Introduction to the Chase Travel

The Chase Travel℠ is an online booking platform for flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, activities, and vacation rentals, similar to an online travel agency (OTA). If you're a Chase Ultimate Rewards® cardholder, you can use points to book travel through the portal — or pay with your card or a combination of points and cash. 

Overview of the Chase Travel and Ultimate Rewards benefits

The Chase Travel℠ offers one of the most straightforward redemption opportunities for your Chase Ultimate Rewards . Chase boasts one of the most flexible and lucrative credit card rewards programs, and points earned on some travel cards are worth up to 50% more when redeemed through Chase Travel℠.

Here's everything you need to know about booking airfare, hotels, and more through the Chase travel portal — and how to make the most of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

What is the Chase Travel portal?

The Chase Travel℠ is an online platform that acts as a third-party travel broker similar to Expedia, Booking.com, Travelocity, or Priceline. Through Chase Travel℠, you can book hotels, flights, rental cars, cruises, and vacation packages. You can choose to pay with one of your linked credit cards, or use your Ultimate Rewards balance to defray the cost. 

You must be a Chase credit card customer to use Chase Travel℠ to book with cash or points — in fact, you can only access the Chase travel portal when you log into your account management page with Chase.

Benefits of using Chase Travel

One of the primary benefits of using Chase Travel℠ is you can spend the rewards points you earn directly on the travel you want without having to worry about dealing with specific hotel or airline loyalty programs. Chase Travel℠ allows you to book travel directly with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, use your credit card to pay, or combine the two.

There are a few other key benefits to understand as well:

You'll still earn airline miles and work toward elite airline status

You won't earn points or elite night credits when you book a hotel stay with Chase Travel℠ because it's considered a third-party booking. However, you can earn airline and elite-qualifying miles on flights booked through Chase, as long as your frequent flyer number is attached to the reservation. (You can usually add that number, as well as your Known Traveler 

Points are worth more on certain Chase credit cards

With a no-annual-fee card like the Chase Freedom Flex® or Chase Freedom Unlimited® , your points are worth 1 cent each toward travel booked through the portal.

But if you have a Chase travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card , you'll get 25% to 50% more value when you redeem your points for travel, plus the ability to transfer your points to Chase airline and hotel partners .

You can combine the points earned on the Chase Freedom Flex® or Chase Freedom Unlimited® with one of these travel cards: Points redeemed through the Chase Sapphire Reserve® are worth 1.5 cents apiece through Chase Travel℠, while points redeemed through the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card are worth 1.25 cents apiece. 

Some Chase cards also offer bonus points for paid bookings you make through the portal. Chase offers lucrative bonus categories on flights, hotels, and car rentals booked through the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, up to 10x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar.

Combining Chase points for increased value

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points between accounts if you hold more than one Chase card. It makes the most sense to pool your points in the account that gives you the best redemption value — for example, if you pair the Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Sapphire Reserve®, moving all of your Chase Ultimate Rewards to your Chase Sapphire Reserve® account will increase the value of your points when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

To pool your points onto one card, log into your Chase online account, navigate to the "Redeem" section for your Chase Ultimate Rewards card, then select the option to combine points in the "Earn/Use" tab:

From there, you can move your Chase points between accounts in any increment.

Points value in the Chase Travel

Certain Chase credit cards offer a bonus for redeeming points through Chase Travel℠. Here's how much your points are worth with each Chase card:

While these redemption rates are generous, you may get even more value by transferring your points to airline and hotel partners since Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth, on average, 1.8 cents apiece based on Business Insider's points and miles valuations .

How to use the Chase Travel

Using Chase Travel℠ is a breeze, but it all starts with logging into your online account management page. From there, you'll click on the right side of your screen where it shows your Chase Ultimate Rewards account balance. 

Once you click on the account balance, you'll have the option to select the card you want to access. And remember, this step can be important because some cards give you more value from your points when you redeem them for travel.

How to book a flight through Chase Travel

Once logged into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account, you'll see different travel options to search for at the top of the page.

To search for a flight, make sure the prompt is on "Flights" and begin searching for the flight you want. Enter your departure airport, destination, travel dates, and the number of passengers.

Once your flight options pop up on the screen, you can filter your results by the number of stops, the airlines you want to fly, and arrival times.

