Italy’s Eternal City, Rome was once the center of an empire that stretched over three continents and shaped much of the civilization we live in today. Founded by Romulus in 753 BC, parts of the old city remain remarkably intact, from the impressive Pantheon to the Roman Forum—the heart of ancient Rome. Within Rome is the world’s smallest country and a symbol of Christianity’s role in the city’s history. The Vatican City is home to the Pope and the center of the Catholic Church, where mammoth St. Peter’s Basilica stands alongside the most famous Renaissance-era artwork in the world, including Michelangelo’s incredible Sistine Chapel. As one of Rome’s top-rated tour companies, we make planning your city break a breeze. Explore eerie underground catacombs, make authentic Roman pasta, walk in the footsteps of gladiators on the Colosseum floor, or save time by seeing all the iconic sites of Rome in a day. Just find your perfect Rome tour or day trip to Pompeii, and let our world-class local guides do the rest!

Michelangelo is the group specialist for tours to Rome . With staff based in the capital, we  design group arrangements and tour packages including all the main sights and activities, and organise themed itineraries of all kinds with ease, be it an incentive, study, cultural, pilgrimage or music tour.

Make your group hotel reservation with us and we ensure your tour runs without a hitch. Our group travel services can begin with helpful information relating to the often confusing urban access regulations which are becoming more prevalent for coach travel to Italy. We assist with coach entry permits and will source hotels with coach parking on site if required.

We create your ideal Rome package, be this as a straightforward city break arrangement or as part of a wider Italian tour . We make your religious tour to Catholic Rome complete by including a visit to the Vatican with its impressive St. Peter’s Basilica and Square as well as the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. For all pilgrim groups that want to meet Pope Francis, we arrange access to the Papal Audience which takes place every Wednesday.

As the former capital of the once mighty Roman Empire the city offers stunning historic sights and your group tour to Rome with Michelangelo can also encompass all the sights of Ancient Rome including the Colosseum, Pantheon and the Forum Romanum.

Other main sights such as the Trevi Fountain, Appian Way and the Catacombs or Piazza Navona are bound to appear on a wish list for groups travelling to Rome, and we may even make the arrangements for music groups to perform on Piazza di Spagna’s famous Spanish Steps or other unique performance venues providing a truly memorable setting.

For your opera tours we can provide tickets not only to Rome’s elegant Teatro dell’Opera but also to the amazing Caracalla Festival , held in summer within the site of the former Roman Baths, an amazing backdrop for wonderful opera experiences.

In order to maximize time in the Eternal City we arrange time saving “skip the line” tickets to all of the popular museums and attractions. If your group is sailing on a cruise from Civitavecchia we will arrange group transfer arrangements to and from the port and organise wonderful pre- and post-cruise packages in Rome and other shore excursions, which can include panoramic city tours, private walking tours with your own dedicated guide or Rome by Night tours.

The list of our group travel services to the Italian capital is almost endless and as your Italian partner and group travel planner we have the first-hand knowledge of Italy to make your group tour to Rome an unforgettable experience.

Tour Description

Discover the essence of the eternal city in a single day.

With nearly 3,000 years of history behind it and boasting 900 churches, over 100 museums, countless artistic masterpieces and archaeological sites, the Eternal City is full of never-ending surprises - and a source of inspiration to last a lifetime.

But even if you are here just for one day, with the right planning it's possible to visit the most important highlights of this amazing city - and that's exactly what our Rome in A Day Group Tour is about. Drawing on our years of experience, w e've carefully designed this itinerary to allow you to get the very best out of this extraordinary city in a single day. Traveling comfortably between the sites by minivan will mean you can save your time and energy for the monuments themselves!

The Roman Forum: Walk in the footsteps of emperors

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live at the time of the Ancient Romans? The Roman Forum is probably the best place to imagine the life of our ancestors: as you walk down its ancient roads, your guide will bring these majestic ruins back to life. On our tour, you will see the ruins of the amazing buildings that where our modern concepts of government and politics were born , such as the Senate  (or the Rostra ) , where Cicero and other orators gave their passionate speeches - sometimes paying for their political views with their lives. We'll also admire the majestic triumphal arches that dot the area, built by the ancient emperors to celebrate their victories.

