How to Not Finish Last in Tour de France Fantasy

Rule your mini-league, or at least avoid ignominious defeat, with these strategies.

109th tour de france 2022 stage 21

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

Don’t be Lee. Sure, he was able to carve nine hours off his sentence by scarfing a bunch of waffles, but it’s far better to just…not finish last.

There are several fantasy games around the Tour, all with different rules, and some of them get a little arcane. We’re focusing on two: the official fantasy Tour from the organizers , and VeloGames’s long-running fantasy competition, simply called VeloGames 2023 for trademark reasons.

How Tour de France Fantasy Works

Both leagues require you pick a certain mix of riders for a balanced team; you can’t go all sprinters, for example.

VeloGames is the simpler of the two: you have a 100-point budget to pick nine riders (which, after the UCI reduced official team sizes to eight, is one more than the teams in the actual race get). Each rider scores points based on his ride on each stage, including finish placing, time in the breakaway (if he joined one), any King of the Mountain (KOM) and intermediate sprint points scored, and overall standings in each of the various jersey competitions.

You also earn points when a teammate of your chosen rider does well. That all sounds complicated, but it’s pretty basic: You pick nine riders you think will find success individually or through their teams, and you’re set with them the whole Tour. There’s no substitutions, even if a rider drops out. If you want to set your team and not check standings daily, this is your league.

The official game from the Tour seems similar on its face: You have a budget (120 stars, which is the currency) to pick eight riders. There are similar points scales for stage finish, KOM, and sprint points, and position in various jersey competitions . You can score points in the combativity classification, but only for the rider awarded each day’s prize; there are no breakaway or teammate points.

The big differences from Velo to the official Tour de France fantasy game:

  • You can swap riders midrace, for 50 credits.
  • You can designate one rider each stage as your Stage Winner Bonus—all points that rider scores that day are doubled.

That requires you to change your designation each stage. If you want to tinker with your lineup like you do with weekly picks for fantasy football, the ASO game is your huckleberry.

(If you really want to nerd out, ProCyclingStats ’s game has more intricate rules and an arbitrage-like theme to it, where you buy and sell riders as they appreciate or depreciate in value. It’s cool, but complex.)

Broad Advice for Tour de France Fantasy Games

Don’t skimp on your gc guy.

The way both games are designed, the favorites for the overall will cost the most points. That’s because it’s difficult, albeit not impossible, to win your mini-league without picking the overall race winner .

We can’t tell you who that’s going to be, but what we can say is this is the one place where you should spend whatever points you think will get you the best possible choice, a.k.a. the rider you really think is going to win. Don’t try to get cute and budget points picking who you think will finish in second and third place. The math of the games is not kind.

Go reliable and versatile on sprinters

This is one place where consistent finishes can outpoint a winner over time. The cumulative point totals with a guy who’s regularly hitting top-five finishes is higher than someone who wins once or twice and is out of the top 10 on other stages.

Good picks here include Wout van Aert, Jasper Philipsen, Mads Pedersen, Biniam Girmay, and Fabio Jakobsen, Julian Alaphilippe, all of whom are contenders for the green jersey and are capable in both field sprints and trickier finishes with small hills.

Don’t get locked in on rider classifications

Because the games are predicated on balanced rosters, each assigns riders to distinct categories: all-arounder/ general classification , climber, sprinter, etc. But that may not match up with their own goals, or your view of how the race will unfold. Julian Alaphilippe may also listed as a contender (because he’s French), but his fifth-place overall at the 2019 Tour notwithstanding, he’s actually a stage hunter : a climber who can sprint.

As you pick, keep your goals and predictions in mind—if you think a climber’s going to win the overall and he’s not listed in the All Arounder group, pick him anyway, and use an All Arounder pick for different purposes.

Check your lineup against confirmed rosters the night before

With COVID still looming, it’s entirely possible someone will positive-test right out of a start spot. Make sure the guys you’re racing are actually in the race. It’s not official, but the most accurate roster list is on ProCyclingStats .

