2024 Toyota bZ4X Limited 4dr SUV Exterior

2024 Toyota bZ4X Review

toyota bz4x cruise control

  • Smooth ride quality
  • Easy-to-use controls and touchscreen interface
  • Comfortable front seats
  • Disappointing real-world range
  • No one-pedal drive mode, which many rival EVs have
  • Lackluster acceleration and handling
  • Difficult to find a natural-feeling seating position

What's new

  • Dual-voltage (Level 1 and Level 2) charging cable is now standard
  • All-wheel-drive models can now fast charge at speeds up to 150 kW
  • Other minor updates to standard features
  • Part of the first bZ4X generation introduced for 2023

The bZ4X is the only electric vehicle that Toyota currently offers. It's a two-row SUV that's about the size of the RAV4, although it starts at a notably higher price that's closer to the Grand Highlander. The bZ4X is almost identical to the Subaru Solterra because both electric SUVs were jointly developed by both companies. For 2024, Toyota added more standard features to the bZ4X, including a power liftgate and a power-adjustable driver's seat on the XLE trim and an automated parking system on the Limited trim. A dual-voltage charging cable that can be used for Level 1 or Level 2 charging is now included on both trims.

Cost to Drive

Edmunds spotlight: a good first electric vehicle … for local driving.

The bZ4X is a good choice if you're new to EVs because it drives much like a regular gas-powered SUV. But if you've driven an EV before and enjoy the ease of one-pedal driving, you might be disappointed that the bZ4X doesn't have it. As with most Toyotas, the bZ4X is comfortable and comes standard with lots of tech, including wireless smartphone connectivity and a suite of advanced driver aids such as adaptive cruise control. It's quicker than most comparable gas-powered SUVs but slower than many of its electric SUV rivals. The bZ4X's driving range of 222-252 miles is sufficient for local commuting, but it's among the lowest in its class and not ideal for long trips.

Competitors to consider

If you stick to short commutes and don't mind the bZ4X's modest power and lack of one-pedal driving, then you'll likely be happy with the electric Toyota. But if those drawbacks are making you hesitate, then check out its rivals. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Ford Mustang Mach-E are three of our top electric SUVs. The Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y are other solid alternatives. And if you're unsure about going all-electric, consider the RAV4 Prime. It's a plug-in hybrid that provides an electric driving range and has a similar starting price as the bZ4X.

Performance

Range and efficiency, which bz4x does edmunds recommend.

Of the two trim levels the bZ4X offers, we recommend the XLE trim. Even though it's the base trim, it comes equipped with a long list of features including a large 12.3-inch touchscreen, a wireless charging pad, a package of advanced driver aids, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE also provides a longer driving range than the top Limited trim. You can opt for all-wheel drive, but we recommend only getting it if it's needed because it reduces the driving range.

Toyota bZ4X models

2023 Toyota bZ4X First Drive: An Adequate First Attempt

2023 Toyota bZ4X

Toyota is a reluctant entrant in the fully-electric vehicle segment, historically preferring the gas-electric hybrids it has spent billions to perfect. No wonder its first mass production EV, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X crossover, doesn’t quite do the job.

The bZ4X isn’t a bad EV, and not too long ago would have been a very good one. But as a 2023 model—hitting select U.S. showrooms this month—it is coming to market trailing its main competitors in range, charging speed, power and passenger volume. All are measurements in which a tough competitor would to want to lead.

Toyota, however has let others take point in EV development, avoiding the costs and problems that go along with perfecting and building cars for EV enthusiasts and early adopters. It prefers to sell to what Lisa Materazzo, Toyota-brand marketing vice president for Toyota North America, calls “early mainstream” buyers.

The bZ4X, co-developed with Subaru, is the automaker’s first “national” EV- after limited-production versions of electric RAV4s in 1997 and 2011. But the small electric crossover’s initial rollout will only be in a dozen or so states, such as California, that are considered to be EV-friendly, with 50-state availability happening late this year.

Moreover, the company—citing ongoing materials shortages and a slow-paced production ramp-up, is only bringing 7,000 of the new EV to the U.S. in 2022.  Kia, facing the same constraints, recently introduced the similarly-sized EV6 and notched up almost 5,300 sales in its first two months.

Toyota bZ4X rear

Low ‘Wow’ Factor

The bZ4X—first in a series of bZ or “beyond Zero”-branded electrics from Toyota—is a perfectly adequate and capable EV, available in two trims, XLE and Limited, and with both front- and all-wheel drive powertrains. But it offers few features that will be new to loyal Toyota buyers and, with the possible exception of its optional Subaru-derived all-wheel drive system, there’s nothing terribly exciting about it.

Its exterior design is a softer version of the origami look that debuted on the 2019 RAV4. Its interior, while very nice, is vaguely reminiscent of the minimalist look of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Although it is quite roomy for four, it has the least measured rear legroom in its class and the least total passenger volume. Its standard features list, while lengthy, doesn’t offer anything more than its competitors. Its range, from 222 miles to 258 miles depending on trim level and drivetrain, is bested by almost every other EV in its size and price range.

Toyota will aim its (mostly online) advertising at 35- to 45-year olds with good incomes and a basic understanding of EVs, Materazzo said.

2023 Toyota bZ4X taillights

Price is Right, For Now

Two areas in which the bZ4X does compete well are cargo space—at 27.7 cubic-feet behind the seats only the VW ID.4 has more—and on price. The base front-drive trim starts at $43,215, the base all-wheel at $45,295. The Volkswagen ID.4 is the only competitor with more cargo area and the only one with lower pricing. But the bZ’s price advantage may not last.

With its Prius and RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrids selling well, Toyota is about to hit the magic number—200,000 electric vehicle sales—at which its eligibility for a $7,500 federal tax credit for buyers of its plug-in models starts phasing out.

Without an extension of federal EV incentives—something Congress is discussing—the maximum tax credit bZ4X buyers can claim will drop to $3,750 as early as the final quarter of 2022. Six months later it would halve again to just $1,875 before disappearing altogether six months after that. Meanwhile, competitors will continue enjoying full eligibility.

Toyota bZ4X dashboard

An AWD Edge?

The bZ4X might have an advantage over competitors other than the Solterra for shoppers looking for off-road chops in an electric crossover. The electronic all-wheel drive system it shares with the Subie uses an electronic controller to apportion torque and braking to prevent wheel spin.

It uses Subaru’s X-Mode, which electronically controls engine speed and transmission and braking performance on off-road surfaces and includes Grip Control, which operates as a low-speed cruise control when driving on slippery roads. This is a good system, but we can’t say how much the mainstream buyers Toyota is targeting will care about it.

On our half-day drive with both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations of the top Limited trim, Toyota didn’t allow for any off-pavement testing, and Subaru’s Solterra hasn’t been available for review, so we can’t extrapolate from that.

