Trek to Triund Top – A Complete Guide

The trek to Triund Top, near Mcleodganj and Dhamarkot in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is a popular one. The reason? It is short and easy – great for first-time hikers. The reward for reaching the top is the gorgeous view of the snow-covered Dhauladhar range and green grass as far as the eyes can see. It is a sight to behold!

We were two girls who trekked to Triund all by ourselves and loved every bit of it. If you’re in the Dharamshala/Mcleodganj area then you definitely should hike to Triund top. The below-mentioned pointers are all you need to know for a successful Triund hike.

Note: Please do not litter when you travel. Carry your waste with you in bag and if possible pick up any litter your find.

1. At what height is Triund?

Triund top is at the height of 2,850 m (9,350 ft). The elevation gain during the trek is about 914 metres (3,000 feet).

2. What is the best month to hike to Triund?

The trek to Triund top can be done all year round except for the rainy months of July and August, and the peak winter months of January and February. In December, you can expect the first snowfall on the trek. The spring and summer months of March to June have the best weather conditions to trek. Though post-monsoon months have the clearest views of the mountains during the trek.

We went in late April and during this time there is a lot of haze due to forest fires. Hence, the view of the valley and mountains during the trek wasn’t very clear.

3. How long is the Triund trek?

There are two main Triund trek routes: One from Dharamkot (via Gallu Devi Temple) and one from McLeodganj (via Bhagsu)

1. Dharamkot (via Gallu Devi Temple): 7 km and 4.5 hours at an average pace one way

The route up from Dharamkot goes via Gallu Devi Temple. This is the preferred route because it is not only the easier of the two but also a very beautiful one through Rhododendron and Oak forests. Remember to go up from Zostel via the staircase. After reaching Gallu Devi temple, you’ll have to take the path going right. It’s not difficult to find and there is a shop and checkpoint there so you’ll be sure of where you’re going.

If you want to shorten your hike to about 5.45 km and 4 hours approx., then take a cab to Gallu Temple Checkpoint. We took a cab from near Zostel in Dharamkot to Gallu Temple and it cost a whopping Rs. 500 after bargaining! The road to the temple is quite bad and hence the cab guys charge quite a bit.

Gallu Devi Temple at the start of the trek to Triund

2. Mcleodganj (via Bhagsu Falls) : 9 km and 6 hours at avg pace one way

There is another trek route to Triund that goes via Bhagsu Fall and Shiva Cafe. It is considered to be more challenging because certain sections are steep and slippery and hence the trek takes more time to complete. It is, therefore, not recommended for beginner hikers. Per my observation, most tour groups take this path. They start at Mcleodganj Chowk, go through the falls and then to Triund. So if you’re a beginner and planning to book a tour, read/enquire about the route details carefully before making your booking. In this blog post, we will only discuss the Dharamkot/Gallu Devi Temple Route.

4. Do I need a book a tour or hire a guide to trek to Triund?

You don’t really need a guide or tour. If you’re walking alone, you might prefer to hire someone for company’s sake but it’s unnecessary especially if you take the Gallu Devi Temple route.

As I mentioned before, we were two girls who did Triund trek without a guide. At no point did we feel that we should have come with a guide. You will keep bumping into people from time to time since it is a popular hike. It’s perfectly safe and easy!

5. Can the Triund trek be done in one day?

Yes, it absolutely can. A day hike is best if you’re short on time and can spare only one day. Remember that you’ll need to be physically fit to hike up and then back the same day. It would be about 12-18 km depending on your route and take you 5-7 hours minimum not counting the time you’ll spend at the top.

6. Should I spend the night at Triund?

If you hike a lot then staying the night may not be interesting for you since you’ll complete your journey up quite fast and have plenty of time to spend there before you come back down.

For beginners or those who don’t hike often, I would highly recommend doing a Triund night stay for these reasons:

  • If you’re hiking all the way up, you should be able to have ample time to walk around Triund Top and soak in the view
  • Hiking up and down on the same day can be tiring. We very much enjoyed our leisurely walk up to Triund and were grateful for the rest we got at night before having to go back.
  • The view in the evening during sunset is spectacular. The way the sun turns the mountains golden is a sight you should not miss.
  • Triund is best explored in the evening as it isn’t blazing hot
  • If the sky is clear, you’ll see a beautiful starry sky during your Triund night stay

7. How can I spend the night at Triund?

To spend the night at Triund, you can either pitch your own tent or stay at an established camp.

If you’re going to pitch your own tent

If you’re planning to pitch your own tent, note that it is technically not allowed but people still do it. Make sure you walk further toward the Triund head (which goes to the Bhagsu route) and pitch a tent there hidden by the many rocks. Also, only pitch a tent around sunset just before it gets dark so no one bothers you saying it isn’t allowed.

If you’re going to be staying at an established camp

If you’re going on a weekend, you definitely need to have a camp/stay pre-booked. There might be a lot of rush so you may not get a camp. In case you’re unable to prebook a camp, I’d suggest hiking up as early as possible so you can find an empty camp or hike back down if you can’t.

If you’re going on a weekday, it’s your wish if you want to prebook or not. Note that if you’re not pre-booking then it is best to reach there as early as possible and ask for options.

Tent for our Triund night stay

We prebooked our camp through Dhauladhar’s Doors just a night prior to going. Dhauladhar’s Doors is located at Triund top and has 2 tents, a cottage with rooms, a kitchen and a dining area. It also had a separate tent that is a toilet – a dug-out pit to do your thing with a shovel provided to cover it up with mud. You can book either the tents or a room by calling Mr Raj at +91-9736641934. They provide simple and tasty dinner (Dal, Chawal, Sabzi, salad, papad) and breakfast (bread omelette or Maggi and tea). In the tent, you’re given a cotton mattress and a sleeping bag. This cost us Rs. 1,200.

Dhauladhar's Doors Campsite at triund Top - Great for camping at Triund

8. How much does it cost to do the Triund Trek?

Day hike without a guide: If you hike in one day without a guide, then it’ll cost you nothing except any food and water you buy along the way or sticks you rent out.

Overnight stay with self-booked camp: If you’re staying the night, the camp will cost you about Rs. 700-1500 per person. Lower side on reaching there and booking and higher side on pre-booking.

Tours to Triund: These would cost in the range of 800-1800 depending on the duration of the tour, camping site and provisions. Here’s one option: Triund trek with camping

How much the two of us spent:

Cab to Gallu Devi temple: Rs. 500

Camp: Rs. 2,400 (inclusions: tent, dinner, breakfast)

Stick: Rs. 100 (Rented stick for Rs.100 each, returned it and got Rs. 50 each back)

Food and beverages at magic view cafe: Rs. 300 (Maggi, bread omelette, coffee, tea, water refill)

Beverages at Triund top: Rs. 50 (coffee and tea)

Gatorade and water at triund top: Rs. 150

Food and beverages at magic view cafe: Rs. 400 (Maggi, bread omelette, coffee, tea, water refill, Gatorade)

Cab from Gallu Devi Temple to Dharamkot: Rs. 500

Total for 2 people: 4,400

Cost for 1 person: 2,200

9. At what time should I start the Triund trek?

Now that you’ve decided if you doing a day hike or staying the night let’s get into the time to leave. Remember that we will only discuss the hike through the Gallu Devi Route in this article so here goes.

For Day Hikers

If you’re a day hiker, then you have to start the hike before 11 AM. After that, you won’t be allowed up without a camp booking. It’s safer to cross the checkpoint at Gallu Devi Temple before 10 AM.

I’d suggest starting as early as possible. Most people start between 7-9 AM. The reason for this is that if you’re slow, you’ll have plenty of time to spend at Triund and some more to return before dark. If you’re fast, you’ll have more time to spend at Triund or you can even go up to Snowline Cafe.

For Campers

Take note that you are not allowed to cross the Triund checkpoint after 2 PM.

If you’re setting up your own camp or haven’t pre-booked a camp, then leave before 11 AM. If you have already prebooked a camp, you can leave between 11 AM and 2 PM as well.

Here’s my suggestion:

Leave before 11 AM regardless. If you’re a slow hiker, you’ll get plenty of time at Triund before sunset and if you’re fast you’ll get even more.

