Cats - US Tour Tickets, News, Info & More

Produced by CATS-Eye, LLC, the national tour of CATS is the only production in North America sanctioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber. With original direction by Trevor Nunn and choreography by Gillian Lynne, this is the CATS credited with the British invasion of Broadway. CATS celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 11, 2011, holding its place as the longest continuously touring Broadway musical in history. New for the 2011-2012 season will be the reintroduction of “psychic twins” Coricopat and Tantomile. These mystical cats, who are always in sync, were last seen in the Broadway production. Where one goes, the other follows...! On May 11, 1981, CATS opened at the New London Theatre in the West End. Eight years later, it celebrated its first important milestone: after 3,358 performances CATS became the longest running musical in the history of British theatre. CATS played its final performance on its 21st birthday, May 11, 2002. CATS opened on Broadway on October 7, 1982 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and continued to live up to its motto "Now and Forever." On June 19, 1997, it became the longest running musical on Broadway. CATS ended its 18 year run on September 10, 2000 with 7,485 performances.

Cats: "The Jellicle Ball"

Choreographed by Arturo Lyons and Omari Wiles Directed by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch

Inspired by the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot

“I have rarely seen an audience respond with as much joy and love as I saw recently at Cats: ‘The Jellicle Ball’ . The atmosphere was, quite simply, electric. Cats and Ballroom culture both emerged in the same era and I am delighted that, all these years later, they are intersecting once again. I want to congratulate the entire team behind this special show!” – Andrew Lloyd Webber

Cats: “The Jellicle Ball” is a radical reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats , inspired by the Ballroom culture that roared out of New York City over 50 years ago and still rages around the world. Staged as a spectacularly immersive competition by Zhailon Levingston ( Tina: The Tina Turner Musical , Chicken & Biscuits ) and PAC NYC Artistic Director Bill Rauch ( All the Way ).

By arrangement with The Really Useful Group.

Oregon cats and their plush pads star in this catio tour

M icha and Grace Sinclair welcomed two rescue cats into their Portland home and their life expanded. Grace trained cats Xalia and Mot to wear a harness as they wander through the couple’s attractive triangular yard, and Micha built a large screened cat patio, or catio , that allows the felines to exit one of the kitchen windows and safely nap or play in the outdoor air. The cats can see birds, but they can’t catch them.

Xalia and Mot are two of the stars of the Portland area’s 12th Annual Catio Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. Admission is $15 ( CatsSafeAtHome.org ) to join the self-paced, self-guided tour and see a variety of catios, from fenced spaces to portable options . Tour goers can talk with the homeowners and renters who built the clever enclosures, and meet the cats that enjoy them, “feline attitude permitting,” say organizers.

The popular Catio Tour is produced by the nonprofit Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon , Bird Conservation Oregon and Bird Alliance of Oregon (formerly Portland Audubon). The tour stops, from Southeast Portland to Vancouver, were selected to showcase ideas that fit any budget and space.

Funds raised through the event support the Cats Safe at Home campaign , which aims to reduce free-roaming cats with solutions that are good for cats and wildlife. The program’s CatsSafeAtHome.org site offers ideas for cat owners to install a screened enclosure for cats to exercise without facing outdoor hazards, like dogs and cars, while also protecting birds and other wildlife from cats.

At the Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Wildlife Care Center, nearly 40% of the birds brought in for treatment have been battered by a cat.

“Cats are both predator and prey,” said Micha. “Catios allow cats outside stimulus while keeping other wildlife safe that has a right to be there too.”

The Sinclairs and their cats benefit from a garden landscape that is a wildlife habitat certified by the National Wildlife Federation . The couple, who own Rejuvenation Artisans Landscapes , designed and sustainably maintained their garden to provide healthy soil, clean water and native plants for butterflies, birds, bats and other creatures.

Grace, a licensed landscape contractor, horticulturist and designer, has been creating organic landscapes since the 1990s. Both Grace and Micha, who is the chair of the Oregon Landscape Contractor’s Board , promote the use of thick mulches, organic compost and fertilizers, early disease and pest control, and proper and timely pruning to eliminate dependence on chemical fertilizers and sprays.

With their approach, fruits, herbs, edible flowers and foliage can be consumed, and people and animals can thrive.

Grace , who grew up in Arizona and is an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community , said she was taught that “all lives are vital.” She started rescuing cats, reptiles and other animals as a child with her grandmother.

“An important piece of being in the world is understanding that human perspective is not the only perspective and that animals can be loving and amazing companions,” said Grace, who once managed container gardening for exotic animal enclosures. She also maintained the award-winning Entry Garden at the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park before moving to Oregon in 2004.

