How to travel like you’re living in an Agatha Christie novel

Out of the many attributes that made Agatha Christie’s novels so popular, it wasn’t just the twists and turns and unexpected culprits in her unparalleled collection of murder mysteries. (Although all that was fun, too.)

Quite often her novels transport the reader, taking them on a trip around the world, and to another time, as well.

A new series of international luxury tours are being curated to replicate those experiences (sans the murder), roughly 100 years after Christie took off on her famous 10-month jaunt, which has since become known among her fans as “The Grand Tour.”

“While our adventures are years apart, it in fact feels side by side in terms of her attitude towards travel, and we couldn’t feel more closely aligned and connected on the importance and significant role that travel has in shaping the world’s storytellers,” says Tom Marchant, cofounder of Black Tomato, the luxury tour operator behind the endeavor.

Coinciding with the release of the upcoming film based on one of Christie’s most popular novels, Death on the Nile , the “Grand Adventure” tours will range from multiple days to weeks across the United Kingdom, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and North America. Travelers have the option to choose one or more—or all, if so ambitious.

The outline of each “leg’ of the trip (there are four among the aforementioned regions) is roughly the same in theme and some activities, but Black Tomato’s team of travel concierges will curate each voyage to the passengers’ interests for a more bespoke experience.

“Throughout this trip, Agatha wrote a series of letters to her mother and sister about the places she was visiting and the experiences she was having, which paint a vibrant picture of her adventure,” says James Prichard, chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Limited , the company managing the literary and media rights to Christie’s works. “Given how much travel influenced Christie’s writing, we thought it fitting to partner with Black Tomato to come up with a bespoke itinerary that would deliver a rich and authentic experience following in Agatha’s footsteps.”

This includes options such as a private jet tour to Niagara Falls, a surf lesson near Cape Town (notably where Christie first tried surfing) as well as Waikiki Beach, a meeting with Prichard (who is also Christie’s great-grandson), and tea with legendary historian and BBC presenter Lucy Worsley, OBE, at Brown’s Hotel in London.

Naturally, while the itineraries are crafted with Christie’s spirit in mind, they are set at the standards of today’s luxury traveler with hotels of the highest caliber and blue-chip transport (catamarans, first-class train cars, etc.). Suffice to say, passengers will not be roughing it.

“We wanted to make sure we captured her route as accurately as modern travel supports,” a spokesperson for Black Tomato tells Fortune. “So you visit many of the places she traveled to, but done with a signature flourish and our modern interpretation, and in many cases reach fairly remote destinations a little quicker and in a different style.”

The tours are private—not organized group tours in which multiple parties can join in and travel together. While older couples certainly are the target demographic, Black Tomato says the tour is suitable for every demographic or type of private group (i.e., families or even pandemic pods of friends). This is especially true for anyone who grew up reading Christie’s books.

“For many children, Agatha is their first introduction to mystery and crime fiction, so it’s a great way for them to supplement classroom learning—and therefore families can bond together over these wondrous tales,” the spokesperson says. “This is also why we have broken the trip up into ‘legs,’ as it will allow for families with limited holiday time to do the leg that most resonates with them.”

black tomato nile cruise

For residents of North America who want to stay closer to home, owing to COVID restrictions or any other reason, the North American leg includes stops from Hawaii (Oahu) to upstate New York (Niagara Falls), with plenty to see in Canada in between.

black tomato nile cruise

Further highlighting how much of Christie’s travels can be replicated today, travelers on this leg will spend nights at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, the Fairmont Banff Springs, the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary, and the Omni King Edward in Toronto—all hotels that Christie stayed at but have since, of course, been renovated to modern standards.

“For us, this partnership was not only a chance to help celebrate Christie’s trailblazing 10-month journey and the fascinating letters and archival images the Grand Tour contains, but ultimately the opportunity to harness the amazing travel experiences she undertook and give them a decidedly tailored reinterpretation for a modern audience,” Marchant says.

Black Tomato Agatha Christie

There is something infinitely enduring about the works of Agatha Christie, who has become one the best-selling authors of all time—outsold only by Shakespeare and the Bible. For lovers of adventure, the appeal may be that many of Christie’s novels unfold against glamorous foreign backdrops and feature a heady coupling of thrilling mystery and the elegance of bygone travel. Among the most famous of these is 1937’s Death on the Nile , a whodunit set on an Egyptian paddle steamer. Kenneth Branagh’s glitzy film adaptation of that tome opens in theaters today , but for Christie fans who crave more than a cinematic glimpse into her wanderlust-propelled fiction, luxury travel operator Black Tomato has crafted a thoughtful series of customized journeys that follow one of the English author’s own real-life adventures: her famous 1922 Grand Tour .

A century ago, Christie set off on an epic 10-month voyage around the British Empire with her first husband, and to commemorate that milestone, James Prichard, chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Limited—and Christie’s great-grandson—tapped Black Tomato to orchestrate a multi-leg Grand Adventure that kicks off in the United Kingdom, then explores Africa, Australia and New Zealand before culminating in North America.

Prichard deems it a history lesson “encouraging travelers to transport themselves back 100 years and imagine what these trips would have been like then, what it would have felt like to get to these places with so little knowledge of what to expect,” he explains to Robb Report , adding the participants will also get a feel for how Christie’s travels “fueled her imagination.”

