Full carbon frame, quality brand/model running gear

* noisy gear/chain * the seat is unbelievably uncomfortable. I thought it was just me not being used to to road bike seats, but after 3 weeks of riding to and from work every day, I'm starting to think its the seat and not my soft butt!

I am completely new to road bikes, so I've still got a lot to learn. However, the Trek 5000 is a great bike. Also, I was happy to get a fully composite bike for the price I paid. I have had a little trouble with the chain and gears...two links were 'sticking' together, causing the gears to jump. Also, the chain/gears seem to be making quite a bit of noise...maybe I need to make some adjustments. The only other thing is that the seat is REALLY causing me some significant discomfort. I will most likely change it.

Similar Products Used:

I've never owned a road bike before

lightweight, componentry is very good, handles well, absorbs road vibrations well

wheel alignment. I had to "true" the wheels less than a month since a bought it

I bought the bike for $1650. I've ridden it several times and I can tell it is way easier riding than my trek pilot 1.0. A great buy for someone who likes riding a lot, whether alone or in grp rides.

Carbon frame smooths out the road bumps, especially after 3+ hours. Drivetrain is very smooth.

The plastic adjusters - replace these if you do any serious riding. Shifting takes some breaking in but gets better. The seat is only there for test-driving, it is not a serious seat and should be replaced, the tires are also very poor - your LBS should let you pay the difference and upgrade to real tires.

Have put 450km on this bike so far, am very impressed with the way the frame absorbs the bumps in the road. It's significantly lighter then my other bikes and on gentle inclines it feels like it is trying to speed up. This is my first 'serious' bike, I put on about 200km+ a week riding. The other day though, 1/2 way through a 100k ride in the hills the front derailleur adjustment knob/housing snapped in half and left me stuck in the 39t ring for the last 55km... that was not fun so my LBS replaced them both with aluminum Dur-Ace ones that are basically indestructible, and for $6 I think I will call it a good upgrade. The 105 shifters can be sluggish sometimes but I will give them more time and perhaps the summer heat will get warm them up. The Cane-Creek brakes are 'ok', they certainly stop me so I can't complain. Was going to go with the Trek 2100 but my budget got increased slightly so I got this one, very glad I did. Wished I could have sprung for the Madone but hey, can't have everything.

Steel Norco Tri bike, misc steel road bikes. Test drove the Trek 1000, a Giant and the Trek 2100.

Ultegra derailleurs are rare on any bike this price, not to mention a carbon framed bike. This frame is every bit as good as the US made Trek frames

The saddle is the most uncomfortable thing I have ever ridden. The second and third being different style Bontragers. Why can't these guys figure out how to make a saddle? The wheels are fairly heavy.

There is nothing particularly special about this bike, other than it does everything well. Of course the price was great on clearance. The wheels are probably a little heavy if you plan on actually racing, it is perfect for the recreational rider who does 100 to 150 miles per week and an occasional 100 mile charity ride. The frame handles chip and seal pavement like butter, yet is pretty stiff and corners like it is on a rail.

Pinarello Veneto, Schwinn Varsity, Trek 1000, Specialized Allez Expert

Nice frame for the cash. Better built-up then stock.

A little flexy but I would rather have comfort over stiffness.

I purchased the 2004 120 Model off ebay and I love it. I built it up with: Complete Dura-Ace kit, including rims, Cont. GP 4000 Tires FSA Carbon Bars and Post Easton EC70 Fork Easton EC90 Stem Garmin 305 Edge computer. I got my around 16.4 lbs and could not be happier. I log around 5K every summer so only time will tell with the durability.

Orbea Esk Team Lemond Toumalet Trek 2200

Light, silky-smooth, great shifting, comfortable, great power to pedal transfer

Durability-that's it

The bike is smooth, like your on air. If your looking to get more competitive, but don't have a sponser this is a great bike for the money. I have had problems with durability however. One my first 5000 I actually snapped my rear derailer in half. Lucky it was still under warrenty and I got a brand new one. However, since then I have thrown the back tire allignment off several times, this is not hard to fix, but can take you off the road for a few days, which I hate! Overall, though I would say this is one of the best bikes for the money, and my favorite bike I've ever had. If your not a big power sprinter like myself you'll probably never have these problems. I would recommend the buy, get out there and ride.

