The Ultimate Guide for a Perfect Panama Canal Cruise

Posted on Last updated: August 21, 2023

While many dream of visiting Central America, very few ever get the chance to experience cruising through the very spot North and South America split. Many note that a vacation to Panama is too expensive or not safe. Well, let me tell you, the best way to see the Panama Canal and possibly get off your boat at an affordable price is through a Panama Canal cruise!

If you are bit wary to cruising, you are going to absolutely fall in love with what the Panama Canal has to offer! I had the chance to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on my Panama Canal cruise back in December 2019, and to this date, it is my favorite cruise that I have been on.

Plus, cruise ships offer an extra sense of security, as you will have a safe place to rest your head everyday. So, grab your  free cruise planner , review our top cruise essentials , and buckle up, because we are going to go through everything you may need to know about Panama Canal cruises!

When is the Season for Panama Canal Cruises?

Panama Canal cruises

Most cruises through the Panama Canal consistently run from October to April. This means you have a lot of flexibility for when you want to enjoy your Panama Canal cruise, whether looking for a Christmas escape, Spring Break adventure, or planning a Transpacific back-to-back cruise .

If you are planning to cruise the Panama Canal and the surrounding Caribbean countries, the optimal time is after the rainy season ends in November for the best weather, wildlife, and viewing experience . This is truly when the temperatures are the most comfortable and enjoyable with sunnier days and breathtakingly scenic Panama Canal views.

For longer, repositioning Panama Canal cruises, you should stick to the earlier or later months of this window when the cruise ships are finding a new home.

There are some  Panama cruises running year-round , which are typically shorter in length between 3-5 nights long.

How is the Weather on a Panama Canal Cruise?

Since the Panama Canal is nestled between the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, weather can vary greatly during Panama Canal cruises. With the varying climates of Panama and the mixing weather of two different oceans, it would be best to prepare for some rainy weather during the transit.

When I went on my Panama Canal cruise, there were plenty of clouds in the sky, however, it did not rain. That being said, make sure to bring your rain jacket as it could have just as easily gone the other way. It was also fairly humid , leading to fog during the morning hours of the Panama Canal transit.

Technically the Caribbean side of Panama Canal measures twice the amount of rain as Panama City, notable for short and unpredictable afternoon thunderstorms during the spring months.

Because of Panama’s strategic location, it is safe to assume that you will be enjoying warm temperatures during your Panama Canal cruise. The Panama Canal area has a tropical climate , meaning temperatures will range between 75 and 85 degrees on your Panama cruising adventure.

How do I plan a Panama Canal Cruise?

Panama Canal cruise

If you have never been on a cruise before, you may have  some questions about the logistics  and  how to plan your cruise .

First, you will want to get an idea of what your  must-see attractions are. Most Panama Canal cruises will focus on either Caribbean islands, Central America, Mexican Rivera, or a combination of those destinations. Very few Panama Canal cruises are more than 14 days long, but if you are looking for a longer Panama Canal cruise, make sure to investigate repositioning cruises.

After you determine the itinerary you would like, then you need to  focus on a specific cruise line for the best Panama Canal cruise ever. Each cruise line offers a unique experience for every type of cruiser. Then, you can select a date with that perfect cruise line and itinerary to book and mark in your calendar!

I highly recommend  booking a balcony or higher stateroom on your cruise ship as you will not regret waking up to the breathtaking Panama Canal from your own private balcony. Just imagine waking up, stepping outside, and seeing all the fascinating locks and landscape surrounding the transit.

Also, it is important to make sure to avoid the loudest staterooms onboard to completely relax on your Panama Canal cruise.

Once booked, you will receive access to more booking options like  onboard packages, shore excursions, and stateroom upgrades . I highly suggest taking advantage of these pre-travel opportunities to have your vacation planned out before you leave on your Panama cruise!

What are the Different Panama Canal Itineraries?

cruise the Panama Canal

There are way more Panama Canal cruises than you probably thought possible! With that, you may be wondering what the best itinerary is for your specific cruising goals. From repositioning cruises to Mexican Riviera adventures, there are positives and negatives to every itinerary option in the cruising realm in regards to Panama Canal cruises.

With that being said, all Panama Canal cruises can be categorized into three categories– Trans-Canal Crossing, Partial Crossing, and Faux Crossing.

Trans-Panama Canal Crossing

By far the most popular Panama Canal itinerary for cruises runs from Florida to the West Coast– or vice versa. The most popular departure ports are Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, with Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego serving as the larger West Coast cities.

If you are lucky, you may be able to find some longer sailings departing from Seattle, Washington or Vancouver, Canada. However, if you prefer to plan a back to back cruise , I highly suggest heading out of and to one of the most popular ports, as these will typically have more options to extend your cruising vacation.

Most trans-Canal itineraries will call in many ports found in the Western Caribbean. These include Puerto Limon and Puntarenas in Costa Rica, and Cartagena, Colombia. Other Panama Canal itineraries include stops along Mexico’s west coast and in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala.

Panama Canal Experience

With this trans-Panama Canal itinerary, you can expect to spend a full day on the canal, crossing the beautiful Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific, or vice versa.

If you have been dreaming about cruising the Panama Canal for a while, this cruise itinerary is definitely for you! Plus, you will more than likely receive an in-depth history of Panama and the lock system involved with the Canal. Therefore, if you are an engineering geek and don’t mind not getting off the ship within Panama, this itinerary is for you.

Partial Crossing

cruising through the Panama Canal

If you are wanting to get the “Panama Canal Experience” but are looking for a round-trip itinerary, I highly suggest looking into the Panama Canal Partial Crossing cruises.

This is also a great option for those who want to see a bit of the canal, but also want to get out and explore the country of Panama. Most partial crossing itineraries will stop in Colon and Gamboa, perfect towns to get a taste of Panamanian culture.

Most of the partial crossing Panama Canal cruises will depart from Florida, and therefore, you will also enjoy some of the other fabulous Caribbean ports during your adventure. These include islands in the Southern and Western Caribbean, and occasionally Cartagena, Colombia.

On partial crossings, the cruise ships do not actually cross the entire Panama Canal. Instead, the ship will typically pass through one lock, and let passengers of in a town along the canal to explore.

Passengers on their Panama Canal cruise with partial crossing will discover the town of Gamboa, taking in sights that they would not otherwise get to experience and see during the full crossing itineraries. From Gamboa, passengers can expect to enjoy a variety of shore excursions that they otherwise would not get a chance to experience.

Alternatively, for those who were hoping to see the full canal, you can book a shore excursion on a smaller boat to the Centennial Bridge, Gaillard Cut, and the Bridge of the Americas.

Faux Crossing

cruising the Panama Canal

The last form of Panama Canal cruise is the Faux Crossing itinerary. Many cruise lines will offer all the proper shore excursions of Panama Canal cruises without actually entering the canal at all!

Instead, these cruise ships dock at Colon, Panama (the entrance to the canal), and spend a day on the Caribbean side in port. From here, passengers can see the canal however their heart desires, whether stopping for a few minutes on a city tour, or booking a longer shore excursion through a private boat tour crossing the Panama Canal.

The best way to find this type of Panama Canal cruise is through searching for Caribbean and Central American itineraries that stop in Colon. From there, look into the shore excursions carefully to fully plan your Panama Canal adventure.

Types of Panama Canal Cruise Lines

Panama cruise

No matter what type of Panama cruising experience you are looking for, I guarantee you will find it through one of these main and not-so-main-stream cruise lines.

From 3-day weekend trips to 180-day world cruises, these Panama Canal cruises are worth every penny. There are plenty of Panama cruise deals available for eager cruisers booking through a travel agent or directly with the cruise line.

Make sure to research diligently to find the best Panama Canal cruise for you!

