Advantages and Disadvantages of School Trips

Every kid likes day away from school. And when that day involves hiking through the woods, touching starfish or checking out the dinosaur exhibit at the local museum, it's a win-win for kids, parents and staff. That's why a school field trip is a common option for schools to expand their students' learning experience. A well-organized school trip can be fun for students and give teachers a chance to conduct a lesson without the limitation of a classroom. But with the positives come the negatives. It's important to keep in mind the inherent risks in planning a trip. For a school trip to work, it needs to meet both the learning requirements of students and safety requirements set by the school.

1 Advantage: Hands-On Learning

School trips are typically designed to support a student’s classroom learning experience. A school trip is an ideal place to allow the student to see real-life applications of academic lessons. Moreover, some school trips integrate actual assignments for students to investigate during the trip; for example, in a physics class outing, students may be asked to estimate factors such as velocity, time and distance for a roller coaster ride in an amusement park.

2 Advantage: Community Interaction

Schools separate the student from the rest of the world to create a highly controlled academic environment. School trips put the students back into the community to see the value of their learning. These types of trips are comprehensive in nature; instead of addressing any specific subject, the trip puts students in real-life scenarios and requires dealing with other people. For example, a school trip to help a homeless shelter for a day teaches students the value of charity and allows students to apply different skills such as service, proper communication and problem-solving.

3 Disadvantage: Opportunity and Actual Cost

School trips are almost always more expensive than their in-class learning. Teachers typically need a very good reason to propose a trip – the trip has to give a type of learning that is not achievable in a classroom setting. Actual costs can pile up quickly: venue reservation, gas and possible boarding costs. Moreover, trips usually take a day at least, weeks at most. This absence from class means missed days of in-school learning, which may put a teacher behind schedule.

4 Disadvantage: Liability

In the event of an emergency during the trip, the school is commonly held liable for any harm that happens to a student. The teacher, bus driver and parent chaperones are ultimately responsible for the safety of every student at all times. In preparing for a trip, the school needs to take measures to minimize the chance of anything going wrong. A common method is to require a signed permission form; this typically contains a parent’s signature but can also note other important factors, such as the trip agenda, emergency contact numbers, a list of current medications and notes regarding allergies.

Michigan student dies 'suddenly' on school trip to robotics competition in Texas

A Michigan community is mourning after a student died suddenly while on a school trip to a robotics competition in Texas last week.

The student "suddenly passed away," Lake Orion High School confirmed with USA TODAY Tuesday, but did not identify the student. The school is located in Orion Township, about 40 miles north of Detroit.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community," superintendent Ben Kirby said in a statement sent out to the student body on Friday, obtained by USA TODAY.

"Today, Friday, April 19, one of our current high school students suddenly passed away. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends," the statement continued.

Officials have not released cause of death.

The school's principal, Dan Hass, informed parents that the student was attending the Robotics World Championship, according to reporting by the Oakland County Times .

“Our hearts are very heavy as we mourn this loss," Hass said, per the outlet. "We will be ready to meet the needs of our students and staff Monday morning.”

Kirby noted in the statement that Lake Orion High School and Lake Orion Community Schools have crisis teams that will be ready to "help with the needs of students and school personnel."

"We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to support our high school students through this tragedy," Kirby shared.

Lake Orion High's robotics team was attending the FIRSTS robotics world championships in Houston, Texas that ran April 17 through April 20, according to the competition's website.

Support has poured in from other robotics teams across the country.

"Everyone on f(x) robotics sends their love and support to all @firstteam302 team members, their families, and the entire Lake Orion community as they get through this incredibly difficult time. #wearealldragons ," a North Carolina team wrote.

"4362 would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of the families, students, mentors, and coaches on @firstteam302 we our all here for you. #morethanrobots #wearealldragons ," wrote a Michigan team.

A West Virgina team said it is "grieved by the fact FIRST has lost a member of its community."

"This is a tragic time for everyone associated with team 302 and the FIRST community," an Idaho team shared.

Students use study abroad trip to focus on food security in South Africa

Virginia Tech students worked in communities across Cape Town.

The two greenhouses Isaac Turpin helped install at an elementary school outside Cape Town, South Africa, as part of a winter break study abroad were the culmination of everything he'd learned through his Pathways minor, global food security and health. 

For 900 students at Encotsheni Primary in the Khayelitsha township, the improved garden will provide fresh food in the cafeteria, an extended growing season, and a hands-on curriculum in life sciences. 

“Not only was this the greatest experience I’ve ever had as a student,” said Turpin, a senior majoring in international trade and development, “I think this was the greatest day of my life.” 

A dozen of the 14 students who traveled to South Africa were part of the global food security and health minor housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences . Ozzie Abaye, professor in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences , led the trip along with Mark Reiter, professor of soils and nutrient management at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center , and Peter Ziegler, research assistant professor in the college.

“I think it’s very important for students to understand that what they’ve learned in the classroom can be applied globally and that their work has value,” Abaye said. “These students now understand that they’re part of a global community and have built relationships during this program that will be part of their lives moving forward.” 