We left at 12:30 PM, took tons of breaks for various reasons and reached by 5:30 PM. The issue with this was that after arriving so late, we had only one hour to enjoy the sunset and find our camp. We couldn’t explore Triund Top properly this evening but consoled ourselves thinking that it’ll be okay to explore it the next day. But the next morning we noticed, to our dismay, that it was not only very sunny and hot but also that the mountains aren’t really visible. I would have rather reached much earlier the previous evening and left Triund early the next morning.

The view from Triund Top in the morning

10. What happens at the Gallu Devi Temple Forest Checkpoint?

On reaching the Gallu Devi Checkpoint, you will be stopped by a police officer who will check your Government ID card and make a note of your name and ID number in a register. They will also take a photocopy of your ID card. If you reach the checkpoint after 11 AM then he’ll also check your camp booking confirmation.

Further, the officer will check your bag for alcohol and speakers. These are not allowed on the trek.

Don’t forget to rent a stick if you don’t have your own trekking pole. It is available at the checkpoint shop. It costs only Rs. 100 to rent and you get Rs. 50 back on returning it. This stick will help you immensely on your way up to Triund by taking your body weight off your legs and dividing it between your upper body and lower body. Your knees will thank you for lowering the stress on them and your back for better posture. As a result, your balance and speed will increase.

11. What is the Triund trek route like?

Here’s a video of my experience . It’s the very first long-form video I have ever edited, so please be kind.

The first half from Gallu Devi Temple is a gradual ascent through Rhodendron and Oak forests. A lot of the trek will be shaded by these trees which will lower the intensity of the sun on you. You’ll not get very tired.

Start of the trail to Triund via Gallu Devi Temple

The floor will be a mass of leaves and will gradually start having more rocks. From time to time you’ll find clearings that’ll give you a view of the Dharamshala area or rather the Kangra Valley. It’s quite a view on a clear day.

Valley view from Magic View Cafe on the Triund trek route

You’ll reach the mid-point of the hike with just a few breaks here and there to catch your breath. The midpoint is marked by two cafes – Magic View Cafe and Best View Cafe. Magic View is the oldest Chai shop built in 1984 and the better one too. (Trust me, we tried both and the person at the other cafe didn’t care about his business at all)

The well-stocked Magic View Cafe midway on the Triund Trek

Second Half

The second half begins to get steeper and steeper. But it’s perfectly fine – nothing scary just more tiring. The ground will have more rock than leaves and the trees will clear out more and more.

The trail will also start to get more beautiful.

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

The final 20-30 mins will be a bit gruelling. You’ll feel like giving up but you’ll see the route get greener telling you that you’re just about to reach. Carry on and you’ll be rewarded in just a bit.

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

The moment you near the very last few steps to Triund Top, you’ll get a glimpse of the mighty Dhauladhar Mountain Range and trust me, all your tiredness will melt away and be replaced by sheer awe and gratitude.

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

A few more steps and you’ll see green grass and rocks all over. You can grab a tea or coffee and bite at the very visible tea stall! Just spend the evening walking around, breathing clear fresh air and being mesmerized by the view.

Be sure to get settled in your camp before dark.

To find your specific camp or a random camp to stay in (if you’ve not pre-booked your stay) simply ask the person at the shop. When we got there our camp person located us himself so it was quite convenient.

12. What to Pack for the Triund Trek?

Basics (will be needed by day hikers and by campers).

  • Hiking Shoes: Wearing hiking shoes will ensure you get a better grip, lessen the chance of a sprain and increase your speed on the trail. If you’re buying a new one, please break into them before attempting this hike or any other. Shop for hiking boots on Amazon
  • Hiking Socks: Hiking socks keep your feet dry and less sweaty. But mainly, it keeps your feet cushioned which stops painful blisters from forming as your hiking shoe rubs against the foot while you walk
  • Comfortable Backpack: Backpacks that have straps with good padding are ideal! If you wear a thin-strapped or fashion backpack, you will feel the weight of the bag a lot through the hike and it’ll weigh you down. Day hikers can carry a small backpack (10-20 L) and not worry about this too much but campers will need to be a lot more thoughtful about this as they’ll be carrying more weight. A 30-40 L backpack will be sufficient.
  • Rain Cover for Backpack: This will keep your bag and the stuff inside dry in the rain! Buy a Raincover on Amazon
  • Water Bottle: We carry foldable bottles like this one because it literally has no weight but you could surely carry any other as well. Do carry one or two 1L bottles and refill them at the stores on the way. In all probability, you may end up having to buy a bottle of water anyway. Note that a bottle of packaged water is priced at Rs. 50 though the MRP is Rs. 20. Buy a foldable bottle on Amazon
  • Sunscreen: As you get closer to the sun, the chance of damage by UV rays increases so applying SPF is essential. An SPF 30-50 sunscreen will do. Reapply after 4 hours. Linking two sunscreens I usually use! Buy face sunscreen on Amazon | Buy body sunscreen on Amazon
  • Sunglasses: These are necessary to protect your eyes.
  • Cap: Again this will protect your face and hair from the sun. I personally don’t usually wear a cap though!
  • A snack or two: If you’re going on a day hike, carry some snacks for the trek to Triund. If you run out, you can always restock from the shops on the trail but note that everything will be double the price. We carried Glucose Tablets and Gatorade which really helped keep our energy levels up.
  • Stick/Hiking Pole: You can either bring your own hiking pole if you have one or rent a stick from the store at the checkpoint. It costs Rs. 100 to rent a stick and on returning it you get Rs. 50 back.
  • Cash: Google Pay etc. don’t work very well on the route as connectivity is dodgy. Best to carry at least Rs. 2,000. Even if you go up there and decide to stay the night, you’ll have cash on you to pay up!
  • Govt. ID Card: You may need this at the checkpoint depending on the time your start your hike.

Also, depending on the month you’re travelling in, day hikers can also carry a woollen layer like a jacket or sweatshirt. I would always carry a wind cum rain jacket in any season but that’s up to you!

For campers only (in addition to the above)

It gets really chilly at night you will need to carry woollen layers in addition to some other items. While you’re hiking you won’t feel cold at all, so all your woollens will be in your bag. These woollens will add a bit of weight to your bag so stressing on this again – carry a good, sturdy, well-padded backpack. It is best to shop for items given below at Marks and Spencer (thermals), Uniqlo (down jacket and thermals), Columbia, Decathlon, and Wildcraft. All these brands are present in India!

  • Thermal: This is just needed if you’re hiking in the chillier months! We did not carry this in April and didn’t think we needed it either.
  • Sweater or Fleece: This will be the first layer after your t-shirt.
  • Padded or Down Jacket: Padded jackets are ideal for treks as they insulate even after they get wet. But if you don’t have one, carry a down jacket instead. Make sure you carry a lightweight packable jacket.
  • Windbreaker cum Raincoat or Poncho: This is extremely important. The wind at night bites and it can rain at any time. If you don’t wish to get sick it is best to buy one if you don’t already own one.
  • Gloves: Yes, it is that cold and you will probably need gloves. We sure did!
  • Wollen Cap/Beanie: Protecting your head from the cold is ultra important, even while you sleep.
  • Warm Socks: It is good practice to change your socks before you sleep on a trek. Wet socks can make you ill. Warm socks (plus a beanie) are essential to staying toasty all night.
  • Change of clothes (optional): Carry an extra change of clothes. You should change your T-shirt once you reach the campsite so you don’t fall ill wearing a wet one. A spare set of pants helps in case the one you’re wearing gets wet. That said, we still didn’t carry a set of pants to reduce weight.
  • Head Lamp: While you can get by with your phone torchlight, it is best to carry a headlamp for convenience. You can then be hands-free in the night while exploring, looking for peeing spots, or even inside your tent. I just hung mine from the centre hook of the tent and had our own bulb of sorts!

13. Are there places I can trek to beyond Triund?

Yes, you can trek further than Triund as well. If you’re planning to camp at Triund, then you can definitely hike up to Snowline Cafe the next morning (2 km further) and then hike down to Gallu Devi Temple. However, there are longer treks that go beyond Triund as well. These are as follows:

McLeodganj- Triund- Laka Glacier- McLeodganj: 10,600 ft; 11- 13 km one way; 2-3 days, moderate-difficult

McLeodganj – Triund – Laka Glacier- Indrahar Pass-McLeodganj: 14,245 ft; 4 days; 22 km one way; difficult

That’s all folks! I would love to answer any questions you may have about the trek to Triund. Do drop them below in the comments section and I’ll answer them asap. Have a fantastic trek!

