Australia traveller's guide
Just a hop over the road and you're in sunny Australia. While their pavlova, lamington and rugby team isn't quite as good as ours, their sunburnt country is definitely worth seeing.
New Zealand citizens do not need to apply for a visa before coming to Australia for a holiday. If you are interested in also working temporarily in Australia, you may be eligible for a SCV (Special Category Visa), which allows you to enter, stay and work. To receive one of these on arrival, you require a valid New Zealand passport and a complete Incoming Passenger Card. To be eligible, you must never have been asked to leave Australia or deported from another country, and you may be refused entry if you have been imprisoned for more than a year.
Best time to visit
Avoiding the Australian school holidays not only limits the crowds, but also limits the prices! Heading south in winter is only recommended for those who like freezing seas and icy snowfields, while heading north in the summer is only recommended for those who plan to be warm and wet - the rain and humidity will make sure of that.
Need to know tips
Australia is home to some deadly animals - but it is their home. So if you're going swimming at the beach or in a waterhole, be aware of signs and warnings about sharks, jellyfish and crocodiles, and if swimming is banned there, head somewhere else. Places to swim are not hard to find in Australia.
Unless you're planning to stay for six months, you're not going to see much of this big country - it's bigger than the entire European Union combined - so it's best to stay in one state and see everything you can. It's not uncommon to drive for six hours in Australia and have barely moved on the map. So if you're going exploring by four wheels or on foot, make sure you pack plenty of water and fuel to get you back home again.
Slip slop slap wrap - this common childhood refrain from the 80s and 90s was also popular in Australia. In modern Australia, there's a few extra steps now. So it's slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible, slop on some SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmd hat, seek out shade, and slide on some sunglasses.
As a very multicultural nation, there is an abundance of exciting foods to try, but be aware that it's not going to be cheap. Cook for yourself when you can - there are public BBQs in most parks which are definitely worth using in summer.
Alcohol is taxed much higher in Australia compared to New Zealand, so you may wish to have a bevvie or two at home before you head out for a night on the town.
Getting around
Australia is big - it's about 30 times the size of New Zealand. So depending on where you're headed and how long you're there for, transport is an important budget consideration. Flying is the quickest and easiest way to get from the major and regional cities, but it can also be very expensive - especially if you're flying during popular holiday times.
God bless America, God Save the Queen, God defend New Zealand and thank Christ for Australia. - Russell Crowe, Actor
What to eat
There's not a lot in Australia that you can't get in New Zealand. For example, a popular delicacy across Australia's big brown land is the Bunnings sausage sizzle. You also can't go past fish and chips at a bronzed Aussie beach.
While Indigenous Australian cuisine is unknown to most Australians, there are many opportunities to engage in cultural heritage going back more than 60,000 years - both with guides, and in your grocery store.
Head to the supermarket or butcher and grab some chilled kangaroo fillets. Don't expect to treat them like beef or lamb - these animals have very low body fat, and five minutes on a grill will make it turn to rubber. Instead, look at marinating and cooking inside a slow or pressure cooker.
For new seasoning flavours, consider wattle seed's nutty flavour, or the popular lemon myrtle. The latter is particularly good for wrapping fish as it cooks.
If you're looking for the full bush tucker experience, investigate local Indigenous guides who can tell the poisonous from the palatable - *many Australian plants are the former* - and help you find unique animal delicacies like honey ants and witchetty grubs.
Where to go
With tiny country towns, sprawling cities, and endless outback and open waters, Australia offers New Zealand travellers a sensation range of places to see.
Australian Capital Territory: Australia's bush capital is a great place to travel, as it has less residents and tourists than Sydney and Melbourne. Take a tour of Parliament House, visiting science museum Questacon, the National Art Gallery, or the Mt Stromlo Observatory.
Victoria: if you're thinking of renting a car , the Great Ocean Road is a spectacular coastal drive. You can visit famed rock formation, the 12 Apostles (only seven remain after years of erosion from the elements), check out surfing hotspot Bells Beach, or go spot a koala at Kenneth River. Otherwise, why not head to Melbourne, for theatre, art, and some of the country's best coffee.
South Australia: make your first stop Kangaroo Island, with its powder white beaches, delicious local produce, and an abundance of incredible wildlife.
Western Australia: do you love your wine as much as we do? Check out Margaret River, a three-hour drive from capital city Perth. Known as one of Australia and the world's best wine regions, Margaret River has over 150 wineries, along with award-winning casual and fine dining restaurants and micro-breweries.
