Best time to visit namibia.

The best time to visit Namibia depends on what you want to see and do. The dry season (May-September) is considered the best time to explore the Nabim Desert and go on safari as the temperatures are comfortable, vegetation is thin and wildlife congregates around waterholes.

The shoulder months (April and October) may be a better option for a safari without peak season crowds; however, Namibia's national parks and reserves never feel  too  crowded.

While it can be trickier to spot game in the wet season (November-March), you might be lucky to see cute newborns as it coincides with the birthing season.

Culture and customs

Human settlement in Namibia can be traced back to as early as 15000 BC. In the time since, a diverse mix of people and communities have inhabited Namibia, culminating in a unique cultural heritage made of symbolic beliefs, traits, and traditions.

Today, most of the population sits within the larger Aawambo cultural group found mostly in the north of Namibia. Other large cultural groups that make up Namibia are the Nama, Damara, Kavango, and Ovaherero people.

Namibia was colonized by Germany from the late 1800s until 1919. Because of this, Europeans now make up 5 percent of the population. German influences can be seen throughout Namibia by way of cuisine, language, architecture and more. As much as 10 percent of Namibia’s population is made up of people who have migrated from South Africa.

The national language is English, however many Namibians also speak multiple Indigenous languages, such as the Aawambo language.

Eating and drinking

Like many countries, the majority of Namibia’s cuisine stems from the traditional cooking techniques and produce found in the area. In more recent times, immigrating cultures, specifically German and English, have added to the culinary scene. With a large variation of meats to cook with, it’s no surprise that many of the popular dishes feature meat in some way, often accompanied by a strong flavor and paired carbohydrate.

There are plenty of options for non-meat eaters, too. Some must-tries include green asparagus, omboga (dried spinach), Namibian olives, owawa mushrooms, geelrys (rice dish), oshigali (puree beans) and more.

Things to try in Namibia

A staple daily dish to many, mieliepap is a porridge-like meal usually made with cornflour and served with a selection of vegetables or even a meat protein like fish or goat.

A dish cooked in a small iron pot, potjiekos is a stew that typically combines game meat with hearty vegetables like cauliflower, pumpkin, and cabbage.

This dish is of Dutch and Afrikaans origin and serves as a way to store meat. By using a savory rub of flavored spices, salt, and vinegar, then left to air dry, biltong is a tasty snack that can last for a long time if cured correctly.

Namibian oysters are known to be meatier and fast-growing than in other areas of the world. They are likely to be prepared differently depending on where you go.

Fat cakes are a very popular snack in Namibia and other parts of the world. Essentially, fat cakes are just deep-fried dough balls that can be made into sweet or savory dishes. So, it's no wonder they're popular!

Geography and environment

Red desert dunes, rugged bushveld, dense woodlands, and plains of gravel make up Namibia's ancient terrain. Home to the monumental Fish River Canyon and sharing the iconic Kalahari Desert with   South Africa   and   Botswana , Namibia has some of the most interesting landscapes in   Africa , if not the world.

With little arable land and a warm climate, Namibia is prone to prolonged periods of drought, making farming difficult. Bordered by Angola, Botswana, South Africa, and   Zambia , Namibia also has a stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean where visitors can see where the desert meets the sea.

Top 10 places to visit in Namibia

1. fish river canyon.

There's more to the Fish River Canyon than its sheer size. With remote hiking trails, magnificent view points and raging river torrents during the rainy season, visitors will be breathless at the epic views and sense of isolation when visiting this canyon, believed to have been formed more than 500 million years ago.

2. Damaraland

The timeworn terrain of Damaraland makes for interesting, otherworldly landscapes to travel through. The combination of strange rock formations, parched valleys, ochre boulders and amber sunsets makes for magic memories.

3. Sossusvlei sands

This huge clay pan wrapped in red sand dunes occupies a large part of southern Namibia. With some of the tallest dunes in the world, Sossusvlei's variety of color, size and flora make it a glory to behold.

4. Cape Cross

This protected area on the cape of the southern Atlantic is most famous for its resident seal colony, one of the largest in the world.

5. Ship to shore

Namibia's Skeleton Coast has been called 'The Land God Made in Anger' by the San Bushmen and 'The Gates of Hell' by the Portuguese, and it's not hard to see why. With gale-force winds battering the shore, rolling surf and thick fog, the Skeleton Coast has ruined many a mariner over the years. Evidence of this is scattered along the coastal sands, with a collection of rusting ships resting on the beaches - an eerie yet enthralling sight.

6. Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park might be one of the best places to see some of Africa’s iconic wildlife. With its artificial watering holes and wide clear spaces, it’s likely you’ll grab some stellar snaps of the hard-to-miss inhabitants, including elephants, zebras and even black rhinos.

7. Zambezi River

The Zambezi River isn’t just the fourth-longest river in Africa; it’s also the hangout spot for some pretty famous animals. Look for hippos, monkeys, elephants, buffalo, birds and more aboard a canoe or cruise.

8. Walvis Bay

Bird lovers should consider a stop at Walvis Bay, which is typically a stop on the way to nearby Swakopmund. Thousands of migratory birds, including the fan-favourite flamingos and portly-pouched pelicans are seen across the lagoons and bird sanctuaries

9. Swakopmund

If, while in Africa, you have a hankering for German architecture, stop by the spookily named Skeleton Coast for a visit to the town of Swakopmund. Wander through the mix of Namibian and German influences of this seaside stop, enjoying the open-air market and fresh sea breeze. You could also find yourself on a dolphin and seal boating adventure to nearby Cape Cross or out on a local fishing excursion.

10. Orange River

Named the Orange River for its unique hue, this waterway has been an important part of Namibian and South African history – namely, the diamond rush in the 1800s. While diamond mining is a continuing business in the region, many people simply come to enjoy paddling the waters

What’s travel without a meaningful souvenir or two? When in Namibia, Intrepid encourages travelers to support local makers who put time and effort into handmaking their wares. Culturally significant items are often available for purchase, especially in tourist areas. Speaking to the local sellers can be a great way to learn about their culture and understand the significance of what they are selling.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Namibia

Many of the beautiful textiles sold around Namibia can be used in a multitude of ways, e.g., for clothing, tableware, art, and more. Look to buy from traditional artists and makers in craft markets to support local talent and local industries.

Wooden crafts

A hand-carved wooden object is a great memento to take home from Namibia. There’s likely a souvenir for everyone with crockery, bowls, animal figures, dolls, instruments, and more. You’ll see traditional African masks for sale, which are often items that have a symbolic meaning to the local people.

Precious gems

As one of the largest producers of diamonds in the world, you’re likely to find a sparkly item or two in Namibia. Be sure to do some research or ask your guide about where to go, as not all shops will have the real deal.

Is tipping customary in Namibia?

While not mandatory, a tip of 10% is considered standard when dining in Namibia. With the typical Namibian earning a modest wage, a small tip to porters, housemaids and other service workers would be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Namibia?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the cyber cafes of Namibia’s large cities, but limited to no access should be expected in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Namibia?

Cell phone coverage is good in Namibia's large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone.

What are the toilets like in Namibia?

Depending on which areas of Namibia you are traveling in, expect to encounter a combination of squat toilets and flushable toilets. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Namibia?

While tap water is considered safe in Namibia's cities, drinking tap water isn't generally recommended in Namibia. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Namibia Etosha National Park Wildlife Safari Drive Elephant Family

A desert runs through it

Namibia certainly has a flair for the dramatic. From vast desert landscapes to the wild Skeleton Coast and the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park, no feature falls short of spectacular. So imposing it gave its name to the entire country, the Namib is the world's oldest desert, with a great sand sea stretching for hundreds of kilometres in every direction, the only desert in Africa inhabited by elephant, rhino, giraffe, and lion. Etosha National Park is dominated by an immense salt pan edged by waterholes, guaranteeing rewarding wildlife viewing. Still not enough? Try the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon, dotted with hot springs and demanding enough to test even the toughest trekker. Home to the largest population of cheetah still in existence, but with fewer than two million people, Namibia is known for its stars, not its nightlife.

Discover Namibia’s iconic destinations

Namibia is the soul of Africa, characterised by vast open spaces, breathtaking scenery and great contrasts – ocean, dunes, mountains and deserts. This vast desert country of rolling dunes and swirling mists stirs the spirit and moves the heart.

Namibia is so large and sparsely populated that it is possible to discover enormous open spaces without roads, towns, trees or even stones, just the lonely desert wind passing through one of the most enchanting corners of the earth.

Africa’s largest game park, the Namib-Naukluft Park, is a must see when on safari in Namibia, with its magnificent sea of rolling red dunes at Sossusvlei.

Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s great parks in both size and diversity of wildlife. In the country’s far north eastern pocket is the captivating and largely unexplored Caprivi Strip.

Namibia Safaris

Guided Tours

Guided tours of namibia, why book a tour, unforgettable holidays.

Guided Namibia Tours are hands down the best way to explore this vast and beautiful desert country. They include everything that you could expect from such a tour, such as luxury accommodation, being driven from one destination to the next in comfort and style, and getting to see all sorts of popular attractions as well as those destinations that are not always visited.

Because the guided tour of Namibia is so all-encompassing, it remains incredibly attractive to those who don’t want to embark on their own driving safari, and at Namibia Safaris, we not only have a wide range of guided Namibia tours, but we also have a reputation for providing our guests with an unforgettable experience.

Why book a Guided Namibia Tour?

There are plenty of benefits to look forward to when you are booking a guided tour of Namibia. If you are sitting on the fence between booking a guided tour and going on a self-drive safari, here are a few points to keep in mind.

  • You’ll be supported

Namibia is a vast and interesting place to visit, but a self-drive Namibia Tour can be quite intimidating. If you are less adventurous or if you are looking for a more peaceful experience, having a guided tour means you don’t have to worry about getting lost or hurt, and having no one around you to help out. Guided tours include not just a helpful guide but also support which is only a phone call away should you need it.

  • You’ll have everything you need

You won’t have to think about where to stay, or where to go. With your guided pre-packaged tour, everything will be planned on your behalf and although meals are not usually included, you will be given suggestions for places you can buy food.

  • You will benefit from the convenience

Although it is certainly a good idea to research all of the places that you can go during your guided Namibia tour , you don’t have to stress about forgetting an important attraction. Guided tours are convenient because the planning aspect of your trip will be fully taken care of.

Epic Destinations, Unforgettable Holidays

Any Namibia holiday is going to be one full of excitement and unforgettable places to see and experience. At Namibia Safaris, we have curated a list of guided safaris and tours that are perfect for first time holiday makers as well as those are returning.

Among our list of tours, we have trips to the Sossusvlei, holidays in Etosha, tours of Swakopmund, drives to the Skeleton Coast, and so much more. Each of our uniquely planned guided Namibia tours are budget friendly and promise to be an experience that you will treasure for the rest of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions about Guided Namibia Tours

  • What is the best time to visit Namibia for a Guided Tour?

Travellers agree that the best time to go on a guided Namibia tour is between the months of July and October, when the weather is just perfect. Travelling during this time of year will allow you to avoid the intense summer heat.

  • How many days do you need for a guided Namibia tour?

How many days do you have? The more time that you can spend in Namibia, the more you get to see and experience. Ideally, you should set aside at least a week or two for your guided trip, but if you can’t do that, try to book at least 3 days.

  • How much does a guided Namibia tour cost?

The costs all depend on the company you are booking your tour with and the type of tour you are planning on going on. For an accurate cost, you should think about contacting various travel companies to find the tour that fits your budget.

  • How do you travel around Namibia?

You can book a guided tour, which means you will be driven around, or you can book a self-drive safari, in which case you will drive yourself. If you intend on going on a self-drive trip, try to book an off-road vehicle, just in case you hit a rough and rugged road.

  • What do I need to know before I go on a Namibia tour?

Namibia a fairly straight forward destination, but here’s a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • 4 wheel drive cars are best.
  • Namibia is quite a safe place to travel to.
  • There are plenty of luxury accommodation options, so you don’t have to rough it.
  • Since Namibia is such a vast destination, you should be prepared to spend quite a lot of time on the road.

Namibia can be expensive.

11 of the best places to visit in Namibia

Namibia is a land of superlatives and contrasts.

It's home to Africa’s largest canyon, its oldest desert and some of its highest dunes. It has a 1,500km (932mi) coastline and a network of languid waterways, yet it is one of Africa’s driest countries. Sun-baked tracts of desert are nourished by fog that rolls in from the icy Atlantic, enabling seemingly empty expanses to support a variety of mega- and microfauna.

Exploring Namibia is a delight, thanks to its good infrastructure and well-developed tourism industry. For a taste of the country's highlights, here are the best places to visit.

