Music | Coachella 2022: Everything you need to know before you go to the festival — or watch from home

valley music travel shuttle stops

While you’re here, don’t forget to sign up for our free newsletter Festival Pass , where we’ll have the best of Coachella and so much more as we head into the 2022 festival SZN.

You’ll get our dispatches from our team out on the field at Coachella and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival , so follow along!

Note: This Q&A full of information and a fair bit of snark is written by Vanessa Franko, one of our editors who has covered every Coachella since 2007. Have other questions she didn’t answer? Email her at [email protected] or hit her up on Twitter during the festival at @vanessafranko .

When is the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival?

Coachella Weekend 1 is happening April 15-17. Coachella Weekend 2 is happening April 22-24.

Where does Coachella happen?

Concert promoter Goldenvoice puts on Coachella at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, where it has taken place since 1999. Fun fact: The first major Goldenvoice show there was a Pearl Jam show in 1993.

The location for your maps app is 81-800 Ave. 51 in Indio, on the border of La Quinta, but many roads close around the fest so pay attention to the signs. If you’re coming in from the 10 Freeway, there will be signs.

Keep an eye on the Coachella site for the maps and the parking. And make sure you pay attention to where you park. You don’t want to get towed and you don’t want to lose your car in the desert night.

Who’s on the Coachella 2022 lineup?

More than 100 artists will play across seven stages . The headliners are Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and the just announced Swedish House Mafia x The Weeknd set since Ye (Kanye West) backed out . Other notable artists on the bill include Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Swedish House Mafia, Danny Elfman (yes, he of Oingo Boingo, “The Simpsons” theme song and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” fame), Grupo Firme, Banda MS, Brockhampton (for what’s reported to be the group’s final performance), Karol G, Carly Rae Jepsen, Fatboy Slim and literally more than 100 others. See the full Coachella 2022 lineup.

Wait, wasn’t Kanye going to be there?

Yeah, but now he’s not . But we have some ideas for who could replace him , though!

Update: Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd are teaming up to replace him.

How can I get tickets to Coachella?

Tickets to Coachella are sold out, but there are ways to get them.

Coachella has a ticket exchange and purchase program through Lyte.com . Those are officially sanctioned and you can get support for them, but there are other places on the secondary market to find passes.

Some other sellers, like Stubhub, offer a guarantee, even though the festival doesn’t offer support.

Stay away from shady sellers who are unverified.

Where should I stay for Coachella?

This late in the game, unless you’re dropping a lot of cash, you’re probably out of luck. Hotels and rentals go fast. However, you can purchase car or tent camping , which starts at $102, before fees. If you’re bringing more friends, you’ll need to purchase a car camping companion pass for $55 for each vehicle.

What time is Harry Styles/Billie Eilish/Purple Disco Machine playing Coachella? When are the Coachella set times coming out?

Set times are usually released the week of the festival. We’ll post them when we’ve got them!

How many stages does Coachella have?

In recent years, the festival has run music seven major stages: the outdoor Coachella stage and Outdoor Theatre; open air tents the Sahara, Mojave and Gobi; the closed (and blissfully air-conditioned) tents Yuma and Sonora.

The headliners play on the Coachella stage. The Sahara traditionally features the largest EDM acts on the bill, and in more recent years, rap and K-Pop. The Yuma is more geared toward house music and usually has a glittering shark-shaped disco ball inside. The Sonora has been a home for most of the up-and-coming rock and punk bands on the bill.

Beyond the seven major stages, there’s also the Do Lab , an EDM oasis with water cannons, usually some aerial artists and always some big surprise guests. ( Did we ever tell you about the time Skrillex showed up ?)

Other installations have also featured performances, like the Heineken House, where Thundercat and Flying Lotus are teaming up this year. There are also musical things happening in the campgrounds, like the Silent Disco.

How can I watch the Coachella livestream?

You can celebrate Couchella again this year with the official Coachella livestream through YouTube at www.youtube.com/coachella . Pluses: A/C and cheaper food/drinks. Cons: You’re not there; no Spicy Pie.

The stream starts at 4 p.m. April 15, which is a few hours after gates open and the music starts. You typically don’t see all of the artists on the livestream, but most of the big names do. There will also be a livestream for Weekend 2, but it typically is more low key than the first weekend.

When we have the YouTube schedules, we’ll post them.

Note that the livestream times can be delayed. Back in 2016, the Guns N’ Roses fans were VERY unhappy that Silversun Pickups was still on the stream when GNR had already started in real life . (On the bright side, I made a lot of new international GNR friends who were very excited for my Twitter updates.)