Many cruises through the Panama Canal offer trips to these popular ports of call that are consistent with most itineraries. Like mainstream Caribbean cruise ports, these ports cater to the tropical   cruise market . If you are looking for more than touristy attractions and activities, make sure to get out of the main port area and explore.

Colón, Panama

colon panama

The city of Colón is most frequently referred to as the gateway to the Caribbean for the country of Panama. Therefore, if you are cruising through the Panama Canal, there is a high chance this port will be on your cruise itinerary.

If you are looking to learn about the history of the Panama Canal before you embark on your transit, make sure to spend two to three hours at the Agua Clara Visitor Center . Here, you will learn about one of the world’s greatest engineering feats; the Panama Canal. For more history of Panama, check out Fort San Lorenzo ; another must-do attraction in Colón. This fort is a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers no official tours, but you can walk around the area with a handy map.

If you prefer to hit up the Panamanian shopping scene on your Panama cruise, check out Avenida Central — a six-block-long pedestrian mall that is filled with tasty, local restaurants with boutique shops and unique finds alike.

Fuerte Amador (Balboa), Panama

fuerte amador panama

Another popular Panama port found on the Caribbean coast near the canal is Fuerte Amador. The main marina found at the tender pier for Panama Canal cruises offers numerous tasty restaurants and souvenir shops.

The top attraction to explore during your time in Fuerte Amador is the Biomuseum . This modern, brightly-colored building is found just across the causeway and illustrates the story of the Panama isthmus formation. Another popular excursion is Casco Viejo , the older area of the city famous for its narrow streets surrounded by flower-lined balconies. Here, you can explore historic cathedrals and sites while browsing the local shops for souvenirs.

If you prefer to learn more about the locks you will see on your Panama Canal cruise, check out the Miraflores Locks Museum and Visitor Center .

Gamboa, Panama

gamboa panama

If you get the opportunity to stop part-way through the Panama Canal, you are more than likely going to stop at the Gamboa cruise port on your Panama Canal cruise.

By far the most popular and worthwhile attraction in the Gamboa cruise port is the Gamboa Rainforest . One area that offers a unique experience is the Sloth Sanctuary . There is also a aerial tram that will bring you through the vast rainforest and the surrounding landscape. Another nice Gamboa shore excursion is a boat trip on the Chagres River to Gatun Lake .

Another exciting outdoor adventure spot is the Soberania National Park . This has been noted as one of the best places in the world to observe flora and fauna.

Cartagena, Colombia

cartagena colombia

Another popular Panama Canal cruise port is Cartagena, Colombia. This beautiful South American city is filled with colorful buildings, fresh seafood, and tropical fruits– all of which will leave you wanting more!

The easiest excursion to enjoy in Cartagena is a free walking tour. This is the best way to see the Old City area on your Panama Canal cruise as you can easily spend hours meandering the streets boasting loads of fascinating Colombian history. To dive deeper into Cartagena’s history, head over to San Felipe Castle — the most famous landmark in Cartagena, built back in 1657.

Before you head back to your Panama Canal cruise, make sure to grab some fruit from the local palenqueras — groups of women balancing bowls of fruit on their heads dressed in vibrant colors.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

puntarenas costa rica

Puntarenas is most popular as the biggest beach town near Costa Rica’s capital city. As a simple and laidback town, Puntarenas used to be to the largest fishing port in the country.

That being said, the top thing to do in Puntarenas on your Panama Canal cruise is heading over to the main beach– Playa Puntarenas . If you prefer to get out of the port area, take the Puntarenas ferry to either Paquera or Naranjo . These are the best spots to experience the local Costa Rican life on your adventure.

If you can’t decide what to do during your time in the Puntarenas cruise port, many shore excursions offer numerous stops at the city’s top attractions during their tours. These typically stop at the nearby rainforest and Tarcoles Town .

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica

puerto limon costa rica

The more popular and larger Costa Rican cruise port is Puerto Limón. There are plenty of outdoor and historic activities to enjoy during your Panama Canal cruise stopping in Costa Rica.

The best outdoor area to explore is the nearby Veragua Rainforest Park. Here you will find hundreds of frogs, butterflies, and reptiles, in addition to monkeys, sloths, and birds up above. Just a few miles from Puerto Limón is the breathtaking Playa Bonita , the perfect tropical beach offering crystal-clear waters and soft sand. If you are an adrenalin-junkie, check out the rafting opportunities on the Reventazon River .

Finally, book a tour to the nearby banana plantations . During this enlightening tour you will come to understand how bananas grow, are cleaned, and ultimately selected.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

san juan del sur nicaragua

Another popular port for cruises through the Panama Canal is San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. This cruise port is not as common as other Central American cruise ports, so make sure to watch out for this unique city on your itinerary!

San Juan del Sur is home to one of the world’s largest Jesus statues. In fact, hiking to the Jesus statue sitting atop a hill overlooking San Juan del Sur is the top thing to do when in this fabulous city. If you are looking for the best beaches during your Panama Canal cruise, you may want to venture a little out of town to the beautiful beaches Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa . One of the most special things to do in this city is horseback riding on the beach , so make sure to ask your cruise line if there are any shore excursions like this on your Panama Canal cruise.

Finally, if you prefer to get back on the water, take a catamaran ride around the area. These tours will typically offer all you can drink and delicious snacks with your fare, stopping at beautiful private beaches for you to explore and enjoy.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

cabo san lucas mexico

While Cabo San Lucas is most popular as a college Spring Break destination, there are also plenty of enjoyable attractions for cruisers of all ages during your Panama Canal cruise.

The most notable and photograph site in Cabo is Land’s End . Most travelers will travel to this area for its breathtaking views– strategically located right where Playa del Amor and Playa del Divorcio join. If you would like to explore some of the traditional Mexican culture, head over to San Jose del Cabo . This area is the official “Old Town” of Cabo San Lucas, offering plenty of tasty local eateries and artisanal shops. Later, tour the Church of Saint Luke , one of Cabo San Lucas’ top historical landmarks.

If you prefer to head back onto the beautiful ocean, sign up for one of Cabo’s deep-sea fishing adventures on the Sea of Cortez.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

puerto vallarta mexico

Puerto Vallarta is another one of Mexico’s beautiful gems frequently visited on Panama Canal cruises. As a destination that has welcomed travelers from around the world for many years, there are plenty of fascinating activities and Puerto Vallarta shore excursions for every age.

If you are looking for one of the top beaches, head over to Las Caletas . This beautiful beach is one of the top private beaches in the world where you can find crystal-clear waters brushing up against the jungle-mountain backdrop. To learn about Puerto Vallarta’s history, head over to San Sebastian Del Oeste . This Puerto Vallarta attraction dates all the way back to 1605 as one of Mexico’s most well-preserved towns. Other historic towns include Talpa and Mascota , both colonial mining villages.

If you prefer to explore Puerto Vallarta’s vast natural beauty, check out Islas Marietas , one of the area’s protected state parks offering exotic marine wildlife and lush scenery.

The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

Gwen Pratesi

Transiting the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for many travelers, especially for history and engineering buffs. If you're considering this bucket-list sailing, you'll want to find the best time to cruise the Panama Canal, whether that be to find better weather, lower pricing or fewer crowds.

The Panama Canal cruise season peaks between October and April, outside of the rainy season that can start as early as mid-March and extend into the fall. With a tropical climate, this region is home to rainforests, incredible biodiversity, lush landscapes, abundant wildlife and beautiful beaches, but the weather can be wet at certain times of the year.

Panama Canal itineraries come in several flavors. One-way cruises sail between Florida and California, Washington or Canada; these complete a full transit of the canal. Partial-transit itineraries sail round-trip from Florida ports and only go through the locks on the Caribbean side. Some ships depart from or end in Panama or Costa Rica and feature itineraries that focus on the Pacific Coast of Central America or the Caribbean.