2023 Toyota bZ4X Cargo Seats in place

bZ4X On the Road

The bZ4X offers a composed, comfortable, roomy and quiet ride on the asphalt. The electronic steering is a bit numb and the handling isn’t as sporty as a Ford Mustang Mach-E or an EV6, but Toyota isn’t marketing it as a performance machine. Ride and handling are tuned for Toyota’s “legacy” customers.

Both front- and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions are solidly planted and there’s little bouncing or body roll on corners, thanks to the skateboard style EV platform that places the lithium-ion battery pack under the floor for a low center of gravity.

Acceleration isn’t blistering—7.1 seconds from standstill to 60 mph for front-drive versions, 6.5 seconds for all-wheel drive. But both bZ4X versions can handily accelerate onto highways, pass at speed and handle steep ascents.

2023 Toyota bZ4X stack

A two-panel glass roof, one section for each row of seats, is standard, but while it provides an open and airy feel on the road, it also admits sunlight that renders touchscreen icons and climate system control switches unreadable when it bounces off the face of the 12.3-inch touchscreen.

The 7.0-inch configurable driver information screen set on the dash behind the steering wheel is sheltered from the glare. But to make that screen visible, Toyota’s the maximum height the adjustable steering wheel can attain is set fairly low. With the top rim of the wheel below chest height for taller drivers, it can be a bit like steering a go-kart.

Power, Range and Charging

Toyota sourced bZ4X batteries from two suppliers for the U.S.models—a result of global materials shortages. It uses a 71.4 kilowatt-hour pack—total capacity —for front-drive trims and a 72.8 kWh pack for all-wheel-drive versions. In Europe and Japan only the 71.4 kWh packs are used. The company has set a goal of a 90% battery capacity retention after 10 years or 150,000 miles, but doesn’t guarantee it.

The front-drive powertrain puts out 201 horsepower and 196 pound-feet of torque from a 150-kilowatt motor. EPA-range ratings are up to 252 miles for the XLE and 242 miles for the heavier Limited.

The AWD powertrain is good for a scant increase to 214 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque from a pair of 80-kilowatt motors, one on each axle. Range ratings are 228 miles for the XLE and 222 miles for the Limited.

Toyota bZ4X back seat

Only the Mach-E Standard Range offers less range, at 211 miles with all-wheel drive and 230 miles with rear-drive. Kia’s EV6 leads the pack at 274 miles for all-wheel drive and 310 miles for rear-drive. For everyday charging, the bZ4X has a 6.6 kilowatt on-board charger. A faster 11 kW charger be an option by the end of the year, but it is standard with most competitors will. At 6.6. kW, it takes about 10 hours on a 240-volt circuit to fully replenish a depleted bZ4X battery pack.

On road trips, front-drive bZ4X trims can use DC fast charging at up to 150 kilowatts per hour while AWD versions can fast-charge at 100 kW. Toyota estimates a 30-minute session can take a front-drive bZ4X battery from 10% back up to 80% of capacity. For AWD versions, that time almost doubles.

BZ4X owners will get a year of free fast charging on the EVgo network and can add a 240-volt home charger and installation to their financing package when ordering through a dealer.

Toyota bZ4X side view

Safety and Tech

The bZ4X gets Toyota’s latest suite of safety and driver assist systems, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. It debuts with the bZ4X and provides improved bicyclist and pedestrian recognition and longer-range radar and sonar for improved lane keeping, blind spot and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control.

Toyota’s first EV also gets the multimedia infotainment system that debuted in the 2022 Toyota Tundra. It includes cloud-based navigation, Wi-Fi-based Apple and Amazon music streaming, dual smartphone pairing, and over-the-air software updates.

Big Plans

With gas prices soaring and wait lists for many EVs growing, selling 7,000 bZ4X EVs in year one shouldn’t be difficult for Toyota’s dealers. And while the bZ4X has its handicaps, it gets EV shoppers thinking about Toyota—something they’ve not been able to do in the past.

Toyota bZ4X rear

That’s good for the company because reluctant as it has been, Toyota’s now planning a veritable flood of fully electric cars and crossovers—30 of them globally – by 2030. It has said it will spend a total of $70 billion on all types of vehicle electrification by then, though that includes investment in PHEVs and Hydrogen.

Small electric crossovers are only one part of the plan, but an important one. The segment is fairly limited now, but several players are preparing entries—like the Solterra, 2023 Nissan Ariya and 2024 Honda Prologue—that will compete directly with the new Toyota. As the segment grows Toyota will need more than the bZ4X provides if it hopes to see its EV family become as dominant a force as its hybrids.

Toyota bZ4X

4.0 out of 5

5.0 out of 5

Safety and reliability are both traditional Toyota strong points, and it doesn’t look like that’s changed with the brand’s transition to electric power. The bZ4X received the maximum five-star safety rating from crash-test experts Euro NCAP, thanks in part to a strong suite of standard active safety systems.

Toyota bZ4X reliability & problems

Toyota is taking its first proper step into the world of electric vehicles with the bZ4X, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be any big concerns over reliability. This is reflected by the bZ4X’s 10-year/150,000-mile battery warranty and Toyota’s decent 12th-place finish in our 2023 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey , with a below-average 15% of owners reporting a fault with their cars within the first year of ownership.

Toyota did announce a recall for the bZ4X, and its Subaru Solterra sister car, in June 2022 due to issues with wheel hub bolts that could have caused wheels to come loose while driving. Only one bZ4X had been delivered in the UK at the time of the recall, and the Japanese firm has stated that the problem has been solved.

In recent years, Toyota has adopted a philosophy of offering a complete suite of active safety equipment across every trim level of its cars, instead of reserving the higher-tech systems for range-topping models. That admirable approach continues with the bZ4X, which gets the latest third-generation iteration of the brand’s 'Toyota Safety Sense' suite of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology.

Standard crash-avoidance systems include automatic emergency braking with collision warnings, cross-traffic alerts, detection of vehicles approaching an intersection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, road-sign recognition and automatic high-beam headlights.

The only features absent on the entry-level Pure trim level are blind-spot monitoring and a sensor that warns you not to open the doors if a car or bicycle is approaching; these are standard on the Motion and Vision models. The bZ4X’s extensive list of safety features allowed the electric SUV to receive the full five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating, its 91% score for safety assistance in particular.

Adaptive Cruise Control Failure - Be Careful !!!

I made my first long distance journey with bZ4X. As you can see in the video, activated adaptive cruise control (ACC) but car did not detect front car and if I didn't brake, it would crash! This is a very important safety failure, I dont know what is wrong with sensors. I tested this 3-4 times and everytime same problem happend on that rainy journey.

If I compare; I used Volvo XC90, Rav4, Skoda Karoq before with ACC but never had this failure even in very heavy rainy days. Only some days rav4 deactivated ACC and other safety features such as lane assist due to dirty sensors.

Please see video, I had to brake car last minute and this deactivated ACC. I will report this to Toyota.

Edit: I set ACC the longest distance, It should follow the front car with minumum 40 m distance @ this speed.

