Technology has revolutionized the way we travel in countless ways. Paper maps and GPS navigation systems have been replaced by Google and Apple Maps, old-school CDs by music streaming services, and guidebooks by apps that can notify road-trippers of roadside attractions in real time. One thing is certain: the smartphone has made road trips infinitely easier and, arguably, cheaper.

Whether you need a digital road trip planner to map out your next journey or something to help you avoid traffic jams, here are 11 of the best road trip apps to download ahead of your next adventure.

Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers is one of the most practical and popular road trip planning apps out there. Maybe you want to see national parks or the quirkiest roadside attractions. Perhaps you want to stop for the night at an iconic or underrated hotel. You can plan your stops right in the app, adding up to three waypoints for free or 150 with a Roadtrippers Premium account. There are also Basic and Pro memberships that allot you 20 and 50 waypoints per trip, respectively. The higher-tier memberships allow you to collaborate with friends and family and use navigation. The app features lodging, sights, outdoorsy destinations, restaurants, activities, shopping, fuel, and more all around the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The app is free, but you have to upgrade to a membership plan to enjoy all the bells and whistles. The Basic plan costs $40 a year, the Pro plan $50 a year, and the Premium $60 a year. It's available on iOS and Android .

Google Maps

Every road-tripper needs a trusty navigation app in their arsenal, and Google Maps is consistently one of the most — if not the most — downloaded in the U.S. every year. Its dominance can be attributed to how comprehensive its data is, which allows it to generate the very best directions based on distance, road conditions, and traffic patterns.

Google Maps gives you route options and provides accurate estimates of how long it takes to get from A to B. Plus, you can plot several waypoints along your route — be it a mid-morning coffee stop or a hotel for overnighting (you can see reviews right in the app).

Google Maps is free and available on iOS and Android .

Waze is another one of the top navigation apps. With real-time updates that help you avoid traffic jams, construction, and more, it will have you navigating new cities and unfamiliar streets like a seasoned local. It's perhaps a little more proactive than Google Maps in changing up a route when problems arise, and that means Waze users should prepare for their drive to be a little unpredictable.

No one wants to spend hours sitting in traffic instead of exploring, so the fact that Waze collects data from other drivers to streamline the driving experience is a huge help. The app is free and available on iOS and Android .

Paying for fuel can eat up a good chunk of your road trip budget, but GasBuddy can save you a few bucks. The app crowdsources up-to-date fuel prices for more than 150,000 gas stations around the U.S. and Canada. The app also tells you how recent the submission is so you know whether it's outdated.

GasBuddy is not just helpful for finding cheap gas but also for finding gas stations in general (and parking), which can be difficult in foreign territory. The app is free and can be downloaded on iOS and Android . While using it, be a good road-tripper and submit gas prices you see as you travel.

Roadside America

Barry Winiker/Getty Images

The offbeat and kitschy roadside attractions you can find throughout the U.S. are often some of the most delightful parts of a road trip. The Roadside America app helps you find the most unique attractions worth stopping for, like the large sculpture of a cartoon mouse holding a cheese platter in Plain, Wisconsin — where else? — or the decidedly odd larger-than-life-sized three-way electrical plug that rests on a lawn in Philadelphia. The app features museums, murals, tours, quirky restaurants, and photo ops.

Roadside America costs $3 to download, which gets you access to one region in the app. You can purchase more regions for $2 or get access to all of the U.S. and Canada for an extra $7. The app is available only on iOS .

iExit Interstate Exit Guide

Knowing where to stop for road trip snacks, a drive-through latte, or a public restroom can be challenging with all the exit signs whizzing by at 70 mph, but iExit Interstate Exit Guide takes the guesswork out of it. The app will list which exits are coming up on your route, what's there, and what they offer — including food, lodging, fuel, and even hospitals. It pulls fuel prices from OPIS (the Oil Price Information Service) and displays Yelp reviews for businesses.

The app is free to download. Find it on both iOS and Android .