In addition to visiting Panama, many itineraries include ports of call in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia or Mexico, which can be the highlight of the trip, especially for outdoor enthusiasts.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It used to be that only smaller Panamax ships could squeeze through the locks of the Panama Canal. However, with the opening of a new set of locks in 2016, larger New-Panamax-sized ships can transit, as well. That means you take a Panama Canal cruise on a small-masted Windstar ship or luxury Silversea cruise or can sail on a megaship as large as the 1,094-foot-long and 136-foot-wide Norwegian Bliss.

Here, we look at Panama's peak cruise season month by month, so you can consider the weather, pricing and crowds to determine the best time to cruise through the Panama Canal.

Pros: October is one of the best months for cooler temperatures, lower fares and fewer crowds.

Cons: October is still the rainy season, and it's humid. It's also hurricane season in the Caribbean.

Ships: Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania, Hurtigruten Expeditions, Lindblad and luxury lines Scenic and Silversea offer sailings during the month.

October is a rainy month, but it's also one of the coolest months of the year, with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. The average year-round temperature in Panama is about 86 degrees, so it doesn't vary much during the year, but it's more humid in October with the wet weather. It's also possible to have hurricanes this time of year if you're cruising in the Caribbean.

For outdoor adventure seekers, it's too wet for hiking in the rainforests, but other activities benefit from the rainy season, including whitewater rafting. In Quepos, Costa Rica, Windstar Cruises offers rafting trips to the town of Santo Domingo, where you can take a float trip on the Savegre River. Experienced surfers can also check out the big swells on both coasts of the country.

If you have an extended stay in Panama City, consider a trip to the Archipelago de las Perlas (Pearl Islands) in southeastern Panama to view the humpback whales. It's a short flight to the islands, or you can travel by ferry to see the whales that are still in the waters around the archipelago after coming to breed in August and September. If traveling earlier in the month, you may also see nesting loggerheads and green turtles southeast of Panama City in Isla Canas (Cane Island) or Bocas del Toro.

cruise ship canal panama

Pros: November is one of the best months for lower cruise fares.

Cons: November is still the rainy season and the end of hurricane season. You can also expect some crowds in port with the national holidays.

Ships: Windstar, Star Clippers and Seabourn will also have vessels transiting the Panama Canal in November.

November can be rainy — and even the rainiest month of the wet season — with temperatures starting to warm closer to December. The month brings a mix of low-priced early-season fares but also several public holidays that bring crowds of both tourists and residents to attractions in places like Panama City and Boquete.

For a rainy-day excursion, ride the Panama Canal Railway, one of the world's great train rides. If you're in Panama City, plan an indoor excursion with a visit to the world's first museum dedicated to biodiversity, the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo.

You can celebrate Panama's Separation Day on Nov. 3 or Flag Day on Nov. 4. These holidays, along with a few others in November, feature parades, parties and other displays of national pride, so you can expect it to be busy in towns across the country.

Related: The best time to go on a cruise

Pros: December is the beginning of the dry season, so the weather will be drier and less humid.

Cons: The month is one of the busiest times for tourism, so you can expect to pay higher fares and have more crowds in port.

Ships: A few additional cruise lines offer Panama Canal crossings during December, including Celebrity, Carnival, Crystal and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

With drier weather and high temperatures hovering around 88 degrees, it's less humid in the region in December. However, it's the holiday season, so cruise fares and other costs, like hotels for pre- and post-cruise stays, will be more expensive if you travel this month. December is one of the peak tourism months in Panama, with Panamanians traveling for the holidays and visitors from North America and Europe escaping the cold weather at home.

December is the best month to plan excursions to places like Panama's rainforest and Chagres National Park to meet the indigenous Embrera people. You can also take an eco-cruise on Gatun Lake, which concludes with a visit to the Agua Clara Locks Visitor Center, where you'll learn about this engineering feat that connects two oceans. If you're comfortable exploring on your own, rent a car or hire a local guide to visit places like Soberania National Park.

Pros: January is regarded as one of the best months to visit Panama with the drier weather and high temperatures around the mid-80s. It's also less bustling with tourists than it is in December.

Cons: It's peak season on land and at sea, so hotel and cruise prices are high. Panama City will also be busy with the jazz festival mid-month.

Ships: Cunard, Azamara, Emerald Cruises and Tauck Tours (with a chartered Ponant yacht) enter the market in January.

January's dry weather makes the month the perfect time to explore Central America's national parks, jungles and tropical rainforests, including Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park and Curú Wildlife Refuge and Panama's Darien National Park. During your visit, be sure to look for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, blue-footed boobies, capybaras, crocodiles and even manatees on a jungle boat tour along the canal and into Gatun Lake.

If you're a jazz buff, the Panama Jazz Festival is held in Panama City in mid-January, January 16-21. The six-day event features hundreds of renowned jazz musicians from around the world with live performances, a gala evening and concerts. If you're embarking in Colon, Panama, you can fly into Panama City a few days early for the festivities. The distance between the two cities is less than 50 miles. Alternatively, linger in Panama after your cruise to attend the festival, or look for sailings with full-day stops in Panama City during the jazz festival.

Related: When is the best time to book a cruise?

Pros: February is the second-best month to cruise the Panama Canal, with optimal weather during the dry season.

Cons: It's still peak season with higher cruise fares and prices ashore — but there are fewer cruise lines in the region. Snowbirds are still avoiding the cold weather and snowstorms at home, so you can expect many tourists, especially in Panama City. Carnival typically occurs across the country in February, depending on when Easter falls that year, bringing crowds.

Ships: Ponant is the only new addition in the region, offering one sailing early in the month. The other cruise lines sailing the Panama Canal in February are Holland America, Oceania, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival, Lindblad, Tauck, Emerald and Windstar.

Take advantage of the final weeks of the dry season to book active outdoor adventure excursions like hiking, kayaking and zip lining. Another option is the Rainforest and Aerial Tram tour to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort in the 55,000-acre Soberania National Park. The tram climbs 280 feet through the dense jungle vegetation to reach the tree canopy above. During the ride to the top, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, sloths, butterflies, iguanas, toucans and frogs.

Carnival is a festival in mid-January in Panama City and other towns around the country. It's one of the biggest celebrations in Central America — even bigger than the Christmas holidays for most families, so you can expect crowds during that time.

Pros: March is the last month of the dry season, although the rains can start by midmonth during some years. You can expect pleasant weather, although it's quite warm, with temperatures reaching as high as the low 90s. You can also find late-season low fares on some of the larger ships.

Cons: It's still one of the busiest months for travel with the moderate weather.

Ships: New luxury line Explora Journeys joins the vessels in the region in March with an extended sailing that includes transiting the Panama Canal.

With the warmer temperatures, March is an ideal month to head to the beaches on one of the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of about 365 islands and cays off the Caribbean coast of Eastern Panama. Some cruise lines that visit the archipelago are Windstar, Star Clippers, Hapag-Lloyd and Ponant.

You can also look for excursions through the cruise line — or make independent arrangements — to go on an adventurous hike under the canopy of the rainforest, take a boat tour to explore the diverse flora and fauna along the canal or go windsurfing or sailboarding on Costa Rica's Lake Arenal with the Arenal Volcano as the backdrop. March is also the last month for surfing enthusiasts to hit the big waves on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Should Semana Santa (Holy Week, from Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday) fall in March, there will be more crowds nationwide in Panama with religious processions and reenactments, parades and other special events. Many venues and attractions may be closed on some days during the festivities.

Pros: April is one of the best months to look for lower late-season fares on the larger ships.

Cons: The weather may not be ideal. The high temperatures in Panama hit just below 90 degrees on most days of the month. Mid-April is also when the wet season typically begins, so you can expect high humidity and rain. It's also still a busy time with tourists, so the prices are high ashore. If Easter falls in April, you may have to contend with the crowds celebrating Holy Week during the festivities.

