Orca (Killer Whale) Spotting

It might surprise you to learn that orcas are not whales, despite commonly being referred to as “killer whales.” They are actually the largest member of the dolphin family, and just like dolphins, they travel in pods that include adult males, adult females, and calves. Their name actually comes from orcas that were spotted eating whales—whale killers—which eventually became killer whales.

Watch for Orcas

The orcas you’ll see in Alaska fall into two groups—residents that travel in pods from 10 to 50 and are more stable in the area, or transients that travel in smaller pods of three to seven and travel greater distances for feeding and hunting. These animals grow as large as 30 feet and tend to travel near the surface of the ocean, coming out of the water to spout every few seconds along the way. With their trademark black body, tall triangular dorsal fin, and small white patch near the eye they are easy to spot and identify.

Wildlife in the Waters

Many orcas populate the waters around Southeast Alaska near Pybus Point Lodge, and they occasionally come right inside the bay not too far from our docks. During our guided saltwater fishing excursions and daily adventuring, our guides can help increase your chances of seeing these awesome creatures.

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Shirley Johnson

Pybus Point Lodge - WOW!

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

Brandon Foote

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Kent Danjanovich

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.

Cell Tower & WiFi

Pybus Point Lodge is located on the remote and secluded far south edge of Admiralty Island National Monument. Coverage is always tricky in deep valleys and remote natural areas. We found that AT&T has the most reliable cellular service at the lodge while T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon can be picked up while out on the ocean. We do have a lodge phone you can use if necessary. If you can't get a signal, we do provide free high-speed WIFI to the lodge and cabins. A popular option is to utilize your phones WIFI calling mode to communicate and take calls while at the cabin, although we prefer to unplug and enjoy all that the island has to offer.

Humpback whale watching

The calm, cool waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage are the perfect habitat for humpback whales. Our guests tell us close encounters with these peaceful giants have changed the way they see the world – and we know just what they mean.

Fortress of the Bears

You’ll stay with us on Admiralty Island, called Xootsnoowú by native Tlingit people, which means “Fortress of the Bears.” There are more bears on our island than in all 49 other states combined – and more than 2.5x the number of people here!

Seals & Sea Lions

A short ride in one of our skiffs will take you to the mouth of a river where, if your timing is right, you can watch salmon make their final run to spawn. When it isn’t overrun by bears dining on the feast, you can walk upstream just a few minutes to a beautiful waterfall in the thick forest.

Orca (killer whale) Spotting

From tiny phosphorescent algae lighting up our private docks to enormous humpback whales hunting in our deep, calm waters, you won’t find a more beautiful place to experience Alaska. Pybus Bay is a photographer’s paradise – bald eagles and brown bears, orca, otters and sea lions, and more. We can’t wait to help you experience Alaska.

VIVID ENDEAVORS

Whale Watching in Alaska’s Icy Strait

Icy Strait is a legendary body of water that connects the protected inside waters of Southeast Alaska to the open Pacific Ocean. The nutrient rich waters of Southeast Alaska make it one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. During the summer months, these abundant fjords become the ideal home and feeding ground for a large population of Humpback Whales. Humpbacks travel to the area every year after their winter breeding season in the warmer waters of Hawaii and Mexico. After navigating over 3000 miles, we often see the same individual humpbacks return to Icy Strait year after year.

Humpbacks aren’t the only wildlife in the area. Our trips often encounter Sea Lions, Seals, Porpoise, Sea Otters, Bald Eagles, Coastal Brown Bears along the shoreline, & our favorite – the awe inspiring Orca better known as the Killer Whale.

Icy Strait Whale & Wildlife Endeavor

$195 Per Guest Or $1,131 for a Private Tour (Up to 6 Guests)

Our excursion is 4 hours from start to finish with over 3.25 hours on the water! We designed our trip to be one of the longest whale watching tours offered in Icy Strait. This extra time allows us to make multiple stops while not feeling rushed. We limit our vessel to 6 passengers max (whether private or mixed) to provide our guests with an uncrowded, relaxed, and intimate wildlife experience. On the day of your tour, we will pick you up from your cruise ship port – Icy Strait Point and return you via van. We strive to provide each guest with a unique and personalized experience aboard our custom Twin Vee Catamaran.