Each one of these magnificent arches has a fascinating story to tell: in front of the Arch of Titus , you will listen to the sad story of the sack of Jerusalem; gazing on the impressive Arch of Septimius Severus  you'll learn about the emperor's military campaigns and the terrible story of his eldest son Caracalla, who killed his younger brother out of jealousy and a thirst for power. Discover the religious beliefs of the Romans and their rituals while exploring the House of the Vestal Virgins and  the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina , still perfectly preserved even today. Exploring the Temple of Julius Caesar , meanwhile, we'll discover the close connection between power and religion - Caesar, dictator in life, was elevated to the ranks of the divine after his death.

The Colosseum: Blood and sand in Rome’s iconic arena

Built by the Flavian dynasty at the end of the 1st century AD, the Colosseum is by far the most iconic building in Rome. Anxious to win back the love and support of the Roman populace after Nero’s disgraceful reign, the  emperor Vespasian started the construction of the monument that was going to be the symbol of Rome for the next 2,000 years. Financed with the treasures taken during the sack of Jerusalem, the Colosseum was built in an incredibly short amount of time - just  9 years , thanks to the famous ingenuity of the Romans and the hard work of thousands of slaves in equal mesaure.

When he inaugurated the Colosseum in 80 AD, Vespasian’s eldest son Titus was determined to get off to a great start: he offered 100 days of shows during which thousands of animals and people were killed, all for the entertainment of the  65,000 bloodthirsty spectators sitting on the bleachers.

Experience the unique atmosphere of Rome's historic centre

In Rome, spectacular art isn't just confined to the walls of dusty museums: here, art and history are literally around every corner  - and there’s nowhere better to truly appreciate how they are still an intrinsic part of city life than the metropolis' pulsating historic center. W ith the help of our expert guide guide, on this tour you'll learn the fascinating stories behind the city's most beautiful squares, fountains and monuments:  admire the Baroque splendor of the Trevi Fountain (don’t forget to throw a coin in its magical waters to ensure your return to Rome), and enter the majestic ancient Roman   Pantheon (from the exterior).  Learn  how the ancients built a dome that even today remains the largest of its kind ever constructed!  Finall, take a stroll in the beautiful Piazza Navona, and marvel at the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers - the  work of Baroque master  Gianlorenzo Bernini.

Lunch at a modern, yet authentic Roman restaurant.

During the tour, you will get to enjoy a sit-down lunch in an amazing restaurant just a stone's throw away from the Vatican Museums. Here you will get to experience a real Roman lunch, including a charcuterie board with bruschetta, cured meats, and cheese with honey and jam. Then you get to chose between a pasta Amatriciana or Carbonara. Last but not least, a home-made dessert is also included as well as water, a glass of wine and coffee during your lunch.

* If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know immediately upon booking so we can inform the restaurant accordingly.

The Vatican: 2,000 years of art and spirituality

At 109 acres and with a popualation of 1,000 citizens, the Vatican City is the smallest country in the whole world.  But don’t let these numbers fool you: in its tiny territory the Vatican houses the 5th largest museum in the world as well as the world’s largest Catholic Basilica.

With the help of your expert guide, you will discover the most renowned treasures of this unique country. In the prestigious  Vatican Museums , you will come face to face with the most celebrated statues of emperors, gods, muses and philosophers from the past. As you walk through galleries and courtyards, you will meet the  Apollo Belvedere  and marvel at his divine beauty; admire the Laocoon  and listen to the tragic destiny of the priest who sought to warn the Trojans not to trust the Trojan Horse .

Walk through the celebrated Gallery of the Tapestries and the Hall  of Maps;  discover why Raphael's art was considered to have been inspired by God himself. Finally enter the   Sistine Chapel,  the spectacular highlight of the Vatican musuems itinerary, and  breathe in the magic of  Michaelangelo’s timeless art.

The last part of your journey will take you to enormous  Saint Peter’s Basilica , where you will be touched by the beautiful Pietà  -   sculpted by Michelangelo when he was just 23 years old out of a single block of Carrara marble. Gaze up at the the main altar crowned by Gianlorenzo Bernini’s  extraordinary bronze canopy.  According to tradition, the Apostle Peter is buried right here, directly beneath the altar where the Pope celebrates mass.