It's difficult to tell for certain from the video clip, but it would appear that it did detect the car in front and then 'lost' it (and once you'd touched the brakes the system was deactivated anyway). Either way you need to take this back to the dealer to investigate / address.

The system shouldn't be that different from that fitted to the RAV4 and, while I don't bother with LTA, the ACC works exceedingly well - including in rain and heavy spray where the system can 'see' rather better than I can!

To add ... there is a TSB / recall for the LTA system for the bZ4X (amongst others) - you might want to check whether this applies to your car and whether or not the fix has been applied ...

Yes, my dealer confirmed that they applied fix for that.

Actually, I manually turned ACC off and on at the begining of this video. Car didn't detect front car at all! When I was too close I pressed the brake and ACC disabled itself. I tested this with a bigger size car front me and on the middle lane, but I got same problem and sensor didn't detect the front car. Rav4 has safety sense 2.5 but bZ4X has safety sense 3.0, thus I expect much more better and improved detection. 🙄

Just a thought, are you quite sure you enabled ACC rather than CC?

The behaviour suggests CC which will maintain speed right to the point of emergency braking.

I used the ACC and LTA on several recent long motorway journeys with my bZ4X in really bad weather just like your conditions. For stop-start and cruising I found ACC gave perfect control -slowing down nicely and then starting up again and maintaining a good distance from the car in front. Quite different to your car, so maybe there is a problem.  On these journeys a lot of road grime had built up on the front sensor panel (found after completed journey) but nevertheless the system still worked fine.

Thanks

I can only say what I see ... there's a certain amount of "messing about" and setting up at the beginning of the video, and then:

  • at 12 seconds in the car is travelling at 62mph with ACC set at 70mph and the road apparently 'clear' ahead - the car should be accelerating towards the set speed
  • at 13 seconds, the car has reached a speed of 64mph with ACC still set at 70mph but showing detection of a car ahead - the car should be considering matching it's speed to that of the car ahead
  • at 14 seconds, the car has reached a speed of 65mph with ACC still set at 70mph and still showing detection of a car ahead - the car should be considering matching it's speed to that of the car ahead
  • at 15 seconds, the situation is that same as at 14 seconds in
  • at 16 seconds, the car is still at 65mph with ACC set at 70mph but the road ahead is shown as clear so that the car is free to accelerate again
  • at 17 seconds, the situation is that same as at 16 seconds in, but now / shortly we see the car ahead brake
  • at 18 seconds, the car is up to 66mph and you have, rather sensibly, decided to "take back control" ...

The video doesn't always show the car in front or the ACC display but I would have expected the system to detect the car in front pretty much throughout the video - and, clearly, it doesn't ...

Looking at what Philip has said, with my ACC engaged the car will slow when the car in front slows and will continue to slow after that car has pulled off the lane even though my lane is clear.

Does it work properly in the dry or is this what it always does?

I must admit I'm not as familiar with its behaviour under braking as I find the car brakes too late and too harshly for my tastes when closing on slowing/stopped traffic at highway+ speeds, so I quickly got in the habit of just jabbing the cancel button if I see cars slowing ahead, so I can let the car coast down well in advance (rather than continue at the same speed and then suddenly brake, which is what the ACC tends to do), and then re-engage it when the traffic speeds up and starts to pull away again.

In very heavy rain, my ACC also "lost" a car and shortly after a message popper up to say the system was in active. I just drove manually until next services. When I stopped later the front was filthy so I think it was the sensors got covered in mucky spray and couldn't cope as once I cleaned them off, it didn't happen again

On Cyker's point, if you do leave 3 bar spacing on ACC it just seems to be an invitation to the following truck to overtake regardless that all lane 1 traffic is travelling at 59.5 mph 😬

Can someone confirm that the black plastic plate centre of the front grill is the radar dielectric panel?

Yes, first I thought same. I checked that before the video and adaptive cruise control was on not speed limiter.

Yes footage is correct. This is how they programmed the acc. Last 5 miles car slowly accelerate. You can test it. You will see after 65 car will slowly accelerate to 70.

I am pretty sure ACC was active 😊 and didn't detect the front car. I was shocked couldn't beleive like you so thats why I recorded video and test it on different lane with a different size car front me. My driver's license is over 20 years old and I actively use ACC for long-distance travel. Maybe this is my cars failure not a common problem. I wanted to inform others just incase, because this is a serous safety bug.

1 hour ago, bZ4X said: Yes, first I thought same. I checked that before the video and adaptive cruise control was on not speed limiter.

No, speed limiter is a different function.  Cruise control has 2 modes, adaptive and fixed.  I don't know the procedure in the BZ4X, in my Corolla you pressed the CC button to activate ACC or press and hold for 3 seconds IIRC, to engage fixed CC.

In UK, with busy roads, ACC is probably the better mode.  On the continent with less busy roads and easy passing in lane 2 using FCC is better.

One other thought, and this may not apply in your case, is the  ACC override function.

Closing a slower vehicle, if you indicate you want to  pull out this will deactivate ACC and switch to FCC. Once you have moved to lane 2 and stopped indicating the car will revert to ACC.

We have a button to choose functions on steering wheel on bz4x. ACC was activated and speed limit you can see that I increased to 70 mph in the video while ACC was on. I will return tomorrow and will test again today weather is sunny lets see tomorrow.

BZ4X, the same, and the control for ACC and FCC is the same.  It is possible to select FCC when you thought you had just selected ACC.

Have a look at your manual and check you have not selected FCC by mistake.  FCC is my TLA.

I wasn't sure so I washed the whole front of the car and that seemed to work (or could be a complete read herring and just stopping the car and restarting solved it)

I am %100 ACC was active, you can't confuse them as CC has a different logo. You can make sure ACC was active too just watch video you will only see lane and and horizontal distance lines when ACC active not CC.

Like below one frum user guide:

Hello everyone I tested my bZ4X again on the motorway with 1 hour driving under different conditions. My results:

1) If the bz4x sensors adjust the car's own speed relative to the car in front, you will see a car logo like the one below.

Notes_230103_151227_162.thumb.jpg.00b2bd45e29da89b9f78557417d70b6a.jpg

2) if road is clear or cannot detect car front, then car logo dissappears! Please see below picture:

IMG-20230103-WA0009.thumb.jpg.1cd72ef98e914e4c03feca2690201ff8.jpg

And somehow bz4x sometimes doesn't detect front car or cant decide 😊 . Maybe  spray thrown up by vehicles affects the sensors.

I recorded another video today on the return way. And my main concern is not ACC but emergency break. If acoustic sensors cannot detect the distance between two cars won't be able to perform emergency brake as well . See after 00:17 lost the detection! Again, I had to brake to avoid crushing front car at the end of the video.

As well as the vehicle in front when the system detects it ... and then loses it again ... 😞

There's something not right and you probably need to get the dealer to look at it.

Thats right it might be only my car. Just wanted share with you as this is a serious safety problem. I will send an email with all my videos and experiences. They should check car logs and report to Toyota JP.