We guarantee whale sightings or you will receive a full refund.

You have the option to book by the number of people in your party ($195 per guest) OR you can book the entire boat ($1,131) for a private experience. On a private tour, you and your travel companions will be the only guests aboard the vessel with Captain Seth. 6 guests max for all trips .

We designed our booking calendar to accommodate as many cruise ships as possible. For each tour, you will notice the corresponding ship(s) listed. Please be sure to double check that your ship’s name is listed for the specific tour you choose.

*If you are like us and would prefer to spend your entire day on the water, we can often design a longer custom charter for you. With the additional tour time, we can take you to explore remote areas that aren’t accessible in a normal tour’s timeframe. Call or Email to discuss our custom options and competitive rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i wear will it be cold and raining.

Southeast Alaska is classified as a temperate rainforest. This means we have mild winters and cool temperate summers. There’s always a chance of encountering rain while you’re visiting SE Alaska, although usually only a light mist that you often forget is happening. For optimum comfort, especially on those extra rainy days, we recommend bringing a rain jacket and dressing in layers. The summertime temperatures are usually between 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit, although it can feel significantly warmer than that on sunny days in June, July, & August.  Often times a sweater or even a tshirt is fine but having an extra layer nearby for colder days, wind, and rain is recommended.

What type of vessel will we be on?

Our vessel is a custom 32ft Twin Vee Catamaran. Catamaran’s are extremely stable, smooth riding, and the ideal platform for watching marine wildlife in Southeast Alaska. Our vessel has an enclosed heated cabin with windows for panoramic viewing. In the cabin, we have a private marine head (bathroom) should you need to use the restroom while underway. Outside, we have a 360 degree walk-around viewing deck, ideal for photography. With our quiet motors and indoor/outdoor viewing areas you will often hear the wildlife in addition to seeing it.

*Although most guests never encounter seasickness on our vessel, we recommend taking medication before we pick you up at the Excursions Hub if you are prone to motion sickness.

Will we see Bubble Net Feeding? Will we see Orcas?

At various times throughout the summer Icy Strait becomes one of the few areas in the world where Humpbacks will gather in groups to engage in a cooperative feeding behavior known as Bubble Net Feeding. This is a truly incredible event that makes for great pictures and even better memories. We monitor reports and conditions closely to make sure we put you in the best position possible to see this behavior. We also encounter Orca/Killer Whales on many of our trips. Although we won’t see Orcas or Bubble Net Feeding every day as conditions and feeding habits change often, rest assured this will be our main priority if occurring that day.

Terms and Conditions

We limit our boat to 6 passengers max (whether private or mixed) to provide our guests with an uncrowded, relaxed, and personalized experience.

We have a 2 passenger per trip minimum. If you book 1 seat and the vessel hasn’t booked 2 seats total by the day of your tour – we will reach out to you with options for rescheduling or converting to the minimum passenger requirement. In this situation, if you are unable to reschedule or convert, you will be refunded.

If your trip doesn’t see a whale, you will be refunded.

Bookings that are cancelled 30 days in advance of your tour date will be refunded. No refunds will be given for cancellations attempted by guests within 30 days of their tour date.

If your Cruise Ship is delayed or misses the port altogether – we will work with you to reschedule a new time if possible or give you a refund.

If we have unusually inclement weather on the day of your tour, we will still meet you at the Excursions Hub as planned and discuss modified cruising options. If we determine the trip is not possible due to weather, you will be refunded.

Guests must be capable of traversing a potentially steep ramp (depending on tide), stepping up/down from our van, and stepping up/down again to board the vessel.