Northern Territory: Visit the desert heart of Australia for red soil and blue skies in every direction. Breathtaking indigenous sites, Uluru and Kata Tjuta are must-sees (especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon to watch them change colour). Do the right thing by the locals, and resist any inclination to climb Uluru - there is a ban from October 2019 anyway.
Queensland: The Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, or the glorious beaches of the Whitsunday Islands - there is no shortage of incredible natural landscapes to explore up north. Or if bugs and fish aren't thrilling enough for you, hit up the Gold Coast to visit the theme parks.
New South Wales: Biggest city Sydney has iconic attractions the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, popular beaches Bondi, Coogee and Marboura, and fantastic cultural spots like the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Sydney Theatre Company. Or head out of the city to the wonderful hikes of the Blue Mountains or the south coast's seaside hideaways.
Planning on heading elsewhere on your trip? Whether you're saying 'Hey!' to the USA , or you're chilling in C hina , TINZ has you covered.

AUSTRALIA TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQS
Travelling often means stepping out of your comfort zone, even in a country as neighbourly as Australia. Flight delays, missed connections and lost luggage can thump your trip harder than a boxing kangaroo! Make sure you're covered for a range of travel disasters regardless of destination.
Q. Do I need medical cover while I’m in Australia?
New Zealand and Australia share reciprocal healthcare agreements meaning you will have access to government medical facilities and care while travelling in Australia. Whilst you may be eligible for reciprocal health care in Australia, this would not cover any ambulance fees, additional accommodation costs, flights for family members or medical repatriation to New Zealand. TINZ can help to cover these costs should the worst-case scenario occur.
Q. Do you cover scuba diving in the barrier reef?
Absolutely. We agree that scuba diving is a great way to explore the deep blue sea. You're only covered if you hold an open water diving license or you are diving under licensed instruction. If you are a qualified scuba diver you are covered for accompanied dives with a maximum depth of 30 metres. If you are unqualified you are covered for a maximum depth of 30 metres with an instructor.
Q. Am I covered for all water sports downunder?
Yes. At TINZ we cater for those who enjoy getting wet. We cover a wide range of waters sports such as surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, water skiing & wakeboarding, stand up paddle boarding, jet skiing and more. Please refer to our Sports & Activities Cover for a full list of covered activities . This outlines activities requiring an additional premium and activities automatically covered for free.
q. Which activities are excluded?
We don’t cover outdoor rock climbing, hang-gliding, boating in international waters or any kind of professional or competition sports. For a full list of excluded activities please refer to Policy Document .
Q. How do alcohol and drugs affect my cover?
When it comes to alcohol we understand that for some, there’s no better way to kick off a holiday than with a poolside cocktail (or two). However, we would exclude any claims involving drugs/or alcohol. Please note this exclusion is only applicable if it was your intoxication that resulted in the claim. Refer to our Policy Document to see a full list of exclusions.
Q. Would my camera, laptop, engagement ring be covered?
It depends. We will pay up to $1,000 for standard individual single items and $3,000 for personal computers, video recorders or cameras. If you have an item that exceeds either of these costs you can insure it separately up to an additional $5,000. You are only able to cover an item of jewellery for up to $1,000. For more information on insuring specific items during your travels, please refer to our high value items page.
Q. Are kids covered for free?
All of TINZ's travel insurance policies cover kids at no additional cost. Your child is eligible if they are financially dependent, under nineteen (19) years, travelling together with a parent or grandparent for 100% of the holiday, and are named on the Certificate of Insurance.

Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions
Does travel insurance cover coronavirus(covid-19).
It depends! Unfortunately, the answer isn't a straightforward one. There are some situations where cover is available, and others where it is an exclusion. It largely depends on which insurer you bought your policy with ; when you bought it; where you're travelling to; when you're travelling; and, the reason for your claim. One thing that is for certain - you're unlikely to be covered for claims relating to the coronavirus for future travel if you haven't yet purchased a travel insurance policy as this is a known event.
Which is the best travel insurance in New Zealand?
The best travel insurance for you depends entirely on your planned trip and your circumstances. If you're a backpacker on a tight budget, you might want a no-frills medical-only policy. Whereas, if you're heading on a once in a lifetime cruise, have outlaid a lot of money in upfront deposits or if you have health conditions, a comprehensive policy might be best for you. While there's no single best travel insurance that's right for everyone, finding a policy that works for you is easy when you use our quote comparison to start comparing prices and features. With Compare Travel Insurance, you can also read up on travel insurance reviews from customers to learn about their customer service and importantly, claims experience.
Is it too late to buy cover?
It's better late than never. We recommend buying a policy as soon as you've booked and started paying deposits for flights, accommodation and tours, but you can buy travel insurance at any point. Even if you forgot and are already overseas . Exclusions may apply though, so be sure to check the PDS and eligibility criteria before you buy.
