Sightseeing:

Kahului, Maui's deep-water port, is home to nearly a third of the island's resident population and busy with shipping traffic. While commerce keeps the city bustling, it also means that Kahului's waterfront is more ships and sailing-vessels then sand. Beaches east of the city center are certainly nothing to sniff at though, whether you're after a swim or a few hours of sun.

Less than a landing strip away from Maui's main airport in Kahului, the Kanaha Beach Park is rated one of the best places to learn how to sailboard in the world and consequently most visitors happily let the sound of the surf drown out the noise of the flights landing behind the trees. The same winds that made the area popular with sail boarders have lured in kite-boarders, though sea-kayakers and tentative surfers also find the regular breeze and gentle swell a good way to get up to speed before venturing on to the house-high breaks Hawaii is famous for.

If you think water sports are better left to the birds, stop in at the Kanaha Pond State Sanctuary , also close to the airport, for views of commercial airlines, migratory waterfowl and the endangered Hawaiian stilt and coot.

Kahului's city center boasts such home-town amenities as shopping malls and the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum .

Tours Excursions Transportation:

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

It's best to rent a car to see the island's most visited attractions. Public transportation is not a good alternative. All major firms are located here. Make reservations in advance, as they use shuttles to get you to your car.

Nearby Places:

For more of the historic and less of the air-conditioned mall, head out of town along Route 320 to Wailuku, Maui's county-seat with several historic buildings and a museum that exhibits relics from the missionaries-in-Hawaii era.

Continue up Route 320, the 'Road to 'Iao', for ' Iao Valley State Park . A rock pillar, 'The Needle' rises up out of the foliage to a height of 2,250 feet above sea level. It was once a look-out and also an altar. Exploring the views and verdant greenery in the park on a number of short hikes requires, however, no big sacrifice.

Watch for sugarcane fields on the drive out of Kahului. The city is 20 miles-a 45 minute drive-east of Lahaina around Puu Kukui , at 5,788 feet the highest peak in the West Maui Mountains.

Kahului is 38 miles north of Haleakala National Park and 23 east of Lahaina.

Shopping and Food

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Cruises from/to Kahului, Maui, Hawaii

Kahului, maui, hawaii cruise port.

  • For fun in the sun, find Kanaha Beach Park. Located behind a patch of shady ironwood trees, this mile-long expanse is a great place to swim and watch multitudes of kitesurfers and windsurfers, where offshore breezes create perfect conditions for these particular water sports.
  • Birdwatchers will want to visit the Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, with no fewer than three endangered Hawaiian bird species: the native coot, black-crowned night herons, and ae?o. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971, the park is relatively easy to find, thanks to its location near a main road.
  • For budding and established botanists, a visit to the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens is a must. Created on the grounds of the former Maui Zoological and Botanical Gardens, you can learn about native plants and also see a good selection of Polynesian-introduced plants. You can go it alone, use the audio tour, or get a personal guided tour.
  • For a taste of regional art, the Schaefer International Gallery has different exhibitions throughout the year which include contemporary local artists and native Hawaiian arts. One of the largest museum exhibition spaces in the state, the venue has 4,000 square feet where artists can display their work.

Maui Cruise Port Guide To Lahaina And Kahului Harbors

Tendering to the Ovation of the Seas in Lahaina Harbor

Maui ports have the ability to accommodate large cruise ships at either Kahului Harbor or Lahaina Harbor. Norwegian Cruise Line has one ship, the Pride of America homeported in Honolulu Harbor and sails around the Hawaiian Islands year-round.

However, some cruise ship itineraries include a Maui port as they reposition to and from the Pacific Northwest for the Alaska cruise season. In the fall, you can cruise between Vancouver and Hawaii , and in spring, it’s the reverse itinerary.

Also, Princess, Carnival, Seabourn, and Viking Cruise Lines offer 14 to 32-day roundtrip Hawaiian cruises from Los Angeles, California.

You also have the option to sail out of San Francisco on the Crown or Royal Princess.