By collaborating directly with Prichard, the operator was able to reference Christie’s own insights on her eye-opening holiday, which, as Black Tomato cofounder Tom Marchant notes to Robb Report, were “so meticulously chronicled through pictures and letters to her mother,” as well through her own collection of photos, postcards and newspaper clippings. Marchant adds that this helps the programming feel especially considered and intimate, “drawing travelers in much in the way that mystery’s grande dame continues to do with her lyrical and unequalled knack for storytelling.”

Although Black Tomato’s contemporary rendition of Christie’s sojourn is envisioned as a 40-night whopper, it can be shortened to include one or any combination of destinations—and, like all Black Tomato itineraries, can be customized to a client’s specifications. The London portion might include high tea at Brown’s Hotel in London with Prichard and historian Lucy Worsley, for example, while the South Africa leg—which inspired Christie’s The Man in the Brown Suit —may feature sea kayaking or a ride on the swank Blue Train .

In Australia, you can ride a desert bush trams, just as Christie did, to navigate the Dandenong Ranges, while in North America, you can opt for a one-on-one surf lesson on Hawaii ’s Waikiki Beach (a nod to Christie’s own introduction to the water sport on Africa’s Cape Peninsula) or enjoy a private flight over Niagara Falls and tastings at three nearby boutique wineries. In between this flurry of escapades are stays at storied hotels like Belmond Mount Nelson in Cape Town, Saffire Freycinet in Tasmania, Otahuna Lodge in New Zealand, the Fairmont Banff Springs in the Canadian Rockies and the Mandarin Oriental in New York City .

Marchant, buoyed by childhood memories of staying up late with Murder on the Orient Express and watching Christie television dramas on Sunday nights with his family, says that “reading her stories and absorbing them on the screen drove a desire in me to travel further afield”—and that’s exactly what Black Tomato’s itineraries aim to do as well. He adds that Christie’s “uncanny ability to breathe life into destinations, perhaps not always knowingly, through her wildly inventive characters and storylines make her as relevant as ever.”

The Grand Tour is available to book as a complete 40-day trip (starting at $54,155 per person) or as individual legs ranging from two- to 16-nights (starting at $2,680 per person.) The four individual legs are: London; Africa; Australia and New Zealand; and North America.

Here’s what it’s like to take a Nile cruise in 2022

Plan your trip of a lifetime in Egypt with this guide to cruising on the Nile © Lauren Keith / Lonely Planet

Egypt is nothing short of a miracle. Though the forbidding Sahara encroaches from every direction, the Nile River splashes a verdant green ribbon through the country, sometimes managing to push the desert sands only a few hundred feet back from the riverbank.

One of the world’s longest and most legendary rivers, the Nile travels more than 6500km (4100 miles) through five countries, but it’s most closely connected with Egypt. And indeed, so much of Egyptian history has unfolded along the Nile that nearly all of the country’s major cities and ancient tombs and temples are located along this lush life-giving artery.

The ancient Egyptians used the river as a highway, dispatching trade and military expeditions and toting statues of their gods between temples. The 5th century BCE Greek historian Herodotus famously called Egypt the “gift of the Nile,” and even now, millennia later, cruising the Nile is still the best way for travelers to see Egypt’s gifts for themselves.

Ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime? Here’s what you need to know about picking the best Nile river cruises.

Colourful hot-air balloons fill the sky over a landscape of desert to the right and greenery to the left

Why are so many travelers talking about Egypt in 2022?

Nowhere else in the world is the past so intertwined with the present than in Egypt, and 2022 promises to be a blockbuster time to experience them both.

Lonely Planet named Egypt one of the top 10 countries to visit this year , and the long-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open in November to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun , the famous golden pharaoh and “boy king.”

September marked 200 years since the Rosetta Stone was translated, which revealed the meanings of the hieroglyphs and recaptured knowledge that had been lost for centuries. New archaeological discoveries continue apace in Luxor, Saqqara and elsewhere that keep rewriting history.

Tourism hit a record high in Egypt in 2019 and was expected to grow even more in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Like many places, tourism in Egypt has now entered recovery mode, making the coming months a great – and still relatively quiet – time to visit.

Some Nile cruise companies continued construction projects that have seen new boats launched on the river, including the August 2022 debut of the Viking Osiris , a brand new 82-passenger vessel built specifically to navigate the Nile.

Why you should take a Nile cruise when you visit Egypt

While cruises might get a bad rap elsewhere in the world, traveling by boat on the Nile is a time-honored tradition that stretches back to the pharaonic era.

Along the riverbanks, life carries on in the way that it has since time immemorial: mudbrick houses poke out from behind the foliage, children wave excitedly at passing ships, a lone man paddles a blue-painted canoe piled high with alfalfa for his hungry livestock, palm trees heavy with golden dates sag as they await the harvest.

In a fast-paced world, opportunities to simply sit back and watch life glide by are few and far between. Sitting outside on the Osiris ’s balcony traveling at the speed of the river, I felt like I was watching a slow travel TV show – at once both an outside spectator and also completely immersed in it.