Can I get cover for my medical conditions?
Cover is available for most medical conditions. Whether or not you need to declare your conditions and whether an additional charge will apply depends on the condition, its stability, current treatment, the recency of the diagnosis and your age. Minor conditions such as allergies, cataracts, and certain diabetes are often covered free of charge. However other medical conditions such as arthritis, any kind of cancer, heart conditions and hip & knee replacements require medical screenings and additional charges are likelt to apply. Today, most insurers use online medical screening software which makes it easy to declare your conditions and get covered in minutes. Although finding cover for terminal illnesses in New Zealand is difficult. Learn more about covering your conditions with our guide on declaring your medical conditions .
Can I purchase travel insurance at the airport?
Yes, you can. Generally speaking, you can purchase travel insurance up to a year before your trip, right up to boarding at the airport. With comprehensive travel insurance, you are covered for cancellation benefits from the moment you buy your policy, so we recommend buying it as soon as you start paying for flights, tours and accommodation.
Can I get travel insurance if I'm already overseas?
You can buy cover if you are already overseas, although each travel insurer has different rules on age limits and waiting periods. Check out our already overseas travel insurance guide to learn more.
Does travel insurance cover pregnancy?
You can buy travel insurance to cover you when you're pregnant, but different brands will have different rules around how many weeks gestation they will provide cover up until. Terms may also vary on whether you've had complications, have a multiple pregnancy, conceived via IVF and whether you're looking for cover in case of emergency birth. Check out the handy table in our pregnancy guide for more information.
Do I need cover in New Zealand?
Unexpected events can happen anywhere. It is just as important to have domestic cover when travelling around New Zealand as it is when travelling overseas. If you're a New Zealand resident, a domestic policy covers you for cancellations, luggage cover and often rental vehicle excess. Medical coverage is not included, but you'll be eligible for publicly funded health care services. For non-residents visiting New Zealand, discover International visitors to New Zealand are currently not required to have travel insurance by law, but it is highly recommended to protect you from eye-watering medical bills and more.
Which is the cheapest policy?
The cost of travel insurance depends on a range of factors including your destination, duration of travel, age of travellers, planned activities, whether or not you have any medical conditions and the type of cover you choose (medical only, mid-range or comprehensive). The cheapest travel insurance is generally to less risky parts of the world - places with cheaper healthcare and less risk of injury, illness or theft - and policies which offer less coverage - so ones without benefits for adventure activities or pre-existing conditions. To get cheap travel insurance from New Zealand for your upcoming trip, create a quote and compare prices, but remember that the cheapest isn't always the best. You should consider your trip and what you require cover for.
Why should I buy travel insurance direct online?
Comparing prices and features online makes it easier to find the policy that's right for you and your circumstances. With comparetravelinsurance.co.nz , the price you see is the same price direct from the insurer. Sometimes you're not after the best policy but rather the best bang for your buck and comparing prices and features online can save you time, worry and loads of money.

Why Buy Travel Insurance?
We’re not silly, we know that plenty of New Zealanders go on holiday and have an amazing time exploring new and exciting places without buying travel insurance. But taking a gamble on your much needed break can be risky. Here’s why!
Exxy Medical Costs
If you buy a policy for just one reason this is it! Falling ill or being injured while travelling overseas can be extremely costly. Hospital costs in the USA can reach up to $10,000 per day, while emergency transport home for treatment can easily exceed $100,000! Ouch!
Disasters Can Strike
The excitement of getting on that plane has you knotted up like a pretzel. Picture your dismay if you had to cancel last minute. Worse still, imagine you’re mid-martini when bad news breaks. For your peace of mind

Because You Have To

What is travel insurance and why do you need it when you travel?
What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance is financial cover for emergencies, accidents or loss that might occur to you or your belongings while you are travelling either domestically or internationally.
Why do you need travel insurance?
The New Zealand government website SafeTravel recommends travel insurance for anyone taking a trip away from home, especially overseas.
If you don’t have travel insurance and you lose your luggage, have an accident, medical emergency, or legal incident, you could face huge bills.
Cancelled flights and hotel accommodation can leave you out of pocket by thousands of dollars, but medical expenses can be even worse. A health emergency overseas can end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
However, if you have travel insurance, you can travel confidently knowing you can get financial help in an emergency.
What else should you do before you travel?
In addition to organising travel insurance, before you leave:
- If you are going overseas, visit the SafeTravel website’s Travel Advisories page to ascertain the current risks of travelling to your chosen destination. If a country is flagged with a “Do Not Travel” advisory, be aware that you may not be able to obtain insurance for the trip.
