sent an email telling us that, that morning. But I had not opened my Email so did not get the message. I called because you could guess I was quit upset. I was told we were to go to Eureka next door to therapy. It was a bar that served food like most bars in Vegas, and that was what we were served bad bar food! The green beans were inedible, the chicken wings were over cooked and dry. I have been to Bars that have good food this was not one of them. The next restaurant was a little better, they had a very good fish and chips. all in all I would never take a tour from then again! the cost was way over what is was worth. • F584HDlisab 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Book the tour! You won’t be disappointed This was by far the highlight of this trip to Las Vegas. We called last minute and even though the booking window was closed they were able to accommodate our party of 4. You prepay the tour, gratuity included which was so nice, pick your area you want to be in and that’s it. So easy! They email you your itinerary. We checked in to the first stop a little early but the restaurant got us seated right away and out came the most amazing food. 4 starter dishes each with its own flavors. You have about 40 mins at each stop but it is plenty of time to eat. Each stop is within walking distance of each other and we had a little extra time between the 2nd and 3rd stop to stroll through the container park in downtown. 2nd stop was more special small bites. Last stop was a full entree sized plate with a mix of their specialties and ended with the perfect sized dessert. You can add on a cocktail package if you’d like. My only complaint really is that you do need a little more time between courses because I was so full at the last stop I couldn’t eat it all! Do yourself a favor and book this tour! They know the hidden gems of Vegas! Read more Written March 2, 2024
  • chmgame 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Will definitely try another tour! Read more Written January 15, 2024

We arrived in Vegas and booked a foodie tour for the next day. We received an email confirming our tour was booked. When we showed up 18 hours later to take the tour we were told our booking wasn’t confirmed and is not valid. But they charged us $248. This place is an hour unethical scam. Stay away at all costs. • ogmauigirl 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Very good company, but choose your tour wisely Overall I like the idea of foodie tours. This is the 2nd one I’ve done (with this company) and unfortunately the first one (downtown arts district) was more impressive…my biggest issue with the Tivoli Village tour was everything to do with the first restaurant, Echo & Rig since my gf and I experienced great food and customer service at the other two (although at our previous foodie tour, part of the appeal was how much care was taken to explain each unique dish and there was much less of that on this tour. And the detailed care and uniqueness of the dishes made it feel more like an “experience” rather than just a nice “sampling” of foods). Anyway, I’ve already written detailed reviews of the subpar service & atmosphere, and merely adequate food at Echo & Rig so really my review of Finger Lickin Foodie Tours would be that yes, the tours are fun overall, but maybe don’t waste the money on the Tivoli Village one…instead opt for one of the downtown ones or maybe spend a bit more for a tour at one of the casino resorts. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Oh and there was no human contact between myself and this company, but all the important info was easily received via email and whenever I needed to make a change, it was quickly dealt with. So the customer service from the foodie company is definitely a plus! Read more Written December 5, 2023
  • GinaL944 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Experience This was a really fun activity and a great way to try out different restaurants. My only suggestion would be to create foody tour menus that include small samples of a variety of different "light" dishes. We did the Downtown tour. Our first stop at Carson Kitchen was amazing. We were able to try many different items and it was a taste adventure. The food was incredible. The food at the next two stops was really good, but was mostly fried and very heavy. There is no way to eat that much fried food in less than two hours and really enjoy the experience. I would recommend keeping the fried food to a minimum, or extend the tour over the course of a 1/2 day and incorporate activities. The walk through Container Park was fun and did give us a chance to partially digest the fried food from the second restaurant before heading to the third one. Read more Written August 8, 2023

For an activity during my week in Vegas for my bachelorette party, I got tickets to the Arts District Foodie tour and the whole experience was phenomenal!! The staff at each location were so welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly. All the food we had was wonderful and everything went seamlessly, from restaurant to restaurant. My friends said that it was such a great time and they would love to do more of these tours and thought it would be nice if it was available in our city (Seattle). I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves trying new restaurant/is a foodie and looking for a great time with friends. Each place we stopped at, we were given there plates from their menu. Some of the meals were made for us to share and others we were each given our own plate. You will definitely leave comfortably full. Oh and don’t skimp out on adding the drink package! The drinks we were given were all so great and we were talking about them throughout dinner!! Once again, highly recommend this experience, 10/10! Read more Written May 27, 2023
  • Dawnlet 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tasty and intimate food tour Our foodie tour of downtown Las Vegas was great! All three restaurants were happy to see us and ready to seat and feed us. It was SO MUCH food. I wish I had a fridge in my hotel room, but it didn't make sense for us to take leftovers. The last restaurant gave us dessert after the savories, which we somehow managed to eat. We didn't need any other meals for the rest of the day. I really liked controlling my own tour and not having to follow a tour guide and a large group. The third restaurant told us that they'd just had a tour with 46 people come through. I think I saw them pass us on the street, and I was glad to have a more intimate experience. It was also nice to be accommodated for a nut allergy - they kept walnuts of my Waldorf salad because of my advance specs. Read more Written April 16, 2023

