Tom Cruise is 60 and kicking Father Time's butt. Why his birthday is a win for 'Top Gun' fans.

tom cruise 60 years

Happy birthday,  Tom Cruise.  The big 6-0 was July 3. I can't believe we made it.

Yes, Tom Cruise, "we" made it. There have been many of us going along for this ride since you made the maverick decision to bring a second chapter of "Top Gun" to the screen 36 years after the 1986 original.

Sequels of beloved movies can be treacherous. We all want to recapture that thrill of the original, and, if you really think about it, recapture that moment in our lives. But time and again, it's just not possible to catch that same lightning in the sequel bottle.

Even scarier, of course, was the 36 years later part. For those of us who were very alive in 1986, this was a visceral reminder that we are all dangerously close to four decades older.

'Let's light the fires': Tom Cruise arrives by helicopter for world premiere of 'Top Gun: Maverick'

"Top Gun: Maverick" was personal. Tom Cruise needed to prevail not just for the legacy of "Top Gun" or Goose or A-list movie star viability. But for us, for me. "Maverick" had to prove that 36 years ain't no big deal, it's a number, and whatever else we tell ourselves about getting old(er). And Cruise was leading the charge.

Sure enough, that first "Maverick" trailer dropped and Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell looked like he rode that Kawasaki Ninja straight out of the Reagan administration, with the wind running through his hair and big teeth gleaming.

I saw the hair up close. I was on the red carpet in June for the film's premiere aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier in San Diego. The only thing that out-staged Cruise's showboat helicopter entrance was that magnificent hair – entirely brown and bouncy. It was untamed enough to look like a victorious high school quarterback who pulled up post-shower to the homecoming dance.

To my existential relief, "Maverick" blasted through its "Danger Zone" takeoff and stuck the landing. It is an entirely worthy "Top Gun" follow, maybe even a superior film to the original . And Cruise represented. He whipped off the shirt and played dogfight football with his decades-younger co-stars. Cruise obviously didn't have the washboard abs of his  "Top Gun" volleyball game . But there were abs. And dang, he looked good, especially turbo-sprinting down the beach at the end. In blue jeans. Bravo.

Secrets to 'Top Gun: Maverick's epic football scene: Spray tans, protein bars and panic workouts

I asked Cruise how he prepared for that scene, and he shrugged it off, "I just did it," he said with his studied nonchalance. Nice. I generally reserve that line to explain how I ate all the doughnuts.

Onscreen, Maverick has lived the life none of us can live in those 36 years. Not just ignoring but thumbing his nose at his bosses , joyriding supersonic jets, buzzing the bleeping tower on Jon Hamm's Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson. Yet Cyclone still gives that "I respect you" nod at the end, before Maverick goes off to sunset smooch with Jennifer Connelly. You go, Maverick! He doesn't care about car payments, mortgages or inflation. He just flies.

Ed Harris stood up to 'Maverick':  He held steady as jet 'blew the roof off guard station'

Here on Earth, I grimace comedically every time I stand up following any exercise and I'm prone to shouts of agony when my shoulder just locks. I turned the big 55 in April, and happened to be in a Ross Dress for Less, which is hard enough to admit. Turns out Ross has a very liberal senior discount for their Every Tuesday Club, which to my horror, I was suddenly eligible for. Getting 10% off ceramic planters (total savings: $2) should not induce tears. But, gulp. It was my first senior discount.

I calmed myself by harnessing my inner Maverick. I'm sure Tom Cruise has figured out how to slow down, maybe even stop time. He's already back at work to show me feats of inconceivable movie heroics in "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" Part I (July 14, 2023) and 2 (June 28, 2024).

So I shout to you Tom Cruise: To 60 and beyond! Ride on forever, with the wind whipping through your hair.

LONDON – Tom Cruise really does have the royal seal of approval.

Cruise is 60 years old. That is correct.

The superstar of Hollywood is 60 yet looks 35 up close. I should know. I just sat down with Tom while at Windsor Castle, where he hosted the brilliant royal event, "A Gallop Through History," at the queen’s request.

The last few years have also seen Tom Cruise completely reinvent his public persona from eccentric, and at times embattled, to the consummate Hollywood leading man with ageless good looks and box office receipts to match.

As Tom strode onto the large platform at Windsor Castle facing the lady who has reigned over the commonwealth for the last 70 years he was, as he admitted to a source, "nervous."

" I really admire Queen Elizabeth," Tom said. "We can all learn lessons from her, and she is such a vibrant lady with a zest for life that really is addictive. But, you know, despite all the films and success, this was a ‘moment,’ as they say, and thankfully all went well. But when you look at who she has met across the decades you do think, ‘Why did they ask me?’"

Tom proved a great and affable emcee, plus added that international glamour to the event, which really helped ratings bust through the roof. However, Tom has had previous engagements with royals, and this could be the reason why he was invited by the queen to host.

In 2017, Tom made a huge impression on the late Duke of Edinburgh. Both men were supporters of the Outward Bound trust, an educational charity that seeks to improve the lives of children and young people through outdoor activities and learning. They attended a dinner hosted at Buckingham Palace to honor the 75th anniversary of the U.K.-based organization.

And they got on like old chums, with Philip laughing out loud many times at the event, cementing his place in the royal circle. The queen noted that and kept it by for this massive royal year.

Tom also became chums with the late Princess Diana when Tom was married to Nicole Kidman. The pair had met the princess at a screening of "Far and Away" in 1992, and Tom told me he was "devastated" by her passing.

"She was a magical person and really engulfed you with her personality," he said.

Diana also loved the movie original, "Top Gun," and would often watch it on video at Kensington Palace with both Princes William and Harry.

Tom's 60th birthday on July 3 marked a major milestone in an extraordinary life, one at the very top of the movie business. But the biggest question on everyone’s lips here recently in the U.K. was: Did the Duchess of Cambridge and Tom Cruise break royal protocol?

This was because the ever gallant Tom offered assistance on the stairs for the Duchess Catherine as she ascended in towering glam heels.

As Tom pointed out, "It's natural right? And it's what my mom taught me to do — be a gentleman and offer assistance. It was a moment thing. And, honestly, I did not see anything wrong in it, yet we did giggle about it afterwards simply because, well I should have remembered."

When I spoke with Tom recently, he wouldn’t weigh in on whether William and Catherine will attend his U.K.-based birthday party, but he hopes they do "if they could spare the time."

Tom knows that the royal premiere of his new movie, which shot to No. 1 around the world, is all thanks to them.

" People love the British royals as do I , and I am aware they brought so much focus onto the event of which I am so grateful and well happy beyond words," Tom revealed to a source.

Tom has asked all guests for no presents as "I truly have enough. I mean I don’t need anything. So donations to my charities is what would make me most happy, and I check in with them all the time."