Do I need downjacket and snow gloves for a Trek in the last week of march

Yes, for the down jacket, it is still quite cold. I’m not sure about snow gloves in particular but taking some warm gloves is always better.

The trek involves gradual to steep ascents that even amateurs can cover. And since the Mcleodganj to Triund distance is not much, it is not very exhausting either. The first 5 km of the Triund trek are simple and not very undulating. Thereon, the Triund trek route gets steep and requires a sturdy walk. This stretch is popularly known as 22 curves because of the 22 sharp curves en route.

However, if you are trekking during winters, the trek becomes slightly difficult due to the presence of snow on the otherwise firm and well-defined path.

A Retrospective Account Of Inju's Adventures On Land and In Life

Triund Trek: A Face-Off With The Dhauladhar Range

' src=

The trek up to Triund hill was the tail end event of the entire Himachal backpacking trip. An Unknown path, steep and rocky trail, blind trust in google maps, with nothing but an intuitive sense of direction, an impending deadline, and unexplainable love for mountains. It was a perfect recipe for an adventure. And when it comes to adventures, I am game for it, come what may. Looking back at that trek, it reminds of these beautiful yet lasting words by James Baldwin.

And once you realize that you can do something, it would be difficult to live with yourself if you didn’t do it. James Baldwin, The Paris Review.

There is something with climbing mountains that I simply can’t give up on (read the description of the Instagram post below to know what). climbing mountains gave so much satisfaction that it’s very difficult to live with myself if I didn’t. Especially when you can see the peak challenging you from the window of your hostel, I simply can’t tuck myself under the blanket.

View this post on Instagram Why do you have to trek sir, That busy mind of mine keeps asking me. Why do you have to take the pain And climb huge mountains Why do you have to take the pain To cross slippery rocks Why do you have to take the pain To walk alongside dangerous ridges With a sigh, I reply!! Those huge mountains, Represent the huge challenges I have set for myself Those slippery rocks Represent the pitfalls in my plans The dangerous ridges represent The risks you gotta take to complete the challenges. But above all, Trekking teaches you one thing Really Really well. That is to always, always take One step at a time. No more no less. Just One Step. And soon you'll find yourself On top of the summit. P.S. So, it was the last circuit of the Himachal Backpacking trip with my friends. After a whirlwind trip from Delhi to Kasol and flying high in Bir Billing, we landed in Mcleodganj after what seemed like a grueling journey. The last few days have been intense, hectic and what not. But the moment I put my foot down at Mcleodganj the snow-capped mountains of Dhauladhar range allured me. My whole purpose of adding Mcleodganj to the itinerary was to get a little closer to those massifs. So, I asked my friends if they were up for the trek. All but Hithesh and Santhosh said no. Understandably so.

The choice for me, however, was obvious. I looked at the massifs and gave a thumbs up, “Challenge Accepted and you shall be scaled”. The others planned to explore the Dharamshala the following day. Read on to know all about my experience of the Triund Trek.

We knew we were up for a challenge. The trek was 8 KM one way. We were planning to go via the Bhagsunag waterfall. This trail was the only option left other than the one from Gallu Devi which was 10 KM one way. The problem, however, was that the trail through Bhagsunag Waterfalls wasn’t very clear on maps or the ground. On top of that, we had a bus to catch in the evening, to reach Delhi. So, we had to start early, be alert mentally about where we were going and push ourselves to not give up until we boarded the bus 😉

So, we set the alarm, woke up, and started the hike at around 6 AM.

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

We reached the Mcleodganj taxi stand and took the street towards the Bhagsunag temple. After crossing the temple there was a concrete path made all the way to shiva cafe. You can see the Bhagsu Nag waterfall from here. A beautiful stream of water running down between the hills.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls Mcleodganj

The concrete path had too many stairs in between that slowed us down a little. But within no time we reached the famous Shiva Cafe. Because it was too early in the morning, Shiva cafe was closed but it had all the vibes of a peaceful place.

Shiva Cafe McleodGanj

We crossed over the Bhagsunag Waterfalls to reach the other mountain. The trail started to narrow down from here. It didn’t look difficult but had too many diversions and turns. Maps ceased to work and we were left with our own judgment on which trail to take.

Into The Unknown Trails To Triund

One of the thumb rule you can use is to see if the trail has any footmarks, indicating recent usage. And another is to look at the peak and see if you’re not deviating far from the peak. We crossed that trail and reached a point with some magnificent views of the sleeping Mcleodganj.

Sunrise Over McleodGanj

The sun just started uncovering the lush greenery from the low-lit early mornings. We continued walking and this particular stretch was a little steep but there was a hut at the end of it. So with pumped-up energy, we reached the hut.

Breakfast Time

We ordered some Maggi and chai to recoup some energy. There was an elderly man running the store. We also asked him if we were on the right path to reach the peak. He nodded with a smile. Such a lovely smile 😀 We paid for the meals and started the hike again.

Breakfast On Triund Trail

The trail just disappeared from here on. We knew we had to reach the ridge in front of us. All we could see were thorny and dense plants in front of us. A muddy path appeared on close inspection. We just assumed it would be the trail and started walking with the sight undeviated from the peak.

The Trail Of Thorns and Hops

Soon it leads to another trail and we hopped onto that and then another one appeared and just like that, we navigated past the thorny patch. It was indeed a real-life example of “Set your eyes on the destination and you’ll always figure a way to reach there.” Because sometimes that’s life.

You have a sense of where you wanna go and you reach there by trial and error.

Climb Or Walk?

We were now at the start of the ridge. On one side it was the grandiosity of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Look at those brick-sized brick walls in front of the mighty mountains. It felt as if, if not for their mercy, those brick walls would’ve crumbled a long time ago. And on the other side, we had a steep climb ahead of us.

Birds Eye View Of McleodGanj From Triund Trek

While the ridge was really steep, almost as if it touched the sky but there was another route available by the side. We started hiking on the other route. And boy we were so glad we took this route. Just after a 100m- 200m walk on this route, we found another cafe. It wasn’t open yet but there were a few granite slabs turned into Sofas for customers to sit. I sat on one of the granite sofas. This cafe was almost on the edge of the mountain. So my eyesight slowly went down the valley before taking a steep climb up to a towering snow-capped mountain. What a tiny speck of dust I was in front of the majestic mountain.

Cafe With The View On Triund Trail

As much as we wanted to stay, the thought of getting a better view from the top made us restart the hike again. The hiking route took us up the ridge again and this time we continued on the ridge without any deviations.

The sun was right on our backs. The sweater I got slowly turned from a shield to baggage. The ridge walk became rough after a while. With steep climbs on a rocky path, it just threw one blow after another.

The Magic Unfurls

By then the snow-capped mountains started wrapping clouds around them. As if they’re doing a magic show to entertain us and make us forget and endure the pain of the steep climb. The occasional sight of a Himalayan Griffon made it all worthwhile.

Meadows And Massifs Of Triund

The first steep climb was behind us and the mountain rewarded us with another. We conquered that as well thinking the peak or Triund campsite was just at the top. But I think the ridge fell in love with our determination, So it presented yet another steep climb, we trekked up that too and then another and another and another. And we yelled at the ridge, “Up Up here we go” .

Trails of Triund

We kept taking small breaks and continued the climb. Occasionally looking back at the downward slope all the way to Mcleodganj. From that point, Mcleodganj was as tiny as an ant. The climb didn’t end there and the steep slopes kept challenging us. Added to that, the sun was merciless too. So we took the meadows to ease the stress on the legs for a while.

Meadows Of Triund Trek

After a brief walk on the meadows, the trail flattened out. The meadows were dotted with huge rocks.

Rocky Trails Of Triund

Face-Off With Dhauladhar Range

To our utter surprise, We reached the Triund Campsite at around 10:15 AM. And there it was, the magnificent Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. With nothing but courage and a paraglide away from where we stood. I just stood there, taking in everything I can.

Reaching Triund Hilltop

The slippery glacial slopes, the towering sharpness of the peak, the clouds caressing its crown. I sometimes wonder, how on earth do such meadows even exist. I mean, look around, all you see are nothing but towering and unreachable peaks. Yet, almost magically, you have this Triund hill. A hill with all its meadows makes the perfect ground for you to witness the mighty mountains. I sometimes feel its all part of a clever architect’s design.