In ancient times, mastering the river helped rulers unite the country, and most temples are built within easy reach of the water. Sure, Egypt’s modern-day road and rail network can transport you to these temples overland, but if you skip a cruise on the Nile, the magic of the journey will certainly be missing.

How to choose a Nile cruise itinerary

The vast majority of Nile cruises operate in both directions between Luxor and Aswan in southern Egypt, making stops in Edfu, Kom Ombo and sometimes other small towns.

Which Nile cruise you pick depends on the usual two travel constraints: your budget and your time. Certain boats sail only on certain days, and Nile cruises can be as short as three days, but more commonly last five days.

Most luxury cruises on the Nile, including Viking’s Nile cruises, require signing up for a full Egypt-wide itinerary that starts and ends in Cairo , an excellent option for first-time visitors.

With little signage at historic sites and prices always open to negotiation, Egypt is a tricky place for independent travel. Unless you want to spend your precious vacation time bargaining with taxi drivers and tour guides everywhere you go, it’s best to join a tour for your first visit and leave the logistics to someone else.

What I liked in particular about Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary is that it includes two unusual stops that aren’t standard ports of call for most Nile cruises.

The ship travels north of Luxor to Qena for passengers to disembark and visit the gorgeous Temple of Hathor at Dendera , where the ceilings have recently been cleaned, exposing beautifully painted zodiac symbols and the warped body of the sky goddess Nut, who swallows the sun every night and gives birth to it the next morning.

The boat also stops in Esna for the Temple of Khnum , a small but wonderfully preserved structure. Look up to spot the column-topping capitals, each of which has a colorfully decorated, unique bouquet of palm fronds, bunches of grapes, lotus flowers and papyrus shoots.

In Luxor, you’ll get private access to the show-stopping tomb of Nefertari – arguably the most beautiful burial site in the entire country (and certainly the most expensive at LE1400, about US$72) where nearly every square inch is painted in stunningly vibrant bas-reliefs – as well as the chance to see the stark dichotomy of Egypt’s landscapes from the sky in the basket of a gently drifting hot air balloon.

Tours of the temples and tombs are led by local expert Egyptologists who explain and translate the meanings of the hieroglyphs before your very eyes.

A few companies offer Nile cruises from Cairo, but these sailings are rare, usually operating just once a month – if at all – and take significantly longer because of the distance involved. But you’ll get the chance to check out off-the-beaten-track tombs and temples between Cairo and Luxor that see few visitors.

A view from within a small cruise ship out onto the Nile River in Egypt

What is it like on board the Viking Osiris ?

Decked out in a sleek Scandi color scheme of blond wood and blue textiles that are drenched in natural light thanks to huge floor-to-ceiling windows across much of the ship, the Viking Osiris is an oasis of calm that’s a treat to return to after a long and dusty day of exploring.

The cruise ship has 41 cabins across three decks, plus two upper levels with an indoor/outdoor dining space with windows that fold away for al fresco evenings, a cozy bar and lounge with a resident piano player in the evenings, an infinity-style pool at the back of the boat and a sun deck for days of lazy lounging.

Travelers can check out books from the on-board library’s exquisite collection to read up on Egyptian history on their voyage.

The guest rooms are surprisingly spacious, with comfy hotel-like beds, plenty of wardrobe and storage space, and good-sized bathrooms. Many staterooms come with balconies.

The ship is partially powered by solar panels, and you can see how much electricity is being generated by the sun as well as the carbon dioxide savings on a screen inside.

What travelers should know before visiting Egypt

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Egypt , which you can get on arrival at the airport or apply for online in advance if you’d rather skip the line. The cost of a single-entry Egyptian tourist visa is USD$25, payable in cash at the airport or by card online.

Egypt is a traditional, Muslim-majority country, so both men and women should dress modestly when visiting. For tips on what to pack, local etiquette and more, check these 14 things to help you plan your visit to Egypt .

Things to know about River Nile Cruises All Inclusive

What is the best month for a nile cruise.

The best time for a Nile cruise depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your journey. However, many travelers find that the optimal months for a Nile cruise are between October and April. During this period, the weather is generally mild, and the temperatures are more comfortable for exploring both on and off the boat. You can expect pleasant daytime temperatures ranging from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C), making it ideal for sightseeing and enjoying outdoor activities. Additionally, the Nile’s water levels are typically higher during these months, ensuring smooth sailing and access to a wider range of destinations along the river. These months are also a great time for birdwatching, as migratory birds flock to the Nile Delta.

What is the average cost of a Nile River cruise?

The cost of a Nile River cruise can vary significantly based on several factors. The standard price range for a mid-range cruise can be approximately $1,000 to $3,000 per person for a 4-7 day cruise. Luxury cruises can cost significantly more, ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 or even higher per person. The price depends on factors such as the cruise duration, the type of cabin or suite you choose, the cruise line, the time of year, and the level of luxury you desire. It’s worth noting that some cruises may include excursions, while others may charge extra for them. Additionally, be prepared for additional expenses for tips and alcoholic beverages. However, the memories and experiences you gain from a Nile cruise are usually considered well worth the investment.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

Absolutely, a Nile cruise is undoubtedly worth the experience. It’s a unique and fascinating way to explore one of the world’s most historically significant and culturally rich regions. You’ll get to witness ancient temples, archaeological sites, and modern Egyptian life all from the comfort of a cruise ship. The convenience of unpacking only once while visiting multiple historical sites along the river is unparalleled. The Nile River has been the lifeblood of Egypt for centuries, and its banks are dotted with numerous historical wonders, including Luxor, Aswan, and the Valley of the Kings. Moreover, the luxury and service on many Nile cruises are exceptional. While it can be a significant financial investment, the memories and knowledge gained are priceless.