Note that each of your flight options will include a payment amount in points as well as a cash price. 

You can also click on "Details and baggage fees" to find out the cost of carry-on luggage or checked baggage, as well as whether your flight charges any change fees.

When you click "Select" a flight option, you'll see a list of what is and isn't included in the fare you selected. You may also see a note that you can upgrade before you check out.

Once you settle on a flight you want, you'll be taken to the "Trip Details" page that shows the final cost of your flight in points or in cash, as well as a summary of the added costs you may be charged for baggage or change fees.

After you agree to the terms, you'll be taken to a final payment page where you can decide how you want to pay. You can cover your flight entirely in points if you want, but you can also choose to pay with your Chase credit card or a combination of points and your credit card.

During the booking process, add your frequent flyer number to your reservation so you can earn miles on your booking and have your flight count toward elite status requirements. You'll also want to add your Known Traveler Number or Redress number if you have one. However, if you forget this step during booking, you can add your frequent flyer information to your flight through the airline's website.

How to book a hotel through Chase Travel

Booking a hotel through Chase is similarly easy, and you'll find a lot of different types of lodging options available. For example, you'll find properties from major hotel brands, but you'll also find rental condo options and boutique hotels.

To search for a hotel,  enter the destination, dates, and the number of people you want to have in your room. Once you're presented with options, you can filter hotels based on the hotel name you're looking for, the area or neighborhood, price point, guest rating, property type, and more. 

Once again, you'll see a price listed in points and a cash price per night.

These prices do not include taxes and fees, however, so your price in points or cash will be higher by the time you get to the final booking page. Also be aware that the price listed is the lowest you can get for the property, but that better or upgraded rooms and suites will cost more in points.

The major downside to booking a hotel through the Chase portal is that you won't earn hotel points or elite night credits for your stay, because it's considered a third-party booking. There's also a risk that the property won't recognize your hotel elite status or give you the perks you'd normally be entitled to, like late checkout or free breakfast . This shouldn't be an issue if you're booking an independent or boutique hotel, but it's something to be aware of if you're looking for hotel points or status.

You'll have the option to select a hotel you want and a room type at the property you're considering. You can also pay with your booking with points, your Chase credit card, or combine both payment methods. 

How to book a rental car through Chase Travel

You can also book a rental car through Chase Travel℠ using the same steps. Once you log into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account, click on "Cars" and select the destination and dates.

Once you are presented with your search results, you can select the types of cars you prefer, like an economy car or an SUV. You can also filter results based on a price range, the number of passengers you have, the rental car company, and the type of transmission you prefer (manual or automatic), as well as the total area you want to search in. 

Note that, once again, taxes and fees are not included on the initial search page. Instead, they are added to your total cost when you select a rental car. You can also pay for a rental car through Chase with points, your credit card, or a combination of the two.

How to book activities with the Chase Travel

Chase also lets you book various activities through the portal, which they refer to as "Things to Do." Chase activities can include excursions like snorkeling or scuba diving, as well as tours of museums and historic sites. But you can also book more practical options through their activities tab, including airport pickups and other types of transportation.

To search for activities, enter the destination and dates for your trip. You'll be shown a price in points and in cash that does include taxes and fees. You can also filter options based on the type of activity, your interests, and more. Once again, you have the option to pay for activities with your points, your credit card, or a combination of the two.

How to book a cruise through Chase Travel

If you're a cruise enthusiast, you can also book cruises through Chase Travel℠. When you select "Cruises" at the top of the Chase Ultimate Rewards search page, you'll be presented with a list of featured cruises and cruise specials.

You can also search for cruises by destination or cruise line name. Note, however, that only cash prices are listed for each cruise on the portal and that you'll have to call Chase to make a booking.

Either way, you can use your Chase points to pay for all or part of your cruise. Just have your credit card number handy and call their customer service line at 855-234-2542.

How to book a vacation rental through Chase Travel

Chase also offers a selection of vacation rentals including condos, luxury villas, and more. To search, click "Vacation Rentals" at the top of the main page, then enter your destination, dates, and the number of people in your party.

Once you start your search, you'll have the option to filter results based on the local neighborhood you want, star ratings, price range, guest rating, property type, and more. Like hotels through Chase, the price you are shown excludes taxes and fees, but they will be added to your total once you make a selection.

