Our Experience: June is a great time to visit Italy for good weather; however, the cities can get really hot. We spent a lot of time in Rome and on the Amalfi Coast in early June. While we had sunny days the whole trip, we definitely appreciated indoor seating and museums during the heat of the day.

In addition, it was much more crowded than what we experienced in Italy in May. Based on our experience, we suggest doing outdoor city activities in the mornings to beat the heat and the crowds.

June is the start of what is technically the start of summer in Italy, although – as you know if you’ve been following along – the tourist high season is already in full swing by this point. The weather in May is so reliably good that it’s now firmly in the high season, which means that in June the high season is pretty much at its peak.

What does that mean, exactly? It means that the crowds will be at their largest and prices will be at the highest points they’ll reach all year. The weather will continue to get hotter as the summer goes on, but June temperatures throughout Italy are already plenty warm.

If you’re traveling to Italy in June, here’s what you need to know about weather and holidays.

As mentioned, the temperatures in May have been warm enough in recent years – and predictably so – that by June it often feels like summer is already well underway. The biggest holiday in June is right at the beginning of the month – the Festa della Repubblica on June 2nd. This national holiday celebrates the founding of Italy as a unified republic (which only happened in the 19th century), and there are typically big parades and fireworks displays in cities throughout the country. Because it’s a national holiday, some attractions may be closed, and transportation will be operating on a reduced holiday schedule.

Other events that take place in June include the start of Verona’s annual summer opera festival and patron saint feast days in Rome, Florence, Turin, and Genoa. Spoleto’s Festival of Two Worlds often begins in June, and Florence’s medieval Calcio Storico (Historic Soccer) match usually takes place in June, too. There are many additional local festivals during the summer that have roving dates – sometimes they’re in June, sometimes they’re not – so it’s always a good idea to check in with the local tourist information office when you arrive in a town to find out whether anything’s on the calendar while you’re there.

Why should you go to Italy in June?

June trips to Italy are sun-soaked, ideal for beach visits or hikes through the Tuscan hills, and that glorious weather makes it easy to see why this is such a popular month to be in Italy. The bigger crowds and longer lines to get into main attractions, however, aren’t to everyone’s liking. Visiting Italy in June means that you need to be prepared for – and comfortable with – crowds.

Going to Italy in June also means you’re going to be spending more than if you went in, say, the winter or spring, so you’ll need to be prepared for that, too. Demand drives up prices, and everything from airfare to hotel rooms to tours are more expensive in the high tourist season. Budget travelers will have a harder time making their euro go further in June (and the rest of the high season), unless you avoid the main tourist cities altogether.

August is the traditional Italian holiday month, when basically the whole country (and, really, most of Europe) goes on vacation, but that doesn’t mean the beaches are empty in June. You’re competing with every other vacationer in Italy for space on the beach and hotel rooms nearby, and on weekends you’ll also be competing with Italians who just want a break from the city – so book lodging well in advance.

The bottom line is that if budget isn’t your primary limiting factor, if you don’t mind crowds, and if you thrive in warm climates, then June in Italy can be fantastic. I do recommend booking things like hotel rooms and entry tickets to things like the Uffizi Gallery in Florence or the Vatican Museums as far in advance as you can to avoid waiting in long lines. And don’t forget your sunscreen.

If you plan on visiting Italy in June, booking your airfare and lodging as soon as possible is important. June is one of Italy’s busiest months for tourism, with millions of visitors flocking to the country to enjoy the warm weather, stunning beaches, and cultural attractions.

Delaying your booking can lead to a scarcity of available options and higher prices. To ensure you get the best deals and can stay in the accommodations that fit your preferences, it’s essential to book your airfare and lodging early.

In addition, I recommend that you book as many attraction tickets ahead of time too. The main attractions have dedicated time slots which limits the number of people that can enter on a daily basis, so don’t miss out.

Furthermore, book your restaurant reservations before you leave for your trip.

Weather in Italy in June

June is a beautiful time to visit Italy as the weather is generally warm and sunny but not as scorching hot as it can get in July and August. In most parts of the country, the average daytime temperatures range between 22-28°C (72-82°F), making it perfect weather for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Define what hot means to you as well. I am typically always cold, so June is a good month for me, but it may be too hot for some visitors.

The weather can be a little cooler and occasionally rainy in the northern regions, like Milan and Venice, while it can be more humid in the southern areas, like Rome and Naples.

Checking the local weather forecast before your trip is always a good idea, especially if you intend to travel to higher altitude regions where the temperature can drop at night.

Weather in Rome in June

In June, the weather in Rome is hot enough to cook an egg on the sidewalk (but please don’t try this). You can expect plenty of sunshine and high temperatures during the day, so it’s essential to stay hydrated and slather on the sunscreen.

But don’t worry, the evenings can be quite pleasant and perfect for sipping a spritz or enjoying some gelato as you take in the beauty of the Eternal City.

Just remember to pack light and bring your favorite pair of sunglasses, because you’re going to need them!

Best Places To Visit in Italy in June

Where to visit in Italy in June will depend on what you like to go and also your heat resistance.

I personally recommend visiting Southern Italy if traveling in June, but avoid tourist traps.

Southern Italy

Places like Capri, Positano and The Almafi Coast will be expensive during this time, so it is wise to stay in smaller beach towns where you can grab a ferry.

Some towns I recommend are:

Sicily is a fantastic destination in June as well. I t is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and Sicily is known for its beautiful beaches , ancient ruins, and delicious cuisine.

You can take advantage of the pleasant weather, explore historic locations like the Valley of the Temples and the town of Taormina, and savor the regional cuisine in June.

Lesser Known Southern Cities to Visit

Matera : Located in the Basilicata region, Matera is a unique town known for its ancient cave dwellings and historic center. In 2019, Matera was named the European Capital of Culture, and it has since become a popular destination for travelers. Despite its growing popularity, Matera remains a relatively affordable destination compared to other Italian cities.
Tropea: Tropea is a beautiful seaside town in the Calabria region, known for its stunning beaches, historic center, and delicious cuisine. It’s a popular destination for Italians but not as well-known among international travelers, making it a more affordable option.
Otranto: Otranto is a charming town in the Puglia region, known for its beautiful beaches, historic center, and picturesque harbor. It’s a popular destination for Italians but not as well-known among international travelers, making it a more affordable option.
Cilento: Cilento is a beautiful region in the Campania region, known for its stunning coastline, picturesque villages, and beautiful national park. It’s a less touristy destination than other parts of Southern Italy, making it a more affordable option.

Northern Italy in June

Portofino is one of the cities in northern Italy that is on my bucket list! The region of Portofino would be great if you wanted to avoid some of the South’s crowds and enjoy milder weather.

Staying in a more reasonably priced nearby town is a great idea if you want to visit Portofino in June. The Italian Riviera’s Portofino is a small, charming fishing community renowned for its vibrant architecture, lovely harbor, and breathtaking views.

Even though Portofino is a well-liked tourist destination, lodging there can be quite pricey, especially during the busiest travel times.

One choice is to stay in Santa Margherita Ligure, which is close by and only a few kilometers from Portofino. Santa Margherita Ligure is a quaint town with a lovely harbor, vibrant buildings, and a wide selection of stores and eateries to discover.

It is less expensive than lodging in Portofino itself, and it provides quick access to Portofino via bus or boat.

Another choice is to book a hotel in Rapallo, which is a little further away from Portofino but still easily accessible.

The larger town of Rapallo has a long promenade, a charming old town, and a lot of lodging and dining options.

In addition to being more reasonably priced than lodging in Portofino, it provides simple access to nearby cities like Genoa, Camogli, and Santa Margherita Ligure.

What to Pack for Italy in June

What I love about traveling in the summer is that we get to pack fewer bulky items. This also increases our chances of flying with only a carry-on.

Crazy? Too soon? Okay, I always check a bag when I travel to Italy , but packing for the summer is far superior.

Lightweight Clothing: Italy can be quite warm in June, so be sure to pack lightweight clothing such as t-shirts, shorts, dresses, and skirts. Bring comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing and sandals for the beach.
Sun Protection: The sun can be strong in Italy, so it’s important to pack sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. If you plan to visit the beach, bring a swimsuit, a cover-up, and a beach towel.
Layers: While it can be hot during the day, temperatures can drop at night, especially in higher altitude areas. Pack a light jacket, a sweater, or a scarf to layer up if needed.
Umbrella: June is also when Italy occasionally experiences showers of rain. In the event of unforeseen rain, an umbrella or a raincoat can be useful.
Don’t forget to pack a camera or a smartphone to capture the breathtaking views of Italy. If you want to be able to charge your electronics, don’t forget to pack a travel adapter.

What to wear in Italy in June

Your activities will determine what you should wear a lot. Will you be spending more time at the beach or will you be exercising a lot?

The most important thing is to wear comfy walking shoes. This refers to my white Adidas tennis shoes or my white Vert shoes. Along with flip flops, I’ll bring a white wedge sandal for the evening.

I dress comfortably for the day by donning a tank top or t-shirt with shorts. Because I easily get cold, I always bring a lightweight cardigan.

A crossbody bag and fashionable sunglasses are essential.

Is there ever a bad time to visit Rome? Due to the extreme crowding and heat, July and August can be challenging.

Rome is a popular destination in June and with good reason. There are numerous events and festivals happening throughout the month, and the weather is typically warm and sunny.

However, it’s also one of the busiest travel seasons, so popular attractions might be crowded and hotel and flight costs might be higher than at other times of the year.

June has a few Italian holidays that you may get to experience. Here are the main holidays to look out for:

Republic Day (June 2nd)

This national holiday takes place each year. It celebrates the day that Italy voted to become a republic instead of being under a monarchy. Most locals have off of work and celebrate with military parades, ceremonies, and laying a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Rome.

June Solstice (June 21)

The dates vary slightly each year. The June solstice often is accompanied by festivals and local events all over the country. Check the lineup of the event for the Italian destination you’re visiting to find out what there is to do.

The Feast of St. John (June 24)

This public holiday takes place each year in Genoa, Turin, and Florence. The holiday is in honor of St. John, also referred to as John The Baptist. If you’re in Florence, there is a parade that takes place in the center of city. During the evening, they put on a firework show over the Arno River. Turin and Genoa hold a festival that lasts two days and involves parades, bonfires, sporting events, and music.

The Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul (June 29)

This holiday is celebrated in Rome and is meant to honor the Catholic saints Paul and Peter. There are religious rituals going on throughout the city, many of which are led by the Pope. Fairs, fireworks, and musical performances can also be seen throughout the city. Many businesses are closed during this day as well.

There are plenty of events going on in June. If you’re visiting, here are the ones you may want to experience:

This event takes place from June 18th until June 20th. It happens in Genzano which is outside of Rome . During this time, large portions of the area are covered in flower arrangements that look like intricate paintings. It started in the 18th century and finishes off with a bishop-led parade before sunset.

Pizza Festival

This festival ends on June 5th, so try and catch it if you’re visiting Italy early in the month. It takes place outside of Naples in Vulcano Buono. Renowned pizza makers from around the country come and compete by making pizzas from different categories. Visitors can attend and try the pizzas along with coffee and dessert. Game of The Bridge

This festival takes place in Pisa on June 26th. More than 700 participants dress in costumes from the 15th century, and play fight to gain possession of the bridge. There are thousands of onlookers and the event starts off with a parade.

San Gimignano Medieval Festival

Celebrating its medieval past, this town throws a festival that is complete with street theater and a joust. It takes place on June 18th and 19th, with Sunday finishing up with a parade full of costumed locals.

MUV Music & Digital Art Festival

From June 1st to the 5th each year, Florence hosts an electronic music festival. Aside from musical performances, there are workshops and art installations. Typically, there are more than 50 musical sets and DJs to see.

Battle of Flowers

Flower-lovers will want to attend this annual event in Ventimiglia. It takes place from June 18th to 19th, and is a celebration of flowers. There is dancing, a parade, music, and a showering of flower buds all over the streets.

Festa della Sensa

Taking place in Venice on June 5th, this festival celebrates the city’s marriage to the water. There’s a parade on the water, a market, a procession through St. Mark’s Square, and a Venetian rowing competition.

Opera Festival

This event takes place in Verona from June 17th until September 3rd. All of the performances take place in Verona’s ancient theater which is over 2,000 years old.

Festa del Grillo

Happening in Florence, this festival takes place in Cascine Park on June 2nd. The park is filled with artificial crickets that are meant to represent good luck. You can buy them and listen to them tweet all around the park. The entire day is filled with entertainment and concerts throughout the park too.

Foligno’s Joust of the Quintana

This joust tournament features ten 10 knights who compete in a small ring on June 18th. There are events and parades going on throughout the day. And, there are smaller jousts happening on the days leading up to the main event.

The coast along Cinque Terre is absolutely dazzling during June. A lengthy road trip is one of the best ways to explore. However, Vernazza makes the list as one of the top destinations to visit. It’s one of the most authentic fishing villages in the region, and is free of car traffic. It’s famous for the incredible houses there. Make sure to visit Doria Castle, Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia, and the Sanctuary of Madonna di Reggio. The hillside is full of vineyards for lazy afternoons of wine tastings. And, the beach features a protected harbor where you can lounge and watch the ocean waves.

San Gimignano

This hillside town is a popular, World UNESCO Heritage Site. The entire town features Gothic and Romanesque architecture, and is filled with history. There are 14 different towers to visit, and the bruschetta here is world renowned. There are plenty of churches and museums to explore too. It’s small so it makes a great day trip.

As one of Italy’s most famous cities, you can’t skip Rome on a June trip. It will be overflowing with tourists but also bursting with excitement and culture. Make sure to visit the obvious monuments like Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. However, don’t forget to wander the cobblestone streets and make plenty of stops for gelato. Hang on the Spanish Steps when you need a break from walking, or pop into one of the many museums to cool down. The nightlife in Rome is incredible, so don’t forget to put on your dancing shoes once the sun goes down.

Lago di Braies

Located in northern Italy, this turquoise lake is absolutely gorgeous during the summer. The dazzling water reflects the towering mountains that surround it, making photo opportunities endless. Visitors tend to hike around the area, rent wooden boats to paddle across the lake, and view the historic church. The crowds here aren’t too overwhelming, and the lake is a great option for cooling off on hot, June afternoons.

Located on a volcanic mound, this clifftop village is a must-see. There’s a cathedral in Orvieto that is over 800 years old and is one of the top attractions. While you’ll have to travel quite far uphill, the views are certainly worth it. The little town is a great place to wander around when the weather is nice. Just make sure to try some of the authentic, Italian food in one of the outdoor cafes.

A great way to explore the city and the surrounding hillsides is by bicycle. There are quite a few places where you can rent one.

Naples is full of significant history with its city center being deemed a World UNESCO Heritage Site. There are castles, bustling markets, and cobblestone alleyways that will transport you back in time. This city is said to have some of the best pizza in Italy, and the world. Plus, the entire town is known for its foodie culture so make sure to eat plenty of meals while you’re visiting.

This city is one of the most fashionable in Italy. Wander around Milan and take a look at all of the latest summer fashion trends, or do some shopping yourself. You may want to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie, and Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Rent a bike and take your own tour around the city to see churches historic monuments, and the city shopping areas.

Located in the middle of the Amalfi Coast, this gorgeous town thrives in the warm weather. Wander the cobblestone streets, pop into a cute cafe, and soak up the views of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Visit the marinas for a swim, rent a bicycle to explore, or just lounge around and drink limoncello.

Venice is a maze of cobblestone streets, quaint cafes, historic buildings, and shops. You’ll get lost along the canals but this is the best way to explore. Take a romantic ride on the gondola or find some shade in an unassuming art gallery. There are plenty of gelato stops around the town so you can stop off for a cool snack. Make sure to visit the attractions including; Saint Mark’s Basilica, Rialto Bridge, the Jewish Ghetto, and Doge’s Palace.

This historic epicenter is a World UNESCO Heritage Site for good reason. The town was destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius and still displays relics from the past. Make sure to check out the body casts that were preserved by the ash from the volcanic eruption, as they are one of the main attractions. You’ll most likely encounter crowds in June but it’s certainly worth it.

No trip to Italy would be complete without snapping a classic photo in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Watching the crowds pose with the tower on their back or the tip of their finger is a pretty funny sight. You won’t be able to help it, and will probably join them for a silly photo of your own. Once you’re done with the photo shoot, grab some pizza in one of the nearby cafes.

This pretty city is where Romeo and Juliet takes place. Recreate a romantic scene of your own on a warm, June night exploring. Piazzale Castel San Pietro is the best spot to watch the sunset, and the Roman Amphitheatre is one of the more classic works of architecture you should check out.

Italy has one National celebration during the month of June: la Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day), on the 2nd of June.

This is a day off for locals who tend to make the most of the weather with day trips and excursions.

If planning on train or bus travel on this day, book in advance as the demand will be high. Expect traffic on the main roads.

Some attractions stay open on this day but many close. Double-check your specific plans if in Italy on this day.

On the 29th of June, Rome has an additional festivity: the day of its patron saints Peter and Paul.

This day is usually marked with fireworks and can cause closures of some city attractions.

What to book in advance in Italy in June

June is very busy in Italy and early booking of accommodation and attractions is a must.

I recommend the following attractions as soon as your trip is confirmed:

Last Supper, Milan : often booked out weeks in advance, book as soon as your trip is confirmed via GetYourGuide here , which offers excellent cancellation options

Colosseum, Rome : the official site gets booked out months in advance (although you may be in luck if only looking for one or two tickets). However, guided tours are usually available on GetYourGuide here

Vatican, Vatican City, Rome : tickets sell out fast and operate on a time slot system. You can get them on the official site of the museums or choose a guided tour via GetYourGuide here : I highly recommend them as the museums are vast and easily overwhelming, without a guide.

Galleria Borghese, Rome : I recommend you book with at least a couple of weeks’ notice to get a decent time slot. The official website is here .

Train tickets : I recommend you book early high-speed trains to get seats together and the best price.

June in Italy with kids

June is a wonderful time to visit Italy with kids .

The weather is perfect for gelato but not hot enough yet pose a problem to the youngest member of the family and their delicate skin unless you go to the beach: in that case, sun protection is a must!

The best places to visit in Italy with kids are those close to the sea, although sightseeing is also possible.

Although the weather in May in recent years has felt like summer, the high summer season doesn’t technically start until June – and the word “high” applies to the temperature in June, too. No matter what time of year you’re talking about, the mercury typically rises as you head south in Italy. In June, that means that if it’s hot in northern Italy then it’s even hotter in the south. June isn’t quite the time when Italians with the means to do so abandon the cities for the cooler mountains or beaches, but it’s definitely common for locals to take off for weekends in the countryside more often starting in June. If you hadn’t already been taking advantage of the beach-friendly weather of May, then you will be in June. This is when beach resorts up and down both coasts (and around all of Italy’s major islands) start to get crowded with Italians and foreigners alike. It’s worth noting that in many cases, humidity comes along with the higher temperatures throughout Italy. High humidity can make an otherwise-reasonable 85°F feel more uncomfortable, especially when you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. Even if you don’t think you’re susceptible to problems with hot weather, you may want to confirm that your hotel has air conditioning just in case. Temperatures in June vary depending on where you are in Italy, but as a general rule of thumb these are the ranges:

The influx of visitors means higher prices on everything – including airfare to Italy , hotels in Italy , Italy tours – even the cheap hostels in Italy don’t seem so cheap come summer. Not only that, it’s the sheer number of people trying to get in to see the same attractions that causes those notoriously long lines outside things like the Vatican Museum or the Uffizi. Still, there’s a reason why so many people visit Italy in June, and it’s also easy to figure out – the weather is often outstanding. There’s nothing like seeing Tuscany’s rolling hills, still green from spring rains, glowing on a summer afternoon – or the way the white marble Duomo in Milan seems to be lit from within on a bright day. UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

We had a great five days with our tour director Stefano, and our excellent driver Luigi. Stefano was outstanding at his job, he was very informative and always patient, and kept everything running smoothly. We appreciated how he took care of all the details, even writing out the city bus instructions on our itinerary in the lobby of the hotel in Mestre! This tour is an excellent way to see a lot in a short period of time. We visited many more towns than I would’ve ever seen if I’d planned it myself! The hotels were both clean and convenient, and we were lucky to have a small group on the bus, so we had lots of room to stretch out.