Are drinks expensive on a Nile cruise?

Drinks on a Nile cruise can vary in cost depending on the cruise line and the level of luxury you choose. In general, drinks can be relatively expensive, particularly when compared to prices in local establishments. The prices for alcoholic beverages like cocktails, wine, and beer on a Nile cruise may be comparable to those in upscale restaurants or hotels. Non-alcoholic drinks like water, soda, and juices are more reasonably priced. To save on costs, some travelers opt for all-inclusive packages that cover drinks or purchase drink packages at the beginning of the cruise. It’s essential to review the beverage pricing structure and options offered by your chosen cruise to budget accordingly.

Why are Nile Cruises so expensive?

Nile cruises often come with a higher price tag due to several factors. Firstly, maintaining and operating cruise ships on the Nile requires considerable investment in maintenance, crew salaries, and amenities. Additionally, the historical and cultural significance of the destinations along the Nile River adds to the cost. Visiting ancient temples and archaeological sites often involves fees contributing to the overall expense. Luxury cruises, in particular, provide top-notch service, gourmet dining, and a range of amenities, which naturally come at a higher cost. Moreover, the exclusivity and unique experiences Nile Cruises offers, such as personalized guided tours and the opportunity to witness iconic sights, contribute to the higher prices. While Nile cruises can be expensive, they offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore ancient Egypt in comfort and style.

Is food included on a Nile cruise?

Food options on a Nile cruise can vary depending on the cruise line and package you choose. Many Nile cruises offer full board, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner as part of the package. These meals are often served buffet-style or à la carte, depending on the cruise. The quality and variety of the cuisine can vary, but luxury cruises generally provide gourmet dining experiences, while mid-range options offer good-quality meals. Some cruise lines also offer special themed dinners and local cuisine to enhance your culinary experience. Snacks and light refreshments may be available between meals, but you should check with your chosen cruise line to understand the specifics of their meal offerings.

Do you see pyramids on a Nile cruise?

A Nile cruise typically does not take you directly to the pyramids at Giza, as these iconic landmarks are located near Cairo, which is quite a distance from the main cruise route along the Nile. However, many cruise itineraries do include pre- or post-cruise options to visit the pyramids and other attractions in Cairo. These side trips typically involve a flight or a long bus ride to reach the Giza Plateau. Nevertheless, the journey itself along the Nile offers incredible views of the Egyptian countryside, ancient temples, and unique cultural experiences. If seeing the pyramids is a priority, it’s worth considering a Nile cruise package that includes this excursion or extending your stay in Egypt to explore them separately.

How many days do you need on a Nile cruise?

The ideal duration for a Nile cruise can vary depending on your interests and the specific sites you want to explore. A standard Nile cruise typically ranges from 3 to 7 days, with the most common duration being around 7 days. This provides a good balance of time to visit major historical sites such as Luxor, Aswan, and the Valley of the Kings while also allowing for relaxation and enjoying the amenities on board. A 7-day cruise usually covers the main highlights, but if you have specific places you want to visit or prefer a shorter or longer cruise, options are available to suit your preferences. A 3-4 day cruise is a quick introduction to the Nile’s wonders, while longer cruises give you more in-depth exploration and relaxation time.

Where is the best place to start a cruise on the Nile?

The two most common embarkation points for Nile cruises are Luxor and Aswan. The choice of where to start your cruise depends on your itinerary and the sites you want to explore. Luxor, often called the “world’s greatest open-air museum,” is a fantastic place to start your cruise. It allows you to explore iconic sites like the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and the Valley of the Kings. Aswan is another popular starting point, known for its serene beauty and places like the Philae Temple and the High Dam. Some travelers start in Aswan and sail north to Luxor, while others opt for the reverse route. The choice largely depends on your personal preferences and the specific itinerary offered by the cruise line. Luxor and Aswan have airports with good connections to other parts of Egypt, making it convenient to begin your Nile adventure from either location.

17 of the best Nile cruises for 2024

Pyramids, desert tombs and secrets that span millennia – a voyage along the world’s longest river reveals the best of egypt past and present. but which is the best nile cruise for you.

black tomato nile cruise

S ailing through timeless landscapes on a cruise is the best way to see the River Nile. It’s one of the richest destinations on earth and has long enticed and seduced travellers, from pharaohs and prophets to modern-day adventurers, to say nothing of fictional Agatha Christie characters. Sailing on the world’s longest river, which flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, is a breathtaking experience, and there are more cruise lines plying the Nile than ever.

So which one to take? The majority of itineraries cover the Upper Nile — a section of the river in southern Egypt known for the country’s most impressive and important ruins and archaeological discoveries, such as the Valley of the Kings in Luxor — and end some 150 miles downstream in Aswan. The trick is to find the right way to explore this amazing river, whether that’s aboard a brand new riverboat, a restored paddle steamer or a luxury dahabiya modelled on a traditional sailing boat. Here are the best Nile cruises.