If you’re cruising to or around the Hawaiian Islands, you may spend a day or more in a Maui cruise port.

If you’re scheduled to spend two days in Maui, cruise ship passengers can opt for an overnight stay in a hotel. This option is ideal if you plan to attend a late-night luau or have a shore excursion far from the dock.

Lahaina Harbor Vs. Kahului Harbor

[ UPDATE ] Due to the fires in Maui, cruise ships will not be visiting Lahaina until further notice. Those that were scheduled to stop in Lahaina will reroute to another port.

If your cruise itinerary includes a stop or two in Maui, you’ll want to check the cruise ship schedule to see which port is included. Lahaina Harbor is located on the west side of Maui.

Tendering in Lahaina, Maui

It doesn’t have a cruise port for ships to dock. Instead, vessels anchor off the coast of Lahaina, and cruise ship guests tender using smaller boats to downtown Lahaina.

The tendering process can be slow, with priority given to higher-class cruise loyalty members and those who have booked an excursion through the cruise line.

If you’re planning a private tour, factor in your tendering time, when selecting an excursion time.

In front of the tendering area, a giant Banyan tree in Lahaina Banyan Court welcomes visitors.

Giant banyan tree in Lahaina Banyan Court

Ships that visit Lahaina for more than one day, generally don’t run tenders throughout the night. So, if you plan to stay out late, you’ll want to check what time the tenders stop running.

Alternatively, some cruise ships go to the eastern side of the island to Kahului Harbor. If you’re docking in Kahului, this is a Maui commercial port away from the tourist area. However, you won’t need to tender, which means you’ll get off faster.

A two-day stop here means you can leave and join your cruise ship throughout the night, as the gangway remains open for 24 hours. There’s not much within walking distance.

Kahului, Maui

To access the Island of Maui, visit Haleakala National Park , or drive the Road to Hana, you’ll want to rent a vehicle. Kahului provides the best option.

If you have traveled to Maui without doing any research and didn’t book a car, don’t fret. Some cruise passengers walk to Queen Ka’ahumanu Center from Kahului.

It’s an ideal place to do some shopping, enjoy some fresh fruit and browse a market.

Where To Get A Rental Car In The Port?

With easy access to Kahului Airport, guests docking in Kahului Harbor can pre-arrange car rentals . You can choose from Dollar, Thrifty, Ace, Budget, Hertz, Alamo, Avis, and Sixt.

Ovation of the Seas cruise ship anchored in Lahaina Harbor. A waterfall and breaching humpback whale in Maui

Depending on the size of your cruise ship, there could be hundreds of passengers getting a vehicle for the day. While some car companies offer a free shuttle service from the port, I found it quicker to get a taxi.

When docked for two days, it can be challenging to find overnight parking near the port. Remember to only park in designated areas or you risk getting towed.

If you’re scheduled to visit Lahaina, you’ll have quicker access to beautiful beaches, snorkeling, and whale watching (in the winter months). However, Lahaina doesn’t have a port.

If you plan to spend the day browsing and dining on Front Street, you don’t necessarily need a car.

Front Street in Lahaina, Maui

But having your own transportation gives you the freedom to do a road trip to the North Coast, or drive to Kihei, and take a Molokini Crater snorkeling tour .

There are no car rental companies within walking distance of the tendering area. Instead, you’ll need to get a taxi or shuttle to the car rental venues.

Hertz offers the closest location at 3 miles from Lahaina. Budget and Avis are a bit further away at 11 Halawai Dr, almost a 5-mile journey.

Maui’s Beaches

It’s easy to see why Maui is the second most popular isle in the Hawaiian archipelago. The gorgeous island boasts fantastic sandy beaches all along the west side of the island.

So, sun lovers can forego the cruise ship Lido deck pool and head to a Maui beach instead. In town, you can walk to Lahaina Beach and a bit further is Baby Beach.