3 minutes ago, bZ4X said: See after 00:17 lost the detection!

Wow! That's really odd. They do say that the system may miss a car cutting in in front of you, but, in this case it just lost sight of everything.

Toyota bZ4X: your questions answered

' data-src=

The all-new Toyota bZ4X is the first model in our beyond Zero family of zero-emission battery electric vehicles . Displayed here in production-ready form, this spacious and comfortable SUV will launch across Europe in 2022.

Its arrival will also introduce a new leasing programme designed to cover the principal aspects of ownership – a one-stop concept that is designed to provide peace of mind for people acquiring their first BEV.

Toyota bZ4X

Toyota bZ4X: What are its exterior design features?

The exterior design is sleek, powerful and uncluttered, led by a distinctive hammerhead frontal shape. When viewed in profile, the bZ4X has a low roof and slender A-pillars, while the combination of thick sills and large wheels (up to 20-inch in diameter) express the car’s authentic SUV character. At the rear, the design similarly emphasises the corners, with a distinctive tail light that spans the width of the vehicle.

The design also incorporates aerodynamic elements that manage airflow and contribute to the driving range. These include apertures in the front bumper corners that create smooth air curtains; a full underbody cover; a split roof spoiler and rear ducktail lip spoiler; rear diffuser; and a precisely angled rear screen. The slim lower grille has a shutter that adjusts to channel cooling airflow to the battery and helps reduce wind resistance.

Beneath the surface, the bZ4X is the first Toyota to be built on our new, dedicated BEV platform. Known as e-TNGA, it incorporates the battery as a structural member of the chassis – a feature that creates high body rigidity, a low centre of gravity, and excellent front/rear weight distribution.

Toyota bZ4X

What’s it like inside bZ4X?

The long wheelbase has helped us create a spacious, open and comfortable five-seat cabin that has the welcoming ambience of a living room. There is class-leading leg room for all, with a one-metre distance between the front and rear hip points, while the load area offers 452 litres of storage with the rear seats in place.

Adding to the sense of openness and outward visibility is the slim and low-set instrument panel, which allows the seven-inch instrument and information display to sit above the line of the steering wheel, directly in the driver’s forward eye line.

toyota bz4x cruise control

Passenger comfort is assured by an energy efficient heating system that maximises driving range. Rather than a standard air conditioning system, the bZ4X uses a heat pump to warm the car by drawing heat from the external air.

What will the multimedia system be like?

The centrally mounted multimedia platform is our latest and most powerful system, offering a 12-inch touchscreen that gives access to cloud-based navigation. It also provides BEV-specific features such as driving range, driving support and charging station details. The driver can interact with the vehicle by sight, touch and voice, while over-the-air updates provide seamless software upgrades and new services.

Toyota bZ4X: What are its performance credentials?

There are both front- and all-wheel drive versions of the bZ4X. The front-wheel drive model is powered by a 150kW electric motor which produces 201bhp and 265Nm of torque; it offers 0-62mph acceleration in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 100mph. The all-wheel drive model is powered by two 80kW electric motors – one for each axle – that produce a total of 214.5bhp and 336Nm of torque. Top speed is unchanged but the dash to 62mph is reduced to 6.9 seconds.

We have drawn on almost 25 years of experience in battery technology to ensure the new lithium-ion unit has world-leading quality, durability and reliability. Our confidence in the technology is reflected in an extended care programme that guarantees the battery will still operate to 70% of its original capacity after up to ten years of ownership or one million kilometres (620,000 miles) driven, subject to the customer taking their vehicle to an authorised Toyota service centre for an annual health check.

This is made possible because multiple systems have been put in place to monitor the voltage, current and temperature of each individual battery cell. In a Toyota first, the battery is water cooled, while there are safeguards in the manufacturing process to prevent foreign matter from entering the battery, and further countermeasures to mitigate any material degradation when in use.

toyota bz4x cruise control

What is the the driving range and how quickly will bZ4X charge?

Thanks to efficient motors and energy management, official WLTP data shows that the front-wheel drive Pure model can achieve a driving range of 317 miles (4.3 miles per kWh) from its 71.4kWh battery. For the all-wheel drive bZ4X Motion, the official range is 285 miles (3.9 miles per kWh).

An 80% charge can be achieved in around 30 minutes using a 150kW fast-charging system (CCS2), while an 11kW three-phase on-board charger will be available from the fourth quarter of 2022 to further improve charging performance.

Toyota will operate a programme of rebuilding, reusing and recycling for the battery, ensuring the lifecycle of its components and materials is maximised.

What will the all-electric Toyota bZ4X be like to drive?

The bZ4X is the first production Toyota to offer a steer-by-wire system, though this will be introduced in Europe at a later date. Known as One Motion Grip , it dispenses with the mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and front wheels, instead using electronic means to adjust the front wheel angle according to the driver’s intention.

With no physical connection in the system, not only is legroom improved but unwanted vibration from the tyres is not transmitted through the steering. However, the driver still experiences valuable feedback through independent control of the steering torque, with different drive modes programmed with unique steering characteristics to suit prevailing conditions.

Similarly, the throttle is controlled through a wired rather than mechanical connection. It offers the option of single pedal driving using boosted braking energy recuperation to let the driver accelerate and slow the vehicle using only the throttle pedal.

toyota bz4x cruise control

How capable will the Toyota bZ4X be off-road?

Toyota worked with its development partner Subaru in engineering a new, class-leading BEV all-wheel drive system that draws on the great AWD heritage of both companies. The system uses separate 80kW motors to drive the front and rear axles. X MODE allows the driver to select a drive mode to suit the conditions, with settings for snow/mud; deep snow and mud (below 13mph); and Grip Control for tougher off-road driving (below 6mph). These segment-leading capabilities will help the bZ4X tackle the route ahead with confidence, irrespective of where it leads.

toyota bz4x cruise control

How safe is the new Toyota bZ4X?

The bZ4X is equipped with advanced Toyota T-Mate systems for active safety and driver assistance. The third generation of Toyota Safety Sense brings new and improved functions to help guard against an even wider range of accident risks. The latest developments strengthen its capabilities as a partner to the driver, progressing closer to the ultimate mobility society goal of zero fatalities and injuries in traffic accidents.

Thanks to upgraded front camera and radar, as well front side radars, the detection range has been expanded and the car’s ability to recognise hazards and obstacles in even more driving scenarios is further improved.

  • The Pre-Collision System can detect oncoming vehicles and motorcycles.
  • The Intersection Turn Assistance can now identify approaching traffic across two neighbouring lanes instead of just one, as well as detect traffic approaching from the side at an intersection.
  • The Emergency Steering Assist system provides additional mild braking to help keep the car within its traffic lane when the driver moves to avoid a hazard such as a pedestrian, cyclist or parked car.
  • The Front Cross Traffic Alert system warns of vehicles approaching from either side at a junction.
  • The new Safe Exit Assist can help to avoid a collision between an opened door or exiting occupants with vehicles or cyclists approaching from the rear.