Ships: If you're interested in a sailing on a luxury cruise ship, Silversea is the only luxury line still in the region in April. For a cruise on a large ship, choose among itineraries on Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess.

With the high temperatures and humidity — and the threat of rain — you might want to take tours where you can easily escape from the heat and the showers. If you're in Panama City, visit the vibrant neighborhood of Casco Antiguo in the city's historic district.

Dating back to 1673, the UNESCO World Heritage Site features landmarks like the Panama National Theater and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary. You'll also find some of the city's best restaurants, beautiful squares and plazas and top-rated museums. If you've booked a pre- or post-cruise hotel in town, be sure to catch a sunset from one of the city's many rooftop bars.

Bottom line: The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

When to cruise the Panama Canal will depend on what's most important to you.

If having the best weather is your top priority, January, February and early March offer the best weather during the dry season with low humidity — but it's also the most expensive time to travel to the region. You can expect crowds, especially with the festivals during that time.

If you want the best pricing and fewer crowds, October and November are the rainy season, so the pricing will be lower — and you'll avoid the holiday crowds and high fares in December.

Late March and April also offer lower fares as it's the beginning of the rainy season, but you can expect crowds during the Holy Week festivities in the country.

Princess Cruises Rolls Out Fleetwide Dining Revolution: Traditional, Reservable, Open Seating, and Anywhere Service Now Available for Every Guest Preference

New options follow successful debut aboard new sun princess.

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., (April 13, 2024) – Princess Cruises today announced it is making a significant enhancement to the main dining options found across its fleet, designed to give guests the ultimate in flexibility and choice when it comes to their dining experience by offering three table service options – Traditional, Reservable, or Walk-in Anytime - coupled with the brand’s industry exclusive OceanNow location-based “anywhere” service.

With a dedication to personal preference and individualized service, Princess will designate separate dining rooms aboard every ship in the fleet* to the three table service options – one dedicated to traditional dining offering an early and a late seating every evening; one offering reservable dining times; and a third with open seating to support walk-ins anytime.  The three table service options integrate with the line’s unparalleled OceanNow, which provides guests the convenience of ordering anything, anytime, and receiving it anywhere onboard, making Princess uniquely positioned to accommodate all guest dining preferences.

Making all dining formats available fleetwide follows the resounding success of this new approach already implemented aboard the new Sun Princess.  With the stunning introduction of the new next level Love Boat came the debut of three-story dining room with one floor dedicated to traditional dining, another serving guests with a flexible reservation and a third for anytime walk-ins.

“Our guests have been delighted with the dining flexibility aboard Sun Princess and we’re pleased to extend the concept to all the other ships in our fleet,” said Sami Kohen, Princess Cruises vice president of food and beverage.  “Now whether guests prefer an early seating every evening, or change things up every night, or even change their mind, these flexible dining options ensure that their dining preference is effortlessly accommodated.”

Starting on April 15, 2024, the new approach will launch on Princess voyages departing September 14, 2024 and beyond. To support these changes and the transition to the new system, main dining reservations that already have been made for voyages sailing September 14 and beyond for any ship except Sun Princess will be cancelled. Main dining reservations for guests sailing through September 13 will not be affected.

Starting June 17, booked guests will be able to use the app ahead of their voyage to opt for traditional seating in a dedicated dining room with the same waiter, same table and same time each night, or flexible dining, allowing them to enjoy dinner at any available time and table size of their choosing in either the Reservable or Open Seating dining rooms.

This change does not affect guests booked in specialty dining restaurants or suite or reserve collection accommodations, who enjoy a dedicated dining room on Princess ships, where no reservations are required.

Why a major Miami cruise company has canceled over a dozen international trips for 2025

M iami-based Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled at least 14 cruises on 7 ships in 2025 as a booming industry confronts global conflict and other issues.

The cancellations include trips in May and September on Norwegian Viva, the company’s newest ship, and ones in April through June on Norwegian Sky, which frequently sails from PortMiami.

Norwegian said customers who are affected will get a full refund and a 10% discount on future sailings through Dec. 31, 2025.

In a statement, the company said that the cancellations “are a result of varied events, including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas.”

Suspended trips include the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 24, 2025. That ship often departs from Port Canaveral.

Norwegian remains optimistic about cruising. This week, the company ordered eight new ships, its largest ever single purchase, a milestone celebrated at Seatrade Cruise Global, a four-day annual industry conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center. They will be delivered between 2026 and 2036.

Since the terror group Hamas attacked Israel and the Gaza war started in October, cruise companies have been canceling trips to the Middle East.

Next year’s cruise cancellations affect passengers of the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Sky, and Norwegian Viva.

A March 28 letter to passengers said: “We have been monitoring the situation in Israel, and despite our best hopes that it would de-escalate, we have made the decision to alter published itineraries that transit through and around the region.”

For Epic, the decision was made “in order to reroute her and accommodate the early start to her Caribbean cruise season.”

The Sky will be rerouted around Africa and deployed to Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, a letter to those passengers said.

Viva is being sent to the Mediterranean, passengers were told in a letter.

Despite any security risks, major airlines including United and Delta have said they will resume flights to Israel. Next week, El Al resumes non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tel Aviv twice a week. The Israeli airline continues to offer five flights a week from Miami International Airport.

Norwegian in its statement said the cruise company remains committed to taking its guests to “some of the most sought-out destinations around the world.” But sometimes, itineraries need to be modified to “accommodate certain circumstances.”

Other reasons for the cruise changes

But security in the Middle East isn’t the only reason for the changes.

The Norwegian Star canceled because of a “full ship charter.” That means a private organization offered to rent out the whole ship for an entire trip.

The Norwegian Spirit underwent a planned renovation in less time than anticipated, and so now wants to use that time for a longer trip. “As the renovation period will be complete prior to schedule, we now have the opportunity to enhance the originally scheduled January 21, 2025 itinerary, and offer a longer and more immersive experience,” it told guests in a letter.

Meanwhile the canceled sailings on the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 25 is “part of a fleet redeployment to accommodate strong demand for cruises through the Panama Canal and to the Bahamas,” the company wrote in a letter to passengers.

Cruise cancellations list

Here is a full list of cruises canceled by Norwegian is listed here, provided by the company:

  • Norwegian Spirit: Jan. 21, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade: Feb. 20 through March 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky: April 19 through June 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Star: May 17 through June 9, 2025
  • Norwegian Viva: May 18 and 27, and Sept. 20 and 29, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl: Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Epic: Nov. 1 and Nov. 11, 2025

Panama plans dry alternative to drought-hit canal

A cargo ship passes through the Panama Canal

Panama on Wednesday unveiled plans for a "dry canal" to move cargo between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans due to low water levels in its century-old maritime channel.

The Panama Canal usually handles about six percent of global maritime trade, but a drought caused by climate change and the El Niño phenomenon has forced authorities to limit the number of ships passing through.

The Multimodal Dry Canal project will use existing roads, railways, port facilities, airports and duty-free zones in a new "special customs jurisdiction," said Rodolfo Samuda, director of logistics at the ministry of the presidency.

It will not require any investment thanks to its use of existing infrastructure, he said at the presentation of the project.

A decree simplifying procedures for transporting cargo by land across the isthmus has already been declared by President Laurentino Cortizo.

The project aims "to complement the Panama Canal" and resolve the problems facing its users, said Guillermo Salazar, director of the country's state development planning institute.

Now 27 ships navigate the Panama Canal each day, compared with 39 previously.

Unlike the Suez Canal, it uses fresh water provided by previously abundant tropical rains stored in two artificial lakes, which are also a crucial source of drinking water.

The canal—used mainly by customers from the United States, China, Japan and South Korea—has a system of locks to raise and lower ships.

For each vessel that passes through it, 200 million liters of fresh water are released into the sea.

The capacity restrictions have caused a marine traffic jam on some days of more than 100 ships waiting to enter the 50-mile (80-kilometer) waterway, which was inaugurated in 1914.