North of Lahaina, Ka’anapali Beach is the perfect place for swimming, snorkeling, and cliff diving. It’s easily reached by public transit if you didn’t rent a car.

Ka'anapali Beach, Maui

Nearby, Whaler’s Village provides the perfect mall to get those last-minute gifts or do some personal outlet shopping.

Kahekili Beach offers the ultimate jewel for snorkeling. Arrive early in the day to enjoy calmer waters.

With showers and public washrooms, it’s a less crowded option than Ka’anapali to the south.

Kapalua Bay and DT Fleming Beaches are also nice providing the ocean swells aren’t too rough for swimming.

The Kapalua area is better known for its golfing. The area draws golf enthusiasts to test their skills at one of their lush golf courses.

South of Lahaina, the beaches are equally beautiful and the choices are plentiful. Sugar, Charley Young, and Kamaole Beach Park’s I, II, and III allow beach time with fewer crowds.

Shore Excursions From Kahului

If your vessel is docking in the cruise port in Kahului, Maui, the airport’s location close to the commercial dock means you have access to Maui helicopter tours.

Whether you choose a short flight over the West Maui Mountains or an extended one to see Hana and Haleakala, it’s a nice way to enjoy some sightseeing.

Although, if it’s your first time in Hawaii, you’ll want to take a self-guided tour on the Maui Hwy.

Waterfall on the Road to Hana in Maui

The route to Hana  offers a picturesque journey filled with cascading waterfalls, stunning ocean views, a lava tube, and an opportunity to taste the world’s best banana bread.

On route, Ho’okipa Beach Park provides the best chance to see Hawaiian sea turtles. This iconic journey includes 600 curves, and over 50 bridges, many of which, are one lane.

Haleakala National Park offers another option for a port day. Haleakala, meaning “house of the sun” rises over 10,000 feet above sea level.

The switchback drive has changing weather conditions, so it may be hot at the base and quite chilly at the top. However, the reward for making the journey is amazing views above the cloud line.

Its moonlike landscape is captivating, providing unique photographs for the avid photographer. Those keen to explore can choose one of many hikes into the dormant cater.

Moonlike landscape in Haleakala National Park

If you’re docked for two days, the beautiful sunrise should be on your Maui itinerary. This bucket list experience has become so popular, you now need a reservation to attend the iconic event.

However, if you book a tour, you don’t need a reservation and can leave the driving to someone else.

For thrill-seekers, the downhill bike provides a unique experience. The sunrise tour requires you to rise before the birds.

Then you’ll be transported to the Haleakala visitor center and given a bike to make the switchback descent. It’s an adventure to get your heart pumping.

For a mellower pace, a visit to Iao Valley State Park provides a walk through a lush forest with cultural history. It’s a short hike to the lookout to get a better view of the Iao Needle.

Iao Needle in Maui

This area now requires a reservation for parking and visitation by non-residents.

Things To Do Around Lahaina Town

With an average temperature of 82 to 88F (28 to 31C), Lahaina provides the perfect playground for watersports or a lazy day on the beach.

Front Street becomes a hub of activity late morning as businesses open and boutiques showcase their wares. With many outdoor patios, the food choices are plentiful.

The western side of the isle has its own iconic drive, sometimes called the “other road to Hana.”

This road trip travels on the Honoapiilani Hwy from Lahaina northwards and joins Kahekili Hwy around to Kahului.

My GPS showing the switchbacks on the Kahekili Hwy in Maui

Beyond Punalau Beach, the road becomes a series of switchbacks with blind corners and sections that can only accommodate one vehicle.

If you meet another driver, one of you could be reversing quite a distance to the nearest pullout. Let’s hope it’s the one with good backup skills.

T this scenic drive provides stunning ocean views, a rugged landscape, and a selection of tourist attractions.

These include the Nakalele Blowhole, Nakalele Point Lighthouse, and access to the Olivine Pools trailhead.

For families, the Maui Ocean center makes a great day out and a great way to escape the sun. Named as one of the top aquariums in the world, expect to spend about three hours enjoying the exhibits.

