One third to the concert I was on the brink of an anxiety attack. Half way through, I had to leave prematurely. Too much bad ambient&drone long streched sequences, not enough hypnoticism to get into it, but also lack of inventive disparateness of music ala Captain Beefheart to enjoy it. The result: post traumatic stress, had to drink two beers to calm myself down. I should have gone shitfaced like the last year, when I really had a blast.

I went to see The Swans at Berghain Panorama bar on my own as I was in Berlin on my own after Brexiting myself from the UK perhaps a little early with a few negative issues in tow. I found myself completely transfixed from the very start and for the entire duration of the two hour set as I was submerged under a collapsing wall of sound that the band relentlessly grinded out and pushed forward over the audience. The experience fell over you like it was scraping something from you, something you didn’t need. I felt shaken loose by it all and things sort of just fell away. It was so strong that I’m guessing this was the intention and that a lot of the audience were experiencing the same thing, and yet for all the sonic rubble that catapulted outward from each speaker that had an inverted microphone dangling in front of it like a black tulip on a long limp stem, Gira at the same time managed to build everything up. It all had a flow and function to it. Near the end his arms stretched outwards and shook like a shaman accessing some natural power while his hands fluttered behind him like he was conducting the very molecules in the air. It was an outstanding and remarkably stunning performance from all the band members. I just thought ‘thank you’ when I was on my way out.
By far the loudest concert I've been to. My ears were ringing afterwards. It was physically painful to an extent -
you actually felt the sound hit you. There was an element of masochism to it: 'Yes, hurt me with the sound; I don't care.'
Gira was conducting some mass ritual. He was like a conductor on stage waving his arms about to the other band members, wielding the sound like a weapon. Really quite hypnotic too. It was masterful how they manipulated tension, repetition and catharsis.

About Swans
Swans is an experimental rock band founded in 1982 by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. The group has done extensive touring and recorded prolifically over a long career, oscillating between an abrasive, guitar-based approach in the 1980s to varying degrees of incorporation of electronic and/or acoustic instrumentation in the 2000s. Utilizing a rigorous and lengthy process of trial and experimentation, many of Swans' albums and compositions captivate listeners through their sonic depth and texture, focusing on repetition and drones to create a hypnotic and meditative atmosphere. Since its inception, Swans has released sixteen studio albums and its lineup has shifted regularly over the years; frontman Michael Gira remains the only constant member of the band. Swans most recently released their album 'Leave Home' in 2020.

AFL Finals: Swans ‘pull rabbit out of hat’ to leave cross-town rivals ‘heartbroken’ by record result
Sydney have “pulled a rabbit out of the hat”, according to Fox Footy’s Jason Dunstall, to create AFL history and book themselves a home prelim with a stunning six-point win over Greater Western Sydney.
Despite heading into Saturday’s contest having never beaten their cross-town rival in a final, the Swans produced a miracle fourth quarter to overcome a 21-point deficit and overrun the Giants.
Led all game by Swans star Isaac Heeney, Sydney produced “one of the most amazing quarters of finals football”, according to Fox Footy’s David King to break Giants hearts in the qualifying final.

“In the end, their star factor players are the difference (for Sydney) – they are All Australian for a reason,” he said.
“You pay them they way you do to win games like this.
“That is one of the most amazing quarters of finals football that I’ve ever seen.
“I’m still trying to work out how the Giants haven’t won this game after the first three quarters of football.”