Tom admitted 60 sounds like, "Wow, you know." But as Tom hits that milestone this weekend, it's clearly the start of something big even after all these years still the No. 1 box office star in the world and now with the royal seal of approval too.

Happy Birthday, Tom.

As Tom Cruise turns 60, here are the action star's health and wellbeing secrets

Here's how the hollywood actor keeps his body and brain in shape. by katie wright.

Scaling the world's tallest building, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is all in a day's work for Tom Cruise. Training for and performing extreme stunts is part of the 60-year-old actor's fitness regime.

HAVING just starred in the long-awaited Top Gun sequel (a mere 36 years after the original...) and with the seventh Mission Impossible film slated for release in 2023, Tom Cruise is certainly not taking his foot off the pedal as he enters his 60s.

Ever the action hero, Cruise is still performing death-defying feats on the big screen, bringing in the big bucks at the box office, and looking suave on the red carpet.

But how does he do it? To mark Cruise's 60th birthday - which he celebrated on Sunday, July 3 - we take a look at all the ways the A-list actor maintains his impressive physical and mental health...

A VARIED EXERCISE REGIME

Cruise is a fitness fanatic, and has said he travels with a gym to every set - something he calls the 'pain cave'. In addition to weighted workouts and hitting the treadmill, he incorporates a variety of pursuits into his fitness routine - such as sea-kayaking, caving and fencing.

Mixing up your workouts means you use more muscle groups, and can also improve your coordination - while adventurous sports can result in a powerful adrenaline and endorphin rush.

DOING HIS OWN STUNTS

As well as enjoying adrenaline-fuelled activities in his downtime, Cruise famously performs all his own stunts on-screen.

From scaling the world's tallest building - the Burj Khalifa in Dubai - and flinging himself out of planes, to underwater stunts and sword fighting scenes, these epic endeavours take Cruise's fitness regime to a whole new level.

LEARNING NEW SKILLS

Not only do the actor's film roles keep him physically fit, but it seems like he takes any opportunity to learn new skills and stay mentally agile.

Marshall Herskovitz, producer on The Last Samurai, told LiveAbout how Cruise readied himself for his starring role: "Tom threw himself wholeheartedly into the preparation. I've never seen an actor do as much research for a film. He had a library of information and was amazingly helpful."

When The Late Late Show host James Corden asked the actor how many licences he possesses, Cruise said: "...Airplanes, commercial licence jets, a bunch of different airplanes, motorcycles, parachutes, boats, I have my real estate license, mechanic license, scuba diving license..."

LOW-CARB DIET

It was rumoured in 2020 that Cruise had adopted a low-calorie, low-carb diet devised by his ultra-fit pal David Beckham, allegedly restricting himself to 1,200 calories a day in a bid to stay trim.

In 2018, the actor told James Corden about the clever cake-gifting technique he uses to cope with his cravings. "I love sugar, but I can't eat it because when I'm training, I'm doing all these movies - so I send it to everyone," he said on The Late Late Show.

DETERMINATION

Famous for his unparalleled work ethic, Cruise isn't easily deterred by anything life throws at him.

He said in an interview with Men's Health: "I don't invalidate it when I can't do something... I say, 'That's interesting' and go with it. It's from there you get your energy."

Whether it's a sporting activity, learning a language or taking up a new hobby, having grit and determination means you could be more likely to achieve your goals, and reap the mental and physical rewards.

At 60, Tom Cruise is Hollywood's best-dressed veteran

By Zak Maoui

At 60-years old Tom Cruise has been slaying in a series of impressive, fuss-free fits that just work for the Top Gun: Maverick superstar

Having just celebrated his 60th birthday, Tom Cruise is still shining in the style stakes. Take for instance the actor's recent press tour for the record-breaking hit that was Top Gun: Maverick . Not only did he flex a gym-honed bod that rivalled that of the one he flaunted way back in Risky Business , he also demonstrated the proper way for a man to dress in their autumn years. While Jeff Goldblum is all about in-your-face looks, Cruise is more about super simple outfits, sharply-tailored Brioni suits , with a little flamboyance by way of a velour Tom Ford polo shirt here and there.

It's hardly surprising Cruise is nailing his fits. He had his debut role in 1981's Endless Love , but it wasn't until the release of Risky Business , in which he plays teen Joel Goodson, that things really started to heat up for the actor. Following that breakthrough role, throughout the Eighties and Nineties he was one of the biggest stars of the era, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio. He was also recognised for his daring yet achievable style, which comprised lofty leather jackets, ultra-short shorts and über tight tees, jazzy shirts worn under louche suits and, often, the odd bolo tie.

But it's the latter incarnation of Cruise we're here to celebrate, so here we present to you Tom's most fire fits from recent months to help inform your own wardrobe choices.

Sometimes a simple charcoal knit and a pair of smart tailored trousers just works. No fuss no frills.

Tom Cruise: The Last Movie Star Who Gets Better with Age

Tom Cruise returns to the skies for Top Gun: Maverick, but his movie star persona has never touched the ground since 1986. In fact, it’s flying higher than ever.

Tom Cruise by plane in Top Gun Maverick

It’s not exactly subtle. Appearing in even the first teaser of Top Gun: Maverick —released an astonishing three years ago!— Tom Cruise ’s fighter pilot is getting an epic dressing down from the boss. His superior, Radam. Chester “the Hammer” Cain (Ed Harris), is sick and tired of Maverick’s hot shot ways and insubordination. And he’s here to put the younger man in his place. It’s a scene we’ve witnessed many times, including to iconic effect in the original Top Gun from 1986, and yet the Hammer’s critique of his fiftysomething naval officer is sharper here. More pointed. He is getting at something existential about the trajectory of a man’s life.

“You can’t get a promotion,” Harris’ rear admiral sneers, “you won’t retire, and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now… or a senator. Yet here you are, captain . Why is that?” We then cut to Cruise’s slightly more weathered yet remarkably still boyish face, and he simply teases the outline of a familiar smirk.

The sequence, which comes early in the finished Top Gun: Maverick , is obviously meant to clue us into what its title character has been up to for the past 36 years. But it also works as an admission that Maverick and Cruise’s biographies are entwined. Despite the actor once being weary of doing a Top Gun sequel, and dismissing the idea out of hand in a 1990 Playboy interview, Cruise is back in one of his most beloved roles and doing what he’s always done best: fly really fast planes, drive really fast motorcycles, and look quite cool while doing both.

In many respects, this makes Maverick a rarity: a character study on the life of a movie star who for four decades has operated at the very height of American pop culture and entertainment, and who instead of choosing the path that so many other gifted stars of yesteryear—graduating to the rank of esteemed character actor and a cinematic statesman, becoming a Paul Newman or Robert Redford, who were no strangers to playing senators—he remained the guy in the cockpit, doing it better than anyone his junior. In fact, he’s doing it better than when he was in his junior years.