- Regardless of where you are going, register your plans with SafeTravel. Your details will be stored securely and only used to reach you in an emergency.
- Ensure you have all the relevant travel documentation to take with you on your trip, and that a trusted friend or relation in NZ has a copy, too.
- Record the contact details of the New Zealand Embassy in your country of destination – just in case you need it.
Types of travel insurance and what they cover
There are two types of travel insurance cover policies.
1. Domestic travel insurance
Domestic travel insurance policies usually cover you for events such as:
- Lost or stolen luggage or other items
- Cancelling your trip unexpectedly due to illness, accident, holiday leave being revoked, or a natural disaster at home or at your intended destination
- Rental vehicle excess you have to pay if you have an accident driving a hire car
- Legal liability: the vast majority of policies researched include coverage for legal liability. Don’t take this as an excuse to break the law, though – you may end up invalidating your policy!
Domestic travel insurance usually doesn’t cover you for:
- Medical cover. However, this is not a big problem because, as long as you’re in New Zealand, you can still access publicly funded health services or your private health insurance , if you have it
- Certain “hazardous pursuits”. If you’re doing dangerous activities on your holiday, such as skiing, scuba diving, bungee jumping or rock climbing, you need to disclose it on your application. However, even if you disclose it, you still might not be covered for an accident that happens because of that activity, as it may be excluded from the policy. Ensure you read your policy terms and conditions carefully
2. International travel insurance
International travel insurance policies usually cover you for events such as:
- Medical or dental emergency. Typical emergency medical cover will include hospital admission, emergency care and medical evacuation to another country’s hospital. If your medical situation is not an emergency, it is recommend you contact your insurer before you receive treatment, to check if it’s covered by your policy
- Repatriation if you fall sick overseas and need to be evacuated back to NZ for treatment. Or if tragedy strikes, repatriation covers the cost of flying your body and belongings back home to NZ. Some travel insurance policies also include a separate sum for funeral expenses
- Lost or stolen luggage, passport or other items. Replacing luggage and travel documents is the most common claim for travel insurance
- Legal liability if you break a local law and need a lawyer and/or interpreter. Ignorance of local law is no excuse in most countries, so make sure you check SafeTravel before you depart. For example, in some Muslim countries it is an offence to wear a bikini on a public beach. If you break a law on purpose, your travel insurance policy may not cover your legal fees
International travel insurance usually doesn’t cover you for:
- High-risk countries. Check the government’s SafeTravel website for the travel advisory status of your destination. Countries flagged with a “Do Not Travel” advisory may not be covered under your policy
- Risky behavior. Any injury or loss caused by you behaving recklessly while you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be excluded from cover. This doesn’t apply to medication prescribed to you by a doctor and taken as prescribed
- Pre-existing medical conditions. If you have experienced symptoms of a condition before travelling, even if the condition wasn’t diagnosed, medical expenses for it will generally not be covered. Read your policy’s terms and conditions carefully
- High-value items. Many policies have a dollar limit that you can claim for each item, which may not be as much as it costs to replace the item
- Notification period. Your policy may specify that you need to notify your insurer of an accident or event within a specified timeframe, such as 24 hours. It’s important to be aware of that notification period and to call your insurer as soon as you can, in the event of a potential claim
- Loss of items left unattended. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times. You might not be covered if you leave your wallet and keys wrapped in a towel on the beach, or hidden in a shared room, or even in your checked-in luggage
- Hazardous pursuits. Dangerous activities such as scuba diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing, off-piste skiing and hang-gliding are usually excluded, but they can often be added to your policy for an extra fee. Also be aware that riding a moped or motorcycle overseas might also not be covered, even if you are legally entitled to ride one in NZ
NB: No travel insurance policy will cover you for every single thing that might go wrong while you’re away, so it’s important to read your policy’s terms and conditions carefully to discover the full extent of your cover.
Travel insurance glossary of terms
- Accident : An unexpected, unforeseeable, or unusual event that was unintended and caused loss or harm while you are on a trip covered by your policy.
- Accommodation : Any type of dwelling or lodging that you pay a fee to stay in overnight.
- Additional expenses : Additional expenses for accommodation and transportation that occur because of events such as illness, natural disasters, loss of travel documents, and transport union strikes.
- Beneficiary : The person who would receive compensation from your insurance policy if you were to pass away during your travels.
- Benefits: What your insurance provider gives you according to the terms of your policy. Benefits can apply if you make a claim or they can apply if a certain event happens, e.g. during an emergency.
- Cancellation or amendment costs : The cost of cancelling, changing, or rearranging your journey because of unforeseen circumstances outside your control such as illness, accidents and extreme weather events.