If you have a wheelchair/walker/stroller or limited mobility – contact us before booking to further discuss details.

Captain Seth

Captain Seth has an extensive history running whale watching tours, tidewater glacier tours, & offshore fishing charters. He holds a 100 Ton USCG Master Captain’s License.

Seth first arrived in Alaska in 2012 while finishing his degree in Environmental Engineering. He quickly fell in love with Southeast Alaska and, after graduating college, spent several years captaining vessels in the area. Apart from nearly a decade of whale watching experience, Seth’s Alaskan resumé includes sport fishing for salmon and halibut, commercial crab fishing, and captaining long range boat charters into Tracy Arm Ford’s Terror Wilderness where he would navigate guests through the floating ice up to the face of the tidewater glaciers.

In 2019, Seth was given the unique opportunity to live and work on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Research Vessel. Seth spent about a year and a half offshore conducting various types of research for NOAA centered around Marine Mammals and Fisheries.

In 2020, with NOAA ships forced back to port and the absence of tourism in Alaska due to the pandemic, Seth ventured down to the Florida Keys. During that time, Seth began running charters along the Florida Everglades where he was able to continue his love of showing guests the local environment and marine wildlife. Also while in the Keys, Seth was fortunate enough to work with some of the best offshore fishing outfits in the world, running charters out of Key Largo, Islamorada, and Marathon.

Now with tourism back up and running Seth has returned to his forever home of Southeast Alaska doing what he loves and sharing his favorite body of water, Icy Strait, with you.

ALASKA WHALE WATCHING

Alaska Whale Watching near Seward on the Kenai Fjords 360

WHALE WATCHING WITH MAJOR MARINE TOURS

Our cruises into  Kenai Fjords National Park  offer some of the best whale watching opportunities in Alaska. Cruising among some of the world’s largest mammals and observing their behavior is an experience like no other.

Humpbacks and orcas are the most commonly seen whale species in Kenai Fjords National Park. Gray whales are seen only in the spring as they pass through the Gulf of Alaska on their annual migration. Fin whales and minke whales are also found in the area, though sightings of those species are rare.

HUMPBACK WHALE

Breaching humpback

The giant humpback whale, well known for its spectacular breaching, is very common in Alaskan waters. Weighing up to 40 tons, humpbacks feed mainly on plankton and krill and can consume as much as one ton per day. They use fringed plates in their mouth called baleen to filter small food from the water. Although it’s possible to see humpbacks year-round in Alaska, most migrate to the warmer waters of Hawaii in the winter where they reproduce and give birth. This migration takes approximately 4 to 8 weeks and spans nearly 3,500 miles. During the spring, humpbacks migrate back to Alaska to spend the summers feeding in Alaska’s nutrient-rich waters.

ORCA (KILLER WHALE)

Orca Whale watching near Seward, Alaska

Often called killer whales, orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family and can swim up to 30mph. They are 15 – 30 feet long and can weigh up to 10 tons. Orcas generally travel in pods. Unlike humpbacks, orcas do not display any regular migration patterns. Instead, their movement is based on food availability, socializing with other pods, and ice coverage. There are three main classifications of orcas: resident, transient, and offshore. Resident orcas, which are most commonly seen on our tours, feed primarily on fish. Transient orcas come to the area to feed on marine mammals like seals and Steller sea lions and are less commonly seen. Offshore orcas feed mainly on sharks in the open ocean and are rarely seen in the area. Orcas are distinguished by the black and white markings and tall dorsal fins that make each orca unique.

Gray Whale Watching Cruise

Every year, gray whales migrate over 10,000 miles round-trip between Baja and the Bering and Chukchi Seas – the longest migration route of any mammal. These whales begin migrating north in late February and arrive in Alaska in the spring, spending the summer feeding in shallow Arctic waters before migrating south in mid-October. They deliver their calves in the warm, protected lagoons off the coast of Baja in the winter. Newborn gray whales weigh approximately 1,500 pounds and adults can weigh between 16 and 45 tons and reach 36 – 50 feet in length. Gray whales are the only baleen whales that are primarily bottom feeders. They lay on their sides on the ocean floor and suck up sediment, filtering out food with their baleen.