Toyota Safety Sense also checks the driver’s well-being with an internal monitor that records their usual driving position and triggers a warning if it detects any deviation that might signal dangerous distraction or the driver being unwell or falling asleep.

What is this new vehicle leasing programme?

Our all-new BEV will be introduced with a completely new approach to vehicle purchasing and the customer’s ownership experience. It is our hope the majority of European sales will be via a new, all-inclusive leasing contract that covers the vehicle, maintenance, wall box charger and access to connected services, including one of Europe’s largest vehicle charging networks.

If customers wish, Toyota insurance can also be included, along with roadside assistance and vehicle accessories.

toyota bz4x cruise control

C harging and roadside assistance

In order to ensure that bZ4X ownership is as stress-free as possible, Toyota is providing all new customers with a complimentary package of benefits.

The first round of benefits cover charging needs. These include a British Gas Centrica EV home charger with standard installation and six months of access to the Toyota Public Charging Network. This network consists of more than 12,000 charging points, all of which are accessible through the MyToyota app .

The second primary benefit is three years of AA Roadside Assistance. This is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, throughout the UK and across 44 European countries.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Moves to Tundra Platform, Gets All Turbo Power

Toyota’s long-running 4Runner enters its sixth generation without a few cylinders.

2025 toyota 4runner

  • The 2025 Toyota 4Runner will usher in a sixth generation of Toyota’s off-roader.
  • The redesigned 4Runner loses its V6 and replaces it with the choice of either a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine or a 2.4-liter I4 hybrid powertrain.
  • Toyota says the 2025 4Runner is scheduled to hit dealers in the fall of 2024.

Toyota’s current 4Runner debuted in 2009 and has only become more popular with time. For 2025, Toyota is moving the 4Runner to the same TNGA-F platform that underpins the latest Tacoma, downsizing the powerplant and totally replacing the sheetmetal.

For some, the underhood changes might be the biggest pivot. The venerable 4.0-liter V6 is finally gone, replaced, instead, with a 2.4-liter turbocharged I4. In base trim, this 2.4-liter I4 sends 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic.

2025 toyota 4runner at mission beach san diego reveal

Like the Toyota Tacoma , the 4Runner will also be available as a hybrid, which adds a 48-hp electric motor into the mix, cranking total output to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid powertrain also uses an eight-speed automatic. From there, power travels to the rear wheels through a part-time or a full-time four-wheel-drive system.

For some context, the current 4Runner’s aforementioned V6 sends 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque through a five-speed transmission.

While Toyota hasn’t revealed any fuel economy figures, if the Tacoma is any indication, there will be gains. The 2.4-liter turbo under the hood of two-wheel-drive Tacoma pickups boasts 23 mpg combined, 26 highway mpg, and 20 city mpg. That’s a 2 mpg combined bump over the outgoing 3.5-liter V6 .

We should expect a similar bump for the next-gen 4Runner. We can also see the 2024 Land Cruiser, which offers a similar powertrain, turns out 23 mpg combined from 25 highway mpg and 22 city mpg.

Surrounding this engine is entirely new sheetmetal. This sixth-generation 4Runner has grown considerably in its latest iteration, gaining in every direction. The ’25 Toyota 4Runner is 194.4 inches long and rides on a 112.2-inch wheelbase, gaining 4.7 inches and 2.4 inches, respectively, over the outgoing model. It’s almost two inches wider, too, at 77.8 inches.

As for ground clearance, Toyota says the new 4Runner can clear 9.2 inches, which is 0.2 inches higher than the outgoing two-wheel-drive model, but 0.4 inches lower than the outgoing four-wheel-drive 4Runner.

2025 toyota 4runner

Alongside a new engine, standard 4Runners will see an 8-inch touchscreen media system, with higher trim models getting a 14-inch multimedia screen. Likewise, entry-level 4Runners pack a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, replaced by a 12.3-inch digital cluster on upper trims.

Toyota is adding a smart-key system with a push-button ignition as standard equipment across the board, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Underpinning all of this is the new TNGA-F platform shared with the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. This means the new 4Runner will feature a multi-link rear suspension and a double-wishbone front suspension.

Slick features for off-roaders like sway bar disconnects are also joining the list of 4Runner features. Toyota is oddly secretive about wheel and tire options, except for with the new Trailhunter trim. This version will ride on 33 inches of Toyo Open Country A/T tires.

As for the trim walk, the entry-point is still the SR5 model. From there, you move into the TRD Sport and TRD Sport Premium models. Those models all see the standard 2.4-liter turbocharged I4 mill.

Kicking off the hybrid-equipped models is the Limited Trim, which is joined by TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD-Pro. Rounding out the list of available models are the new Trailhunter and the luxe-focused Platinum trim.

2025 toyota 4runner

As you’d expect from any generational shift, this 4Runner is packed with active driver assistance features. The ’25 4Runner comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0, which includes automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and a full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control system as standard equipment.

The 4Runner also gets lane-departure alert with a steering-assist system, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and Toyota’s Proactive Driving Assist system. This last system uses the camera suite to help subtly add steering and braking inputs around other vehicles, pedestrians, or curves.

2025 toyota 4runner on mission beach in san diego

Toyota says this new 4Runner will be built at the company’s plant in Tahara, Japan, and is scheduled to hit showrooms this fall.

Pricing is still locked inside a Toyota executive’s filing cabinet, but it’s safe to say there will be a price increase. Currently, a 4Runner will set you back at least $42,100. Likely, the next-gen 4Runner’s base SR5 model will still start closer to $45,000.

TORONTO, Ontario (April 18, 2024) – The Toyota Camry is the current best-selling mid-size sedan in Canada due to its striking good looks, quality, and dependability. The new 2025 Toyota Camry continues to build on that success by going exclusively hybrid and combining an athletic exterior style, a new interior design and impressive technology features.

“At Toyota, we know a well-engineered sedan delivers an incredible driving experience that nothing else can match – and for those who love to drive, our designers and engineers have created an all-new, exclusively-electrified Camry that delivers a winning combination of dynamic performance, handling, and comfort,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “This new Camry also demonstrates how, as the last full-line automaker, Toyota remains committed to offering every Canadian a range of vehicles that addresses their needs, exceeds their expectations, and suits their preferences and lifestyles – including those who love sedans.”

Industry-leading hybrid technology has become synonymous with the Toyota brand and the ninth-generation Camry brings its A-game. The 2025 Toyota Camry pairs the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5) with a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine and has a standard 225 net-combined horsepower on Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) models and 232 HP on Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) equipped models.

The Toyota Camry, for the first time on a hybrid, offers available Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) across three grades in Canada: SE Upgrade, XSE and XLE. With a dedicated rear electric motor, the AWD system supplies power to the rear wheels for additional traction when needed, either in adverse weather conditions, accelerating from a stop or during dynamic driving around curves.