Also be aware that the price shown in your search results is for the lowest-tier option for each property, and that a larger rental or upgraded rental may cost more in points.

When you book vacation rentals through Chase, you can pay with points, your Chase card, or a combination of the two. 

Use the Chase Travel to book Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection properties

If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can book properties within the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection. This list of more than 1,000 properties can be reserved ahead of time, and you'll get extra benefits with each stay such as:

• Daily breakfast for two
• A special benefit worth up to $100
• Complimentary internet access
• Room upgrades when available
• Early check-in and late checkout

One detail to note with this program is the fact that you cannot pay with points. Instead, your online booking will reserve your room, and you'll be charged for the stay when you check out from the hotel. 

Should you transfer Chase points instead?

While you can book travel directly through the Chase Travel℠, many people prefer transferring points to Chase airline and hotel partners. Doing so could let you get more value for each point you redeem , but you'll have to run the numbers to find out for sure.

Here's a good example of how transferring points to a Chase airline or hotel partner can be a better deal, as well as the math you'll need to do to figure this out on your own. Take this one-way flight on Air France from Chicago to Paris, for example, and assume you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card. You're getting 50% more value when you redeem points through the Chase Travel℠ using points on this card. 

If you were to book this flight through Chase Travel℠, you would owe 39,607 points with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, compared with the cash price of $594.10.

However, you could book an award ticket on the exact same flight through Flying Blue (Air France's loyalty program) directly if you transferred your Chase points there first. In this case, the identical flight would set you back 22,000 miles plus $109.44. This means you would transfer 22,000 miles from Chase to your Flying Blue account, and pay the taxes and fees in cash, or by redeeming points for a statement credit to your account.

When you compare, you'll find that booking with miles directly is a better deal. After subtracting the taxes and fees from the cost of booking through Flying Blue, you wind up with a value of around 2.2 cents per mile.

With Chase Travel℠, on the other hand, you're forking over 39,607 points for the same flight, and you're getting a value of 1.5 cents for each point if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. 

Chase Travel portal frequently asked questions

Accessing Chase Travel℠ is simple. If you're a Chase credit cardholder with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you can log in to your Chase online account. Once logged in, navigate to the 'Travel" or "Rewards" section, where you'll find the Chase travel portal. From there, you can search and book flights, hotels, and other travel services using your earned points or card benefits. It's a convenient way to plan and manage your travel adventures.

Chase Travel℠ refers to the travel booking and rewards platform offered by Chase Bank. It's part of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, allowing cardholders to use their earned points to book flights, hotels, car rentals, and other travel-related expenses. Maximizing rewards through Chase Travel

The Chase travel portal offers another way to maximize rewards earned with a Chase credit card. Before you pull the trigger, consider all your options and the value you're getting for your points.

Remember that, no matter which Chase credit card you have, you can use your rewards points in other ways. You can redeem Chase points for statement credits or cash back, or cash them in for gift cards or merchandise. And if you have a premier Chase travel credit card, you can transfer your points to Chase airline and hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio.

However, booking travel through Chase can make your life considerably easier — especially if you don't like dealing with complicated hotel and airline programs. You may not get as much value from your points as you would if you booked a premium flight with airline miles, but the Chase travel portal does offer the flexibility to book the flight you want without any blackout dates or hoops to jump through.

Travel with peace of mind *

When you take to the air or hit the road, we make security a priority. Here are some of the protection services built into your Sapphire Reserve card benefits.

Trip Cancellation / Interruption Insurance

If your trip is canceled or cut short by sickness, severe weather and other covered situations, you can be reimbursed up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for your pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses, including passenger fares, tours and hotels.

Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

Decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your card. Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to $75,000 for theft and collision damage for rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.

Emergency Evacuation and Transportation

If you or a member of your immediate family are injured or become sick during a trip far from home that results in an emergency evacuation, you can be covered for medical services and transportation up to $100,000.

Trip Delay Reimbursement

If your common carrier travel is delayed more than 6 hours or requires an overnight stay, you and your family are covered for unreimbursed expenses, such as meals and lodging, up to $500 per ticket.