VIEWING TIME: March – May BEST VIEWING TIME: Mid-April – May

Fin whale

Fin whales, also known as finback whales, are the second largest mammals and are among the fastest of all whales, capable of speeds of up to 23 mph. They can be found in all oceans, migrating from the warm waters during the winter to the colder waters during the summer. Like all baleen whales, fin whales feed on small fish and shrimp-like creatures called krill. Fin whales prefer the open ocean and generally travel alone, although pods of 5-6 have been seen together.

VIEWING TIME: May – September

WHALE BEHAVIOR

Like all mammals, whales breathe air into their lungs, making it easy to spot them on the surface of the water as they come up for air. This behavior is called  spouting , and is the most commonly-seen whale behavior on our cruises.

In addition to spouting, you may see behaviors such as  breaching  or  lunging . Breaching is when a whale leaps more than half-way out of the water, and lunging is when a whale leaps less than half way out of the water. Some experts believe that breaching and lunging are part of the feeding habits of whales, while others believe that this behavior is simple playfulness.

You may also witness  spyhopping , when a whale sticks its head out of the water to examine its surroundings. Finally, you may see  tail lobbing  or  tail slapping . Tail lobbing is when a whale lifts its tail fluke out of the water and slaps it down on the water’s surface, often repeating the movement several times. Tail slapping is when a whale uses its fins or flippers to slap the surface of the water.

Excursion Overview

In search of orcas in early summer.

In the nutrient-rich waters outside of Seward, orcas are well known to frequent the area from mid-spring to early summer. On this 4-hour expedition for orcas, your experienced captain will be communicating with many other vessels to pinpoint the location of the closest orca sightings, giving you the best chance of seeing a pod up close! This cruise does not have a planned route, so each time will be unique to you. As you make your way to the location your naturalist guides will let you know everything there is about orcas, humpback whales, gray whales, and the other local flora and fauna. If that's not close enough, through the onboard hydrophone, you could hear the calls and communication of the whales in real-time! Please note: This tour only operates from May to June. While wildlife is abundant, it is not guaranteed.

It was wonderful! We saw lots of orcas. Also humpback whales, sea lions, and seals. The boat was comfortable. We all had assigned seating at tables. All tables had window views. Whales are seen in Alaska throughout the year, but by far the largest concentration are in Alaska's waters from about April through September. Grey whales migrate through to feeding grounds in arctic waters. Humpbacks return to stay for the summer in places like the Inside Passage and Prince William Sound. Some whales also follow the salmon, with belugas swimming into Turnagain Arm and transient orca pods flowing into Resurrection Bay.

The day cruises listed below provide some of the best opportunities to see whales in Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. For travelers on an Alaska land package, getting onto the water to catch a glimpse at these marine giants is a must.

Dolphin Jet Boat Tours

We provide the ideal boats for whale watching because they are comfortable and you can get closer to the whales.

This way you can better enjoy them without the obstruction of a great crowd or distance. Instead of being farther removed, as in other boats, you are right at the whale’s level from the deck and bow.

When the whales breach, they breach above you: an awesome sight to behold! While on the water, our experienced naturalist will guide you through the tour and answer any questions you may have about the flora and fauna of Alaska.

Breathtaking Wildlife

Whale watching tours in juneau.

Humpback whales migrate to Alaska every spring, spending the winter in their feeding grounds near Japan, Hawaii, and Mexico. The whales migrate through the interior waters of Southeast Alaska in the spring, following their migration route from their winter breeding grounds to the Chukchi Sea. In the summer, they may be sighted throughout the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska. Their migration patterns are highly unpredictable, so it is important to plan ahead.