1. MS Darakum, book via Riviera Travel

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

SS Misr

8. SS Misr, book via Noble Caledonia

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its three, four and seven-night trips are known for celebrating local food — and there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire that takes its inspiration from the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

Black tomato has partnered with agatha christie limited to unveil a three-part grand tour inspired by the author’s own ten-month adventure. jenny southan reports.

Announced to coincide with the cinematic release of Death on the Nile (based on the novel by Agatha Christie), the Black Tomato x Agatha Christie grand tour allows people to follow in the footsteps of the intrepid writer who departed on a ten – month voyage from Madeira in January 1922.

Studying her letters and archives, Black Tomato says it has translated Christie ‘s grand tour into one “monumental” trip that can be undertaken as one of three “chapters” ( Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and North America ) or one full 40-night expedition.

James Prichard, c hairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Limited , says: “ My great grandmother’s travels were a huge influence on her writing, which is evident in stories such as The Man in the Brown Suit (directly inspired by this round the world trip) and of course, Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile .

Cruising the River Nile: Pros, Cons, and Recommendations

black tomato nile cruise

Angus McComiskey/Getty Images

Traditionally, a Nile cruise was considered the centerpiece of an Egyptian vacation, evoking romantic images of idyllic days spent drifting in luxury between the country's ancient sights . In Victorian times, a Nile cruise was the only way to see some of Egypt 's most outstanding ancient temples. Modern visitors have more options available to them; and while Nile cruises are still popular, some find themselves put off by the idea of being confined on a boat for the majority of their vacation. The river is much busier now than it was in the past, and with more than 200 cruise boats plying their trade, there are lines to get through the locks and to dock at each disembarkation point.

Let's weigh the pros and cons of a Nile cruise so that you can decide whether or not it's a good fit for your visit to Egypt.

What to Expect

Most Nile cruises start in Luxor and visit the popular sites of Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo before disembarking in Aswan. Other itineraries fly directly to Aswan and work their way north down the Nile to the same sights. Most cruises will last at least four nights. There are many different vessels to choose from, ranging from traditional paddle steamers (best suited to those that favor history and authenticity) to luxurious modern cruise ships (geared towards those for whom creature comforts are a priority). Your budget and personal preferences will determine which cruise you choose, although opting for a cabin with air-conditioning is advised during the scorching summer months .

Most cruise companies employ the services of an Egyptologist, who will guide your group around the ancient sights you visit along the way. Days start early to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon; and as such, all cruises tend to operate on a similar schedule (which can lead to overcrowding at the docking sites and at the temples themselves). Modern vessels typically have a swimming pool so that you can cool off after your morning explorations; while some provide nightly entertainment in the form of belly dancing shows or themed dress-up evenings. Food on board is usually excellent, ranging from generous buffets to set dinner menus. Make sure to find out what's included before choosing your operator.

Despite the changes brought about by the progression of time, a Nile river cruise is still one of the most popular ways to see Egypt's ancient sights. Part of that is tradition, and part of it is practicality; after all, many of the most famous sites are located directly on the river, making a cruise the easiest way to travel between them. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated, and the sight of them from the water is simply breathtaking. During the day, the rural scenes you'll see whilst traveling from place to place have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Despite the early morning starts (and depending on which vessel you choose), cruises can also be wonderfully relaxing. While sailing, you'll be able to get a sense of the country without having to deal firsthand with the chaotic roads, busy city streets, and persistent hawkers for which Egypt is famous. Although the sites you'll visit along the way are inevitably crowded, arriving in a large group can make some travelers feel more comfortable. You'll also benefit from the knowledge of an expert guide, both in terms of navigating the touts and in terms of understanding the fascinating history of the temples themselves.

For many visitors, the main drawback of a Nile cruise is not the influx of vessels, nor the crowding at the sites (the latter is unavoidable whether you visit them as part of a cruise or not). The main disadvantage is the inflexibility of a cruise; the fact that you have to operate on a set schedule that dictates when you visit a temple, how long you get to spend there, and what you see whilst you're there. If you want to spend more than a few hours exploring the untold wonders of the temple complexes at Luxor, for example, you may wish to travel there independently or with a land-based guide.

These days, overland tours are equally easy to arrange and allow for more flexibility. You can even hire a car or take public transport if you don't want to be part of an organized tour at all. Many cruise itineraries focus solely on the most popular temples, leaving out worthwhile smaller sights like Abydos and Dendera. Alternatively if your time in Egypt is limited, you may prefer to focus on one or two sights rather than spending much of your vacation in transit on the river. The sheer amount of time spent on board can also be a drawback if you're traveling with young children, or if you find out too late that you don't enjoy the company of your fellow cruise mates.

Recommended Cruises

Best Traditional

Audley Travel's five-night itineraries aboard the Steam Ship Sudan offer the last word in exclusivity and Victorian-era refinement. The steamship, which was constructed in 1885 for King Fouad, was the direct inspiration for Agatha Christie's famous novel Death on the Nile and is still decorated in flawless Belle Epoque style. In each of its 18 cabins and five suites, period antiques range from brass beds to vintage telephones. And although the ship is now operated by a hybrid diesel/steam engine for optimum quietness, you can still view the original pistons and paddle wheels. Dining aboard the Steam Ship Sudan includes generous buffet breakfasts and lunches and stately four-course dinners.