The Magnificent Dhauladhar Range

I was in love with that place. Just resting there, looking at those mountains made me unreasonably happy. With enough time at hand, we decided to take it slow.

Tranquility Of Triund

Looking at the cloud patterns it appeared to rain, so at around 12 PM we started the climb down the same way. Considering the trail was completely downhill, it was quick and not as tiring as it was. One last click before the rain kicked in xD

Posers Of Triund

On the way back we saw a few people. They may have climbed up via the trail starting at Gallu Devi Temple, stayed at the Triund campsite overnight (which I believe is now banned), and were climbing down. We climbed down the hill, hiked through the thorny trail, and after the last stretch of those winding narrow trails which were now familiar, we saw the Shiva Cafe. I was proved wrong when I said it had the vibes of a peaceful place. Against all my thoughts, it was surprisingly crowded. So crowded that we had to wait for a while to get a seat to sit and eat.

Shiva Cafe On the Way Back

We reached the La Vaca Hostel at around 3:30 PM. Met the other guys, packed our bags, and left to Dharamshala for the bus back to Delhi. For the first time during that trip, I stood there in silence witnessing the myriad shades of sunset sky. And just like that, we bid goodbye to the sun, Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas.

The Goodbye Sunset At Dharamshala

As part of my effort to help more and more travelers witness the beauty of this world, I’m adding few FAQs to help you plan a hike up to the Triund Peak.

Why Should You Choose Triund Trek?

How long is the triund trek.

There are two routes you can choose for the trek. The trek to Triund via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is the shortest but also the toughest. The trail via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is 8KM one way . The other route to Triund via Gallu Devi temple is 10 KM one way but it’s not as tough as the first one.

How to do Triund trek?

If it was earlier, I would’ve advised you to set aside 2 days for the Triund Trek. The sunset and sunrise are supposedly breathtaking. But camping is now banned. So you can plan to do this in one day. I would suggest you start very early

How To Reach Triund Trek?

The basecamp for the Triund Trek is Mcleodganj. McLedoganj is 8 KM from Dharamshala and is frequented by local buses every 20 Mins. Dharamshala, in turn, is connected with all major cities in India via road. There are overnight Volvo buses running to and from Dharamshala to all major cities like Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, and Delhi. So you can reach Dharamshala by bus from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc.

You can even choose to fly down to Dharamshala. Book a ticket to Kangra Airport from wherever you’re in the world.

While at Mcleodganj, ask for Dharamkot which is another small area near McLeodganj. After reaching Dharamkot, ask for Bhagunaag Temple or look it up on maps. Once at the Bhagsunaag temple, take the concrete path towards Bhagsunag Waterfall. The waterfall is visible clearly once you cross the temple. Follow the trail to reach the Triund Peak via Bhagsunaag waterfalls. If you want to take the less intense Gallu Devi trail, then the Gallu Devi temple is about 1.6 KM from Bhagsunag Temple.

How difficult is Triund Trek?

Although the difficulty is subjective, I can assure you that if you have basic fitness, (If you can clock 5KM sprint in 40-45 Mins) then you will be able to comfortably finish the trek in one day. Even if you take the trial via Bhagsu Nag waterfalls. So, I would classify it as an easy to moderate trek. Triund trek is regarded as one of the best treks for beginners.

How To Plan For Triund Trek?

If you are coming from Delhi or nearby cities, take an overnight bus on one of your leisure weekends. Reach Dharamkot and start the trek using the directions mentioned above. Complete the trek. Stay in one of the hostels (I stayed in La Vaca Hostel , inexpensive for students too and very cozy). Explore Dharamshala the next day and head back to your city via another overnight bus.

In Case you’re planning for Triund Trek from Hyderabad or Bengaluru or Mumbai, then I recommend you to club a few other places in Himachal Pradesh. I personally took a week off and explored Kasol(Check out my blog post here ), hiked up the meadows of Kheerganga(Check out the DIY guide here ), Manali, did Paragliding Bir Billing, and landed at Mcleodganj for the trek. It was very hectic for me so you may delete or swap a few places. My strong recommendation is don’t come all the way just for Triund Trek.

Essentials For Triund Trek?

If you’re doing a one-day trek to Triund, then below are few items I definitely recommend:

  • Sweatshirt (If you’re starting very early)
  • Good Hiking Shoes
  • Comfortable pair of clothes.
  • Another pair if you wish to get into Bhagsunaag waterfalls on your way back.
  • 2-3 Liters of Water. It gets really hot at the top during the summer months.
  • Shades/sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Protein bars or Nutri Bikies to energize yourself. Don’t pack the entire supermarket citing the hiking reason. And PLEASE DON’T LITTER.

P.S: For Ladies, please pack essentials as deemed necessary by you beyond the above-mentioned items. Safe trekking.

P.P.S: I’ve mentioned the above essentials keeping summer months in mind. Please plan according the season in which you’re planning to go.

Is Triund Trek Safe?

Whenever you are in the mountains, you are always at the mercy of nature. Please respect the nature and conditions and you will be good. The trail from Bhagsunag waterfalls to Triund is a continuous climb. I am sure of its slippery nature in monsoons. The trail from the Gallu Devi temple is a ridge walk. So, it is quite dangerous in the event of a landslide. Otherwise, the trail is very good for hiking. Just respect the nature and overcast conditions and you will be safe in the lap of nature.

Can Triund trek be done alone?

It is given that Triund Trek is very ideal for beginners and also the trail is clear from the Gallu Devi temple. So, even solo trekkers and travelers can hike up to the Triund campsite without any doubts in mind. Take sufficient snacks and water and precautions about your personal safety while you’re on and off the trail. It’s highly likely that you will find enough people to befriend if you take the Gallu Devi temple. So rest assured and you can do this trek completely on your own without a guide.

Where To Stay In Your Trip To Triund Trek?

Dharamkot is the basecamp for a lot of treks in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. By the virtue of that, there are a number of backpackers hostels in McleodGanj and Dharamkot. You can find branded backpacker hostels like Hosteller, La Vaca Hostel, etc. We stayed in La Vaca hostel and it was really comfortable and affordable. You can check for bookings on booking.com or Airbnb.

Other Treks Near Triund!

So, if you have more time at hand you can go for other trekking destinations around Triund. Treks like Indrahar Pass Trek, Laka Glacier Trekking are all one day trek away from Triund hill. Refer to this article for more details.

Cost of Triund Trek!

Barring the personal expenses, the cost for Triund Trek is INR 0 rupees. You read that right, unsure why, but there is no entry fee for Triund trek. So if you’re doing it on your own it’s completely free of cost.

What’s The Height Of Triund Hill?

The Triund Hill is at a height aka Altitude of 2850m above sea level. It is situated at the foot of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas.

Triund Trek Map/Route

Refer to the below-handmarked trek route for reaching Triund Hill from Mcleodganj. I’ve marked the trails for both the trails of Bhagusnag Waterfalls as well as the Gallu Devi Temple trail.

Triund Route Map From McleodGanj

Should You Choose Kheerganga Trek or Triund Trek?

Honestly, there is no right answer. For me, Kheerganga was more exciting simply because it had much more variety. Kheerganga has meadows, forests, steep climbs, waterfalls, and above all hot water springs. You can read about my experience here . But on the other hand, Triund Trek brought me much closer to the snow-capped mountains which were just distant backgrounds in pictures during Kheerganga Trek. However, Kheerganga is a moderate difficulty trek and you need two days to complete the trek. So if you have two days to spare, give Kheerganga a shot. If you’re looking for a quick weekend trek, then go for Triund.

Hope the FAQs help you plan your trip better. Have a good time in the Himalayas and while you’re there, take care of the mountains.

Triund Trek: A Two-day Hike to Triund and the Snowline

Completing the Triund and Snowline trek has been a major highlight of my time in India so far- No question.

Following the 5-month lockdown in Rishikesh, North India , I jumped at the opportunity to head to the stunning Himalayan ranges of Himachal Pradesh when lockdown restrictions started easing! And, with the virus closing most attractions in India, trekking is one of the few things we could still do!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Disclaimer: I have always been fascinated by trekking and dreamed of taking those perfect silhouette pictures from mountain tops. Yet, the thought of actually completing these agonising uphill hikes seemed a world away from London, with bad hips and most of my time spent working from home (bed!)