I am giving this review 4 stars because I did enjoy my time in Italy because I am the type of person who would not let disappointments hinder my enjoyment of a trip. To start with I was not picked up at the airport as promised, I realize my flight was approx. 45 minutes late ( the lateness was due to the airline while we were already sitting on the runway). I arrived at 10:15, collected my luggage and headed to the meeting point, there was no one there with my name on a placard, I walked around checking different places close to my meeting point, finally at 11:25 I took a taxi that cost me 57 euros(82 CAD) for the trip to the hotel that took about 45 minutes, when I arrived the guy on the desk told me they were looking for me at the airport ??? My itinerary did disclose that the day excursion to Capri is not included between certain months, although I don't remember paying less than someone who went in October and did get this excursion. While travelling to Sorrento the representative we had on the bus informed us we could book a trip to Capri for 165 euros (wow), so I am wondering why this tour group could offer the trip but my booking agency could not, I wandered around Sorrento on the main street and came across 2 companies offering the trip to Capri for 60 euros, remember that folks if you have the time to find a local company, I would highly recommend it. Another contention with me was the solo supplement, while I was investigating this trip there was no mention of extra supplement until I hit the Book Now button, I found this to be deceiving. I paid $945 for solo supplement for a 12 day trip, of course you meet people while travelling and someone shared with me that she was doing the 9 day portion of the trip and was paying $400 USD, now I totally understand the exchange rate between CAD and USD but I really think another $445 for 3 extra days is extravagant to say the least, this is a Canadian company taking advantage of Canadians. When we returned to Rome during our travels we stayed at the same hotel I was at on my first night in Rome where I had a double room, it was comfortable by most standards. I cannot say the same for my return stay, I was in a single room and may as well been sleeping on the floor, the bed was ROCK hard. I really enjoyed Rome and have plans to return but definitely not with this company and will not use this company to book any further trips. You have disappointed me Wingbuddy and I won't give you the opportunity to do so in the future, so this is good-bye.

A Taste of Italy: 8 Days

MIRACLE OF ASSISI It all started when my wife noticed she had left her mobilephone in the public restroom near The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, in the bus which had run more than half hour after we left Assisi. Impossible to return. So, I called my wife's mobile phone from mine, and a man answered, but we could not communicate because he spoke Italian. When I asked our tour guide, Sabrina to replace me, she found the man was a friar, and the mobile phone was kept in the church office. OK, the mobile phone was safe, but how could we get it back? Then, Gigi, the driver of our bus, used the network of bus drivers, and wrote the scinario. Mr.A, the driver of the tour visiting Assisi the next day, would receive mobile phone from the church, and carry it to a sightseeing spot where he could meet Mr.B, the driver on the way back to Rome. Thus, the mobile phone was delivered to the hotel in Rome by Mr.B, before we returned to Rome. Thanks to Sabrina, Gigi and two other drivers - and also the anonymous woman who found the mobile phone in the restroom and brought it to the church -, the mobile phone was successfully relayed and we could fully enjoy the tour without sacrificing any of our itinerary. OTHER IMPRESSIONS •Hotels: Hotel St.Martin in Rome locates near the Termini station and was convenient. Hotels in Florence and Venice were far from the city center but not bad considering the price of this tour. •Meals: almost average. Lunch at Montepulciano was superb. •On the first day, "Rome at sunset tour" is offered. It is a night walking tour which visits several famous spot such as Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and so on. But I'd like to say, Visit Them In Daylight if you have time. Once again, Thanks to Sabrina and Gigi!

How to plan an Italy trip

Want to know how to plan an Italy trip? You’ve come to the right place. Italy trip planning is one of our favorite things to do. So much so that we set up this website.

We wrote this article to take you step by step through planning your trip. From deciding when to go and how much it will cost to what to take and how to use your mobile phone, it’s all here to remove the overwhelm and make your trip planning easier. Even if you choose to hire a travel agent to assist with your bookings, it is a good idea to walk through these steps as it will help the agent build the best trip for you.

Step 1 – Decide when you want to go and your budget

When to go to italy.

There is no bad time to visit Italy but there may be one that suits you better. Depending on your interests and the places you want to see you need to be aware of seasonal differences that you need to know about:

Summer – June to August: peak tourist season, weather is hot and prices higher. Many Italians are on vacation and the coastal areas are very busy especially in mid August
Fall / Autumn – September to November: September remains hot and busy in most of the major tourist centers. By October the weather is cooling and ferry services on the coast and lakes stop running. At this time grape harvest is in full swing. November is generally quite wet but there is lots of sunshine between the showers.
Winter – December to February: As the weather cools so do the crowds. Attractions are much less busy and the lead up to Christmas is magical with lights and decorations in shop windows. In January and February restaurants in many coastal areas are closed. February’s Carnevale in Venice is generally one of the most expensive times to visit the city
Spring – March to May: In March and April wildflowers bloom and the countryside is awash with color. Easter is a popular holiday for Europeans to visit Italian cities especially Rome, Florence and Venice.

NOTE: peak season in the most visited destinations is May – October.

Our favorite time to visit Italy in the shoulder months. In April and May and October and November the weather is generally sunny and mild, the crowds are manageable and you can find great value deals on your flight and accommodation.

How much will it cost?

This will depend on your expectations, interests and travel style. You can travel very cheaply in Italy if you visit lesser-known regional areas and avoid the big cities. Even in the big cities it is possible to find free attractions and budget accommodation if you know where to look.

If you want to see the main sights and enjoy experiences such as cooking classes, private boat cruises and wine tours then the sky is really the limit when it comes to cost.

Most travelers fall somewhere in the middle however and a reasonable daily budget per person for food, transport and activities is around €100 on top of flights and accommodation.

Step 2 – Do some preliminary research and preparation

Where to research your trip to italy.

From online news and magazines, blogs, Instagram, Facebook groups (check out Italy Travel Planning ) and even podcasts like ours – there are thousands of resources online. I am sure you’ve already seen quite a few of them already. Sometimes endless options can be overwhelming so we recommend collecting ideas in an online folder or scrapbook and organizing them into destinations that you really want to see.

You’ll probably want to “do it all” but really have a think about your interests and what will best suit you and your travel style. Once you have some ideas, it’s best to consult a structured resource to check your assumptions and thoughts.

Traditional guidebooks definitely have their place for planning a trip to Italy. Well researched and structured, they’ll give you in depth information on destinations and sights to see as well as practical tips to help you plan. Group tour itineraries

Tour companies – like ours ! – put a lot of effort into designing tours that cover the main sights and even lesser known regions. They know the times it takes to get around and how long you can stay in each place to get a taste or feel for the destination.

We often check itineraries of places we would like to visit as an input into our own planning. Here are some recommended tour companies and itineraries to investigate.

Private tours

If you want maximum flexibility and comfort, consider a private driving tour . From the moment you land, to when you depart, you’ll have a personal driver with local knowledge making sure your trip is exactly what you imagined.

Passports and visas

At this stage of your planning it is a good idea to check the validity of your passport and if you require a visa. Citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and New Zealand may enter Italy and stay up to 90 days without a visa within an 180 day period. You must have 6 months validity on your passport when you enter Italy. Go and check this now as it can take several months for new passports to be processed.

All other nationalities should check this Italian government site that will walk you through whether a visa is required for your visit.

Citizens of the European Union can travel with photo identification.

Step 3 – Confirm your itinerary

Itinerary planning is where many people get stuck. We understand. There are so many amazing places to see in Italy that deciding where to go and how much time to spend there can be hard. As a general rule, we like to spend a minimum of three nights in each place to minimize time spent traveling and also enjoy each place as much as possible. So if you have a 10 day trip then 3 main stops would be a good baseline to start with.

Where to go

From your research, you probably have an idea of where you want to go. You may want to visit the popular cities and regions on your first trip however each city and region in Italy offers something special.

Most popular cities

Itinerary suggestions

As a general rule, for a 3-5 day trip we suggest choosing one destination – a city or region. If you have a week to 10 days then you can plan 1-3 places in either the north OR south of Italy. In a two week trip you could cover 3-4 places and see both north and south.

Try not to squeeze too much in. It’s easy to underestimate transit times and getting in and out of airports and train stations. Plus you want to have plenty of time to enjoy yourself and soak up every last moment.

Most people travel to Italy for 10 to 14 days so we built some itinerary suggestions to cater for that time frame that cover both northern and southern Italy.

Group Tours

Packaged group tours of Italy are a popular way to travel and avoid the stress of planning your own trip. They are also a great option if you would like some company along the way. Here is a quick summary of popular tour companies:

When should you start booking your trip?

Italy is one of the most visited destinations in the world, so in our opinion, it is never too early to start the booking process. Book accommodation as soon as possible, and at least 6-12 months in advance especially for peak times in July and August. We prefer to pay the higher rate for flexible bookings on both Booking.com and Plum Guide .

Day tour and attractions also sell out months in advance at peak times. In 2020 our preferred booking site GetYourGuide refunded all tours canceled due to the pandemic and stand by their policy of allowing cancelations with a full refund up to 24 hours before your activity starts.

Flight bookings will depend on where you are flying from. For long haul flights the best deals are generally found 6-12 months in advance while deals pop up regularly for travel within Europe.

Rail bookings can be made up to 4 months in advance on high speed intercity and standard intercity trains.

Step 4 – Book your flights, inbound travel & insurance

Flights to italy.

It is easy to fly direct (or with a single stop) into Italy from most places in the world. Rome Fiumicino [Leonardo da Vinci](FCO) international airport is the main hub for air traffic but you can also easily fly into Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Venice Marco Polo (VCE) airports from major hubs around the world.

There are many other airports throughout the country that can be accessed within Italy and Europe. Pisa is useful for trips to Tuscany and the Cinque Terre and you will need to fly into both Sicily and Sardinia.

To source the best flight deals to Italy we use a combination of Skyscanner , CheapoAir and Google flights .

Skyscanner – portal where you can view cheapest days and routes to fly and set alerts for price drops
CheapoAir – uncovers the best deals on first and business class flights around the world
Google flights – great for checking schedules and airline routes

Secure the best deals by setting up alerts on Skyscanner for the month you wish to travel and wait for price drops. It’s good to have a price that you wish to pay in mind but be prepared to be flexible on dates and stopovers. It is often cheaper to fly into Milan rather than Rome and that city is a useful entry point for northern Italy itineraries.