What’s the weather like at Coachella?

Great question. It can definitely get into the triple digits during the day, but it will cool off into the 60s at night. Some years are more mild during the day, like when it started drizzling in 2012.

For Weekend 1, weather.com says it’s looking like highs of upper 80s into the low-mid 90s as of April 5.

Weekend 2, if history is any indicator, it’s likely going to be inching toward or into triple digits.

Also, be prepared for wind. It kicks up the dust.

What are the COVID-19 rules for Coachella?

You no longer have to be vaccinated or show proof of a negative test to attend Coachella . That being said, you’re going to be around 125,000 people, so…

The festival’s website suggests wearing a face covering to protect yourself from the desert dust. That’s sound advice and it can protect you from germs, too.

What should I pack for Coachella?

My musts: Comfortable shoes and socks, sunglasses (but not your priceless vintage ones), sunscreen (no aerosols allowed inside), mask, hand sanitizer, a hoodie for when it gets cold at night.

Note that there are some changes in what you can/can’t bring this year .

Do you have to pay for parking at Coachella?

If you want regular parking, not at all. There are some parking fees if you want upgraded parking or if you’re paying to camp with your car.

Where are the shuttle stops for Coachella?

Valley Music Travel is running the shuttles. You can see all of the details on their page .

Can I Uber/Lyft/rideshare to Coachella?

Yes , but we’ve heard horror stories about going home for the evening, so plan accordingly.

valley music travel shuttle stops

What can you eat at Coachella?

You can go fancy and have a $375 omakase sushi experience (and yes, Indio is still in the desert), or go more affordable with a slice of pizza from Spicy Pie, a beloved festival staple. We have a list of the notable food and drink names coming to Coachella . Beware that some require you to have a VIP ticket or to purchase a separate meal ticket, like Outstanding in the Field.

That being said, it’s hard to go wrong with tacos wherever you are. We wrote about all of the tacos back at Coachella 2018 .

This year, every stand has to offer at least one plant-based option.

Where can you eat after Coachella is done for the night?

Pre-pandemic, a number of restaurants along Highway 111 extended their hours during the Coachella weekends. There are lots of fast food options. (Our team is partial to In-N-Out, especially if someone can go pick it up before the headliner is done.)

Who are the surprise guests at Coachella?

If we told you it wouldn’t be surprise now, would it?

One I’d like to see is Trent Reznor with Danny Elfman, though.

What’s up with the Coachella parties? Is Neon Carnival happening?

We’ve joked that you can do Coachella without ever stepping onto the festival grounds. ( In fact, we wrote about that once .)

Neon Carnival is happening, yes. There are also some cool Coachella-adjacent shows, including Framework’s In the Desert and Goldenvoice’s Day Club, which both feature Coachella artists.

What’s the deal with those Coachella NFTs?

Well, everyone going gets a free Coachella NFT and you might get a golden ticket that gets you upgrades.

If you want to know about the other ones that went on sale, we wrote about them . We also wrote about how much people paid for the NFTs that come with lifetime Coachella passes . 👀

What’s the most important tip for someone going to Coachella?

Dehydration is serious business. It gets hot, you’re dancing, you’re having fun, it can be a lot. Be sure you’re drinking water. There are refill stations around and you can bring in an empty plastic bottle.

Oh, and after you’ve sufficiently hydrated, it’s good to know about the real, permanent bathrooms across from the Beer Barn.

valley music travel shuttle stops

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen at Coachella?

I could write a book about that. Celebrity sightings are always strange, though. Back in the day at Coachella 2010, I saw Danny DeVito hanging out with the cast of Yo Gabba Gabba . That was weird and delightful. DJ Lance Rock with the Yo Gabba Gabba cast is still one of the most underappreciated sets ever at the fest. And we used to have a pool for who would spot David Hasselhoff first.

The coolest thing was the time Nile Rodgers sat down with us and told stories in the press tent.

Where can I get more updates about Coachella and other festivals?

Why, I am so glad you asked. We have a free newsletter called Festival Pass all about Coachella and other music festivals in Southern California. Here’s how you can sign up .

No train available for Coachella fest yet, but here are some other transportation options

Portrait of Erin Rode

If you’ve been holding out hope for train service from Los Angeles to Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals   this year, you’ll have to wait — the long-awaited train service between Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley is still in the works.