The Triund and Snowline trek served as my biggest trekking challenge so far! The reward at the end is TOO spectacular to miss, read on to find out more …

  • Route Options & My Recommendation for the BEST way to see Triund
  • Top Tips you don’t want to miss
  • Day 1: Trek to Triund and stay overnight
  • Day 2: Trek to Snowline and return via Bhagsu Waterfall

The Triund Top

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Commonly known as the crown jewel of Dharamshala, Triund is a divine trekking destination offering panoramic views of the Dhauladhar mountain ranges and the Kangra Valley in the Himalayas. Sitting at 2827 meters, or (9275 feet), Triund is a firm favourite providing a moderately challenging trek and an abundance of natural beauty.

The trek is considered a moderate to easy trek by numerous online blogs (which doesn’t mean its easy). But, when I remembered my dead legs on a 2400m trek in Salento, Colombia – ‘easy’ sounded good!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

In reality, unless you are a seasoned trekker – it’s not ‘that’ easy . I read some crazy reviews saying the trek took 2-3hours, if you have the stamina of a horse, yes. But otherwise, be prepared for it to take a lot longer! We reached Triund after 3.5/4 hours from Bhagsu Nag (about 7km from Mcleod Ganj) via the route recommended below.

Routes for the Triund Trek

So there are a few ways you can do this, this blog will focus on the 2nd option. This is the route we took, and I think is the best challenge mixed with ease and serene beauty.

  • Easiest – Catch a taxi or tuk-tuk to Galu Devi Temple (from Mcleod Ganj or Bhagsu) and from there hike the 8-9 km to Triund Hill.
  • Moderate- (recommended) Make your own way up to Dharamkhot from Mcleod Gang or Bhagsu. From there head to Gallu Devi Temple and follow the (8-9km) path to Triund.
  • Hardest – From Mcleod Main Square head to Bhagsu Nag> Bhagsu Waterfall> Triund Top. (As a beginner, I do not recommend taking this route given the steep ascends and unclear markings).

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Top Hints and Tips for your trip:

  • Be sure to bring at least 2 litres of water as there are limited shops along the way. You cannot be sure what will be open/closed on your chosen day.
  • Carry some energy-rich snacks like nuts and fruit to keep you going.
  • There are no ATMs along the route so be sure to carry cash (to be safe, 1000rs per person per night).
  • I highly recommend a one-night stay at Triund . The trek is a tiring uphill walk and at night you can see the clearest stars . Furthermore, the quaint and peaceful morning had me feeling on top of the world!
  • There were no toilet facilities or power sources, so carry toilet paper and a power bank for your tech!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Additionally, a night to relax will give you power to head up (approx 90mins further) to the Snowline. To experience true mountain serenity the Snowline is a must-see and even better if you can continue onto Indarhah Pass!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Day 1: Trek to Triund

Starting at Bhagsu (which can be reached easily from Mcleod Ganj), we decided to set off around 8am. You want to find your way up to Gallu Devi Temple which can be reached by walking via Dharamkhot (Google maps works to some extent but your best bet is to ask a local if you get stuck). A good place to take a break, and I was panting already at this point. So, we stopped at the Sun and Moon Cafe, another option was the Cafe Gallu both offering chai and light breakfast (typically omelette or Maggi).

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Gallu Devi to Triund

And the real trek begins! The quiet paths from Gallu Devi to Triund will take you through dense forests on both sides and rocky steps along a moderately steep road. There are yellow arrows marked along the way, but keep looking out for the markings on stones to keep you on track.

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

We ended up taking 4- hours from Gallu up to Triund. Our pace probably varied, as the further up you go, the steeper and sharper the rocks get. Within 2km of reaching Triund, the soles of our feet were hurting and our stomachs rumbled. There is usually a highly recommended café named Magic View, but this was closed due to the #coronatimes.

Given it was a pretty cloudy day in the middle of September, the views were sporadic and fast-changing. One minute we were submerged in a thick sea of white cloud and the next a radiant view of over the Dhadular ranges emerged from the fog. However, travelling off-season and in the Corona times gave the trek an authentic and relaxed feel. Every so often a local Indian herding horses or cows hurried passed, very few tourists were around and we bumped into a massive herd of goats. I can imagine they’d usually be accompanied by a few more selfie cameras!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Finishing Day 1

Despite some clouds covering a lot of the view on day 1. We reached Triund just in time for sunset and caught some stunning shots. By the evening, the temperature dropped rapidly! We wrapped up in thick blankets and laid back under the stunning sparkly sky. Honestly, I have never seen so many stars in my life! We were completely alone given the corona times, and even saw 5 shooting stars pass! Luckily, we managed to have a dinner of rice and dal at our guesthouse, Moonlight Rooms despite the quiet tourist site.

Given the situation, we negotiated a cheap price of 700INR for a small room without a toilet or electricity. Usually, you can expect to pay 1000-1200INR for a tent, or 1500INR for a guesthouse. It was cold, but the silence and exhaustion from a days walking ensured we had a deep sleep!

Day 2: See the Snowline and Return via Bhagsunag Waterfall

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

We woke up at 6am, feeling refreshed and watched the incredible sunrise over the peaceful Dhauladhar ranges. Leaving behind the calm and beautiful settings of Triund, we began our voyage up to the Snowline. To reinforce, the pristine walk and the breathtaking views make the Snowline an absolute must see!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

The beauty is beyond words and caught me by surprise. By setting off early you can completely engross yourself in the spectacular views without worrying about time. There was also a small spot called the Snowline ‘Cafe’ which isn’t exactly a cafe but more a hut-like chaiwallah who serves omelette, Maggi and occasionally dal and rice.

After a simple omelette and chai, I perched on the edge of a rock, feeling proud, amazed and mesmerised. This became our spot for hours, and as there were fewer clouds it felt like no matter what, you hadn’t seen enough!

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Furthermore, with the energy and the time, you can see this guide up to the stunning Indarah Pass!

Finishing Day 2

I didn’t want to go… But there was a long walk back ahead of us and no manmade lighting would not make this a fun in the dark. So, at around 1pm, we headed back via the route in the direction of Triund.

Upon reaching Triund, and stopping for a quick chai, we checked the routes back to Triund on the tiniest bit of signal! I’d heard the trek up to Triund via Bhagsu waterfall was steep. But when a trekking application said walking back via Bhagsunag waterfall only took 2hrs45- we jumped at the opportunity.

triund trek distance from gallu devi temple

Well, seeing the other side, I was pleased we didn’t take this route up! The rocks were steep and sharp and at an incline that was considerably hard on the knees. There were also yellow arrows pointing us in the direction back to Bhagsu that ended up being helpful. And we used the Komoot app to keep us on trace. A small warning: overall this route is fun and adventurous, but arduous and confusing! Definitely a route for the thrill-seekers on the way up. But taking it on the way down gives you more stunning views and allows you to experience both routes of the Triund trek!

Downhill can easily feel harder than going uphill with this kind of terrain, and we completely exhausted upon reaching Bhagsu!

We had the best journey on our triund trek!

Reflecting on my trip, I discovered that solo trekking is a transformational experience. From the joy of pushing my abilities to the reward of stunning views at the end of the journey. The Triund trek was my first major hike and one that will inspire me to push myself to complete more challenging treks in the near future.

Triund Trek: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need For Triund

Table of contents.

Triund Trek- the most sought-after trek in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Three reasons-

  • It’s an easy and short trek. It can be easily done over a weekend.
  • Accessibility of the trek. Triund is in Dharamshala; Dharamshala is very well connected by road and air, and the starting point of the trek (Gallu Devi) is also easily accessible by road.
  • This👇

Triund Trek

The above three reasons all together make it a perfect weekend getaway destination, especially for North India.

Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the easiest and DIY Himalayan trek. It’s in Dharamshala, near Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh, India.

It’s easy because there’s a well-defined route to reach the Triund top. The trail goes through the woods of Oak trees, Pine, Deodar, and Rhododendron. The trail offers you a picturesque view of the spectacular Kangra valley on the one side and the mighty snow-covered Dhauladhar range on the other side.

You also get to see the birds’ eye view of the whole Kangra district and HPCA cricket stadium (the most beautiful cricket stadium of India). The trail offers absolutely stunning views.