HotelTonight

Even if you've planned out all your stops ahead of time, you might find that you need to pull over for a night unexpectedly. Driving is tiring, and unplanned naps can be life-saving. HotelTonight can help you find accommodations in a pinch. The app offers day-of deals on unsold rooms, and the user-friendly interface means you can book a discounted room in minutes. There are well over 1,000 properties to choose from in cities all over the world, from Mexico City to Jakarta (in case you happen to take your road-tripping global).

It's free to download and available on iOS and Android .

If staying in a tucked-away A-frame cabin, a yurt, or a private guest house in someone's garden is more your travel style than bouncing between hotels, then Airbnb is the ticket. On the Airbnb app, you can search properties (millions in the U.S. alone) on a map and read reviews before you book, which you can do in advance or at the last minute.

The app features not just vacation homes but also activities, so if you're keen to experience a city like a local you can do so via a pottery class or a guided walking tour, for example.

The Airbnb app is free. You can download it on iOS or Android .

Travelers who dream of camping out under the stars should download The Dyrt , a free app that helps you find tent, RV, and cabin sites across the U.S. One of the top camping apps on iOS and Android , it has more than a million registered users who submit reviews, pictures, and tips. On The Dyrt, you get real intel on campsites and a built-in community that makes camping on a road trip especially fun and safe. You can even book some of the campsites right on app.

The app is free, but there's a premium version for $36 a year that allows you to plan trips and search campsites while offline — convenient for remote regions.

What is a road trip without a perfect playlist? Whether you're keen to create a soundtrack of nostalgic singalongs, modern pop songs, or music inspired by your destination, you'll find even the most obscure tunes on Spotify , a catalog of more than 100 million tracks. When you tire of Taylor Swift, you can turn to podcasts or an audiobook to keep you company. Road trips are a great opportunity to delve into a docuseries like "Serial," an all-time favorite.

Spotify is free to download and listen to, but the ad breaks are annoying and streaming can chew through your phone data. A better option is to purchase a premium membership for $11 a month. It's ad-free and you can download music to listen to offline. The Spotify app is available on iOS and Android .

Electric vehicles are increasingly commonplace and great for more environmentally friendly road-tripping. The problem is often finding charging stations, as most EVs can go 100 to 300 miles before they need to be plugged in. PlugShare lists 700,000 charging stations across North America, Europe, and beyond. Users share their reviews of the stations, helping to guide EV drivers to the best, fastest, and most reliable charging spots.

PlugShare is free and available to download on iOS and Android .

President Joe Biden coming to Middletown Saturday; expect road closures, traffic delays

One-minute read.

plan my journey road closures

MIDDLETOWN - Motorists and area residents can expect traffic delays and road closures when President Joe Biden comes to town Saturday for a political fundraiser at the home of Gov. Phil Murphy.

"They can expect road closures," said Deputy Police Chief Paul Bailey. "We're working with our federal, state and county partners in preparation of the visit of President Biden to Gov. Murphy's house."

Bailey would not discuss any details, but said there will be intermittent traffic delays.

The New Jersey Globe first reported that Biden is coming to town Saturday evening for a fundraiser at the home of the governor and first lady Tammy Murphy.

The Murphys reside in a mansion along the Navesink River on Blossom Cove Road, off Navesink River Road and nearby the Navesink Country Club.

Upcoming road construction: How will your commute be impacted?

Odot projects on us 33 and ohio 159.

LANCASTER — The following Ohio Department of Transportation projects could impact your drive.

U.S. Route 33 median improvement - Installation of cable barrier along US 33 in Franklin and Fairfield counties from Gender Road to the emergency turn-around between Hill-Diley and Pickerington Road. Estimated completion is October 2024. New impacts: Motorists can expect shoulder closures along U.S. 33 for the installation of cable barriers.