VeloGames Strategies

Use a “barbell” strategy to boost points around your gc contener.

This strategy leverages VeloGames’s teammate points awards. Option 1: pick a low-cost teammate who won’t score his own points, but could be a goldmine of points based on his team leaders. This is a good strategy to fill out a roster if you don’t have a lot of points left after picking GC riders and sprinters. A good option here would be someone like UAE-Emirates Vegard Staeke Langen, a guy doing the thankless grunt work for high-profile team leaders.

Option 2: Pick a versatile, higher-pointed teammate who can also get his own results. A good option here would be Jumbo’s van Aert, a threat in TTs and sprints. Your best bets are teams able to win multiple stages of different types, like Jumbo and UAE Team Emirates, but only if they fit your GC strategy.

Hedge your sprint pick

Fully a third of this year’s stages are, on paper, likely sprint finishes. And breakaway success on flatter stages of the Tour has been abysmal the past decade. The teams are simply too good at timing the catch. So sprinters are going to play a big role this year. Flat stages favor pure sprinters like Caleb Ewan and Mark Cavendish . But more versatile types, like van Aert, merit a look because they can score points in a variety of scenarios.

The best strategy may be to hedge: pick one higher-cost sprinter of one type, and a lower-point sprinter of another as your wild-card selection. Just remember riders who drop out will still keep all points scored to that stage, but are not eligible for teammate points after that.

Roll the dice on breakaways

Breaks are a fool’s game to try to predict, with few exceptions (hello wild card teams). Your best bet this Tour is to go one of two ways with affordable options: with time-trial style guys who will give it a go on transitional stages (neither flat nor mountainous) and also have a shot in the the TT itself, or climber types who will have their shot in the uphill finishes.

In either case, pick from teams that are at the race to focus on stage wins. TT-style riders who are promising selections are Kasper Asgreen and Victor Campenaerts. Climber-break specialists include Simon Yates and Alexey Lutsenko. Riders like Asgreen, Yates, or Lutsenko are also compelling because their teams have multiple stage-win options, meaning you’ll be better positioned for teammate points.

ASO Tour Fantasy Strategies

Maximize your stage winner bonus with the right roster.

The ASO bonus function is a significant potential point booster. So your team should be tilted toward likely stage winners for various situations. Once you’ve got your GC riders selected, go with versatile breakaway threats, like Alaphilippe. And don’t forget to change your designated rider for different types of stages!

Focus on KOMs

Through a quirk, you get awarded the same points total in fantasy for the two highest categories of climb (HC and Category 1) even though it doesn’t do this in the actual race. And there are 12 Category 1 climbs this year, more than any other category. Many of them will be crossed first by breakaways. So pick a climber you think might target both breaks/stage wins and the KOM competition. A few likely options are Giulio Ciccone, Romain Bardet, and Thibaut Pinot.

The Fantasy game of La Vuelta 22 by Tissot launches with the collaboration of Biwenger and Diario AS

fantasy tour by tissot

Biwenger and Diario AS organise, for the second consecutive year, the La Vuelta Fantasy Game by Tissot . This virtual competition allows users from all over the world to compete against each other, forming their own teams with the riders participating in the 77th edition of the Spanish tour .

This will be the second edition of La Vuelta that features an official virtual league . In 2020, the Fantasy Game’s debut brought together over 42,000 users who participated in the competition, with over 19,000 teams participated in the official league and more than 1,800 private leagues .

In order to participate, users must use the app to create a team of eight riders , who will earn points based on their results for each stage. These points will determine the positions of the teams in the Fantasy Game’s different classifications, whether it be in private leagues or with friends , or in the general league where all registered users will be competing.

As an additional experience, a special game mode known as ‘Fantasy Challenges’ will be included. Two stages of La Vuelta will feature classifications that are exclusive only to that day. Users will be able to create a unique team that will only compete during the ‘Fantasy Challenge’ day. For example, for a mountain stage, the user may configure an exclusive team of climbers and compete against the other participants in order to win fantastic prizes. The ‘Fantasy Challenges’ of this edition of La Vuelta will take place during stage 8 ( La Pola Llaviana/Pola de Laviana > Colláu Fancuaya. Yernes y Tameza) ; and during stage 15 ( Martos > Sierra Nevada. Alto Hoya de la Mora. Monachil ).

