Bataan province is recorded in Philippine history as the site of major battles fought during World War II. It was one of the major strongholds of the American and Filipino forces against the invading Japanese.

Thousands of troops perished before the former surrendered, commencing the infamous Bataan Death March. It is considered one of the major atrocities of the war.

Unknown to many; however, Bataan offers more than its historical significance and the heroism and resilience of its people. It is also one of the best ecotourism sites in the Philippines, owing to its dense forests, towering waterfalls, pristine hiking trails, stunning beaches, and off-beaten coves.

Here are the must-see attractions to consider when planning your itinerary to Bataan.

1. Pawikan Conservation Center

The Pawikan Conservation Center aims to promote the conservation of the endangered Philippine pawikan (sea turtle). It has facilities for the hatching and healing of turtles, including programs and projects to protect these from illegal activities.

Visiting the center during the months of August until February will give you the chance to witness female turtles returning to the shore to lay eggs. You can also volunteer to patrol the shores to help protect the eggs.

The locals celebrate the week-long Pawikan Festival in November. During this time, you can take part in the release of turtle hatchlings back to the sea.

The center is one of the most visited tourist spots in Morong, Bataan.

2. Mount Samat Shrine of Valor

Standing on the peak of Mt. Samat, the Shrine of Valor is one of the recognized historical tourist spots in Bataan.

Otherwise known as the “Dambana ng Kagitingan,” the Shrine of Valor commemorates the heroism of both Filipino and American forces during the Japanese invasion of World War II.

A memorial cross that is 301-feet tall dominates the shrine, along with stunning sculptures of historical events in the Philippines.

Aside from its historical significance, the Shrine of Valor offers a spectacular view of Manila Bay and the surrounding mountains of Bataan.

3. Dunsulan Falls

Dunsulan Falls is one of the most accessible falls in Bataan, cascading beautifully on the foot of Mount Samat.

With a height of about 20 feet, Dunsulan Falls raging waters carved a shallow circular pool surrounded with basalt columns. You can climb on one of the surrounding cliffs and plunge into the deep pool.

Aside from hiking, try maximizing your experience of the falls by riding the zipline from “Dambana ng Kagitingan.”

5. Mount Natib

Mount Natib is one of the best-hiking tourist spots in Bataan, giving you the chance to trail on tropical jungles and chance on a myriad of flora and fauna species. It is a dormant volcano that rises to more than 1,287 meters above sea level.

7. Bataan National Park

Bataan National Park is one of the most preserved tourist spots in Bataan. One of Central Luzon’s last ecological frontiers is home to vast dipterocarp forests with rich biodiversity.

Numerous wildlife species, including giant fruit bats, deer, civet cats, eagles, and monkeys, live here. The park covers more than 23 688 hectares.

Hiking at the park will give you the chance to view its hidden waterfalls, giant century-old trees, different orchid species, and crystal-clear streams and rivers.

If you’re lucky, you’ll chance on Rafflesia Flowers, the biggest in the world.

8. Balanga Wetland and Nature Park

The Balanga Wetland and Nature Park are one of the protected tourist spots in Bataan. It serves as a sanctuary for various species of migratory birds.

To date, more than 35 species of birds that belong to 15 bird families have been spotted in the park.

Aside from birdwatching, the park gives you a view of wetlands, mudflats, and mangrove forests. It’s best to come here during the early morning to glimpse the birds.

9. Five Fingers Cove

Aptly named as such because the site resembles the shape of five fingers when viewed from above or even from Google Earth. It is now one of the most visited tourist spots in Mariveles, Bataan.

Visiting the site gives tourists the chance to do cove hopping and experience different features and sceneries.

The coves are called Cochino’s Point, Talaga Point (home to Natsu Lagoon and Apatot Cove), Puntang Mahaba (where Pebble Cave and Nagmandala Rock Formation are located), Naiklec Point, and the Longos Kawayan Point.

In all these, you’ll have the chance to enjoy powdery beaches, cliff diving, and boat riding in one stop.

10. Corregidor Island

Corregidor Island is actually a part of Cavite province, but people associate it more with Bataan because of its proximity. It’s just some minutes of a boat ride from Bataan.

Getting on the island gives you the chance to walk among historic ruins, war tunnels, giant cannons, and other war materials. If you have the nerve, you can even go ghost-hunting.

11. Mount Mariveles

Mount Mariveles ranks among the most popular hiking destinations in the Philippines. Rising to more than 1,388 meters above sea level, this dormant volcano is also the highest peak in the entire Bataan province.

Cascading elegantly for almost 200 feet, Pasukulan falls lies in the heart of the dense forests of Mt. Natib.

It is considered the tallest fall in Bataan. To get to the falls, you’ll trail across wild jungles and may have a personal encounter with wildlife species, including snakes.

But don’t worry. It’s safe to come here and encounter, as that just adds to the thrill.

14. Filipino-Japanese Friendship Tower

The Filipino-Japanese Friendship Tower is a 27-meter tall structure, symbolizing reconciliation and peace between the two nations. A Japanese Buddhist organization called, Kosei Kai Group, built the tower in 1975.