Travel Accident Insurance

When you pay for your air, bus, train or cruise transportation with your card, you are eligible to receive accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $1,000,000.

Baggage Delay Insurance

Reimburses you for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing for baggage delays over 6 hours by passenger carrier up to $100 a day for 5 days.

Roadside Assistance

If you have a roadside emergency, you can call for a tow, jumpstart, tire change, locksmith or gas. You’re covered up to $50 per incident 4 times a year.

Account security and protection

Your Sapphire Reserve card is equipped with the enhanced account and purchase protection you deserve.

Zero Liability Protection *

Zero Liability Protection means you won’t be held responsible for unauthorized charges made with your card or account information. If you see an unauthorized charge, simply call the number on the back of your card.

Fraud protection

The bad news is that each type of credit card can be a little different — what counts as travel on the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® card may not count as travel on the Citi Prestige ® Card. The good news is that we’ve already sorted all of it out, so you can easily determine if a purchase will earn bonus points or not.

These 2 cards are favorites among points enthusiasts, partly because of their ability to earn lots of Chase Ultimate Rewards points through their generous bonus categories.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of what purchases count as travel on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, let’s take a quick peek at some of the benefits offered this popular card.

• Car rental agencies
• Cruise lines
• Travel agencies
• Discount travel sites
• Campgrounds
• Passenger trains
• Toll bridges and highways
• Parking lots and garages

Here are some additional charges that count as travel, based on experience and crowdsourced data:

• Southwest Airlines EarlyBird Check-In fees
• Uber and Lyft rides (excluding Uber Eats )
• Online travel agencies like Priceline , Expedia , Orbitz , etc.
• Payments to travel vendors (like a hotel) paid through PayPal via a credit card
• Any items purchased on a cruise ship that are charged to your room (including big-ticket items like artwork purchased during the onboard auctions)

According to Chase, the following types of purchases do NOT count as travel:

• Real estate agents
• Educational merchants arranging travel
• Inflight goods and services
• Onboard cruise line goods and services
• Sightseeing activities
• Tourist attractions
• Boat rentals
• Merchants within hotels and airports
• Merchants that rent vehicles for the purpose of hauling
• Gift cards (unless the merchant is set up to count as travel)
• Points and miles (unless the merchant is set up to count as travel)

You’ll notice that gas stations, while essential for travel, don’t code as travel. Another tricky one is Uber Eats. It used to count as a travel purchase, but now it counts as dining.

Every card network ( Visa , Mastercard , American Express, etc.) assigns codes to each merchant within the network. Merchant codes are assigned according to the merchant’s primary category of goods and services. Chase then groups several merchant codes together to make a rewards category like dining or travel. This is what determines what will or won’t count in a specific rewards category.

There are a few ways to determine if your upcoming purchase will code as travel.

• The second way to double-check a merchant code is by using this tool offered by Visa. You can look up a specific business, but you need to have an address. While this tool is a bit finicky, it can be helpful if you are really unsure of a specific purchase’s category.

Hot Tip: Curious about other rewards categories? Check out the Rewards Category FAQ offered by Chase. Although this doesn’t list specific vendors, you should be able to get a good idea of how your purchase will code.

You’ll be earning a lot of Chase Ultimate Rewards points with your Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred card since the travel category is so broad.

Now that you’ve got all those points, you need to know how to use them. There are 2 main ways to turn your points into flights and hotel stays.

• Redeem your points in the Chase Travel Portal for flights, hotels, and more. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and Ink Business Preferred card, you’ll get 1.25 cents per point in value when you use them in the Chase Travel Portal.
• To get even more value out of your points you can transfer them to one of the Chase transfer partners . Your Chase Ultimate Rewards points will transfer at a 1:1 ratio to lots of different airline and hotel partners. You can then use those points to book great flights and hotel rooms.

In a generally consumer-friendly move, Chase has announced changes to the travel and purchase protection benefits on its consumer credit cards. The bank will also switch its card-based insurance benefits administrator and underwriter to Assurant, a Fortune 500 global business services company. These benefits are currently administered by eClaimsline.

Chase did not release an exhaustive list of cards impacted by these changes, but according to the bank, the update will go live on Oct. 1, 2024, and covers “all brand and co-brand Chase credit cards.”