The students worked in Cape Town, a city of contrasts where microclimates are measured in feet of elevation and huge disparities in wealth and poverty are separated by just a few kilometers. Their work, which focused on community service and food security, resulted from months of planning and dialogue with their South African partners and hosts.  

Working in small teams, the students also designed projects for an orchard and garden for a school for deaf and hearing-impaired children, created interpretive materials for a community garden and after-school program, and led a lecture on soil health at a demonstration farm for regenerative land management.  

Designed to increase access and affordability

“We know study abroad can be a great experience for students, but we also know there are a lot of barriers to participating,” said Stephen Biscotte, assistant provost for undergraduate education and a faculty member on the trip. “So part of this trip was to rethink how we design international programs, so more students can take advantage while getting credit for a Pathways General Education minor .” 

Unlike semester-long study abroad programs, this trip took place for 14 days during winter break so it wouldn’t interfere with course planning for students with demanding schedules. The shorter winter trip was also more affordable. Experiences like these are also part of Virginia Tech Advantage , a university commitment to offer broad educational opportunities to undergraduate students from Virginia who have financial need.

“I always knew I wanted to study abroad but I was never able to make it happen financially,” said Evan Stanfield, a senior horticulture major with minors in global food security and health and agribusiness management and entrepreneurship. “I work three jobs - two on campus and one off campus - so having this trip happen over winter break meant those jobs would be there for me when I got back to Blacksburg and didn’t create a situation where I’d have to pay for housing in addition to my lease for the semester.” 

Career development

The trip also allowed students to see different models of urban agriculture, mixing entrepreneurism and social activism, adding depth to their undergraduate experience.

During a visit to the Observatory neighborhood, the students helped upgrade a small citrus and apple orchard in the garden of the Mary Kihn school for deaf and hearing-impaired children. The garden provides fresh produce for school meals and serves students who come from under-resourced communities in the city’s surrounding townships. 

The school grounds are headquarters for Urban Harvest, a company that has installed over 500 gardens, many of which grow fresh produce for school cafeterias. 

“We don’t sell any produce. We’re an edible garden service, helping people grow their own food in many contexts,” said Ben Getz, the company’s founder and a local partner for the program. “Our community gardens not only teach learners about growing food, which they do mostly through osmosis, they provide important meals with nutrition they may not get elsewhere.”

Urban Harvest’s clients range from large, downtown Cape Town corporations with rooftop gardens to small, socially conscious projects in underserved communities. The novel business model, called social entrepreneurship, leverages relationships with companies such as Woolworth department stores, ABSA financial services, and the Shoprite groceries chain to fund projects and community development. 

For example, the garden at the Mary Kihn school is supported by a Cape Town supplement company that has paid for the installation and maintenance of four school gardens in the city.

The semester-long work with Getz, along with the site visit, allowed students to expand their vision of possible career paths. 

“Eventually I want to pursue development economics, namely partnerships between the public and private sectors,” said Miru Yim, a graduate student in agricultural and applied economics. “Here they’re partnering with schools, their own client base, and the government, so this was a great opportunity to see how all those things can be integrated into a successful program to tackle food insecurity.”

Students as teachers

For two students, the program in South Africa was an opportunity to apply and share everything they’d learned in the classroom and on the soil judging team in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences. 

Joe Paterson and Grace Bartlett, both members of the soil judging team, led a talk about the soil health of the operation, which led to a conversation with farm staff about farm regenerative programs.

The students and faculty spent two days at the Living Soil Community Learning Farm in a regenerative land-management project that serves as a public and private partnership in the Lynedoch Valley, about 25 miles east of Cape Town. 

The 4-acre farm is a partnership between Woolworths department stores, Spier vineyards, and a local nonprofit organization, the Sustainability Institute.

“The past two semesters I’ve been on the soil judging team and gone to the past two competitions, which gave me a lot of hands-on experience in terms of soil color, texture, and structure of healthy soil,” said Paterson, a senior majoring in crops and soil science. “It made all the experiences of judging feel real and gave us a chance to apply them to help people, which is why I’m grateful for this experience.”

I'm a college student studying abroad. I'm shocked at how many luxury trips my classmates take.

As a third-year college student attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I jumped at the chance to study abroad . Trading in a semester of snow and freezing temperatures for beautiful architecture and centuries-old art was a no-brainer.

I was so excited that I filled out the application to study in Florence nearly a year before the day I would depart. Four months in Florence, Italy, was comparable to the cost of a semester at my state school . After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.

I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through communal hostel stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.

The other students are jet-setting every weekend to expensive locations

The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. My roommates and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.

Standing among groups of strangers , I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.

Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to afford travel every five days. I feared I would be left behind.

I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a weekend in Dubai " was not what I expected.

Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be

My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding affordable tickets on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.

My three roommates and I booked a studio apartment for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.

That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the carry-on baggage fee Ryanair required.

I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.

I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.

I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my Instagram feed . It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.

Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.

I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the best airlines or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.