In this way, it’s interesting that his superiors in Maverick include Harris. The older actor is only 12 years Cruise’s senior and once played globally renowned fighter pilot John Glenn in The Right Stuff (1983). As the years passed, Glenn became a real-life senator, and Harris is now playing an admiral. Similarly, in Cruise’s signature action movie franchise, Mission: Impossible , the star is often reprimanded by IMF Director Alan Hunley, a character played by Alec Baldwin. Also like Cruise, Baldwin came up in the 1980s and starred in his own classic spy thriller, The Hunt for Red October (1990).

Harris and Baldwin both were “promoted” to the role of the proverbial senator. But Cruise? He’s the last and perhaps only living proof that movie star charisma can endure. It can even get better with age.

Once a Different Type of Movie Star

Before Top Gun was released in 1986, the idea of Tom Cruise as the grinning action star did not exist. After Top Gun , Cruise still at least somewhat resisted being placed only in that box. To be sure, he’d already achieved a certain level celebrity before then by appearing in 1983’s surprise hit Risky Business . But while largely remembered today for the innocuous image of Cruise playing a teenager eager to dance to Bob Seger in his underwear, that picture actually remains a moody and surreal thriller about a young kid who is out of his depth when he’s seduced by a call girl into turning the family home into a brothel.

It brought Cruise attention, but it didn’t make him a household name, nor did the similar romantic teen dramas (and one bizarre Ridley Scott fantasy) he made immediately afterward. Top Gun was the inflection point; the picture where Cruise starred in the highest concept Jerry Bruckeheimer and Don Simpson’s hard-partying offices ever came up with in the ‘80s. This blend of fighter jets, postcard sunsets, and well-tanned male bodies went on to become the biggest movie of 1986 too, not to mention the greatest recruitment video the Navy ever had.

As a result, Cruise was a brand, and one as reliable as Coca-Cola. When it came to the biggest hits of his early career— Top Gun , Cocktail (1988), Days of Thunder (1990)—they all followed a pretty familiar formula as outlined by standup comic Rich Hall . Whether he was a fighter pilot or a yuppie mixologist, he was still the same hotshot who needed to be slightly humbled (but never defeated) by the love of a good woman.

Cruise and his agents obviously agreed to all these lucrative box office hits, but even in those heady Reagan years, there was an initial apprehension by Cruise and his team to let the biggest movie star in the world become only that. As a young man, he made a point to star in those guaranteed moneymakers, as well as passion projects by auteurs. He was Paul Newman’s protégé in the Martin Scorsese-directed The Color of Money (1986), and after Oliver Stone’s Vietnam War reverie, Platoon (1986), won Best Picture, Cruise fought to star in Stone’s next film about that nightmare, Born on the Fourth of July (1989). His unexpected casting as Vietnam vet Ron Kovic, who returned from Southeast Asia paralyzed and as an anti-war activist, still remains the best performance in Cruise’s career.

As Cruise’s star status reached its zenith in the 1990s, he continued to try to be both the brand—hence the first Mission: Impossible movie in 1996—and the leading actor who chased auteurs. Stanley Kubrick; Rob Reiner; Neil Jordan; Paul Thomas Anderson; Michael Mann; Cameron Crowe; Steven Spielberg. He worked with all of them in the most prolific period of his career, sometimes in movies that were intended to be blockbusters, such as the sci-fi one-two punch of Minority Report (2002) and War of the Worlds (2005) with Spielberg, or the seminal military courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992) with Reiner. But, generally speaking, he allowed his star status to get weirdly ambitious projects greenlit and marketed like blockbusters due to his participation.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

And, frankly, even the interesting failures in that category—like Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Kubrick’s arguably unfinished final film that was released after his sudden death and which starred Cruise and Nicole Kidman at the end of their marriage—are more captivating than a lot of the well-oiled star vehicles he was doing concurrently, such as the only bad Mission: Impossible movie, M:I-2 from 2000.

Yet all careers ebb and flow, and the natural order of thing for stars, no matter how bright, is to fade—infamously so in Cruise’s case after his personal life came under heavy scrutiny due to his outspoken (and presumptuous) views about psychotropic medication, his very public courtship of his third wife Katie Holmes (who was 16 years younger), and his general participation in the Church of Scientology.

One year after Cruise gained national derision for jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s couch, Mission: Impossible III (2006) underperformed at the box office, and Paramount made no bones about blaming the actor’s off-screen perception. For a time, the studio even seemed ready to terminate Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character.

This was the point an aging movie star would be expected to recline from that status, accept things will never be as they once were, and take on more character roles like Lions for Lambs (2007), the Robert Redford movie in which Cruise played a senator in a supporting role.

The maverick actor, however, would go on to choose a different path.

A Star Is Reborn

There was a time when Paramount Pictures was entirely done with Cruise as the lead of the Mission: Impossible franchise. After the J.J. Abrams-directed M:I-3 earned substantially less than its predecessor from six years earlier, then-Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone told The Wall Street Journal (via Screen Crush ), “We don’t think that someone who effectuates creative suicide and costs the company revenue should be on the lot.” Redstone had Paramount terminate their production deal with Cruise and shutter his office behind the studio’s famous gate. They quite literally pushed the biggest star in the world, who led numerous summer blockbusters for the studio, off the lot.

Typically an event such as this marks the tombstone in a Hollywood lead’s status. It’s the moment where they (and their agent) realize celebrity has waned and it is time for reinvention. But Cruise’s idea of reinvention was not to do a lot more movies like Lions for Lambs ; it ultimately became to do what he had done before… but far better than anyone ever imagined was possible.

Admittedly, the moment of grace and public rehabilitation came from a smaller supporting role, in-keeping with that time he might’ve played a narcissistic motivational speaker in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (1999), except in Tropic Thunder (2008), Cruise’s ability to completely over-commit to a seedy character role was dialed up to 11 in a mainstream comedy where he personified what has long been speculated to be a parody of then-Hollywood power player Scott Rudin (whom Cruise worked with on 1993’s The Firm ). Under pounds of prosthetics and makeup, Cruise looked unrecognizable as Les Grossman, a fictional late 2000s-studio mogul as repugnant as his pun-y name might suggest… and just as entertaining.

The public enthusiasm over Cruise’s Grossman dancing to hip-hop during Tropic Thunder ’s end credits may have been the last of two footholds Cruise had to salvage his stardust. The other was a continued friendship with Abrams, who despite helming the only Mission: Impossible movie to take a bath at the box office came out of the experience smelling like roses to the studio. He even became a golden boy when he reinvented Paramount’s Star Trek franchise in 2009 with the movie that turned it seemingly into a long-running action saga in the Star Wars mold.

It was the success of Tropic Thunder , and Abrams’ wingman-ing, that caused the studio to agree to let Cruise return for M:I-4 … if Cruise also agreed they could cast a new leading man who would be set up to take over the franchise in the following film(s).