Affected cardholders will receive a revised guide to benefits outlining the new coverages for their card by Aug. 15, 2024.

What’s changing?

Auto rental coverage.

Coverage limits will change to $60,000 for eligible vehicles with a retail price of $125,000 or less. Currently, this coverage is up to the actual cash value of the rented vehicle. Cardholders will also now have 100 days to notify the benefit administrator of an accident, increased from 60 days.

Cards that will see this coverage revision include (but are not limited to) the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , Chase Freedom Flex® , Chase Freedom Unlimited® , World of Hyatt Credit Card and the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card .

Emergency evacuation and transportation

The service provider will now arrange and provide for emergency transportation for qualifying events. Currently, cardholders need to pay upfront and then file a reimbursement claim.

This benefit is offered on cards bearing the Visa Infinite logo, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the United Club℠ Infinite Card .

Travel and emergency assistance

This benefit is being added to “select products,” according to Chase, and provides legal and medical referrals and access to other travel and emergency assistance services. 

Examples of cards that will carry this coverage include the Chase Freedom Flex® , Chase Freedom Unlimited® , IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and the World of Hyatt Credit Card .

Travel accident insurance

The coverage limit is increasing to $500,000 on “select products” that already offer this benefit but with a lower coverage limit.

Examples of cards that will carry this coverage include the World of Hyatt Credit Card and Chase Freedom Flex® .

Lost luggage reimbursement

This benefit is being added to “select products,” according to Chase, and provides reimbursement up to $3,000 per covered traveler per trip for the cost to repair or replace luggage and personal property that is lost or damaged during air travel.  

Examples of cards that will carry this coverage include the United℠ Explorer Card and the Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card .

Extended warranty protection

The terms of this benefit are changing to $10,000 per claim and a maximum of $50,000 per year. Previously, those same coverage limits applied to the lifetime of the account and did not reset each year. 

Chase has not released which cards will acquire this benefit.

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance

This benefit is being upgraded on the United Gateway℠ Card to cover additional family members and more qualifying reasons for submitting a claim.

To qualify for these travel and purchase protections, you must use your applicable Chase card for the full cost of your purchase. Other purchases will not be protected.

The Tricky Math Behind Booking Trips on a Credit-Card Company’s Travel Site

C hase, American Express and Capital One tout their travel-booking tools for cardholders as a way to maximize rewards and make dream vacations a reality. But are those sites a good deal?

The answer, travelers find, can take some math.

Travelers say differences in price make it tough to determine the best deal. And some grouse that they’re already paying steep annual fees for certain cards.

Will Biesel, a Dallas attorney, pays $550 for his Chase Sapphire Reserve card and says he has found high prices on Chase’s travel portal, such as a $456 American Airlines round-trip to North Carolina that the airline was offering for nearly $100 less. Another trip, on Southwest, cost 65% more on the portal than from the carrier directly, Biesel says.

Credit-card companies’ booking tools often turn up higher fares and room rates than travelers might find on airlines’ and hotels’ own sites, fliers say. Part of the reason is the desire of airlines and hotels to get more travelers booking directly, rather than via third parties such as Expedia or Chase’s travel portal.

With many trips booked for this year, Biesel had hoped to use his credit-card points to offset the travel costs. But often he felt like he wasn’t getting his rewards’ worth on the portal.

“You hope to get value out of that credit card by spending the points wisely,” says Biesel, 28 years old. “It’s harder to justify the total price if you’re not using all the perks.”

Premium credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire and American Express Platinum are geared to the jet-set crowd, and the portals are critical to their appeal. Many of these cards offer cardholders hundreds of dollars in travel credits that can be used only in their dedicated portals. They also entice people to spend their own money, versus their rewards, by offering significantly more points or miles for booking with them.

About 14% of U.S. cardholders typically went to their credit card’s travel portal to research and book trips, according to a 2022 study from the Futurist Group, a payments-industry consulting firm. Over a third of those travelers said they weren’t pleased with the experience.

“The number-one barrier to growth of these portals is the perception that the price is not necessarily the best deal,” Futurist Group founder and CEO Demitry Estrin says.

A Chase spokeswoman said in an email that the company is “committed to providing cardmembers with competitive pricing whether they’re booking with points or cash.”