  • 285rono 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Really great Downtown Self-guided Foodie Tour! We booked the Saturday evening Downtown Foodie tour directly through their website and we had a great experience. This was a self-guided tour and all of the locations were very close to each other. The restaurants knew that we were coming and were very accommodating. The food was good - but it was A LOT. By the third place, were were already stuffed and could barely eat any more. It was a great chance to try some places that we hadn't been yet and it was very well organized. You won't leave hungry!! One of our party got the drink package and that probably wasn't worth it - there were other items on the cocktail menu that were preferred, and the service is fast and easy to order drinks straight off of the menu. 7th & Carson had the best service and friendliest people - it was the last stop and we could relax a bit here. Food was good, but we were already stuffed so didn't eat a ton. Therapy had the best overall food, in our opinion, with the red velvet waffles and chicken being the stand-out selection. Container park was a good time during and after the experience. One recommendation would be to expand on the narration - give more facts about the restaurant, the dishes selected and why we were there. There was a 60 second intro to each place, but some sort of handout or more direction would have been appreciated. Read more Written April 3, 2023

Food was great but the restaurants were busy. That being said we almost didn't get into one of the places but I insisted or I was going to call and complain. They then got us seated. Once seated, food and everything else was great. This only happened at one place. You definitely get the value for your money and the experience is really fun. We had done a different foodie tour with this company at Tivoli Village a year ago and it went off without a hitch. I highly recommend this company and the experience. I will be back to do another. Desperate Times Guided UNLV Food Pantry Coordinator’s Mission to Serve Others

Carmen Johnson’s self-determination and empathetic personality has led to an impressive increase in the food pantry's usage.

Carmen Johnson is the coordinator for the UNLV Food Pantry. From April to December 2023, the food pantry served 2,747 people representing 8,202 household members; a more than 13% and 18% respective increase from the same time frame the previous year. (Becca Schwartz/UNLV)

  • By Steven Slivka

A decade ago, Carmen Johnson had been laid off from her job in Waterloo, Iowa. Pursuing potential job leads often meant a two-hour drive to Des Moines but she was determined to provide for her three young daughters.

“I was on unemployment and supplies were running low, so I would take them to day care or school early in the morning, hop in the van, and make that drive,” she said. “But you do what you have to do.”

Shortly before moving to Las Vegas in 2020, Johnson was working three jobs but still needed to use her local food pantry’s services to feed her family. She felt a sense of guilt; a quasi-obligation to explain to the employees and volunteers working there why she needed to use the food pantry so badly.

“I’ve just always hated taking things from other people. It made me feel guilty,” she said. “It was the notion of taking things from other people, no matter what it was or what it was for, that I’ve never liked. I’ve always been very independent, so it was tough to experience.”

three people looking at a package of food on a shelf

As coordinator of the UNLV Food Pantry , she recognizes in others the same stigma that she once felt using the food pantries in Iowa. She understands how they feel, what they’ve experienced, and approaches them with the same empathy and understanding that she received.

“A lot of people try to explain themselves about why they have to use the food pantry, but I assure them that it’s OK. They don’t need to explain anything to us. That’s why we’re here,” she said.

“[The UNLV Food Pantry] is far beyond any food pantry I’ve ever been to or have worked at. We educate our visitors about nutrition and how to both live better and eat better. It takes me back to gardening life and the time I spent with my great-grandmother. I think we do a good job of helping them thrive here at UNLV.”

An Upbringing That Encouraged Service to Others

Growing up in Iowa, it was her great-grandparents’ influence that shaped her life’s calling to serve others.

Her great-grandparents owned a chunk of land in Waterloo. Her great-grandmother ingrained within her the importance of a healthy lifestyle; tending a garden redolent of fresh fruits, vegetables, and beans that could later be found simmering in a big pot in their kitchen.