To avoid a delay, some vessels paid up to four million dollars for a slot in an auction, in addition to the usual toll.

The problems are seen as potential economic opportunity by some of Panama's neighbors.

In December, Mexico unveiled an interoceanic railway billed as an alternative to the canal.

Honduras presented an ambitious project for a freight railroad between the Pacific and the Atlantic in February, although it currently lacks the financing to build it.

Travel Review & Tips: Naejangsan National Park Fall Foliage Trip

' src=

Check out our travel review on Naejangsan National Park, one of the most popular fall foliage destinations in Korea!

naejangsan national park tour

With the cool and crisp weather, autumn is considered the best time to visit Korea. Autumn in Korea also offers stunning views of the brilliant fall colors. One of the most popular foliage spots is Naejangsan National Park . If you’re not familiar with Naejangsan National Park, check out this post about my fall foliage experience at Naejangsan National Park through Trazy’s one-day autumn foliage tour. Typically, October and November are the best time to take a fall foliage trip. So if you don’t want to miss out on Korea’s breathtaking autumn foliage, be sure to plan your leaf-peeping getaway early!

About Naejangsan National Park

naejangsan national park tour

If this is your first time hearing about the park, Naejangsan National Park is home to Naejangsan or Mount Naejang, a beautiful Korean mountain. The park is situated near Jeong-up, a city in North Jeolla Province (Jeollabuk-do) in the southwest of Korea. It is particularly famous for its vivid crimson foliage, 600-year-old nutmeg trees, and waterfalls. At Naejangsan, there are two famous  Buddhist temple s, Baekyangsa Temple and Naejangsa Temple. T he tree-lined path   from the Hiking Information Center to Naejangsa Temple is very popular for its breathtaking canopy of colorful autumn leaves!

Though autumn is definitely the park’s peak season, it’s also gorgeous during the spring when azaleas and cherry blossoms bloom, in summer when the mountain turns greener, and in winter when the rock cliffs are blanketed in snow.

How to go to Naejangsan National Park

| By train: Take the KTX from Yongsan Station to Jeong-eup Station, then take a local bus to Naejangsan National Park. This can be quite confusing for first-time travelers and the KTX train tickets can be expensive as they cost around 40,000 KRW (around 39 USD). Plus, train tickets may run out quickly since fall is a high season in Korea.

| By car: It takes around 3~4 hours from Seoul, but during weekends or peak season, it may take even more. During the peak season, access to the mountain can become quite difficult, especially if you arrive late. It’s best to arrive early in the morning and leisurely explore.

| By tour: If you join Trazy’s   fall foliage tour, you won’t have to worry about transportation and finding your way to the park. The tour also includes an admission fee, an English-speaking tour staff, a light breakfast, and a bottle of water.

Here’s How Trazy’s Fall Foliage Tour Goes…

From seoul to naejangsan national park.

The tour bus departs from Hongik University Station at 6:00 a.m. Other pick-up locations are Myeongdong Station (6:30 a.m.) and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (6:40 a.m.). On the way, you will stop at a rest stop where you can use the bathroom and buy snacks. The bus will arrive at Naejangsan National Park around 10:30 a.m. From then, you will have free time to explore the park alone!

Click here for the detailed itinerary of the tour

I took one of the easier courses that involved barely any steep inclines or difficulty. From the parking lot, you will take a 5-minute ride to the ticket booth via a free shuttle bus.

naejangsan national park tour

The English-speaking tour staff will give you the entrance ticket and you will take another shuttle bus to the entrance of the National Park. All courses start and finish at this entrance where the ticket booths are. The bus fee is part of the tour and you won’t need to wait in the ticket line. The first shuttle was big, but this one was smaller and more cramped but it didn’t matter since the ride was short.

naejangsan national park tour

There were lots of hikers and tourists even though it was only 11 am. On the way, you can find this sign in the picture below. On the left is the cable car, which you can ride at an additional cost. 0.5 km. To the right is Naejangsa Temple, which is where I went.

naejangsan national park tour

The walk to the temple takes around 5 minutes and is so enthralling and beautiful that you’ll be stopping for photos constantly!

You can find several restaurants and vendors selling vegetables, herbs, teas, kimchi, meat, makgeolli (Korean rice wine) and acorn jelly as well as various trinkets.

Top 3 Attractions in Naejangsan National Park

1. naejangsa temple.

naejangsan national park tour

After a leisurely 5 minute walk from the entrance of the park, you will arrive at Naejangsa Temple. The trees and floor were coated with leaves and there was a pond with statues spurting out water. Korean Buddhist temples also have wells called ‘Yaksuteo.’ These wells pour out the water that is fresh and drinkable, which you can do with the plastic cups provided.

naejangsan national park tour

The highlight was a singing performance by a monk. He was singing a pop song with a voice that you would expect to hear from someone like Pavarotti or Bocelli. He was amazing.

| Best photo spots at Naejangsa Temple

1) Illjumun Gate : It is symbolic because it is the entrance to the Buddhist temple and is apparently good for taking group photos.

naejangsan national park tour

2) The lanterns : These were located in front of the temple. I LOVE the colors and found that they made the perfect background for a photo as they swayed gently in the wind.

3) Baekyangsa Temple : Baekyangsa Temple was founded during the Baekje Dynasty (632 C.E.) and it is a good place to take a walk while appreciating the autumn foliage of Naejangsan National Park.

4) Resting area : This area was where a lot of people were sitting down to take a rest. There were stairs leading up to the top where many photos were being taken too. The photographer would stand there and point their camera down so that the foliage would be captured with the subject in the middle.

2. Uhwajeong Pavilion

The leisurely downhill walk from the temple back to the parking lot was about an hour and 40 minutes down a long path called the ‘Five Colors Danpoong (Korean for autumn leaves) Path’. As we walked down, we saw Uhwajeong Pavilion. The name is derived from the legend that the pavilion once grew wings and ascended into the heavens. Various flowers, trees, and foliage surrounding the pavilion created a view that looked almost fake. The water was also so clear that I could see fish swimming!

| Best Photo Spots at Uhwajeong Pavilion:

1) Stone path:  I noticed many people taking photos on the stone path leading to the pavilion. They would stand in a line and pop their heads out in alternative directions while flailing their arms, which made for a cute photo.

Instagram에서 이 게시물 보기   유재운 JaewoonU(@jaewoonu)님의 공유 게시물

2) From a distance : I also found that taking a photo from further away made the pavilion look like something out of a postcard. This was thanks to the foliage and trees appearing in the surroundings as well as the ray of sunlight!

3. Sinsun Waterfall

Located further down from where Uhwajeong Pavilion is Sinsun Waterfall, which is a historical river bank where Japanese and Korean soldiers fought. Since the river is old, natural stones were stacked in efforts to reconstruct it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get to see the water flowing out on the day of the tour, but when it does, it just looks amazing!

1)  Sinsun Waterfall and Uhwajeong Pavilion

Because Uhwajeong Pavilion is visible behind the waterfall, it makes for the perfect photo as you can see it in its miniature form in the background behind the cascading waterfall!

Trazy’s Survival Tips – Know Before You Go!

| Wear comfortable shoes! I wore a pair of combat boots that were relatively comfortable, but the sneakers would be better. Wear hiking shoes if you plan on trekking along with the more challenging courses.

|   Skip the cable car or be prepared to waste a good two or three hours waiting. It’s much better to explore the paths by walking at that time.

| Stick to Bibimbap if you’re not into foods that have strong seasonings or taste. The tour staff told us one of the tourists ordered a bean paste soup, but it turned out to have such a strong taste that was like ‘cheonggukjang’, a fermented soybean paste that has a pungent scent.

| Avoid weekends . If you head to the park on a Friday, there may be an increased amount of traffic when you head back in the evening. This is normal, though.

naejangsan national park tour

Overall, the day trip to Naejangsan National Park through Trazy’s tour was wonderful. The trail was nice and easy and the weather was amazing. I captured so many amazing photos and got some exercise too! I do kind of wish that I had visited earlier, as the foliage in Naejangsan usually reaches its peak between late October and mid-November. Plus it had rained heavily the day before, making lots of leaves fall to the ground. So, if you are thinking of visiting Naejangsan National Park for fall foliage viewing, it will be best for you to visit between late October and mid-November.

