A cruise to the Bahamas delivers fun in the sun and beautiful scenery. Of course, there’s great shopping, dining and watersports on the islands, too. With a cruise, the journey is just as much fun as the destination. But how much is a cruise to the Bahamas? The answer depends on how long your cruise is, the time of year, the cruise line and what promotions are going on when you book.

There are incredible deals for shorter three-night cruises that can appear online for less than $100, but a longer cruise in the most luxe cabin can reach into five digits during certain times of year. The average cost of a cruise to the Bahamas can be less than $1,000 for a short cruise. It is even more enticing if you live close to a cruise port and can drive instead of fly to the port to save on costs. With cruises to the Bahamas taking place all year long, consider avoiding holiday periods if you want to save more. 

Here are some important considerations to keep in mind when determining the cost of a cruise to the Bahamas. It may be cheaper than you think if you can use miles and points on a trip or are willing to forgo some frills on board.

How much is a Bahamas cruise?

Cruises advertise the base price of a sailing, which often doesn’t include taxes and port fees. The super-low numbers you see at first may not be entirely transparent . You’ll want to consider the taxes and fees as well as the type of cabin you book on board.

The base fare for a cruise can be around $169 for an entry-level room on a shorter cruise, but some promotions can drop the price down to $98. These prices are typically for two or three-night cruises before taxes and fees. These prices are per person and based on at least two people being in the cabin (double occupancy). 

We looked at a sample of shorter-term cruises to the Bahamas across multiple cruise lines in October 2023. Based on our findings, we’ve determined an average base price for a Bahamas cruise for less than a week to be $186.50. 

Note that this doesn’t account for myriad expenses, such as travel getting to/from the port of departure, as well as other typical expenses that we outline below.

How much is a week cruise to the Bahamas?

Obviously, the longer the cruise, the more expensive it can become. This is especially important to consider if flying to a cruise port rather than driving since your expenses would be potentially higher . If you’re paying for a flight, you might as well enjoy a longer sailing.

You’ll also have shore excursions and onboard activities that you’ll want to consider as part of the overall cost. Here are some important factors that can affect a cruise to the Bahamas cost.

We looked at a sample of weeklong cruises to the Bahamas across multiple cruise lines in fall 2023. Based on our findings, we’ve determined an average base price for roughly weeklong cruises to be $570. 

Again, these base prices are semi-misleading as you will still need to cover costs related to taxes and port fees, gratuities and more.

Additional expenses of longer cruises to plan for

Longer cruises often call for more opportunities to try land-based adventures and other special activities. Here’s what else you might want to account for as you plan for your Bahamas cruise budget.

Shore excursions

Many people prefer to explore on their own in the islands rather than book an expensive shore excursion. This can save substantially on the overall cost, but you would be responsible for any additional expenses if you do not return in time to the ship on time before it leaves.

Review the ports of call and decide what you want to do before you board. You may be able to organize a cheaper excursion with a local vendor or just take a taxi to get out and explore on your own schedule.

Specialty dining

Cruise ships have plenty of free food. You’ll find buffets, poolside snacks, late-night dining and everything in between to keep you satiated. But if you’re looking for a more upscale experience, some cruise lines have added specialty restaurants that carry an additional charge.

This can include Japanese sushi or teppanyaki venues, gourmet steakhouses and celebrity chef-inspired restaurants. If you visit these restaurants, there is an added, per-person cost. The quality of food and the experience will certainly be notably higher though.

The fee will depend on the restaurant. For example, a burger joint may cost around $7, but a super-fancy venue can be more than $100. The average price of a specialty restaurant, per person (before gratuity or alcoholic drinks), is $30-50.

Cruise lines may include tap water, juices, coffee, and hot or iced tea, but on mainstream cruise lines, most drinks (including soft drinks) have a surcharge. This can include specialty coffee drinks like a cappuccino or espresso. If you get thirsty for something even heavier, like wine, beer or a cocktail, these have a cost, too.

You can choose to pay as you go or opt for one of many different beverage packages — ranging from bottled water all the way up to the most premium liquors — which may make sense if you consume a lot. Do the math in your head before committing to this package as you may end up spending more that way.