The tower also features a Buddhist bell and three pillars connected by multi-layer rings. Also known as the Bagac Friendship Bell, the tower represents the renewed friendship between the Filipinos and the Japanese.

It is one of the historical tourist spots in Bagac, Bataan.

15. Fall of Bataan Marker

The Fall of Bataan Marker commemorates April 9, 1942. During this time, Bataan officially succumbed to the Japanese when Major Gen. Edward P. King Jr. of the American forces signed the surrender document.

16. Ambon-Ambon Falls

18. Bataan Technology Park

The Bataan Technology Park is a techno-economic zone serving as a hub for business and employment for the people of Bataan.

It was the home of the Philippine Refugee Processing Center (PRPC), a training and transition center for refugees from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

These refugees left their countries during the Vietnam War. A museum now sits in the park, commemorating the friendship of the Filipinos and the Indochinese refugees.

The park is one of the best places to visit in Bataan.

19. Kairukan Falls

Kairukan Falls is one of the newly-discovered tourist spots in Morong, Bataan, and is rapidly growing attention from the mainstream market. It is one of the highest falls in the province, measuring more than 150 feet high.

Obviously, there are no specific dates on when the eggs will watch, but if you are around the area you can call the center and ask them to update you of possible hatchlings.

The Zero Kilometer Death March Marker (also known as the “KM 0” marker) is a significant historical site located in Mariveles, Bataan. It marks the starting point of the Bataan Death March , a tragic event during World War II where in thousands of Filipinos and Americans were forced to walk from Mariveles (Bataan) to Capas (Tarlac), covering a distance of about 104 kilometers.

If you are coming from Manila, the Philippines capital, traveling short distances by road will already get you to some of the country’s prized destinations. One of them is Bataan province, a premium ecotourism and heritage site located in Central Luzon.

Bataan is an accessible and popular destination and you’ll easily find things to do here. Visitors can easily reach this province from Manila by either public or private transportation. Buses from Cubao to Mariveles or Balanga cost up to around P400 or more one way, depending on where you’re going in the province and if you’ll need transfers. You have the option to take the ferry and substantially reduce travel time to less than an hour. The port where the ferries depart is in Pasay, the fare is P499 if you book online. Bataan’s popularity isn’t just because of its accessibility, but also because it has historical , cultural , and natural attractions .

Pawikan Conservation Center

This center does its part in conserving the sea turtle species that live in the area. Poachers turned conservationists patrol the beach to protect the turtles that lay their eggs on the shore. After the animals lay their eggs, the workers and volunteers move the eggs to the Center until they are ready to hatch. You can join the baby turtles’ releasing into the sea during February. The Pag-Asa Pawikan Protection and Conservation Center (3P3C) is in charge of the annual Pawikan Festival.

Hike Tarak Ridge

Nature lovers can enjoy the great outdoors by going on a day trip to Tarak Ridge. This mountain makes you break a sweat to and earn a glimpse of its stunning views. Tarak is part of Mt. Mariveles, and you can follow other trails for a more challenging and longer hike. The ridge has a raw but beautiful, picturesque appearance. You have the option to go to the peak or call it a day after the ridge. There’s a campsite in the Papaya River or along the ridge if you plan to spend the night. To reach the jump-off point, board a bus from Pasay bound for Mariveles and alight at Barangay Alas-asin, fare is approximately P315.

If you’re looking for a quick beach getaway, Morong is the place to go. The cream-colored shore and turquoise waters make for an ideal, relaxing vacation. Go swimming, play volleyball or Frisbee, sunbathe, do water sports or just chill during your stay. Morong is home to many beachfront resorts for different budgets.

Sisiman Bay

This beautiful destination in Bataan has a pebble beach, gorgeous sunset, and fetching picturesque landscapes. Its spectacular cliffs and views of the sea provide you with plenty of photo opportunities. Go on a short walk up to San Miguel Peak for more stunning views of the province. Wait until the blue hour to catch the skies turn into a haze of orange and red before getting dark. Get on a bus bound for Mariveles, and upon reaching the town, hire a tricycle to take you to Sisiman.

Five Fingers

This beach and cove destination got its moniker – you guessed it – because of the finger-like shape it takes. Here you’ll see stunning coves, cliffs and sea views along with beaches that have turquoise waters. The highlights of your trip include the coves and caves of Talain, Pulong Kawayan and Apatot, Laki Beach, Nagbintana Arc, and the cliff diving spot of Tinanlakan. Apatot has a gray sand shore and a beautiful landscape. Laki’s cream-tinged beach makes for an idyllic and relaxing backdrop. Satisfy your thrill-seeking self by jumping off a cliff at Tinanlakan.

There are many tour operators offering day trip packages from Manila. However, DIY is possible. Board a bus bound for Mariveles, the fare is around P315. Once there, hire a tricycle to Porto for P75. At the port, you can hire a boat with boatman/guide for P2500 day trip; P3500 if you want to spend the night.

Bataan is located in Central Luzon . It’s close to our home Angeles City in Pampanga . The capital of Bataan is Balanga. We have been visiting Bataan 3 times so far and today we will write all the amazing Bataan tourist spots.