Ohio 159 bridge replacement - This project includes bridge replacement of the Ohio 159 bridge carrying Ohio 159 over Muddy Prairie Run, just north of Pleasant Valley Road. Estimated project completion is October 2024. New impacts: Ohio 159 is closed just north of Pleasant Valley Road SW for approximately 70 days for bridge replacement. Detour: Ohio 159 to Ohio 56 to U.S. 22 to Ohio 159 and reverse.

Pickerington Road closure

The Fairfield County Engineer’s Office announced that Pickerington Road NW (County Road 20) will be closed between Monday, July 1, and approximately Friday, Aug. 2, for road construction, weather permitting. This closure will take place on Pickerington Road NW between the intersection of Refugee Road and the intersection of Ault Rd.

Road closure in Bloom Township

The Fairfield County Engineer’s Office announced that the following road will be closed for thefollowing dates listed below:

Alspach Road NW (Township Road 182) will be closed through Friday, Aug. 2, for bridge repairs, weather permitting. This closure is on Alspach Road NW between Rockmill Road and Walker Drive. Construction will take place between the addresses of 6630 and 6641 Alspach Road NW.

Another super load to pass through the area

COLUMBUS – The thirteenth of nearly two dozen “super loads,” and second of four loads that exceed 900,000 pounds, will depart the dock site in Adams County on Monday, July 8. The convoy will head to New Albany to deliver the load to the site of the new Intel plant in Licking County.

This load, an air processor known as a cold box used in the silicon chip manufacturing process, measures approximately 23’ tall, 20’ wide, 280’ long, and weighs 916,000 pounds.

The move is scheduled to take more than a week. It will make stops in West Portsmouth, Lucasville, Chillicothe, Rickenbacker, Pickerington, and Pataskala, before being delivered on Tuesday, July 16.

Complete route details can be found at transportation.ohio.gov/superload.

These extra-large loads will have significant traffic impacts as they move. Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the route while the load is moving.

Due to the size of the loads and slow speed of the convoy, moves will begin earlier than previous trips to ensure each move can be completed during daylight hours.

Because of an anticipated increased interest from the public, large crowds are expected along the route. This will lead to additional traffic delays. Safety of the public and those working to move the load is the top priority. Observers are asked to stay out of the path of the transport trucks and work crews and off the sidewalks along the roadway. Spectators should obey orders to move back if instructed to do so.You can find more information, updates, and sign up for email alerts at transportation.ohio.gov/superload.

Listen live to WTOP for traffic updates on the 8s.

Prepare for significant road and sidewalk closures next week in downtown D.C. for the 75th Anniversary 2024 North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit.

It’s the first time in 25 years D.C. has hosted the NATO Summit, and in an effort to keep the event spaces secure for world leaders and other attendees, law enforcement and the D.C. mayor’s office have announced additional security measures that will impact drivers, pedestrians and those riding public transit.

plan my journey road closures

Those closures will be nearby Mellon Auditorium and the White House, as well as around the Washington Convention Center, where the summit will be held.

A couple of Metro stations will be closed temporarily and more than 20 bus routes will be affected. Even still, officials are encouraging those traveling in the area to opt for public transit for traveling through downtown D.C. rather than driving.

“We know that getting through downtown next week will require extra time, patience and planning,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a news conference Monday. “There will be road closures, extra security and delays around the Washington Convention Center and Federal Triangle.”

The summit runs from July 9-11, but closures kick off ahead of time. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Roadway closures start on July 8 as anti-scale fencing is installed.
  • The area around the Mellon Auditorium will be closed on July 9, but it should reopen by the end of the day.
  • Areas around the White House complex will have enhanced security and rolling street closures during the afternoon and evening of July 10.
  • The area around the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library and Mount Vernon Square will be closed from July 8-11.

Most of the closures will go from Tuesday, July 9 through Thursday, July 11.

An intelligence analyst with the FBI said there are no credible threats to the NATO Summit, but it’s all hands on deck for law enforcement working to keep attendees out of harm’s way, among which are 37 world leaders. D.C. police, U.S. Secret Service officers and other agencies are helping to keep the closure points secure.