- Claim: A request for your insurance provider to pay certain expenses back to you in accordance with your policy.
- Cover or coverage : The extent of protection given to you by your policy. If you are covered for an event, it means that you can claim back from your insurance provider a specified amount of expenses you incurred during that event.
- Current market value : The amount of money you could get for an item if you sold it in the current local market. This amount is based on the original cost, the current condition and age of the item, and what it could be sold for in its present state.
- Damage: Harm or injury to a person or property, resulting in the property losing value or not being able to be used properly.
- Disability : A physical or mental condition that restricts a person’s movements, senses or activities. A disadvantage or handicap, especially one imposed or recognised by the law.
- Emergency medical care : Medical care that is needed in an unexpected emergency. This does not include any type of regular medical care or foreseeable medical needs.
- Endorsement: Any special condition listed on your insurance policy as an extra reason for you to buy the policy.
- Excess: The excess is an amount that you pay instead of the insurer, e.g. “the first” $250 or $500 of a claim. Insurers usually have either a policy with different excess options that you choose between, or separate policies that each have a different excess amount. You can pay a lower premium if you have a higher excess, but you need to be sure that you could afford to pay the excess unexpectedly if you had to make a claim.
- Exclusions : Anything that is not covered by your policy. Common exclusions include travel to high-risk countries, dangerous activities such as bungee jumping, risky behaviour, such as taking alcohol or drugs, pre-existing medical conditions, and loss of items left unattended.
- Home: Your usual place of residence in New Zealand.
- Incidental: Costs associated with an unexpected covered event, which are not directly related to the event.
- Inclusions: Any event, item or expense that is covered by your policy.
- Injury: Anything that physically harms you and occurs by accidental or violent means, which is covered by your policy.
- Journey: One of the terms insurers use to talk about the period you’re covered for, from the time you leave home until the time you return to your home. Also known as your trip, voyage, or travels.
- Limit/benefit limit: Policies have a limit on the amount of benefits you can claim per year or per journey.
- Luggage and personal effects: Personal items that you own or carry with you on a trip that is covered. This includes but is not limited to: suitcase or backpack, clothing, jewellery, computer or laptop, your phone and other portable electrical devices or equipment.
- Medically necessary: Medical treatment that is needed to preserve your health, is suitable to treat your symptoms, and can be safely provided in your current location. This does not include treatment or procedures that are performed in your current location because it is merely convenient.
- Natural disaster: An event caused by nature and not by any human activity, including earthquakes, storms, bushfires and floods.
- Overseas medical expenses: Expenses incurred overseas for ambulance transport, hospital admission, surgical nursing, and emergency dental treatment.
- Period of cover: The time your travel is covered by your policy.
- Personal liability cover: Cover for costs incurred for which you are legally liable. You are legally liable if your negligence causes loss or damage to someone else’s property. Personal liability also covers you for injury to a person who is not a member of your family or travelling party. Personal liability cover does not cover damage you caused deliberately or that breaks the law; damage caused by your business or your employee; your ownership or use of a vehicle, aircraft or watercraft; or you passing on an illness to someone else.
- Policy: The travel insurance contract you have taken out with an insurance provider.
- Pre-existing condition: A medical condition that existed in any form before you signed up for the insurance policy, whether or not you had your symptoms examined by a health practitioner. Your policy may usually list a time limit for the condition to be pre-existing, e.g. you have seen a medical practitioner in the past 90 days before you started your journey, or you have been prescribed a medication within the past 60 days.
- Premium: The amount you pay your insurance provider for your travel insurance cover. Your premium must be paid on time for your travel to be covered.
- Reasonable: When associated with an expense or cost, “reasonable” refers to what is usual, needed, and matches the standards of your previously scheduled travel.
- Refund: Cash or company credit that can be given to you as reimbursement for your expenses, according to the terms of your policy.
- Rental car insurance excess : The excess charged if your hire car is damaged or stolen.
- Resumption of journey benefit : The benefit you receive if you claim the expense of resuming your travels. You can make a claim if you had to return to New Zealand suddenly due to a serious injury, illness, or the death of one of your relatives or business partners in New Zealand.
- Sudden illness or serious injury : Illness or injury that occurs during your period of cover and requires immediate treatment by a health practitioner.
- Travel delay : Scheduled transport that is delayed by over six hours. Scheduled transport can include plane flights, trains, trams, buses, ferries or cruises.
- Unforeseen: Any circumstance that is out of your control. This can include illness, accident, cancelled flights, or natural disasters.

New zealand travel insurance, do i need travel insurance for new zealand, what does travel insurance for new zealand cover, best travel insurance for new zealand, frequently asked questions (faqs).