If you go back and study the marketing material for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), it’s now amusing how hard Paramount pushed Jeremy Renner as franchise newcomer William Brandt. On the poster, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is intentionally made to look older and weathered for the first time, adorning a hoodie to hide Cruise’s famous black mane of hair. Meanwhile, over his shoulder, stands a crisp and bespoke Renner: a fresh face at the literal right hand. Similarly, almost every trailer concluded with the moment Cruise’s Ethan Hunt pulls a gun on Brandt, and Renner’s new protagonist is able to disarm him and hold Cruise at gunpoint instead. A supposed heir apparent has emerged, or so went the implication. And this one is an Avenger .

Yet something that Paramount’s top brass perhaps did not expect was also emerging in the fourth Mission: Impossible : a middle-aged and chastened Cruise deciding that, with his star status diminished, he’d re-commit to the type of big screen spectacle that made him a household name in the first place. He’d obviously been that guy ever since audiences first got a glimpse of Maverick zooming across a military runway on a motorcycle at sunset in Top Gun . But back then, the motorcycle might’ve been real, and the naval jets definitely were, but Cruise was (almost never) flying in them.

Yet alongside Incredibles director Brad Bird, the middle-aged star now engineered some of the most spectacular stunts ever put to screen in Ghost Protocol , and he did them all. When you see Ethan Hunt pull a proverbial Spider-Man and wallcrawl—and run, and skip—alongside the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, that’s really him doing it. Tobey Maguire used CGI, but Cruise is hanging from a rope as he dangles around a manmade colossus.

Similarly, as an actor previously publicized for doing his own stunts, Cruise used this pivot point in his career to better highlight that fact in long, wide, and dazzling shots that bucked the modern trend of relying on rapid editing. Bird let audiences savor that Cruise is the guy up there. And by the time the actor found his collaborative soulmates in stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood and director Christopher McQuarrie on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), the whole marketing likewise shifted toward that aspect. Entire posters for M:I-5 were nothing more than photographic evidence that Cruise was the one actor seemingly crazy enough to hang from the side of a plane that’s taking off. Meanwhile Renner’s Brandt was reduced to a true supporting role in that one before not appearing at all in 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout .

The First Mission: Impossible Still Has One of the Greatest Action Set Pieces

The last american movie star.

So, yes, Cruise was able to wrestle control back over the Mission: Impossible movies and genuinely make them better than ever, with each of the last three installments surpassing what came before. But more than that, when given the choice of “retirement” or “promotion,” Cruise like Maverick defied the odds and stayed in the cockpit, achieving feats never before seen in his field despite his advancing age.

The context of this in the larger industry is striking. With the infamous exception of 2017’s The Mummy reboot , the 2010s saw an older Cruise retain a commitment to what is obviously traditional blockbuster storytelling. But it is also incredibly well-crafted, intelligent storytelling executed at the peak of Hollywood resources.

Ever since reclaiming Mission: Impossible and his status, the actor has eschewed the auteur projects he coveted in his youth, but the blockbusters he’s doubled down on have improved: Jack Reacher (2012), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), American Made (2017), the three aforementioned M:I movies, and now Top Gun: Maverick are all exceedingly well-made spectacles in which filmmaking craft is at the highest bleeding edge. The emphasis on sharp writing, much of it done by Oscar-winner McQuarrie, is arguably even higher too, which is why McQuarrie became the first director to helm more than one Mission: Impossible movie, and seems poised to draw a curtain on the franchise with the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning two-parter that continues his novel innovation of actually developing Ethan Hunt into a character instead of an archetype.

Latest Movie reviews

Spy x family code: white review – a radical genre pivot for a beloved anime, abigail review: explosive horror that’s buckets of fun, the first omen review: a devilish reinvention of the classic.

In a vacuum, this is impressive. But in contrast with the rest of the industry that is chasing interconnected shared universes in the Marvel Studios vein, and a style that values spectacle generated in a computer (and storytelling that appears to be going in an endless circle), it feels like a life raft. Sometimes the old ways are the best. And while it’s nice that movie stardom is more prolific than ever before with a greater diversity of voices and faces in front of the screen, the entire next generation of “stars” seem obligated to make a Faustian bargain where their success hangs on their likenesses being encased in the plastic uniform of a comic book character.

Conversely, and against all odds, Cruise has maintained his own name as the true brand. Mission: Impossible is technically based on an intellectual property, but you’d be crazier than Hunt if you think its fandom comes from adulation of a 1960s TV show. It’s Cruise’s insistence on maintaining the quality of the writing, the acting, and the stunts which has kept people coming back. Consider that despite the fact he’s pushing 60, Cruise is beloved more than any Hollywood leading man since the days of Douglas Fairbanks for his daredevil antics. It was even while mimicking one of Fairbanks’ between-rooftops leaps in Fallout that Cruise broke an ankle. Nonetheless, they kept filming (the take with his injury is in the finished film) and ultimately incorporated his limp into the movie’s finale.

That style of movie stardom feels like a revenant from the past in the 21st century. That style of stardom felt like a revenant in the late 20th century when Cruise was in his heyday and not actually flying any planes in Top Gun . And yet, as Jennifer Connelly recently attested to us, that’s really him piloting her in a single engine plane in Top Gun: Maverick .

In 2020, Cruise’s intensity came under scrutiny again during the filming of the first forthcoming Dead Reckoning movie. Shooting during the early days of the pandemic—and at a period before there was a vaccine—he apparently was enraged when he saw crew members not practicing social distancing or properly wearing their masks.

“We want the gold standard,” Cruise bellowed. “They’re back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us! Because they believe in us and what we’re doing! I’m on the phone with every fucking studio at night, insurance companies, producers, and they’re looking at us [as the example for how] to make their movies.”

Overly harsh? Maybe. Indicative of an inflated hero complex? Most probably. But proof of an ironclad dedication to the art and commerce of moviemaking in the old school Hollywood sense? Absolutely.

Once, in a different era, Cruise starred opposite another movie star who was at a transition point in his career, Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men . In that movie’s classic finale, which was penned by a young Aaron Sorkin, Cruise’s Lt. Daniel Kaffee attempts to get Nicholson’s Col. Nathan R. Jessep to confess culpability in a crime. It’s most famous now for Cruise finally shouting, “I want the truth,” and Nicolson screaming in response, “You can’t handle the truth!”

Yet there’s another gem of a line in this sequence where Nicholson, justifying his hardline tactics, explains, “We live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded… you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.”

For about 40 years, Cruise has stood on a wall of his own, and he may very well be the last man up there in 2022. One day, as Harris’ rear admiral suggests in Top Gun 2 , he will have to retire and come on down. Moviegoers will be the poorer for it. But not today. Today, the wall looks taller than ever.