It takes a 25-minute drive to reach the center, southeast of Lahaina. At under USD 45 for adults and USD 29 for children, you’ll enjoy species you may have missed snorkeling.

Along with tropical fish, the tanks have stingrays, jellyfish, octopi, sea turtles, and sharks.

For those who didn’t rent a car but want to cover more ground, you can rent e-bikes in Maui. Boss Frogs in Lahaina rents electric bicycles and regular bicycles. E-bikes are easy to ride and inexpensive, and a fully charged bike has a range of 40 miles.

Boss Frogs has the option to do a bike and snorkel rental, which includes snorkel gear and saddle bags to carry them.

Karen riding an e-bike rental in Maui

The Atlantis Submarine allows you to view underwater life without getting wet. The submarine dives to a depth of 100 feet, where the corals are thriving and marine life flourishes.

With large portal windows, you can try to spot certain fish species around a sunken ship.

The small Maui Dragon Fruit Farm is a little-known attraction that provides unique tours. You can opt for just the farm tour, where you’ll learn about what’s cultivated on the hillside farm.

However, to make the tour more exciting, consider the ziplining or aqua ball add-ons.

Their zipline is fairly short and allows guests to do four runs. Having done ziplining before, this one is more suited for beginners or children.

Aquaball at the Maui dragon fruit farm

Their aqua ball runs provide a great way to cool off after the hot farm tour.

You’ll need a bathing suit, and participants can do two runs in the giant hamster ball. It might be an unusual thing to do in Maui, but it was a barrel of laughs.

The Maui Butterfly Farm offers a fun and interactive excursion for families and adults.

While the farm is small, it’s dedicated to preserving the butterfly population, and its educational program shows us the importance of maintaining a healthy environment for butterflies to thrive.

On a tour, you’ll walk through a live flight house and see the butterflies flutter around you. The guide will show you how to feed the butterflies and soon they’ll be landing on you.

Monarch Butterflies at the Maui Butterfly Farm

You can also see the metamorphosis of a caterpillar, to a chrysalis, then to a butterfly.

The facility studies the decline in the number of Monarch Butterflies. While it breeds the Monarchs, it doesn’t allow a release unless there is a food source to ensure the viability of the species.

The small group tours take about 45 minutes, so you’ll have lots of time for other things.

Tours From Lahaina Harbor

During the winter (December to mid-April), humpback whales migrate to Maui to mate and give birth. It’s the ideal time to take a whale-watching tour.

Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel, Makai Adventures, and Pacific Whale offer tours from the harbor, next to the tender area.

The best months for viewing are January through March. You could witness a breach, pectoral slap, or tail throw during a tour.

It’s a heart-stopping moment to see such antics from a colossal creature.

A humpback breaching in Lahaina, Maui

There’s no better way to enjoy Hawaii than on a Maui sunset cruise. With warm trade winds and a setting sun, you’ll savor paradise with ukulele music and refreshments.

As the drinks keep flowing, the views don’t end from historic Lahaina and your cruise ship to Molokai and Lanai.

From Lahaina Harbor, kayak rentals are plentiful if you don’t mind a little workout. You can paddle the shallow waters along the shoreline with a two-hour rental.

Hawaiian sea turtles are regularly sighted, and occasionally, spinner dolphins make a surprise appearance.

Late Night Tours

If you’re scheduled to spend two days in Maui, it’s the perfect opportunity to do a luau or evening event.

Visiting Hawaii without a luau might be compared to bread without butter. Maui offers fantastic luaus with the majority near the Lahaina area.

Consistently ranked as number one, it’s hard to beat the story-telling at the Old Lahaina Luau.

While it doesn’t feature the iconic fire dancing, it offers shows 7 days a week, except they are booked months in advance.

Another highly ranked luau is Andaz Luau. Unlike the former, it’s only available three nights a week.