The name Xalia was inspired by the Maricopa word for “moon” and Mot means “earth” in the Native American language, Grace said.

“So we live with the moon and the earth,” said Micha. “Mot is in and out of the catio 100 times a day, using it as a 12-foot-tall jungle gym, while Salya goes there for long stretches of time, to nap or watch birds” through the mesh siding.

Micha used salvaged wood, including manzanita, to build the 7-foot-long structure surrounded by rhododendron shrubs on the side of their Craftsman-style house. He added elevated platforms for the cats to jump onto.

Grace said the catio tour can help people see construction examples and ask questions. “Every house is different and cats’ needs are different,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see what’s possible and it’s always fun to look at kitties.”

Construction tips

A catio can be any size, from a simple window box, screened-in balcony or detached metal-and-wooden structure. Existing patios can be transformed into catios simply by enclosing them with screen or wire.

If you don’t want to construct a cat condo using plans , you can buy a kit or hire a pro (see CatsSafeAtHome.org/catio-resources ).

Just like you, cats like ventilation and their Cat TV (aka a view of the outdoors). Here are tips catio makers offered the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon:

  • Decide if the catio is just for cats or if it needs to be large enough for people to wander around. Placement of doors and ramps differ depending on the usage. After the entrance location is selected and a solid base has been made, changes can happen along the way if needed.
  • If the catio is visible, create a finished look by putting mesh fencing inside the framing. If you aren’t concerned about the look, it’s faster to put fencing on the outside of the structure.
  • Consider year-round comfort. Create shady places for cats to be when it’s hot or they want to hide, and warm the space on cold days with inexpensive throw carpets, a low-voltage heat lamp or removable plexiglass window panels fitted around the framing.
  • Make sure all seams are sealed above, below and on every side of the catio so cats cannot get out and predators cannot get in. Add a cat flap to the home’s exterior door, window, wall cut out or build a screened walkway.
  • Add toys, a litter box and slowly acclimate cats to the catio.

Things To Do

Restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | tour 3 boulder county farms leading the farm-to-table movement, when was the last time you visited the farm that supplies food to your favorite table.

Farmer Eric Skokan, in hat, addresses ...

With over 1,000 farms and sweeping views of the Front Range, Boulder County is an idyllic place to experience agritourism. Our suggestion? Tour a farm, then head downtown to taste their harvest at a local restaurant.

Explore the farms:

Black Cat Organic Farm 9889 N. 51st St., Longmont

A bucolic cruise through Boulder County’s northernmost farmland lands you at Black Cat, and the setting gets even prettier once you’ve wandered onto chef-farmer Erik Skokan’s 500-acre certified organic farm.

Skokan started as a backyard gardener in 2006, the year he opened his first restaurant.

Since then, he and his wife, Jill Skokan, have grown their operation to include 250 varieties of vegetables, grains, legumes, herbs, and flowers, as well as heritage sheep and pigs — not to mention a patch of mouthwatering strawberries dripping down a hillside between private cabanas that will reopen for farm dinners sometime this summer (most likely July).

If you’re serious about learning the ins and outs of farming, Black Cat’s custom, hands-on, chef-led tours are definitely the way to go. Call 303-444-9110 to book a morning or afternoon outing; $250 for groups of all sizes.

The Skokans gear tours toward the interests of their guests, so you could find yourself walking — and sampling — the fields while learning about food production, actively working with animals and discussing husbandry practices, or even seeing firsthand the integration between farm and table during a harvest.

Three Leaf Farm 445 S. 112th St., Lafayette

Three Leaf Farm owners Lenny and Sara Martinelli specialize in organic heirloom vegetables and herbs, and the first thing you’ll notice when you turn off South Public Road is a sprawling vegetable patch teeming with juicy heritage tomatoes, colorful peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, squashes, plenty of salad greens, and rows of fragrant herbs.

The only soil amendment the Martinellis use is the compost they make, so you might also catch a whiff of something earthy as you explore this 100 percent organic farmstead.

The vegetable field precedes a cut flower garden built into a hill, and beyond that there’s plenty more to see while touring the 17-acre space — including horses and goats, the latter of which come out of their pens for goat yoga in the summer.

Plant lovers will enjoy strolling along winding paths, meandering past medicinal herb gardens, aromatic culinary gardens, and tranquil meditation spaces.

But this isn’t a place where you just drop in. You can arrange tours in advance by emailing the owners at [email protected] .

Education is a big part of Three Leaf’s mission; there are lots of other opportunities for guests, including creative workshops, seminars, hands-on demonstrations, and classes on herbalism and food production.

Six outdoor farm dinners are offered from June through October.