Batan Travel Guide

How to get to bataan, getting to bataan from clark.

If you are getting to Bataan from Clark. You can ride a van from DAU Terminal in Angeles City. It will take one hour to get to Balanga and the price is 180 PHP . From Clark International Airport you can go by taxi or Grab to DAU Terminal. It will take you around 15-20 minutes to get there and prices can be around 200-300 PHP by Grab and 500 PHP by taxi.

You can also get a jeepney to San Fernando. Once in San Fernando you get the bus going to Balanga 220 PHP .

Getting to Bataan from Manila by Bus

If you are getting to Bataan from Manila by bus. It will take 3-4 hours depending on the traffic and where you catch the bus. If you are coming from Cubao it will take around 3 hours 250 PHP . Genesis and Bataan Transit are the companies going to Bataan from Cubao.

And more than 4 hours 280 PHP if you are coming from Pasay. Genesis buses are going to Bataan from Pasay.

Once in Balanga Terminal you can get a tricycle or a jeepney to move around Bataan. Prices are starting from 10 PHP depending on the distance.

Getting to Bataan from Manila by Ferry

If you are getting to Bataan from Manila by ferry to Orion. It will take you around one hour to get there. The departure of the ferry from Manila is 7 am and 5 pm. It will take 50 minutes and it costs 450 PHP . From Bataan to Manila the schedule is 9 am and 7 15 pm. There are free shuttles going to Dinalupihan and Mariveles in Bataan from Orion.

Getting to Bataan from Manila by Private Transportation

If you are getting to Bataan from Manila by private transportation. It will take you 2 hours and a half to reach there from Manila. You have to drive to North Luzon Expressway and exit in San Fernando and going thru Lubao. Or you can exit in DAU and take the SCTEX on the way to Dinalupihan.

Getting to Bataan from Baguio

If you are getting to Bataan from Baguio. There are also buses from Baguio going to Bataan. It will take 7 hours to reach there and prices are around 500 PHP .

BEST TIME TO VISIT BATAAN

If you’re traveling to Bataan you can expect considerably small changes in the city’s weather. Humidity is high in the Philippines and the warmest months here are April and May. Basically,  January to March is the best time to visit Bataan as this is the sunniest period of the year and is relatively cooler than other months.

DAILY BUDGET TO VISIT BATAAN

Many of the restaurants and hotels in Bataan are inexpensive yet more than satisfying. A full meal in the city can go for as low as 80 PHP  per person while a bottle of beer can be bought for around  50-65 PHP . Restaurant meals can be bought for around  500-800 PHP  for two people. Pretty cheap, right? And if you only have  20 PHP  in your pocket when you’re feeling pretty hungry, you can even buy plenty of street food with that.

Transportation is also cheap with jeepneys and tricycles going all over town. The main problem in transportation there are big distances and the schedule of public buses isn’t very often. Be patient and make sure you go during the day since at night time there are only a few buses and mini buses going to Bataan. If you prefer joining a tour prices are starting at 1300 PHP for a day trip with lunch, entrance fees and transportation included.

There are also budget hotels costing for around  600-900 PHP  in a promo while three-star establishments go for around  1,000-2,000 PHP , that’s only $19-38 USD ! For those who want a more luxurious stay, you can check in at very nice hotels at around  $50-120 USD . You can also try AirBnB in Bataan.

Things to Know Before Visiting Bataan

Smoking isn’t allowed in the streets in Balanga in Bataan. If you do you will get a fine. It’s similar than Davao.

Bataan Technology Park is the former site of the Philippine Refugee Processing Center for Indochinese refugees. They were coming 80% from Vietnam and 20 % between Laos and Cambodia.

The first nuclear power plant in the country named Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. It’s located in Morong.

The Death March was the starting point of World War II. It’s located in Mariveles in Bagac.

The most popular pasalubongs are dry fishes and dry marine products.

TOURS AND ENTRANCE FEES IN BATAAN

If you want to visit Bataan tourist spots the best way to do it is by private transportation. The entrance fee to the Bataan tourist spots are usually between 30-50 PHP , so affordable. If you don’t have private transportation you can join to tours in Bataan tourist office.

There are tours starting from 1300 PHP with guide, lunch, entrance fees included and van with air conditioning. We did ourselves the tour with the Tourism office with Allan as a guide. Everything was well organized and we enjoyed a lot touring around Pawikan Festival. We had time to attend the Festival, beach party, enjoying sunsets and learn about the historical sites in Bataan.

In the tourist office you will find apart from all the detail information with the most modern system to videos about the places to visit in Bataan. There are also souvenirs and it’s so convenient to go before visiting Bataan tourist spots to have the best information. I would say is the first of this list of Bataan tourist spots that you should visit.

BATAAN TOURIST SPOTS

1. food trip in bataan.

First thing that we did and we totally recommend is food trip in Bataan. We started in Wooden Leaf eating healthy food, delicious juices, salads and pasta. It was a perfect start of the day. Hu Tieu-An a Vietnamese restaurant in Balanga Bus Terminal was great. We enjoyed salads, delicious noodle soups and our favorite Bahn Mi (typical sandwich from Vietnam).