The Transformation Of Tom Cruise From 21 To 58 Years Old

Tom Cruise posing in 1981

There's a lot that can be said about Tom Cruise . The star is a Golden Globe-winning actor, producer, and dad of three . Cruise is known in Hollywood as one of the highest-paid stars, and he's held that status for decades.

Cruise is the only son of four children, who was raised by his mom, Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and dad, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, where he lived for 11 years, but Cruise moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, with his mother following his parents' divorce in 1973, per IMDb .

As a kid, Cruise struggled to fit in, and in school, he spent his years trying to hide his dyslexia, which he was diagnosed with at age 7. The actor once described his younger self as "functionally illiterate" (via Dyslexiahelp.umich.edu ), but fortunately, he excelled in sports. In fact, he once considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling, but he suffered a knee injury during high school that , per Biography .

After a teacher encouraged Cruise to join the school's production of the musical "Guys and Dolls," he fell in love with acting, and well, the rest is history. Since then, Cruise has captivated audiences around the globe, and his transformation is nothing short of amazing.

Tom Cruise sets off to New York City with dreams of becoming a star

Tom Cruise had big plans to become a Hollywood star, and he set off to New York City with his dreams at the forefront. Though he struggled to get his career off the ground in the beginning, he persevered and kept auditioning before landing his debut gig in 1981's "Endless Love," starring icon Brooke Shields. That same year, he appeared alongside Sean Penn in "Taps."

By 1983, Cruise was establishing himself as an up-and-coming heavyweight, snagging roles in 1983's "Losin' It," "Risky Business," and "The Outsiders." He portrayed the character of Steve Randle, a member of the group of young actors dubbed the "Brat Pack," with Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, and Rob Lowe. Though "The Outsiders" didn't receive the praise it was hoping, the gig led to roles in 1985's "Legend," and ultimately, his iconic starring appearance in 1986's " Top Gun ."

"Top Gun," which became the highest-grossing film of that year (via Chicago Tribune ), confirmed Cruise's status as an A-list actor and catapulted the star into a life of fame and superstardom. According to Box Office Mojo , the action-romance flick, which follows the story of Cruise's character, Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, as he joins an elite naval flight school, has earned more than $176 million in the box office to this day.

Tom Cruise becomes one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors by the 1990s

With "Top Gun" on his résumé, Tom Cruise established himself as a Hollywood hotshot, and by that time, he was making the big bucks. In the late 1990s, Cruise snagged the title of one of showbiz's highest-paid actors in the world, according to Celebrity Net Worth .

The handsome heartthrob had already earned $9 million for 1990's "Days of Thunder" and another $15 million for his work on "Interview With the Vampire" in 1994, but his bank account skyrocketed when he landed the starring role in "Mission Impossible" in 1996. Entertainment Weekly reported he "pocketed $70 million" for the hit action film, and he also "negotiated a chunk of 'Mission's' overall $465 million gross."

Cruise's monetary gain is so impressive that a report from Casumo claims he pockets more than $7,000 per word. "When taking into account everything he's been in for almost 40 years, supposedly it's as much as $7,091 per word," CinemaBlend reported in April 2020.

But, while Cruise has more money than one could ever imagine, the producer knows he has earned every dollar in his $600 million fortune. "I get paid because I'm worth it and they should pay me that much. But I've never done work for money, ever," he shared with Vanity Fair in 2000 (via The Uncool ). "It is my life, it is what I do, it is what I love to do."

Tom Cruise falls in love with Nicole Kidman and starts a family

As he was cementing his place in the entertainment industry, Tom Cruise was also experiencing changes in his love life. The star walked down the aisle with his first wife, Mimi Rogers , in 1987, and they were together for three years. After they split in 1990, though, Cruise was not single for long, as he developed a deep bond with Nicole Kidman when they met on the set of "Days of Thunder."

Cruise wasn't the only one who was instantly smitten. "He swept me off my feet," Kidman recalled to Vanity Fair in December 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love." Later that year, Cruise and Kidman said "I do," and by 1995, they were the parents of their adopted kids, daughter Isabella Jane Cruise and son Connor Cruise .

Over the next few years, Cruise and Kidman raised their kids while juggling their busy careers as Hollywood stars. In 1997 and 1998, they worked together on "Eyes Wide Shut," an erotic thriller directed by legend Stanley Kubrick. The actor landed other gigs, including 1999's "Magnolia" — which earned him a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor — followed by "Mission: Impossible II" in 2000 (via IMDb ).

Just one year later, though, Cruise experienced turmoil in his personal life as he and Kidman split in 2001. Per Entertainment Weekly , the "Vanilla Sky" lead filed for divorce , citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason.

Tom Cruise marries wife No. 3 Katie Holmes

Following his split from Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise fixated his focus on his acting career, and throughout the early 2000s, he balanced several roles in "Minority Report," "Austin Powers in Goldmember," and "Collateral." By April 2005, Cruise's personal life started making headlines once again when he publicly debuted his relationship with Katie Holmes .

While many speculated their romance was a publicity stunt, as Cruise was starring in "War of the Worlds" while Holmes was cast as the lead in "Batman Begins," they proved how serious they were when they got engaged less than two months later in June, per The Hollywood Reporter . Before they got the chance to walk down the aisle, though, Cruise expanded his family when Holmes gave birth to their daughter, Suri Cruise , in April 2006.

The duo wed seven months later in November, marking Cruise's third trip down the aisle. Marrying the Hollywood hunk was an unbelievable moment for Holmes, who told Seventeen magazine she "used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise" as a little girl (via The Hollywood Reporter). However, their romance eventually came to end in June 2012 when Holmes filed for divorce. At the time, Cruise's attorney called their split "a private matter," adding the actor's No. 1 priority was their "daughter's best interests" (via People ).

Tom Cruise focuses on his career, Scientology, and love

Following his a string of unsuccessful marriages, Tom Cruise became much more guarded in terms of his personal life. By 2016, Cruise sold both his L.A. mansions and purchased a penthouse in Clearwater, Florida, to focus on his work as a Scientologist. According to People , the home happens to be just one block away from the Church of Scientology's international headquarters.

Cruise has been a committed member of the controversial church since 1990, per Insider , and his involvement has been debated for years, especially since a source told Us Weekly in July 2019 that he's "not allowed" to see Suri. Regardless of the claims, plus the fact that Cruise has not been seen in public with Suri since 2013 , the Church fought back, telling Us, "Everything about your inquiry misrepresents the Church of Scientology."

These days, Cruise is also heavily involved in Hollywood, as he's set to star in several upcoming films . Most impressively, he's cast in an untitled project that will be filmed in space, per The Space Shuttle Almanac (via The Independent ).

Cruise isn't just busy in his professional life, though. The actor is reportedly dating actress Hayley Atwell . The two met on the set of "Mission: Impossible 7" and "hit it off from day one," The Sun reported in December 2020. "They've become fairly inseparable. They get on brilliantly, and both seem very happy." It looks like Cruise's long and admirable journey has certainly paid off.