View of Indrahar pass

However, the trail is always crammed with people. As I have told you, it’s the most sought after trek in North India and makes an ideal weekend getaway destination.

Now, let’s talk about Triund trek in detail.

Note : At the time of writing this, I am living in Bhagsunag village (one of the nearby villages to Triund) for the last six months, and in this much time, I’ve been to Triund 4-5 times. That means I know about Triund very well and writing this complete guide from a locals point of the eye.

For any sort of help regarding Triund trek, feel free to comment, email, or you can also WhatsApp me. You’ll find the whatsApp number in the last of the post.

Triund Trek Height

  • The height of the triund trek is 2850m; 9000 ft.
  • The height of the snowline (4 km ahead from Triund) is 3350m; 10000ft.

Triund Trek Difficulty Level

It’s a one size fits all type of trek. The Triund trek has got something for everybody; a first-timer, a beginner, and a veteran.

You may find the last stretch of the trail a bit challenging. It’s also famously known as ’22 curves’ as it has 22 tiring curves that you’ve to cross before you reach the Triund top.

Honestly, I never felt it challenging. Maybe because of my fitness; I run daily. But some people do find it difficult.

Triund Trek Distance

  • Gallu Devi (the starting point of the trek) to Triund distance: 7 Km
  • Mcleodganj to Triund distance: 9 km
  • Dharamshala to Triund distance: 18-20 km

Triund Trek Length

It depends on, where do you start the trek.

  • Gallu Devi – 7km (the usual and the official route)
  • Bhagsunag via Henni village – 7 km
  • Bhagsunag waterfall via Karthani – 6 km

Best Time For Triund Trek

  • The best time for Triund is from April to June , and October to December .

Note : Don’t do the Triund trek in the rainy season. It rains heavily here in Dharamshala. In winter, the route gets closed because Triund receives heavy snowfall.

Triund Trek Route

There are three routes to go to Triund:

  •   Gallu Devi – It’s the official one. All the tourists take this route only. You’ll also find the tour guide here only.
  • Bhagsunag Village – Locals and nearby villagers, take this route and also some tourists those who are aware of this route. This route goes through the Heini village of upper Bhagsu, and after some distance, it gets adjoined to the usual Gallu Devi route. The trail is not well defined, so the chances are you may get lost.
  • Bhagsunag waterfall – This trail is very steep and goes through dense forests. It’s advisable not to trek through this route without any local guide.

Triund Trek Package

I have to be honest here.

I genuinely don’t want you to opt for any packages provided by these irresponsible travel companies. By choosing these travel companies, you’re indirectly harming the ecosystem, and anyway, they charge you a lot more than the reasonable rate.

Before you decide to go with any of the travel company, ask them about their company’s environmental and responsible tourism policies. Choose only those who support responsible tourism.

FYI : The ban on overnight camping at Triund top got imposed last year only. The travel companies and we are equally responsible for this. It’s good that its banned now.

Last year on New Year’s Eve, there were more than 2000 people at Triund. Can you imagine the negative impacts of this? At such a height, where would all waste go?

Locals tell that there was nothing but tissues, bottles, sanitary pads, and plastic bottles.

Please be a responsible traveler.

Take all your trash back to the city where it can be appropriately decomposed and also don’t bring any speaker. I don’t understand what’s need to come in nature to listen to songs, you can do that in your room.

Locals also tell that earlier, there used to be a lot of songbirds. Now it’s just water bottles and Lays packets.

PedalThrottle recommendation: Hire any local tour guide from the nearby village. I’ll help you with that.

Why should you go with a local tour guide instead of a company?

  • Locals care about their place, the environment more than the tourists, and any other travel company. Their intention is never just to make money.
  • They’ll tell you lovely stories about the place as it’s their native place. Who can be a better person than locals to talk about their place?
  • They’re always willing to go the extra mile for you to make your experience memorable.  Like a travel company, they never want to just get rich off of you.
  • By choosing them, you support their livelihood.

A Guide to the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj + Insider Tips (2024)

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

If you’re planning on doing the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj, Dharamshala, you have come to the right place!

McLeodCanj, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is most famous for being the home of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. This town is close to the city of Dharamshala (a flight or night bus away from Delhi ) and tourists from all over the world come here to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in McLeodGanj , and this town is also home to one of the best Himalayan treks to do on your own: the trek to Triund Hill.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on trekking to Triund. You can hike to Triund in 1 or 2 days . I did this hike by myself in one day, but it is also possible to camp at Triund and hike back the next day, but more about this later!

How to do the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

View on the way to Tirund Hill in McLeodGanj

There are two hiking trails to reach Triund Hill, and they both start in Bhagsu, which is a 20 to 30-minute walk from McLeodGanj.

While nearly everyone takes the easiest trail to hike to Triund and Back, I highly recommend making a loop and taking the easy trail to hike up and the difficult trail to hike back down.

I did it the other way around and took the difficult trail to hike up. This was my favourite one, as I only encountered two other hikers and found the landscape more beautiful here.

This guide describes how to hike up the easier way and hike back down the more difficult way. It speaks for itself that you can also do the hike the other way around as I did, though.

Tip: The way to Triund can easily be found using Maps.me. This app comes in particularly handy for the more difficult trail, as the path isn’t always as straightforward here.

Do you need a guide to hike to Triund?

Although you can hire a guide to do this trek, this is not necessary and many people hike independently. The path is easy to follow and the hike is not too difficult.

However, if you don’t have much hiking experience and would prefer to do the hike with a guide, you can book the guided Triund trek on GetYourGuide. This trek takes 2 days and includes a guide, camping and food.

Hiking from McLeodGanj to Triund

Triund Hill in Himachal Pradesh

If you’re starting in McLeodGanj, you will first have to head to Bhagsu , which is 2,5 km (1.5 mi) from McLeodGanj. You can either get here by walking or by taking a taxi.

From Bhagsu, you will have to hike (or continue the taxi drive) all the way up to the Gallu Devi Temple . This is where you will find the start of the path to Triund. It all depends on your personal pace, but it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get from Bhagsu to Gallu. The right path can easily be found either by asking a local or using Maps.me.

From here on, it is pretty straightforward. There are arrows marking the way to Triund and it is difficult to get lost, as there’s only one path.

It takes a total of approximately 4 to 6 hours to reach Triund (the total distance is around 10 km or 6.2 mi), depending on your personal pace.

It is good to know that there are some shops and restaurants on the trail from Gallu to Triund.

Hiking to Triund Hill

Once you reach Triund, you will have a beautiful view of the Dhauladhar Mountain Range . This includes a view of Moon Peak, Riflehorn and Arthur’s seat.

It is quite big there and this is a nice place to stay for a while (or camp if you want to do the trek in 2 days). By the time I reached Triund, the sky wasn’t clear anymore and you couldn’t really see the mountains, but this is what it looks like on a clear day:

Triund Hill on a clear day

Camping at Triund (optional)

It is possible to camp at Triund if you would like to do the hike in 2 days, although it is possible to do it in 1 day too. I didn’t stay the night at Triund myself, but I’ve heard it is amazing, as you will be able to see the sunset/sunrise and sleep under the stars.

If you want to camp at Triund , it is good to know that you can rent a tent and sleeping bags in the shops there. If you’re visiting the place during the high season, at the weekend or in the holidays, it is better to book in advance, though, as the tents might be booked out (just ask the place where you’re staying in McLeodGanj to book it for you).

Another option is to stay at the government guesthouse . This place can be booked at the Forest Department Office of Dharamshala (+91 1892-224887).

Camping at Triund

Hiking further: the Laka Glacier Trek (optional)

I didn’t do this myself, but once you reach Triund, it is possible to hike further and do the Laka Glacier Trek. This is a 2 km (1.2 mi) long, steep uphill trek and it is quite strenuous.

This being said, this trek will take you higher along the breathtaking landscapes of the Dhauladhar snow-clad mountains and Kangra Valley. As its name predicts, the Laka Glacier Trek ends at the Laka Glacier, which stands 3,200 m (10,498 ft) above sea level.

It is good to know that you will need 2 or 3 days if you decide to hike to this glacier.

Hiking back to McLeodGanj

View of Bhagsu from Triund

To hike back to McLeodGanj, you can follow the Triund – Karthani Trail , on the southern side of Triund Hill. This trail will pass the Bhagsu Waterfall before reaching the centre of Bhagsu.