100 Percent Hybrid, No Compromise The 2025 Toyota Camry pairs the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5) with a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine and has a standard 225 net-combined horsepower on Front-Wheel Drive (FWD). Not only is this the most standard horsepower offered on a Camry, but it also features outstanding fuel efficiency, with fuel consumption ratings of 4.6/4.6/4.6 L/100 km (City/Highway/Combined). The system uses lighter and more compact electric motor generators to produce more power and enhanced performance compared to the previous system.

Toyota engineers tuned the new THS 5 system to provide a more natural acceleration feel that is synchronized with the increase in engine speed. This was achieved by increasing the amount of power from the Lithium-Ion traction battery through the electric motor generator to suppress high increases in engine revolutions during acceleration.

Camry also has an electronically controlled Continuous Variable Transmission (eCVT) that intelligently finds the right gear ratio for the amount throttle input – promoting optimal fuel efficiency.

Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive Across All Grades For added peace of mind, Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is available on several grades. It has been adapted to work seamlessly with THS 5 and utilizes an electric motor generator on the rear axle resulting in 232 net-combined horsepower – 30 more horsepower than the outgoing gas model with a mechanical All-Wheel Drive.

The system provides precise on-demand front-rear torque distribution in accordance with driving conditions to support start-off acceleration, handling and stability in everyday driving situations. If the system deems the roads as slippery or it senses loss of tire grip, the distribution of torque to the rear wheels is then controlled to deliver ample traction performance to help keep the Camry on the desired path further helping to promote driver confidence.

The Camry SE AWD and XLE AWD are rated at 5.1/5.1/5.1 L/100 km while the Camry XSE AWD is rated at 5.3/5.5/5.3 L/100km (City/Highway/Combined).

Balanced Handling and Comfort Drivers will enjoy the retuned suspension with enhanced responsiveness and agile handling, adding a sense of thrill when taking on those twisting and turning roads. All models feature an optimally tuned MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. The SE and XSE grades have a specific sport-tuned suspension with new shock absorbers in the front and rear including a larger diameter front stabilizer bar for increased comfort, while still providing even greater stability, handling, and confidence behind the wheel.

Further control is provided by an enhanced brake feel from the newly adopted braking system. The Electronically Controlled Braking system (ECB) features on-demand pressurization provided through a new pump motor in the brake actuator enabling greater controllability and brake feel.

Drivers can also customize their Camry’s drive feel to suit their specific tastes with standard selectable NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes.

Sleek Silhouette The ninth-generation Camry, designed by CALTY’s Newport Beach, California and Ann Arbor, Michigan studios, delivers a sleeker, more athletic look to the new sedan. The distinctive hammerhead front face adds a fresh and modern design that has become a Toyota signature. All grades feature LED headlights and daytime running lights.

On the XLE grade, customers will be greeted with a refined style featuring a horizontal bar front grille finished in dark metallic grey and 18-in. Black and machine-finished alloy wheels. XLE further stands out from the lineup with chrome-finished window trim accompanying the chrome-finished Camry name badge.

The SE, SE Upgrade and XSE grades add aggressive sporty flare to the Camry lineup with sport-mesh front grilles, side sport rockers and black finishes that add to the sleek roofline and chiseled body. Functional front side air ducts, canards, rear spoiler and rear diffuser add to the racing inspired design helping aerodynamic performance. The rear also has an exposed dual-tip exhaust further showcasing a sporty impression. The Camry name badge is styled in gloss black on both sport grades, while the XSE’s badge is backed by a unique blacked-out trunk garnish. The XSE is sure to turn heads and leans further into the sporty styling with a colour-matched front grille, front side canards, and rear diffuser. When it comes to the wheels, the SE features 16-in. alloys, the SE Upgrade features 18-in. black-finished alloys and XSE comes well equipped with range topping 19-in. black and smoke gray-finished alloy wheels.

Exterior colour options include newly available Ocean Gem and Heavy Metal that will join Camry favorites like White, Wind Chill Pearl, Celestial Silver Metallic, Underground, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red, and Reservoir Blue. The XSE grade adds an available two-tone look with Ocean Gem, Wind Chill Pearl, Heavy Metal and Supersonic Red paired with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.

Inside the Cabin Merging with the impeccable craftsmanship of Camry, the modern open-concept and refined materials offer a unique experience to the interior design of each grade.

Beginning with the sport grades, the SE comes with SofTex®-trimmed seats featuring sporty bold white accents in Black while the XSE adds a standard leather-trimmed interior with artistic “shooting blade” patterned perforations found on both the side door trim and seating surfaces. The XSE interior is available in two colours: Black with blue-lined perforations or the fan-favorite Cockpit Red. SE, SE Upgrade and XSE grades come equipped with standard aluminum sport pedals and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters and a leather-wrapped shift knob.

The XLE grade also showcases its own interior personality and style. This comfort grade is the first Toyota Camry to feature a combination of leather and Dinamica® microfiber-trim; offered in Light Gray or Black. A quilted pattern with the Dinamica® trim can also be found inset on the front door panels and dashboard.

The Camry will also have enhanced seat comfort. Toyota engineers achieved this by changing the shape and density of the seat cushion and by increasing the cushion length. The headrest was also softened and moved rearward to enhance seat ergonomics and ride comfort. That comfort is extended with 8-way power driver and 6-way manual passenger seats, heated front seats and heated steering wheel that all come standard on the SE entry grade in Canada. The higher-end XLE and XSE grades also add standard front ventilated seat, as well as an 8-way power passenger seat.

An even quieter cabin can be found inside the XLE and XSE grades thanks to the standard front-side acoustic laminated glass to help reduce wind noise and harshness.

The Toyota Camry also sets the standard for convenience. The next generation model comes with a standard Push Button Start and a dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear air vents. And for those who may have multiple drivers in the household, the XLE grade offers an available driver’s memory seat and memory side view mirrors. For added convenience, the XLE also adds available automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers. For the first time on a Camry hybrid, the XLE and XSE grades will be equipped with a standard power tilt and slide panoramic roof with a power-retractable sunshade.

Advanced Technology For the 2025 model, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster comes standard on SE and SE Upgrade models, while a standard 12.3-in fully digital gauge cluster can be found in the XLE and XSE grades. The XLE and XSE grades also come with a standard 10-inch Head-Up Display to allow drivers to check their speed, see warning indicators, and turn-by-turn navigation while also paying attention to the road ahead.

The Toyota Multimedia System includes a standard 8-inch touchscreen display on SE and SE Upgrade models, or a 12.3-inch screen on XLE and XSE grades. The system includes standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, and pairs well with the standard Qi wireless charging pad. The Camry also offers a standard combination of five USB ports, with three in the front (2 USB-C and 1 USB-A media port) and two in the rear (1 USB-C and 1 USB-A) across all grades.

Access to a wide range of enhanced connectivity features is also available. Toyota Multimedia allows simultaneous dual Bluetooth® phone connectivity.