The whale population in Juneau is quite large. While you can see them from the tour boat, you’ll be out on the open water, so it’s a good idea to pack plenty of layers if you want to be comfortable on the tour. Some boats even feature an amplified hydrophone system, which lets you hear whale song from a distance. Other wildlife that you may come across while whale watching in Juneau include bears and blacktail deer running along the shore.

A tour that includes a hike to the Mendenhall Glacier is a great way to make a memorable day in Juneau. This excursion includes a visit to the Visitor Center and a 90-minute hike to Nugget Falls.

Alaska Whale Watch Tours provide you with 3-4 hours of viewing time, which is more than most other whale watching tours offer. Several whale watching companies boast of having smaller boats with six to eight guests. However, the price of these tours is often much higher than other whale watching tours. And since you’ll be on the water for over three hours, it’s well worth the extra time.

The regulations of whale watching operations are specific to the species and the geographic area, but these regulations must be adhered to in order to protect these animals. The International Whaling Commission has formulated guidelines for whale-watching, including distances between whales and vessels. Moreover, regulations should specify the types of vessels used, how often whales are viewed, and how many tours are offered each day. Alaska Whale Watch closely follows these regulations and obtains permits annually.

Daily Boat Tours

Best time to go whale watching in juneau.

alaska orca tour

There are several different types of whales in the area, and you can expect to see either a humpback whale or an orca. If you are lucky, you might see orcas, although this is not guaranteed. In most cases, you’ll see a humpback whale, orcas’ back, fins, and tail. But even if you don’t spot orcas, you can still enjoy the scenery and the wildlife in Juneau.

What’s the best time of day to go?

Whatever time best works for your schedule! Whales, like all cetaceans, have unique brains in that they can sleep with one side of their brain while swimming, surfacing for air, and feeding with the other side. This means they’re active 24 hours a day!

What will I see out there?

Whales!!! We offer a money-back guarantee if we’re unable to find you humpback whales. Orca sightings are possible – not guaranteed though! – and bald eagles, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and Dall’s porpoises are common.

Will I get back to my ship on time?

Yep! We keep a close eye on ship schedules to ensure you don’t miss your all-aboard call.

What about your boats? What’s the deal with them?

Our boats are enclosed and climate-controlled for comfort, with large outside decks, a restroom, and comfortable forward-facing seats. The boats have water-propelled jets, so they’re fast! This isn’t a pleasure cruise – we get you out to where the whales are!

Which boat will I be on? How many people will be on it?

We make the “which boats go” decision on the day of the tour based on what the water/weather is doing and which captains have a day off! All of our boats have the same indoor/outdoor setup, facilities, refreshments, and naturalist.

Why are smaller boats better? Do they get closer to the whales?

Smaller boats are better because, honestly, who wants to be on a 150-person boat? Our size and speed let us get out to the whales, enjoy them, and have a great experience, and then get you back to enjoy all the rest that Juneau has to offer!

As far as proximity to the whales goes, we abide very strictly by the Marine Mammal Protection Act , and the safety and well-being of the whales is our top priority. Because of this, we don’t approach the whales beyond a certain distance, we regulate our speed when near the whales, and we stay with a whale/group of whales for a specific period of time. This is all to ensure that we don’t threaten or harass our best water friends, so they’ll continue to love us and our boats and will keep returning to these waters!

What should I wear?

Whatever you want! Our tours don’t include a lot of standing around outside in the rain, so most people are fine with something on the bottom, something on the top, and something waterproof over it.

Whale Quest & Orca Point Lodge

This tour combines two Juneau favorites: the Whale Watching & Wildlife Quest and the Orca Point Lodge Salmon Bake .  Enjoy a “whales guaranteed” wildlife cruise aboard a deluxe catamaran, and then step ashore on a remote island to enjoy a delicious salmon bake feast in a spectacular wilderness setting.