New Zealand has long been a popular holiday destination for Australians, owing to its proximity across the ditch and its catalogue of tourism hot-spots. In fact, each year (prior to the pandemic), there were about 1.6 million Aussies travelling to New Zealand, whether for the snow or summer scenery, or to simply visit friends or family who live there.
Until recently, NZ was the most popular overseas destination for Aussies. In 2024, however, that title went to Indonesia, with 1.37 million flying to Bali and surrounds in the past year, while 1.26 million headed to New Zealand. When heading across the Tasman, 43% of Australians went for a holiday and 38% to visit friends or relatives.
And while travel costs are front of mind for many, there is one thing you should never skimp on when it comes to holidays: travel insurance. It may be tempting to forego travel insurance when heading to a place as peaceful and laid-back as New Zealand, or if you’re simply paying family a visit, but as our guide outlines, it’s still vital.

In-app travel safety alerts to keep you safe
To take out a travel insurance policy for New Zealand, you may be able to select one that covers solely New Zealand specifically, one that covers Oceania, or a worldwide policy (that often excludes the US and Mexico due to healthcare costs).
There are also different types of policies when travelling to New Zealand, which will depend on the duration of your trip and whether you are visiting additional destinations.
These include:
- Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months.
- Annual multi-trip: for more than one trip in the space of 12 months.
- Long-stay/backpacker: for an extended stay of 60 or 90 days or 12 or 18 months, and occasionally 24 months, depending on the provider.
Additionally, an annual multi-trip policy can work out more cost-effective than purchasing multiple single trip policies, but not always, so it can help to compare both types of policy.
Remember to check if a policy will only cover trips to New Zealand and Australia or worldwide destinations excluding the US and surrounding countries.
While travel insurance for New Zealand isn’t compulsory, it’s highly recommended. Good travel insurance will cover expenses should the policyholder need to cancel their trip due to an emergency, such as illness or bereavement. It will also pay out for damaged, lost or stolen baggage, as well as other items.
The total amount of baggage cover should reflect the value of all the belongings the policyholders are taking with them. There’s also usually a single item limit which dictates how much the policyholder can claim per item.
Another key component of travel insurance is medical cover. According to Services Australia, the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) we have with New Zealand may cover some of your medical costs in the New Zealand public health system. However, certain emergencies may not be covered, especially if you are taking part in activities which are excluded from your insurance policy.
The New Zealand site also explains that while Australians are eligible for medical treatment in New Zealand, this does not preclude the need for insurance. For example, visitors may also be left at a loss if they need repatriation to Australia, however, travel insurance for New Zealand can cover this.
“As neither reciprocal agreement provides full coverage, travellers should hold comprehensive travel insurance, including health insurance,” the site notes.
In addition to coverage for medical and lost luggage, most policies for New Zealand cover travel delay and missed departures.
For those planning to take advantage of the country’s vast number of adventure sports and activities, it is worth checking which are covered by a policy. As New Zealand is a popular snow destination, you will need to ensure that your policy covers snow sports if you wish to take part in these activities.
Often a policy covers around a hundred low-risk sports as standard. These include cricket, football and rugby. However, cover for bungee jumping (also popular in New Zealand) scuba diving and kite surfing among other higher risk activities, are likely to require an extra premium payment–just as snow activities would. In many cases, this is bundled as an ‘activity pack’ when selecting your cover.
In any case, insurers usually only accept claims where the appropriate safety gear was worn, such as a helmet or harness. For activities such as scuba diving, policyholders will likely need to dive with a qualified instructor and follow official guidelines for any claims to be accepted.
What Does Travel Insurance Exclude?
Specific limitations and exclusions on cover differ between policies, but there are some common exclusions to bear in mind.
Most insurers will not accept ‘disinclination to travel’ (simply not wanting to travel) as a valid reason for a claim.
As stated previously, claims are often void if you have not followed the appropriate safety guidance and official guidelines for activities you participate in, even if the activities are covered.
Also, any claims arising from intoxication from drink or drugs, or disorderly behaviour, are likely to be rejected.
The best travel insurance for New Zealand will depend on your needs, such as whether you are taking part in snow sports or other adventure activities.
An easy way to compare travel insurance policies is to use an online comparison tool, or read through our pick of the leading travel insurance policies for Australians. What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance is designed to cover you for a range of unexpected events that could happen when you’re travelling overseas or in Australia. Allianz Travel Insurance can cover costs like travel delays or emergency medical treatment, or the cost of replacing items that were lost or stolen during your trip. 1
We have Basic, Comprehensive, Domestic, and Multi-Trip Plans to choose from, with varying levels of cover to help you when you need it most. Our plans are available for singles, duos or families. Read through our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for detailed information about our plans to see which level of cover is right for you.

Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.
If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.
We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.
Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.
Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.
Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.
The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.
The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.
If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.
It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:
- You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
- You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
- Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.
Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.
You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.
When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.
Allianz Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance plans – Basic , Comprehensive , Domestic , Non-Medical or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance . You can see more detailed information on our Compare Cover Options page .

An adventurous couple’s NZ holiday came to an abrupt halt after their kayak capsized; in attempting to recover the kayak, one of the travellers cut their foot badly. They reached out to our Emergency Assistance team for help, who arranged for the couple to be evacuated the next morning so the customer could be properly treated by a leading doctor. The couple had to ultimately cancel their plans to hike a glorious part of New Zealand’s North Island, but, fortunately the couple, their evacuation and cancellation claim over $1,000 was covered by us.

One unlucky Australian traveller fell while snowboarding on the slopes of NZ’s The Remarkables, hurting their arm as a result. The avid snowboarder quickly realised something was extremely wrong with their wrist, which now looked deformed. One of the best ways to discover dramatic New Zealand is on a cruise. The country's remote coastlines and deep fjords are often best seen from the deck of a boat.
If you’re cruising trans-Tasman from Australia or starting a cruise after arriving in New Zealand, you should consider protecting your trip with travel insurance.
Many people are unaware that even when departing Australia, most medical expenses onboard cruises will not be covered by Medicare – so consider your cruise ship effectively a country of its own.
If you are cruising for two or more nights and buying a Cover-More policy to protect your trip, you will need to answer “Yes” to travelling on a cruise to have Cruise Cover applied to your policy for an additional premium. (This is not required for river cruises.) If you don’t, you will not be protected for any cancellation costs if you need to cancel your cruise or for the duration of your cruise.
Our Cruise Cover doesn’t only help protect you from unexpected and costly onboard medical costs and emergency evacuations – it includes cover for sea sickness, cabin confinement, and more.
For more information on covering your cruise in New Zealand with Cover-More, visit our Cruise Cover and Cruise Cover FAQs pages, or call us on 1300 72 88 22 to speak to a member of our team.
True travel stories: don’t rock the boat – or it might cost big
Flying across your cabin isn’t exactly the idyllic experience one expects when heading off on an exotic cruise, right? Well, one unfortunate traveller experienced this situation, which left them with more than $10,000 worth of medical expenses. When stormy seas and a freak wave hit this traveller’s cruise ship in the middle of the night, they were propelled backwards, hitting their neck and head at a high velocity. After a consultation with the onboard doctor who assessed their condition, our Cover-More team arranged for the traveller to be airlifted from the ship to a hospital on New Zealand’s South Island where a fractured neck was diagnosed. Once hospital treatment concluded and the patient was stable, our team arranged flights back to Australia. Thankfully, having Cruise Cover on their insurance policy, the expenses involved with travel cancellations and emergency evacuation were one thing this injured traveller didn’t have to worry about.
How can Cover-More travel insurance assist me in an emergency?

What better way to see the vibrant, picture-perfect landscape of New Zealand than behind the wheel of a car or van? Heading off on a road trip is one of the more popular ways of exploring New Zealand, and with our International Comprehensive+ and Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plans, you’ll have up to $10,000 or $5,000 of rental vehicle insurance excess cover respectively.
If you choose our International Comprehensive+ Plan, we also provide rental vehicle comprehensive cover, which has a $10,000 benefit for the rental vehicle insurance excess and provides cover for misfuelling, lockout, cancellation of rental agreement fees, and more.

4 helpful tips for Australians driving in New Zealand:
- Make sure your driver licence is valid in Australia as well as New Zealand before you leave
- Snow and icy roads are a hazard; make sure you check the weather conditions and drive accordingly – take it slow.
- We know you want to explore all the beauty New Zealand has to offer, but it’s important to stop and take breaks when heading off on a lengthy road trip.
- Physical access to New Zealand’s ski resorts can be a difficult task because of the narrow and windy roads, so take extra caution when driving. Alternatively, most resorts offer a shuttle bus for those wanting a stress-free ride.
True travel stories: stray stones create more than just headaches
One of our Australian customers was grateful for their rental car vehicle excess cover when a flying stone from a passing truck smashed into the windscreen of their vehicle while travelling along a New Zealand road. The next day, a crack began to appear and grow, so the badly damaged windscreen had to be replaced. Fortunately for the customer, their Cover-More Travel Insurance policy saved them over $1,300 in excess costs.