The Giants had never lost a match under coach Adam Kingsley when leading at three quarter time (holding 23-0 record) before the Swans turned the match completely on its head.
Chad Warner (final quarter: 13 disposals and seven clearances), Errol Gulden (final quarter: 11 disposals and five score involvements) and Tom Papley all lifted to support Heeney before Joel Amartey nailed the match winner with less than two minutes to play.
And it was super sub Braeden Campbell who provided the run desperately missing from GWS to ensure it was Sydney locked in for a home preliminary final.
“That’s exactly what you want from a sub to have a massive impact,” Fox Footy’s Leigh Montagna said.
“Their desire and want to win the game was off the charts.
“Full credit to the Giants, they were enormous. But they looked like they were out of legs in that last bit.”
The Giants had led for almost the entirety of the match until that Amartey moment in heartbreaking scenes for the orange tsunami.
“They’ll be heartbroken after that,” Dunstall said of GWS.
“They had a lot of things go their way the Giants and they didn’t get it done.
“Just weren’t able to close it.”
“They’ll be really disappointed because they left a goals on the table early and they left the door ajar for the Swans,” King added.
The Swans backline had looked “lost” at times against the Giants, according to King, but stood tall when it counted in the final term.
GWS will rue their wayward goal kicking in the opening half where they only held a 21-point lead – despite “hammering” the Swans through the middle.
“They didn’t really have a right to be that close,” Montagna said of the Swans at three quarter time.
“Heeney couldn’t have done much more in those first three quarters to give them chance. He carried them and then they all jumped on board in that fourth term.”

Backing vocals are provided by Jennifer Gira, Lucy Kruger and Laura Carbone.
Michael Gira founded the groundbreaking NYC band Swans in 1982. Initially notorious for their relentless, brutal, high-volume onslaughts of sound, the extreme, abject imagery of Gira's lyrics and his thundering vocals, Swans would undergo a series of startling transformation over the next 15 years.
Following the punishing Filth and Cop albums, the ensemble would venture into harshly mechanical proto-industrial rock of their Greed period, then both haunted atmospheric idylls and martial stomps on 1987's landmark Children of God double album.
They'd conjure gentler acoustic-based meditations on The Burning World (1989), then after relocating to Atlanta grand, melody-dense sonic whirlwinds of the White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991) and Love of Life (1993) era, becoming more dissonant and sharp-edged with The Great Annihilator (1994).
Finally, the ultimate statement of that epoch of Swans, Soundtracks For The Blind (1996), incorporated all of these elements across well over two hours of music. At this point, Gira called it quits after 15 years of non-stop recording and touring, disbanding the group. For the next 13 years, he'd make a long series of acclaimed albums and perform live extensively with a revolving roster of musicians under the name Angels Of Light.
Gira also discovered, produced and released albums by other musicians through his label Young God Records. He cultivated such talents as Devendra Banhart and Akron/Family among others, the original figures of the late 00's Avant-folk movement.
In 2010, he reactivated Swans, releasing the studio album My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky to ecstatic critical response and touring the world for the better part of a year. The Seer, a triple album studio set, came out in 2012 and was celebrated by another lengthy world tour eliciting more media praise and album sales that landed The Seer on Billboard's Top 200. Swans' next release, To Be Kind (another triple vinyl) debuted at #36 on Billboard's Top 200 Sales Chart and #5 on their Independent Sales Chart.
The group sold out 47 concert dates in their subsequent touring including selling out two-night stands in cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Paris, as well as single shows in London, Berlin and Rome.
The album garnered enormous praise from the press, and the two-hour long album stream was premiered by NPR. The Glowing Man (2017) (also triple vinyl) was the last studio release by this incarnation of Swans. With 2019's Leaving Meaning, the 15th studio album, Gira returned to working with a fluid supporting cast of musicians once again.

Big, big turnaround: Swans' late surge breaks Giants hearts
Sydney comes from the clouds to claim a six-point win over Greater Western Sydney in a thrilling qualifying final
A JOEL Amartey goal with less than two minutes on the clock has completed a stunning comeback from Sydney as it trumped Greater Western Sydney by six points in an epic qualifying final on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing at every change, the minor premier looked destined for defeat before Isaac Heeney launched from the centre square to level the scores. Amartey then kicked the match-winner to claim the gritty 13.10 (88) to 12.10 (82) victory at the SCG.

John Longmire's men will host a preliminary final in a fortnight, while the Giants face a semi-final against the winner of the Brisbane and Carlton elimination final on Saturday night.
It is the first time the Swans have defeated their local rivals in September.

The ever-reliable Heeney was the hero for Sydney, kicking three goals, collecting 30 disposals and clocking up seven clearances. He also took an absolute screamer that could have been a Virgin Australia Mark of the Year contender had not been in a final.
Defender Jake Lloyd (one goal, 32 touches), Chad Warner (27 disposals, seven clearances) and Errol Gulden (23, five) also came to life in the final term.
Tom Papley, playing his first match since sustaining a medial ankle ligament injury in round 19, booted two goals for the Swans.