With an active available Drive Connect** trial or subscription, Camry drivers can also interact with the system through touch and voice activation. With Intelligent Assistant available through Drive Connect**, simple phrases like “Hey Toyota” awakens the system for voice-activated commands to search for directions, find Points of Interest (POI), adjust audio controls, change the cabin temperatures and more. Over-the-Air (OTA) updates will also be available.

Additional features include audio playback ability with HD Radio®, USB data and a SiriusXM® 3-month trial subscription. And for those who enjoy premium sounds during commutes, Camry offers a nine speaker JBL® Premium Audio system standard on the XLE and XSE grades.

Additional connected services are available on the Camry as well. The up to 10-year Safety Connect** trial includes an Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), 24/7 Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification and Stolen Vehicle Locator. The up to 10-year Service Connect** trial provides drivers the capability of receiving Vehicle Health Reports, Maintenance Alerts and reminders.

A Digital Key is available on XLE and XSE grades. With an active Remote Connect** trial or subscription, drivers can use the Digital Key via the Toyota app and allow passive entry unlock on front doors and trunk or push button start in-cabin using your smartphone as the key.

**Subscription required after trial period. 4G Network-dependent.

Safety & Convenience The Toyota Camry comes standard with Blind Spot Monitor, which is designed to warn you when a vehicle in the next lane enters Camry’s blind spot on either side of the vehicle. And when you’re in reverse, the standard Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) helps detect vehicles approaching from either side, warning you with side mirror indicators and a warning tone. As part of the Blind Spot Monitor functionality, Safe Exit Assist (SEA) helps support avoidance of collisions between an open door and/or occupants who have exited and vehicles approaching from the rear.

The famous Toyota 4Runner got a facelift for the first time in over a decade — see the new beefed-up version with a hybrid option

  • The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner includes several new features, including a new hybrid option.
  • The vehicle still draws on many elements from earlier generations of the classic SUV design.
  • Toyota's latest offroader is just one of the company's various hybrid offerings .

Insider Today

Toyota recently unveiled its 2025 4Runner, the newest reimagining of its classic SUV design — and, for the first time, there's a hybrid option included.

The newest models have powertrains of up to 326 horsepower, as well as new safety features like off-road cruise control and articulation settings.

The 4Runner isn't the first Toyota off-roader to get the hybrid treatment; the company already offers hybrid variants of its Land Cruiser and Tacoma pickup truck, among several other models .

But it comes as some automakers turn their ambitions away from fully electric vehicles and add more accessible (and widely popular) hybrids to the mix.

"This sixth-generation model offers a cool new look and incredible features, yet retains the rugged style and capability our customers love about this icon of adventure," said Dave Christ, a vice president and general manager at Toyota North America, in a statement .

The exact price range of the new 4Runner is unclear, but the previous model starts at around $41,000.

Here's what the new 2025 lineup looks like.

There are options for offroaders and more luxury-inclined drivers alike.

toyota bz4x cruise control

The 2025 4Runner offers nine different variants, including two all-new grades: the 4Runner Trailhunter, a rugged overland rig, and the more luxury-oriented 4Runner Platinum.

Toyota is offering a hybrid powertrain in its 4Runners for the first time.

toyota bz4x cruise control

Several variants of the 4Runner come equipped with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, pairing a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor. The 326 hp hybrid option is available on five of the nine new 4Runner variants.

The new 4Runner has visual callbacks to earlier generations.

toyota bz4x cruise control

Visually, Toyota says the new 4Runner takes inspiration from the desert racing scene, but its design also recalls the vehicle's earliest models. The 2025 model includes the classic roll-down rear window, as well as a "wrap over" rear-quarter window that extends to the roof, like on the first and second-generation 4Runners from the 1980s.

The Trailhunter model also comes with a heritage grill with vintage-style Toyota lettering.

The 4Runner has several features with rugged outdoor capabilities.

toyota bz4x cruise control

The new 4Runner is banking on its offroad capabilities being a big draw.

New features include increased suspension articulation at the push of a button, as well as adjustable terrain settings to help control wheel spin on mud, dirt, and sand. Though the least expensive models will run on rear-wheel-drive only, partial and permanent four-wheel-drive systems are also available.

Interested in off-road cruise control?

toyota bz4x cruise control

The new 4Runners also boast a low-speed cruise control function, which can help the driver concentrate on off-road steering. A similar feature helps control speed in rough descents, like a rocky hill.

There's a rugged exterior and stylish interior.

toyota bz4x cruise control

Drivers of the new 4Runner can expect a state-of-the-art interior multimedia system, as well as a smart key push-start button and a digital key on select models, which can be shared remotely.

There are racing-style leather seats, with some modern comforts.

toyota bz4x cruise control

The sand brown leather seats are evocative of the "Baja desert racing" aesthetic that Toyota is going for, though with a bit more comfort — including, in the Platinum model, heated second-row seats.

Folding rear seats give drivers plenty of space.

toyota bz4x cruise control

The interior of the 4Runner allows for versatile cargo floor usage, thanks to the tumble seats in the second row.

4Runners also have Toyota's latest safety features.

toyota bz4x cruise control

Whether driving through the woods or the concrete jungle, 4Runner drivers can rely on Toyota's suite of safety features, which include cooperative steering and proactive driving assist, which helps brake while tackling curves and maintains distance from other cars.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 9, 2024) – The instant name recognition that 4Runner has built over the past four decades is undeniable. This legend has long established itself as a North American off-road icon, ready to tackle tough terrain in its way. The all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner stays true to its original concept, as an extremely capable, dynamic, and durable off-roader and will continue to provide owners a window to bigger worlds. The new generation introduces a bold new look and adds new technology, premium materials, options, and safety. In fact, this all-new sixth generation 4Runner raises the bar in terms of go-anywhere capability and high-end refinement. The 2025 4Runner will be built in Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara plant in Japan and will arrive in the U.S. in the fall of 2024.

“This all-new 4Runner has incredible versatility and capability that nicely rounds out our truck family story,” said Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “We’ve sold over 3 million in the 40 years it has been on sale, and this sixth-generation model offers a cool new look and incredible features, yet retains the rugged style and capability our customers love about this icon of adventure.”

Solid Foundation 4Runner is all-new from the ground up and is built on Toyota’s tough TNGA-F global truck platform that is shared with Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. This platform utilizes a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame and features a multi-link coil rear and double wishbone front suspension.

The adoption of the innovative TNGA-F platform not only adds strength, but it also improves the vehicle’s ride comfort and on-road manners. Passengers feel the benefits of this new platform, even when riding in the available third-row. The enhanced frame, paired with the powerful i-FORCE MAX powertrain, allows 4Runner to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Evolving the Legacy “Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation,” says Calty President, Kevin Hunter. “Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner’s go anywhere purpose”.