Why prices vary

Credit-card companies don’t set prices for hotel rooms or plane tickets. Most don’t even operate the travel-booking features connected to their cards—major online travel agencies do. Hopper manages Capital One’s website, and Expedia powers American Express’s consumer-travel site.

Cardholders often find different prices based on where they check.

In some cases, these travelers might not be comparing apples to apples. With airfares, it’s important to check which fare class is advertised when you search. Some websites advertise basic economy—a type of fare with extra restrictions in exchange for a lower price—as the default option. Others display regular economy ticket prices.

Flight and hotel prices also fluctuate based on demand.

Not all websites update their pricing at the same time, says Cory Garner, an independent consultant who led sales and distribution strategy at American Airlines until 2020. If an airline lowers its fares from Chicago to Dallas, that change might not show up immediately for online booking sites.

Separately, airlines have started implementing new technology to distribute their seats to third parties such as online travel agencies, Garner says. That technology lets carriers offer travelers extra options to prospective buyers, including additional categories for seat selection, more easily.

As they push travel agencies and corporate-travel managers to adopt the technology, some carriers have limited which fares remain available on the old distribution systems. Those fares typically cost more, Garner says.

“Credit card travel portals who are using older distribution technology do not have the same access, despite American’s best efforts to make these fares available to them,” an American Airlines spokeswoman said in an email.

Third-party drawbacks

Hotels generally don’t reward points in their own loyalty programs and may not offer other benefits to people who booked anywhere but through the hotel itself, says Adam Morvitz, founder and CEO of point.me, a points and miles search aggregator and booking service.

And when travel snags occur, rebooking can become tougher. In many cases, airlines require travelers to hash out any problems via the site they booked on.

The Chase spokeswoman noted that the company can rebook cardmembers with multiple airline partners when service disruptions arise.

Credit-card benefits

Using a credit card’s travel site to book a vacation can sometimes provide enough advantages to outweigh potential price differences.

Joshua Gellers of Jacksonville, Fla., starts his travel research with Google Flights to get a read on prices. He then checks his credit card’s travel site, factoring in additional rewards he would earn going that route. Credit-card companies sometimes have offers that can boost the rewards rate even higher for customers.

When booking a Sydney hotel last summer, he found booking directly with the hotel was cheaper than his credit-card company’s site. But the rewards offered by the card site swayed him, since their value was greater than what he would save by cutting out the middleman.

Gellers, a professor at the University of North Florida, notes that his tactics aren’t for everyone: “Think about how much extra effort that is for the average traveler.”

Sometimes, credit cards will advertise special discounts on flights or vacation packages only for their cardholders.

Capital One Travel offers price-matching if lower prices are available at the time of booking and free price-drop protection for flights. The site monitors flight prices up to 10 days after customers book. If that itinerary’s price falls, Capital One issues a travel credit of up to $50, with some limitations.

Bank of America, Wells Fargo are under investigation for handling of customers funds on Zelle

(Reuters) - The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is investigating major U.S. banks for their handling of customer funds on the peer-to-peer payments platform Zelle Network, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The probe focuses on JPMorgan  (JPM.N), Bank of America  (BAC.N), and Wells Fargo  (WFC.N), among other large banks, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

JPMorgan last week had disclosed in a filing that it was responding to the CFPB's inquiries regarding Zelle and was considering whether to sue a U.S. consumer watchdog over the agency's inquiries.

Wells Fargo also has previously disclosed in public filings that government authorities have been probing the handling of customer disputes via Zelle.

The proliferation of fraud and scams on Zelle, which is owned by seven major banks including JPMorgan and Bank of America, has drawn attention from U.S. lawmakers including Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren and regulators concerned about consumer protection.

Chase Travel's expanded and rebranded luxury hotel program is now live

The luxury hotel booking engine for Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardmembers is now live.

The Edit by Chase Travel — formerly known as the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection — is now the in-house booking platform for Chase's premium cardholders looking for added elite perks at posh hotels around the world. The offering was first previewed last December as part of the International Luxury Travel Market conference in Cannes, France. As its name might suggest, The Edit adds an editorial component to the platform by noting what a property is best known for and how it syncs up with traveler needs and preferences.