“It should be lost on no one that D.C. on a normal day is a target-rich environment for potential threat actors,” said Nikki Flores, the intelligence analyst with the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “As such, we would like to remind the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.”

How to prepare

Officials are encouraging anyone headed to D.C. next week to sign up for alerts by texting NATODC to 888-777.

Those alerts will provide information on safety, street closures, weather and transit in real-time.

There’s an interactive map showing the closures on the District’s website.

At the news conference Monday, officials asked people to plan ahead and budget extra time for traveling in restricted zones.

“We are working to minimize these impacts while ensuring the maximum security. We are leaning on Washingtonians to do what they have done time and time again — exercise patience and understand that these impacts are needed to keep both summit attendees visitors and all of our D.C. residents safe,” said D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith.

Closures nearby the Washington Convention Center amid the 2024 NATO Summit in D.C.

Vehicle restricted zones

Drivers headed to a destination within the vehicle screening perimeter will need to enter through a checkpoint.

Ride share vehicles, taxis or food delivery workers will be able to get through too, as long as they get their vehicles screened.

“Please note that not all areas within the vehicle screening perimeter are accessible from every vehicle access point. So we recommend using the access point closest to your destination,” said special agent Matthew Stoller, with the U.S. Secret Service.

Anyone on foot or riding a bike can enter the perimeter from any area; they don’t need to use a checkpoint or have any special credentials.

Pedestrian restricted zones

There are some areas that are also restricted to pedestrians, unless they are event staff or attendees and have the proper credentials.

Personal vehicles won’t be allowed to enter — which includes ride-share, taxi or food delivery drivers.

Trash services and mail delivery will continue in both perimeters during the summit but their schedules will be shifted to on overnight or early in the morning. Those delivery trucks will be screened at New York Avenue NW at 6th Street NW.

Parking, traffic restrictions details on closures

In addition to the planned closures, there could be rolling traffic closures in the area near Rhode Island Avenue, 7th Street, O Street and 10th Street, NW.

Those closures would be aimed at addressing traffic congestion. People on foot would sill be able to pass through.

Near Mellon Auditorium and White House

These streets will be designated as emergency no-parking areas from Saturday, July 6 at 6 a.m. through Wednesday July 10 at 6 a.m. The roads will also be rolling traffic closures from July 6-July 8.

Traffic Plan, Security Map Released for the 2024 NATO Summit

WASHINGTON – Increased local security measures will be in place in the days leading up to, during and immediately following the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington, D.C. July 9-11.

Vehicular, public transportation and pedestrian impacts should be expected in the downtown area around the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library, Mount Vernon Square, Mellon Auditorium and around the White House Complex.

The public security map and comprehensive traffic plan, to include a complete list of parking restrictions, road closures, and maritime restrictions, are available at https://nsse.dc.gov .

Residences and businesses inside the affected areas will generally be accessible, but vehicles and pedestrians may be required to undergo security screening prior to entering. Members of the community are encouraged to plan accordingly and expect delays throughout the week.

“Though Washingtonians are accustomed to the city hosting international events of this magnitude, we strive to effectively communicate any potential impacts to allow people to make any adjustments to their routines,” Matt Stohler, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. secret Service’s Washington Field Office, said. “The U.S. Secret Service and our partners have been actively working with the community to provide the most secure environment while minimizing any impacts to the public.”

“We have a lot of experience hosting large-scale events in DC, and with the support of our federal and regional partners, we are ready to make sure that next week is a safe and smooth experience for the dozens of world leaders who will be here,” DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said. “We’re encouraging residents to plan ahead, sign up for alerts, and leave extra time and have patience if you are moving to or through Downtown.”