Hi! Do you offer Naejangsan + JeonJu package? Thanks!

Hello, Jella! We do not provide Naejangsan & Jeonju package but if you would like to arrange your trip, please send us an email to [email protected] . 🙂

Hi Ms Amy. I have booked a trip mid of November (a little over a week from now). I reviewed the photos in this blog but I did not see that part where coins where inserted to the wall , to make a wish. Also nearby, a friend showed to me a photo (of statue) of the man In Naejangsang who made the sculpture by his hands , and there were two strong and beautiful rock structure as his background. It looked like a temple. I wonder where it is as I plan to go there if possible. Thank you.

Hello Corazon de Castro. There are two famous Buddhist Temples, Naejangsa Temple and Baegyangsa Temple, in Naejangsan National Park, and the trip that I took with Trazy was to the Naejangsa Temple. At Naejangsa Temple, there is a wishing pond but I did not see any sculptures around the Naejangsa Temple. Perhaps you are talking about the Sculpture Park, which is (at least) an hour’s walk away from Naejangsa Temple. The park does have beautiful sculptures. If you wish to go there, you can take the bus ride through our “Korea Autumn Foliage 1 Day Tour,” but you will have to head out to the Sculpture park on your own. The staff will be guiding the tour group to the Naejangsa Temple, but since the itinerary is not fixed, you can either follow the group or explore freely on your own. But please make sure to get back to the tour bus on time. 🙂

Thanks for your prompt reply. I’m happy that the staff will be guiding the tour group. Since I am travelling alone, I am not confident to be away from the group., I want to make sure I can go back to the tour bus on time.:)

Hi,May I know if mid of October Naejangsan National Park best time yo visit?what is the tour fee/person Thank you

Hi Jen, since the autumn foliage is highly dependent on the weather condition so it’s difficult to predict the best date to catch it. According to the last year’s record, mid-October can be little early if you are looking for the foliage. During that period, we recommend you to check out Odaesan or Seoraksan. For further details, please check out this link: https://www.trazy.com/experience/detail/korea-fall-foliage-tour-mountain

Hello, can I use some images to make animation about the beauty of the naejangsan ?

Hello, I noticed that the last day of the tour schedule is on the 15th of November only. Would you know if the park will be closed November 16 onwards? We are planning to go there on the 16th of November but could not find any package tour available. Hope you can help us. Thank you.

The arrival of cool, crisp autumn weather in Korea signals the perfect time for a visit. This season gifts us with breathtaking displays of vibrant fall colors, and among the most beloved destinations for foliage enthusiasts is Naejangsan National Park.

For those unfamiliar with the wonders of Naejangsan National Park, this post chronicles my unforgettable autumn foliage adventure during Trazy’s one-day tour. Typically, the prime months for experiencing this enchanting foliage are October and November. To ensure you don’t miss out on Korea’s awe-inspiring autumn scenery, it’s advisable to plan your leaf-peeping getaway well in advance!

Introducing Naejangsan National Park: A Jewel in Southwestern Korea

If you’re just now discovering this captivating natural gem, Naejangsan National Park graces the landscape with the majestic presence of Mount Naejang, a Korean mountain renowned for its scenic beauty. Nestled in the heart of South Korea, this park is located near the city of Jeong-up, within North Jeolla Province (Jeollabuk-do), in the southwest region of the country.

What sets Naejangsan apart is its striking crimson foliage, ancient nutmeg trees that have stood the test of six centuries, and enchanting waterfalls that dot the landscape. The park also boasts two notable Buddhist temples, Baekyangsa Temple and Naejangsa Temple. For visitors seeking an unforgettable experience, the tree-lined path leading from the Hiking Information Center to Naejangsa Temple is nothing short of a pilgrimage, as it unfolds beneath a breathtaking canopy of vibrant autumn leaves.

While autumn is undoubtedly the park’s zenith, Naejangsan National Park reveals its splendor in every season. Spring welcomes a bloom of azaleas and cherry blossoms, summer cloaks the mountain in verdant lushness, and winter transforms the rock cliffs into a stunning snowy spectacle.

  • Train Travel : Begin your journey by taking the KTX from Yongsan Station to Jeong-eup Station. From there, you’ll need to catch a local bus to reach Naejangsan National Park. It’s worth noting that this method may be somewhat intricate for first-time travelers. KTX train tickets can be on the pricey side, averaging around 40,000 KRW (approximately 39 USD), and they tend to sell out quickly, especially during the high-demand fall season in Korea.
  • Car Journey : For those who prefer the freedom of driving, it’s roughly a 3 to 4-hour drive from Seoul to Naejangsan National Park. However, do keep in mind that on weekends or during peak seasons, the journey may extend further due to increased traffic. Arriving early in the morning is a wise strategy to ensure smooth access to the mountain and a leisurely exploration experience.
  • Guided Tours : To eliminate the hassle of transportation and navigating your way to the park, consider joining a fall foliage tour provided by Trazy. These tours not only take care of your travel logistics but also include the park’s admission fee, the assistance of an English-speaking tour staff, a light breakfast, and a complimentary bottle of water. It’s an excellent option for a stress-free and enriching visit to Naejangsan National Park.

Here’s How Dynasty Korea Fall Foliage Tour Goes…

Journey from Seoul to Naejangsan National Park:

The tour commences at Hongik University Station, with the bus departing at 6:00 a.m. If you’re not located there, fret not; other pick-up options are available. Myeongdong Station is the next stop at 6:30 a.m., followed by Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station at 6:40 a.m. As you journey towards your destination, there’s a convenient rest stop en route, allowing you to freshen up and grab some snacks.

The tour bus will roll into Naejangsan National Park by approximately 10:30 a.m., granting you the freedom to explore the park at your own pace from this point onward.

If you opt for one of the less demanding trails, you’ll encounter minimal steep inclines or challenges. Starting from the parking area, a brief, 5-minute shuttle bus ride transports you to the ticket booth.

naejangsan national park tour

Upon arrival, the English-speaking tour staff will provide you with the entrance ticket. From there, you’ll hop onto another shuttle bus that will transport you to the National Park’s entrance. It’s worth noting that all hiking courses commence and conclude at this entry point, where the ticket booths are conveniently located.

The bus fare is already included in the tour package, so you won’t need to spend time waiting in the ticket line. While the first shuttle was spacious, the second one might be smaller and slightly more confined, but this should pose no issue as the ride is rather brief.

naejangsan national park tour

Despite the early hour of 11 am, the trails were bustling with hikers and tourists. Along the way, you’ll encounter the sign depicted in the image below. To the left, there’s the option of taking the cable car, which incurs an extra fee, and it’s a mere 0.5 km away. On the right, you’ll find Naejangsa Temple , which was my chosen destination for the day.

The journey to the temple is a brief 5-minute stroll, and the scenery is so captivating and picturesque that you’ll find yourself constantly pausing to capture the beauty with your camera!

Downstream from Uhwajeong Pavilion, you’ll find Sinsun Waterfall, a historically significant riverbank where Japanese and Korean soldiers once clashed. To restore this aged river, natural stones were carefully stacked. Regrettably, during my visit, I couldn’t witness the water flowing out, but when it does, the sight is truly magnificent!