In 2019, the California State Transportation Agency granted $5.9 million to help fund a temporary train platform in Indio during the three April weekends of music festivals, with another $2.9 million allocated from the Riverside County Transportation Commission. In early 2020, the Riverside County Transportation Commission told The Desert Sun that plans weren’t finalized in time to provide train service to the 2020 festivals — which were later canceled anyway due to COVID-19.

If you’re a die-hard train enthusiast (and a night owl), you could still take the train — Amtrak’s Sunset Limited line arrives in Palm Springs from Los Angeles at 12:36 a.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, and departs Palm Springs toward Los Angeles at 2:02 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Of course, you’d need to get a ride to and from the station in Palm Springs from the festival grounds in Indio, and you'd have to leave right after the end of the performances Sunday or wait 48 hours.

RCTC is currently focused on improving this train service with regular trips between Palm Springs and Los Angeles during the day, and year-round (not just during festival season).

“Unfortunately, we had to cancel plans for a special event train, primarily due to the costs involved for providing service for three weekends. We have prioritized the completion of environmental approvals for regular train service to the Coachella Valley which would be operated by Amtrak,” Riverside County Transportation Commission Deputy Executive Director John Standiford told The Desert Sun in an email. The agency hopes to repurpose the California State Transportation Agency grant for that purpose.

“Daily passenger rail service along the corridor would serve the area throughout the year as well as help provide a transportation option for major events,” Standiford wrote.

Until then, we’ve outlined your other options for getting from the LA-area to the Coachella Valley, and for getting to the festivals once you’re in the valley, below:

Take a shuttle

If you’re starting your Coachella weekend with a flight into LAX, Valley Music Travel provides a shuttle with pick up near the airport and return service directly to LAX, for $75 plus fees each way. The shuttle is available to and from Coachella Camping, Renaissance Palm Springs, JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, and La Quinta Resort & Club both weekends, with various departure times from LAX on Thursday and Friday and return shuttles on Monday.

Once you’re in the Coachella Valley, Valley Music Travel also offers an “Any Line Shuttle Pass'' for $84, which provides round-trip shuttle service from a list of over 20 hotels throughout the valley from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. each show day. Return service from the festival ends 60 minutes after the music ends each night.

Hop on a bus

FlixBus still has seats available on its buses between Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley, with times available throughout the day and various departure locations including UCLA, USC, and downtown Los Angeles. Arrival locations in the Coachella Valley include downtown Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Indio, and bus tickets for Coachella Weekend One are currently priced around $49 each way.

Greyhound also offers bus service between Los Angeles and Indio — on Thursday, April 14, for example, Greyhound offers buses from Los Angeles to Indio at 2:30 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 4:55 p.m. and 6:25 p.m., priced at $56. Trip times range from two hours and 40 minutes to three hours and 55 minutes. Tickets are also $56 for return trips from Indio on Monday, April 18, offered at 6:25 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:45 p.m., 1:55 p.m., 3:45 p.m., and 7:20 p.m.

Once you’re here, SunLine offers local bus service on nine routes throughout the Coachella Valley. Route 1 makes stops   in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella, with the closest stop to the Empire Polo Club at Highway 111 and Golf Center Parkway in Indio, about four miles from the festival grounds.

Walk or pedal

If you plan on walking or biking to the festival, pedestrian and bike access is available at these intersections:

  • Avenue 50 & Madison
  • Avenue 52 & Madison
  • Avenue 49 & Monroe
  • Avenue 52 & Monroe

Motorized scooters like Bird and Lime scooters are prohibited at Coachella.

Rideshare options

Rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft will operate at the rideshare stand at Ave. 49 and Monroe Street, from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. Friday through Sunday. From the rideshare stand, take the “Yellow Path” to and from the festival. Shade and phone charging will be available at the rideshare stand while you wait. Expect longer-than-normal wait times, with the highest wait times expected between 12 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. each night.

Uber is expecting a significant uptick in demand for rides, and is “increasing fares across the Palm Springs market during each weekend for the festival,” a spokesperson for Uber told The Desert Sun. Uber is placing a $20 special event surcharge on getting picked up from the festival grounds from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. each Friday, Saturday and Sunday — “100% of which goes to drivers,” according to the spokesperson.

If festivalgoers aren’t comfortable with the longer wait times or increased pricing, they can opt to buy one of the shuttle passes and take a shuttle to an offsite location, then request their Uber ride in an area that “may be less congested,” the spokesperson advised.

Driving to the festival

If you’re driving to Empire Polo Club, Coachella has driving and parking instructions available  on its website , and advises arriving early to avoid delays while parking.