This year, multiple awards ranging from $400 to $550 were granted, depending on student interest and engagement. These funds play a crucial role in enabling students to attend significant conferences across the globe, contributing to their academic and professional growth.

New federal rule bars transgender school bathroom bans, but it likely isn’t the final word

A  new rule  from President Joe Biden’s administration blocking blanket policies to keep transgender students from using school bathrooms that align with their gender identity could conflict with laws in Republican-controlled states.

The clash over bathroom policy and other elements of a federal regulation finalized last week could set the stage for another wave of legal battles over how transgender kids should be treated in the U.S.

In recent years, transgender people have gained visibility and acceptance in the U.S. — and some conservative officials have pushed back.

Most GOP-controlled states now have laws reining in their rights. Measures include laws to keep transgender girls out of girls school sports, limiting which school bathrooms transgender people can use, requiring school staff to notify parents if their student identifies in school as transgender, and barring school staff from being required to use the pronouns a transgender student uses.

Most of those policies have been challenged in court.

Here’s a look at the new regulation, the states’ laws and what could happen next.

What's the heart of the regulation?

The  1,577-page regulation  finalized last week seeks to clarify Title IX, the 1972 sex discrimination law originally passed to address women’s rights and applies to schools and colleges that receive federal money.

The regulations, which are to take effect in August, spell out that Title IX bars discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, too.

Many Republicans say this wasn’t the intent of the law.

The new rules also provide more protections to students who make accusations of sexual misconduct.

Rule contradicts bathroom laws

At least 11 states have adopted laws barring transgender girls and women from using girls’ and women’s bathrooms at public schools.

The new regulation opposes those sweeping policies.

It states that sex separation at schools isn’t always unlawful. However, the separation becomes a violation of Title IX’s nondiscrimination rule when it causes more than a very minor harm on a protected individual, “such as when it denies a transgender student access to a sex-separate facility or activity consistent with that student’s gender identity.”

The laws are in effect in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. A judge’s order putting enforcement on hold is in place in Idaho. A  prohibition in Utah  is scheduled to take effect July 1.

Rule allows parental notification requirements

At least seven states have laws or other policies calling for schools to notify parents if their children are transgender.

The regulation seems to authorize those requirements, stating that “nothing in these final regulations prevents a recipient from disclosing information about a minor child to their parent who has the legal right to receive disclosures on behalf of their child.”

The requirements are already law in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana and North Carolina. The Arizona law requires schools to provide information to parents but does not specifically include details about students’ gender expression or sexuality.  Virginia asked schools  to provide guidance to the state’s school districts to adopt similar policies, though they’re not written into state law.

Are pronoun restrictions legal? It depends

At least four states laws — Florida, Kentucky, Montana and North Dakota — intended to protect from discipline teachers and/or students who won’t use the pronouns transgender or nonbinary students use.

The regulations wrestle with this, finding that “harassing a student — including acts of verbal, nonverbal, or physical aggression, intimidation, or hostility based on the student’s nonconformity with stereotypical notions of masculinity and femininity or gender identity — can constitute discrimination on the basis of sex under Title IX in certain circumstances.”

But they also spell out that “a stray remark” does not constitute harassment and seek to protect the right of free speech.

The big debate: sports participation

The new rules don’t specifically mention whether states can ban transgender girls from girls sports competitions. The Biden administration has put on hold a policy that would  forbid schools  from having outright bans.

State laws that contain such bans have been adopted in at least two dozen states in the name of preserving girls sports. But  judges have paused enforcement  of some of them, including in a ruling last week that applies only to one teenage athlete in West Virginia.

While the new rules are not specific to sports participation, advocates on both sides believe they could apply.

“They may be saying that this doesn’t address it, but through the broad language they’re using, the ultimate result is you have to allow a boy on a girls team,” said Matt Sharp, a lawyer with Alliance Defending Freedom, falsely identifying transgender girls as boys. Alliance Defending Freedom is a conservative group that has represented female athletes challenging sports participation by transgender women and girls.

“This document gives a good sense that says you can’t have a rule that says, ‘If you’re transgender, you can’t participate,’” said Harper Seldin, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer.

What happens now?

Lawsuits, probably.

After the rules were unveiled last week, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti posted on X that “TN is prepared to defend Title IX & protect against unlawful regulations that redefine what sex really means.”

“We absolutely plan to challenge this betrayal of women in court,” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said in a statement Monday.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond submitted comments critical of the rule before it was finalized.

Over the last two decades, attorneys general have frequently sued the opposing party’s president over rules and executive orders.

Sharp of Alliance Defending Freedom said his group is still dissecting the federal rules but does represent groups that could be affected, including female athletes and religious schools and could sue over aspects of the rules. He expects states to do the same thing.

“I don’t think a lot of states want to wait until the federal government enforces this,” he said.

The ACLU’s Seldin said his organization will watch carefully how the rules play out.

“What do theses laws and regulations mean in terms of transgender youth and transgender students who find themselves attacked in every aspect of their lives?” he asked.