TIP: always use an incognito browser window to search for flight deals. Prices are amended up for users known to be searching for specific dates and times.

Inbound rail from within Europe

Major Italian cities – Milan, Rome, Florence and Venice – have fantastic fast speed train links from other capitals and major cities in Europe. The website Seat 61 is a great resource for planning train travel within Europe.

Bus travel to Italy

If you’re on a tight budget and traveling within Europe, then you might want to consider coming to Italy by bus. Low cost operator Flixbus covers 3,000 destinations in 39 countries.

You can compare schedules and prices using Omio – a useful site for booking a combination of train, bus and air travel within Europe.

Organize travel insurance

Once you have booked your flights or tour, we recommend organizing travel insurance straight away. The main reason you should purchase insurance is to cover health costs and emergency repatriation to your home country should you fall ill. Since 2020 you need to check whether there is cover provided for issues relating to covid19 however general health cover is recommended regardless.

Cover for cancelation, delays and loss of belongings is a bonus and again they may not apply under pandemic conditions. You need to read all the terms and conditions of your cover including any exclusions before you commit to buy.

Policy costs vary by your country of residence, what is covered, age, existing conditions and the insurer. You can visit Worldnomads for a quick quote. We use this company for our family travels and find the cost, coverage and claims process to be good to excellent.

Another option if you are in the United States is Safety Wing’s Nomad Insurance . Unfortunately neither option provides policies for those aged over 69. In this case you can try Travel Insurance Master – a service that allows you to compare quotes and insurance policies.

Step 5 – Book accommodation and transport

Accommodation.

Choosing where to stay at each stop is an important part of itinerary planning. Italy has many different options for tourists and you can expect the usual range of hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation as well as apartments and villas.

If you plan to spend any time in the country, consider staying at an agriturismo or farm stay. This is accommodation offered by Italian farmers who earn additional income by providing rooms and meals. Very popular in Italy and Europe, prices ranges from budget to luxurious. You can find agriturismi (plural) with swimming pools, hammams, restaurants and wine cellars. We always try to build them into our itinerary.

How much will accommodation cost?

Here is a rough guide to average prices for a double room. This will vary with prices higher in popular areas at peak times

Upscale / Luxury – €210+ [USD $240+] per night Midrange / Boutique – €120-260 [USD $135-295] per night Budget / B&B – €70-130 [USD $80-150] per night Ultra budget / Hostel or shared room in AirBnB – €30-45 [USD $30-40] per night

Best accommodation sites

Our favorite sites for booking lodging are Booking.com and Plum Guide – between them, you’ll find a huge range of options from hotels and resorts to bed and breakfast, apartments and farm stay accommodation.

Transport while in Italy

As a general rule, if you are traveling between cities and major towns then the best way to travel around Italy is by train. If you want to explore the countryside and small villages you will need to rent a car.

When you are mapping out distances to travel between destinations use Google maps or Rome2Rio .

Train travel in Italy

Trains in Italy are modern and efficient. Fast speed services link the major cities and regional trains connect smaller towns and villages. Two major train networks operate throughout Italy – Italo and Trenitalia .

You should book in advance for high speed intercity services where seats are allocated. If you purchase non-flexible tickets you can make significant savings with advance bookings. They are not required on regional services.

Car rental in Italy

One of the best ways to see the smaller towns and countryside in Italy is to rent a car and take to the open road. Driving in Italy is quite straightforward. You just need to do some forward planning and use your common sense. Here are some tips to

You are required to carry an International Drivers Permit – these can be arranged in your home country at minimal cost
Standard transmission on cars is manual or stick shift. If you want to rent an automatic car expect to pay extra, if you can find one available
Rent the smallest car you can to fit you and your luggage – roads are often narrow and you don’t want to get stuck!
Heavy fines apply if you enter ZTL zones or historic districts where driving is not allowed

Internal flights

If you want to visit the islands of Sicily or Sardinia, or travel very long distances, flying makes the most sense.

Check on Skyscanner or Google flights for routes and prices. Remember to set alerts for those routes you want to fly and book early for flights in the summer months.

Step 6 – Book Attractions, tours and activities

Major attractions.

The major cities of Italy – Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan – are some of the busiest cities for tourists in the world. And most visitors want to spend time at their famous attractions

We strongly advise you to prebook advance skip-the-line tickets for the following attractions – the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Uffizi Gallery and Doge’s Palace. Otherwise, you could spend precious vacation hours standing in lines to enter these sites. Note – in winter months booking in advance is not as necessary.

We have given you the official booking sites and an alternative for approved ticket partners should you have trouble using the official site – unfortunately, that happens a lot! The direct sites are usually cheaper but the partner sites are generally more user friendly. Always check the terms and conditions of your purchase, particularly in relation to changes and refunds. GetYourGuide has a very easy cancelation policy which in many cases allows cancelation with refunds up to 24 hours prior to departure.

If you want to learn about the sites you are visiting then we recommend a group day tour. We prefer small group or private tours where you learn about the culture and history of the places you are visiting. It’s so much more fun than reading plaques and you are also able to ask questions.

So make sure to build in a couple of tours when you are planning a trip to Italy.

Our favorite small group tour companies are Take Walks (formerly Walks of Italy) and Liv Tours and we prefer With Locals for private tours. Both offer very well designed and engaging tours of the major sights in Italy as well as interesting food and cultural tours.

Step 7 – Get ready for departure

Organize your money and credit card.

The local currency in Italy is the € Euro.

You do not need to carry too much cash when you are there. Credit and debit cards VISA and Mastercard are widely accepted while American Express and Diners Club are not as popular. You may want to consider a foreign currency card like the Wise Mastercard where you can convert Euros easily and cheaply from your US dollar, Australian dollar or Canadian dollar accounts (plus many other currencies)

Be aware of foreign currency charges and ATM withdrawal fees applied to your account when you are abroad. You may want to review the cards you are taking with you prior to your trip. We recommend that you take two – one as a back up for emergencies. And inform your bank before you go. Sometimes they can be overzealous and place a block on your card if they see unusual activity.

Book airport transfers

Planning your arrival in Italy is recommended. Most of the airports are a fair way out from the city center – and in the case of Venice, in the middle of a lagoon!

Compare different transfer services on Suntransfers – a company that specializes in transfer options from major airports. They have options to suit all budgets and prices for coach, mini bus, private car and limo services.

Rome – transfers from Fiumicino airport

Taxis are fine to take in Rome. There is a set rate into the center of €48 and the ride takes around 45 minutes. Or, if you would prefer to be met at the airport you can pre-book a transfer. A transfer is the best option if you are traveling with more than 2 people and have several items of luggage. We recommend:

Welcome Pickups – available 24/7, a private car transfer means you are met at the arrivals hall and will take between 30 minutes and one hour door-to-door.
Suntransfers – offers a wide range of vehicles for groups of all sizes. Transfers can be canceled up to 48 hours in advance with no penalty.

Another popular way to transfer into Rome is to take the Leonardo Express train . This non-stop service between Fiumicino and Rome Termini (the main station) takes 32 minutes. Trains depart every half hour from 6:08 to 23:23, and the cost is €14. You can purchase tickets at the station on the day. Unless you are staying close to Termini you will then need to get a taxi to your accommodation.

The cheapest transfer option – this bus goes direct from the airport to Termini – €6-7 one way.

Venice transfers

The water bus company Alilaguna runs shuttles every 15 -30 minutes in peak season to and from the airport and the islands on the lagoon. This bus stops at San Marco and Rialto as well as some other secondary stops. The fare is €8 one way €15 return and the journey takes 1½ hours – you can book online here

A private boat transfer or shared transfer in a water taxi is the fastest (and most glamorous) way to transfer to your accommodation in Venice. Journey times and prices depend on the number of people in your party and exclusivity. A direct private transfer to the airport takes around 45 minutes.

You can also take a taxi (cost €25) or express airport bus to Piazzale Roma (cost €8) and then take a vaporetto (water bus) or walk your hotel/accommodation. A one way trip on the ferry costs €7 per person and is valid for 60 minutes.

Florence transfers from Florence airport

Florence airport is very close to the city center and a 15 minute taxi ride away. There is also an airport bus that takes around 20 minutes. A 20 minute tram ride takes you to the main Santa Maria Novella train station and costs €1.50.

Florence transfers from Pisa airport

Many people fly to Pisa to reach Florence as it is a larger airport. If you arrive during the day take the PisaMover train to Pisa Centrale train station – journey time 5 minutes. Then take a train to Florence. Starts at 6.00 am and the last train departs at midnight and it costs €5.00.

On our last visit we arranged a transfer with Suntransfers as we arrived too late for the last train. There is also a coach transfer option.

Amalfi Coast or Sorrento transfers from Naples airport or train station

We recommend organizing a private transfer for this journey. The train, ferry and bus via Sorrento can take 4 hours while a car service is around 1.5 hours. You can compare different services on Suntransfers – a site specializing in ground transportation.

You may find sites or groups where specific drivers are recommended. We do not recommend booking a driver this way for safety reasons – how do you know that the person recommending the driver is reputable, let alone the driver? And also for practical reasons – small operators may not have capacity or availability.

Plan how to access the internet

Consider how you will access the internet on your trip. You may be happy to disconnect and use paper or offline maps however many of us need internet access.

Italy has high speed internet and there are many options to stay connected depending on your needs. If you use minimal data and are happy to use offline maps and guides then you should be able to get by using wifi at your hotel or accommodation. Do not expect wifi to be available in restaurants and cafes because in Italy restaurants are for eating.

If you plan to use wifi make sure to turn off international data roaming before your trip to avoid unpleasant bill surprises.

Paid internet options

Use your provider’s roaming plan – usually very expensive and slow speeds if coming from outside Europe
Local SIM – purchase a tourist SIM before your depart or when you arrive that has enough data for map navigation and research. Italian provider TIM comes highly recommended and there are outlets at the airports and train stations
Portable wifi device – connect multiple devices to high speed internet for reasonable prices. We use and recommend Solis Wifi (Get 10% off with our code – UNTOLDM )

Packing for your Italy trip

The key to packing for Italy is to pack the minimum that you need. Many people like to take carry-on luggage only for their trips. This is a great way to travel as you will find it much easier managing trains, cobblestones and stairs that are a feature of travel in Italy.