Think twice about bringing your own alcohol or bottled water aboard. While cruise lines do have a certain limit you can bring with you, going over that amount will mean leaving it at the cruise port or picking it up at the end of the cruise. Plus, if you bring your own wine to a dining room, there may be a corkage fee, too.

Onboard recreation

Whether you indulge in the spa or partake in activities like the casino, organized games or amusement rides (some ships have things like race tracks and thrill rides), these carry extra expenses.

It’s important to budget these into your overall spending plan so you don’t walk off the ship with a bigger bill than expected.

Additional cruise expenses to plan for, beyond the base price

Taxes and port fees.

Sometimes, the taxes and port fees can be almost as much as the cost of a cruise, if you find a really cheap fare. For example, the $149 cruise fare with Carnival above has taxes and fees of $129.20 per person. All of a sudden, the starting price for that cruise is $278 per person. But that’s not all.

All of the people that take care of you on board rely on tips as part of their salary. While some cruise lines may package gratuities into the rates, many do not. There are standard flat rates that are used as a suggestion for how much to tip.

For example, Carnival’s gratuity suggestion is $14.50 per person, per day for a standard cabin and $16.50 per person, per day for a suite. If you book the lowest category room, a three-day cruise for two people would cost $87 for gratuities. This is just for the stateroom attendant. If you order drinks in the bar or dine in the restaurant, you’d want to tip there, too. 

For the purposes of the rate, let’s add the gratuity to the base cost and taxes. That comes to $321.50 per person for a three day cruise for two people (or $643 total for the couple).

Cabin upgrades

Cruise lines, like any other business, advertise their lowest fares, but there are opportunities to upgrade to a higher cabin. Perhaps, you prefer a cabin with a large window or one with a balcony. If you want a suite, it will cost even more. Keep this in mind when considering how much a Bahamas cruise is because it is easy to see the costs spiral out of control if you’re not careful.

Loyalty programs

One helpful tip is to join a cruise line’s loyalty program. If you travel with one cruise line often enough, you can earn elite status, which comes with different benefits. These can include cabin upgrades, discounts for onboard services like laundry or the gift shop, welcome drinks and other perks that can slash the cost of a cruise.

Cruise credit cards

Other perks are reserved for cardholders of a co-branded credit card with the cruise line . Savvy sailors know that this can be another great way to save money on a Bahamas cruise cost. The Carnival World Mastercard has no annual fee and the ability to earn 20,000 FunPoints, enough to redeem a $200 statement credit toward your next cruise. The card also offers a 10% discount for onboard shore excursions.

If you apply that $200 credit toward the earlier example of the starting cabin price without any shore excursions, the price suddenly drops. It may make sense to look into a no-free credit card for the cruise line you are using before setting sail.

What does the cruise fare cover?

Lines like Virgin Voyages and Disney Cruise Line are at the pricier end of the spectrum with sailings that usually start at over $100 per night and go up to several hundred dollars. After the cruise line itself, the single largest factor that will determine the cost of your cruise is which cabin category you choose. Interior staterooms with no windows or a balcony (occasionally tiny porthole cabins are classified as interior, though) are the most affordable, followed by oceanview cabins (with a large window) and balcony staterooms .

Comparing Bahamas Cruise Costs by Time of Year

As the air starts to cool and kids go back to school , that’s when you’ll find the most affordable cruise fares to the Bahamas. Not only is it cheaper, but these sailings are also less crowded due to two main factors: the risks that come with booking a cruise during the most active part of hurricane season, and the fact that grade-school and college students are back in class and families have likely wrapped up their major vacations for the year.

Even the tail end of fall — early December — can be well-priced and quieter. Voyages over Christmas and New Year’s command a premium, and then sailings are back to lower prices in the mid-winter months of January and February.

Spring and summer are the most expensive times to sail to the Bahamas. Though, you’ll still be able to find deals if you’re open about the cruise line and ship you sail.

How Much are Shore Excursions on a Bahamas Cruise?