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, OVER ONE MILLION UNIQUE USERS

With seven years’ experience in the sector, Biwenger has been organising the official Fantasy Football Game for Diario As for four years. In it, fans can create their own teams with La Liga and Champions League stars, as well as participate in other international competitions. It features the participation of over one million unique players and is the game of these characteristics with the most traffic and users in Spain .

Pablo Osorio, Digital Manager of La Vuelta , highlighted that the third edition of the Official Fantasy Game “consolidates the race’s digital growth”. He added that “ the first editions were very well received by the fans and this year, in collaboration with Tissot, we want La Vuelta’s digital community to continue growing ”.

Manuel Lanchazo, General Manager of Biwenger , commented that, the third year of the Official Fantasy Game “ is an exciting challenge whose objective is to satisfy the cycling and fantasy game fans even more ”. “ The first editions were great in every aspect, so much so that many people wish to continue playing the game. That is very encouraging for us, and this year we wanted to take a firm step towards securing the product, hand in hand with La Vuelta ”.

The app is already available so that all users can start creating their teams and try to win La Roja. La Vuelta 22 will take off on the 19th of August from Utrecht and will conclude on the 5th of September in Madrid.

Play Fantasy Tour de France with road.cc!

How is it Tour de France time already? Even as we speak the team mechanics are rolling posh bikes out of the back of lorries in the car parks of nondescript Copenhagen hotels ready for the Grand Départ on Saturday. There's almost a week of flat riding (including a cobbled stage that will no doubt claim one GC rider) until the race hits the Vosges mountains, and then it's a war of attrition for the rest of the three weeks until the race spits out a yellow jersey winner on the Champs Elysées. And if you play our Fantasy Cycling competition you can live every turn of the wheels along the way.

What's Fantasy Cycling?

It's very simple: Pick a team of riders, and if they do well in the race they score points. And the more points they score, the better you do!

Read our Tour de France 2022 race preview

You can play against thousands of other road.cc users, and you can set up private leagues for bragging rights over your friends or work colleagues.

Fantasy TDF pick your team 2022

Once you've picked your team and they all turn out to be duffers like ours (above) inevitably will be, you can transfer in the good riders you should have picked in the first place. You only get 45 transfers over the 21 stages though, so pick wisely! If that sounds like too much hard work for you, there's a purist competition where you just pick a team for the whole thing, like you'd have to if you were managing a real team, and take the hits as they come.

It's not just about getting over the line first: riders score points for the different jersey competitions, KOMs, intermediate sprints... even rolling in dead last. So there's lots to think about. What kind of stage it is, who's in form, who's ALWAYS in the break, who's doing well overall, who's very much not... so many decisions to make.

Register now!

You'll need to be a registered user of the site to play, then all you have to do is head over to fantasy.road.cc to join some competitions and pick your team. The Tour de France is open now, and there's competitions going on throughout the season.

You can play 8 competitions in the year for free, so that would cover all the grand tours and a bunch of other races if you wanted. If you're a road.cc subscriber you can play as many as you like.

Also; 'a cobbled stage that will no doubt claim one GC rider'? Let's not curse Geraint before the whole thing's even started.

Sleeper Picks: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Sleeper Picks

Change Text Size

Dylan Wu and Justin Lower (+6600) … Until last year, a pair of non-winners on the PGA TOUR hadn’t partnered to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but Nick Hardy and Davis Riley broke that seal and with a tournament-record 30-under 258 to boot. Wu and Lower are a combined 0-for-147 on TOUR and that includes a pair of starts in the current format at TPC Louisiana, but they still are getting respectful odds at BetMGM. In their debut in 2022, they placed T10, so there’s been some success, but both have escalated in the macro since. In 2024 alone, Wu has two top 25s, including a season-best T19 at THE PLAYERS Championship, while Lower has a T3 at the Mexico Open at Vidanta and a T4 at last week’s Corales Puntacana Championship. Lower’s exceptional game on approach grades out as 38th on TOUR in greens hit, 14th in proximity and 34th in adjusted scoring. Wu’s balanced attack fortifies the foundation.