Best Luxury

Despite its traditional exterior, the  Oberoi Philae  offers 22 cabins and suites decorated in the same style you might expect from a contemporary 5-star hotel. Each one includes a pillow-top mattress, high-speed WiFi, a multi-pressure shower, and 24-hour butler service. If you're feeling particularly decadent, splurge on a suite with its own private terrace, complete with a sun lounger and heated whirlpool tub. There are two restaurants to choose from, one for gourmet international cuisine, the other for light meals and beverages at the edge of the ship's temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool. Other luxuries range from a movie theater and dance floor to a salon and spa treatment rooms.

Best Budget

Budget travelers should consider booking a felucca cruise like the ones offered by On The Go Tours . Feluccas are traditional Egyptian sailboats, the like of which have plied their trade on the Nile for centuries. They are wind-powered and as such have a more fluid itinerary; while their smaller size allows them to dock at places of interest that don't have the infrastructure for larger cruise ships. There is no luxury on a felucca cruise; you will sleep on deck in a sleeping bag that you bring with you; the food is basic and amenities are limited to a toilet and shower on the accompanying support boat. However, the experience is probably one of the most authentic (and certainly the cheapest) on the river.

Best for Families

Being trapped on a boat for an extended period of time can be challenging for families, especially if they include young children. This 10-day itinerary from Abercrombie & Kent gives you the best of both worlds with some land-based adventures in addition to a four-night Nile cruise. Your journey from Luxor to Aswan aboard Sanctuary Sun Boat IV is accompanied by an A&K Child Activity Coordinator whose job it is to keep your little ones entertained en route. The itinerary also includes plenty of interactive, hands-on fun that doubles as cultural education, from felucca sailing trips to camel rides, henna painting, and bread baking. A themed dinner and onboard costume party lets the kids dress up in traditional robes known as galabeyas .

The Last Word

Ultimately, whether or not a Nile cruise is the right choice for you depends on your personal preferences. If you like the idea of a cruise , the sheer variety of available options means that you're likely to find a vessel and/or operator to suit your needs. If the drawbacks listed above sound like deal-breakers for you, you're better off saving your money and organizing an alternative option instead.

These Luxury Trips Were Inspired by Agatha Christie's 1922 World Tour — and You Can Book Them Now

A new tour, which kicks off in London, follows Agatha Christie’s footsteps across three continents.

Bettmann Archive/Getty Imagest

In January 1922, a young writer named Agatha Christie embarked on a 10-month voyage around the world with her husband, Archie. She was 31 years old and the mother of a two-year-old daughter, Rosalind, who stayed behind in England. Christie’s first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles , " had been published only two years earlier. On the trip, she would surf in Hawaii, cruise the Zambezi River, and ride a train through Australia’s Dandenong Ranges.

These experiences would find their way into her later works — a character from her 1924 book "The Man in the Brown Suit" was directly inspired by Major Belcher, Archie’s boss, who made the trip with them. Throughout her novels, foreign destinations become more than just a setting — they almost become characters themselves. What is " Murder on the Orient Express " without the titular train, which Christie herself traveled on many times?

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the author’s grand adventure, luxury tour operator Black Tomato has debuted a series of itineraries that parallel her trip. There are three “chapters” — Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and North America — that each range from 10 to 15 nights and can be booked either individually or as a whirlwind 40-day journey.

This summer, I went to London for Black Tomato’s “prelude experience,” which introduces you to Christie’s world before you set off on whichever chapter you’ve chosen. I stayed two nights in a sumptuous suite at Brown’s Hotel, one of Christie’s favorite haunts , where she often went to write in the drawing room (some claim it’s the setting of her novel "At Bertram’s Hotel"). I saw an interactive production of Christie’s play "A Witness to the Prosecution" — the jury is made up of audience members — and stood outside the Notting Hill address where she lived from 1934 until 1941.

But the highlight of my visit was tea with Christie’s great-grandson, James Prichard, in the drawing room at Brown’s. (Black Tomato arranges the meeting with Pritchard when his schedule permits. If he is not available, guests have tea with British historian Lucy Worsley.) We chatted for hours over tiny sandwiches and treats — prawn cocktail, a smoked chicken and apricot sandwich, cherry pistachio tart — and cups of Ceylon and lavender-and-lemongrass tea.

“My great-grandmother’s travels were a huge influence on her writing,” Prichard told me. He explained that Christie continued to see the world when her grand tour was over — after her divorce in 1928, she traveled alone to Syria and Iraq (where she met her second husband, Max Mallowan, and would later return to participate in his archaeological digs). " Death on the Nile " was published in 1937, four years after she and Mallowan took a cruise on the river. The couple’s 1958 trip to Barbados is said to have inspired the setting of "A Caribbean Mystery."

“By the time she reached the height of her fame,” Prichard said, “she was an older woman. We forget that she was intrepid and adventurous in her youth. When she first went to Baghdad, she was on her own. She got on a train here in London, stopped off in Istanbul, and ended up there. I think that says everything.”