Her great-grandfather, she said, maintained an entrepreneurial spirit that had him loading up and hauling scraps of metal in his big truck and then driving it all back home to make tables, desks, and anything else that could be of use.

Whenever his glasses broke, he would mend them with pieces of tape or a band-aid, a quick remedy for a generation that fixed what needed to be fixed rather than buying something new — especially something considered a luxury like a pair of glasses.

When Johnson wasn’t at school or spending time with her great-grandparents, she went to work with her mother, who held myriad jobs — a restaurant, a position within the local school system, and in group homes taking care of people with disabilities.

As she got older, Johnson worked her own assortment of social work jobs assisting various populations, including the hungry and the formerly incarcerated. She used each experience to better prepare herself for the next one.

“Social work isn’t a career I chose. It is who I am. I’m a natural advocate with compassion and a wanting to connect people,” she said. “Just utilize everything you can to make things work. As a social worker, you have to fill in the gaps. I had to be self-reliant like my great-grandfather and nurturing like my great-grandmother.”

Johnson had never been to the West, let alone Las Vegas, when she packed up her home and her daughters and came to Southern Nevada after her oldest daughter was accepted into UNLV’s College of Fine Arts .

“My daughter had also been accepted into schools in California and Arizona, but we decided to come to Las Vegas,” she said. “I like to call it ‘divine intervention.’”

Growing the Food Pantry

Johnson assumed the role of UNLV’s Food Pantry coordinator, managed by the School of Integrated Health Sciences , in November 2022. Since making Southern Nevada her new home, she has grown the food pantry’s usage with support from donors and local grocery stores, and by providing a warm and nurturing environment to the campus community. From April to December 2023, the UNLV Food Pantry served 2,747 people representing 8,202 household members — a more than 13% and 18% respective increase from the same time frame the previous year.

Chris Acosta, a nutrition sciences major in the department of Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences within the School of Integrated Health Sciences, began volunteering at UNLV’s Food Pantry in November 2021 and became a student worker a few months later.

Since Johnson has been the head of the pantry, he’s seen just how much she’s meant to the student workers and those who visit the pantry consistently.

“Carmen recognizes that there is a stigma attached to getting help from a food pantry. She wants the pantry to be a place where individuals feel comfortable to receive help as much as they need,” he said. “She recognizes the impact that food insecurity has within the UNLV community and is continually thinking of ways to combat the issue.” Thanks to a generous partnership involving UNLV, Three Square food bank , and the Molasky family, the food pantry now has a van big enough to transport many more healthy food options from local grocery stores. Johnson can be seen pulling the van into the food pantry’s parking lot a few times a week and unloading the abundance of items to fill the shelves and coolers inside.

After the Dec. 6 campus shooting closed all on-campus dining options through winter break, the food pantry remained open by appointment only and saw a drastic increase in visitors.

“It is our obligation to show compassion to the UNLV community,” Johnson said. “Whether it’s food, a smile, or a kind word — we want to show the campus that we care and that we are here for them.”

Ronald Brown , dean of UNLV’s School of Integrated Health Sciences, credited Johnson for her steadfastness to making the campus community stronger and for her welcoming demeanor all in the name of service.

“Carmen is the epitome of what every person should be in terms of service and an ongoing commitment to social justice and taking care of others,” Brown said. “From the cornfields of Iowa, Carmen has become a magnet of good for UNLV. There is no more caring person you will find on this campus than Carmen Johnson.”

Johnson is proud of the work the food pantry has done for UNLV and remains encouraged by its leadership, including UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield , who has gifted thousands of dollars to the Food Pantry.

“It’s nice to know that feeling of support is already here. Staff, students, faculty. Everybody who comes here is the same,” Johnson said. “There’s no hierarchy here. It’s all about building support and relationships.”

Johnson’s great-grandparents have long since passed; both on April 21: Her great-grandfather in 1993 and her great-grandmother in 2002. Still, their memories are unwavering in her mind.

After she earned her master’s degree in social work in 2022, Johnson finally feels, due in large part to her great-grandparents’ influence, that she is blossoming into the person she was always meant to be.

“Human connection makes it so rewarding to have this career path, and that translates to the work we do here at the UNLV Food Pantry,” Johnson said. “When they come to the door, it's good for them to have someone they can connect with."