Maui luau dance presentation

The Myths of Maui at the Royal Lahaina Resort is available every day. rums of the Pacific, Maui Nui Luau (Sheraton), and Wailele (Westin Maui Resort & Spa) provide other options.

Since luaus aren’t always available every day, you’ll want to compare your cruising schedule.

No matter which one you attend, the humble stories, tranquil hula, and breathtaking fire dancing will captivate you.

The authentic luau gives you a chance to sample Hawaiian and Polynesian classics like Kalua pig, Huli Huli chicken, and Macadamia-crusted Mahi-Mahi.

No matter which Maui cruise port you stop at, you’ll enjoy a day or two on a paradise island.

Whether you take a private tour or book an excursion through the cruise line, you’ll realize this is one of the best islands to honeymoon, or enjoy a tropical getaway.

Before returning to the cruise ship, make sure to try Ululani’s Shave Ice or Dole Whip. One taste and you know you’re in paradise.

Maui's Kahului Harbor

History, weather, & things to do.

If you are planning a cruise to the Valley Isle of Maui, you're in for a real treat. From the top of the impressive Haleakala , to the stunning waterfalls, to the white, yellow, black, and even red sand beaches, you're sure to be left awestruck by the island's beauty. But before you start exploring, your first stop will be Kahului Harbor.

Kahului Harbor is located on Maui's north central coast, just over 1 mile from the town of the same name, and just over 2 miles from the Kahului Airport . Kahului is the largest community on the island and serves as its retail center. The harbor has a long history of being an important center of commerce in the islands.

Kahului Harbor History

King Kamehameha I conquered the islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. Shortly thereafter, whalers began to stop at the harbor to stock up on supplies, and shops sprouted up to meet the whalers' needs. A few decades later, the whaling trade began to decline, and an economic void was created. But is wasn't long before the sugar industry stepped in to fill it.

Kahului was established in 1850 when Henry Baldwin and Samuel Alexander acquired land to plant sugar cane, and, after a 17-mile irrigation ditch was built to supply water from Haleakala, the plantation flourished. The men soon purchased more land to build sugar processing mills. The success of the plantation meant an abundance of jobs, and as more workers arrived, the town built shops, roads, schools, churches, and railways to meet the increasing demands for retail and community resources.

The harbor and town prospered until 1900, when the bubonic plague invaded the area and Kahului was burned to the ground in order to eliminate the disease-ridden rats that spread the plague. However, the town was swiftly rebuilt and firmly reestablished itself as an indispensible commercial harbor. By 1901, Kahului had a population of nearly 28,000; a large percentage of whom were Chinese and Japanese immigrants who worked in the sugar industry.

Over the next few years, the harbor continued to grow and was able to accommodate larger vessels. But by the 1930's increased competition from foreign producers and rising labor costs forced many sugar plantations to increase efficiency by the mechanization of operations and worker layoffs. Many people left the Kahului area for other islands.

A few decades later, however, the tourism industry provided a boom to the area and population rebounded. By the late 1980's, construction work was underway that would allow Kahului Harbor to accommodate cruise ships, as well as fuel and cargo ships.

Today, Kahului Harbor maintains its place as a key distribution center for agricultural products and, of course, hosts cruise ships from far and wide.

Kahului Harbor Weather

If you're one of those lucky visitors to the area, know that weather can vary. Kahului itself is located on the isthmus between the West Maui Mountains and Mt. Haleakala, meaning it generally doesn't get large amounts of rain. However, it can be quite windy. And, if you plan to visit Haleakala, be aware that temperatures at the summit can fall below freezing. We advise planning your adventures ahead of time so as to pack and dress accordingly. Be sure to check out our Maui Weather page for more detailed information.

Kahului Bay

Kahului Bay

Kahului Harbor Things to Do

If shopping is on your to-do list, there is some shopping in Kahului, including a mall located just a few minutes from the ship. Many visitors chose to cross the island and visit the more tourist-centered areas of Lahaina and Kaanapali Beach and shop there, as well.