"We're thrilled to bring The Edit by Chase Travel to life just in time for those planning spring and summer travel," said Rena Shah, head of lodging at Chase Travel, in a prepared statement. "From helping to take the guesswork out of travel planning by spotlighting hotels that are hand selected by our in-house experts to bringing cardmembers amazing benefits like the ability to be upgraded, enjoy breakfast for 2 each day of your stay and the ability to earn rewards from Chase Travel and participating hotel rewards programs, The Edit brings a fresh approach to travel planning for today's luxury traveler."

The Edit behaves in a similar manner as American Express' Fine Hotels + Resorts : Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers get elitelike benefits at participating hotels. Breakfast for two, property credits and space-available room upgrades are part of the amenity lineup.

An added bonus for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers who book off The Edit is the ability to earn rewards from both the hotel loyalty program they book from as well as Chase Travel.

On the newly created editorial platform, The Edit will also flag properties under various categories, such as family-friendly resorts, spa or wellness retreats and properties perfect for art lovers, design aficionados or those looking for an elevated culinary experience.

"We are meeting the needs of our card members through new partnerships and programming, and building a brand that is reflective of their passions and lifestyle and you'll see that come through in our shopping experience, photography, content, and more," Shah added.

Navigating The Edit

When you go to book a hotel off Chase Travel, hotels included in The Edit will include the premium platform's logo at the bottom of the listing along with "Hand-selected stays for Chase Sapphire Reserve" next to it.

Once you click on the hotel, you'll find a main header page that reveals the elite benefits that come with your stay. For example, the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown comes with daily breakfast for two, a welcome gift, a room upgrade based on availability, a $100 property credit, complimentary Wi-Fi and early check-in/late checkout based on availability.

You'll then find the various room categories and nightly rates.

When it comes time to pay, you'll have the option to pay with cash or points or a combination of the two.

What's new at Chase Travel

The Edit going live on Chase Travel isn't the only big news for the platform this week. Chase cardholders can also earn up to 8,000 points upon activating and booking multiple travel components, including hotels, flights, car rentals and cruises, by May 31. Further, you can earn an extra 2,000 bonus points as a new booker.

Voyages by Chase Travel, which will offer elite benefits on cruise bookings, is also expected to roll out for Chase Sapphire cardholders later this month.

Chase's 2024 travel trends

Ahead of the launch, Chase provided some emerging travel trends that might fit in with the editorial features of The Edit.

Some of the most-booked hotels off Chase Travel's booking platform for the upcoming New Year's Eve holiday include the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, The Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu, the Fairmont Banff Springs in Canada, The Wall Street Hotel in New York City and The Charles Hotel, a Rocco Forte Hotel in Munich.

Trending properties for next year include The St. Regis Aspen Resort in Colorado; 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (pictured above) in Hawaii; Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Italy; Nobu Hotel Los Cabos in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa in the Cayman Islands.

The Chase report also indicated a clear need for travelers to book ahead, especially for major events, and that they might face competition on premium modes of travel.

Year over year, there is a 47% increase in future bookings for springtime travel in 2024, while fall travel is currently experiencing a 59% increase. There's already a 115% increase in travel bookings to Melbourne, Australia, for the Australia Open, and Salt Lake City can brag about a 39% increase in bookings for dates during the Sundance Film Festival in January. Travel bookings to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl next February are also up by 12% compared to last year.

Travelers aren't being chintzy, either. Chase Travel reports a 40% year-over-year increase in luxury hotel bookings, a 28% increase in business-class ticket bookings and a 14% increase in first-class ticket bookings.

With data like that, one can't help but wonder: What is this recession everyone keeps worrying about?

Bottom line

The Edit, for now, appears to be more of a rebranding than a complete gutting and overhaul of Chase's Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection.

The added editorial categories and descriptions will be a nice user-friendly addition, and the overall program should continue to be a major perk for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers — especially amid a swelling movement of travelers deciding to forgo chasing elite status in favor of being a loyalty free agent .

Who needs a top-tier hotel status when you can stay across a variety of brands and still get perks like free breakfast and upgrades? Of course, it's also nice that you don't have to forgo earning elite nights and points from a favorite hotel loyalty program when you book off The Edit.

After all, who doesn't like to double dip in the rewards and loyalty pond?