2. Bataan World War II Museum

Bataan World War II Museum is located in Balanga City. The museum is a tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Bataan. The entrance fee is 50 PHP .

3. Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor

It’s a Memorial Site for the Filipinos who fought and died in World War II. The cross is 92 meters high and 11 meters wide. You can go up with the elevator and enjoy a 360 degree view of Bataan. The entrance fee is 30 PHP . After the hike you can enjoy the museum on the bottom where you can see pictures about World War II.

4. Zero Kilometer Death March Markers

The monument is located in Mariveles and Bagac. It was the start point of the Death March of American and Filipino soldiers in 1942. You can also find similar markers in San Fernando on the way to Pampanga.

5. Philippine-Japan Friendship Tower

The tower was conceived by Rissho Kosei Kai of Japan in 1975. It’s for simbolizing the reconciliation and friendship between Japan and the Philippines after World War II.

6. Flaming Sword

It’s a symbol of the Filipino courage and gallantry. You can see illuminated at night and it’s located in Pilar town.

7. Surrender Site Monument

You can find the Surrender Site Monument in the Bataan World Museum. It was built as a marker where Major General Edwar P. King signed the insstrument of surrender in 9th of April, 1942.

8. Bataan Technology Park

It become home for refugees of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. 10 000 people coming from Indochina. You can see in the museum the history and how they came thru Palawan to Bataan. It’s located in the hills of Morong. The museum received the visit of Pope John Paul II. The entrance fee is 50 PHP .

9. Enjoying the sunset at the beach

One of our favorite sunsets in the Philippines we enjoyed in Morong Beach. The colors were amazing and if you love sunsets as we do. Make sure you are on time with a beer or a coconut to enjoy.

10. Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is an open-air museum located in Bagac. It’s full of restaurants and there is also a beach. You can stay in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar if you want to have a luxury experience in Bataan. You can also tour around with a river cruise or riding a calesa.

11. Plaza Mayor Balanga City

It’s a commercial area where you can find restaurants and now a new hotel. It’s so beautiful at night with the lights to walk around.

12. Zip Line in Bataan

A 500 meters zip line is waiting for you in Bataan if you love adventure. It’s the longest zip line in Central Luzon. Rachel enjoyed the wide views and after enjoying this experience you can refresh yourself in Dunsulan Falls the ending point of the zip line. The activity costs 350 PHP .

13. Tree Top Adventure

You can also enjoy the Tree Top Adventure after the zip line or after swimming in Dunsulan Falls. It’s located in Morong. The entrance is 50 PHP for the Tree and the waterfalls.

More Bataan Tourist Spots

Limutan Falls are located close to Mount Natib. It’s close to Ambon Ambon Falls. To reach there you have to hike 45 minutes from Linao National Road.

Dunsulan Falls

Dunsulan Falls is a perfect visit after trying the zip line in Bataan. Since is finishing there. A perfect place for relaxing after enjoying this adventure. There is an entrance fee of 50 PHP .

Pasukulan Falls

Pasukulan Falls are located in the Southern part of Mount Natib. You can swim and enjoying activities around.

Kairukan Falls

Kairukan Falls are located at the upper side of Kairukan River. You can swim around and you can even camping if you like to stay longer around the area.

15. Kanawan Hanging Bridge

Kanawan Hanging Bridge is another beautiful Bataan tourist spots that you shouldn’t miss. You can take nice pictures and check the views. No worries is safe even the motorbikes go around. It’s free of charge.

16. Visit Old Churches

Our lady of the pilar church.

It was erected in 1607 from the elements of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque sources. It’s located in Morong.

St Joseph Cathedral

The Cathedral survived to the War that’s why is so popular. It was renovated and it’s located in Balanga City Center.

If you want to have a tour of Historical sites and Churches you can ask for information in the Tourism Office that offer packages of 2 Days starting from 2100 PHP .

17. City of Balanga Wetland & Nature Park

It’s an outdoor museum were you can see the importance of the migratory birds. There is a Festival celebrated every December called Ibong Dayo. You can get a great view of view of Mt. Samat and the Manila Bay.. There are cottages for rent if you wish. The entrance fee is 20 PHP per person.

18. Pawikan Conservation Center

We visited during Pawikan Festival. It’s located in Morong Beach. They are protecting the marine turtles. The Festival is every year in November. The entrance fee is 30 PHP . We took a drone shot where you can see how busy was Pawikan Festival.

19. Mountains of Bataan

Hike tarak ridge.

If you like hiking you can join a two day adventure. You can hike and camping. The peak is 1130 meters above the sea level. If you are planning to hike make sure you get the information in the Tourism Office in Bataan.

Mount Natib

A volcano 1250 meters above sea level where you can see amazing views of Mount Mariveles and Mount Samat.

20. Bataan National Park

Bataan National Park is located Northern half of the Province in the border with Subic in Zambales . You can find waterfalls like Pasukulan and Dunsulan Falls. There are important species of flowers and orchids.

21. Enjoy the Beach in Morong

Make sure that you are bringing your snorkeling mask to swim around the beach in Morong. The beaches are quiet and calm. Most of them are located inside the resorts and they charge around 300-500 PHP entrance fee to spend the day.