If you are looking for things to do when you arrive at Kahului Harbor, prepare to be overwhelmed (in a good way)! Your cruise ship is sure to offer a variety of excursions and tours during your stay on Maui. Visitor favorites include the Road to Hana , visiting the summit of Haleakala, Iao Valley, and Needle, humpback whale tours (December-March), hiking the Waihee Ridge Trail , and snorkeling at Molokini Crater . And trust us; that's just the tip of the iceberg. There is something for everyone on Maui.

Kahului, Hawaii

We are deeply saddened to hear about the wildfires currently impacting the town of Lahaina in Maui.  We have a very special relationship with the people and islands of Hawaii, as we sail to the beautiful state year-round.  It is a magical destination and one that is highly sought out by our guests for its natural beauty, culture and unparalleled experiences. To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org .  In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, whilst also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. As of September 3, 2023, we have recommenced our weekly overnight calls to Kahului, Maui following the guidance and encouragement of the Maui community, Hawai'i state governor Josh Green and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

Where You Dock in Maui (Kahului) – HI

Port Kahului is the island of Maui’s main seaport. The port serves both passenger and cargo ships. The cruise ship dock is located on the island’s east side and is located in an industrial zone and therefore aren’t any amenities for cruise ship passengers.

Getting Around Maui (Kahului) – HI

Most visitors find that the best way to see the sights are to go on an excursion or to rent a car.

It is a bit of a hike to walk from the cruise ship out of the industrial pier area. It is a circuitous pedestrian path out of the port, until you come to the Maui Mall. The city does not really cater to tourists. The best way to get around to tour the area and the island is by booking excursions or renting a car.

Rental Cars

The closest rental car companies to the pier are Hertz and Enterprise, but there are other local car rental companies in the area.

Roads in Maui are in great condition and most drivers are considerate. Locals do tend to drive slower, as they are on island time. You will need a valid photo drivers license and be at least 21 years of age to rent a car. A valid credit card is also required and a current auto insurance policy. Driving is on the right hand side of the road.

Most travelers find that the best way to get around Maui is by car. Depending on how much time you will have in port, or if this is a destination, you may want to rent a car. If you choose a taxi, there are plenty of options on the island, but it can be pricey to rely on them.

  • CB Taxi Maui
  • Maui Airport Cab Company

The Maui County Bus will run within and between major towns. It does not go to out-of-the-way locations. The Kahului Loop bus route will take you around town with the nearest bus stop at the Maui Mall about an 8 minute walk from the ship.

Shopping In Maui (Kahului) – HI

As with most stops in Hawaii, there are certain souvenirs you should keep an eye out for while stopping in Maui, like macadamia nuts, coffee, Hawaiian print clothing.  But for a special, unique item, look for hand-crafted items like jewelry or artwork.  Here are some shopping spots around Kahului:

Maui Mall Village

The Maui Mall is the closest shopping area to the port and contains a beauty parlor, nail salon, a drug store, TJ Maxx and clothing shops and even a Whole Foods. While you may not find artisan goods here, it’s a great spot if you forgot any essentials at home.

If you’re hungry, there are options for eating like Genki Sushi, IHOP, Pizza Hut, Siu’s Chinese Kitchen, and Subway. Finish it off with a trip to the Maui Candy Company and definitely visit Tasaka Guri-Guri .  In business for over 100 years, the frozen dessert known as guri-guri is a cross between sherbet and ice cream. The exact recipe for this dessert has been a family secret for over a century, although it is a mixture of flavored juice, guava, lemon-lime soda and condensed milk. It comes in two flavors, pineapple and strawberry.

Maui Swap Meet

If you happen to be docked in Kahului on a Saturday, a visit to the Maui Swap Meet is a must. Open from 7am to 1pm, the swap meet sets up in the parking lot of the University of Hawaii Maui College, which is basically across the harbor from where ships dock (about a 5 min. drive).