As opposed to a wildlife and nature-focused region like Alaska or a history-filled destination like the Mediterranean , excursions aren’t as necessary or popular in most Bahamian ports. This means that you’ll likely spend less average per-port on a cruise to the Bahamas than in other regions.

For example, lots of cruises to the Bahamas include a stop at the cruise line’s private island/destination in the Bahamas. While these ports do have excursions and activities you can do such as snorkeling, horseback riding, jet-skiing, or parasailing, many passengers are just as happy to have a beach day complete with the free lunch that’s included on the island.

In Nassau — the most popular port stop in the Bahamas — you can spend your day walking around town, walking to the Queen’s Staircase, or doing an activity on your own like parasailing (around $100 per person), heading to an all-inclusive beach resort for the day ($100 to $170 per person), or going to Atlantis’ Aquaventure Park ($100 to $130 per person, varies based on the season).

However, shore excursions like swimming with pigs and visiting a beach club (around $150 per person), a catamaran ride with snorkeling (around $85 per person), and a guided walking tour of Nassau (around $40 per person) are also available.

In Freeport , another common Bahamas stop, excursions include things like a bicycle ride with a beach stop and lunch (around $100 per person), a glass-bottom boat tour with shark experience (around $80 per person), and a sightseeing bus tour with shopping and a visit to a brewery with a tasting experience (around $70 per person).

Depending on the type of activity, the excursion price spectrum is extremely wide for any cruise — including those to the Bahamas. Decide which activities are must-do’s and which ports you can either book an independent tour or explore on your own and come up with a loose budget from there. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of food and drink (if they’re not included in your excursion).

Additional Costs for a Bahamas Cruise

Once you’ve got your cabin and shore excursions nailed down, there are other factors to take into account when planning your Bahamas cruise budget.

If you need to take a flight to get to your Bahamas cruise homeport, be sure to factor that airfare into your overall trip budget. The cost can fluctuate based on the time of year and how close-in you book it. So, start looking as soon as you book your voyage and check back often for the best price.

Taxes and Fees

On top of the cruise fare, your final payment for your cruise will include taxes and port fees. The exact number is determined by the cost of your cruise fare as well as the departure port and the ports your itinerary visits. For a three or four-day Bahamas cruise, expect to pay at least $100 per person in taxes and port fees.

On most cruise lines, daily gratuities are not included in the cruise fare. You’ll be charged separately for them at the end of the voyage. The per-person cost is different depending on the line you’re sailing and the cabin category you’re staying in. Most range from $13 to $18 per day. This means that for a three-day Bahamas cruise, plan for a total gratuity charge of $39 to $54 per person; for a four-night, $52 to $72 per person; and for a seven-night, $91 to $126 per person.

Gratuities are automatically charged. But on most cruise lines, you do have the freedom to either remove them or adjust the amount. However, we recommend sticking with the automatically charged amount, as gratuities go not only towards guest-facing crew members but also many that you’ll never meet face-to-face.

Alcoholic Beverages

If you plan to drink alcohol or other specialty beverages on board the ship, think about how much you’re likely to drink each day and budget accordingly. The price of wines and beers by the glass, cocktails, and things like milkshakes and specialty coffees vary. So, look into the average prices for your specific cruise line and figure out a rough estimate of how much you want to spend.

If you think you’ll drink enough, consider purchasing the cruise line’s beverage package (if it has one). This might help you save some money.

Specialty Dining

While your cruise ship will have plenty of included dining, you may want to try some of the specialty restaurants (which are not included in the cruise fare ). Look at a list of the specialty dining options aboard your specific ship, their costs, and decide which (if any) are a must-do for you.

Some cruise lines, such as Virgin Voyages and Viking , include wifi as part of the cost of your cruise fare. Most mainstream brands, however, charge an additional fee to access the internet system on board. Though there are some exceptions, most cruise lines charge a per-day price for internet, with multiple tiered packages.

The basic tier usually includes internet-based messaging (like iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp) as well as access to social media. It usually costs between $13 and $15 per day. Higher tiers will include access to things like web browsing, email, downloading and uploading files, and music and video streaming services. They generally cost somewhere between $18 to $25 per day.

