Etymology

1849 (n.) "a stage of a journey by ox wagon;" 1850 (v.), "to travel or migrate by ox wagon," from Afrikaans trek , from Dutch trekken "to march, journey," originally "to draw, pull," from Middle Dutch trecken (cognate with Middle Low German trecken , Old High German trechan "to draw"). Especially in reference to the Groot Trek (1835 and after) of more than 10,000 Boers, who, discontented with the English colonial authorities, left Cape Colony and went north and north-east. In general use as a noun by 1941. Related: Trekked ; trekking .

Entries linking to trek

late 15c., "footprint, mark left by anything," from Old French trac "track of horses, trace" (mid-15c.), possibly from a Germanic source (compare Middle Low German treck , Dutch trek "drawing, pulling;" see trek ). Meaning "lines of rails for drawing trains" is from 1805. Meaning "branch of athletics involving a running track" is recorded from 1905. Meaning "single recorded item" is from 1904, originally in reference to phonograph records. Meaning "mark on skin from repeated drug injection" is first attested 1964.

Track record (1955) is a figurative use from racing, "performance history" of an individual car, runner, horse, etc. (1907, but the phrase was more common in sense "fastest speed recorded at a particular track"). To make tracks "move quickly" is American English colloquial first recorded 1835; to cover (one's) tracks in the figurative sense first attested 1898; to keep track of something is attested from 1883. American English wrong side of the tracks "bad part of town" is by 1901. Track lighting attested from 1970.

"one who treks," 1851, agent noun from trek (v.).

After decades lost, star trek ’s original enterprise model may have been found, the listing went down quickly, and roddenberry's son is trying to track it down..

Samuel Axon - Nov 7, 2023 12:25 pm UTC

  • This mysterious model appeared on eBay with little fanfare. eBay
  • The model appeared in this promotional image with Roddenberry... CBS
  • ...and in this one with William Shatner... CBS
  • ...and in this one with Leonard Nimoy, among many others. CBS

The first model of the USS Enterprise ever used in shooting the original Star Trek series may have surfaced after going missing decades ago.

Further Reading

On Thursday evening, Rod Roddenberry, son of Gene Roddenberry and steward of the Roddenberry estate, shared a message on Facebook expressing a desire to get in touch with the seller to see about the model's return. That post has since become inaccessible, but a nearly identical one appeared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday afternoon. He wrote :

Super excited someone discovered this treasure! It would mean a lot to talk with whomever is selling/in possession of the 3' Enterprise. Appreciate anyone who can put me in touch, and connect us! Engage!

Ars reached out to the Roddenberry estate but was not given a public comment. We also contacted the eBay seller who listed the model, but they declined to identify themselves or explain how they came to acquire it.

"All I can say is that it’s out of my hands and with a proper team," they wrote. They declined to elaborate further.

Even though the future fate of the model is uncertain, the username for the account and its other listings suggest that it specializes in selling artifacts found in storage lockers that end up without an owner, either due to failure to pay, abandonment, or death, perhaps giving a hint as to how the model was found.

At first, there was a lot of speculation about whether this was the genuine, long-lost model—and all evidence points to this being an authentic find.

The model mystery

Enthusiasts have done extensive research into this and other props used in the series, documenting details about them, the stories behind them, and where they have ended up over the years.

The model was made by prop-maker Richard Datin Jr under the direction of Gene Roddenberry in the preproduction phase of the series before it even had a full series order. It preceded an 11-foot model that was used for most of the shots in the series. However, the 3-footer was used for the opening credits sequence and all but one of the shots of the Enterprise in the series' pilot, because the 11-foot version was not ready in time for shooting. It was also used sporadically in other shots in later episodes, including one where it actually acted as a model of the Enterprise sitting on a table.

Star Trek: Who Is Redjac?

Posted: November 14, 2023 | Last updated: November 14, 2023

Star Trek has a few sinister alien species that have become iconic across generations. The Borg inspired countless examples of cyborg invaders conquering enemies through assimilation. The Klingons were among the first to popularize the proud warrior race trope. The Romulans have been the go-to sci-fi villain template since the 60s. But, for every long-running icon, there are a thousand weekly threats. Redjac is one of the rare Star Trek antagonists that briefly gave the show a horror edge.

Star Trek regularly features supernatural elements, but usually with a strained sci-fi justification. When the writers want a vampire , they create an alien race with fangs. When they need ghosts, they invent invisible invaders. "Wolf in the Fold" is the seventh episode of the second season of The Original Series , and it features the Star Trek franchise's take on demonic possession.

RELATED: Star Trek: What Is Dilithium?

What Is Redjac?