Note that the Triund – Karthani Trail is not as straightforward as the trail to hike up, but it is not so hard to follow with a little help from Maps.me.

This trail was my favourite part of the hike. It is not much frequented, the landscapes are amazing and I encountered plenty of sheep and goats along the way, which gave me some nice photo opportunities.

Sheep and goats on the Karthani Trail

Difficulty of the trek to Triund

The Triund Trek is considered a moderate trek . It is not too difficult, but you will need an average fitness level to complete it.

The elevation at Triund is 2,875 m (9,432 ft), while McLeodGanj is at 2,082 m (6,831 ft), so you will ascend about 800 m (2,600 ft) during the hike. This takes a total of 4 to 6 hours and the trek covers about 10 km (6.2 mi) one way.

Although you can do this trek in one day (which is what I did and it is very doable), it will be easier if you camp at Triund and split the hike into 2 days.

If you decide to hike further to the Laka Glacier, you will have to hike up an additional 325 m (1,066 ft).

Best time to do the Triund Trek

The best time to trek to Triund is in the Summer, between the months of March and June . This is when the weather will be at its best and the views will be most clear. You can expect temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) at this time of the year.

July to September is the monsoon season. So this is not a good time to trek to Triund unless you don’t mind the rain and slipperiness.

The Winter lasts from October to February and it is possible to do the trek to Triund during this season too. Do note that there will be snow if you’re going in January or February.

Tips for hiking to Triund

  • Make a loop rather than going down the same way as you came up (this is what most people do).
  • Use Maps.me to navigate easily.
  • Bring water , snacks and sunscreen , and wear comfortable shoes . I wore hiking boots, but this trek can also be done with sneakers.
  • Consider camping for a night to see the sunset/sunrise.

Where to stay in McLeodGanj

There are plenty of places to stay in and around McLeodganj. You can opt for McLeodGanj itself, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

While McLeodGanj is the place where the Dalai Lama lives, Bhagsu is a 20-minute walk from here and it is quieter. Dharamkot is a 30-minute walk from Bhagsu and it is also quieter than McLeodGanj.

Although McLeodGanj is often referred to as Dharamshala , I would not stay in this city, as it is located 5 km (3.1 mi) downhill of McLeodGanj and it is far from the main tourist attractions.

I stayed in Bhagsu as well as in McLeodGanj while I was there, you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Shree Guest House ( ⭐ 8.3) : Shree Guest House was my favourite place to stay in the area. This guesthouse is located in a quiet area in McLeodGanj, just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the main street. The rooms are nice and clean, there’s a shared balcony, the wifi is good and Nadish, the owner, is amazing!
  • Hotel Norbu House (⭐ 9.3): If you’re looking for a more luxurious place to stay with a beautiful view, Hotel Norbu House is the place for you. This hotel is located in a quiet street, near the centre of McLeodGanj and it has all the amenities you might need.
  • Eevolve Dharamkot (⭐ 8.3): Located in Dharamkot, this eco hostel offers beautiful rooms and a garden. This is a great place to stay if you’re planning on staying in the area for a little longer and would like to enrol in yoga classes, for example.

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj: Final thoughts

The trek to Triund is one of the most popular hikes in Dharamshala and it is easy to understand why. Not only are the landscapes beautiful, but this is also a trek that can easily be done independently.

All in all, this was a trek I really enjoyed, even though the sky wasn’t clear anymore by the time I reached Triund. If I would do it again, I would camp at Triund as this increases the chance of having a clear view.

I hope that this guide was clear and that you have found exactly what you were looking for. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions. I’m updating this post frequently.

Mcleodganj to Triund Trek – A Day of Adventure & Fun

This article is in continuation with a previous one and part of my Mcleodganj Travelogue . Our entire trip lasted for a total of 4 days. It was one of my very first trips that started the whole traveling and blogging passion that finally resulted in this blog as it stands today. We traveled from Delhi to Mcleodganj on Day 1, spent day 2 sightseeing in Mcleodganj, went on the famous Mcleodganj to Triund trek on Day 3 and returned home on Day 4. Details of the third day of the journey are as mentioned further in this article. To read the previous part of the travelogue, please click on the link below.

Journey So Far: Sightseeing in Mcleodganj – Bhagsu Waterfall and Bhagsu Nag Temple

Trekking to Triund is considered to be the topmost tourist activity in Mcleodganj. In fact, Triund is probably what attracts half of the tourist population here. Climbing to the top of the hill and staying there overnight in a camp is indeed a memorable experience. Sadly for us, we were not aware of this as our research on either Mcleodganj or Triund was next to none. As we were preparing that morning for the trek, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into or where were we headed. All that I knew was what I learned from the local I spoke to the day before; that it is a trek to a spot from where you get great views. And that is it.

Mcleodganj to Triund

Before I get further into the travelogue, let me first post a brief summary on what Triund is all about. I know all this now but had no idea 3 months ago when I undertook this trek.

Triund is a trekking destination located about 18 kilometers from Dharamshala and about 11 kilometers from Mcleodganj. Of this entire distance, only 7 kilometers is the actual trek, rest all can be covered by a motorable road. It is a large land of green grass which is the endpoint of this 7 kilometers long walk. This is the point from where you start trekking back to Mcleodganj. The spot sits at top of the mountain and provides a 360 degrees view of the valley around. There are a few campsites, dhabas, tea stalls and even an HPPWD rest house built here. So you can either walk back on the same day (if time allows) or you could stay at Triund for the night and trek back the next morning.

Mcleodganj to Triund Trek

Mcleodganj was my first trip to a hill station so yes; Triund was also my first trek ever. I had never been on a trek before and had no idea how I will do on one. All that I knew about myself was that I am a regular at the gym, can run about 5 kilometers easily, so walking an equal distance should not be a problem. I went on it with zero preparations, none whatsoever. That morning when I stepped out of the hotel with Rahul and Shiraz, I was wearing floater sandals, half sleeve T-Shirt, knee-length shorts and held only a camera in my hand. That is pretty much it. Below is a picture.

Mcleodganj to Triund Trek Distance

The total distance of the trek is actually 7 kilometers but Triund top is about 11 kilometers from the main town. The trek starts from Gallu Devi Temple after Dharamkot. So an ideal way to do this is to board either a taxi or a rickshaw that can drop you to Gallu Devi temple. After the temple, the actual trekking will begin which will remain on the easier side for the initial 4 kilometers. It is only the last 2-3 kilometers of walk that will get a bit steep and difficult. The difficulty level of the trek will vary between easy to moderately challenging but it can easily be done by a person of average fitness.

Start of the Trek

I had no idea about any of what I stated above. This is the research that I did for writing this travelogue and after coming back from the trip. My two companions, Rahul and Shiraz, had no knowledge of the trek either. As a matter of fact, all three of us that morning started from the hotel wearing sandals, half-sleeve T-shirts and shorts.

We started our trek from the hotel itself. It was early in the morning at around 7 so there was hardly anyone around. We could have boarded a cab till Dharamkot or Gallu Devi temple but there was none that we could find that morning. Actually, we weren’t even looking for one because we did not know anything about how long the motorable road will last or where the trek will begin from. We just stepped out of the hotel, asked a local about the trek and started walking in the direction he pointed.

About 15 minutes later, Shiraz decided to give up and return to the hotel. He was not feeling too well that morning and wanted to rest.  I did not push him too much either and decided to let him go back. So now it was just Rahul and I on the trek.

Mcleodganj to Triund Top

Not much to write about this part really because not much happened but at the same time we had a lot of fun. We continued walking to Gallu Devi temple from where the dirt track starts. On and on we went with no idea of how far did we still need to go. Everyone we asked told us that the top was just around the corner. We did not mind though. The trek was fun and vistas were mesmerizing.

vargis khan

Yes, that is how I climbed Triund. With nothing but a packet of cigarettes in my pocket. There were several eating places en route where we stopped and had parathas or Maggie. One thing I would like to mention is that everything is very costly on the trek. If you order a plate of Maggie, it will easily cost you about Rs. 50. A 20 Rs. water bottle gets sold here for Rs. 60.

