A traditional Grande Champagne VSOP which is allowed to age much longer than the legal minimum of 4,5 years in its Limousin oak barrels forms the base for this renowned cognac. It is blended with much older cognacs to receive the quality level required of a KELT cognac. Once the blending is completed we embark on the Tour du Monde. This is the legendary 3 month Ocean Maturation exclusive to KELT which brings out hidden qualities in the Limousin oak and rounds off the cognac in a beautiful and unique way making the KELT cognac the smoothest on the market while presenting a remarkably broad pallet of tastes and aromas. Dark golden yellow, amber. Grande Champagne style, very rare. Mellow, warm, well balanced, great structure. Long finish – at least 10 minutes on the palate.

Credits, Gift Certificates and Invitations

• We may, from time to time, offer a credit for new-member referrals (“New Member Credits”). New Member Credits, if any, will be issued by Craftshack and not our Vendors. New Member Credits may only be earned after new members that have been invited by a current member make at least one completed and shipped purchase in the amount of $35 or more within the first 30 days upon receipt of their invitation. New Member Credits carry no cash value and can only be used for purchases on the Site. New Member Credits expire one month from the date of issue and are non-transferrable. New Member Credits granted by any other means other than as a result of the initial, completed and shipped purchase by a new member introduced to Craftshack for the first time by a referring member are in violation of these Terms and Conditions. • In addition to New Member Credits, we may issue or offer credits for returns and gift certificates. • claims that may arise after the termination of these Terms and Conditions.

You agree that you and Craftshack are each waiving the right to trial by jury or to participate in a class action. You and Craftshack agree that each may bring claims against the other only in your or its individual capacity, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any purported class or representative proceeding. Further, you and Craftshack agree that an arbitrator may not consolidate more than one person’s claims and may not otherwise preside over any form of a representative or class proceeding. These Terms and Conditions evidence a transaction in interstate commerce, and thus, the Federal Arbitration Act governs the interpretation and enforcement of this provision. This arbitration provision shall survive termination of these Terms and Conditions.

• You and Craftshack each agree to submit to the personal and exclusive jurisdiction of an impartial arbiter located within the State of Delaware. Notwithstanding any other provision herein, you agree that Craftshack shall still be allowed to apply for injunctive remedies (or the equivalent type of urgent legal relief) in any jurisdiction.
• The failure of Craftshack to exercise or enforce any right or provision of the Terms and Conditions shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. If any provision of the Terms and Conditions is found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, the parties nevertheless agree that the court should endeavor to give effect to the parties’ intentions as reflected in the provision, and the other provisions of the Terms and Conditions remain in full force and effect. The combination of movement, temperature variations, airpressure changes and the magic of the seas during this 90 day sea voyage, creates a seamless perfection in the blend as well as an unrivalled smoothness that is characteristic of the Kelt cognacs.

Kelt Tour du Monde Rare VSOP Cognac

First, let’s talk about brandy vs. cognac. Brandy is a liquor distilled from wine and aged in wood. (Brandy can be made from fruits other than grapes as well, but that’s a story for another time.) Cognac is brandy that specifically comes from the town of Cognac and the delimited surrounding areas in western France. (The one which has the most favorable soil and geographical conditions is Grande Champagne.) So, all cognacs are brandy, but not all brandies are cognac. For more detail on cognac, click here .

Until the early 1900s cognac was shipped in barrels. The long sea voyages had a profound effect on the quality of the cognac. When cognac started to be shipped in bottles, many felt something had been was lost. Hoping to recapture that quality, Estonian-born Swedish entrepreneur Olev Keltes established the Kelt Cognac company in 1988. He began his career with the study of the distillation of cognacs as well as madeira, rum, and aquavit. It was this study that led him to rediscover the lost secret that quality improved in spirits that were aged in barrels on a long trip at sea . It is this maturation at sea that sets Kelt apart from other cognac houses.

Kelt continued to expand on this idea, and sent his cognac on its first sea voyage in 1990. The cognac world looked on, many with skeptical eyes. After the voyage, a tasting session was arranged with some of the top names in the cognac industry, and it was with some surprise that the experiment was hailed a great success.

Subsequently, an optimum route around the world was established, and one which all Kelt cognac now follows. The aim of this travel around the world (tour du monde) is to produce cognacs similar to those of the past, where many cognacs and eaux-de-vie were subjected to this epic oceanic journey.

As I’ve mentioned, wood aging is a requirement of all brandies. There are many oak-producing areas around the world which are used for barrel production. The French areas are: Argonne, Vosges, Nevers, Tronçais, Allier, Bourgogne, Armagnac (Landes) and Limousin. Kelt uses principally Limousin oak barrels for ageing. Prior to being loaded aboard ship, the barrels are only filled to just under three-quarters full so that the liquid can slosh around and has a large enough surface for the ideal amount of alcohol to evaporate (between 1 and 2-1/2% per year). The voyage takes from 90 to 110 days, depending on the weather.