Two rhinos standing in grassland

1. Etosha National Park

Best safari destination

Etosha is Namibia’s safari destination, famed for large herds of zebras, wildebeests, impalas and other wildlife that gather around its many water holes during the dry season , as well as the huge flocks of flamingoes that make their way to Etosha pan for breeding during the rainy season. Etosha is also notable for being home to one of Africa’s largest populations of the critically endangered black rhino. One of the best places to spot these is the floodlit water hole at Okakuejo.

Planning tip: Etosha is ideally set up for self-drive exploration , with a well-spaced network of camps and a good road network.

2. Skeleton Coast National Park

Best place for solitude and desolate, raw beauty

Stretching 500km (310mi) along Namibia’s northwestern shoreline is Skeleton Coast National Park , splendid in its desolation with barren, wave-pounded sands that were once littered with the bones of whales, seals and hapless humans.

Permits are required for exploring the park’s northern section, although you can get a good feel for the area in the lower portion between the Ugab River entrance and the fishing outpost of Terrace Bay. The exception to this is the December–January high season, when it is a favored destination for anglers.

3. Swakopmund

Best spot for adrenaline activities

Dune boarding, skydiving and surfing are just some of the many activities that are possible in Namibia’s adventure capital of Swakopmund . With its chill vibe, German-influenced architecture, array of adventure sport operators and good range of restaurants and accommodations, the town has become a favorite stop on the Namibian travel circuit.

Just 35km south is Walvis Bay , known for its flamingoes and wetlands, and the nearby 383m-high (1,256ft) Dune 7, Namibia’s highest. Further along, don’t miss Sandwich Harbour  with its bird-filled lagoon dramatically set against a backdrop of towering sand dunes.

Distances between attractions along the central coast aren’t too prohibitive. Even if you have time for just a week here, you’ll be able to get a good introduction to many of Namibia’s highlights.

Detour: Don’t miss at least a day excursion from Swakopmund north to Cape Cross seal reserve , where you can see, hear and smell thousands of Cape Fur seals as they lounge on the beach and frolic in the waves.

4. Damaraland

Best region for desert-adapted wildlife

Damaraland , nestled between Etosha National Park and the coast, is a hauntingly beautiful region where desert-adapted elephants and lions roam amidst craggy rock formations, along dry riverbeds and past gnarled welwitschia mirabilis. It’s also the site of one of Africa’s most extensive collections of rock art, at Twyfelfontein , with more than 2,500 engravings.

Detour: There’s also a wealth of rock art at Brandberg , or "fire mountain", several hours' drive to the south. Watch the sun set against the red rocks to see how it got its name.

5. Sossusvlei

Best place for photography

In the heart of the Namib Desert is the tiny enclave of Sesriem, gateway to the stunning dune panoramas around Sossusvlei and nearby Deadvlei . These pans are among Namibia’s most iconic sights and a photographer’s paradise with the sharp lines of the surrounding ochre dunes standing in stark contrast to the clear blue skies. Nearby are some lovely desert lodges, and not far away is NamibRand Nature Reserve , a designated dark sky reserve.

Planning tip: Overnighting at Sesriem campsite, inside the main park gate or at one of the lodges inside the park, allows you to get a jump start on your explorations and climb Big Daddy or the nearby Dune 45 while the sun is still relatively low in the sky. For another perspective on this otherworldly landscape, try a sunrise hot-air balloon safari.

6. Lüderitz

Best place for coastal birds and wildlife

Lüderitz , the largest population center in southwestern Namibia, has a completely incongruous setting, sandwiched between sea and desert. Its busy port and single paved-access road contrast with early 20th-century German-style architecture, giving the town a time-warped, end-of-the-road feeling.

About 20km (12.5 miles) west of Lüderitz around the bay is Diaz Point, a rocky, wind-buffeted outcrop known for its seabirds and seals. Southeast of Lüderitz is the old ghost town of Kolmanskop , a mining settlement that is slowly being taken over by the desert.

Detour: Stretching south from Lüderitz are the empty expanses of Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park . This former diamond-mining zone is a biodiversity hot spot with a diverse array of succulents. Day excursions can be organized in Lüderitz. On the park’s eastern edge, near the small town of Aus, watch for survivors of the area’s once-large population of wild horses.

7. Southern Namibia

Best destination for a river adventure

The Orange River, which forms Namibia’s border with South Africa, is all about multi-day canoe adventures where you paddle by day, camp under the stars and spend languid afternoons relaxing on the riverbank. The vineyard-fringed border town of Noordoewer is a popular base.