The Michigan-based CALTY design team spearheaded the design of this all-new 4Runner. Designers pulled inspiration from the past while also focusing on the future. The all-new 4Runner was designed alongside the Tacoma and shares a family resemblance but is unique in its own way. Both share inspiration from the desert racing scene and have a rugged-with-a-purpose appearance. In a nod to the first and second generations of 4Runners, designers were able to bring back the legacy “wrap over” quarter glass, and the popular roll-down rear window remains etched into the vehicle’s DNA. The design team meticulously labored to achieve the ideal interior design. They sought to achieve a vehicle with ease of operation and a functional interface that strikes a pure balance of modern sophistication and capable authenticity. For example, second-row tumble seats help increase 4Runners interior versatility and maximizes cargo floor usage.

i-FORCE Power MAXed This next chapter of 4Runner offers two powerful and efficient turbocharged 2.4 liter four-cylinder powertrains including the i-FORCE engine with 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque that is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited grades will come standard with the i-FORCE powertrain.

4Runner’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is available on TRD Off-Road and Limited, while standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum models. This powertrain pairs the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack that creates a total system output of up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, the most powerful powertrain ever offered on 4Runner.

Trail Ready 4Runner is synonymous with rugged capability. In its latest form, 4Runner continues to add increased capability to an already incredible legacy. The newly available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism increases suspension articulation at the push of a button. This feature allows the vehicle to flex while helping keep tires in contact with the trail. 4Runner raises the bar in another area with up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles. The available Multi-Terrain Monitor system aids the driver allowing them to see potential hazards on the center display.

4Runner will be offered in 2WD, part-time 4WD or Full-time 4WD. 2WD models will feature an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD), and four-wheel-drive models have an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range along with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). An electronic locking rear differential is standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter grades. The Limited is offered with an available a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models, while this setup is standard on Platinum grades.

The Multi-Terrain Select system now functions in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. This offers adjustable settings to help control wheel spin on a variety of terrain such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. 4Runner also adopts the new, quieter CRAWL Control function that acts as a low-speed, off-road cruise control that allows the driver to focus on steering. When traction is extremely limited, the available electronically activated locking rear differential can help split power 50/50 to the rear wheels. Downhill Assist Control is another off-road feature available and helps the driver navigate descents by limiting the speed of the vehicle.

A Grade for Everyone 4Runner expands its grade offering to provide customers with more choices than ever before. Nine grades are available including SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The Trailhunter grade has been added to the line up to allow owners to go further. 4Runner’s capability and durability have made it a fan favorite of overlanders, and now adventure seekers have a turnkey solution with a manufacturer-developed overland rig straight from the factory. Toyota collaborated with a number of off-road component companies to make the fit and finish that much better. For example, the Trailhunter will feature ARB’s Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs, along with a uniquely co-designed ARB Roof Rack. The OME shocks along with the 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires boost up Trailhunter an additional two inches in the front and one and a half inches in the rear. A standard low-profile high-mount air intake sources cleaner air for the standard i-FORCE MAX powertrain. Trailhunter adds protection that includes rock rails and high strength steel skid plates for serious off-the-grid-adventure capabilities. The Trailhunter is also equipped with a heritage grill with bronze “TOYOTA” lettering and an integrated 20-inch LED light bar that is complemented by color selectable RIGID LED fog lamps. A seriously powerful 2400W AC inverter provides juice to two locations in the cabin and the rear cargo area. Trailhunter is ready for customization with other Toyota accessory offerings using three easy to reach auxiliary switches that are pre-wired throughout the vehicle.

The 2025 4Runner introduces its first-ever Platinum grade which offers customers a high-end, luxury experience with all the capability you expect in a 4Runner. Platinum slots above the Limited grade by adding unique black exterior styling elements, heated second-row seats, a standard tow tech package, Head-Up Display and automatic rain sensing wipers.

Latest Tech 4Runner receives Toyota’s latest technology with new screens. A new 8-inch or available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen displays Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, which is designed and engineered by Toyota’s Texas-based Connected Technologies team. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, and pairs well with the available Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output. A USB-C data and charging port is integrated on the right side of the multimedia touchscreen, and dual USB-C charging ports are included in the front row and available for the rear passengers. A 7-inch gauge cluster is standard on lower grades and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard on higher grades.

Smart Key System with push-button start is standard on all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key on select grades connects with compatible smartphones to allow vehicle entry, and vehicle starting (4G network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared with others to give more control over vehicle access rather than giving someone the physical key.

Rugged Choice The all-new youthful and dynamic 4Runner nicely rounds out Toyota’s rugged lineup of tough body-on-frame vehicles. From the full-size Tundra to the iconic off-road legend Land Cruiser, customers now have five fresh trucks to choose from. These vehicles give customers more choice when it comes to finding a vehicle that can keep up with their dynamic lifestyles. They are designed to handle almost anything the elements throw their way, and their incredible capability gives owners the tools they need to get out and discover all the hidden wonders the world has to offer.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Standard All 2025 4Runner models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, Toyota’s suite of active safety and convenience systems. This suite of features includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist is now a part of Toyota Safety Sense. Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) uses the vehicle’s camera and radar, when system operating conditions are met, to provide gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. PDA can also provide gentle braking into curves. Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different circumstances.

Including the addition of Proactive Driving Assist, the Toyota Safety Sense features have been enhanced for TSS 3.0:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has enhanced detection capabilities thanks to new system sensors. It receives enhanced intersection support with improved detection capability in certain circumstances. In addition to pedestrian and bicyclist detection, this system now includes the capability to detect a motorcyclist.
  • Lane Departure Alert will now provide Steering Assist as well as enhanced lane recognition that includes detection of certain 3D objects, like guardrails, that may be used to help define the lane.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will have Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting, from the previously available three. Enhanced vehicle detection allows for the ability to detect more than one preceding vehicle, as well as vehicles in adjacent lanes. This helps the system to provide smoother, more natural speed adjustments, especially when the driver changes lanes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled for it to function. The system requires detectable lane markings in order to function. Like Lane Departure Alert, lane recognition is enhanced over prior TSS generations. In addition to lane centering, this system also helps provide more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes. It works by offsetting the vehicles’ driving path with minor steering adjustments while keeping the vehicle within its lane.
  • An Emergency Driving Stop System is a new function of Lane Tracing Assist. It’s designed to monitor the driver’s inputs, such as steering operation, to determine if they’re inattentive or non-responsive, such as during a medical emergency. This feature is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn’t respond to alerts to take control.
  • Road Sign Assist is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, other available features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.

Beyond Zero Vision As part of Toyota’s diverse portfolio approach toward a carbon-neutral future, 4Runner is the latest hybrid offering in the lineup to wear the Beyond Zero badge. Very soon, Toyota will offer 19 electrified vehicles for customers to choose from. With the additions of Land Cruiser and Tacoma, Toyota will offer 15 hybrid models, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle (BEV), and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai, Toyota provides more choices than any other automaker for customers to reduce their carbon footprint.

Limited Warranty Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against perforation from corrosion for 60 months with no mileage limitation. Hybrid-related components that require repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first from original date of first use when sold as new. The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and is transferable across ownership.

The 2025 4Runner also comes with ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance, for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and 2 years, unlimited mileage of Roadside Assistance.