Trek 1000, Trek 2200

Ride smoothness and comfort of the frame also the easy ues of the Ultegra components.

Had some problems with the bb and the chain coming off until I changed to Ultegra and Dura Ace components.

I brought a 2005 Trek 5000 with the OCLV 120 carbon frame, the fortunate thing was my fork was OCLV 110. I contacted Trek about this, and they stated they were out of stock with the Bontrager forks so some 5000's had the benefit of getting the 110's. I replaced the 105 components with all Ultegra except for the front derailler which is a Dura Ace. My bike shop distributor was out of Ultegra front deraillers, so they gave me a Dura Ace for a couple of dollars more, for what I would of paid for the Ultegra. This is a great bike for the money, and my first carbon bike. This is a easy ride for me @ my age, and I haven't had the chance to do any distant riding, but riding through Stone Mountain Park, the 5000 is a joy.

Raleigh Grand Sport with Reynolds tubing my old bike I purchased back in the 70's and a Cignal with Shimano components that I purchased in the early 90's.

Inexpensive Carbon Fiber Frame - makes carbon affordable. Reliable parts you can upgrade as you see fit without having to rush out and do it out of necessity.

None. If you are choosing between this and an Aluminum Frame with better components, get this and upgrade when it makes sense financially. These parts won't let you down - especially if you get it tuned regularly.

I absolutely love this bike! I couldn't recommend it more highly. I am new to the sport. I am a former college soccer player with 3 ACL Knee Reconstructions and 1 Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - in other words a total mess. I got absolutely addicted to cycling on a 15 year old Cannondale Aluminum Bike with tube shifters while dating a cyclist I am now married to. The Trek 5000 TCT was my first step into Carbon Fiber. It is an unbelievable difference! I'll ride about 200 miles a week and pound the heck out of the bike, but even on mile 200 I feel like I am riding through a field of butter it is so soft! Great to climb with! For someone looking for an inexpensive way to get into a carbon frame I couldn't recommend this more highly. I have had no problems with the Shimano 105 and Ultegra Mix along with the Bontrager Crank - and like I said I really ride it. The bike is light and it loves to climb (as do I)! In fact I found myself almost never in the small ring on many of climbs I would fight up before on my old Cannondale. One upgrade I would recommend however is the wheels. I had no problem with the Bontrager Select Wheels it came with, but when at the recommendation of my local shop I upgraded to the Bontrager X Lite Wheels it felt like I bought a whole new bike! So that's the first upgrade I would save my money to make if you want to go to the next level. The frame I am riding is the TCT Carbon frame from the 2005 model. I love it. I know it is not the OCLV Carbon, but if I had to choose between OCLV and Aluminum I could not have afforded the Carbon Frame. Plus I figure if a couple hundred grams really is the difference between me and someone else in a race - I'll just train harder, eat better and leave my cell phone in the car. I, for one, am so glad Trek made this more affordable Carbon Fiber Frame. I wouldn't be on Carbon Fiber without it! Also I should thank Bike Line in Warminster where I bought it. Jerry, the owner is great. He's helped me make all of the right decisions with regard to buying this bike and any upgrades. And the shop as one of our sponsors has significantly helped us financially to make this stuff affordable. Find a shop that genuinely helpful and realistic with what you can afford. The one final thing I do like about this bike is that it gets you into carbon at a reasonable price and gives you the chance to upgrade without needing to change your frame. I have changed my cassette to an 11-23 Ultegra Cassette without spend much. I am looking to maybe change the fork (which is the same carbon fork on the Trek 1000) for a couple hundred - just to reduce a little weight definetly not because I had a problem with it; it is solid. I also may change the crank, even though again I've had no problems with it, to a Dura-Ace or Ultegra when the money is there just to help get a little more power. The good thing about this bike is that it will certainly do the job - even on a competitive level - and it leaves room to upgrade as you like without leaving you feeling like you have to!

Cannondale.

This bike climbs wonderfully and descends even better. You will not experience the "shake" in descent as with lower-quality bikes.