Check the organization’s website for up-to-date details.

Shoppers at the Cure Organic Farm ...

7416 Valmont Rd., Boulder

Anne Cure opened her farm in 2005 and has been selling food directly to Boulder County restaurants ever since.

The highlight of any farm visit is Cure’s magical farm stand, complete with twinkling lights, plants, and plenty of fresh produce.

The seasonal stand is open daily, from 12 to 5 p.m. In addition to produce, Cure sells specialty cut flowers and eggs on site, and she works with other local producers to bring in canned and dried goods along with dairy and grass-finished beef and pork.

There isn’t a formalized farm tour, per se, but for those who enjoy a laid-back experience, self-guided exploration is encouraged.

“Folks are always welcome to walk through our fields during operating hours,” says Cure.

If you do it, don’t miss the small herd of Nigerian dwarf goats. Penny, a teacup pig, is a big hit with kids.

Ask nicely, and one of the farm staff will probably let you have a taste of their harvests right from the ground — Cure Farm is that kind of a place.

Foodies can’t go wrong with a 3-course farm dinner at Bramble & Hare, 1970 13th St., Boulder, an award-winning restaurant that was recently awarded a rare Michelin Green Star for its sustainability practices.

Most of the food on your plate comes straight from Black Cat Farm. The rotating, seasonal menu includes an appetizer, entrée, and desert, and vegetarian options are available, along with craft cocktails and a satisfying wine list.

Three Leaf Farm sends 100 percent of its produce to five well-known restaurants, three of which are located in downtown Boulder.

Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant, 1710 Pearl St., Boulder, is a must for any vegetarians with a hankering for inspired plant-based cuisine — but even the most devout carnivores will appreciate the restaurant’s delightful brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour menus, featuring a mix of health food and comfort fare.

There’s no better place to end a hike than the Chautauqua Dining Hall, 900 Baseline Road, a Victorian-style eatery at the base of Chautauqua, serving fresh, Colorado-bistro cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The views are free to those who nab an outside table.

The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, 1770 13th Street, a personal favorite, is a Michelin Guide Recommended restaurant with a diverse international menu featuring dishes from Asia and Europe. Tea enthusiasts can drop in for afternoon tea and sample one or more brews off the thick tea menu while immersed in a beautifully designed teahouse reflecting the 2,000-year-old traditions of Southeast Asia.

Satiate your sweet tooth at Shamane’s Bakery, 2825 Wilderness Place. The bakery offers desserts, pastries, and made-to-order cakes and cupcakes. Scratch-made savory items are available, too. Owner Shamane Simons prides herself on using the highest-quality ingredients, some of which come from Cure Farm.

You’ll also find Cure Farm ingredients at Moxie Bread Co., 4593 Broadway, with additional locations in Louisville and Lyons. Located in the NoBo Arts District, Moxie carries unbelievable bread and pastries, drinks, a few grab-and-go snacks, and freshly milled flour and heritage grains.

Straight to the source

It’d be hard to tell a story about Boulder’s farms and food without mentioning the Boulder Farmers Market, a nationally recognized producer-only market held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays through November 23. (There’s also a Wednesday market, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., through October 2.)

Given high sourcing standards and selectivity, the market has become an essential stop for local restauranteurs and chefs, as well as the community at large.

“Our most regular customers are the chefs from Potager in Denver,” says spokesperson Frankie Ryder. “Daniel Asher and chefs from Gemini also shop the market.”

Get a literal taste of Boulder at the market’s food court — set up in the parking lot of the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse — offering farm fresh dishes from local vendors.

Arts | one dead, another seriously injured after van strikes bridge off i-395, catches fire, subscriber only, arts | stray cats reunion tour ends in ct. bassist rocker says rockabilly legends still full of surprises..

Legendary rockabilly band Stray Cats ends its current tour at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport on Aug. 17. (Suzie Kaplan)

“Rockabilly is such an American form of music from its outset,” said the band’s energetic stand-up bassist Lee Rocker, explaining his undying love for the form. When he and his bandmates, guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer and drummer Slim Jim Phantom, began devoting themselves to the lively rock sounds first popularized by Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran and Jerry Lee Lewis in the 1950s and ‘60s, rockabilly hadn’t been on the pop charts for years but “it was alive and well and living in the underground,” Rocker said. “We managed to take it out of that scene.”

That was 45 years ago. The Stray Cats began by playing “corner bars around New York” and on Long Island.

“I was super young. We were all young, 16 or 17 years old,” Rocker said. “We were kids. It was amazing. The first time we played, it was to 15 people. The next time in the same place, it was 75. That kept happening wherever we played.”

