How To Draw A Cruise Ship | in 8 Easy Steps

' src=

Here’s how to ace the perfect drawing of a realistic cruise ship using eight simple steps! This engaging tutorial will not only teach you how to sketch this robust vessel, but also how to enhance it with the use of background elements and color.

A cruise ship is a large boat used to transport passengers on various kinds of journeys. Cruises are meant to be relaxing, scenic and fun for all guests.

This is probably why most of these ships often feature ameneties including pools, parks, dining lounges and sometimes even concert halls. That’s a pretty good indicator of how big these oceanic vehicles can get.

What you will need

  • A4 sheet of paper
  • Pencils (HB, 2h and 3b)
  • A ruler (optional)
  • Coloring kit
  • 30-35 minutes

how to Draw a Cruise Ship

I recommend studying the outline before you begin drawing. This is a great way to get yourself familiar with each step beforehand! Also, make sure you have all of the required drawing tools with you. Because this drawing is fundamentally a combination of shapes put together, a ruler and eraser will definitely be needed!

How to draw a cruise ship

Step 1: Draw the cruise ship body

Start by flipping your paper in a landscape orientation to gain more drawing room. Tackle the cruise ship’s body first, seeing as you will be adding all of the other components onto it later on.

Draw an inverted trapezoid in the middle of your paper. To achieve this shape, you’re going to have to draw a horizontal line at the base of the paper first. Then, draw two diagonal lines from each end of the horizontal line. These lines should be slanted outward, and the line on the left should be longer than the right.

Finally, draw a horizontal line on the upper side to close the structure. As the slanted lines are of unequal lengths, there will be a slope in the middle of the upper line, as shown in the image below.

  • Flip your drawing paper in a landscape orientation to ensure more space
  • Draw an inverted trapezoid in the center of your drawing paper
  • Make sure your shape matches the one in the image below

Step 2: Draw Two decks

The decks are the upper part of the ship that’s usually seen above water. This is where passengers go out to get some fresh air, take in the oceanic views, and make use of the amenities.

To complete this step, draw a long horizontal rectangle on top of the ship’s body for the first deck. Because we’re adding two, draw another rectangle above it. Ensure the upper one is smaller and has diagonal sides, and you’re good to go!

  • Draw a long horizontal rectangle on top of the ship’s body for the first deck
  • Add the second deck by drawing a smaller rectangle above the first one
  • Ensure the smaller deck has diagonal lines on the sides

Step 3: Draw two smoke stacks and wind tower

Draw two wide vertical rectangles next to each other on top of the right side’s upper deck. The length of both of these rectangles should be the same to execute a sleek design. Add a little horizontal rectangle on top of each smoke stack to cap it off and make it look a bit more realistic.

Lastly, draw a thin vertical rectangle on top of the left side of the upper deck to represent the wind tower. You want to make sure the length of the wind tower is longer than the two smoke stacks, as this is how it often appears on real-life ships.

  • Draw two rectangles on the right side of the upper deck for the smoke stacks
  • Draw a vertical rectangle on the left side of the upper deck for the wind tower
  • Ensure the wind tower is longer than the smoke stacks for a realistic look

Step 4: Draw windows on the Two decks

The decks usually have several rooms on them to provide passengers with scenic views of the ocean, so they’re a great addition to consider for your cruise ship sketch!

To add the windows, draw a series of small rectangles within the width of both decks. Draw nine small rectangles that are all the same size and aligned on the same spot on the bottom deck.

Then, draw six small rectangles on the upper deck that are relatively the same size as the ones added to the bottom deck. For this deck though, draw three rectangles next to each other on the left, and three next to each other on the right.

  • Draw nine small rectangles on the bottom deck for the bottom windows
  • Draw six small rectangles on the upper deck for the top windows
  • Make sure the top windows have three on one side and three on the other

How to draw windows on the Two decks of a cruise ship

Step 5: Draw the railings on the main body

To add this cool safety feature, draw two horizontal lines parallel to the upper line of the main body. Then, draw several vertical lines connecting these parallel lines to the main body of the cruise ship. There should be a short gap between the vertical lines for a neat design.

  • Draw two horizontal lines above the upper line of the main body
  • Add a series of short vertical lines between the main body and horizontal lines
  • Ensure there’s a small space between each vertical line for a neat design

Step 6: Draw the main body windows

The decks are not the only part of a cruise ship that contain rooms. Seeing as cruise ships often transport thousands of passengers at a time, there are also rooms below deck, and these rooms require windows, as well.