But, most of us find that a challenge, so try to stick to a medium bag per person plus one carry on item. Large suitcases are not a good idea. You will also thank yourself if you consider your footwear carefully. Three comfortable pairs will see you through most trips.

June in Rome brings warm and pleasant weather , perfect for exploring the city’s numerous attractions. In the whole month, there are generally only 2 or 3 rainy days.

The average temperature in the first half of the month is around 24°C (75°F) , while in the second half, it rises to about 27°C (81°F) .

In June, the days are also getting longer (about 15 hours of daylight every day!), allowing you more time to visit and enjoy the city.

The best things to do in Rome in June 2024

You simply can’t got to Rome without visiting the Colosseum , the largest amphitheater in the ancient world.

This iconic symbol of ancient Rome was built in 70-80 AD to host gladiatorial combats, public spectacles, and dramas.

In June, the Colosseum has extended opening hours , allowing you to explore this magnificent monument a bit later than usual.

To visit the Colosseum, you need to buy your skip the line tickets in advance. Almost no tickets are sold at the ticket office, and there is often a 2-hour long or more waiting line!

All tickets and guided visits bought online have priority entrance (no need to go to the ticket office again).
Not all tickets are always available. For a given date, there is a limited number of tickets of each type available. During high season, many of them are sold out a month in advance!

The Roman Forum is another must-see attraction of the Italian capital, as it was the center of political, social, and economic life in ancient Rome.

Strolling through the Roman Forum, you’ll come across the ruins of ancient temples, basilicas, and government buildings . Among others, you shouldn’t miss the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Titus, and the Curia Julia.

In order to learn more about the history and get interesting facts about these impressive ruins , you should opt for a guided tour.

Located just above the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill is another essential stop on your Rome itinerary.

As one of the Seven Hills of Rome , it offers a breathtaking view of the city and is steeped in history and mythology. According to legend, this is where Romulus founded Rome in 753 BC!

To avoid long waiting lines (very often more than 2 hours!), you should book a guided tour that priority access to St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Vatican Museums house one of the world’s most extensive collections of art, with masterpieces spanning from ancient times to the Renaissance.

Some of the highlights include the Raphael Rooms , the Gallery of Maps , and the renowned Sistine Chapel , where you can admire Michelangelo’s breathtaking frescoes, including The Last Judgment and The Creation of Adam.

In June, the Vatican Museums offer extended opening hours on Friday evenings , allowing you to enjoy the collections in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Piazza Navona is one of Rome’s most famous and picturesque squares.

Built on the site of the ancient Stadium of Domitian, the square is now a vibrant and bustling area, filled with cafés, restaurants, and street artists .

The main attraction of Piazza Navona is the Fountain of the Four Rivers , designed by Bernini and featuring an Egyptian obelisk at its center.

While you’re there, you should visit the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone located on the square. You will also see the Pamphilj Palace , housing the embassy of Brazil.

When visiting Rome in June, you should definitely visit the Pantheon , one of the city’s most iconic and well-preserved ancient buildings.

Originally built as a temple dedicated to the Roman gods, the Pantheon was later converted into a Christian church and now serves as a mausoleum for notable Italian figures, including the famous painter Raphael.

Once inside, you can marvel at the remarkable dome , which remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome even after nearly 2,000 years!

The central oculus , an open hole at the dome’s apex, allows natural light to stream into the interior, creating a mesmerizing effect on the floor and walls.

During your visit, take the time to appreciate the intricate details of the Pantheon’s architecture and the rich history it represents.

As the Pantheon is a popular attraction, you should ideally visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the largest crowds.

Fortunately, in June, the longer daylight hours give you plenty of time to explore this architectural masterpiece.

Since July 2023, access to the Pantheon has been subject to a charge and requires an admission ticket (cost: €5) . To visit, you should book your ticket on the official website .

8. Trevi Fountain

As you admire its intricate sculptures, don’t forget to throw a coin into the fountain , which, according to tradition, ensures your return to the Eternal City.

9. Spanish Steps

After visiting the Trevi Fountain, you should take the famous Via del Corso , followed by Via dei Condotti , the 2 main shopping streets of Rome, to reach the Spanish Steps.

This grand staircase connects Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Trinità dei Monti.

In June, the 135 steps are adorned with azalea flowers , making the site even more beautiful!

You can climb the steps to enjoy a stunning view of the city or simply relax, get a gelato (Italian ice cream) or watch the street performers at the base of the stairs.

10. Castel Sant’Angelo

Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, Castel Sant’Angelo has served several functions over the centuries.

It was a fortress, a prison , and even a papal residence!

Today, it houses a museum where you can discover its history and admire its impressive collection of art and artifacts.

11. Villa Borghese

Located on top of Capitoline Hill, the Capitoline Museums are considered to be the world’s first public museums.

They boast an extensive collection of ancient Roman sculptures, inscriptions, and artifacts . Some of the must-see items include the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the Capitoline She-Wolf , and the Dying Gaul .

During your visit, you should also take the time to enjoy the beautiful view over the Roman Forum from the museum’s terrace.

16. National Roman Museum

If you’re interested in ancient Roman art and history, make sure to visit the National Roman Museum during your trip to Rome.

The Roman National Museum isn’t just a regular museum: It’s in fact 4 different sites spread across the city!

1. Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius (or Amalfi Coast)

For a truly unique experience, consider a day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius or to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

In Pompeii, you can explore the well-preserved ruins of the ancient city that was buried under volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius.

If you’re looking for a day trip from Rome, the stunning Amalfi Coast is also a great option!

The picturesque coastal towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello offer breathtaking views, delicious cuisine, and a relaxed atmosphere.

While it’s a bit of a journey from Rome, the stunning scenery and charming atmosphere make it well worth the effort.

In addition to the day trip combining Pompeii with the Amalfi coast I mentioned above, you can choose to focus only on the Amalfi coast and book that day trip, which also includes a boat trip:

4. Civita di Bagnoregio

Another fantastic day trip option is the hilltop town of Civita di Bagnoregio .

Often referred to as the “dying city” due to its slowly eroding cliffs, this authentic village is considered as one of the most beautiful in Italy .

5. Tarquinia and the Etruscan Tombs

For a glimpse into ancient history, you should go on a day trip to Tarquinia and explore the Etruscan tombs .

This UNESCO World Heritage Site features hundreds of tombs adorned with intricate frescoes, offering a unique insight into the lives and beliefs of the ancient Etruscans.

You can also visit the National Etruscan Museum to learn more about this fascinating civilization.

6. Sperlonga

If you’re craving some beach time during your visit to Rome in June, consider a day trip to Sperlonga .

7. Anzio and the Beaches

Another great option for a beach day is Anzio , a coastal town just south of Rome.

In addition to its beautiful beaches , Anzio is also rich in history, with several sites related to World War II and ancient Roman ruins . You can visit the Beachhead Museum and the Imperial Villa of Nero before enjoying a relaxing day by the sea.

8. Frascati and the Wine Region

For wine lovers, a day trip to Frascati and the surrounding wine region is a must.

You can visit local vineyards , learn about the wine-making process, and, of course, sample some of the delicious local wines. Frascati is also home to several beautiful villas , such as Villa Aldobrandini, which you can explore during your visit.

For a truly memorable day trip, you should book a wine tasting tour to Frascati.

You’ll have the chance to taste some of the area’s finest wines while enjoying the stunning countryside.

Although further away from Rome, a visit to Venice can be an unforgettable experience during your trip to Italy.

You can explore the famous canals , admire the stunning architecture of St. Mark’s Square , and even t ake a gondola ride . Keep in mind that this day trip requires a longer travel time, so you’ll want to plan accordingly (or visit over several days!).

If you don’t have a lot of time in Italy and still want to discover the best of Venice during a day , you should book the following day trip:

From Rome, you can also visit the countryside of Tuscany with an organized day trip.

June is a lively month in Rome , with several events and festivals taking place.

Here are the main ones:

On June 2nd, Rome celebrates the Festa della Repubblica , a national holiday commemorating the founding of the Italian Republic.

You can witness a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali , as well as concerts , flag-raising ceremonies, and other festivities throughout the city.

2. San Giovanni Festival

San Giovanni Festival takes place on the 24th June, celebrating the feast day of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of Rome.

You can enjoy numerous events, including outdoor concerts, food stalls , and fireworks at Piazza San Giovanni.

Now that you know how to plan your trip to Rome in June, let’s talk about another important point: where to stay in Rome ?

In Rome, finding accommodation at a good price isn’t that easy. In order to help you out, I have selected for you the best hotels depending on your budget.

One last advice: Book now if you can , there is a lot of demand in Rome, so the best hotels rooms are sold out very quickly!

Biancaluna: B&B located near Termini Station, 1.5 km from the Colosseum. Modern, comfortable and very clean room from 70€. Strong points: the warm welcome and the advice to visit Rome, the location. An excellent choice for a cheap stay in Rome!
Hotel Balilla: Located 1.6 km from the Colosseum and close to a metro station. Well-equipped and quiet double room, impeccably clean, from 99€, breakfast at 5€. Strong points: the friendly staff, the comfort of the beds, the location at 10 min walk from the Colosseum. This is our favorite for its excellent value for money!
Alice Vatican House : Located 450 meters from St. Peter’s Square. Contemporary room with neat decoration from 95 € per night, breakfast included. Strong points: ideal location, terrace overlooking the Vatican, warm welcome. This is the best choice for your stay in Rome under 120 euros!
MZ Hotel: Located near the Campo di Fiori and not far from the Pantheon. Modern double room from 150€, breakfast at 12€. Strong points: the location near the historical center, the warm welcome, good bedding, new hotel.
Roma Luxus Hôtel : High end hotel located at only 400 meters from Piazza Venezia. Beautiful double room starting at 200€ per night, breakfast at 20€. Strong points: The room design, the 5 stars service, the superb breakfast, the spa, the amazing staff. It’s the best hotel for a high end stay in Rome!
NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali: This 5* hotel located right next to the Roman Forum offers sublime rooms from 580€, breakfast included. Strong points: the exceptional location, the attentive staff, the view, the comfort. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Rome!

If you want to save a bit of money, you can find an accommodation around Rome. I recommend you the bungalows of Camping Village Rome , located at only 15 minutes by car from the Vatican city.