Redjac is a parasitic, gas-based organism that can possess living beings. It goes by many names, including Red Jack, Beratis, Kesla, and Jack the Ripper. Jack is a gaseous cloud who feeds on fear and pain. It's never clarified whether it consumes the metaphysical emotions or the reaction's resulting chemicals. Redjac is harmless in its native form, but it can invade the psyche of any living being and compel them to kill. It can also take command of inert objects. Most details of Redjac's origin are left blank. The show never explains where it came from, but the novelization of the script implies it was born in Hell. On its endless quest to cause suffering, Redjac has killed:

  • The five or more women attributed to Jack the Ripper
  • Seven women in Shanghai
  • Five women outside of Kiev
  • Eight women in the Martian colonies
  • Ten women in Heliopolis on Alpha Eridani II
  • Some women on Deneb II
  • More women on Rigel IV
  • Even more women on Argelius II

The lowest possible death toll would be in the low forties, but Redjac is unquestionably beyond that. In a licensed comic by Christopher Golden & Tom Sniegoski, Redjac sparks a nuclear war on an unnamed planet. It could be responsible for the deaths of millions. Redjac only appeared in one episode of the original series, "Wolf in the Fold."

What Happens in "Wolf in the Fold?"

"Wolf in the Field" begins after an unnamed lady on the Enterprise injures Montgomery Scott . Scotty hates women, so Doctor McCoy prescribes him a vacation on Argelius II, a planet with a sexually permissive culture. Everything on Argelius II is unsubtly based on Middle-Eastern aesthetics. Scotty, McCoy, and Kirk watch a belly dancer who takes a liking to Scotty. They walk out together, but McCoy and Kirk hear a scream. They discover the woman brutally stabbed to death and Scotty unconscious, holding the knife. Hengist, the local city administrator, wants Scotty jailed. The Enterprise sends down a medical expert, and Scotty stabs her, too . Hengist's wife conducts a séance and experiences a terrible evil. The candles go out, and Scotty strikes again.

Captain's log, stardate 3614.9. Planet Argelius II. While on therapeutic shore leave, Mr. Scott has fallen under suspicion of having brutally murdered an Argelian woman. The chief city administrator, a Mr. Hengist, has taken charge of the investigation, but has learned little of value.

The Enterprise crew rigs a computer lie detector test and takes Scott's testimony. He speaks of an evil presence, and the machine confirms his statements. Kirk asks questions about the many names Hengist's wife said during the séance. Each is tied to a killing spree on a faraway planet . One alias, "Beratis," committed murders on Hengist's home planet, casting suspicion on him. When Hengist tries to run, Kirk knocks him out, and Redjac infects the computer. From there, the nightmarish being can control the Enterprise.

What Is Redjac's Fate?

Kirk realizes Redjac feeds on fear, so he has McCoy administer a sedative to the rest of the crew. Spock slows down the computer by commanding it to calculate pi to its final decimal. Redjac tries to leap bodies, but it ends up in Hengist again. McCoy tranquilizes Hengist, and Kirk carries him to the Transporter Room. They beam him and the being possessing him into space at "maximum dispersion," leaving them scattered across the void in countless pieces. Spock believes he'll starve. The Enterprise Crew resumes their shore leave on Argelius II.

In the grand scheme of science fiction villainy, many threats blow up planets or reduce species to dust. From that perspective, a gas-based being stabbing a few dozen people to death seems unimpressive. However, a possibly demonic invader that feeds on fear and commits every murder with someone else's hands remains terrifying. Redjac was an excellent one-off villain for the Star Trek universe, and the extra details only make it more horrific.

Here’s how Tesla cleverly re-launched its Cyberquad for Kids by skirting ATV laws

Avatar for Micah Toll

Despite Tesla’s long-awaited Cyberquad electric ATV likely still having a long wait ahead of us, it’s actually been two years since the company rolled out a smaller version designed for young riders. But after a Consumer Product Safety Commission recall put the kibosh on the original version, Tesla has returned with an updated model that managed to avoid the same laws that quashed the original.

The Cyberquad for Kids may look like a Tesla, but it was in fact created from a partnership between Tesla Design Studio and the popular children’s toy maker Radio Flyer.

The original model proved incredibly popular, selling out within minutes . With supply low and demand skyrocketing, the conditions were ripe for scalping. Online auction sites like eBay were full of units selling for thousands of dollars over the original $1,900 price tag.

However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) eventually took notice of the commotion. The CPSC ultimately decided that the Cyberquad for Kids wasn’t a kid’s ride-on toy as it was being marketed, but rather a youth ATV. And based on their rules, they were right.

According to section 42(e)(1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA) an ATV is defined as “any motorized, off-highway vehicle designed to travel on 3 or 4 wheels, having a seat designed to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control.”  So it may look like a toy, but it fit the definition for a youth ATV.

cyberquad for kids

The CPSC takes ATV regulations quite seriously due to the higher risk of injury they have historically posed. As ATVs gained popularity in the US during the 1970s and 80s, statistics tracking injuries and deaths skyrocketed. Many are familiar with the infamous US ban on 3-wheeled ATVs imposed in the late 1980s, but there is also a long list of regulations imposed on 4-wheeled ATVs as well.