So for this step, draw a total of nine small circles along the center of the main body. To avoid making them too clustered, separate the circles in a pair of three . Draw three circles next to each other on the left, three in the middle, and three on the right, and you’re good to go!

  • Draw a total of nine small circles on the center of the main body
  • Separate the circles in a pairing of three to avoid overcrowding the space
  • Draw three on the left, three on the center and three on the right

Congratulations! Your Cruise ship Drawing is complete

If you followed along and completed all of the steps in one go, well done! Use this time to give your drawing hand a well-deserved break as you evaluate the outcome of your sketch.

Compare your drawing with the image below and make any necessary adjustments. It’s best to get this out of the way now so you can devote all of your attention to the remaining steps. You surely don’t wanna miss out on those!

How to draw a cruise ship

Taking your cruise ship drawing to the next level

As you are probably already aware, cruise ships don’t fly in the air or run on the streets as other vehicles do. They float on sea.

Right now, there’s not really much perspective in your drawing. The viewer may not easily realize that it’s a cruise ship since the surrounding doesn’t really give off that vibe. For that reason, you need to upgrade your drawing and add more details to it.

Step 7: Adding a background

Draw multiple waves under the ship’s body to pull off the oceanic scenery. To do this, first draw a large wavy shape surrounding the bottom part of the cruise ship. Then, add a few wavy strips within the width of the round shape. These strips are going to transform into waves once they’re colored in.

How to draw a cruise ship

step 8: Adding color

To spice up your drawing, add some vibrant colors to improve the appeal and realism of it. This will definitely give your drawing a lively look. Use a combination of your favorite colors to differentiate between each element on the ship.

We used dark blue to color the ship’s body in our drawing. Red color for the smokestacks and wind tower. Black color for the railings and a light blue color for the windows. You can use similar colors in your drawing or customize it according to your taste . Just make sure to color the drawing in a tidy manner.

How to draw a cruise ship

You can add a flag at the top of the second deck for a nice personalized touch.

Feel free to create a name for your ship and then add it somewhere along the bottom of the cruise ship.

To give your drawing even more context, add a sun and a few birds above your ship to depict the time of day. If you’re going for a night time scene, draw a moon and a few stars surrounding the ship.

Interact with other artists on YouTube to share your experience drawing a cruise ship and possibly gain some extra tips.

Conclusion

This guide explains how to draw a cruise in eight simple steps. First, we drew the cruise ship body. Then we made two decks, two smokestacks, and the wind tower. After that, we drew the windows on the two decks and the railings on the main body. Finally, we upgraded the drawing.

All these steps are quite simple. We’re confident your drawing will be amazing if you follow these steps. You might have to keep practicing for a better result, so go for it again if you think your drawing doesn’t look that good. Ultimately, you’ll have a beautiful cruise ship in no time!

Drawing a ship can be really fun. You can recreate your favorite battleships and put them into war, or you can re-enact the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic! Whatever the choice, ships are always great subjects to sketch. Let's begin!

To draw a classic ship, first draw the hull of the ship, which should be curved on the bottom and flat on top. Then, add several triangles on top of the ship for the masts before drawing the sails. For the next step, you'll want to include the details of the ship, like windows, flags, and the anchor. Next, erase all unnecessary lines and color in your ship. How to Draw a Cruise Ship

Imagine yourself sailing the open seas on a luxurious cruise ship, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views. It’s the perfect way to relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But what if you could bring that same feeling of serenity to your own home? With a little bit of time and effort, you can learn how to draw a cruise ship of your own.

In this article, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to draw a cruise ship. We’ll start with the basic shapes and then move on to adding details like the windows, railings, and masts. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to create your own beautiful cruise ship drawing that you can be proud of.

So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

| Step | Task | Description | |—|—|—| | 1 | Draw the hull | The hull is the basic shape of the ship. It is a long, rectangular box with a rounded bottom. | | 2 | Add the superstructure | The superstructure is the part of the ship that is above the waterline. It includes the bridge, the decks, and the cabins. | | 3 | Add the details | Add the details, such as the windows, the doors, and the railings. |

A cruise ship is a large passenger ship that sails from one port to another, carrying people on vacation. They are often used for pleasure cruises, but they can also be used for business or educational purposes. Cruise ships come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have a few things in common. They typically have a large number of cabins, restaurants, bars, and other amenities. They also have a pool, a gym, and a casino.

Drawing a cruise ship can be a fun and challenging project. It is a good way to learn about the different parts of a cruise ship and how they work together. It can also be a great way to relax and de-stress.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to draw a simple cruise ship. I will use a pencil and paper, but you can also use other materials, such as colored pencils or markers.