Stock BB is pathetic. It will click and chirp and drive you nuts. Replace the saddle (cf. fizik aliante) as the stock saddle is uncomfortable.

I have ridden this bike nearly every day since my purchase two years ago. I have logged 7500 miles on it and it has taken it like a champ. I have had minor issues with it, as would be expected from the amount of miles. The first disaster (ripped out RD hanger) was rectified by my LBS. The second disaster left me a bit upset. The metal "chip" on the driveside of the chainstay came off (I do not know how) and I lost my chain and it drilled through the carbon fiber. A little epoxy injected into the frame fixed that. I give this bike a 5 for value as it has endured MUCH abuse. I give it 4 for overall quality because of the small problems involving the chainstay protector, etc.

Entry-Level Fuji

Color scheme on the 2005 is beautiful! Lightweight 17.5lbs Stiff Same great Trek geometry as the Madone's OCLV 120 quality for under $2,000

Bottom Bracket sucks! Ticking Noise Bontrager Crank - heavy, flexy, and inefficient Ultegra/105 Mix Bontrager Race Wheels - Heavy, Heavy, Heavy! Get Race Lite or Ksyrium SL's Bontrager Seat stinks, replaced ASAP. Don't get the 2006 - up models. They are NOT American made and use the cheaper and heavier TCT Carbon. Crappier components too. And the color is gay!

Excellent Carbon Fiber bike. This is a great entry-level CF bike for someone who doesn't want to spend over $2,000. Lightweight, stiff, and good components. Now Components... The bontrager crank stinks. It's soft of flexy, doesn't shift too well, and is 200 grams heavier than the Ultegra. The bottom bracket also stinks. I hear constant clicking sounds coming from the BB and it will also vibrate at very high speeds when on the 53x12 chain combo. I am going to replace it with an Ultegra Double with Ultegra BB. I'm also not too happy with the Ultegra/105 mix on the components. The Front Derailleur and Brakes are 105 so I will soon replace it with Ultegra. Otherwise, this bike is a great deal and has potential to perform as well as the Madone series bikes. The bike is definitely a head turner and occasionally gets compliments. Wish it had the puppy effect on girls.

Trek 5000 OCLV - How do I date?

  • Add to quote

Can anyone tell me where to look on my just-purchased, used Trek 5000 OCLV to know it's year of manufacture? It has the epoxy bonded Aluminum forks.

I can't help you with decoding trek serial numbers to get you an exact year, but I seem to recall they were being sold around 1989 to 1990 time frame before Trek abandoned monocoque frames for a couple years. Check yours very carefully for cracks, and if you don't know the history or it has been repainted, I'm not sure I'd want to ride it. Most 5000's cracked/broke. Trek, Colnago and Kestrel were still learning a great deal about making monocoque frames in those days, with Kestrel.

Thanks for the reply. My reading around seemed to indicate the OCLV models were later than the 1st attempt 5000's, which is why I'm struggling to come up with a manufacture date. Regarding condition, it came gently used by a friend who has owned it a fairly long time, and seems to be in excellent, low mileage condition. Also came with Spinergy Rev X wheels.

Help? I took a picture of the bike. After having seen some pictures of the 1989 Trek 5000, I'm inclined to think this is not one of those. However, I understand the differences between the 5xxx models over the years are almost all in the components, not the frame. PO swapped out the Bontrager wheels for these Spinergy Rev X's. Any suggestions on how to determine a year of manufacture is appreciate

trek tct 5000 review

You could call Trek and give them the serial number. They should be able to tell you when the bike was built. Nice looking bike, BTW.

Where can I find a serial number? I don't see anything on the bottom bracket.

I took the bike to the local Trek store and they directed me to look on the rear dropouts for the numbers. I found the numbers. 68334-3R on the right side, and 58334-3 l on the left. I was surprised they didn't match, who knows, maybe I just can't read. Can anyone point me to a list of serial numbers so I can figure out what year this bike is?

Call 920-478-2191 on Monday. Ask for Customer Service. Ask them to look up the SN (it's probably a 5 or 6 -- they are hard to read) and answer your question.