Combine four or five days on the river with a visit to Fish River Canyon and |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park . A handful of viewpoints let you glimpse the canyon’s massive scale.

Planning tip:  Fancy a challenge? In the cooler months, put on your hiking boots for an unforgettable 85km (53mi) hike through the canyon’s interior, finishing at the relaxing |Ai-|Ais hot springs.

8. Kunene Region (Kaokoland)

Best place for remoteness

In Namibia’s far northwestern corner is the remote and seldom visited Kunene region, with its isolated valleys, empty scrublands, mountains and desert. It is home to the semi-nomadic Himba people, known for their traditional lifestyle and red ochre skin cream. You’ll have many opportunities here to get to know them and learn about their culture.

Kunene is fringed to the north by the sandbanks and waterways of the Kunene River delta. East of here, the winding Kunene River, which forms Namibia’s border with Angola , flows past pretty Epupa Falls and some lovely riverside lodges.

Planning tip: Kunene is high adventure country. Fully equipped 4WD excursions and fly-in tours are the main ways of exploring the region’s remote expanses.

A hippopotamus standing on a riverbank with birds resting on its back looks at the river with flowers floating in the water

9. Zambezi Region (Caprivi Strip)

Best destination for water-based wildlife watching

Northeastern Namibia is miles away from Windhoek and much of the rest of the country, both in distance and in feel, its languid waterways offering a complete contrast to the arid desertscapes more prevalent in the south. Home to Bwabwata National Park , the far northeast is ideal for a detour if you’re combining travel in Namibia with visits to Zambia and Victoria Falls .

Enjoy the night-time symphonies of chirping and river noises and the area’s relaxed lodges and campgrounds while listening to hippos and watching elephants spraying water over themselves along the riverbanks.

10. Northern Namibia

Best place for getting to know local culture

Densely populated northern Namibia is the cultural heartland of the Owambo, Namibia’s largest ethnic group. Learn about local culture around Ondwangwa, visit the moving memorial marking the birthplace of Namibian independence at Omugulugwombashe, hunt up local festivals such as oshituti shomagongo (marula fruit festival) and sample some omagungu (mopane worms) and omboga (greens) at one of the region’s many small eateries.

11. Windhoek

Best place to delve into Namibia’s history

No visit to Namibia is complete without at least a brief stop in the country’s lively capital . Perched atop an inland plateau at about 1,700m (5,577ft), Windhoek is one of the world’s highest capital cities. It is also Namibia’s main urban hub and the best place in the country to buy crafts and to stock up before setting off to explore.

Detour: Surrounding Windhoek between 1,700m (5,577ft) and 2,000m (6,562ft) in altitude are the Khomas Highlands with cloud-free skies, open grasslands and rolling peaks. Check out the local wildlife at tiny Daan Viljoen park on Windhoek’s western edge or Na’ankuse Wildlife Sanctuary to the east.

Etosha (‘Great White Place’) is one of the biggest national parks in Africa and with its diverse wildlife and landscape – from Acacia trees on the wide-open plains to the large salt pan, stretching as far as the eye can see – it is definitely one of the most interesting. Especially in the dry months, the waterholes are great places for seeing herds of elephants, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, oryx, impalas, springboks and with a little bit of luck also lions, rhinos and leopards. Observe the animals and birds as they come to quench their thirst and study their behaviour together with your guide. Before the sun sets, you make your way to the Etosha Village just outside the national park. Get comfortable and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while two eventful safari days come to an end.

Through a spectacular and nearly completely uninhabited landscape, you travel along the river. Your destination for the day is the Omarunga Epupa Falls Camp, only a stone’s throw away from the Epupa Falls. Here, against a breath-taking backdrop, the Kunene River cascades down into a 60-meter-deep gorge – a spectacular sight to behold. Once you are at the camp you have time to relax and enjoy your surroundings. If you would like to stretch your legs, you can always go for a stroll to the Epupa Falls. In the late afternoon, your guide takes you to a nearby viewpoint, where you can enjoy the picturesque sunset and scenic landscape dotted with Makalani palms and Baobab trees. You stay the night at Omarunga Epupa Falls Camp

Himba village close to Omarunga Lodge on Northern Namibia tour

Day 9 | Epupa Falls

In the morning, you will visit a Himba village, where you will not only learn more about the culture and traditions of these proud people, but also get an insight into their everyday lives. Most striking is the intense red colour of the women’s bodies. By using a paste of butter fat, ochre powder and wood ash, they dye their hair and protect their skin from the sun. You also cannot help but to admire their intricately braided hair and their gorgeous jewellery, made from iron, copper and shells. In the afternoon, you will join a walk along the Kunene River accompanied by a Himba guide. He will explain the different vegetation found in the region and you might even see a crocodile lounging in the sun. After about 2-3 hours you will head back to the Omarunga Epupa Falls Camp.