Nate Lashley and Rafael Campos (+550) … This isn’t the first rodeo for either of these guys, but it is the first time they’ve collaborated for the tournament – and it’s a smart one. Both are faring nicely in 2024 with three top 25s apiece. Lashley is ninth on the PGA TOUR in fairways hit, T63 in greens in regulation and 30th in Stroke Gained: Tee-to-Green, while Campos is inside the top 60 in distance of all drives, fairways hit and GIR. While their skill sets are similar in terms of ball-striking, the combined moxie they present is a favorable intangible in the team format.

Charley Hoffman and Nick Watney (+550) … If you’re a loyal reader – first, thank you – you also know that I learned my lesson in dismissing Hoffman’s chances in a team competition a while ago, so it is with that amusing experience lingering that it’s time again to lean into the possibilities. He’s regained an edge as he burns a career earnings exemption this year what with a playoff loss at the WM Phoenix Open and a T4 this past Sunday at the Corales Puntacana Championship. This is the seventh time in as many chances that Hoffman and Watney have partnered for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Overall, they have two top 10s among four top 20s. Despite both scuffling upon arrival last year, they rose for a T19, thus proving (again, like Hoffman did with Ryan Palmer at the QBE Shootout the previous December) that experience plays way up in this format.

Odds were sourced at BetMGM.

2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, grades: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry battle back to notch key win in playoff

Sunday's achievement marked the 25th victory of mcilroy's pga tour career and lowry's second in the united states.

Rory McIlroy has accomplished another first on the PGA Tour. Teaming up with Shane Lowry at the 2024 Zurich Classic, the two emerged victorious over Martin Trainer & Chad Ramey in a playoff at TPC Louisiana. McIlroy & Lowry made birdie on the final hole of regulation in the foursomes format to reach 25 under -- the number that Trainer & Ramey held as a clubhouse lead -- before making par on the first extra hole to grab the title.

The victory marks the 25th of McIlroy's PGA Tour career, pulling him past Dustin Johnson and Gary Player. He now stands alongside Tommy Armour, Johnny Miller and Macdonald Smith with that many wins. It also represents Lowry's third win on the PGA Tour and his first in the United States since the 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

With the victory, Lowry gains access to the remaining big-money PGA Tour signature events this season: Wells Fargo Championship, the Memorial and Travelers Championship. He will also benefit next season as he'll be able to start his season at The Sentry.

"It feels absolutely amazing," McIlroy said. "We've had an awesome week here in New Orleans. ... It feels like it's just a bonus to win at the end, but [it] couldn't be better to have this man alongside me to get a PGA Tour win together."

McIlroy & Lowry started the day just off the pace of 54-hole leaders Patrick Fishburn & Zac Blair. The two struggled early in their final round as the competition transitioned to the foursomes format. Lowry put McIlroy in a couple spots of bother on holes Nos. 1 and 3, leading to early bogeys which sandwiched a birdie on the par-5 2nd.

This was nothing new for the Irish team as they became familiar with sluggish starts this week. The duo caught fire a few holes later around the turn rattling off four birdies in a five-hole stretch to catapult themselves back onto the first page of the leaderboard.

The birdies subsided on the difficult back nine, but one from the blade of McIlroy arrived on the par-4 16th. After hitting his tee shot in the fairway bunker with an iron in hand, McIlroy made amends connecting from just inside 20 feet after Lowry hit a pearl from the sand.

McIlroy's short-game prowess was unable to make up for the mistake off the tee on the 17th leading to an immediate bogey; that meant the two needed birdie on the last to force a playoff with Trainer & Ramey. The birdie came courtesy of a stellar spinner from the wedge of McIlroy, which left Lowry little worry over the putt to tie the clubhouse lead.