Materials and Tools

  • Tracing paper
  • Colored pencils or markers

1. Draw the hull of the ship. The hull is the main body of the ship. It is shaped like a long, narrow rectangle. Start by drawing a straight line for the bottom of the hull. Then, draw a curved line for the top of the hull. The curve should be wider at the front of the ship and narrower at the back. 2. Add the decks. The decks are the different levels of the ship. They are stacked on top of each other. Start by drawing a horizontal line for the main deck. Then, draw another horizontal line for the next deck. Continue drawing horizontal lines until you have drawn all of the decks. 3. Add the superstructure. The superstructure is the part of the ship that is above the decks. It includes the bridge, the funnels, and the masts. Start by drawing a rectangle for the bridge. Then, draw two triangles for the funnels. Finally, draw a few lines for the masts. 4. Add the details. Add details to the ship, such as windows, doors, and lifeboats. You can also add decorations, such as flags and banners. 5. Color the ship. Color the ship using colored pencils or markers. You can use any colors you like, but it is important to choose colors that are complementary.

Here is a finished drawing of a cruise ship:

Drawing a cruise ship is a fun and challenging project. It is a good way to learn about the different parts of a cruise ship and how they work together. It can also be a great way to relax and de-stress.

If you are interested in learning more about drawing cruise ships, there are many resources available online. You can find tutorials, books, and videos that will teach you how to draw different types of cruise ships. You can also find websites that offer free printable templates of cruise ships.

With a little practice, you will be able to draw beautiful and realistic cruise ships.

Draw a basic outline of the ship

The first step in drawing a cruise ship is to draw a basic outline of the ship. This will help you to establish the overall shape of the ship and to make sure that it is proportional.

To draw the basic outline of the ship, start by drawing a large rectangle. This will represent the hull of the ship. Then, draw a smaller rectangle on top of the large rectangle. This will represent the superstructure of the ship. Finally, draw a series of lines to represent the decks of the ship.

Here are some tips for drawing the basic outline of a cruise ship:

  • Make sure that the proportions of the ship are correct. The hull should be about twice as long as it is wide, and the superstructure should be about one-third the height of the hull.
  • Use light lines when drawing the outline of the ship. This will make it easier to make changes later on.
  • Be patient and take your time. Drawing a cruise ship takes practice, so don’t get discouraged if your first few attempts don’t look perfect.

Here is an example of a basic outline of a cruise ship:

Add details to the hull, superstructure, and deck

Once you have drawn the basic outline of the ship, you can start to add details to the hull, superstructure, and deck.

To add details to the hull, start by drawing the windows and doors. Then, draw the railings and other features. Finally, add some shading to give the hull a three-dimensional appearance.

To add details to the superstructure, start by drawing the masts and funnels. Then, draw the windows and doors. Finally, add some shading to give the superstructure a three-dimensional appearance.

To add details to the deck, start by drawing the chairs, tables, and other furniture. Then, draw the people. Finally, add some shading to give the deck a three-dimensional appearance.

Here are some tips for adding details to the hull, superstructure, and deck of a cruise ship:

  • Use a variety of line weights to create a sense of depth.
  • Use shading to create a three-dimensional effect.
  • Add details such as windows, doors, railings, and furniture to make the ship look realistic.
  • Be patient and take your time. Adding details to a cruise ship takes practice, so don’t get discouraged if your first few attempts don’t look perfect.

Here is an example of a cruise ship with details added:

Passengers bought berths on a 3-year cruise. Months on, the ship is still stuck in Belfast

Northern ireland delayed cruise.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) — Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin gave up life on land to become seaborne nomads on a years-long cruise.

Months later, the couple has yet to spend a night at sea. Their ship, the Odyssey, is stuck in Belfast undergoing repair work that has postponed its scheduled May departure for a 3 ½-year round-the-world voyage.

Bodin said Friday that they have enjoyed their pit stop in the Northern Ireland capital, but “when we’d visited every pub and tried and every fish and chips place and listened to all the places that have Irish music, then we were ready to go elsewhere.”

“We’re ready to set sail, for sure,” added Canen.

Villa Vie Residences’ Odyssey is the latest venture in the tempest-tossed world of continuous cruising.

It offers travelers the chance to buy a cabin and live at sea on a ship circumnavigating the globe. On its maiden voyage, it is scheduled to visit 425 ports in 147 countries on seven continents. Cabins – billed as “villas” — start at $99,999, plus a monthly fee, for the operational life of the vessel, at least 15 years. Passengers can also sign up for segments of the voyage lasting weeks or months.