Dynasty Korea Survival Tips – Know Before You Go!

| Opt for comfortable footwear. I personally wore combat boots that were reasonably comfy, but sneakers would be a better choice. If you’re planning on tackling the more challenging trails, consider wearing hiking shoes.

| Consider skipping the cable car, unless you’re prepared to spend a good two or three hours waiting. Exploring the park on foot is a much more enjoyable way to spend your time.

| Stick to Bibimbap if you prefer milder flavors. One of the tourists in our group ordered a bean paste soup, only to find it had an intensely robust taste resembling ‘cheonggukjang,’ a fermented soybean paste known for its pungent aroma.

| Avoid weekends if possible. Heading to the park on a Friday may lead to increased traffic when returning in the evening, but this is quite common.

The day trip to Naejangsan National Park with Trazy’s tour was truly delightful. The trail was pleasantly easy, and we were blessed with fantastic weather. I managed to capture numerous stunning photographs and even squeezed in a bit of exercise. In retrospect, I do wish I had visited earlier, as Naejangsan’s foliage typically reaches its zenith between late October and mid-November. Additionally, heavy rain the day before had caused many leaves to carpet the ground. If you’re considering a visit to Naejangsan National Park for its autumn foliage, I highly recommend planning your trip for the period between late October and mid-November.

Tour Description

Walking through the beautiful Naejangsan Mountain

With breathtaking colours of leaves.

MT. NAEJANGSAN NATIONAL PARK

Mt.Naejangsan is a famous mountain in the Jeolla-do province of Korea, and the best mountain in Korea for viewing autumn crimson leaves. Naejangsan National Park was designated as the 8th national park in Korea in 1971. It is one of the 5 characteristic mountains on southwest Korea, as well as one of the 8 most beautiful mountains in Korea.

Naejangsan was originally named “Yeongeunsan” after its main temple, Yeongeunsa, but was later changed to “Naejangsan”. The name Naejangsan means there are many hidden treasures in the mountain. The mountain is also referred to as "Geumgangsan of Honam(southwest)".

The park is beautiful not only in autumn, but also in spring when the azaleas and cherry blossoms bloom, in summer when the mountain turns fresh green, and winter when the unique rocks and cliffs covered with snow. All throughout the year the mountain shows an amazing scenery.

THE MOST FAMOUS HIKING COURSE - Monggye Waterfall ~ Baekyangsa Temple course

This course is the most famous course among 10 hiking courses in Mountain Naejangsan.

Mt. Naejangsan National Park

Naejangsan National Park

Naejangsan is a famous mountain in the Jeolla-do province, and the best mountain in Korea for viewing autumn’s crimson leaves. The park is 76,032 sq. km. in size and became a National Park along with Baekyangsa District on Nov. 17th, 1971. The name Naejang means ‘many secrets’ in the mountain. Because of the bright crimson leaves that blanket Naejangsan Mountain’s fall scenery, the mountain is also referred to as “Geumgangsan of Honam.”

Inside the park, there are famous waterfalls, such as Dodeok Falls and Geumseon Falls, and temples such as Baekyangsa and Naejangsa temples. If you follow the valley left of the ticket booth, you can see the waters of Dodeok Falls, cascading down the cliff. If you go further along the valley you can see the waters Geumseon Falls where even the gods have supposedly bathed. Baekyangsa Temple is both majestic and serene, surrounded by Gulgeori trees that retain their lush green leaves even in winter, and also the Bija trees. Along with Baekyangsa Temple, the Naejangsa Temple is the place to visit during the fall for its lovely autumn leaves. Besides these, there are about 760 kinds of local plants, designated Natural Monuments, and various wild animals living inside Mt. Naejangsan Park.

The Park is beautiful not only in the fall, but also in the spring when the azaleas and cherry blossoms bloom, in the summer when the green mountain turns greener, and the winter when the rock cliffs cover themselves with snow. All throughout the year, different kinds of wild flowers bloom here.

Home to Mount Naejang, Naejangsan is in Jeolla-do Province, located near Jeongeup City. Even though it’s quite far from Seoul (a 3.5 hour drive covering 230 km), Naejangsan is easily accessible via KTX.

Depart from Seoul

Board the KTX from Yongsan Station to Jeongeup Station, then take a local bus to get to Jeonju.

From Jeonju City, ride a bus to Naejangsan National Park.

Pro-tip: Fall is a peak season in Korea, so you need to book your tickets fast!

  • Schedule: Check the departure time and purchase train tickets as early as 1 month before your trip here
  • Cost: ~ ₩40,000

Easy option: Get round-trip transportation by booking the Naejangsan National Park Day Tour

Upon entering Naejangsan, you will need to pay a small entrance fee of ₩3,000 (cash only!)

If you’re looking to spend the night near the area, look no further than Jeonju Hanok Village. This Joseon-era village boasts over 800 traditional houses called ‘hanoks’. The Jeonju International FIlm Festival has also brought fame to this ancient village.

Drop by PNB and taste the famous bakery’s choco pie ( ₩ 1,500). Have some extra time? Dress up in a hanbok and enjoy a dramatic photoshoot at the heart of traditional Korea. We recommend staying at Airbnbs and hostels inside the Jeonju Hanok Village.

Should you get peckish during your hike within Naejangsan National Park, there are a lot of eateries around. Sample bibimbap, persimmons, and seafood pancakes on your way to Naejangsan Temple.

Ride a cable car to Yeonjabong Peak Observatory

Start your hike with a quick cable car ride! (image via Shutterstock)

You can ride at an additional cost, you can ride the cable car 0.5 km up the side of the mountain. If the lines are long, the cable car is totally skippable. But should you feel lazy, or have tired companions, you’ve got the option to take the easy way out! On your way, gaze upon marvelous vistas of warm-colored fall foliage surrounding you.

Recommended Routes in Naejangsan National Park Areas

Naejang means ‘many secrets’ – uncover its many hidden gems with many people who will be hiking alongside you. But the crowds will not take away from your autumn experience, in fact, it’s part of the Naejangsan charm. Enjoy the rock concert-like atmosphere with quaint stalls selling snacks and knick knacks, locals getting a bit rowdy from drinking some makgeolli,  art performers, and even food festivals.

Naejangsan has eight peaks between 600-700m in elevation. All of the routes are one-day hikes. Below, you’ll find the 3 most recommended hikes, ranging from easy to difficult.

For Beginner Hikers:

Nature Observation Course (1.63 km, one-way)

If you’re bringing children and elderly along, this is a perfectly easy trail for them. Take in the spectacular natural scenery and breathe in fresh mountain air, and tranquil waters. Encounter the 108 Danpung Tunnel, a paved road lined with 108 brilliant maple trees.

What’s more fascinating is the hidden Buddhist meaning – the number 108 is a symbol for the worldly feelings and desires Buddhist hermits must remove.

  • Difficulty: Moderately easy
  • Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes, one-day course

For Intermediate Hikers:

Encounter diverse flora and fauna (image via Shutterstock)

Baekyangsa Walking Trail Course (8.5 km, one-way )

Be rewarded with sweeping views of Baekamsan Mountain – the whole mountain will look as if it’s been set on fire! On the way, you’ll find the Naejangsa Temple. At last, reach the summit of Sangwangbong Peak. Cherish the sight with Baekamsan Mountain and Ipamsan Mountain in the distance.

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Duration: 6 hours, one-day course

For Expert Hikers:

Challenge yourself by hiking through all 8 peaks! (image via Shutterstock)

Route: Seoraebong Peak – Bulchulbong Peak – Manghaebong Peak – Yeonjibong Peak – Kkachibong Peak – Sinseongbong Peak – Yeonjabong Peak – Janggunbong Peak – Donggu-ri

This course is not for the faint of heart; the ridge trail passes through all the eight peaks of Naejangsan Mountain. Start your course from the Hiking Information Center, through the eight peaks, and back down to Donggu-ri. Immerse yourself completely in nature on this trail, as you glimpse magnificent views of the crimson valleys stretching out endlessly beyond the horizon.