To be fair, the simple design and 10 mph performance of the Cyberquad for Kids put it much closer to the kind of ride-on toys you’d find at box stores than to actual youth ATVs designed for thrill-riding or off-road shenanigans. But as they say, “rules are rules,” and the product still fit within the CPSC’s definition of a youth ATV.

As such, the CPSC put its foot down in late 2022, forcing a total recall of the Cyberquad for Kids sold in the US.

Now Tesla and Radio Flyer have returned with a new version of the Cyberquad for Kids that has just re-opened sales in the US with deliveries set to begin later this month.

As Radio Flyer’s CEO explained, “Our award-winning product development team has worked closely with the Tesla Design Studio to update this popular product so we could bring it back stronger than ever.”

trek original definition

Tesla detailed a number of those updates on the product page , explaining that the Cyberquad for Kids has now been certified as a true ride-on toy, and is no longer considered a youth ATV.

According to Tesla:

The new Model 915 Cyberquad for Kids is a certified electric ride-on toy under ASTM F963 and meets U.S. Consumer Product Safety Standards for ride-on toys. Not approved or intended for use as a youth ATV.

CPSC Modifications to Model 915 from Model 914:

  • Age Range: 9-12 years
  • Tire pressure warning label added: Equipped with new ANSI Z535-formatted warning decal instructing owners to maintain a tire pressure of 20-30 psi
  • Product warning label revised: Equipped with a new ANSI Z535-formatted warning decal defining intended use as a youth ride-on toy only
  • Seat support spring removed

trek original definition

The three main changes include two warning labels and the removal of a “seat support spring”, which likely refers to the rear suspension.

The original design included a solid rear axle mounted on a rear swingarm, offering single-pivot suspension commonly found on simple youth ATVs. Removing that suspension likely helps make the case for the little quad being closer in design to ride-on toys than actual youth ATVs.

To be fair, the original suspension wasn’t much. Even with its simple design though, it still functioned decently. I’m within spitting distance of the 150 lb (68 kg) weight limit, and so I had a chance to review the Cyberquad for Kids last year (check out the video below). I found that the suspension did in fact help improve the ride on rough terrain, though most kids (or kids-at-heart like me) are more likely to ride the quad around grassy lawns and smooth sidewalks – not rough off-road trails.

Without that suspension, the product will still likely be a fun ride but certainly won’t feel as comfortable as the original.

We’ll all just have to keep waiting for the full-sized Cyberquad if we want to see Tesla truly enter the ATV market for real this time.

Oh, and just for a fun laugh, it looks like the Cyberquad for Kids has proven to be so popular that companies are already knocking it off with cheap imitations.

I was at the Milan Motorcycle Show last week and thought I had stumbled upon a booth for the Asian factory that produces the actual device. But as I got closer, I realized it wasn’t a real Cyberquad for Kids, but rather a cheap knock-off.

It definitely didn’t have the same pizazz, and I’m guessing it didn’t have the same performance either.

For reference, see me riding the original Cyberquad for Kids up a steep ramp into the back of my electric mini-truck below.

In fact, I’ve since rigged up my own Cyberquad for Kids with a tow hitch, and we now use it on my family’s ranch for real work. It tows a fertilizer spreader and a sprayer trailer behind it for use in the fields. Hmm, perhaps that should be my next Weekend Project article…

Broadway began its trek into the lucrative holiday season last week at a steady clip, with the 28 shows grossing a total of $29,163,440 for the week ending November 12. That’s up about 10% over the previous week, though down about the same percentage from last year at this time.

The better news is that the majority of shows currently on the boards are doing pretty good business, with only six of the 28 shows pulling in audiences of less than 90% capacity ( A Beautiful Noise, Chicago, Melissa Etheridge: My Window, Purlie Victorious, Some Like It Hot and The Shark is Broken ).

Twelve of the 28 shows grossed more than $1 million for the week: & Juliet ($1,107,122); Aladdin ($1,188,415); Back to the Future ($1,299,452); Gutenberg! The Musical ($1,031,617); Hamilton ($1,941,374); Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ($1,241,808); Merrily We Roll Along ($1,865,831); MJ ($1,556,037); Moulin Rouge! ($1,269,624); Sweeney Todd ($1,770,126); The Lion King ($1,990,894); and Wicked ($1,864,500). Six was almost there with $999,517.

The Merrily We Roll Along take of $1,865,831 was another house record at the Hudson Theatre, with the musical starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez also topping the roster in average ticket price: $241.44 (average ticket price for all 28 shows was $123.69).

Two shows were in previews last week: Harmony , which opened last night, filled about 92% of seats at the Barrymore, grossing $643,894; and Spamalot , which was at 91% capacity for seven previews at the St. James, grossing $753,230. Figures for both of those shows were no doubt impacted by heavily comped press performances. Spamalot opens November 16.

Season to date, Broadway has grossed $708,085,316, with total attendance at 5,808,985.