Mission Impossible 7 has finished filming

Despite currently filming scenes for Mission Impossible 8, the previous installment is yet to be released.

Tom Cruise talks about filming Mission Impossible

Tom Cruise first starred as Ethan Hunt in the 1996 movie Mission Impossible.

The spy movie, which the actor produced, was a commercial and critical success and was the third highest-grossing film that year.

In a recent interview, he spoke about creating the movie in a clip via GamesRadar .

“I looked at Paramount, and I thought what I wanted to produce was something – I looked at it in many different ways… I wanted something that was going to be very commercial, potentially, but I wanted something that was going to be artistically challenging,” Cruise explains.

In an interview about the film, Tom Cruise explained the movie’s challenges in several countries.

“What is the challenge of this thing going to be? I wanted it to be an international film, and an international cast,” Cruise adds. “Which at that time was different. I wanted to shoot it in England… I remember they said, ‘Can’t you shoot it in LA, or New York?’ And I was like, ‘No, I actually, I want to go to London.'”

In addition, the busy actor is also promoting the upcoming movie Top Gun: Maverick, which is scheduled for release next year.

Suri Cruise, 18, has shunned dad Tom for years after being gifted millions in spoilt childhood… can they ever heal rift?

  • Hayley Minn , Features writer

AT the age of three, she was named “Hollywood’s Hottest Tot” by Forbes and had a designer wardrobe worth £2 million, complete with sparkly kitten heels.

But Suri Cruise , who turns 18 today, couldn’t have a more different life now after she shunned her father Tom , 61, and the limelight, following his divorce from Katie Holmes , 45, when she was just five years old.

Suri Cruise was the most famous toddler in Hollywood

Katie gained sole custody of Suri after the 2012 split, along with a generous settlement which saw Tom paying a reported £325,000 a year for his daughter’s care.

As rumours swirled about the cause of the split — with the finger pointed firmly at Tom’s association with the religion Scientology — Suri and Katie went off radar for years, rebuilding their lives in New York , 2,400 miles away from Los Angeles -based Tom.

Under the watchful eye of her protective mum, she hasn’t spoken to or seen her movie-star dad since Christmas 2013.

But with any deal made between Katie and Tom expiring today as Suri turns 18, will she finally break her silence on their estranged relationship?

When Tom and Katie first got engaged in June 2005, after an eight-week whirlwind romance where he flew her off for dinner dates in his private jet, it seemed like a dream romance for both stars.

Tom famously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey ’s sofa declaring his love for Katie that year.

And Katie, while previously engaged to actor Chris Klein in the early 2000s, had even told Seventeen magazine: “I think every girl dreams about her wedding. I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.”

Suri was born seven months before their lavish wedding in 2006, which took place at a castle in Rome, costing over $3million, in front of celebrity pals including Jennifer Lopez , Will Smith and Jim Carrey .

The young tot quickly became the most famous child in Hollywood, making her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair just a few months later and being constantly photographed.

While many kids grow up sharing a room with their siblings, Suri had an entire wing of her parents’ Los Angeles mansion to herself, decked out with a state-of-the-art music system and home cinema - and a personal chef on call at all times.

For her second birthday, Suri’s sole wish was to “wear a butterfly dress”.

Her parents took her typical childlike request much further, splashing out £60,000 on a birthday party for just 24 guests, which included a four-tier birthday cake and the casual release of hundreds of live butterflies.

She hasn't spoken to her dad since 2013

By the age of three, Suri had no official bedtime - and a wardrobe estimated at £2million which included sparkly kitten heels.

In 2009, she was seen on a five-hour shopping spree with her mum and an entourage of bodyguards, buying clothes and toys costing just under £6,000.

But shortly after Suri turned five, TomKat and Suri’s seemingly perfect life came crashing down, as Katie left Tom - with reports claiming she wanted to take her daughter away from Scientology.

What is Scientology?

THROUGHOUT the world, there are roughly 4,200 religions and among them is Scientology, founded in the 1950s by the late Dr. Lafayette Ronald Hubbard.

By definition,  Scientology  is, “the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life.”

Like Christianity, Scientology is another religion but instead of focusing on a God, those who practice focus on the science of the mind with the goal of spiritual enlightenment and freedom.

Those who believe in Scientology are known as Scientologists - they believe in an immortal spirit and in improving their spirit while on Earth.

The religion does not focus on a Heaven or Hell, instead it focuses on the spirit and mind.

When the first Scientology church was open in 1954, it was met with backlash in regard to its legitimacy as those in the medical community have long challenged the ideas behind it.

Despite its reputation, CNN reported that the religion has over 10,000 churches, missions and groups that operate out of 167 countries.

In 2017, at least 4.4 million people were signing up every year.

Actress  Leah Remini  was also known for practicing the religion but in 2013, she announced that she had left the church and later released a book and documentary series about her experiences.

Like Remini, actress Laura Prepon had also practiced the religion until she revealed in August 2021 that  she quit.

Tom was filming in Iceland in 2012 when Katie phoned to say she wanted a divorce and would be taking their daughter away from LA and the Scientology Celebrity Centre, a hotel-style complex, where they lived.

The terms of their divorce settlement are ultra secret but documents show Tom agreed to pay Katie £325,000 a year until Suri turned 18, as well as all of his daughter’s expenses, including college fees.

Katie is also reportedly believed to have signed multiple non-disclosure documents that prevent her from ever talking about her marriage to Tom and her time inside Scientology.

However, unlike her mother, Suri, a now legally-declared adult by the state of New York, is in theory allowed to speak freely about her father and his beliefs.

A source previously told MailOnline: "Suri does not know her father anymore and she has not spent time with him in a decade.

"She does not go to see his movies and he has no part in her life."

Suri would often be seen on shopping sprees for very expensive clothes

Tom is still close to his older children - Isabella, 31, who lives a quiet life in London, and son Connor, 29, a fishing guide in Florida - who are both believed to be involved in Scientology.

He adopted them with second wife, actress Nicole Kidman , 56, who filed for divorce in 2001 after 11 years of marriage and has reportedly not spoken to Tom for more than 20 years.

Like Katie and Suri, she cut all ties with the actor.

However, despite neither Isabella or Connor having been seen in public with Nicole in recent years, it does seem like there is some communication between them, as Isabella has 'liked' her mum's recent Instagram posts.

Suri's new life

As soon as she divorced Tom, Katie returned all of Suri's designer gifts

Meanwhile, Suri’s life couldn’t be more different now.

A far cry from being “Hollywood’s Hottest Tot,” Suri has rarely been seen in public since she moved away from Hollywood to Manhattan, New York, and had a much more down-to-earth upbringing.

As soon as her parents' divorce was finalised - and Katie had got custody - she gave Suri’s life an overhaul, putting a stop to the luxury clothes, even “returning unsolicited gifts and loans from designers”.