Hogan marks Coleman win with mega opener
Jesse Hogan launches a stunning effort from distance to get the Giants off to a flying start
Coleman Medal winner Jesse Hogan had the Giants on-song early with two goals in the opening term, before a desperate James Rowbottom made it seven points the difference at the first change.
After a quiet build-up to the match, tensions finally boiled over in an all-in melee when Giants skipper Toby Greene was too slow to give the ball over to Papley for an after-the-siren free kick on quarter-time.
Papley then hit the scoreboard in the second term, but the Giants broke out to a 21-point lead after kicking three unanswered goals.
The popular Swans forward could come under fire after making contact with Giants head of football Jason McCartney at half-time.
Spurred on by a determined Heeney, Sydney began to regroup in the third term.
After claiming a spectacular mark on the back of Giants defender Jack Buckley, Heeney kicked his second of the match in a bid to lift his team.
But another Hogan goal kept the Swans at bay.
The home side's woes continued when defender Tom McCartin dropped in on Lewis Melican as the latter attempted to mark the ball, with Aaron Cadman easily sweeping up the dropped Sherrin for his third goal as Sydney coach Longmire watched on in frustration.
The Swans opened the final term with three successive goals, before Heeney levelled the scores.
Hogan was sensational for the Giants, terrorising the Swans defenders all game to kick three goals and take eight marks.
Tom Green (32 disposals, 10 clearances) and Josh Kelly (27, six) did the heavy lifting through the middle for Greater Western Sydney, while young gun Cadman (three) was also electrifying up forward.
Jesse picks up where he left off Recently crowned Coleman Medallist Jesse Hogan wasted no time in asserting himself in the game. The reborn forward kicked the opening goal of the match with a long-range bomb from just outside the centre square, and followed up for the Giants' second goal with a brilliant crumbing kick from a pack in the goalsquare minutes later. Hogan's hot start was key to the Giants' early dominance, with the spearhead finishing with an equal game-high three goals.
No love lost between local rivals It's always a little spicy when these two sides meet, and this game was no different. Tensions were high throughout a fiery opening term and they finally spilled over on the quarter-time siren when Tom Papley earned a free kick after Toby Greene collected him high. Papley took his kick - which fell well short of the goals - before an all-in melee erupted between the sides, with Greene and Papley in the thick of it.
Heeney hits new heights Isaac Heeney hit new heights in more ways than one as he single-handedly tried to drag his side into the game. He's one-handed pluck and subsequent goal in the second term was special, but the fan-favourite followed that up with a grab that would rival the Goal of the Year finalists. But it wasn't just his high-flying antics that lifted the side, with Heeney key in the Swans' superb final-quarter comeback. The ball magnet finished with an equal game-high three goals along with 30 disposals (18 contested) and seven clearances.

Oh mah gaaawd!
Your boners make me happy
My Brother is a big Necks fan…he’d fucking hate Swans though.
Swans have never played NZ or Oz…NZ & Oz are about to get a sonic POONING.
A Swans gig is the emotional catharsis I’ve been searching for ever since my rather soul destroying divorce. The timing couldn’t have been more appropriate.
Currently listening to:
Children Of God
really fucking loud!!
I’m hoping to get photos of the Glasgow Swans set on the 25th to get you hyped.
I’ve never heard of The Necks.
This news however is fantastic.
Wish Jarboe was included - her contributions are sorely missed on the new Swans album. I am enjoying it though, especially the last two tracks.
I’d love to see Jesu support Swans…and then have Justin come out onstage and jam with Swans for their encore.
See the show - someone went to the Brooklyn gig and they said it was so loud that the neighbors almost called the authorities
I has bought teh tickets!!
Now to play the waiting game…
@ Olsen…I thought you’d be more of a Godflesh support type of guy than a jesu support???

We had a fabulous time. The scenery was breath taking. Star gazing on the night with no moon was priceless. Touching a glacier, jumping into 'gin clear' water (fishing guides term), I could go on and on. Thank you again.
