Safaris From Nairobi - Compare 2,174 Tours
Nairobi is the starting point of just about every Kenya safari, and the possibilities of where you can go from Kenya’s capital are rich and varied. Roads fan out across the country from Nairobi, while both the main international airport and smaller Wilson Airport have a range of flights to towns and remote airstrips in national parks, reserves and conservancies nationwide. Remember that Kenya is the birthplace of the East African safari, and choosing which parks to visit and matching these to the animals you most wish to see requires careful planning. And it will absolutely be worth it.

5 Questions About Safaris From Nairobi
Answered by
Anthony ham.
Where can I go on a safari from Nairobi?
“You can go anywhere in Kenya on safari from Nairobi. That’s because the capital is where most people arrive in the country, and most parks or reserves are an easy drive (or a much shorter flight) from here. Best of all, Nairobi is one of few cities in Africa that has a world-class wildlife park (Nairobi National Park) in the city’s outer suburbs. Make sure you visit the park before heading out to the other parks that are farther away. The most popular safari destinations from Nairobi are the Masai Mara National Reserve to the west, Lake Nakuru National Park to the northwest and Amboseli National Park in the southeast. If you’re visiting Amboseli, then Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks are not far away. Close to Lake Nakuru you’ll find the other Rift Valley lakes, such as Lake Naivasha. Out west, the Masai Mara is surrounded by community conservancies that are also outstanding places to go on safari. If you’re willing to travel a little farther, in the north there’s Samburu National Reserve.”
How much time do I need for a Kenya trip from Nairobi?
“How you answer this question will depend on how much time you have to spare and how much money you have to spend. That’s because you could easily spend a month or two on safari in Kenya and still not see everything. Count on spending at least 1 day in and around Nairobi, although Kenya’s capital really does deserve at least a couple of days. If you decide to visit Amboseli or Lake Nakuru National Parks, 2 days for each is really a minimum. For Amboseli, add a couple of extra days each for Tsavo West and Tsavo East. For the Masai Mara, plan on a minimum of 3 days, but ideally you should dedicate more time here. And remember, when calculating the length of your safari you’ll need to allow for the time you spend traveling to and from each destination. Many travelers also combine time spent on safari with a beach holiday, so you might wish to factor that in too, if that’s a priority.”
Can I see the Big Five animals on a trip from Nairobi?
“Seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) is certainly possible on a safari from Nairobi. One of the best places to see the Big Five is Ol Pejeta Conservancy, up on the Laikipia Plateau and within a half-day’s journey from Nairobi. Often it is the rhino that is most difficult of the Big Five to see. Apart from the Laikipia Plateau (Ol Pejeta, Lewa or Borana Conservancies, for example), the easiest places to see rhinos are Nairobi National Park or Lake Nakuru National Park. Both of these parks have four of the Big Five; neither has elephants. If you were to combine one or more of these parks with the Masai Mara, Amboseli or one of the Tsavos, then you would have a good chance of seeing the five species (in addition to so many other animals).”
Should I go for a road or fly-in safari from Nairobi?
“The major factors when considering whether to make your trip a road or fly-in safari are time and money. Flying has a number of advantages. One is that it will get you where you want to go so much more quickly, maximizing the amount of time you get to spend in the parks themselves (as opposed to traveling between the parks). Many of Kenya’s major roads are clogged with traffic and none too beautiful, so you won’t be missing much if you fly. And you have the added benefit of enjoying remarkable views on your way to wherever it is that you’re going. It may take longer but traveling by road will be much more affordable for many travelers. That’s because flying doesn’t come cheap. If you travel by road, you also get to see more of the country up close, which is a great way to meet locals (something which is less likely if you travel by air).”
How much will this safari cost?
“It depends on the possible tours and packages on offer, but there is endless variety when it comes to the price of a safari from Nairobi. The cheapest safari could cost US$100 per person per day for a budget camping safari, and it could rise to 10 times that for a high-end luxury safari trip. Factors to take into account when considering potential costs are whether you travel in high or low season; which kind of accommodation you choose; whether you travel on a private or a cheaper group safari; how long you plan to be on safari; and whether your safari includes any flights. When you receive a quote from a tour operator, always make sure that you understand what’s included. Most quotes should include park entry fees, transfers, meals, some drinks, accommodation (including camping equipment, where needed), vehicle, driver, game drives and a guide.”

3 Important Tips For Booking A Safari In East Africa
Booking a safari tour can be pretty daunting, especially if it’s your first time visiting East Africa. I learnt a lot along the way, so I thought I’d share the 3 most important things you need to know before you book your trip!
1. Booking a Safari in East Africa
Going on safari is expensive! I mean, it’s not exactly the same as paying 20 quid to get into London Zoo, so my biggest tip would be to never book with a travel agent in the UK.
I obtained a handful of quotes from Kenya based travel agents to compare to those I’d contacted at home. With the same dates and criteria; two nights at Ashnil Mara Camp in Maasai Mara, with a driver from Nairobi and back and 4 private game drives for two people.
The cheapest quote I had from a popular travel agent in London that specialises in East African safaris was just over £2000 for two people. On the other hand, I booked our trip with Mario Tours for just over £700 which is almost a third of the price I’d have paid in London!