Marketing material, aimed at adventurous retirees and restless digital nomads, touts “the incredible opportunity to own a home on a floating paradise,” complete with a gym, spa, putting green, entertainment facilities, a business center and an “experiential culinary center.”

But first, the Odyssey has to get out of the dock.

It’s now at Belfast’s Harland & Wolff shipyard, where the doomed RMS Titanic was built more than a century ago.

Villa Vie Residences’ marketing manager Sebastian Stokkendal said the company had been “humbled by the scale of what it takes to reactivate a 30-year-old vessel from a four-year layup.”

He said that after work on the rudder shafts, steel work and engine overhauls, the ship is almost ready to depart.

“We expect a very anticipated successful launch next week where we will head to Bremerhaven, Amsterdam, Lisbon, then across the Atlantic for our Caribbean segment,” he said in an email to The Associated Press.

In the meantime, the company has been paying living expenses for about 200 passengers. They are allowed onto the ship during the day and provided with meals and entertainment, but can’t stay overnight. The cruise line has paid for hotels in Belfast and in other European cities for those who want to explore more of Europe while they wait.

Passenger Holly Hennessey from Florida told the BBC she can’t leave Northern Ireland because of her shipmate – her cat, Captain.

She said that at first “I thought I’d go home, or the ship sent some people to the Canary Islands. And then I found out that because I have my cat with me, I can’t even leave.”

“I want to thank Belfast for being so welcoming to all of us,” she said.

Bodin and Canen – a Swede and an American who met when both lived in Hawaii -- have used the time to travel to Italy, Croatia and Bodin's hometown in Sweden, where they are awaiting news of the Odyssey.

Canen plans to run her Arizona-based auto-glass business from the ship. Bodin, a carpenter, is running a YouTube channel documenting the couple’s temporarily stalled journey.

Built in 1993 and operated under different names by several cruise lines over the years before being becalmed by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the Odyssey was bought by Villa Vie Residences in 2023.

The residential cruising business has proved a troubled one. MS The World, launched in 2002, is currently the only vessel of the type in operation. Another venture, Life at Sea, canceled its planned 3-year voyage late last year after failing to secure a ship.

Canen and Bodin put down a deposit on Life at Sea – they got their money back – and also gambled on Victoria Cruises, another stalled venture from which they are still seeking a refund.

But they are undeterred.

“We might be crazy, stupid, naive or resilient,” Bodin said. “I don’t know, you can put any label on it that you want.”

16 mistakes cruise ship passengers make on disembarkation day

Fran Golden

Editor's Note

You've had a great cruise, and you want to end your vacation on a high note. Then comes the reality of disembarkation day.

Getting off a cruise ship is not the same as checking out of a hotel. You can't just leave the ship when you feel like it.

Small and luxury ships can have flexible, even leisurely, disembarkation plans. However, the final day on most big ships is a madhouse.

The crew needs to get everyone out of their cabins and off the ship quickly so they can prepare for the arrival of the next batch of thousands of passengers. It's a busy work day.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Try not to get too sad about the end of your delightful cruise vacation. Just be prepared for a little chaos, and take these steps to avoid any common disembarkation day mistakes.

Check your bill

The night before disembarkation, a statement of everything you spent on the ship for drinks, specialty restaurants, spa treatments, souvenirs and any other splurges will be placed outside your cabin door.

Mistakes happen, and inevitably there will be long lines at guest services on disembarkation day with people arguing about specific charges.

drawing for cruise ship

Avoid the crowd by either getting there super early or, better, heading to guest services the last night of your cruise and asking for a printout. Carefully check the statement , and ask for any required adjustments. On some ships, you can even do this electronically on the cruise line's app or smart TV.

Pro tip: Don't assume you can fix issues after you get off the ship. It's nearly impossible to get cruise line land staff to fix onboard billing mistakes.

Related: 11 extra charges on cruise ships that will drive you nuts — and what you can do about them

Don't get up at the crack of dawn

Your ship might arrive back in port at 6 a.m., but it then has to be cleared by customs officials, which might take two hours or more. Grab an extra hour or two of sleep — unless you still need to check your bill that morning. (See above.)

Avoid early flights home

There is a reason cruise lines recommend guests not book flights home before noon. It takes several hours to clear a ship of thousands of passengers. You might also have to clear customs.

Then you have to get to the airport, which could involve navigating through heavy traffic and waiting in security lines along with hundreds of other cruise travelers fresh off their ships.

Avoid unnecessary heart palpitations by booking afternoon flights.

Related: Should I buy my flights through my cruise line?