22. Beaches in Bagac

You can explore beaches around Bagac: Quinawan Beach, Aglaloma Beach, Laki Beach and Kaibubo Beach on the North.

23. Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach

There is an entrance fee 300 PHP during the day and 400 PHP if you stay overnight. You can go swimming and if you like adventure you can go cliff diving. The name of Five Fingers is because the shape looks like Five Fingers from the top view. The water is so clear and you can swim around.

24. Sisiman Mariveles Bay and Lighthouse

Sisiman Beach is a rocky Beach where you can find a lighthouse. in the southeast of Bataan Province. You can hike around and enjoy amazing sunsets.

25. Bataan Nuclear Power Plant

Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was built by former dictator Ferdinand Marcos as a solution to what was then an impending oil crisis.It was completed but never fueled. It’s located in Morong.

Where to Stay in Bataan

We have been a few times in Bataan. Last time we decided to stay at White Corals Beach Resort located in Morong Beach. It’s only one kilometer far from the town just in case you need to visit to buy something. A peaceful place where you can enjoy swimming in blue waters. Our favorite was the sunset. The staff is so friendly and the food was delicious. You can also spend your day in the resort for 500 PHP per adult and 400 PHP per kid.

Where to Eat in Bataan

Wooden leaf.

Wooden Leaf focuses in healthy food and lifestyle. You can find delicious juices, there are no sodas. The restaurant is beautiful with delicious and healthy food. We really love the juices, salads and pasta that we tried. It’s located in Balanga City Center next to the market.

Hu Tieu-An And Bahn Mi

A Vietnamese restaurant located in Balanga Bus Terminal. You can find noodle soup, the traditional Bahn Mi which is one of my favorite ones. Salads were great and prices were affordable. As always in the Philippines friendly and helpful staff in the restaurant.

Festivals in Bataan

Pawikan festival.

You can go every month of the year and you will find Festivals. We attended to Pawikan Festival and we really liked it. It’s celebrated in November. You will enjoy dance, music and even a beach party during the festival. The most important part is the realizing of the baby turtles.

There are other Festivals in Bataan like Pagbubunyi Festival celebrated in May with a night procession. Kuraldal Festival that includes a parade celebrated in June.

Well, the real name of that area is actually Racuh-A-Payaman AKA Marlboro Country.

The views and scenery in Marlboro Country are absolutely mind-blowing. I never thought that a place like this even existed in our country. After passing through the entrance, prepare to witness the massive view of Racuh-A-Payaman featuring its rugged hills, the ocean, Mt. Iraya, and the Tayid Lighthouse all in one place. You can even see some ponies wandering around eating grass off the hills.

The simplicity of the area is truly enchanting and romantic at the same time. That’s why Marlboro Country is also one of the most beautiful places in the Philippines to “pop the question” if you know what I mean.

There’s also another famous tourist attraction here at Racuh-A-Payaman known as the Fountain of Youth . As you reach the end of the hills, there’s a cliff leading to the amazing spring also known as the Rakuh-A-Idi. It’s a magnificent spring featuring turquoise crystalline waters overlooking the massive Pacific Ocean.

8. Sabtang Lighthouse

We all know that Batanes is home to several majestic structures called lighthouses. However, only three (3) of these beautiful lighthouses are functional up to this day. And one of those is no other than the Sabtang Lighthouse. Located near the edge of a cliff in San Vicente Port, this lighthouse is known to serve as a beacon and guide fishermen and seafarers to sail across the rough waters of the Pacific Ocean and the West Philippine Sea.

10. Valugan Boulder Beach

Batanes is usually associated with stones and rock formations, right? From the province’s structures such as houses, churches, and lighthouses, almost everything in Batanes is associated with rocks and stones. Well, another remarkable tourist destination in Batanes featuring huge rocks and stones is no other than the iconic Valugan Boulder Beach!

Indeed, the Valugan Boulder Beach is one of the most enchanting beach destinations because it features countless enormous boulders on its coast and forceful waves of the Pacific Ocean. Legend has it that these huge boulders came from a destructive volcanic eruption that happened thousands of years ago.

Although it’s not a typical beach destination where you can just chill out at the beach and let the gentle waves crash at your feet, the Valugan Boulder Beach is still an astonishing place to visit in Batanes.

11. Mount Iraya

Another breathtaking natural landmark you should visit in Batanes is no other than the province’s highest point, Mount Iraya. Standing at an elevation of 3,310 feet above sea level, this heavily forested active stratovolcano is undoubtedly considered one of Batanes’ treasured gems. The volcano has countless natural features that are worth witnessing that’s why it has become a haven for hikers and trekkers.

The volcano last erupted in 1454 and it hasn’t been showing any signs of activity since 1998. So it’s a considerably safe place to hike. More than its significant role in tourism, Mount Iraya is also important to the culture of Ivatans. It is said that Mount Iraya is a mother protecting her precious children, which are the Ivatans themselves.