History of Kemerovo Oblast

People began to settle in what is now the Kemerovo region several thousand years ago. The indigenous peoples of the region were Shortsy and Teleuts. In 1618, Russians founded Kuznetsky stockaded town in the south of the present region to protect Russian lands from the raids of the Mongols and Jungars. In 1698, Mariinsk was founded.

In 1721, Mikhailo Volkov found “burning mountain” (a burning coal seam) on the banks of the Tom River and thus became the person who discovered the Kuzbass coal deposits. Industrial development of this land started at the end of the 18th century.

During the 19th century, the territory of the Kemerovo region was part of the Tomsk province. During this period, the first industrial enterprises appeared here: Tomsk ironworks, Gavrilovsky and Gurievsky silver plants, Suharinsky and Salairsky mines. Construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the main reasons for the rapid development of the local industry.

More historical facts…

In Soviet times, the region became part of the West Siberian krai, and then - Novosibirsk oblast. The development of the coal, metallurgical and chemical industries continued: Kemerovo Coke Plant, Kuznetsk Metallurgical Plant, a lot of new mines. The workers’ settlements built near the industrial enterprises quickly obtained the status of towns: Kiselyovsk, Osinniki, Krasnobrodsky, Tashtagol, Kaltan, Mezhdurechensk and others.

During the Second World War, this region was a major supplier of coal and metal. More than 50 thousand tanks and 45 thousand aircraft were produced using steel from Novokuznetsk. 71 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Kuzbass from the occupied regions, most of them remained in the region after the war.

In 1943, Kemerovo Oblast became a separate region that included 17.5% of the territory and 42% of the total population of Novosibirsk Oblast. After the war, the region continued to grow rapidly. On September 18, 1984, about 100 km from Kemerovo, a peaceful underground nuclear explosion was carried out, the power of the explosive device was 10 kilotons.

In the 1990s, the region’s economy declined. However, by the end of the 20th century, there were some positive developments - the development of the coal industry in the first place. Special attention was paid to the development of open-pit coal mining, as a more effective and safe way.

Kemerovo Oblast - Features

Kemerovo Oblast is one of the few Russian regions that has a recognized and well-known alternative name “Kuzbass” - the abbreviation of “Kuznetsk coal basin” occupying a large part of the territory of the region.

It is the most densely populated part of Siberia. The length of the region from north to south is about 500 km, from west to east - 300 km. Russians make up more than 90% of the population. There are small nations of Shortsy, Teleuts, Siberian Tatars who have preserved their cultural traditions.

The climate is sharply continental with long cold winters and warm short summers. The average temperature in January is minus 17-20 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 17-18 degrees Celsius.

Today, about 86% of the population of Kemerovo Oblast lives in cities and towns making it one of the most urbanized regions of Russia. The largest cities are Kemerovo (548,000), Novokuznetsk (540,000), Prokopievsk (185,000), Mezhdurechensk (95,400), Leninsk-Kuznetsky (91,600), Kisilyovsk (83,700), Yurga (79,700), Belovo (70,100), Anzhero-Sudzhensk (65,700).

Sheregesh, a village located at the foot of Zelenaya Mountain in Tashtagol district, is one of Russia’s most popular ski resorts. The ski season lasts from November to May. Kuznetsky Alatau Reserve and Shorsky National Park are the main natural attractions.

Kemerovo Oblast plays a significant role in Russian industry. The following mineral resources are mined here: coal, gold, silver, iron ore, manganese ore, aluminum, nepheline ore, lead, zinc, barite, quartz, limestone, clay, dolomite, sand.

[13] Joseph Stalin 's rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union transformed the sleepy town into a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s. It merged with Sad Gorod in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, the city was known as Novokuznetsk and between 1932 and 1961 as Stalinsk ( Ста́линск ), after Stalin. As a result of de-Stalinization , it was renamed back to Novokuznetsk .

A friend sold me this bike recently. It's been great, but seemed to need a little love . I took it to my local Trek store and they suppose the labor, parts, repair will be around $450. I have a Trek TCT 5000 - probably about 5 years old - which I've been using for sprint triathlon and a few sportives and am looking at either upgrading some of the components.