The trio edged into New York City’s thriving CBGB/Max’s Kansas City scene, “along with the punk bands,” Rocker recalled. “Rockabilly was kind of the original punk rock.” The band took a risk and flew to London, having heard of a burgeoning neo-rockabilly scene in a country that had always had a deep respect for the genre. “We read in the New Musical Express that this was happening and said ‘Let’s go to England,’” Rocker said. “We bought four airline tickets: three for the band and one for my bass.”

The same thing that happened in New York happened in London, and the Stray Cats rockers were on their way to global success with such hits as “Stray Cat Strut,” “Rock This Town” and “Sexy + 17.” Their classic rockabilly look suited MTV, and their sound attracted multiple generations of rock ‘n’ roll fans.

The band dissolved in the mid-’80s, but the three all pursued new projects that kept them close to their Stray Cats roots. Rocker and Phantom joined with guitarist Earl Slick in the trio Rocker, Phantom and Slick. Phantom’s other bands have included Swing Cats, The Head Cat, 13 Cats and Kat Men. Rocker had over a dozen of his own albums, including one from 1998 called “No Cats.”

Lee Rocker, a Stray Cat for 45 years. (Russ Harrington)

Connecticut has seen Setzer the most often, mainly at Foxwoods Resort Casino numerous times between 2007 and 2018 with his big band jazz/rock hybrid The Brian Setzer Orchestra, but also just last year with his “Rockabilly Riot!” tour. Setzer even played West Hartford’s Agora Ballroom in 1986, a couple of years after the Stray Cats broke up and the same year that the band first reunited.

Now Stray Cats regularly regroups. “We’re like locusts,” Rocker said. “Every five years we put the band back together and have a tour. We do this, and when it’s not the Stray Cats, we’re all busy.”

Rocker loves how rockabilly has continued to survive in small clubs in cities around the country. In Connecticut, rockabilly — or punkabilly, psychobilly or zombie-billy — bands have found a home at Cafe Nine in New Haven, which has hosted not just the younger acts but legends such as Robert Gordon and Wanda Jackson.

Rockabilly never died but got a huge boost about 15 years ago with the success of the jukebox musical “Million Dollar Quartet.”

The show dramatizes an actual jam session that happened in the Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee featuring Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. The show ran for years in New York, both on and off Broadway. Not only were there numerous national tours and a touring sequel, “Million Dollar Quartet Christmas,” but small theaters created productions, new rockabilly revival acts started doing concerts playing the same classic songs without the show’s scripted dialogue and some of the best “Million Dollar Quartet” impersonators did solo tours.

Rocker embraced the “Million Dollar Quartet” phenomenon.

“I saw it on Broadway,” he said. “I was very good friends with Carl Perkins. We even did a song for the soundtrack of ‘Porky’s Revenge’ together.”

Rocker ended up in the show’s powerful backing band for a dozen performances in 2011 while the usual bassist was on vacation.

From left: Stray Cats guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer, drummer Slim Jim Phantom and bassist Lee Rocker. (Russ Harrington)

Rockabilly is still a huge part of Rocker’s life. “The look and the clothes and the music,” he specified. He still collects vinyl records but adds that he “listens to all kinds of things” and always has.

“My parents were classical musicians,” he said. “The rule in our household was that you had to play music. We had to take lessons. Since my parents were doing it, I knew when I was very young that music was something you could do for a living.”

Rocker’s mother,  Naomi Drucker, was the American Chamber Ensemble, which supported work by New York composers. His father, Stanley Drucker, was the principal clarinetist in the New York Philharmonic when its main conductor was the legendary Leonard Bernstein.

Rocker, who played cello as a child before switching to double bass, had a few brushes with Bernstein in his youth. “I’ll never forget when I was around 20, the Stray Cats were at our pinnacle. I went to one of my dad’s concerts and saw Lenny. The only advice he had for me was ‘You shouldn’t have changed your name.'”

Rocker doesn’t regret the name change, as he is still rocking.

“There’s the roots of it all, the thread,” he said. “That’s the upright bass. That’s the engine. I don’t think of this being a museum piece you have to dust off.”

The bassist said Stray Cats has seldom settled down, even when the band is reuniting to play its hits from decades ago.

“We thought we had the setlist set months ago,” Rocker laughed. “We still change it, and there are a few surprises as well. There may be a couple of non-Stray Cats songs. That’s the nature of the three of us — we’ve spent so much time together, and even in the old days, we never played a song the same way twice.

“We are so thrilled to be doing the last show of the tour in Connecticut.”

Stray Cats play Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Hartford HealthCare Amphitheatre, 500 Broad St., Bridgeport. $60.20-$327.60. hartfordhealthcareamp.com .