We clicked loads of pictures, took plenty of breaks and as a direct result, it took us about 6 hours to get to the top. That is correct. By the time we were standing at Triund top, the clock was showing slightly past 1 PM.

mcleodganj to triund trek

Triund turned out to be a huge disappointment. Not because it was not as beautiful as we heard but because it was all cloudy all around. There was nothing that we could see except for the white clouds. There were no great vistas that we were told, no mesmerizing valleys and no breathtaking scenery. Just a wall of white clouds everywhere.

We decided to wait for a while and ordered something to eat at one of the dhabas at the top. We were both dead tired by now; and hungry as well. What neither of us bothered to look at that time was a watch. We kept sitting there waiting for the clouds to clear for almost an hour and had quite a heavy lunch as well. Clouds however refused to move and after with our tummies full, we finally decided to start on our way back.

It had taken us 6 hours to get to the top which meant that we would have to hurry back in order to make it back to Mcleodganj before dark. It was about 3 PM when we started back and trust me when I say this, we literally jogged our way back. Sun was setting down quite fast and we started to do a mix of walking and jogging to finish the way faster.

Did we make it back in time? Yes we did. It was around 6 PM when we made it back to our hotel. So we made good time but at quite a big price. All the jogging on the trail wearing floaters ensured that both our feet got hurt several times and by night, my right foot was swollen so badly that I could not even put it inside a shoe.

End of Day 3

I retired to my room and rested for a while. We all stepped out of the hotel at around 9 PM and went to a nearby restaurant for dinner It was going to be our last night in Mcleodganj so we wanted to make the best out of it. We ate, talked, drank (for me just tea, juice and coke) sang and finally came back to the hotel well past midnight. Please click on the link below to read the last part of this travelogue.

Journey Ahead: Mcleodganj to Delhi – The Journey Home

Before we move on to the next article though, below are a few details about the trek that can be of help to anyone planning it in near future.

Mcleodganj to Triund by Car

There is no motorable road to Triund top and the 7 kilometers long trail can only be covered by foot. By Car, you can only make it as far as Gallu Devi Temple but will have to walk the rest of the distance.

Mcleodganj to Triund Trek Time

How long it takes for you to complete the trek will entirely depend on your speed and breaks you take. But on an average basis, from Gallu Devi Temple, it takes about 3 hours to reach the top and 2 hours to walk down. If you walked from Mcleodganj itself, time taken for Triund trek will easily be 6 to 7 hours to reach the top and12 hours for a return trip on the same day like it did for us.

Mcleodganj Triund Camping

Accommodation at Triund is available in the form of a Forest rest house and campsites but only in tourist season. During winter, both of these options become unavailable after it starts to snow and weather turns extremely cold. Where to stay will depend entirely on your personal choice but the majority of the people chose to camp here. You do not have to book in advance and will easily find a camp site on arrival.

The camp sites will charge between Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 per person. A tent big enough to accommodate 4 people will cost Rs. 1500 with sleeping bags. This does not include any meal charges and you will have to pay for the food separately.

If you want to try self-camping then you would either have to bring in your own gear or rent one from any sports shop in Mcleodganj. Problem with self camping is to carry all that gear to the top, then the hassle of setting and wrapping it up and you may not even get a good spot to camp because they are all mostly occupied already by campsite owners. I will rather suggest that you stay at a campsite only. It is not that costly and will save you a lot of trouble.

Travel can leave imprints not just in terms of memories but also in terms of what one sees away from the world that he comes from. That is exactly what I experienced at Triund.

Triund can be approached via a moderate 6 kilometer trek from Galu Maheshwari temple near Dharamkot. Various ways to reach Guna Devi Base are

  • Naddi Village –> Dharamkot –> Gallu Devi Temple (Can be covered on a car as well as on foot)
  • Mcleodganj & Bhagsunag –> Dharamkot –> Gallu Devi Temple (Can be covered on a car as well as on foot)

My route was McleodGanj – – > Dal Lake –> Tibetan Children’s Village School – -> Gallu Devi Temple, since my friend Norbu Jinpa who accompanied with me in trek works at the school and stays near the Dal Lake

The trail starts with a gentle climb from Galu Maheshwari Temple till café Magic View. The trail is a wide, well-marked and well-known path and there are no bifurcation along the way

Triund is the best vantage point for Dhauladhar gazing and peering over the Kangra Valley

Photo of Triund Trek 19/26 by Sri Harsha

There are two cafes on the way, one of which is known as ‘Magic view’ cafe. i t is known to be the oldest Chai Shop running since 1984 .  It is situated at a vantage point when Triund is almost 2kms away. One can sit, relax, and enjoy munchies along with breathtaking views of the entire Kangra valley.  This café is halfway in terms of distance but it is almost a third of the way in terms of effort.

Photo of Triund Trek 20/26 by Sri Harsha

Throughout the trek I had amazing views, at some turns the whole Kullu Valley was visible and it was mesmerizing.

Photo of Triund Trek 22/26 by Sri Harsha

After Magic View café the ascent gets a tad steeper and it ends in a steep one kilometre stretch through a forest of Deodars and Rhododendron.

After this point, the trek starts to test your stamina. The elevation is still not much, but the number of points after which I wanted to catch my breath were increasing. Though, having a look at the view actually fills you with a lot of energy and happiness

This final stretch through the woods is known as 22-curves, because of the 22 switchbacks that one has to walk through to get to Triund. The last 1 hour stretch was probably the steepest and the path was little difficult. I was fully exhausted.

Photo of Triund Trek 23/26 by Sri Harsha

The views from the Triund Hill make you want for more. The mighty Dhauladhar range is not at a distance. It’s right there so close to you that you cannot absorb the entire view in one look.

Be ready to shift your gaze as you let the panorama sink in. You can see 4 peaks namely Camel Peak, Indrahaar, Moon Peak and the Matterhorn.

GETTING THERE

Buses ply regularly to Mcleodganj from Dharamshala. From Mcleodganj one can make an easy walk to Galu Maheshwari Temple near Dharamkot. You can also rent a taxi / auto rickshaw at Mcleodganj bus stand to ferry you to Galu Temple. Taxi charges 200 to 400 rupees one way (2015) between Mcleodganj bus stand and Galu Temple

ACCOMMODATION

The stay options in Triund have increased recently. The oldest structure is a forest guest house which can be booked in Dharamsala. The booking office lies behind Park Restaurant opposite to Dharamsala Police Station and General Post Office. Another privately owned guest house with two rooms is run by a tea shop owner. A room at either of these guest houses cost around 500 rupees / night. You can rent a tents and beddings at tea shops in Triund. If you are feeling adventurous, a couple of caves to the South end of the ridge offer free accommodation. However, this winter we recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5 degrees C at night (with windchill), so its better to keep an eye out for the weather and be prepared.

Pleasant during the day, if it is sunny. Below zero degree C at night in December and January. Could go as low as -9 with windchill.

No water source en-route or at Triund. The tea shops charge 50 rupees for a bottle of water. If you are on a limited budget its best to carry your own water and eatables.

TRIUND TEA SHOP MENU (2016 PRICES)

  • Bottled Water Rs. 40
  • Maggi Noodles Rs. 70
  • Maggi Noodles (with vegetables) Rs. 90
  • Rice with Dal Rs. 100
  • Rice with Dal and Roti Rs. 150

Tips to the travelers : (Specially first timers)

1. Carry atleast one water bottle per person and drink the minimum amount required.

2. Do not carry any extra baggage.

3. The trek takes about 4 hours uphill and 3 hours downhill. If you donot plan to stay for the night, I’d recommend you to be back before sunset (Camping at night is recomended)

4. There’s no signal and medical station on the trek. If you are sick, scared of heights or likely to have breathing troubles, you should not take this trek

My Advice to First Timers : If you are planning for a Solo Trip, just take the leap of faith, take that very difficult and all important first step, it will all fall in place trust me, it usually is meant to.

Gallu Devi Waterfall, Mcleodganj Overview

A hidden gem in Upper Dharamshala, Gallu Devi Waterfall is located about 10 minutes away from Gallu Devi Temple and serves as a popular trekking destination. It is situated on the Bhated stream, with numerous tiny natural pools around, and the short yet tricky trek passes through narrow rocky routes lined with trees and plants on all sides. A pipeline supplying water to Dharamkot Village serves as a guide and support on the slippery path, and the journey culminates with a gorgeous view of the Dhauladhar ranges. There are small tea shops on the route selling refreshments.