The price starts at only 30€ per night! It’s the best “budget” solution if you don’t mind not being in the city center. It’s also a great choice for families, with the swimming pool!

Although June is generally a sunny month in Rome , it’s always good to have a backup plan in case of rain.

If the weather turns wet, you can visit some of Rome’s best indoor attractions, such as the Vatican Museums , Capitoline Museums , National Roman Museum or the Galleria Borghese .

You can also take the opportunity to explore Rome’s many churches, such as St. Peter’s Basilica and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore , which offer shelter from the rain while showcasing breathtaking art and architecture.

Last but not least, a visit to the Capuchin Crypt and Rome Catacombs can also be a great option!

Visiting Rome in June is a great choice for families , as the city offers many activities and attractions that will keep children entertained and engaged.

You can visit kid-friendly attractions like the Explora Children’s Museum , or the Bioparco di Roma zoo.

Additionally, you can take advantage of Rome’s many parks and green spaces, such as Villa Borghese and Villa Ada , where kids can play and and have fun.

But what kids especially enjoy in Rome is to spend a few hours at the Gladiator School!

Dressed with a traditional gladiator tunic , they will learn the basics of swordplay with their combat instructor. It’s a lot of fun!

When packing for your trip to Rome in June , it’s essential to consider the warm weather and the activities you plan to do during your stay.

With average daytime temperatures above 25 degrees , you should bring lightweight clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, skirts and summer dresses.

Don’t forget a comfortable pair of walking shoes , as you’ll likely be exploring the city on foot.

Additionally, you may want to bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings or air-conditioned indoor spaces.

You should also bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during the warm days.

A compact umbrella or lightweight rain jacke t can come in handy in case of unexpected rain showers, but you can also choose to buy one in Rome if it starts raining.

When choosing what to wear in Rome in June, as I mentioned above, opt for comfortable, lightweight clothing that suits the warm weather.

When visiting religious sites like churches and the Vatican, make sure to dress modestly – covering your shoulders and knees is generally required.

Of course, comfortable walking shoes are a must , as you’ll be spending a lot of time exploring the city on foot.

Sneakers are in my opinion the best choice, and you should probably avoid high heels during the day , as they can be uncomfortable on Rome’s cobblestone streets .

Finally, don’t forget a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun during your outdoor adventures.

Rome is famous for its delicious cuisine , you will thus have the opportunity to taste some local specialties during your visit in June!

Here are a few recommendations:

1. Seasonal Roman Cuisine

Try classic Roman dishes like cacio e pepe (pasta with cheese and pepper), carciofi alla romana (Roman-style artichokes), and supplì (fried rice balls stuffed with mozzarella).

Look for restaurants that use fresh, seasonal ingredients for the best flavors and avoid eating in too touristy areas. It will only be more expensive and most likely also less tasty!

2. Best Pizzerias in Rome

You can’t leave Rome without trying some authentic Italian pizza .

Whether you prefer thin-crust Roman-style pizza or the thicker Neapolitan Pizza , there are countless pizzerias throughout the city where you can indulge in a delicious slice.

Here are my 3 favourites:

Savor a glass of Italian wine at one of Rome’s many enotecas (wine bars).

These bars offer an interesting selection of local and regional wines , along with small plates and appetizers that pair perfectly with your chosen beverage.

You should try L’Angolo Divino Enoteca Vineria. It’s located in the old Rome, close to Campo de’ Fiori.

4. Rome Cooking Classes

If you want to learn the secrets of Italian cooking , consider signing up for a cooking class during your visit.

You can learn to make traditional Roman dishes or master the art of pizza and pasta making from local chefs.

5. Best Gelato in Rome

No trip to Rome would be complete without trying some of the city’s famous gelato .

As an ice cream lover, here are some of my favourites ice cream shops: Giolitti , Gelateria Valentino (near the Trevi Fountain) Fata Morgana , and Frigo .

To make the most of your trip to Rome in June, keep the following tips in mind:

1. Choosing the right accommodation and get a good deal

You should book your accommodation as early as possible , as June is a popular month for tourism in Rome. Consider staying in centrally located neighborhoods , like Trastevere or Monti, to be within walking distance of many top attractions.

If you already know your travel dates, I strongly recommend you to check the hotels prices now and book your stay!

2. Save time by booking tickets

To save time and avoid long queues at popular attractions, you really need to purchase tickets in advance or, even better, you can buy a Rome Tourist Card or an Omnia Card .

No matter which solution you choose, you will get priority entrance at the must-see attractions!

3. Rome’s Public Transportation

While Rome can easily be visited on foot , you may not want (or not be able to) walk all day long.

In that case, you can use Rome’s public transportation system , including buses, trams, and the metro, to get around the city efficiently.

To do so, you need to purchase a City Pass like the Roma Pass or individual tickets at metro stations, newsstands, or tobacco shops.

4. Staying Safe While Exploring Rome

Rome is generally a safe city , but you should be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to protect your belongings.

Keep your personal items secure , especially in crowded areas or on public transportation, and be cautious of pickpockets.

5. Planning Your Rome Vacation Budget

Plan your budget while taking into account the cost of accommodations, transportation, dining, and attractions.

Once again, booking your accommodation, entrance tickets and activities in advance is the perfect way to avoid any surprise in terms of holiday budget.

While Rome can be expensive, you can also find affordable options and free activities to enjoy during your stay.

June is a great time to visit Rome , offering warm weather and a lively atmosphere.

However, even if it’s way less crowded than July and August , it’s still a popular month for tourism , so you can expect crowds at popular attractions and higher accommodation prices compared to low season.

If you prefer to avoid the peak tourist season (even if June is still way less touristy than August for example!), you might consider visiting Rome in the shoulder months of April, May, September, or October.

These months typically offer pleasant weather, but with smaller crowds than the busy summer months.

As Rome is an all year round destination , you can also visit during the low season from November to February, although you will encounter cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours.

However in that case, outdoor visits will for sure be less pleasant that in June!

June is my favorite month to travel around Italy, my favorite of all for exploring my beautiful country!

June in Italy is a time of sunny days, blue sky, flowers, and dinner out, yet it is not usually as hot as July or August.

You can think of June in Italy as a spring and summer month all rolled into one.

Depending on the day, you can get nice and mild temperatures or hot days, depending on the exact time of the month, where you are in Italy and a bit of luck!

I take time in June to travel the length of Italy every year and this, plus the fact that I am from Rome, means I have a lot of experience about the weather in Italy in June and what is best to pack.

Today, I share this experience and my June packing list for Italy.

The Weather in Italy in June: overview

June in Italy is a transition month between spring and summer.

The start of the month tends to have mild temperatures that may still require a light cardigan at night, while the later part of the month tends to have full-on summer weather and potentially very hot temperatures.

In general, June in Italy sees average temperatures between 20C/68F and 30C/86F, with significant differences between locations.

The hottest parts of Italy in June are the cities and the South (Sicily especially). The coldest part of Italy in June is the mountains.

The differences between North and South are not always the most significant, while the geography of where you are can make all the difference.

Hilltops and the Mediterranean coast are milder than cities and plaines; high mountains like the Dolomites get a completely different climate again thanks to the presence of high peaks.

Because of these several microclimates, if packing for a trip to Italy in June to more than one location, it is worth being prepared for different places.

Skirts: I like to have a mix of short and below-the-knee skirts to cover all situations, including church visits
Shorts: there is a common item of clothing for kids and very young visitors, but less common in women over 30 or so, especially in cities. This is not an absolute rule and you can wear shorts no problem if this is your style.
Shorts from men are very common, especially chinos or those with pockets.
Summer dress
T-shirts and tops. Make sure you have at least one top that covers your shoulders for church visits.
Cardigan / light sweater: handy for the evening, hilltops and ventilated coastal areas at night, especially
Linen/cotton trousers/pants: very handy for when you need more formal attire: think gentlemen in higher-end restaurants etc.

What to pack for Italy in June: shoes

In Italy, you are guaranteed to walk a lot; therefore, getting shoes right is essential!

In a nutshell, I recommend you bring:

Good walking sandals. I am fond of my Teva, perfect for all situations, even water. I love these for all of us, including the kids!
Flip Flops for the Beach.
Sneakers – they may or may not be necessary, depending on the sandals you have. however, I do find it handy to have them, especially in early June when the weather still allows for closed shoes.

Good to know : I recommend you don’t use your flip-flops as your daily shoewear outside of seaside destinations. This is because flip-flops do not offer enough arch support (you definitely want it, with all the walking you’ll do!) and style. Flip-flops are considered beachwear in Italy and while you can wear them if you want, they are not a universal type of shoes and you may feel out of place in some establishments, a little as if you were wearing slippers rather than shoes!

Water shoes for the kids: many Italian beaches have pebbles and rocks, so kids tend to do much better with watersheds protecting their feet.

Sunhat – I know you may feel this is a tourist item but please: do not underestimate the sun in Italy in late June – it can get very intense, especially in archeological sites such as the Roman Forum or Pompeii or if out on long boat trips

In Italy, you can buy medications in pharmacies .

However, it is a good idea to pack some essentials. We usually always pack:

Paracetamol or equivalent
Basic first aid kit (plasters etc)
Any medication you may be using at home regularly. If prescription, make sure you carry them in their original packaging and take note of the active agent should you need to source it in Italy
Motion sickness remedy if using

Packing for Italy in June: tech and electronics

Charger cables
Power adaptor and converter – this is essential if you travel from the US, for instance, and want to use items such as a curling iron or a hairdryer (most places provide hair dryers but not all or they may not be very powerful. If you are used to doing your hair a certain way, it can be handy to bring your own)
Extra battery pack
Tablets/kids entertainment if using
Ereader if using

I love crossbody bags for travel.

They are easy to carry, safe against pickpockets (not a huge concern in Italy but better safe than sorry) and there are so many options to choose from you are sure to find one to suit your taste and style.

I do not believe you need to invest in an anti-theft one; however, many people feel safer that way and swear by the Travelon brand.

My husband and kids normally carry small backpacks with daily essentials. We find camelback backpacks to be ideal: they are small enough not to be bulky yet good for essentials and perfect to collect the delicious water of Italy’s water fountains.

I started packing wet bags like these when my kids arrived, and now I am hooked!