Black Tomato 's Agatha Christie itineraries start at $7,195, not including the two-day London introduction.

A version of this story first appeared in the December 2022/January 2023 issue of  Travel + Leisure  under the headline "The Plot Thickens ."

Tack tack tack tack tack tack tack! TACK TACK!

I turn, confused, to our guide Claudio and ask whether that aggressive drilling is coming from a jackhammer. He realizes that I’m serious and cracks up before telling our hiking party of three that there’s a tiny endemic woodpecker in a tree nearby. I’m not such a city slicker that I don’t know a bird from a power tool, but the percussive pecking is just so loud. Apparently, when you’re somewhere truly remote and all of those barely perceptible vestiges of human existence—the muffled backbeat of highway traffic, the puffy parallel lines of fading contrail, that sun-bleached candy wrapper—disappear, nature comes into sharp relief.

Indeed, we are somewhere truly remote. We’re about 15 minutes into an eight-mile hike around Lago Chico located in Patagonia National Park in southern Chile’s Chacabuco Valley. It’s one of the country’s newest national parks, part of an enormous tract of land that American conservationists and rewilding philanthropists Kris and Doug Tompkins donated to the Chilean government to turn into protected parkland sustained by ecotourism. I’ve come to Chile with Tom Marchant , co-founder of the travel company Black Tomato , and five members of his team. They’re here on a research and development trip to determine whether, and how, this sweep of Patagonia—home to sprawling grasslands and snow-capped Andean peaks, seaglass-aqua rivers and a returning puma population—should be turned into a Black Tomato adventure. I’m tagging along for this leg of the trip, and for a whirlwind 24 hours in Santiago where we'll check out the sleek new Mandarin Oriental hotel and taste some wine at Viña El Principal, a local winery, before the team heads north to Chile’s starkly beautiful Atacama Desert for round two of research.

Hiking the Lagunas Altas trail in Patagonia National Park

To be honest, I don’t really know what to expect from this trip. Over a pisco sour on our first night at the lovely 10-room Explora lodge, the only lodge in the newly formed national park and our home base for four nights, I admit as much to Marchant. As a travel magazine editor, I frequently work with specialists to send writers to destinations around the globe. As a travel writer, I’ve been on a number of specialist-organized trips. I have perhaps a better handle on what they do than most civilians and I know how crucial they are to planning and executing successful trips, especially during these unpredictable travel times. But I’ve never witnessed the nascency of an itinerary, seen the holes poked and the kinks ironed out. And there’s Black Tomato’s long-standing reputation swirling around in my mind.

It’s easy to forget from the vantage point of today, but when Black Tomato launched in 2005, it shook up the travel industry. It pioneered a new brand of trip planning, one that merged real intrepid adventure with luxury travel, taking a new generation of explorers to then off-grid parts of Iceland and deep into the Moroccan desert, in style no less. With slick marketing and a discerning cool-kid aesthetic, Black Tomato was definitely not your grandma Marge’s travel agency. And it’s continued to innovate and move the industry needle over the years. Did I want to see the proverbial sausage being made or—why stop with one idiom?—would there be a Toto-pulling-back-the-curtain moment?

Marchant admits to me that he, too, isn’t sure what it will be like having a journalist embedded with the team during the R&D stage when he and his colleagues are test driving and candidly working through a potential itinerary. After the second pisco sour, which comes on the heels of rushing out of the lodge in time to see two puma slink into the shadows, no one is worried about anything, least of all my presence on this trip. We clink glasses and decide that we’re a charmed bunch to have seen the elusive puma within hours of arriving (some guests never see one their whole stay) and head off to get some rest before tomorrow’s early trek.

Late October, high spring in Patagonia, is a real weather buffet. Over the course of a 13-mile hike, marked by stripping down to t-shirts only to layer back on puffers and hats when the sun tucks behind rain clouds, I have plenty of time to chat with Marchant and his team as we walk past herds of grazing guanacos and around Laguna Seca where pale pinky-orange flamingos balance on impossibly spindly legs. “The research phase is crucial, especially if you’re scouting a place that is still a little off-piste for most travelers,” he tells me as we scan the horizon for puma (we’re all obsessed, and a little competitive, after last night’s sighting). “A place may seem perfect from 3,000 miles away, but you have to go and experience it with an eye to your client. Maybe the infrastructure isn’t there yet or it’s absolutely brutal to get from point A to point B.”

With this trip, however, Marchant felt confident going in that it would be a fit for Black Tomato. For starters, they’ll be working with Explora, a hospitality company that has three decades of experience in South America and has set the benchmark for adventure lodges and guiding in the region. “Explora is such a cool company and I like that we have a shared ethos,” he says when describing the conservation and rewilding efforts happening in the park in partnership with Explora and Black Tomato’s own recent efforts to become a B Corporation.

The fact that Patagonia National Park is shiny-new is also a hook. “Travelers haven’t really explored this park the way they have other places in Patagonia, like Torres del Paine. There aren't tons of tour operators here yet—it’s kind of a blank canvas and I find that tremendously appealing,” Marchant explains. He goes on to note that while Explora is already doing something great in the area, he and his crew are here in part to look for ways to layer in extras and tailor the trip for future Black Tomato clients. “This could mean,” he notes, stopping and gesturing to a pretty valley that comes into view as we crest a rocky outcropping, “that you get to this point in the hike and you look down and there’s a perfect little camp set up where you’ll stay the night in a tent and have an amazing stargazing experience.” With a laugh he adds, “I’m always looking for ways to surprise and delight. And to create moments; it’s all about having moments.”