Before they split, Suri was often pictured wearing nail varnish and lipstick, but that was also stopped by Katie once they’d moved away from Tom.

A source told Vogue: “All that inappropriate dress-up and makeup was down to Tom.”

[Suri] has to make her bed, she has to take her dishes to the sink, she has to put her clothes in the laundry Katie Holmes

Katie once revealed that they have a very structured schedule at home, complete with a list of chores Suri must do.

’’She has to make her bed, she has to take her dishes to the sink, she has to put her clothes in the laundry,” she told Marie Claire.

After being homeschooled at first, Suri was sent to a Catholic school, instead of attending a Scientology school like her older half-siblings. Her school was high on discipline, including attending mass every Thursday.

In a bid to keep her feet on the ground, Katie has ensured Suri has also spent plenty of time in her own hometown of Ohio, surrounded by her grandparents and aunts.

“They are a close-knit family and have done everything they can to be there for her and to help with her upbringing,” a source told US magazine.

Katie and Suri have even given back, volunteering together in a refugee camp, in Greece, in 2019.

At the time, Katie said: “I enjoy volunteering with my daughter and hearing her point of view and listening to her suggestions on how we can help.”

Suri - who is celebrating her 18th birthday in New York while her dad films an upcoming Mission Impossible movie in London - is now thinking about her future.

She is said to be thinking about going to fashion college in New York, "leaning towards" Fordham University - with Katie heavily involved in helping her daughter with the application.

Tom Cruise  goes above and beyond when it comes to giving gifts and his generosity has been highlighted ahead of his daughter, Suri's 18th birthday .

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar , Tom's former co-star, Dakota Fanning, revealed she's received a birthday gift from him every year since they starred in War of the Worlds together.

At the time, Dakota was 11 years old and she recently turned 30 — and he didn't forget that milestone either.

"Tom sends me a birthday gift every year, and has since that birthday," she told the outlet. "30, I got a birthday gift. So thoughtful, yeah really really nice."

Tom also gave Dakota her first cell phone and she remembers it like it was yesterday.

Dakota - who played Tom's character, Ray Ferrier's daughter, Rachel in the science fiction movie - confession comes after her milestone birthday and ahead of Siri's who turns 18 on April 18.

Tom is believed to be estranged  from his youngest child. After his divorce from Katie Holmes in 2012, she was granted full custody of her only child, and as part of their settlement Tom agreed to pay $400,000 per year in child support to his ex for Suri's upbringing.

However, that agreement lasts until Suri turns 18, and is set to expire this week, after 12 years of payments, which roughly equate to $33k a month in child support.

Katie did not ask for spousal support in their divorce.

It is reported that Tom also pays for Suri's insurance bills and contributes to her college tuition.

Siri is expected to leave the home she shares with her mom in New York this fall when she will start college.

Katie adores motherhood and while she's kept Suri out of the spotlight, she's spoken about parenting and her love for her daughter in interviews.

"Motherhood means everything to me," she said in an interview with People  on 2014. "I'm learning every day, and I have been since the minute I became a mom."

She's also opened up about Suri's personality, telling  Instyle :   "I love her so much.  My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it.

Tom Cruise Was Once Considered For Iron Man, But There Was Another Superhero Movie He Also 'Flirted' With

Two very different flavors of Cruise could have been present in the world of comic movies.

Tom Cruise in Collateral and Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen, pictured side by side.

You don’t get to be an acting talent like Tom Cruise without racking up an obscene amount of “what if” stories. While we know the man as the lead of the Mission: Impossible movies , and a stunt performing daredevil extraordinaire, there were a couple times in his career that comic book movies came a calling.

And while we already know about Cruise’s potential role in the then developing Iron Man franchise, it turns out that Zack Snyder’s Watchmen was apparently another project that could have seen the star of some of the best action movies in the world playing an anti-hero.

The Watchmen cast

The Watchmen Characters Tom Cruise Was Considered For

As if Zack Snyder’s bombshell about Leonardo DiCaprio being considered for the role of Lex Luthor wasn’t enough of a shock, the director’s Happy Sad Confused interview also yielded this juicy gem. And apparently, while the Rebel Moon director wanted Tom Cruise to play one role, the man behind Ethan Hunt was gunning for the polar opposite. Take a look for yourself:

Tom Cruise wanted to be in WATCHMEN. But only as…wait for it…Rorschach. Another bombshell @ZackSnyder dropped in our chat. The full chat: https://t.co/qDTvcxgxfu pic.twitter.com/uLeM7UMESw April 18, 2024

I’m going to set aside the fact that, like Josh Horowitz, I consider the casting of Watchmen to be perfect. I can’t see either Jackie Earle Haley or Matthew Goode not playing Rorschach or Ozymandias at this point, but for the sake of academic curiosity, I’m going to pretend I can. With that caveat in place, I’d honestly have a hard time picking which role Tom Cruise would be better suited for.

Cruise’s Rorschach feels like it’d be a modified version of his Vincent character from Collateral , whereas Ozymandias would be a variation on his aloof killer archetype as Lestat from Interview with the Vampire . That second scenario would have been a particularly good showcase for Tom, as that character basically launches into a Watchmen ending explained monologue in the third act.

Both characters hold echoes of some of Tom Cruise's best movies. So to all of a sudden hear that Zack Snyder had met with the man to try and cast him in this epic comic adaptation has replaced Iron Man as the greater “what if” for Cruise’s potential career in comic movies. Which, after all this time, is no easy feat.

That Time Tom Cruise ‘Flirted’ With Playing Iron Man

If anyone ever wanted to know how forward thinking Tom Cruise is when it comes to movies, consider this: the man was flirting with comic book movies before the boom had truly taken off. While the ultimate reason for Cruise’s Iron Man refusal was classic Hollywood dealing, the man was circling these sorts of opportunities before they were cool.

History shook out the way it did, and Robert Downey Jr .’s iconic casting won out. That hasn’t stopped people from pondering over how a Cruise-led Iron Man could have looked. Especially since, on the Tom Cruise Continuum of Characters, Tony Stark feels like a more cavalier and grown up version of Risky Business’ Joel Goodsen.

Twice before we almost saw Tom Cruise landing a comic book movie icon on his resume; and who knows? We might just see him land that sort of role in the future, provided he wants to go down that road. The Multiverse of both DC and Marvel are vast, and there's surely someone Cruise would be down to play in the name of four paneled fun.

As it stands, the Watchmen we have at home is a sterling example of comic book adaptations done right. So should you want to revisit that movie, with or without visions of Tom Cruise participating, you can do just that. At the time of this publication, a Max subscription is all that’s required to catch up once again with those costumed heroes.

How Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise's relationship with Tom Cruise will change once she turns 18

I t's a big week in the Holmes household, as Katie Holmes' daughter with her ex-husband Tom Cruise , Suri , is poised to turn 18 years old on April 18 , finally entering adulthood.