Join us on this unforgettable journey to discover the fascinating stories and figures that have shaped the Eternal City.

Our guide, Erturk, was exceptionally well versed in the history of Rome. He made his talk informative and descriptive. Having his visual aids helped us see how the Forum and the Colesseum probably looked originally. He gave us a timeline of events that led to the present, giving and showing us information unearthed by the archeological digs that are uncovering the history of Rome. In other words Erturk was a fountain of information. He was also highly aware of the extreme heat of the day and was consistently making sure we were as comfortable as possible; keeping us in shade while he spoke, making sure we refilled water bottles, and having us sit when possible. A very kind and considerate guide. The whole tour was a great taste of the historical sites of Rome. His time was well managed so as to give us the most from our day. Thank you Erturk for a great tour.

The 5 best rome colosseum tours with skip-the-line access.

Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.

A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Crown Tours: Skip the line Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour

Price: Adults from $84; kids from $67 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.

Selected by GetYourGuide as a Certified Experience, this group tour starts at the Colosseum, then takes you to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.

Local tip: This tour is offered over a variety of time slots every day. Pick one of the earlier time slots to make sure you'll finish up by lunchtime.

Through Eternity Tours: Ultimate Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

House of the Vestal Virgins at the Roman Forum.

Price: Adults from $105; kids from $95 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Palatine Hill, which some tours skip.

Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable guides for their passion about ancient history and keeping the tour moving while explaining everything in detail. This tour starts at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week and finishes up around lunchtime. In addition to the Colosseum, highlights include the Via Sacra and the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum, as well as the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.

This tour starts at 9:15 a.m. daily. Groups are limited to 10 people; if six or more people are taking the tour, the guide gives out headsets so everyone can hear. Participants are asked to meet 10 minutes before the start time in front of Cafe/Restaurant Angelino ai Fori on Largo Corrado Ricci. The tour is stroller-accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, especially on hot days.

Through Eternity Tours offers a variety of group and private tours of Rome and other destinations, including Florence , Naples and Pompeii.

Local tip: Book a table at the nearby Taverna dei Fori Imperiali to enjoy a leisurely lunch after the tour.

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Interior of the Colosseum from The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access tour from LiveTours.

Courtesy of LivTours

Price: Adults from $163; kids from $145 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.

Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and the surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants noted that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.

Roma Experience: Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

View of the Colosseum exterior on a Roma Experience Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.

Courtesy of Roma Experience

Price: From $531 Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

Standout perk: See these ancient sites with an archaeologist who dug at the Roman Forum.

For a deeper understanding (no pun intended) of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can buy. She studied archaeology and has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other sites, so she's just the person to guide you if you want to get beyond the surface level. Her private tours range from just under three hours for a skip-the-line Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour to the full-day "See Rome in One Day" tour, which also includes a guided visit of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Local tip: If you want to see another incredible archaeological park, let Bove take you to Ostia Antica, less than an hour from Rome.

Imago Artis Travel: Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome

View in between buildings of the Colosseum on an Imago Artis Travel Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome tours.

Courtesy of Imago Artis Travel

Price: On request Duration: 4 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Pantheon in addition to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Founded by three art historians with a passion for Roman art and history, Imago Artis Travel offers bespoke private tours of Rome and beyond. Imago Artis works closely with their clients to craft personalized itineraries that highlight the city's most incredible monuments and hidden gems. This tour lasts a half-day and includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Pantheon, with an optional stop for espresso, but you can customize the itinerary to do a full-day tour or multiday itinerary.

Other itineraries that include the Colosseum bring visitors to the Basilica of San Clemente, known as the "lasagna church" because it was built in layers: The deeper you descend, the further back in time you go. Imago Artis also grants visitors exclusive access to off-limits places, such as a church overlooking the Roman Forum. The company also organizes multiday itineraries throughout Italy.

Local tip: There's an element of surprise and delight with Imago Artis that's hard to find elsewhere, especially if your guide is Fulvio De Bonis, one of the company's founders.