I love them, and they are a lifesaver if you find yourself stuck with a wet swimsuit just at the time when you need to pack, a real possibility in June!

What to wear in June in Italy to visit churches

A big worry when packing for June in Italy is to have items that can be cool enough to withstand the hot weather yet modest enough to allow visiting churches.

Some good ways to strike a balance between respect and dealing with the heat are:

Opt for t-shirts. Big churches require to cover shoulders but have no problem with arm showing. Early June especially is still mild enough for t-shirts to be ok
Bring a shawl with you, so you can easily cover your shoulders when entering a church if wearing a spaghetti strap top
Wear flowy, breathable maxi dresses and skirts (they also protect your legs from the sun, they can be great!)
Opt for light linen pants as a comfortable, lightweight and stylish alternative to shorts for the day
Carry a maxi skirt with an elastic band at the waist. Then, you / your daughter can quickly slip on your shorts for church visits.
Get boys to wear pants with zip-off legs that convert easily from long to short and back.

Good to know! The dress code for small kids in churches is not as strict, so you do not need special clothing for them to visit churches. If you have older kids, below-the-knee shorts, skirts or pants with zips that convert from long to short are a great option. There is no exact cut-off date for kids wearing shorts in churches, so the best way is to go with the spirit of the rule. If your child is old enough that short shorts may be considered ‘immodest’ by a strict interpretation of the word, it is best to get them more covered up to avoid being turned away.

Of course, you don’t want to forget your document, including:

Visa if needed
Travel Insurance
International driven permit if needed
Kids’ birth certificate if needed (for instance, if traveling along with a minor with a different surname than you)
Prescriptions

How to pack for Italy June style tips

In Italy, you can wear pretty much whatever you want!

I always hear people worrying about ‘looking like a tourist’ and I can understand the concern. However, please don’t worry too much!

In terms of safety, there are so many tourists, you will not stand out almost anywhere.

You’ll have more visitors in popular locations than locals (think Florence Duomo area, Cinque Terre, Amalfi coast) so your tourist gear will perfectly blend in with the people around.

For style, there is a huge variety nowadays even among locals, so there is no right or wrong or at least, no more than back home!

You may need to dress up for a fancy restaurant or special events but for standard sightseeing, the only important thing when picking for Italy in June is to be comfortable and weather appropriate – the rest is details!

That said, there are some style tips that I believe can help.

Dresses, maxi skirts, harem pants and jumpsuits are very popular and great for Italy in June.

As well as fashionable, they are safe to wear in churches and can work well for both day and evening occasions.

Lately, harem pants are trendy in Italy and a great alternative to skirts if you prefer additional coverage.

Shorts are very common for kids, men and young women, a little less for middle age women and up.

This is not an absolute rule, but it may be handy to know if you wonder why locals seem to embrace them!

For men, athletic wear is considered sports gear and would not be local everyday attire.

On the other hand, chinos are very common for men and acceptable in all situations except the most high-end restaurants, where long pants are required.

Colorful necklaces

The fastest way to feel like an Italian is to embellish your look with colorful necklaces. Italian women are fond of them, and I am partial to the too!

They dress up even a simple outfit adding color and texture. Moreover, they are cheap and pack light, basically the best friend of the stylish traveler!

Visiting Rome in June – All You Need to Know (2023 Edition)

Are you planning your trip to Rome in June and are unsure where to start? We got you covered!

June is the last month of spring and marks the beginning of summer, making it one of the busiest months. Being a transition month, June offers moments typical of spring in Rome as well as the aspects that introduce you to the summer.

While you will still enjoy the bright colors of the blossoming flowers, the heat starts to become more summer-like, and sunscreen and hats might be more necessary than in the previous months. June is still one of my favorite months in Rome, and just like April and May , many travelers know that so you will be in very good company.

In this guide to visiting Rome in June, I am going to provide you with all the information and tips you need to plan a perfect trip and enjoy Rome’s monuments as crowd-free as possible, or at least without having to queue for too long.

Popular draws like Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi, and the Spanish Steps, for as immortal as they are, won’t make it to my Rome to-do list for June because I simply don’t think you will enjoy them the way they deserve. I, myself, avoid these areas this time of the year because I can’t find the peace I want. However, I live in Rome, so if you argue that I can visit them whenever I want, you will be right.

These are my suggestions but if you are brave enough and feel like you can take it, go for it and enjoy also the most famous spots. Instead, I would be recommending more offbeat landmarks and lesser-visited churches that you can certainly enjoy more in the busiest season.

Weather in Rome in June

Is Rome very hot in June? Is Rome rainy in June? Probably because it’s a transition month, there are many questions I’m often asked about June’s weather in Rome.

The temperatures in Rome in June can even reach 28°C/83°F at the highest and 17°C/63°F the lowest. Since the beginning of June is still spring, expect some showers here and there from time to time.

The days are usually warm and sunny, and some breeze will mainly be in the evening especially in the first weeks, while towards the end of the month, it will be more summer-like weather. In fact, the main clothes you should be wearing will be light summer clothes.

Is June a good time to go to Rome?

Along with April and May, June is one of the best months to visit Rome. Even though the weather can reach quite high temperatures and walking long hours in the streets of Rome will be harder than in March or April, June is still pleasant, especially in the morning.

Reasons to visit Rome in June

One of the best June holiday destinations in Europe , there are plenty of reasons to visit Rome at the end of spring.

The weather. Warm enough but still pleasant before the summer heat, June has perfect weather to hang around in Rome.
The parks. This is the time for a stroll in the park in Rome, and since you are there, how about enjoying a picnic?
The light. Whether you are into photography or you simply want to take in the gorgeous city views, June in Rome
The views . The weather makes it a perfect month to enjoy a drink or a meal from one of the many terraces in Rome, be it a restaurant or a rooftop bar.
The music. June kicks off the concert season in Rome. Whether you like rock, pop, or opera, summer in Rome is packed with live music.

Is Rome crowded in June?

Being one of the best months to visit the city, you are likely to find Rome in June pretty crowded. Some of the places where you will find the biggest crowds include the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter’s Basilica , the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps , and the Trevi Fountain .

There will be many people also in and around Piazza Navona but being so big, you will probably feel less overwhelmed. Here, you will likely find the majority of tourists concentrated around Bernini’s masterpiece of the Four Rivers Fountain in the center of the square.

Important dates and events in Rome in June 2023

June 2nd – Republic Day. This is a holiday across Italy as we celebrate the Day of the Republic. Schools, banks, and offices are closed but museums, shops, and restaurants in the city center are usually open and follow festive schedules.
June 11th – Corpus Domini. This is a religious occurrence and it’s usually when children receive the Holy Communion Catholic sacrament. It’s always on a Sunday.
June 21st – The summer solstice. This is when summer officially kicks off. From now on, rain is rare and temperatures start soaring. It’s not a holiday.

What to do in June in Rome

Visit the archaeological park of the colosseum.

This includes also the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Even though it will be very busy, if it’s your first time in Rome and you’ve never been, you can hardly skip it. I suggest visiting the Colosseum early morning to avoid the hottest hours. If you are planning to buy the ticket at the entrance, try to get there even before the opening time, while if you are buying your fast-track entrance online , pick an early morning time slot.

Once you are done with the Colosseum, head over to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. It’s the same entrance and your Colosseum ticket is valid. These two next sights will be less crowded but I also suggest visiting them in the first part of the morning because they are all open-air and when it’s hot it becomes hard to walk around.

Take a stroll in the park

With the nice weather, Rome’s parks get even more populated than usual. Founded and notable villas, all of the urban gardens in Rome are packed with history and places to visit. From the beautiful Borghese Gallery of Villa Borghese to the lake and fountains of Villa Pamphilj to the wonderful alleys of the Botanical Garden, there are plenty of reasons to stay in the green.

If relaxing is what you want to do, pack up your picnic basket and spend a day out in nature in the heart of the city or in one of the parks just outside Rome such as Parco di Veio or the park of Lake Bracciano.

Walk around the historic center

As the nice season starts, walking around the historical alleys of Rome’s Centro Storico , spotting notable palaces and ancient buildings, being amazed at the art of the Baroque and Renaissance churches, chasing fountains, and finding the hidden gems around every corner will feel like visiting a huge open-air museum.

Visit the Baths of Caracalla

The Baths of Caracalla is one of the most important and well-preserved ancient ruins in Rome , and even so, the line at the entrance is nowhere near what you will find at the Colosseum.

Take this as a great opportunity to visit an ancient site, to see how Roman baths were organized, and also to visit the largest Mithra temples discovered so far in Rome.

Go to a museum

Just like when you try to escape the rain, you are going to want to escape the heat. Especially in the second half of June, around midday and early afternoon, the temperatures will start soaring. What’s better to do than enjoy artistic masterpieces and historical objects in one of the many museums in Rome ?

From the large Capitoline Museums and Museo Nazionale Romano to Palazzo Barberini noble palace, you will be spoiled for choice.

Given the heat of June and the fantastic offer of artisan gelato in Rome , this will definitely be one of your favorite activities. Between the fruits, the different chocolate options, nuts, and all types of original combinations, you will have enough gelato flavors to go on for the whole stay.

You can opt for a cone or a cup, for small, medium, or large size. Often, a large gelato makes for my lunch on a hot summer day!

Visit Villa Torlonia

Villa Torlonia is a relatively small park, especially if you compare it to Villa Ada and Villa Borghese. It’s a lovely garden with many places to visit, such as Casino Nobile, the Roman home of Mussolini , the Moorish-style greenhouse known as Serra Moresca , and the quirky residence of the Torlonia prince called Casina delle Civette , the Owls’ Cottage, because of its beautiful Liberty-style décor.

On weekends, this park gets quite crowded with locals who go there for a picnic, for lunch at the local Limonaia bistro, to walk, run, do yoga, sightseeing, or visit the notable palaces that apart from their permanent collection always host temporary exhibitions.

Go to a concert

Summer in Rome is all about outdoor events and concerts, and this year is no exception. June music events in Rome will include concerts by famous Italian singers and also international artists.

The Baths of Caracalla have already lined some pretty big Italian names such as Zucchero, one of my very favorites, on June 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and the duet Antonello Venditti with Francesco De Gregori on June 5th, 7th, 8th, and 15th, and Andrea Bocelli on June 21st.