13. Savidug Stone Houses

Ah, if the House of Dakay isn’t enough, then I suggest that you visit the famous Savidug Stone Houses! This small village features a group of stone houses that are perfectly preserved by the Ivatans. Each house is made with solid stone walls and cogon roofs which are said to be effective against even the most destructive typhoons.

The Chawa View Deck is another must-visit tourist destination in Batanes that you shouldn’t miss. Well, there’s no better place to do that than the famous Honesty Coffee Shop of Ivana, Batanes. From the name itself, I guess that you already figured out what’s so special about the Honest Coffee Shop, right?

In a province that’s proud to tell everyone that it has virtually zero crime rate, it’s just fitting that tourists contribute to the province’s well-respected core values. And one of those core values is obviously honesty. The Honesty Coffee Shop is unmanned and unguarded at any time of the day. So if you want to eat or drink something, you just take it and leave the payment in the box. That’s it!

Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Batanes’ unspoiled beauty is most evident in its beautiful beaches. From powdery white sand to scattered boulders rounded by time and waves, Batanes has a variety of seascapes you can swim in, visit, and lounge at, such as Morong Beach.

Located in Sabtang Island, Morong Beach is one of the more popular beaches in the province, thanks to the large rock formation called Nakabuang Arch.

This natural formation is said to be the most photographed spot in all of Batanes and has become the icon of Sabtang Island and Batanes as a whole.

Unlike other beaches in Batanes, the waves in Morong Beach are gentler, making it safer for tourists to take a dip. Its pristine white sand is comparable to that of Boracay.

This tourist spot is a significant landmark for Ivatans. According to the older Ivatans, whenever someone important in their tribe passes away, a ring of clouds appear above the mountains.

Mt. Iraya is one of the Philippines’ 22 active volcanoes, and its last eruption took place in 1454. It stands at 1,517 meters and is quite steep.

The trail is narrow and covered in trees and vines. It also gets increasingly muddy and slippery, which can pose a challenge to inexperienced hikers. But once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with great views of the island.

Start your Batanes lighthouse tour bright and early in Basco, located on the main island, Batan.

Built-in March 2003 to serve as a guide to local fishermen, the 66-ft tower Basco Lighthouse offers a 360-degree view of Basco town proper, Basco port, and the West Philippine Sea.

Basco Lighthouse is one of the three active lighthouses suggested by Florencio Abad, a former Batanes Congressman. Sabtang and Mahatao are the two other lighthouses, and all of them are considered tourist attractions in the province.

It was also the previous location of American telegraph facilities linking Batanes to the central government until it got demolished due to the bombing of the Japanese Imperial Army in the beginning of World War II.

Vayang Rolling Hills will give you an unobstructed view of the majestic Mt. Iraya, as well as the province’s significant islands Batan, Sabtang, and Itbayat, all at once.

A big part of the rolling hills used to be public land covered in cogon grass, which is used by the locals to make their cogon roofs. 

Today, most of the land in Vayang consists of farmland. From afar, you can see goats and cows grazing in the greenery. You can also catch a glimpse of the beautiful West Philippine Sea when you’re in the rolling hills.

Come and visit Valugan Boulder Beach. Countless round boulders and smaller stones fill the entire three-kilometer stretch of this Batanes beach on Batan Island.

It is said that the rocks on this beach were ejected from Mt. Iraya during an eruption several centuries ago and that the stones have been rounded due to the years of continually pounding waves from the Pacific Ocean. 

Because of the rough terrain, swimming at Valugan Boulder Beach is not allowed. Taking the stones home as souvenirs is not allowed either.

Batanes has dozens of churches scattered throughout its three inhabited islands. But one Batanes church that you shouldn’t miss when you do go for a visit is Mt. Carmel Chapel, also known to locals as Tukon Church.

Local artisans built this small chapel on top of a hill, and the province’s traditional stone houses inspired its design. 

The chapel is ideal for couples who want a romantic and small marriage ceremony. Inside the chapel are paintings of saints done by local artists.

Outside the chapel, you can see the crashing waves where the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea converge. You can take a short walk from the chapel to the PAGASA Radar Station, also known as Tukon Radar Station.

Florencio Abad’s family built the church. Abad is the former Budget Secretary during President Aquino’s term.

His family is one of the most prominent in Batanes, which is why they were able to build the church for them and has become one of the highlights of a Batanes experience .

The only lighthouse on Sabtang Island greets you after a 45-minute faluwa ride from Ivana Port in Batan Island.

Its features are like the Basco and Tayid lighthouses, but the Sabtang Lighthouse stone walls are left in its natural state. The beam also offers a breathtaking view of the rolling hills and the open ocean from the top of its observation tower.

In the early 2000s, the beacon, together with Basco and Tayid lighthouses, was part of a project headed by the late Representative Butch Abad.

All three were constructed primarily as guides to seafarers crossing the Pacific Ocean and West Philippine Sea, but later on, they were turned into tourist spots.

Just like the other two lighthouses, Sabtang Lighthouse is topped with a concrete lantern room painted red with each window having tapered storm panes.

During the construction of each tower, rubble masonry was used to make the structure sturdy enough to withstand the strong winds and the heavy rains that frequently occur in the province. This is included in one of the must-see tourist destinations in Sabtang Island .