He’s half joking with the marketing lingo, but he’s absolutely sincere in terms of the sentiment. By this point in the trip, I’d already experienced a delightful surprise when the six-hour van ride to Explora, which was supposed to follow my 12-hour flight from Los Angeles to Santiago and hour-long jumper flight to Balmaceda, was suddenly replaced by a private plane and a quick flight to a small airport a short drive from the entrance to the park.

Of course the less lofty but very important business of selling the itinerary to clients back home is also driving this trip. Marchant wants Black Tomato’s travel experts like Carly Moss and Ian Jordan who are with him in Chile to experience everything so they can authentically speak about the itinerary as well as understand how to tweak it for specific clients. He also wants their feedback. Most evenings while we're here, he has one-on-ones with team members and asks each for their take on the day. Remarks range from observations about how much time a potential client will realistically need to do this trip (more than a week given how remote it is) to the need for a few more vegetarian options, especially at dinner. Marchant also has Esteban Llauradó (the team’s photographer and videographer, who we dub the “mountain goat” for his ability to scramble up anything to get the shot), film them talking about a favorite thing they saw or did that day.

Making original content has always been a part of Black Tomato’s DNA and Marchant is a born storyteller (the inked Kerouac and Hemingway passages that scroll up his forearms are a hint). He tells me that crafting a narrative to take back to clients is an important part of any Black Tomato R&D trip. “When we were starting out, I thought it was strange that few travel companies were really showing travel in all its glory. Like, you’re trying to get people pumped about visiting all these amazing places but none of the places looked all that spectacular,” he tells me after spending a few hours with Llauradó getting drone footage of the nearby Baker River. “I want to show clients what a place looks and feels like and get them excited about a trip before they’ve boarded the plane.”

There’s no shortage of content fodder or amazing experiences to be had over the next few days. One morning, we kayak down the gin bottle-blue Cochrane River and then hike back while trying to spot Patagonia’s big five. We’ve already ticked off puma, Andean condor, guanaca, and the team swears they saw a rhea, a South American ostrich, the few hours I wasn’t with them. The endangered huemul, or South Andean deer, must remain a mystery. We have tasty meals and excellent wine at Explora’s restaurant and stay up way too late laughing. It’s fun, personally, to be with this team, others who nerd out on travel the way I do. And professionally, it’s elucidating to get this behind-the-scenes look at how an itinerary comes together and how another part of the travel industry operates. I’m genuinely sad when my leg of the trip ends and I have to leave this group behind as they go on to the Atacama.

Kayaking the Rio Cochrane one of Explora Patagonia National Park's excursions

Kayaking the Rio Cochrane, one of Explora Patagonia National Park's excursions

On my long flight home, I scroll repeatedly through the photos on my phone, the way I always do after any trip. Absorbing the images and trying to commit the accompanying feelings to memory, like emotional flashcards. I keep coming back to the photos of that hike around Lago Chico that began with the aggressively loud woodpecker. Toward the very end of it, after trekking for four hours through the spectacular landscape and not seeing another soul, we'd headed up one last hill and arrived at a small wood and stone lookout point with a view of the snowpeak-framed lake below. It was so unbelievably empty and beautiful—the kind of scene that breaks your heart a little. There had been lunch waiting for us–hot soup and cold beers. Simple and perfect. I was surprised and yes, delighted, by this unexpected picnic. Marchant, Llauradó, and I ate in easy silence, taking in our surroundings. Before getting up to leave, the photographer said what we'd all been feeling: “It’s an honor and a blessing to be here with both of you right now.” We'd most definitely just had a moment.

The trip I took has been fashioned into Black Tomato's newest itinerary, Into the Chilean Wilds . This nine-night adventure starts at $13,325 per person (excluding international flights) and includes: guided treks, kayaking, and, of course, unlimited attempts to spot the park's big five while staying at Explora Patagonia National Park; a private tour of Santiago, as well as a visit to the nearby wine region of Pirque, and two nights in the city at the Mandarin Oriental, Santiago , or the charming Hotel Magnolia ; and desert excursions like hiking and stargazing in Atacama, using Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa as a base. Our guide to luxury travel

Luxury holidays are personal. They mean something different for each and every one of us. For some, luxury is hiking in peaceful solitude through a remote corner of the desert, while for others it’s the indulgence of sipping cocktails aboard a private yacht, sailing gently through the Mediterranean. Whatever floats your boat, so to speak.

As luxury travel experts, we work from this, our own (incredibly loose) definition. You tell us exactly what you want from the world, and we’ll help you to see it. To feel it, taste it, hear it. All those wonderful sensorial things.

Our team of seasoned travellers are connoisseurs of luxury, curating unparalleled experiences, tailor-made tours and bespoke adventures. Whether you seek the opulence of a secluded villa in the Tuscan hills or the thrill of an exclusive safari in the heart of Africa, we’ll craft a journey that exceeds your expectations, with every detail meticulously attended to.