Check your luggage tags

The day before disembarkation, staff will deliver color- and number-coded luggage tags to your cabin, along with an approximate disembarkation time. The idea is that you put these tags on any luggage you would like the crew to handle. (See below.) These tags are important for both timing and finding your suitcase at the pier.

On disembarkation day, groups will be called by the color and number of the tags — such as Red 1 or Yellow 5 — to head to the atrium to disembark. Don't bother getting there early, or you'll find yourself milling around, which can be frustrating. It's better to grab a coffee and wait in a lounge or out by the pool.

Don't forget your group color

drawing for cruise ship

Luggage at the pier will be sorted by group color and number — and there will be thousands of bags waiting. Take a photo, or otherwise make a notation of your tag color so you will know where to look for your bags.

Pack up your liquor purchases

If you picked up a bottle of Kahlua in Mexico, rum in Jamaica or duty-free booze on your ship — which was, no doubt, held by your cruise line until the last night of the sailing — don't forget you must pick it up at the time and place your cruise ship tells you before you disembark. Then, pack the bottles in checked baggage if you are flying home.

Carefully wrap them in your dirty clothes. U.S. Customs allows you to enter the country with one liter of an alcoholic beverage per adult duty-free. You can bring in more, but you'll have to pay the taxes.

Put out your luggage

The system for removing bags from the ship works this way: On the last night of your cruise, you pack your large bags and leave them in the hall for the crew to remove and transfer to the pier.

You also have the option of carrying your own luggage off the ship. However, this is only recommended if you are able-bodied and can haul your bags down flights of stairs on the ship and at the cruise terminal. Elevator banks on both will be extremely crowded.

It's better to pack as much as you can in your luggage and let someone else do the heavy lifting. (An exception is if you only have a light carry-on , in which case, go for it.)

Set aside clothes for the morning

A rookie mistake is packing too much in the luggage that you leave outside the door, then waking up the next day to realize you forgot to leave out shoes, pants or other necessary items. Don't be the one walking to the pier barefoot or in your pajamas.

You'll want to have a carry-on suitcase or tote set aside so you can carry your toothbrush, PJs and other items off the ship. The last night is typically casual, and some cruisers find it easiest to wear the same clothes off the ship the next morning.

Pro tip: If you have any items that can't go on the plane but that you need at night, put them in a separate small bag so you remember to transfer them to your checked luggage before you get to the airport.

Scour your cabin

drawing for cruise ship

You will typically be asked to vacate your cabin by 9 a.m. or earlier on disembarkation day so that the crew can prepare for the next passengers.

If you leave any items behind, it's difficult to recover them once you're off the ship. Do a careful check of closets, drawers and even under the bed to make sure you have packed everything.

Don't forget the bedside table drawers, the very back of the shelves and the safe. If you are traveling with kids, also look for small stuffed animals or other toys hidden in any linens crumpled on the bed.

Don't take the bathrobe

If you are in a cabin that comes with a bathrobe and slippers, the slippers are typically yours to keep. However, you will be charged if you walk off with the bathrobe. The same rule applies to pool or beach towels stored in your cabin.

Check your safe

Given that safes are tucked away in closets, it's easy to forget about the important items — passports, wallets, jewelry — you've set inside. Check the safe first thing when you get up on disembarkation day, and make sure to reach your hand into every corner to feel for forgotten items.

Don't pack your keycard, ID or passport

You might think you are done with your keycard when you vacate your cabin, but you will need to tap it once more when you get off the ship.

You'll need to show your passport or other official identification to customs officials at the cruise terminal. If you have received a customs form, it's important to fill it out (one per family) before you disembark.

Related: Do I need a passport to cruise?

Go to breakfast

drawing for cruise ship

Room service is not always available on disembarkation day. Head to the buffet or main dining room to enjoy a leisurely breakfast — unless you're in a rush to get to your flight.

Check the open hours before you go because breakfast venues will likely serve meals on a different schedule on the last day of the cruise.

Respect cabin vacancy times

You will drive your room stewards crazy if you linger in your cabin beyond the recommended clear-out time. At the same time, leaving a packed carry-on bag in one corner, out of the way, while you go to breakfast might be acceptable. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Know what your luggage looks like

When you get to the cruise terminal area where thousands of bags have been placed, it helps if you know exactly what your suitcases look like. Putting a colorful ribbon or string on your bags will help you spot them.

Don't run to the bus

If you've paid your cruise line for an airport transfer, don't get stressed about missing the bus. There will be plenty available.

Staff will be on hand to direct you to a bus going to your specific airline and terminal or that does a circuit to several terminals at the airport. The buses will run again and again until everyone gets a lift.