Temporary road and sidewalk closures will be in effect intermittently beginning July 8 as temporary security measures including, anti-scale fencing, is installed. Official closures will begin July 10 and run through approximately July 11 in the area around the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library and Mount Vernon Square. Official closures around the Mellon Auditorium will be in place in the morning of July 9 and will conclude late that evening. Enhanced security measures, to include intermittent street closures, around the White House complex will occur in afternoon and evening of July 10.

“We are leaning on Washingtonians to do what they have done time and time again: exercise patience and understand that these impacts are needed to keep summit attendees, visitors and all our DC residents safe,” Chief of the DC Metropolitan Police Department Pamela A. Smith said. “I want to assure all Washingtonians that MPD is prepared for the NATO Summit, and we’ll continue to work closely with our partners to ensure its security.”

The secure areas for the event are divided into a Vehicle Screening Perimeter, shaded in blue on the public security map, and a Pedestrian Restricted Perimeter, shaded in red.

Vehicle Screening Perimeter : Residences and businesses inside the Vehicle Screening Perimeter will be accessible to the public. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to freely enter the Vehicle Screening Perimeter from any area. Vehicles will be permitted to enter the Vehicle Screening Perimeter, though they must enter through a vehicle screening point, which are marked as black circles on the map. Rideshare/taxi drop-off and hot food delivery will be permitted in the Vehicle Screening Perimeter; drivers will just need to enter through a vehicle screening point.

Pedestrian Restricted Perimeter : The Pedestrian Restricted Perimeter will be accessible only to credentialed individuals, such as Summit attendees or staff. Pedestrians must enter through one of the pedestrian checkpoints. Personal vehicles, as well as bicycles and small scooters, will not be permitted to enter the Pedestrian Restricted Perimeter. Rideshare/taxi drop-off and hot food delivery will not be permitted in the Pedestrian Restricted Perimeter.

Trash services, mail and package delivery will continue in both perimeters; however, schedules will be shifted for service to occur in the overnight and early morning hours. All deliveries entering either perimeter must first go through the Remote Delivery Site located at New York Avenue NW at 6th Street NW for screening. The Remote Delivery Site will be open beginning July 10 at 6 a.m. and continue operations until approximately 7:30 p.m. July 11. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license rated for the vehicle they are driving. Upon completion of the screening process, all delivery vehicles will be sealed and must proceed directly to the security checkpoint. If they arrive at the checkpoint with a broken seal, they will be required to return to the screening site for re-screening.

Public transport services operated by the Washington Metropolitan Transportation Agency will also be impacted in the area around the event venues. Customers who use stations or bus routes in this area should allow additional travel time to account for detours and delays. Please visit nsse.dc.gov for the latest impacts.

“Metro is proud to collaborate with our local and federal partners to make sure visitors, residents, and employees throughout the region can reach their destinations safely and efficiently during this very busy time for the District,” Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke said.

District and Federal public safety agencies will utilize a free opt-in text service to provide public safety, street closure, weather, and transit updates throughout the NATO Summit. Residents, businesses, and visitors are encouraged to text NATODC to 888-777 to sign up for real-time updates.

“HSEMA is committed to helping District residents, businesses, visitors, and event attendees prepare for the NATO Summit,” DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency Acting Director Clint Osborn said. “It’s important to have real-time access to information during an event of this magnitude and we strongly encourage our community to sign up for the District’s free text service, putting critical and life safety event updates and information at the public’s fingertips.”

In the lead-up to the NATO Summit, agencies at all levels are working together to prepare for every possible situation. With that said, public safety also heavily depends on help from the public to report suspicious activity. If individuals see something, they say something.

“The FBI Washington Field Office looks forward to working with our federal and local partners to ensure that the 75th NATO Summit is held safely and security,’ FBI Washington Field Office Intelligence Analyst in Charge Nikki Floris said.

The NATO Summit is designated a National Special Security Event by the Secretary of Homeland Security. This designation that is based in part on the event’s significance, size and attendees. Designating an event an NSSE allows for significant resources from the federal government, as well as state and local partners, to be used to ensure a robust security plan is in place.