FULL DESCRIPTION

This exciting tour combines a “whales guaranteed” cruise with Alaska’s finest wilderness salmon bake.  Following a motorcoach ride to scenic Auke Bay, you’ll board a waterjet-powered catamaran specially designed for wildlife viewing.  Relax in the warm, comfortable cabin, surrounded by large windows, as you ply the island-studded waters of Stephen’s Passage.  This area is world-renowned as a favored summer feeding ground for humpback whales.

Once whales have been sighted, your skilled captain will maneuver the vessel to allow exceptional viewing and photographic opportunities as these graceful giants slowly arc their massive tail flukes into the air.  Don’t forget your camera, and be sure to bring a warm jacket to wear on the topside observation deck; the whales are often close enough to hear them breathe!  An onboard naturalist will explain the behavior and habitat of the humpback whale and other wildlife you may encounter, including killer whales, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoise, harbor seals, bald eagles and more.

Next, you’ll take a leisurely break from cruising to step ashore at Orca Point Lodge on beautiful Colt Island, to enjoy a feast that includes fresh-grilled wild Alaska salmon, chicken kabobs, vegetable medley, rice pilaf, cole slaw, fresh-hot rolls and desserts.  The lodge offers peaceful seclusion with modern comforts in a remote wilderness setting.  Visit the marine life touch pool, scan the coast of Admiralty Island with a powerful spotting scope or take a relaxing stroll along the beach before reboarding your catamaran for the return cruise to Auke Bay.

Orca Cove is a 20 minute fast boat ride away from downtown Ketchikan and the entire experience is on the water. It’s the perfect experience to get away from town for an adventure while giving you time to see Ketchikan during  shorter port calls.

While we don’t see killer whales everyday, spending the entire three hours on the water provides excellent chances to spot marine wildlife throughout the entire excursion. We often do see whales, sea lions, seals, bald eagles or even bears and deer along the coast. Th immense array of inter tidal creatures are certainly a Southeast Alaskan favorite!

The true highlight of the Orcas Cove tour is exploring the secluded coves and rainforest islands by sea kayak with friendly, knowledgeable guides, although the local smoked salmon, hot drinks or cold Alaskan beers onboard the mothership after paddling are ranked a close second by many of our guests.

We understand that vacation time is precious, and it can be difficult to choose from the many tour options throughout Alaska. Here are the top 5 reasons to make a kayaking tour with Southeast Sea Kayaks in Ketchikan part of your Alaska vacation.

1. We’re kayaking in Alaska!

If kayaking in Alaska is on your bucket list, then you have come to the right place. Paddling a sea kayak is a great way to slow down and enjoy the wilderness and wildlife without engine noise or crowds. Ketchikan is the perfect place to sea kayak because we are located on the protected Inside Passage. We are not exposed to the open sea, and the water is generally calm. We also have hundreds of miles of rainforest shoreline that are accessible only by boat to explore.

2. Small Groups

During the summer, there are up to 7 cruise ships a day visiting Ketchikan, but there will only be 6 on your Orcas Cove Tour. Small groups make our tours safe and personal. Our tours are not sold onboard cruise ships because we prefer to cater to small groups. Being independent doesn’t mean we won’t get you back on time! In over 20 years, no one on our tours has ever missed their cruise ship.

3. Tour Local

We live year-round in Ketchikan. Running tours in the summer and working in commercial diving fisheries here in the winter. This is our home and we do our best to hire a local crew or return Alaskan guides every season.

4. Designed for Beginners, Enjoyed by Experts

Never been kayaking? Not a problem. In fact, many of our guests have never kayaked before. We are experts at creating fun, safe and enjoyable kayaking experiences for people of all ages and abilities. Expert kayakers will also enjoy the extraordinary experience of kayaking in Southeast Alaska, and because our groups are so small, we can tailor each tour to suit the group.

5. We are passionate about what we do.

We love Alaska, and we love to kayak. Everyone at Southeast Sea Kayaks has their own “Alaska story,” and we are passionate about creating unique and memorable Alaskan experiences for every one of our guests