A well-deserved shower awaits you back at the lodge to wash away the dust of the day. You stay another night at Fort Sesfontein Lodge.

You also have the chance to more closely inspect the Welwitschia plants, which grow here in abundance. Driving through Khorixas you finally reach the Vingerklip Lodge. Sit back and enjoy the last rays of sunshine as your eyes glide over the picturesque valley with its flat top hills, known as the Ugab Terraces. You have your evening meal and overnight stay at the Vingerklip Lodge.

Moon rises near Vingerklip

Day 13 | Vingerklip – Greater Windhoek

Distance approx. 400 km; driving time approx. 5 hours

Vingerklip – Greater Windhoek

If you have not yet had the opportunity, you visit the Vingerklip together with your guide in the morning. This remarkable 35-meter-high rock needle resembles a finger, hence the name ‘Finger Rock’. Hiking trails take you up to the Vingerklip, offering great photo opportunities of the valley below. You then continue to Okahandja. Take some time to browse through the well-known souvenir market, where you can find wood carvings, textiles and jewellery to name but a few. You then finally reach the charming Immanuel Wilderness Lodge close to Windhoek. Take your time to sit back and reflect on everything you have seen and experienced over the past days.

Straight road leading to Windhoek

You Won’t Want to Miss August’s Rare Super Blue Moon. Here’s How and When You Can See It

O n the heels of  the exciting Perseid meteor shower, the public will be graced with another thrilling night sky moment.

On Monday evening, you’ll have more of a reason than usual to gaze up at the sky, as August’s rare super blue moon will take center stage for the pleasure of photographers, astronomers, and casual viewers.

Here's what to know about the celestial event:

What is a super blue moon?

A super blue moon is simultaneously a full moon, blue moon, and a super moon.

The first of these three is pretty well known to us: a phase in the lunar cycle in which the Earth, sun, and moon are aligned with the Earth in the middle, so the moon is fully illuminated on Earth.

A blue moon is not about the color of the moon, but instead the frequency of the full moon. There are two definitions of a blue moon—the first describes when there are two full moons in a single month. Since the moon’s cycle is 29.5 days, and our average calendar month is 30-31 days, it is incredibly rare to have two full moons in one single month, but it is possible, happening every two to three years, according to NASA. Around 3% of full moons are blue moons.

There are also seasonal blue moons, in which a calendar season contains four full moons instead of the usual three, and the blue moon is the third of the four full moons. August’s full moon is of this variety. The next seasonal blue moon is expected in May 2027.

The super moon part refers to the moon's orbit, which brings it slightly closer to Earth this month, making it appear bigger and brighter. This occurs since the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical instead of just a circle, and thus there are times when the moon is further and closer to our planet.

During the moon’s closest approach to Earth, it can appear approximately 14% larger and shine 30% brighter than when at its farthest point in the orbit. This will be the first of four consecutive super moons this year, and it is less rare than the blue moon, occurring three or four times a year.

August’s full moon is often called the Sturgeon moon , dubbed by the Algonquin Native American tribe living in the Great Lakes area and throughout what is now known as the northeastern United States. They named the full moon after sturgeons—a type of large fish—which were most plentiful in the lakes during the month of August.

How and when can you see August’s super blue moon?

The full moon's peak will occur on Monday afternoon, according to NASA , at 2:26 p.m. EDT and 11:26 a.m. PT. It will appear for three days, from Sunday morning until early Wednesday morning.

Though the moon will be visible to the naked eye, Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., says that telescope and binocular viewers will be able to see even more detail on the lunar surface than usual.

How rare is a super blue moon?

According to NASA, the combination of the super moon and the blue moon is rare, and the time between their occurrences is quite “irregular” and could be as much as 20 years, with 10 years between the average.

Though we had a super blue moon somewhat recently, in August 2023, NASA predicts the next super blue moons will occur in January and March 2037. All the more reason to make sure you don’t miss 2024’s offering.