Since 1981, Maui Swap has been the biggest outdoor market on Maui. There is pretty much everything at this swap meet. You will find clothing, souvenirs, artwork and paintings, and a variety of flowers and fresh farm vegetables. Vendors will also have t-shirts, jewelry, soaps, jellies and jams and shaved ice. There is a small entrance fee to the swap meet (currently 50 cents for those over 12 years of age).

Moana Glass

With glass pieces done by Ryan Staub, Moana Glass is Kahului’s only furnace glassblowing studio and art gallery, and the gallery is located beside the port, so it’s a 2 minute walk from the ship.

Ryan has created blown glass in over 11 countries. His pieces are considered works of art, but many have a functional purpose as well. Hanging lights, glassware and illuminated pieces. You can also take a glass blowing class and make a small piece, like a drinking glass, starfish or ornament to take home.

Queen Kaahumanu Center

Home to the island’s only Macy’s, the Center also has national brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works.  There’s also a Starbucks if you collect their “Been There” mugs. There are also some local island-style shops.  Open for 50 years, the Center has a cinema and fresh, local produce and crafts. There are also several places to get something to eat or drink. Located a mile from the cruise port, it’s about a 4 minute drive.

Maui Specialty Chocolates

In business since 1990, this family-run handcrafted chocolate shop is a popular stop with tourists. The dark chocolate truffle mochi is a favorite, or try the peanut butter and milk chocolate waffles. Their gourmet chocolates also come in decorative containers or coffee mugs, making a great gift to take home. It is located a mile from the cruise port.

Dining In Maui (Kahului) – HI

Dining out can be expensive in Maui, which is why we have mentioned two food trucks below in our listing of places to eat. Hawaiian/Polynesian cuisine is readily available along with an abundance of fish and seafood on most menus.

Most restaurants offer a “plate lunch” which consists of rice, macaroni salad and meat or fish. Hawaii also has their own version of the snow cone that is shave (not shaved) ice. Ice is shaved off a large block and topped with flavored syrups or a scoop of ice cream in the middle.

Mai tais, pina coladas contain rum and fruit juices. The kiddos will enjoy “POG”, which is a blend of passion fruit, guava and orange juices.

Restaurant Matsu – 0.7 miles from pier

An unassuming, low-key eatery in Kahului, Matsu serves both Japanese and local specialties. The eatery is simple, and your meal is served on disposable plates, but reviewers say the food is very good, especially the teriyaki salmon. If you want to take it out, that is also available.

Ono Teppanyaki & Seafood – 1.4 miles from pier

Housed in a food truck, this local restaurant is in a court across from Costco. The steak and lobster are two favorites that are tender and juicy. They also have shrimp and ahi yellow tuna. Pair your selections with rice and grilled veggies. There are umbrellas and tables set up so that you can eat right there, too.

Tin Roof – 1.2 miles from pier

Traditional Hawaiian selections are served at the Tin Roof, which is also run by the members of the next generation of mom & pop shops, Top Chef finalist Chef Sheldon Simeon and his wife Janice. Born and raised in Hawaii, these owners source their ingredients from local farmers, fisherman and ranchers on Maui. They offer Mochiko chicken, pork belly, garlic shrimp, steak, garlic noodles, fat chow funn, spicy chicken sandwiches and an array of sides.

Acevedo’s Hawaicano Cafe – 0.8 miles from pier

Family owned and operated, the menu dishes reflect both their Hawaiian and Mexican backgrounds. They serve burritos, nachos, fish ceviche, pork carnitas and carne asada steak. If you are brave, try the crazy fries that are topped with beans, cheese, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, pickled jalapeno, sour cream, guacamole, and Jalapeno aioli sauce. That should keep you busy!

Geste Shrimp Truck – 1.4 miles from pier

Another food truck, which seems to be very popular in Maui, Geste Shrimp has scampi, hot and spicy and crab mac salad served with rice. Located next to the airport and across from the Costco Gas Bar, there are tables under umbrellas so that you can eat outside.