Picture-Perfect Spots for Maple Leaves

Enjoy the marvelous blend of reds, oranges, and yellow-greens! (image via Shutterstock)

Prepare to take pictures everywhere! The kaleidoscope of fall colors are thanks to mostly maple leaves, but you can also find elm, ash and hornbeam adding to the mix. Behold the striking contrast between red-orange maples and yellow ginkgo trees and evergreens against the bright blue sky. Stop by these photogenic spots listed below:

Naejang Temple

Naejangsan National Park: Finding Fall Colors

Naejangsan National Park is hands down one of the most beautiful places in Korea . And I promise, you only need to hike a  little .

Since Naejangsan is probably my umpteenth time talking about autumn in Korea , I’m sure you’ve guessed it’s my favorite season. I’m a pretty visual person, so I find the sudden burst of colors everywhere energizing.

Not to mention the fact that the temperatures tend to be pretty perfect, not too humid and not quite cold just yet. This last fall I’ve tried to take advantage of the beautiful weather, walking outside a bit more, exploring Korea’s mountains, and leaving my windows open for the fresh air.

Naejangsan: Beautiful Even When Raining

One of my friends mentioned that she took her mother to see the fall foliage in Naejangsan. After seeing photos I knew I had to go there myself. Elissa happened to be visiting me that weekend and was kind enough to not mind hopping on another bus to Jeongeup after spending 3 + hours on a bus from Seoul. Apparently, this park is quite famous among Koreans for seeing the fall leaves, but it’s not too famous

Apparently, this park is quite famous among Koreans for seeing the fall leaves, but it’s not too famous overall just yet. Unlike Daedunsan , the cable car ride didn’t have waiting times, and we actually found ourselves with space to ourselves both times.

Naejangsan: Beautiful Even When Raining

What I also loved was that the cable car window was totally open on one side. This way you can see the mountainside and all the colors without a dirty window blocking your view. If you take the cable car, definitely make sure you go to the observatory to see your surroundings. It’s absolutely stunning, even in the rain we had!

If it’s not raining, I recommend going for a bit of a hike . Elissa did a long hike with her friend last year, and she said it was gorgeous! Unfortunately, it was raining pretty bad when we got there, so we opted out of hiking. We missed seeing a lot of the temples and natural structures within.

TOURS THAT GO TO NAEJANGSAN

  • Korea Autumn Foliage Tour from Seoul –  If you’re coming from Seoul and only want to do a day trip, this is a great tour. It might be more cost-efficient depending on your plans. Check dates and details here.
  • Naejangsan tour from Busan – If you’re staying in Busan and have no plans of being in Seoul during the tour dates, then you might want to consider this tour. It’s a pretty long time in the bus (Busan is farther from Jeongeup than Seoul), but I’ve gone on long bus rides to be somewhere for only a few hours before! Check dates and details here.

HOW TO GET THERE

  • Go to Jeongeup Bus Station. There are direct ones from Seoul.
  • You can take the local Bus 171 to 휴게소.버스터미널/ Service Area + Bus Terminal. OR
  • Take a taxi from the bus station to Naejangsan. It should be around less than 10,000 won. We got out and walked when we saw how long the line was.

naejangsan national park tour

Naejangsan is a famous mountain in the Jeolla-do province, and the best mountain in Korea for viewing autumn’s crimson leaves. Inside the park, you will visit the famous Naejangsa temple.

The temple is said to have been built by the Buddhist monk Yeongeunjosa in the year 636 of the Baekje Dynasty with many lovely autumn leaves.

There are about 760 kinds of local plants, designated Natural Monuments, and various wild animals living inside Mt. Naejangsan Park.

Enjoy the scenic hike as you enjoy the hillsides and pathways covered in a multitude of red, orange and yellow leaves.

How to Hike Naejangsan National Park from Jeonju

naejangsan national park tour

Naejangsan National Park is one of the gems of South Korea and is a 76,000 square kilometer park located less than two hours south of Jeonju.

We decided to take a day trip from Jeonju to Naejangsan National Park to hike through the park's famed fall foliage. While we arrived a bit too early for peak colors, we still had a pretty amazing day out in the park all the same!

What You Can See at Naejangsan National Park

Uhwajeong Pavilion at Naejangsan National Park

Naejangsan National Park is famous for several things- Baekyangsa and Naejangsa Temples, Uhwajeong Pavilion, a cable car, and numerous mountain peaks- all specifically in late October and early November for fall foliage thanks to the natural beauty and abundance of gingko and maple trees.

Most of the sights are easily accessible in the park, making this one a destination hotspot for those who simply want to see temples or ride the cable car as well as hike. As such, it is quite popular (and during peak foliage is known to be shoulder-to-shoulder with long waits for cable car rides).

Mountains at Naejangsan National Park

For those who visit this park to hike, you'll thin out from the crowd a fair bit (again, outside of peak foliage, at least) and get stunning views of the mountain range, the nearby lake, and so much more- and that is exactly what we did!

Hiking at Naejangsan National Park

Stairs at Naejangsan

For those who want to hike into the mountains at Naejangsan National Park, we think it is quite worth it- but you have a few considerations to keep in mind.

The park itself consists of eight peaks with a ~11km ridge trail that connects them all together. While you could make a rather large day of it and tackle the entire trail, the intensity of this hike puts most visitors into one of two categories.

Views from Naejangsan National Park, South Korea

The second is for those who want to hike between peaks via the ridge trail. We hiked between Seoraebong to Bulchulbong which was just a kilometer or so but added on nearly two hours of somewhat extreme hiking that wrecked our legs (they really felt like jelly by the end). The reason for this is because the connecting trail is full of steep and narrow metal staircases that are precariously attached to the side of the mountain (plus a few more segments of rocky hiking).

Fall Foliage in South Korea

So while I cannot say if the connection points between the other peaks are as intense as the section between Seoraebong to Bulchulbong, my best speculation is yes- odds are good if you want to tackle the entire 11 km ridge you are looking at a 7+ hour hike in total if not more.

For those who may want to do more, most peaks have trails that take you back down to the temple so you could likely bail at your own discretion, which is something we quite liked about this park. From where we were my best guess would be that the next peak would be another hour, but judging by the state of our legs it likely could've been much longer.

How to Get to Naejangsan National Park from Jeonju

Naejangsan National Park Temple

We decided to visit Naejangsan National Park from Jeonju, and despite being about 50 km away we thought it was rather easy for those wanting to visit by either train or bus.

While trains are relatively frequent, the best way to reach the park, in our opinion, is to instead take a bus from Jeonju to Jeongeup. This bus takes about an hour and leaves quite often from each respective bus station (I believe every 15-20 minutes during the day). As Jeongeup is still a bit far from Naejangsan National Park, you can then take a local bus (information available in Kakao Map app) or a taxi straight to the park. A taxi takes about 25 minutes whereas the bus takes closer to an hour, meaning the taxi splurge could be worth the additional money.

During our visit to the park in late 2019 bus tickets were about 5,000 won per person and a taxi was 15,000 each way- or about $40 for all transit round-trip for two. This could be significantly cheaper for those who catch the bus from Jeongeup as well; however, the extra ~$20 for a taxi was worth it for us to save about an hour of travel time.

Most cars drop you off near the entrance of the park which requires a short walk to get to the gate. From there, you can either pay for a shuttle bus (1,000 won during our visit) to take you to near the temple or walk the ~1 km path. We walked going in to enjoy the fall colors and took the shuttle on the way out.

Overall, our day trip to Naejangsan National Park from Jeonju was a pretty epic outing. In the end, it took us over 10 hours to get to the park, hike for over four hours, explore the temples, and return, and the changing fall colors made for a pretty wonderful ambiance. While we are sad that we missed peak colors, we are a bit relieved to miss the crowds all the same.

Don't miss this one when visiting Korea, especially in the fall!