At the Auditorium Parco della Musica they are organizing the music events for the whole summer. The opening of Rome June concerts will take place with the exceptional Italian songwriter, singer, and musician Paolo Conte on the 6th. Other June concerts in this great Rome venue will see performers like Carmen Consoli and Mariza on the 7th, Samuele Bersani on the 11th, Pet Shop Boys on the 13th, and Beth Hart on the 30th.

Go to the beach

That’s right, there are many beaches near Rome and June is a great month to enjoy the local coast. Beaches like Ostia Lido, Santa Severa, and Torvaianica are very popular in summer, but in June you are likely to find them still accessible and not too crowded, especially if you go during the week.

What to eat in Rome in June

Zucchini/courgette. Whether you are ordering pizza by the slice, soup, or a side dish, remember that zucchini are in season in summer and you can find them in plenty of recipes.
Eggplants. Same with eggplants, just like zucchini, they are in season and make for perfect pizza toppings, grilled side dishes, or mains such as “ melanzane alla parmigiana “.
Summer fruits. Whether you are choosing gelato flavors or want to order a smoothie, in June in Rome you can opt for juicy fruits like peach, apricot, melon, and watermelon.
Fish and seafood. If you want to order some protein, fish and seafood will probably be easier than the typical meaty Roman dishes on the stomach. Always opt for fresh food and if possible the catch of the day that often good restaurants offer.

What to pack for Rome in June

As a seasoned travel writer, trust me, I understand the importance of packing lightly and smartly for a trip to Rome in June. To ensure a seamless and comfortable experience, here’s my carefully curated list of essential items to include in your suitcase.

Sun protection essentials. Shield yourself from the scorching sun with a wide-brimmed hat, fashionable sunglasses (you can buy them in Italy if you want to pamper yourself!), and sunscreen. Rome’s June weather can be sunny and pretty hot, so it’s crucial to protect your skin.
Summer jacket or cardigan. Although June in Rome tends to be warm, evenings can bring a pleasant yet cooler breeze. Carry a lightweight jacket or cardigan to be prepared for impromptu alk-fresco dining, evening strolls, or in the case of restaurants with strong A/C.
Swimwear. If you are lucky enough to book a Rome hotel with a pool or if you plan to visit nearby beaches like Ostia or Fregene, don’t forget to pack your favorite swimsuit.
Reusable water bottle. This is something I always suggest carrying, but it’s especially important if you are packing for Rome in June or summer in general. Staying hydrated is crucial while exploring the city and include in your luggage a handy collapsible water bottle that you can refill any time and for free.
Camera. Capture your memories of Rome by packing a camera, whether you are more comfortable with a DSLR or your smartphone’s camera.
Phrasebook or dictionary. Brush up on some basic Italian phrases or download a language app to assist with communication during your stay. If you are more old-fashion like me, you can pack a pocket-sized phrasebook to facilitate communication during your stay.
Sling bag or small backpack. Carry a sling bag or small backpack to hold your essentials while exploring Rome. It should be lightweight to be easy to carry around all day and small enough to be accepted inside landmarks such as the Colosseum.
Snacks. Italy is not so big on travel-friendly snacks yet, so if you are used to it and find it handy, pack some snacks like energy bars or trail mix for moments when you need a quick bite on the go and don’t find anything quick around. Don’t pack too many though because in Rome there are plenty of street food places and coffee shops for quick snacks and you can find energy bars in all food stores like Conad, Carrefour, and NaturaSì.

What to wear in June in Rome

Light and breathable fabrics. Opt for clothes made with lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. These materials help keep you cooler and more comfortable as you explore the city.
Dresses and skirts for women. Embrace the summery vibes of Rome in June by packing flowy dresses and skirts. They not only offer a chic and feminine look but also allow for easy movement and comfort. This year I’m liking midi skirts or dresses better if cotton frill, so nice and loose.
Shorts and capris. These are also good, fashionable options if you want to stay cool and comfortable. Better if from the same breathable and natural materials and in neutral pastel colors so that you can easily mix and match with the tops and shirts that you have, without the need to pack too much stuff. Just make sure that you don’t wear them when you are planning to visit the Vatican or any church.
Rompers and jumpsuits. Make a fashion statement with trendy rompers and jumpsuits. These one-piece ensembles are not only effortlessly stylish but also practical for navigating the city’s cobblestone streets with ease. Jumpsuits have been the trend for a couple of years in Rome but I admit I was never attracted. This drastically changed this year as I bought my first jumpsuit and I love it!
Comfortable footwear. Rome is a city best explored on foot , so make sure you pack comfortable walking shoes or sandals to navigate the typical “sanpietrini” cobblestone streets and visit landmarks like the Roman Forum and Trastevere neighborhood.
Tops and shirts: Opt for lightweight tops and shirts in breathable fabrics. Loose-fitting blouses, tank tops, and classic tees in cotton or linen will help you stay comfortable throughout the day and better face the Roman heat.

You can expect gorgeous summer weather in Italy during the month of June. Although the early mornings and late evenings in northern Italy will be a little chilly, it will be warm and sunny in most parts of the country throughout the day. The few scattered June showers around the Peninsula will largely be ineffective in shooing the sun away from showing you a good time.

The incredible summer weather in Italy during June does bring with it huge hordes of tourists to the popular summer destination and it will be crowded in most parts of the country. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about this. This is especially true of most museums in most major cities. Prices will rise as this is the peak travel season in Italy.

Except for a few lightweight scarves and sweaters for the early hours of the mornings and late hours of the evenings in northern Italy, most of your packing for June in Italy should be centered around including light summer clothing like dresses, linen or cotton shirts and shorts, sandals, a pair of comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, a sunhat, and if you plan on spending extensive hours at the beach down south, your bathing suits and some trusted sunscreen.

Weather conditions in Italy during June can range from warm and slightly rainy to hot and dry depending on which part of the country you're in. By studying the country's three separate climate regions described in detail below, you'll have a much better idea of what to expect as far as expected precipitation and average temperatures are concerned.

Northern Italy: 13°C-27°C (55°F-81°F)

If you plan on visiting northern Italy during June, remember that while the afternoons are nice and warm, the evenings can get a tad chilly. The average maximum temperature in the region hovers closer to the 27°C (81°F) mark while the average minimum temperature hovers closer to the 15°C (59°F) mark.

You can expect it to be hot and humid in northern cities like Milan and Venice as a monthly total of about 80 mm (3.1 inches) of rainfall is expected in the region for about a third of the month.

Central Italy: 16°C-27°C (61°F-81°F)

Central Italy experiences near perfect weather conditions over the course of June. The average temperature high in the region during the month is 25°C (77°F) whereas the average temperature low is 16°C (61°F).

Not much rainfall is expected in central Italy during June. The area generally receives about 35 mm (1.4 inches) of rainfall for about 5 days during the month, so you can expect it to be very sunny and enjoyable.

Southern Italy: 21°C-30°C (70°F-86°F)

June is a warm month in southern Italy. The average maximum daytime temperature in the region during June is around 27°C (81°F) and the average minimum nighttime temperature is around 21°C (70°F).

Moderate rainfall in the form of 40 mm (1.6 inches) over 7 days during the month of June is expected in southern Italy, but the rest of the month should see plenty of clear blue skies and sunshine.

Best Places to See in Italy in June

Avoid the big crowds of Florence and head on down to the beautiful Tuscan countryside if you want a truly authentic Italian experience. You'll develop a profound appreciation for nature as you sit and sip on some of the best wine the world has to offer with stunning views of colorful wildflowers sitting atop lush green hills for as far as the eye can see!

Not quite as popular as her older sister, Tuscany, Umbria – or the Green Heart of Italy, as it's popularly known – is absolutely incredible in June. The weather is perfect and the province is home to some of the most romantic and quaint villages in Italy like Spoleto and Spello. The flower festivals here are not to be missed!

3. Sardinia

Sardinia in June is, surprisingly, not quite as busy as most other parts of the country. The really big groups of tourists usually arrive here in the months that follow, so if you're looking for some relaxing quiet time on the beach to take in breathtaking views and crystal clear blue waters, the island of Sardinia is where you should be headed!

June, being one of the peak summer months, is also one of the busiest times in the year insofar as travel season in Italy is concerned. The good weather brings with it huge crowds of tourists from all over the country, the continent, and the world. As a result, prices surge and it's almost impossible to carve out a good deal anywhere you go.

Do yourself a favor and plan far ahead if you want to not pay over the odds for anything and book tickets in advance if you want to be able to visit your favorite museums and do so without standing in lengthy lines.

While you can expect crowds almost anywhere you go in Italy during June, you can expect it to be especially busy during the day of, and during the days leading up to, Republic Day. It also gets very crowded in Rome during the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, and in Florence during the Summer Solstice.

What to Wear in Italy in June

Most of Italy will remain warm during the month of June. A few lightweight scarves, your favorite dresses, linen or cotton shorts and shirts, comfortable walking shoes, sandals, sunglasses, and a sunhat should all make their way to your June-in-Italy packing list.

While northern Italy will remain hot during the afternoons, it can be quite chilly there during the early hours of the mornings and evenings post sunset. As such, it wouldn't hurt to bring along a few extra lightweight sweaters or jackets with you.

If you plan to spend some time soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches of Sardinia or Sicily, do remember to bring your bathing suits, good sunscreen, and towels with you.

Republic Day: La Festa della Repubblica, or Italy's Republic Day, falls on June 2 and it is a national holiday meaning all schools, businesses, and government offices remain closed on this day. Nationwide celebrations in the form of parades and firework displays can be observed, but the grandest of these celebrations takes place in the capital city of Rome.

When to visit Siena

Visitors should plan a trip from May to June. Crowds are more manageable, the Tuscan landscape is at its most vibrant and weather conditions reach highs of around 25C. However, for cheaper flights and quieter piazzas, visit off-peak in autumn to watch the leaves change colour.

Awash with beaches, chapels and authentic street food markets, a week in Sicily would not be complete without days in Palermo’s ancient world.

When to visit Palermo

The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring are the best time to visit Sicily, as the sweltering temperatures of summer begin to rise and fall to 20C but balmy evenings can still be spent tasting wine with only a light jacket required. Money-saving travellers should visit in winter – between December and Feburary – for the best deals and fewer crowds.