On the first playoff hole, McIlroy & Lowry were never out of position as they found the fairway and slid into the greenside bunker in two on the par-5 18th. Meanwhile, Ramey & Trainer struggled after their 3-hour layoff, hitting a number of poor shots. Despite this, Trainer still had a par putt from inside 10 feet to extend the playoff, though it never sniffed the hole and left him dejected.

"It's been an amazing week," McIlroy said. "I had never been here before. Shane has been here a handful of times, and we went out to some really nice dinners and people could not have been more hospitable or nicer to us during the week. I'd say we're going to come back and defend next year." Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 Zurich Classic

10. Adam Hadwin & Nick Taylor (-21): The Canadian duo got off to a great start Sunday with birdies on both front-nine par 5s. Getting within two strokes of the lead, Taylor & Hadwin appeared primed to replicate last year's final-round heroics where they fired a 9-under 63. Unfortunately, once they creeped onto the first page of the leaderboard, they began to head in the wrong direction with a bogey on Nos. 9 and 12. Coming off a runner-up finish in 2023, Taylor & Hadwin once again put together a solid showing alongside each other and may make captain Mike Weir consider the partnership in Montreal later this year. Grade: B+

T23. Collin Morikawa  &  Kurt Kitayama (-18): These two were effective together but didn't possess enough firepower. Their first-round four ball consisted of just six birdies, and they added two more in Friday foursomes to make the cut on the number. They remained bogey-free up until the par-3 17th on Saturday, but by then, the peloton had passed them. Kitayama remains solid from tee to green while Morikawa continues to move in the right direction with his game. Grade: C+

T23. Patrick Cantlay  &  Xander Schauffele (-18): Given their history in both this event and national team competitions, Schauffele & Cantlay disappointed. They came into the week as the betting favorites and held a share of the lead through 35 holes thanks to a massive effort in Friday foursomes. Only then did the struggles begin as the two made bogey to polish off their second rounds, fell flat during Saturday's four ball format and were too far behind to make any noise Sunday. They are both approaching two years since their last wins. Grade: C-

MC. Sahith Theegala  &  Will Zalatoris (--): This new team was solid in the opening round with a 7-under 65 but back tracked in foursomes. It's not all that surprising given the fresh nature of the relationship and the time it often takes for players to get comfortable with one another in foursomes. Both players are in fine form so we shouldn't put too much stock into their early exit. They could conceivably be teammates again on Team USA for the 2024 Presidents Cup this upcoming fall. Grade: F

Playoff update

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy are in the greenside bunker in two although McIlroy may have an awkward stance for what would otherwise be a pretty standard up-and-down. Meanwhile, Ramey blasts their second wayyyyy left. They might be pin high but about 50 yards away with little green to work with. Advantage McIlroy/Lowry.

Let's do this

Playoff format.

The two teams will play 18-9-18-9 (Foursomes-Fourball). Both of these teams made birdie on 18 in regulation in the final round in the foursomes format. If they tie, they will head to the par-3 9th and play four-ball (the format from Rounds 1 and 3).

McIlroy/Lowry tie clubhouse lead at 25 under

A birdie on the last will force a playoff between McIlroy/Lowry and Trainer/Ramey. Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn need eagle on the last to join the party.

Blair/Fishburn make a mess of 17

Well, that may do it for this team. They make their second double bogey on a par 3 and it will be the final nail in the coffin. They drop two off the lead and will need eagle on the last to join a playoff. Meanwhile, Shane Lowry has…oh, I don't know…2 feet for birdie on 18 to tie Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey at 25 under.

McIlroy/Lowry bogey

Not a great hole from Shane Lowry on 17. He bails out way right to avoid the water and puts McIlroy in a pickle. He did well to give Shane a par look from 15 feet, but he was unable to convert. The two head to 18 where they MUST birdie to tie the clubhouse lead.

Rory's putt on 16

Rory rolls one in.