Both free and preferred parking are available from 10 a.m. until 2 a.m. Friday-Sunday.

If you're taking your electric car to the festival, note that there are no EV charging stations available on-site. Coachella has a list of charging stations within 30 miles available here.

Coachella guide

Everything You Need To Know To Experience Coachella Like A Pro

You’ll feel like a festival veteran with these tips.

With festival season in full swing, there’s none more highly anticipated than Coachella. Over two weekends, the desert in Indio, California is filled music, parties, activations, and more, making it a fave for both festival pros and newbs alike.

But with a festival so big, it can be quite difficult to plan everything: how to get there, where to stay, what to do, who to see... That’s where a first-timer’s guide to Coachella comes in clutch, so you can experience the influencers’ paradise like a veteran.

Coachella is ... a place to flex your fashion sense.

The first thing you should know about Coachella is that it’s not only a music festival, but a full experience. In addition to musical sets happening at the festival grounds throughout the weekend, some of the biggest brands in the world — from Kendall Jenner’s 818 Tequila to Revolve — host pop-ups and parties throughout both weekends.

There’s plenty to do in between watching your favorite acts, and Coachella is also a place to flex your fashion sense . If you love getting dressed up, there are tons of opportunities to be adventurous with your wardrobe and beauty looks, like festival queen Vanessa Hudgens .

Below, take a peek at this quick list of all the things you need to think about while planning your dream Coachella experience.

You Have Multiple Options For Getting To Coachella

There are various ways to get to Coachella 2024, including taking a private jet from Aero.

Flying in for the festival gives you a few options: You can either fly into one of Los Angeles’ many airports and drive to Indio, or take connecting flights into the Palm Springs airport, which is significantly closer to Coachella.

From any of those airports, you have a few options for getting out to the desert. Renting a car gives you a lot of flexibility. You can also take a rideshare or book a car from LA to the festival ( Gateway Executive Transportation is a limo service that many LA-based influencers prefer), so it’s up to your preference and whether you’d like to drive.

Valley Music Travel also offers one-way shuttle service to and from LAX and Indio (each direction is sold separately), so that’s an option if you don’t want to drive but also don’t want to worry about booking a car.

If you go with ridesharing, your best bet is to fly into the Palm Springs airport, which is closer to Coachella. However, flights to Palm Springs tend to get very expensive this season to account for the high volume of tourists coming in, and you’ll likely need a connecting flight since it’s a smaller airport.

For a truly bougie experience, Aero offers semi-private chartered jets to fly into Palm Springs starting at $975 one way.

Festival atmosphere at Coachella 2024, which you can experience like a pro with this guide.

Choose A Hotel Or Airbnb That Matches Your Coachella Vibes (& Budget)

There actually aren’t many places to stay in the Coachella Valley area. You’ll find more options in the surrounding towns, including La Quinta, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs, which are about 20 minutes, 25 minutes, and 35 minutes from the festival site, respectively. (Keep in mind that traffic during the festival can get get pretty bad, so those estimated driving times could potentially double.)

These towns have plenty of options for hotels near Coachella, or if you have a big group traveling together, you’ll also likely be able to find house rentals that may be more economical than booking individual rooms.

Palm Springs hotels are known for their luxurious approach to wellness.

Palm Springs hotels are known for their luxurious approach to wellness, coupled with the city’s love of mid-century decor and stunning desert and mountain views. The Ace Hotel & Swim Club is a frequent favorite, especially for young festival-goers. The retro interiors and giant pool make it a fun place to hang out, even when you’re not attending the festival.

For a more upscale, relaxing experience away from the energy of the festival, the Moroccan getaway-inspired Korakia Pensione will make for a beautiful retreat while you recuperate from your festival activities.

If you’re up for a longer drive and want to get out of the central Coachella Valley area, opt to stay in Joshua Tree or its surrounding towns instead. Central Joshua Tree (including Pioneertown) is about an hour away from Coachella, while neighboring town Twentynine Palms clocks in at about an hour and a half.

The Joshua Tree area offers an escape that Angelenos frequently take advantage of, and will give you the full desert experience. Note: Rideshares might be a little harder to book in this area, so this is a better option if you’re planning on renting a car.

For a private retreat for up to four people, book your stay at Arro Dunes in Twentynine Palms. It’s a peaceful getaway that truly feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere, perfect for unplugging after a long day of dancing and walking around the festival.