After more than a year, Australia’s borders have opened for a travel bubble with New Zealand. And some travel insurers offer limited cover if your travel plans get interrupted by COVID-19.
But these international travel insurance policies only cover you for travel to New Zealand while a government travel ban still prevents you from travelling anywhere else without an exemption.
On this page:
Do you need travel insurance for New Zealand?
Will travel insurance provide cover for covid-19 in new zealand, will travel insurance cover skiing in new zealand, checklist for your new zealand holiday.
Travel insurance is essential for Australians travelling to New Zealand. Buy your insurance at the same time as you book your trip, that way you'll be covered if you have to cancel for some reason before you go.
Medical costs in New Zealand
New Zealand and Australia have a reciprocal healthcare agreement, meaning that Australian travellers can access New Zealand's public health service in an emergency, and vice versa.
You'll still have to pay some fees for treatment and medication and it's important to remember the agreement isn't a replacement for travel insurance.
Remember to take your Medicare card with you
For example, reciprocal health care does not cover you for free or subsidised care by a GP or ambulance, and if you get seriously ill, medical repatriation is very expensive and only covered by travel insurance.
Remember to take your Medicare card with you – you'll need it, along with your passport, to prove that you're eligible.
Accident cover in New Zealand
In New Zealand, accident victims cannot sue a third party for compensation. Instead, the Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) covers the cost of medical care within New Zealand.
This means it's essential that visitors to New Zealand are covered by travel insurance for repatriation, loss of income and disruptions to travel plans as you won't be compensated for those even if the other person was 100% at fault.
Note: Because of the ACC fund, CTP car insurance is not compulsory in New Zealand, as it is in Australia. However, it's still recommended and travel insurance can reduce the excess on the insurance your car hire company offers you.
Earthquake cover in New Zealand
New Zealand sometimes experiences severe seismic activity. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake claimed 185 lives and levelled much of the city centre.
Safety campaigns in New Zealand advise you to 'drop, cover and hold' – drop to the ground, take cover and hold on – in the event of an earthquake. See getready.govt.nz for more specific advice.
And read your travel insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) to see if you're covered for medical and cancellation for natural disasters
Some travel insurers, for example, Qantas (NIB), Virgin (Cover-More) or Medibank (Zurich), now offer travel insurance policies with limited cover against COVID-19. But they don't cover you if there's a general government travel ban, quarantine or border closure.
They normally provide cover for medical expenses should you contract COVID-19 and may cover travel delays or cancellations if you, your travelling partner, or a close relative contract COVID-19 before or during your travel.
You may also be covered if your accommodation, such as a ski resort, closes because of a COVID-19 outbreak or you have to go into quarantine because you were a close contact of someone who contracted COVID-19.
There are also other exclusions, especially for cruises and pre-existing conditions, so you need to read the insurer's PDS carefully to check what you're covered for.
Things can change quickly, flights can get cancelled and places can go into lockdown if an outbreak happens. You need to be prepared for your travel plans to be interrupted at short notice.
As travel insurance won't protect you from government border closures or general lockdowns, the key is to book with providers that allow flexibility should things change.
- Check the rules for travelling to New Zealand .
- Consider going to just one or a few places at a time rather than travelling around.
- Read the terms and conditions before you book.
- Book flexible tickets for flights. Read more about COVID-19 refunds from airlines .
- Make sure your hotel booking can be cancelled or changed.
- If you book through a travel agent or booking site, make sure they don't charge an extra cancellation fee. Read more about travel agent cancellations for COVID-19 .
- Consider booking at the last minute so you're up to date with the latest travel restrictions.
- Pay by credit card, as this allows you to pursue a chargeback if something goes wrong.
- Keep on top of the latest travel advice for New Zealand .
Many insurers will cover you for standard skiing and snowboarding, but some offer it as an optional extra and some have special conditions.
Before getting insurance for a ski holiday, make sure it will cover you for your specific skiing or snowboarding destination, as well as for the activities you intend to do.
For example, off-piste (backcountry) skiing or snowboarding is often not covered, and when it is covered, it's usually only if you're still within the resort boundaries or skiing with a guide.
The same goes for riding on a snowmobile, which tends to be an optional cover – check directly with insurers as some may only cover riding a snowmobile if you're using it as a mode of transport rather than recreationally.
- If you're planning on skiing, bungee jumping or doing anything else potentially bone-breaking, make sure your insurance covers it. You'll often need to purchase extra cover.
- Check if your passport is still valid, and if not, renew your passport online .
- Take your Medicare card with you.
- Keep a printout of your travel insurance details with you at all times while on your trip. It's also a good idea to share your insurance details with family or friends before you leave.