Side note – I highly recommend Mario Tours . Their service was brilliant and booking a driver with them meant that we had a private safari and didn’t have to share the Landcruiser with other passengers. Our driver, Ronnie was extremely knowledgable about the Mara & great company for 3 days and so we even booked our Mombasa hotel package with them too. Definitely contact them if you’re planning a trip to Kenya.
2. The Safari Packing List Myth
I read countless ‘safari packing lists’ online before our trip. All of them told me that I can only wear certain colours so that I don’t startle the animals, or so that I can blend in with the surroundings.
Firstly, you don’t get out of the car at Maasai Mara so you’re not going to stroll past a lion while hoping he doesn’t charge at you. Secondly, the animals don’t care about your fashion choices!
Every local I mentioned this so called packing list to, laughed at me and told me they’d never heard of such a thing. These are all people that live in Africa and go on safari as often as I’d go on a day trip to Manchester (about once a year!).
In reality, people were wearing all sorts of bold prints and bright colours. The only extras I’d advise packing is a jumper of some description in case you need it for an early morning game drive, a pair of leggings for the same reason (and because they hardly take up any room) and a scarf to protect your face from the flies if it’s been raining the night before. Trust me, you will know when you need it – you’ll be covered head to toe with those pesky flies! Bleugh.
A couple of sports bras will be invaluable, particularly if you have a large bust. The roads in Kenya; both at Maasai Mara and elsewhere are incredibly bumpy with huge potholes and you’ll be grateful for the extra support. You can thank me later!
3. Other Safari spots
Maasai Mara isn’t the only safari destination in Kenya. There are loads of different safari parks to choose from..
The top parks I recommend visiting are…
- Amboseli National Park – For elephant spotting and a Mount Kilimanjiro backdrop
- Lake Nakuru – To see more than a million pink flamingoes flock on the shores
- Tsavo East National Park – The the epitome of wilderness with it’s rocky hills, natural springs, swamps, dormant volcanic cones and a lava bed
- Nairobi National Park – Walking safaris
- Hell’s Gate – Cycling safaris add a twist in this geothermal landscape.
- Lake Naivasha – Sunset cruises alongside the hippos are idyllic here
- Samburu Game Reserve – An oasis amid a lava field where you can see Samburu’s own ‘Special Five’: the Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and Reticulated giraffe

5 Days Masai Mara and Amboseli Wildlife Safari
Our 5 day Kenya Masai Mara safari was fantastic. Everything was very good. Martin our driver guide, extremely hard-working, knowledgeable and helpful. From airport reception to on time performance all very good. Good company I can recommend.

Everything was Amazing
Kenya Camping Safari
My first time camping and I had a blast! David was a fantastic CEO: helpful, patient, informative and good natured. The people, places and animals I’ve seen will stay will me for a long time.
Masai Mara Camping Safari
Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.
Kenya Family Safari
Your staff did an excellent job. We had a great time and I would recommend this trip for my friends.

The porters are super friendly and the chef made some amazing meals I didn’t expect to get on the mountain. The route was spectacular from start to finish, the last lodge was a an amazing place to finish off the trip.
7 Days Kenya mid range Joining Safari
CKC Safari is outstanding from first contact through to saying farewell at the end. Efficient, professional and nothing to much trouble to ensure a wonderful experience.
6 Day Kenya Cultural Safari
After seeing the Best Ever Food Tour visit at the Maasai Mara village in Amboseli, I was inspired to go! I contacted Emmanuel and he was instantly a wealth of knowledge. We communicated often about my trip so much that by the time we met, I felt as if I were amongst friends. Along with Emmanuel was Carlos Roy, our driver. Carlos and Emmanuel were incredibly knowledgeable about the Maasai people, the area and could answer all of my questions. Carlos is by far the best driver. He is considerate and has a great sense of humor. You definitely won't be bored as he introduces you to the "African massage"! On the tour, Emmanuel was able to translate my questions, arrange a time for me to personally interview the elder and much more! This tour was hands down one of my favorite experiences during my entire trip. I've been to another Maasai village and this by far was the most authentic. I felt as if I was truly able to experience the culture as well as gain an appreciation for their desire to keep up with today's technology while preserving their traditions and norms. I'm so glad I did this tour with Emmanuel and Carolos. I am a travel advisor and my goal is to send my clients seeking an authentic experience to tour with Emmanuel and Carlos in the future. My one piece of advice would be not to wait, book today because this is a really popular tour!!!
5 Day Kenya Flying Safari

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa
I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

Budget Luxury Masai Mara Safari in Kenya (in A Private JEEP with A FREE NIGHT at Nairobi Hotel)
We booked the 3-Day Masai Mara safari package that was the most popular among TourRadar. The single thing we enjoyed most was the quality service. Bon Voyage Kenya Safaris offers varied in terms of the additional/extra activities at Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha boat ride. Good Food at Enkorok Mara Camp and a ride in only 6-passager group jeep. The Jeep was new with a lovely driver, Mr. Steve who showed us the wildlife. There’s no doubt that you’ll find this company one of the best safari companies in Kenya.