Tayid Lighthouse is located in Mahatao, on the other side of Batan Island. Built around the same time as Basco Lighthouse, this structure faces the Pacific Ocean and is best seen from the Rakuh a Payaman.

Unlike its sister lighthouse in Basco, which has a round tower deck, the Tayid Lighthouse has a hexagonal tower deck.

Many tourists consider it an 18th-century-old edifice, but in actuality, it was built during the early 2000s. The establishment of Tayid Lighthouse, as well as the Basco and Sabtang lighthouses, was a proposal of the former Representative Butch Abad.

Built initially for guiding boats and ships traveling near Batan Island, the lighthouse now doubles as a tourist spot. The beam offers a view of the surrounding green landscapes, open ocean, and the nearby Mount Iraya.

The tower can be best viewed from the and Diura Fishing Village and the main viewing point of Marlboro Country. If you want a unique experience, you can join a tricycle tour in Batanes to see the province in a different light.

Near the House of Dakay is the Old Spanish Bridge, built during colonial times. It is still being used as a pedestrian bridge by the locals today.

In 1887, Luisa Estrella commissioned the construction of the House of Dakay, but turned it over to her favorite nephew, Jose Dakay Estrella, to whom the structure was named after.

On September 13, 1918, a devastating earthquake hit the island. However, along with four homes, the House of Dakay survived the disaster and still stands firm until today.

The house was eventually given to Floresida Estrella or “Lola Ida,” the only descendant. She looks after the edifice and entertains the tourists coming to visit.

She was one of the most photographed personalities in Batanes and has been featured in magazines, including Reader’s Digest, along with the house. You can visit this tourist spot along with other highlights in a fun  tricycle day tour in Batanes.

10. Explore Naidi Hills 

The first Batanes lighthouse has been constructed here in Naidi Hills. The site offers a breathtaking view of Baluarte Bay, Basco Town, Mount Iraya, and the sloping hills of Batan Island.

On a clear day, the entire Batanes, including the islets beyond Itbayat, can be seen from the hills. Naidi is derived from the Ivatan phrase “past settlement.”

According to history, it was once the most extensive wireless communication facility in the country, connecting Batanes to Manila during the American period, up to the demise of a grenade by the Japanese Imperial Air Force in the beginning of World War II.

It’s best to visit Naidi Hills during midday so you can witness the beauty of the sunset. Visiting the lighthouse would require 15-30 minutes walk, but it’s worth it as you’ll get treated to a quaint and picturesque view of Batanes.

There is no shortage of Batanes tourist spots in Batan Island, and you can get a taste of Batanes’ history and culture as you explore its beautiful small towns . Perhaps the most photographed tourist spot in Batanes is the Rakuh a Payaman, affectionately called Marlboro Hills in Mahatao. 

The hills are vast pastureland dotted with grazing cows, carabaos, and horses. It offers a perfect view of where land, sea, and sky meet in harmony.

With the green grass covering the hill, the landscape provides a spacious and open area for cows, water buffalos, and horses where they can freely graze and wander about. The government allows free use of the pastureland for locals who want to raise their cattle and carabaos in the area.

This tourist spot is accessible anytime! To get here, you can rent a tricycle or hire a van as it’s often included in a North and South Batan tour . Make sure to take snapshots so you can show to your friends and family back home!

The Chawa View Deck features rolling green hills, rock formations, and a panoramic view of the seascape. There is also a cave of the Virgin Mary and a few concrete chairs for the visitors located at the top of the view deck.

Another main feature of this attraction is the winding stairs leading to the rocky shore facing the sea. It consists of several flights and more than a hundred steps. At the bottom of the stairs is a “mini pool,” whose color differs from that of the ocean water and settles down inside a small area.

Featured in local films in the Philippines such as “You’re My Boss,” retirees Jose and Elena Gabilo own Honesty Coffee Shop. It was opened in 1995 to serve travelers going to and from Sabtang Island. Here, honesty is the best policy—as the store is unmanned.

The Honesty Coffee Shop opens as early as 6:00 A.M. and closes around 6:00 P.M. Don’t expect a café just because it’s called a coffee shop.

Instead, it is more of a sari-sari store where the items sold are bare necessities for travelers like instant coffee, soda, bottled water, biscuits and crackers, fried bananas, and sweet potatoes, souvenir t-shirts, and even bread and local pastry.

The prices of goods and souvenirs are written on the items. It’s a self-service store where you can take what you need, eat to your heart’s content, clean up, and leave your payment in a box.

According to the owner, retired schoolteacher Elena Gabilo, this honesty system has proven effective among residents and tourists. It just shows that honesty can be a good business and a great way to appreciate a day trip in Batanes .

On the Tukon hills, you can see the Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel, an interconnected network of tunnels carved out of the mountain. It served as a shelter for the Japanese forces during World War II. The tunnel is open for tourists to traverse, but remember to bring a flashlight or headlamp if you want to go exploring.

Between 1941 to 1945, the soldiers had the Ivatan troops dig the tunnel, building five exit points, bunkers, chambers, and a reservoir. The bunker was their headquarters during the battle with the Americans.