Many cruisers prefer to disconnect during their cruise and not access the internet at all. Others want to stay connected with family and friends or work. It’s important to know that even if you don’t purchase any wifi, you’ll still be able to use your cruise line’s smartphone app.

Onboard Purchases

Other than the purchases mentioned above, there are plenty of ways to spend money on the ship that you may or may not want to take advantage of. These include things like photo prints, spa treatments or access to the spa’s thermal suite , playing in the casino, and souvenirs in the gift shop.

It can be tough to come up with a good estimate for how much you’ll spend on things like this. So, we recommend coming up with a budget for “extras” and doing your best to stick to it.

This can also apply to purchases in port. Come up with a souvenir budget and try not to go beyond it.

Three-Night Cruise

In an interior cabin, expect to pay $350 to $500 per person including taxes, fees, gratuities, and basic wifi. Four-Night Cruise

For an interior cabin, you can estimate $400 to $600 per person including taxes, fees, gratuities, and basic wifi. In a balcony cabin, expect to pay somewhere between $550 and $825 per person — plus transportation, shore excursions, and onboard purchases.

Seven-Night Cruise

In an interior cabin, expect to pay $700 to $1,050 per person, including taxes, fees, gratuities, and basic wifi. In a balcony cabin, expect to pay around $1,000 to $1,400 per person. You should also take transportation to and from the cruise homeport, shore excursions, and onboard purchases into consideration.

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary -- and for good reason. Found on Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages, Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida -- the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers are spoiled for choice. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school, and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in the summer. Plus, wave season -- when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year -- runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found during the summer, with lower temperatures during the winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

Islands in the Bahamas are found on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the U.S. East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, proximity to the U.S. East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "big eight" brands -- Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

One unique outlier is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, which exclusively operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas before returning on the ship several days later.

Additionally, BPCL has joined forces with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville to offer Margaritaville at Sea cruises , rebranding and renaming its sole ship -- Grand Classica -- to Paradise.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, head to Paradise Island, a quick taxi ride from Nassau, which boasts the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use its outdoor pools and water slides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style Johnny cakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands, which can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau , the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers visiting for the first time, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But, brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Beach Club at Bimini on part of a property operated by Resorts World. What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

At TPG, we always recommend cruising with a passport, but there are many reasons why you might want to set sail without one.

What if an opportunity pops up on short notice, and you don't have a passport yet? Or what if you forgot to renew yours when it expired? What if it's only a three-night cruise to the Bahamas, and the passport application fee is almost as much as the cruise fare? Or, maybe you have children nearing age 16 and can't justify paying for passports that will only be good for five years.

First of all, do you even need a passport to cruise ? The answer is often but not always. You have options to cruise without a passport because not every sailing requires them. Thanks to an international agreement called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , U.S. citizens can cruise on certain itineraries within North American countries using government-issued identification (like a valid driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a government-issued birth certificate).

The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport.

Before we go further, let's clarify that when we talk about cruising without a passport, we're referring to pricey passport books that some travelers do not wish to purchase. Passport cards can also be used for identification when cruising in all the places we are about to discuss; these cards are a low-cost alternative to traveling with your driver's license and birth certificate.

Let's look at the options for where you can cruise without a passport.

Cruising to Alaska is one of the easiest ways to experience all the state offers. You'll have opportunities to see glaciers and wildlife; stroll the streets of charming coastal towns; eat your fill of local crab legs and salmon; and enjoy nature on a kayak, zip line or hike.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle , San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights.

What if you really want to cruise one-way from Canada to Alaska (or vice versa)? Although Canada prefers U.S. citizens who arrive by sea or land to have a passport book, it is not required as long as they have proper identification and proof of citizenship. The U.S., however, requires one of the following WHTI-approved forms of identification for entries by land or sea: passport card, enhanced driver's license, I-872 American Indian card or trusted traveler program IDs like Nexus, Sentri and Fast.

Technically, if you have one of those forms of ID but not a passport book, you can take a one-way Alaska cruise — as long as you don't have to fly to or from Canada.