The Irishmen are tied for the lead! Rory McIlroy rolls one in after Shane Lowry hit a great approach from the fairway bunker to reach 25 under. That may spell the end of Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey's chances in the clubhouse. Meanwhile, Zac Blair misses a 10-foot birdie bid on 15 which would have pushed them to 26 under. The three teams are tied at the top.

Good finish upcoming

The birdies are coming from the final few groups. Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry have gotten to 24 under. Lowry just missed an 8 footer to tie the lead (see below). Ryan Brehm has knocked in two birdies in a row to get to 24 under while Zac Blair faces a putt to get to 26 under a hole behind.

Here they come!

Blair/fishburn drop two.

That's what can happen in alternate shot. Zac Blair finds the water on No. 9 and then misses a 6-foot putt for bogey. They are now 24 under and one behind the clubhouse leaders who are sitting pretty. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have tacked on three straight birdies and eye a fourth on the par-5 11th which would push them to 24 under.

Back-to-back birdies

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy take advantage of the par-5 7th and tack on another on the par-4 8th. They are now 22 under and three off the lead in the clubhouse (and in their group).

Fishburn flagging pins!

Clubhouse leaders, ramey/trainer post clubhouse lead.

The two are 25 under and one clear of the field.

Ramey/Trainer look to post

The hottest players on the golf course are coming up on their final hole. The two have gotten to 24 under which is now one behind Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair and they will aim to match them and post the clubhouse lead at that very number. They are 8 under and would match the tournament low in alternate shot should they birdie 18.

Shane struggling

The team of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have carded two bogeys in their first three holes in large part because of Shane Lowry. A poor drive on No. 1 leads to a bogey and a poor tee shot and short missed putt on No. 3 leads to another. They made birdie on No. 2, but they are now four adrift from the two teams at the top.

Two at the top

Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey have joined the lead at 23 under. The two are out in front on the golf course and have gotten to 7 under through their first 13 holes. That is an incredible round in foursomes and they will hope to tack on probably two more birdies to post 25 under.

McIlroy/Lowry get underway

Let's see what the overnight betting favorites can do. They start the day two behind the leaders after rounds of 61 and 64 in the four-ball format. The two shot 2-under 70 in foursomes on Friday and will probably need to improve upon that given the crowded nature of this leaderboard. I'm keeping an eye on Lowry's putter as either a catalyst or hindrance to this squad.

Cantlay/Schauffele get within four

Can the 2022 champions be the team to post a score? A birdie on No. 11 gets them to 19 under and four behind the leaders. They have seven holes left and would love to add maybe four more birdies to get to that 23-under number and force the leaders to post something under par on difficult, windy day.

Here they come

Chesson Hadley and Greyson Sigg turn in 5-under 31 and are now within two of Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn. 5 under is no small feat in alternate shot and they will now have a chance to post something for the leaders to look at. The record in foursomes in 63 shot a couple times last year.

Sigg/Hadley showing the way

The Georgia Tech and Georgia duo has creeped inside the top five thanks to a fast start. The two are now 4 under through their first six holes and only three behind Fishburn and Blair at 23 under.

Today's forecast

Weather update.

The wind is up and it looks like some scary clouds might be rolling into the area. Rain is expected around 2 p.m. local, but hopefully it will skirt past without any delays. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay meanwhile are hot out the gates with a pair of opening birdies to get within five strokes of the leaders.

Cantlay/Schauffele in foursomes

The two have carded rounds of 63-66-66 in their last three foursomes rounds in this tournament. Once again it appears the easier four-ball format will be the death of this team as they aimed to win their second title in the last three seasons. They begin the day seven strokes off the pace and, who knows, if they can shoot something like 63 again maybe they have an outside chance.

Final-round action underway

The teams transition to foursomes (alternate shot) for the deciding final round at TPC Louisiana. This traditionally favors the stronger teams which is music to the ears of the betting favorites Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy. They won't go off for a little while, so in the meantime let's see if Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele can make a push.

The Tour de France and Tissot: celebrating a legacy of timekeeping and innovation

Tissot and A.S.O. are proud to celebrate their enduring association on the occasion of the grand announcement event of the Tour de France 2024 route.