Parking Comes With Your Pass, But There Are Other Options As Well

There are a few different avenues you can take for getting to and from Coachella once you’re in the desert. If you are renting a car, it’s pretty easy to drive from your accommodations to the festival. The traffic can be quite heavy, especially as you get closer to the festival site, but it’s a great option if you like the flexibility of having your own mode of transportation.

All festival passes include access to the general parking lot, or you can buy preferred parking access for the whole weekend if you want to be closer to the entrance. Please remember to enjoy the festival responsibly if you choose to drive.

Getting to Coachella is fairly easy (there’s a designated drop-off zone).

Ridesharing is very readily available as well, especially if you’re staying in one of the festival’s surrounding towns. Getting to Coachella is fairly easy (there’s a designated drop-off zone), and getting home is actually pretty seamless as well.

All of the drivers line up in a big waiting area and passengers get in line and call a car; your rideshare app will then give you a code. Once you get to the front of the line and are assigned a car, you give the driver your code and your destination is put into their app — this way, you don’t have to worry about searching for the right car.

Valley Music Travel also offers Any Shuttle passes, which stop at various local hotels in the area and run frequently throughout the day and night to get attendees to and from the festival. Even if your hotel is not on the company’s list, the shuttles will get you much closer so you can walk or rideshare back to your accommodations.

Remember To Pack The Festival Essentials

Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to bring in any outside food or drink , so keep that in mind when you’re grocery shopping for the weekend. You are, however, allowed to bring in a refillable water bottle , provided that it’s empty upon your arrival (it just has to be 40 ounces or less and can’t be made of metal or glass).

Not being able to bring in your own food just means that you get to enjoy the plethora of food vendors available at the festival — and there are plenty (albeit, it could get expensive).

Festival-goers can buy food vendors and food trucks while at Coachella 2024.

Stands and trucks are scattered throughout the festival grounds so you can grab a quick bite on the go in between acts, but if you want to sit down for a second, stop by the Indio Central Market , which is a huge tent featuring over 15 different restaurants. (The best part is, you get to sit in the shade while you eat.)

For anyone camping at the festival (or don’t have a car and just want to take advantage of it), there’s a free supermarket shuttle that runs from the campgrounds to a nearby grocery store so you can pick up the essentials. This is a great chance to pick up things you forgot to pack as well, like sunscreen.

People at the 2024 Coachella festival use these tips to experience Coachella like an expert.

Other Coachella packing essentials that TikToker @sheadurazzo suggest you bring in your backpack are:

  • Hydration packs like Liquid I.V.
  • A pack of gum
  • Cheap sunglasses
  • Plenty of lip balm
  • A portable charger

As far as your outfit goes, you’ll also want to bring a sweater to throw on at night when the desert gets chilly, and bring a comfortable pair of shoes to change into since you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

You could always take OOTD pics in your cute shoes at your hotel or Airbnb before changing into your fave pair of sneakers to wear for the rest of the day. Both Dixie and Charli D’Amelio wore their own D’Amelio Footwear shoes to Coachella in 2023, and they passed the no-blister test.

Bring a reusable water bottle to Coachella.

Plan Ahead To Save Money During Coachella

Between festival tickets, flights, lodging, and food and drink, the expenses of going to Coachella can really add up.

A great way to save money during the festival is to go grocery shopping at the beginning of your weekend so you can make breakfast (and maybe even lunch) at home. Most festival days don’t start till around noon, so you can enjoy your food from the comfort of your accommodations. Making breakfast means you only have to buy one meal at the festival. (Pro tip: Keep some leftovers in the fridge for when you get home — you’ll be grateful you did.)

You should also remember that rideshare platforms activate surge charging for the entire weekend, and taking cars everywhere will probably be one of your bigger expenses. If you’re up for driving, renting a car can be the more economical option, especially if you’re in a group and can split the cost. However, gas is always more expensive in California (especially these days). For that reason, opt for a smaller, more fuel-efficient car.

Festivalgoers show off what it's like to attend Coachella.

For accommodations, Airbnbs and hotels will probably run you around the same price because everyone inflates their prices for the festival weekend. But the plus side of Airbnbs is that you usually have access to a kitchen, and some even have private pools. If you’re going in a group and want to bunk together, renting out a house can help save you money in the long run, and provide you with more space than you’d get at a hotel.

Now that you’re armed with the basics, it’ll be easy for you to get to and around Coachella. All you need to do is throw on some fringe and glittery eyeshadow , and you’re ready to dance the weekend away.