Things To Do in Maui (Kahului) – HI

Kahului is not commonly considered a tourist destination in itself, so you most likely will need to venture out of town to see the sights. There aren’t really any nice beaches near the port, so it may be best to rent a car and drove to other areas, or to get a day pass at a resort.

While many of the beaches have hotels that are on the waterfront, all beaches on Maui are public and it is required that they have public access. Remember, too, that while Hawaiian beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world, they are also among the most dangerous because of large waves and strong currents.

Hawaii has a rating system for their beaches that are designed to help you identify a beach that is appropriate to your ocean skill level. Go here to learn what they rating system is: Rating Signs & Alerts

Hawaii monitors the weather conditions at its beaches, and gives an update every 15 minutes for its lifeguarded beaches. Before you head to the water, check for current conditions here: https://hawaiibeachsafety.com/

Resort Day Pass

Enjoy the beautiful beaches of Maui with all the amenities of a luxury resort with a day pass through ResortPass. Enjoy pools, a visit to the spa, food and beverage and more. Two of the featured resorts are less than a mile from the cruise pier. Click here for more details.

Located 5.5 miles from the cruise port, and not far from the airport, Baby Beach is protected by a reef, making the water a relatively calm place for younger swimmers and beach play, but there are no lifeguards or facilities.

Baldwin Beach Park

Located 6.5 miles from the cruise terminal,  this beach is great for surfers or sunbathers since it can be pretty wavy, but there are lifeguards and other facilities at the park.

Lower Pa’ia Beach

A little further up the road from Baldwin Beach Park, this beach has washrooms and showers but no lifeguards. The rolling surf is good for those who want to body surf, but if you want to swim, there is a hidden area about 200m to the west which is a good place for swimming if the ocean is calmer.

Hookipa Beach Park

In the same direction as the other beaches, about 9.5 miles from the cruise port, Hookipa Beach is a great place if you want to see turtles. Depending on the time of day, they could be on the sand, or in the sea. The beach isn’t great for swimming, but is popular with surfers, and at high tide, the beach is very narrow. But, there are lifeguards and washroom facilities.

Maui Ocean Center

Located just over 8 miles from the cruise port, on the opposite side of the island, this aquarium has both indoor and outdoor exhibits, with a turtle lagoon, shark pool, and a hands-on tide pool. The 54-foot-long clear tunnel allows you to see stingrays, sharks and over 2,000 fish up close and personal. There is also a restaurant that serves burgers, sandwiches and salads. The gift shop has a variety of local products, crafts and souvenirs.

Haleakalā National Park

Located kind of in the middle of the eastern part of the island, about 28 miles from the cruise port, the lunar-like landscape of Haleakala Crater is a two-hour drive from sea level to the 10,023 foot summit. It is a “must-do” for many visitors to watch the sunrise from the Puu Ulaula Overlook, the volcano’s summit. If you are unable to make it there for sunrise, just know that it will still be about 30 degrees cooler at the summit and there can be heavy winds, rain or even snow.

The Road to Hana

While taking the Road to Hana isn’t advised to only do in a day, taking the trip to Hana from Kahului is only about 50 miles (closer than when you dock in Lahaina).  You can drive it yourself, but it can be stressful trying to keep your eyes on the road, plus see all the sights, so taking a tour definitely has the advantage of letting someone else do the driving.  Check out the shore excursion below that offers views by road and air.

If you’re determined to rent a car and do it yourself, read this to avoid these 5 mistakes when on the road to Hana.

"Best" is a loaded adjective. Best in what way? What are you looking for in a beach? What tradeoffs are you willing to make?

Pāʻia Secret Beach is a great little beach that is a 10 minute ride from the cruise port and it is right at Pāʻia Town for dining, shopping, etc.

Ka'anapali is way too far I think and the transportation options limited; a bus would really not work because the cross island buses don't run very often.

Wailea is probably the most commonly visited beach area from the cruise port and taxis and Uber should be readily availeable, but I would still cushion plenty of time to get back to the ship.