18/07/2023 - Tour de France 2023 - Etape 16 - Passy / Combloux (22,4 km CLM) -

Tissot stands as the Official Timekeeper for cycling races organized by A.S.O. such as La Vuelta a España, Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, Paris-Roubaix and Paris-Nice, keeping and consistently reinforcing the robust global relation between the two entities. While each race has its own particular significance, the Tour de France unmistakably stands out as the most emblematic cycling event worldwide. Tissot’s bond with cycling began organically and became more official in the 1980s when Tissot first took on the mantle of Official Timekeeper of the Tour de France. The relationship with A.S.O. first began between 1988 and 1992, which was further cemented in 2016 until today and for the foreseeable future. The Tour de France is a month-long odyssey, going through the diverse terrains and picturesque landscapes of France, where each stage signifies a unique challenge, a different story. Each milestone holds significance.

Timetrial’s Anniversary, the moment of truth   In cycling, minutes and seconds are the unit for measuring athletic power. It is during a time trial stage that pure strength is assessed: alone on the road, alone against the clock, a champion in his hour of glory has the opportunity to make a significant break and completely shake up the hierarchy. The exercise first took place in 1934, in an 83-kilometre time trial, in which Antonin Magne completed his recital in yellow. But the Tour can also be overturned by a performance that changes the course of a lifetime. Conquering the Tour at the very last moment was Greg LeMond's crowning achievement, when he won the overall classification with an 8" lead over his rival Laurent Fignon in 1989. Since then, Cadel Evans has also turned the tide in the final time trial, finally bringing victory to Australia in 2011. In 2020, Tadej Pogacar added a new country, Slovenia, to the list of Tour de France winners, just as his compatriot Primož Roglič was about to do. The coup de force on the Planche-des-Belles-Filles, a strong duel with the Swiss watch as referee, earned its place among the best moments of the Grande Boucle's history

Elevating Excellence, Year after Year   Tissot's task is intricate and demanding. They meticulously monitor classifications, keeping an eye out for unexpected events like falls, breakdowns, or penalties. The Tour is a web of races within races, nuanced standings, and ever-shifting positions, all of which Tissot must flawlessly track and communicate. Thankfully, their wealth of experience in timing cycling races ensures they are adept at navigating these complexities, allowing fans worldwide to immerse themselves in the drama, confident in the knowledge provided by Tissot. From 1948's photo finish system to Tissot's 1970s live time trials, timekeeping evolved rapidly. The 1980s introduced photoelectric cells for sprint speeds, and 1991 transitioned from silver to digital film. By 1992, real-time broadcasting was achieved, and precision reached 1,000 images per second by 1995. Transponders in bike frames were introduced, with Photo Finish achieving 10,000 images per second by 2014. Integrated with the Precision Time Protocol, synchronisation hit accuracies of a thousandth of a second. Today's system distributes real-time data across multiple platforms, with 8-15 timekeepers ensuring precision for every rider's position and speed.

Special Edition Watches representing Tours Spirit   Cycling's spirit and the glory of the peloton's heroes resonate with Tissot. Every year, in close collaboration with A.S.O., Tissot proudly launches a new T-Race Cycling watch, meticulously designed to reflect the different Tours’ essence. These timepieces represent the various tours, combining the Swiss Made quality with each event's spirit, serving as tangible reminders of these landmark events and precious memories for every cycling fan.

fantasy tour by tissot

To New Beginnings and Long-Standing Partnerships   The symbiotic relationship between Tissot and the Tour de France remains unshaken, year after year. Our enduring partnership stands because of shared values and passion, a commitment to precision and dedication, and moments filled with emotion and memories. Each year, in order for the cyclists to push their limits on every stretch and turn, every second is crucial. And for Tissot and A.S.O., each moment of the Tour represents an opportunity to celebrate achievements, milestones, and the shared emotions of the global community. As we embark on yet another exhilarating journey with the Tour de France 2024, joins us to celebrate not just the race, but the stories, the triumphs, and the indomitable human spirit.