The actress, 45, and her teen daughter lead their lives away from the spotlight, while Tom, 61, has reportedly been estranged from his youngest for over a decade.

After their divorce in 2012, Katie was granted full custody of Suri, and Tom agreed as part of their settlement to pay $400,000 per year in child support to his ex-wife for Suri's upbringing.

However, that agreement lasts until Suri turns 18, and is set to expire this week, after 12 years of payments, which roughly equate to $33k a month in child support (Katie did not ask for spousal support in their divorce).

While it is reported that Tom might still pay for Suri's insurance bills, plus contribute to her college tuition (as one of the highest paid actors in the world), it seems like the end of his child support might just extinguish one of his last remaining links to his daughter.

Recent reports suggested that Katie was uncomfortable with the end of the payments, but her attorney Jonathan W. Wolfe, Esq., shut those rumors down with a statement to RadarOnline.com back in March by asserting that the actress and filmmaker would not be affected.

"The story is riddled with falsehoods," he shared. "One would hope there would be more newsworthy items to cover, and publications would avoid reporting as 'facts' claims from anonymous sources peddling such obvious misrepresentations."

Suri is also reportedly poised to be heading off to college this fall, with her Dawson's Creek star mom being heavily involved in the application process and supporting her big move every step of the way.

The 17-year-old may not be a huge fan of the spotlight , but she's taking after her famous parents when it comes to her creative abilities, having contributed to her mom's productions with her vocal stylings on multiple occasions, most recently 2023's Rare Objects , which was Katie's third directorial venture.

"I hope she always does something on my films," the proud mom gushed. "I always ask her. But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people. "So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly. That's how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling. It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she's my heart."

She described being a mom to a teenage girl as wanting to "protect" her, adding: "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her. I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

Entertainment | more than 20 previously uncounted ballots discovered during congressional district 16 recount, entertainment, entertainment | tom cruise’s daughter suri will soon be free to talk about their estrangement and scientology: report, with suri cruise turning 18 this week, she should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, a scientology expert says in a new report.

Tom Cruise’s three ex-wives, Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, probably would have a lot to say about being married to the famously intense mega-star and their time inside his beloved Church of Scientology.

But these women have mostly kept Cruise’s secrets, with experts in the inner workings of Scientology saying that Kidman and Holmes, in particular, probably signed non-disclosure agreements when their marriages to the “Top Gun” actor ended.

But no such agreement probably applies to Cruise’s youngest child, Suri Cruise, from whom he’s long been estranged, Page Six reported . With Suri turning 18 on Thursday, she and her mother Katie Holmes should no longer receive the reported $400,000 a year Cruise paid as part of a divorce settlement. Cruise also agreed to pay Suri’s college and health care costs, Page Six added.

As an adult, Suri Cruise should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, journalist and Scientology expert Tony Ortega told Page Six.

“Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement (when her parents divorced in 2012), but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say,” Ortega said.

Page Six said that representatives for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s possible that Suri may choose to stay silent about her famous father. For one thing, if she gave an interview or published a tell-all about him, she’d probably have to give up the mostly private life she’s been able to enjoy thus far. People credit a protective Holmes with trying to give Suri as normal life as is possible under the circumstances, while raising her in New York City.

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” a source told Page Six. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Suri’s life, though, started out in a very public way. As Page Six pointed out, she was once “the most famous baby in America” because of the very high-profile way that Cruise conducted his courtship of the “Dawson’s Creek” star, who was 16 years younger that Cruise when they began dating. When news came that Cruise and Holmes had become parents to a baby daughter in April 2006, a global frenzy erupted, with media outlets competing to be the first to publish the little girl’s photos.

At the age of five months, Suri Cruise made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, in a glossy photo taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

For the first six years of Suri’s life, Cruise seemed to dote on his youngest daughter and enjoy being seen with her in public. He also is the father of two older children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor Cruise, now 29, whom he adopted with Kidman.

But Suri’s relationship with her father changed after Holmes reportedly “blindsided” him by filing for divorce in 2012. The following year, Cruise gave a deposition in his $50 million court fight against a pair of tabloid magazines and admitted that Holmes filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed, Page Six reported.

There have been questions about whether Holmes and her daughter were declared Scientology “suppressive persons,” or SPs, after the divorce. According to Scientology , SPs are people who have “anti-social” personalities who seek to “upset, continuously undermine, spread bad news about and denigrate betterment activities and groups.” Scientology recommends that members stay away from SPs for their own well-being, but the church’s own website said it is “extremely rare” to label someone an SP.

“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega told Page Six. A regular church member, whose wife and daughter left Scientology, would be encouraged to disconnect from them, but Cruise might have been spared that option because of his “top celebrity” status. “He gets to ignore all this stuff,” Ortega said.

In any case, Holmes secured sole custody of their daughter, while Cruise retained “meaningful” visitation rights, according to The Blast . Yet, public sightings of Cruise with his daughter soon dwindled, with Page Six saying they were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

Even if Suri has lived a mostly private life, paparazzi are known to follow her and her mother Katie Holmes around the streets of Manhattan. Still, as Suri reportedly prepares to head off to college, Holmes revealed in a 2023 interview with Glamour that she has grown up to be “an incredible person.”

Suri Cruise celebrates her 18th birthday in rainy NYC as estranged dad Tom works in London

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Suri Cruise was photographed celebrating her 18th birthday in New York City while her estranged father, Tom Cruise, worked abroad in London.

According to pictures obtained by Page Six, the birthday girl stepped out in the rainy weather with a friend on Thursday. The pals chatted as Suri held a pink umbrella over their heads.

The teen, who is also the daughter of Katie Holmes, wore jeans, a denim jacket over a brown shirt and black shoes. She carried a blue backpack and held what looked like a birthday gift in her hand.

A day before Suri’s big day, her father, Tom, was spotted overseas in London filming a new project.

The “Mission Impossible” star, 61, flashed a wide grin as he arrived at a helipad and piloted a jet.

Tom and his youngest daughter have not had a close relationship over the past years. In fact, a source exclusively told Page Six earlier this month that the movie star has not seen Suri since 2012 (they were last seen together at Disney World that summer).

Holmes, who filed for divorce from Tom when Suri was only 6 years old in June 2012, previously told Glamour that she wanted to keep her daughter out of the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

The 45-year-old also revealed in November 2013 court docs that she filed for divorce from Tom “to protect Suri from Scientology ,” a religion that is often referred to as a cult.

While it is believed that Holmes signed several non-disclosure agreements to prevent her from speaking about her marriage to Tom and the Church of Scientology, Suri will be free to discuss the religion and her father now that she is legally an adult.

Though it’s unclear whether the teen will publicly speak about her father, she won’t be joining Scientology anytime soon.

“Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be … she deserves love and sympathy,” former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder told Page Six.