More complications arise for non-passport holders who book shore excursions that involve crossing from Alaska to Canada. White Pass and Yukon Route train rides are good examples. White Pass and Yukon Route allows cruise passengers to go on the three-hour train excursion without a passport but doesn't allow them to take any longer routes. That's their policy, not a legal requirement.

This means that Alaska cruises are one instance when the passport card would be a handy alternative to traveling with both an ID card and a birth certificate. It opens up one-way itineraries.

A cruise to the Caribbean transports you to tropical islands bathed in turquoise waters. Whether you seek warm beaches, cool drinks, water sports or cultural education, you can find a Caribbean cruise to fit the bill.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, lying 643 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Hop on a cruise ship for a direct route to the island's famous beaches and golf courses. Spring and summer are the prime seasons to visit, but cruises are possible throughout the year.

Cruising without a passport to Bermuda is also easy. Apart from a few isolated cruises stopping in Bermuda as they come or go from other destinations, there are no one-way Bermuda cruises to confuse the situation. If you plan to sail without a passport, be wary of any Bermuda cruise longer than 10 nights. Those are likely to be point-to-point cruises that happen to include Bermuda.

Passport-free cruises to Bermuda include ample five- to 10-night sailings from the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Bayonne, Boston and Manhattan. Occasional itineraries also pop up throughout the Bermuda season departing from Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston; and the Florida ports of Miami, Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Jacksonville.

Long known for delightful strands of beach and access to every imaginable form of water fun under the subtropical sun, the Bahamas are the ideal destination for easy and quick cruise vacations.

Our southern neighbor boasts two coastlines of cruise fun. Like most tropical cruise destinations, the top draws are the beaches and the ocean; however, cruise ports in Mexico also give you access to ancient Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine and an abundance of land activities.

Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports. If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama.

Western Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Riviera, includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, among others. Cruises with several major lines depart San Diego, San Pedro port in LA and Long Beach for voyages lasting anywhere from three to 10 nights.

From water sports to American history and Hawaiian culture, there's a lot to experience on a Hawaii cruise . The best part might be the ability to hop from island to island, sampling the flavors of each as you go.

Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port.

Small-ship cruise operator UnCruise Adventures also offers seven-night, inter-island Hawaiian sailings. The American-flagged ships only cruise to and from U.S. ports, so no passport is needed, as would be the case on any domestic trip.

The long-cruise options consist of 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings from San Diego, LA (Long Beach and San Pedro) and San Francisco. You won't need a passport for these closed-loop sailings, but you do need to be prepared for multiple days at sea as you cross the Pacific from California to Hawaii.

Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise.

Canada and New England

Cruises up North America's East Coast allow you to take in historical sights of early Americana, stand atop rugged cliffs on the coast of Nova Scotia or revel in the French culture of Quebec.

Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights.

Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.

We checked with a few lines for you. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

Bottom line

While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport. In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book.

Passport cards are an affordable and unquestionable alternative to carrying an ID and birth certificate. If you want to go this route, know they are not valid for travel by air into or out of any foreign country, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or Caribbean countries — which is the primary reason most travel advisers urge cruisers to have a passport book.

As we've shown, you have plenty of options for where to cruise without a passport, and many travelers do so without incident. However, anything from engine trouble on your cruise ship to bad weather or an accident in port might necessitate a flight home from a foreign country. This would put you in an awkward position if you didn't have a passport.

Plus, as much fun as simple round-trip cruises are, passports open up additional vacation possibilities in the form of longer, point-to-point and overseas trips. Don't dismiss registering for a passport, even as you consider where you can cruise without one.

News | Baltimore-bound cruise passengers arrive in Norfolk

NORFOLK — It is safe to say that most of the Carnival Legend cruise passengers did not think their vacation would end this way.

The sun had not yet risen as the cruise ship — which departed Baltimore’s port several days ago — docked at 4 a.m. Sunday at the Half Moon Cruise and Celebration Center. Downtown was quiet, many still asleep or attending a sunrise Easter service, as an impressive fleet of charter buses circled the cruise center. By 6:45 a.m., the ship’s passengers were working on their next phase of travel. For many, that meant a four-hour bus ride back to Baltimore.