You will find nothing inside but stones, small holes, and walls of the broken tube. Many entry points have concrete above to shield the tunnel from the war bombs.

To ensure safety, tourists should not enter the tunnel without a tour guide and a flashlight or torch. Visit this tourist attraction in a unique manner by joining a tricycle tour in North Batan . 

Take a break from swimming, hiking, and getting windblown to see how the fishermen in Batanes live their daily lives at the Diura Fishing Village, which is also located in Mahatao.

Time your visit in March or April to witness the kapayvanuvanu, an age-old ritual done by the Diura fishermen to ensure a bountiful fishing season.

The ceremony begins with a shaman offering a pig while reading signs from the liver for good omen and catch. The entire cycle of fishing and harvesting for dorado continues until May.

You can get to Diura Fishing Village by tricycle with a travel time of ten minutes or by joining a day trip to Diura Fishing Village .

Outside the fishing festival, you can view the Madi Bay, Pacific Ocean, and Mount Iraya from afar. A nearby spring called Rakuh-a-idi Spring (Spring of Youth / Fountain of Youth) can also be reached with a 30-minute trek.

As a natural spring pool that overlooks the beach and the scenic Mount Iraya, it has become one of the places to visit in Batanes for relaxation and solace.

Sabtang Island also has its version of rolling hills: the Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint. Its slopes and rocky outcrops are equally as enthralling as Vayang and Rakuh, a Payaman in Batan Island. It is known for its curvy landscape carpeted with grass. 

The rolling hills that conquer the area come in a variety of low and high slopes giving different perspectives for its visitors. The highest hilltop among the slopes provides the best view of Chamantad Cove.

There is a small trail here that will lead you to the seascape that is covered with powdery sand and low to mid-sized rocks.

Before reaching the hilltop, there are plenty of huts along the highway that offer a sample of their locally-made sugarcane wine and Ivatan wild tea, called tubho.

Aside from sightseeing in Sabtang Island , you can also find locals, known as Ivatans, wandering the area to lend their traditional clothing – the Vakul and Kanayi, for picture taking purposes.

Vakul is their native headgear used for protection against the sun and rain, while Kanayi is a sleeveless jacket they usually wear when farming.

From the church, you can get to Savidug, a coastal village teeming with traditional cogon-roofed stone houses. Savidug Stone Houses are the primary type of dwelling in Batanes, particularly in a small barangay in Sabtang Island.

The Ivatans maintain these houses, the indigenous people inhabiting the island. This village, together with Chavayan, remains untouched where locals still live traditionally.

The structures of the houses in Savidug village are considered as a Sinadumparan type, one of the traditional houses in Batanes. It's one of the main highlights of a Sabtang Island experience ; getting acquainted with art.

Each one of the cogon roofs has a specific day of replacement. The villagers would work together to finish the roofing, which is called Kapayatep and the re-thatching, which is called Mayvuvung.

This roof replacement process is an excellent example of Bayanihan in the village, an Ivatan tradition to help each other to achieve a common goal.

19. Dive at Trevallies Lair and Canyons

Batanes may be known for its rolling hills and untouched landscapes, but it is also home to stunning natural attractions underwater. There are two popular dive sites in Batanes: Travallies Lair and Canyons. 

Just like its name suggests, Trevallies Lair is where you can find trevallies being cleaned by cleaner wrasses. Canyons, on the other hand, is home to steep slopes, coral formations, and and anemone fish. 

Other interesting underwater gems you can encounter when diving in Batanes are nudibranchs and fields of Pavona corals. You have the option to dive from the shore or a boat but take note that Batanes boat rides are known to be bumpy thanks to the strong waves in the province’s waters.

Just a few meters from Honesty Coffee Shop and facing Ivana Port is the San Jose de Ivana Church. The church’s foundations date back to 1775, and the original church ruins, which used to house the altarpiece, the sacristy, and the baptistery, still stand at the back of the church.

Like its counterpart in Sabtang, the San Jose de Ivana Church was also declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Historical Commission. The church was meant to serve the Ivanans, Sabtangs, and Uyugans.

Sabtang’s settlers were forcibly resettled in Ivana but were later allowed to return to their island, decreasing congregation numbers.

Today remains of the abandoned church can still be seen. It also has a crenelated structure with rare wooden beams. The monastery, part of the church building, has an original circular masonry along the stairway.

Be humbled by the power of Mother Nature as you walk through the Songsong Ruins. A tidal wave ravaged this tiny village in the 1950s; the houses were damaged beyond repair and leaving its residents with no choice but to abandon their town.

At present, a portion of the rows of houses in the village had already been surrounded by high bushes and greeneries. Flowers dot the sides of the house, almost covering its entirety. It’s one of the highly-recommended tourist spots to visit in Batanes.

A handful of the ruins had been restored and occupied by the descendants of the original owners, who now maintain the beauty of the site. Other locals are also returning to some of the habitable ruins on the site.

Although some areas of the barangay had been closed to the public because of possible accidents, most of the sitio is still accessible to tourists.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR. 

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated. 

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín​ or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable. 

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