By RYAN DOAN-NGUYEN NEW YORK (AP) — In 1974, Harlem’s deserted streets and tumbledown tenements told the story of a neighborhood left behind. WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento River Cats faced an early 2-0 hold after the first inning in game four of their series against the Salt Lake Bees, but despite scoring once in the fifth, Sacramento could not overcome Salt Lake’s 5-1 victory on Friday night.

Before the River Cats (18-25/62-56) could take their first turns at the dish, they found themselves trailing by a pair of runs thanks to a Eric Wagaman two-run blast in the top of the first. For Wagaman, it was his first Triple-A home run, crushing a 0-1 pitch out to left field.

Two innings later and the Bees (24-19/56-61) continued to add on with a tally in the away half of the third, as Jake Marisnick doubled to open the inning and later scored with one out courtesy of a Charles Leblanc single into left. Insurance tallies continued to come through in the fourth, as Salt Lake once more pushed across a pair of runs when Elliot Soto singled and Zach Humphreys doubled, both with two outs in the frame.

Sacramento finally struck back in the fifth, as Blake Sabol drew a walk and later scored from first when Christian Koss laced his first double of the evening into left-center field. However, despite another two-bagger from Koss in the eighth and a pair of runners aboard in the ninth, that was close as the River Cats could come.

Taking the loss for Sacramento was starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-5), who surrendered five runs for a second straight start, this time on seven hits over 5.0 innings. Despite the five runs, it was the first time that Teng had pitched 5.0 innings he also did so on June 5 against Albuquerque.

Pitching buckled down following Teng’s exit, as four River Cats relievers combined to not allow a hit while striking out four over the final four frames. Included in that was a scoreless inning from left-hander Tyler Matzek on his rehab assignment, while Camilo Doval followed suit in the seventh, each striking out a batter while facing the minimum.

At the dish, Koss recorded half of Sacramento’s four hits, both of which were doubles for his first two-double game of the season with the River Cats. Earning the other two hits were David Villar, who singled in the ninth, and Will Wilson, who had the first Sacramento hit in the bottom of the third.

This series is now locked at two games apiece, and both teams will look to take an advantage in the set when they line up for game five of this series at 6:37 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.

Cat Video Fest

I don’t even really like cats, and yet here I am, slightly hungover on a Saturday morning, shoving popcorn in my face at one of New York’s finest cinemas watching hundreds of kitty videos back to back to back on the big screen.

2024 live music business is driving record revenues, but some data points raise concerns, 'fallout' artisans on adapting the video game for tv and collaborating with executive producer jonathan nolan, popular on variety.

“It’s my full-time job. My business cards say I watch cat videos,” Braden tells Variety . “Though I will say my wife is a first-grade public school teacher, and she makes a little bit more than me per year.”

Braden graduated from the Seattle Film Institute in 2006, and an installment of his own short film series “Henri,” about a “depressed French existential cat,” appears in this year’s reel. “I didn’t have this plan when I was in film school, but I definitely wasn’t thinking I was going to be the next Martin Scorsese,” he laughs. “As long as people laugh, and as long as we raise money for cats in need, then I’ll have the greatest job ever for as long as I want it.”

There are grumpy cats, feisty cats, helpful cats, cuddly cats. Cats playing piano. Cats pissing off dogs. Cats jumping off rocks set to audio from the parkour cold open of “The Office.” Cats breastfeeding set to Stewie from “Family Guy” saying , “Mom, mommy, mama,” etc. Cats scaling the walls of a kitchen set to a dubstep remix of “Spider Pig,” from 2007’s “The Simpsons Movie.”

The videos are painstakingly sourced and curated by Braden, who says he watches 15,000 cat videos per year and selects about 200 for the reel. “You’re going to see stuff from other countries, things that aren’t even online yet, things from student films,” Braden promises. He knows the experience has to be enticing enough to claw people out of bed and into the cinemas. “Plus, when you watch cat videos at home, you’re probably not raising any money for shelters,” he adds.

But the best part of Cat Video Fest is the children’s laughter, which echoed throughout the IFC Center and warmed even my cat-neutral heart. And as vice presidential candidate JD Vance decries that “childless cat ladies” are ruining America, it was refreshing to be surrounded by so many feline lovers having a good time at the movies.

When I ask him about Vance, Braden sighs. “His comments are pretty indicative of an outdated way of thinking about not just cat ladies but anybody who enjoys anything — that it must immediately be an object of derision,” he says. “The great thing about Cat Video Fest is that it’s very hard to sit amongst hundreds of other people in a theater laughing and enjoying and feel ashamed. It’s next to impossible.”