During the world tour, the cognac is in contact with wood repeatedly as the cognac is washed around in the barrels. In addition, the temperature rises, especially when passing through warmer climates, which is for most of the voyage. Finally, at sea the air pressure changes constantly. This makes the Limousin oak contract and expand, adding new oxygen and persuading the Limousin oak to part with its most delicate qualities. It is this combination of movement, temperature, and air pressure that Kelt believes makes their cognacs unique.

Once the cognacs return, they are rested for about three to five months before being transferred to bottles.

The company, while sticking rigidly to the production methods of the 18th and 19th century, uses every modern technology possible to promote their cognacs,  and relies heavily on the maritime theme in their marketing efforts.

I don’t know how “rare” this selection is, but I do know it is my favorite brandy, even over the next step up, Kelt Commodore .  I suppose in an effort to keep this cognac more affordable (even though it still ain’t cheap), it no longer comes in a box, or with the fancy wire mesh neck wrap and tag listing the shipping itinerary.

This tipple is made of 100% Ugni Blanc grapes, all from Grand Champagne. It undergoes 4 to 12 years of maturation, 8 years on average.  It is a golden amber color, rather lighter than most VSOPs, but don’t let that fool you.  The surprisingly delicate nose features notes of green apple vanilla, and a hint of orange zest.  These are joined on the exceptionally balanced palate with some leather, a whisper of fig, and a very smooth mouthfeel.  Nice long finish abetted by good viscosity.

Kelt Cognac

Produced purely from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne, Cognac Kelt is all about the traditions of old. To the extent where every oak barrel of Kelt eaux-de-vie is sent on a three month sea journey around the world – known as the Tour du Monde “ocean maturation”. History of cognac kelt.

Cognac Kelt, whilst being a relatively young cognac house, has links that hail back over the centuries. The Kelt family are from Scandinavia, and Mr Kelt spent a long time studying the distillation of cognacs as well as Madeira, Rum and Aquavit of his native Norway. It was this study that taught him that the quality improved in spirits that were aging in barrels on a long sea voyage.

So the company began to experiment and had a special container produced for the first sea voyage in 1990. The cognac world looked on, many with cynical eyes. After the voyage, a tasting session was arranged with some of the top names in the cognac industry, and it was with some surprise that the experiment was hailed a great success.

And so an optimum route around the world was established, and one which all Kelt cognac now follows. For a reasons not yet understood, a westerly circumnavigation does not reap the same benefits as an easterly one, so all ships get sent westwards. The voyage takes between 90-110 days dependent on the weather. When the cognacs return, they are rested for around three to five months before being transferred to bottles.

All of Kelt’s cognac products today travel around the world on their sea voyage before being bottled. The aim is to produce cognacs similar to those of the past, where many cognacs and eaux-de-vie were subjected to this epic oceanic journey. It’s even possible to track the location of current shipments via Kelt’s website.

Today the company has a worldwide distribution network. This covers China, Russia, Japan, Germany, Italy, the USA, Taiwan, Switzerland and Estonia. The company, whilst using every modern technology possible to promote their cognacs, sticks rigidly to the production methods of the 18th and 19th century, and relies heavily on the maritime theme in their marketing efforts.

Kelt’s “Tour de Monde VSOP Grande Champagne Cognac” was highest rated in the World Spirit Championship, and the “Tour de Monde XO Grande Champagne Cognac” is the only XO to have ever been awarded the platinum medal in the World Spirits Championship 1995.

Kelt also produce limited edition cognacs such as the Kelt Christopher Columbus and Kelt Les Quatre Vents.

Prices for Kelt cognacs range from around US$45 for their VSOP up to prices in the thousands for the rarer bottles.

All shipments require a signature from an adult twenty-one (21) years of age or older per federal law. Couriers will require a proof of ID before delivery. If an adult is unavailable to sign for the package, it may be returned. No exception can be made.

Orders are processed and shipped from the LoveScotch facility Monday through Friday. Please allow up to three (3) business days to process shipping orders.

Orders shipping via the Saver rate (where available) take approximately 5-7 days to have local carrier tracking assigned. Once tracking is assigned, your order should be delivered within 5-7 business days. We are unable to guarantee a specific delivery date. The carrier will attempt delivery three times before it is returned to sender. If an additional delivery attempt is need, an additional delivery fee will be required.

Ground shipping times are best estimates, but are not guaranteed by the shipping couriers.

Orders that are refused or returned after three (3) delivery attempts shall be refunded for the value of the product only. Shipping charges are not refundable and returned orders incur a secondary shipping charge to cover the return shipping fee.

Wine and other delicate products may be weather sensitive. Shipment of these items may be delayed at the LoveScotch team's discretion to prevent heat damage or freezing. LoveScotch is not responsible for damaged wines due to ground services.

LoveScotch is unable to ship to P.O. Boxes, Army Post Offices (APO), Fleet Post Offices (FPO), or freight forwarding companies.

LoveScotch does not guarantee that bottles are shipped in their original packaging. If original packaging is desired, a note must be included in the order. LoveScotch will not ship packaging that was not requested free-of-charge but will for a secondary shipping fee.

Due to state regulations, LoveScotch is only able to accept alcohol returns in the event that the product is spoiled. In the event that the bottle sustains major damage during transit, Lovescotch will refund or replace the product.