Ships typically return to the port from which they leave, but when disaster struck midway through the cruise, staff had to work fast to find a port available to receive vacationers. The solution: Norfolk.

During the trip, officials closed the Port of Baltimore to all incoming and outgoing ship traffic after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when it was struck by a container ship. The bridge carrying Interstate 695 collapsed in moments, sending several vehicles into the Patapsco River.

Last week, Carnival Cruise Line announced the ship will operate out of Norfolk, and Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas will do the same. Each ship can carry more than 2,000 people.

Lines of sun-kissed cruise-goers towing suitcases began to form as the sun crested over the horizon, many donning Carnival-themed attire and fresh sunburns.

The weather Sunday morning in the Mermaid City was likely much different than conditions they were enjoying in the Bahamas just days ago. Cab drivers parked alongside buses, waiting on customers, and some spoke to each other about how Sunday was likely to be a money-maker as cruise passengers opted to rent cars or fly back to Baltimore instead of braving the bus ride.

Sandy Crow, of Manassas, and her sister Kathy Grant, stood outside Nauticus, waiting for Crow’s husband to pick them up. Crow said she heard about the bridge collapse from another passenger.

“What a tragedy,” she said.

Crow said she has been to Norfolk before, highlighting the Norfolk Mac and Cheese Festival, and the two had been celebrating a sisters’ trip together over the past week. After finding out about their future arrival in Norfolk, Crow said driving home was the preferred option.

“The captain and the whole crew was so good communicating with us. Within a day, we knew we where were going to be. It was all handled beautifully,” Crow said. “It’s about three hours (to Manassas). It’s better than taking a bus for four or five hours, and then it would be another two hours. My husband just said, ‘I’ll just drive down there.'”

As cruise ships reroute to Nauticus, the Port of Virginia is ready to receive diverted cargo traffic from the Port of Baltimore. The collapsed bridge blocks the only channel in and out of the port on the Patapsco River.  The port will be unable to receive shipping traffic until the channel is cleared , and stands to lose an estimated $15 million per day in economic activity.

Some passengers who spoke to The Virginian-Pilot said they heard the news of the tragedy from the captain, and the crew handled it the best they could. Despite the tragedy, many said the trip was still a good one although it is ending differently than they had originally planned.

For other passengers, the trip does not even end in Baltimore. Jackie Plum and her family took their Spring Break trip out of Baltimore, but they are actually from Michigan.

“When they announced that the the bridge collapsed, I think the cruise ship handled it really well. They made it as stress free as possible,” she said. “We kind of changed our plans at the last minute because so (the reroute) is adding, like, an extra four hours to our drive. Now, we have to go four hours back to Baltimore and then eight hours to Michigan. We were trying to get off the ship as fast as we can, and at the last minute, we decided to rent a car at the airport.”

For the foreseeable future, Norfolk will be welcoming more passengers, including a Royal Caribbean cruise later this week on April 4.

“You know what? Stuff happens,” Crow said. “The only thing I’m upset about is people lost their lives.”

Coast Guard searching for man who jumped off cruise ship in Bahamas

April 4 (UPI) -- The Coast Guard is searching between Cuba and the Bahamas after an allegedly drunken 20-year-old jumped from one of the upper decks of a cruise ship, officials said.

The unidentified man jumped from the 18-story Liberty of the Seas cruise ship, part of the Royal Caribbean fleet, and the 35th largest in the world, the Coast Guard said.

Witnesses said the man's father and brother watched as he jumped, seemingly on a spur of the moment, over the side and into the sea about 57 miles off the coast of the Bahamas Grand Inagua, according to the Coast Guard.

"I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30," passenger Bryan Sims tells The New York Post. " It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time."

"He was pretty drunk," Sims continued. "As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.

"When we got to them, he said to his dad, 'I'll fix this right now.' And he jumped out the window in front of us all."

"There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately," another passenger, Deborah Morrison, said. "His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can't even begin to imagine what they're going through."

"It was insane," says Sims. "It was just surreal."

The 4-day, round-trip Eastern Caribbean Cruise set sail from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on Monday and is set to return on Friday, according to CruiseMapper . The Coast Guard is conducting the search from the water and the air.
